Geiko Sekka 1900 by Blue Ruin 1

A lithograph based on a well-known carte-de-visite photograph of Morgan O-Yuki, when she was a geiko (geisha) known as Sekka (Fragrant Snow). Referred to as Kokyū-no-Sekka, due to her sublime performances on the the kokyū, a traditional stringed instrument palyed with a bow. She became famous when she married George Dennison Morgan, a nephew of the fabulously wealthy American industrialist, John Pierpont Morgan. They are said to have met when George Morgan saw Sekka performing in the 1902 Miyako Odori (Cherry Dance).

1. Name/nickname: Lotus

2. Gender: Genderfae, very lesbian. (I’m usually like...a woman with some nonbinaryness in there, and no matter what my gender is at any given time, it’s influenced by my queerness and my lesbianism. And probably my neurodivergence too.)

3. Star sign: Taurus sun, Scorpio moon, Libra rising

4. Height: a little over 5′1. I haven’t really grown much since like 8th grade :/

5: Current time: 1:06 am . (Holy shit I’m actually finishing this at like 2am; I can’t believe how much time flies. :O I wouldn’t’ve thought it would’ve taken me this long to do these questions xD )

6: Birthday: It was really recent! I had a pretty decent time considering the circumstances. ^_^ (It was my second quarantine birthday :/ )

7. Favorite bands: uhhhh I should probably have a more prepared answer for this but Linkin Park has been one since I was a kid, and off the top of my head I like a lot of Pink Floyd songs. Also Evanescence is cool. And A Tribe Called Red. Also does Secret Garden count as a band? I’m guessing not really but I’ll include it here. And does Chloe x Halle count as a band? If so I would also say they’re probably a fave of mine (even though I definitely need to listen to more of their stuff). And maybe G-Idle (though I’m only really into one of their songs). Oh, and Afro Celts.

8. Favorite solo artists: Yuki Kajiura (if she counts), same with Joe Hisaishi. Definitely SJ Tucker, Lil Nas X, Loreena Mckennit, maybe Rhianna (also a childhood fav), maybe Megan Thee Stallion, maybe Kevin Kern and Stive Morgan (though they’re instrumentalists). There are also lots of artists for whom I really like like one song of theirs and I wanna get more into them overall (like Lala Hsu, FKA Twigs [though for her it’s more than just one], Vienna Teng, and probably a bunch of others that I’m blanking out on rn). I’m also probably blanking out on a lot of bands and solo artists in general who I like.

9. Song stuck in my head: I’m listening to “Holy Terrain” by FKA Twigs rn but before I started listening to music, it was probably a mix of this choral song I’m listening to for school and a song I’m working on composing that’s loosely inspired by it.

10. Last movie I watched: hmmm, why am I having trouble remembering? It might be Castle in the Sky which I watched a while ago with my fiancee. Or it might be Pixar’s “Soul”. I can’t remember which one I saw first

11. Last show I watched: if it counts, then Adventuring Party (which is the Dimension 20 talk-back show)

13. When did I create this blog? It was almost a decade ago. I’m really glad this blog is still here and I can still look through it (like, go to a random page on my “beautiful” tag). In a sense my tumblr is kind of a mess but I also view it as kind of an archive of my life and of treasures I’ve found. Obviously a lot has changed since I first created the blog, but I’m glad it’s still here. And I’m super grateful to any mutuals who I’ve been connected with for a large portion of that time <3

13. What I post: I mean, y’all have seen a decent amount of it, but lots of random shit I like or think is pretty or interesting. Lots of nature and art, lots of leftist politics, lots of LGBTQ stuff, a decent amount of fandom stuff (like Dimension 20, star trek, steven universe, hilda, whatever else is on my mind), and some humor and spirituality sprinkled in ^_^ . Oh and I sometimes get horny on main and I should probably make another blog for that but I’ve been too lazy to. I’ll let y’all know if that happens :)

14. Last thing I googled: Streetlight Manifesto (a band a friend was recommending)

15: Other blogs: @sapphohaven (which I didn’t create but I’ve been running it for a while), @stimmylotus (my stim blog)

16. Do I get asks? Not a lot, but I sometimes find large amounts of asks to be overwhelming so I don’t really mind. (I’m currently drafting a long response to an ask I got over a month ago, if that gives you an idea.) Lighthearted ones are always welcome though, and asks letting me know if I accidentally reblogged a terf or something.

