hi friend, you still have the potential to be sued here in the US, even if you’re not using images. That’s a big part of why authors likes Anna Todd, scrubbed After (with all references to Harry’s name) from the internet when she started charging for it and before any publication would take an interest. (Before anyone comes for me, I’m sure the original has been saved by some third part somewhere. This is the internet after all. But the point remains if she were to be sued, she is able to claim that she did her due diligence by removing any and all content with any reference to Harry Styles from the internet BEFORE she received any payment.) The US is currently starting to crack down on copyright and intellectual property infringement. In large part due to the fact that so many people have received huge payouts over the last ten years. Unfortunately they’re not choosing to go after the ones that have actually gotten rich from the issue. And while the drivers might not care. Their management most certainly will. If you’re choosing to charge for your fiction it might be best to at the very least change names so you might have some form of deniability.

I'm not trying to go against your word, but rather wondering about the topic myself because it seems to me it's a huge gray area, so feel free to reach me on my private messages or on anon again if you want. But speaking about Anna Todd, technically she could still be sued even after scrubbing Harry's name from the story because there was still proof on the internet that it was a story about him, if we're talking about defamation it doesn't need to involve the monetization aspect, it's still defamation without it. This would mean that ANY RPF fanfiction is illegal and could be sued (which is not necessarly the case because theres the whole fair use thing).

We're talking about huge payouts, but I'm getting less than fifty dollars a month with Patreon lol would their team really come for me (a poor grad student) on behalf of a billionaire for getting less than fifty dollars a month to help pay school and medical bills? this would need a huge pr work too to make them seem good after doing something so crazy like this.

Talking about defamation, let's say I change names, but this Tumblr would still be up and everything else would easily show that it's about pilot X, this could still be considered illegal because you can tell who it is about. The reason why nobody comes for rpf is because 1) the money people are talking about is just a few bucks most of the time, and 2) it's exactly this real people's FICTION, there's not much to talk about defamation of a worldwide artist when the content you're sharing is for a nich of less than one hundred people, it's not reasonable. I haven't found a past decision about something similar in the US court, if there is, please send it in, but other than that it's a huge speculation thing in my head, which only a judge could clarify.

Patreon and monetizing fanfiction is quite common in fandoms like Chris Evans', for example, and I haven't seen anything legal come from it yet. again because it's unreasonable for those artists to go after their own fans for taking less than a hundred dollars in content that clearly sets a fictional character that just happens to look and have the same name as them because more often than not it's set in an alternative universe.

and aiya advice for fic writers huh. i dont know if my advice is worth much if anything at all but from the top of my head here are some things ive picked up over the years that will hopefully serve someone somewhere

presentation actually matters!!!! a properly formatted fic is not only delicious to read but also helps with keeping you in the story, i know this because i am a bad formatter (so sorry) and whenever i go through my fics and see a mistake i'm immediately taken out of it! just make sure it's easy to read and you have formatted it to the best of your abilities

brevity is the soul of wit. unfortunately. this is by no means i'm advocating for only short sentences (we all love tangents!) but i think it is good to vary on sentence length and save your longer lines for things that are important to note down! this image has been going around for years now but i still think its one of the most helpful pieces of writing advice ive ever seen

side characters are your best friends!!!!! i think as fanfic writers sometimes we want to get to the point and focus only on our mains, but it does add a lot of flavor and texture when you have small storylines happening along with your main plot, especially if you're doing an in-depth character study. life exists even when we're not seeing it!!!! give your side characters interesting stories and relationships!!!!

writing is about FUN and your questions regarding your storyline should never be "what is the most logical thing that could happen now?" but "what is the most interesting thing that could happen now?". this is a sin aftg fans commit the most when talking about aftg but i am here to tell you that no plot is too ambitious. nothing is so out there that you can't write about it! no concept is too wacky! interesting should come first; you worry about the logic in later edits. most readers are more willing to forgive an interesting plot with technical problems than they are willing to forgive a boring story that is perfect writing-wise

okay let me tell you guys about my hajime headcanons! (i say ‘you guys’ as if anyone actually sees these posts LMAO)

but anyway, hajime.