17. Why I chose my url? I actually kinda remember this xD . I had tried just “lotus” (which I knew was probably already taken but I figured it was worth trying), then “moonlotus” (which was also taken), then “earthmoonlotus”. All of those words were (and are) spiritually resonant to me and it just kinda works I guess.

18. Following: 5000 (shit, I need to go through again and unfollow inactive blogs)

19. Followers: 3,750 (though a lot of them are probably inactive. I reached 3,000 sometime around 5 years ago and it’s only really crawled since then.)

20. Average hours of sleep: I have no idea but probably around 9 or so

21. Lucky number: idk. I sometimes like to breathe and center myself when I see 11:11 on the clock. And when my fiancee and I are together we like to kiss when that happens ^_^ . 333 can be nice too

22. Instruments: I’m actually a proficient musician. I play piano, violin, and flute, and I compose. I can also transcribe and arrange stuff if anyone wants to hire me for that

23. What I am wearing: denim shorts I just threw on earlier today so I wouldn’t be in my underwear when I go out in the hall to use the bathroom, and a pretty flowery shirt with a denim collar

24. Dream trip: oooo this is kinda tough because there are so many places I would love to travel to. I guess I’ll say a long, like, month-long or 3-month long trip around Europe (I’d definitely wanna see Stonehenge and some other ancient Pagan sites, I’d definitely wanna go to Berlin and some other parts of Germany, and I’d definitely wanna go to Paris and maybe some other parts of France. I also might be interested in Ireland and possibly some other places)

25. Favorite food: this is a hard one because there are so many to choose from. Maybe a good chocolatey and fruity cheesecake-based dessert. And for savory stuff, maybe like...a really good stir-fry with seitan or tofu and broccoli on white vermincelli rice noodles.

26. Nationality: born and raised in the US, family is German-American by background on both sides

27. Favorite song: If I had to pick one it would probably be Decretum by Yuki Kajiura.

28. Last book I read: aaaaa I need to read more. I started “Emergent Strategy” by Adrienne Marie Brown and I really wanna finish it but haven’t gotten around to it. The last book I finished was probably “Record of a Spaceborn Few” by Becky Chambers.

29: Top 3 fictional universes: holy shit this is such a good question. Definitely the Star Trek universe. As for the other two...the universe of Niel Shusterman’s “Everlost” has always stuck with me for some reason even though I read the book in middle school and idk if I’ve even re-read it. It would be interesting to re-read as an adult, especially considering how much of the book I actually remember for how long ago it was that I read it. As for a third....gotta say Becky Chambers’ “Wayfarers” universe. Though the universe of Ursula K. le Guin’s “The Dispossessed” is also really up there.

30. favorite color: I guess maybe pink if I had to pick one (especially fuscia). I’m also into like...the bright green of summer grass.

La Final de la Copa Mundial Femenina 2015: Nada que envidiarle a los equipos masculinos.

Llego a su fin quizás el mejor torneo que hemos tenido en el transcurso del año, la Copa Mundial Femenina 2015, y es lamentable que en Latinoamérica no le brindemos la atención que se merece (Opacada por torneos como la Copa Ámerica y el Mundial Sub-20). En gran parte de Europa, Asia y Australia es un evento magistral tal y como lo sería uno de tipo masculino.

Las estadounidenses después de una participación pulcra y envidiable se alzaron con la Copa del Mundo (Muy merecida por cierto) después de 16 años desde la última vez que pudieron acariciarla de la mano de figuras tan emblemáticas como Mia Ham y Kristine Lilly, leyendas del deporte.

Virtuosas como Megan Rapinoe, Tobin Heath, Megan Klingenberg, Sydney Leroux, Hope Solo, Ali Krieger, Alex Morgan, la ya legendaria Abby Wambach y la figura del torneo Carli Lloyd nos dejaron con la boca abierta en el transcurso de todos los 7 partidos hasta el arrollante marcador final de 5-2 contra las vigentes campeonas hasta ese momento, las japonesas.

Esto era prácticamente una revancha luego de que en la final de la copa de 2011, fueron las niponas las que se alzaron con el preciado trofeo en una tumultuosa ronda de penales por encima de las estadounidenses. Esta vez “las gringas” venían preparadas para finiquitar todo desde el principio del encuentro, y para muestra el triplete de la majestuosa Carli Lloyd en tan solo los primeros 16 minutos del partido (El "hat trick" más rápido que se haya observado en la historia del Mundial, en categorías de hombres y de mujeres). Todo lo demás fue un despliegue de una táctica efectiva y glamorosa por parte de las ganadoras. Los goles de Holiday y Heath llegaron solo para adornar más el marcador, mientras que Johnston (USA) en un movimiento de infortunio metía un sexto gol pero en portería contraria. El gol nipon llegó del pie de Yuki Omigi.