after the simulation hajime wasn’t just magically himself. sure, somewhere in there hajime existed, but he couldn’t pull himself to the surface for months. we’re led to believe that hajime and izuru now share a body, right? but after having his emotions removed and his body enhanced he couldn’t force himself to feel for the longest time.

how do i put this.. hm… some people like to think that hajime now suffers from DID or that izuru is just gone but i think they physically share a body. hajime is more in control but izuru still exists in the mind. (izuru is originally more in control but as time progressed hajime gained more authority) so not exactly like DID more like two people in one. two for one sale, that’s a hell of an offer! (sorry bad joke) i feel like his body would be more like a vessel then a person, y’know? anyway when they wake up from the simulation his hair is still long, he’s wearing the suit, all that jazz. the others are pretty terrified at first, hajime isn’t like he was in the neo program at all. he’s silent, barely talks. his eyes are a dark red, his glare is deadly. even the future foundation is hesitant. but he shows no hostility, despite his horde glare he keeps calm. while izuru shows no signs of danger or violence, hajime does. mostly out of fear. i mean how would you feel if you were trapped inside a body, unable to surface, to feel or express anything. it’s difficult for anyone to decipher who is in control for the first few months, they both show no expression. izuru doesn’t feel like it and hajime physically can’t. the only indication they have that hajime is still there is if the body either harms itself or others.

occasionally, hajime would have these freak outs. he’d harm himself in many ways in order to feel something. izuru would put no work into stopping him even though future foundation begged. he said he found no use for it, that the others actions were meaningless. once hajime had walked out to the Hotel Restaurant where they usually meet in the mornings. the others say he looked deadly pale, his eyes opened wide, blankly staring forward. it was frightening. saying nothing, he sat down at the table, motionless. not wanting to interact too much with the man, they served him breakfast while the others chatted mindlessly, hoping to free up the tension in the air. that was until hajime picked up a knife and slammed it straight through into his hand, still staring at nothing, no indication of pain on his face. the others went silent in shock for a few moments before the room erupted in screaming. mikan was still in her pod, they had been relying on izurus nurse abilities but with him out of commission they were lost with what to do.

another time, he had collapsed on the walkway due to starvation. other times due to blood loss. in conclusion, hajime was incredibly unstable.

it took months for him to express properly. he had to completely relearn emotions and feelings. he lacked empathy and proper etiquette. they were worried he would never recover..

eventually that one eye turned green again and it felt like he could finally breathe. he had been watching everything from the back, as if he watching a movie of his own life play on the big screen. but now he was there. he was actually there, it wasn’t just izuru. after that, the outbursts started to slowly stop. he started working with the future foundation directly instead of giving instruction from the sidelines. people started to wake up. first mahiru, then hiyoko, then gundham, and so on..

the ones who were able were sent out to the fight monokumas in towa city. hajime, having a completely reconstructed body was obviously sent out first. actually let’s talk about that!

the izuru kamukura project wasn’t just a simple procedure. this was months of torture. his brain was picked apart and put back together. so we’re his legs, his arms, his feet, his hands.. all were reconstructed to be better then a regular humans abilities. he was stronger, faster, trained in hand to hand combat, his reflexes were enhanced. they tried everything. (a part of me wants to say he had like psychic abilities but i feel like that would be silly. they’re talented, not magical. although that would be super cool) they didn’t care about hajime hinata, they wanted to create something inhuman. a creature able to showcase true hope. their experiments were risky, inhumane. they hadn’t killed his pain tolerance until later in the procedures, he was forced to withstand it all. he desperately hung onto his hope of obtaining a talent, it was the only thing keeping him sane. how they didn’t end up kill him is a miracle. ah, but i suppose in a way they did. hajime was erased. they had gotten rid of any trace of what hajime hinata is, of who he was. it’s not like anyone knew him, and if they did they wouldn’t care. he was a reserve course student after all. many had died or gone missing, all was covered up. he didn’t have a talent, no friends, no job, and his parents were “taken care of” by the school. it was almost like hajime hinata hadn’t existed at all.

ahaha okay, i could rant more but this is getting too long. soo ima stop it here! i love hajimes character sm, i feel like everyone ignores his trauma and story. ESPECIALLY in fanfics omg. like i get it, nagito is fucked up BUT LIKE SO IS HAJIME??? if anything, they’re both fucking insane at this point. like there’s so much to work withhh! omg okay pause i might get hate for this but does anyone know zakikos work?? you probably know him from that limbless hajime meme thing that went around for a while. i hate to say it but his stories are SO FUCKING GOOD. Hey guys! So since the Wingfeather Saga show episodes are going again and I’m gonna be super hyped about it for a while I thought maybe I’d try doing some short story fanfic requests if anyone has them. I can’t promise I’ll get them done (my brain is a fickle thing and sometimes flat out refuses to do a story, sometimes for no reason) but I thought I’d give it a shot. Stories would be posted here or on Ao3 or both, depending on the length probably. Below I’ll outline what I will and won’t write but also note that requests involving the kiddos and/or Artham/Peet are more likely to get written than anything else.

What I will write:

Gen stories (platonic or family relationships)

Canon ships (like Nia and Esben, Janner and Sara, etc)

Filler stories that take place before, after or during the series

Stories that connect with the TV show specifically (since it’s a little different than the books) like the one I did with Sara and Peet for episode 2

Stuff for my crossovers (Wingfeather Madrigal Falls, Anniera Falls)

Other crossovers IF they’re something I can keep short and IF I’ve seen/read the thing you want me to cross the WFS over with

What I will NOT write:

Smut or anything of that nature

Non-canon ships

Crossovers with shows/books I haven’t read or watched

Long fics (unless they spiral out of control, but I’m not going to do it intentionally)

Character x reader fics, Idk how to do those

And I reserve the right to refuse any request with zero explanation (but I’ll probably give you an explanation and it’s probably just because my brain refuses to do it)

really love it when you see "you have already left kudos here. :)" and people will instantly go to the comments to send more hearts, more love to the author and the story. whether it's a long paragraph, a keyboard smash or a simple "you have already left kudos here, well I need to give more!!" comments, it makes me feel so, so warm!

some might feel like cringing or that it's "embarrassing" to leave long comments, but I smile when I read those because they are genuine and sincere. because huh? I really impacted your life? even if it's just for a few minutes, I made them feel. for just a moment, they were connected to the story. they were connected to me.

and it's amazing that there are stories that stays with us for years. I find myself referencing something from a fic and thinking, "huh, I should reread that." because i miss those times. staying up late when you have a busy schedule the following day, reading a simple one-shot, the next chapter, hitting kudos again and again in the middle of commute, stopping myself from cooing out loud or letting out a giggle, just because of the simple happiness of reading. the excitement of what's to come, on how they'll continue and finish it.

and I'm really grateful to authors that write these from something that is already loved. they'd be like, "haha, but what if...?" then put their time and effort and write something beautiful.

whether you need a good laugh or to just let out and cry, an epic adventure that is so different from the original story, you'll be wondering, "what the fuck is going on with this author's brain, this is amazing!"

they'd be moving on with their lives, going forward and maybe writing more, and I hope they know that they made someone smile. that they inspired someone to write.

especially those that write long, multi-chapter fics, I'll be bowing my head and kneeling in front of them. just the thought of the amount of research they put into it, I hope they know that it's well loved.

I'm a firm believer that you should write for yourself, to make something that you are proud of. but to know that it's liked, wow, I hope a simple thank you is enough, because somehow, the words aren't formulating right now.

just thankful to ao3 for existing. thankful to fanfiction sites for existing. thankful to wonderful authors for writing and sharing their stories. thankful to readers that leave a simple like, a simple heart, a simple comment, their token of appreciation that is gleefully and greatfully received.

Idk if this is controversial or not, but writing smut about underage characters isn't an issue for a few reasons: most of these writers are young, usually the same age hence their attraction, so yeah they might get inspired and want to write a romantic scene or two.

(and when I say underage I mean 16-17 when kids start experimenting sexually)

An issue only presents when one, the writer is an adult, and two, when these adults consume that media willingly.

The issue isn't the fact that a teen wrote sexual content about another fictional teen they like, the issue is those adults having desires for those who are underage and *typically* significantly younger.

Like kids read and enjoy to write and of course they would be more interested in their own age group, so do yourself a favor by being normal and sticking to your age group as well.

But basically my point is don't hate the fact it exists, hate the fact those adults contribute to it and consume it.