Ahora, ¿qué significa esto para el deporte más hermoso del mundo?, al menos en EEUU un lugar donde no era tan visto o aceptado como otros, esta final se convirtió en el evento deportivo de mujeres u hombre más visto en la historia en un país donde se supone no se veía fútbol.

Las crecientes ligas, MLS (Liga Masculina) y la NWSL (Liga Femenina) han contribuido al creciente apoyo por este deporte, una disciplina que al menos en USA es más exitosa la selección femenina del mismo. Pero por otra parte, los varones siguen ganando 10 veces más que ellas. Ahora, es cierto que la liga masculina llena más estadios y por ende gestiona más boletería; sin embargo la disparidad económica es abismal. Mientras los chicos reciben millones, las chicas deben conformarse con unos pocos miles, inaudito. Este logro ha abierto el debate precisamente en este tema, los equipos femeninos no exigen la equidad de salarios, porque la demanda francamente no está a la par todavía, pero un salario más justo debe estar en las conversaciones de la FIFA y de la NWSL. No solo para ellas, sino para todas las selecciones femeninas alrededor del globo.

¿Y en Latinoamérica? Como fieles seguidores del sistema estadounidense espero que esto sea una de esas cosas que tomamos como ejemplo para mejorar. Nuestras chicas, en especial las colombianas, ticas y mexicanas que se lucieron en la Copa, merecen una mejor plataforma en este deporte, mayor apoyo de parte de las instituciones y sobre todo de la fanaticada. Sé que es inevitable ser opacadas por un evento como la Copa América, con Messi y compañía; cuyo mercadeo patriarcal es mucho mayor vendiendo más camisetas y entradas; pero por lo que pude ver en este torneo, hay selecciones femeninas que dejan regados a varios equipos masculinas...yassss.

Mientras tanto, allá en EEUU le han dado la bienvenida a sus guerreras como se lo merecen, desfiles en L.A., New York, llaves de la ciudad de la última; además de estar inmersas en una fuerte gira de la victoria en medios y canchas. Ellas creyeron (#SheBelieves), el pueblo creyó (#OneTeamOneNation) y al final el trabajo rindió frutos. Cuidado las demás porque se acerca Rio 2016 y las gringas vienen con todo por el oro. ¡Felicidades a las chicas, son un ejemplo para todos!

Ey, we usually end up like a heap of kittens after a party, on or next to a sofa. Nothing ever happens, like we were siblings. It's depressing, if you think about it.

Anyway, we were having a good time at Max's place and afterwards the servants shoved us all under a blanket to get sorted out by our parents when they'd come pick us up the next day. Except for Carlos and Ulrike, since they are technically adults already.

R: When’s the last time they had a birthday party?

At my birthday. D'oh.

We went to the Bluffs the evening before, hanging out, drinking and daring each other to jump into the pool and strike midnight we launched fireworks.

A: Who are their exes? Do they still keep in touch?

I had sort of a thing going with Mia McNally when we were fourteen. More precisely, we were each others emergency Yule Ball date, but then she snogged Isi there. And now we're all back to being just good chums.

N: Are they clumsy and/or prone to accidents?

I'm neither clumsy...

D: What time does their day usual start?

When school's over. Before, I'm just sort of there. (considers) After school I'm still only sort of there. But more active.

O: How much have they changed in the past five years?

A lot! See, we used to get picked on a lot. Basically we were a bunch of losers. I had space-themed b-day parties and was into stuff like Star Trek. How lame is that? Now we're still losers, but we punch Santa Claus in the face and run away with his beard. People change to the other side of the sidewalk when they see us. Also I'm connected now. Max's dad taught me a lot. We're all going to work for him, regardless of how well we finish school.

I never had one. I... I admit I fled from the mansion shortly before my first birthday because I was afraid the others might get ideas. I mean, there were tons of other reasons why I left. But this one definitely figured in.

Mia and it's difficult. We think we are still in love, but we also think we paired up too early. There are so many other fish in the ocean... So we allowed each other to check out what this world has to offer and see if we will perhaps miss each other. Crazy, huh? So planned and rational!

Anyway, it's the reason I moved out of the mansion to an old fishing hut of Jacques'. The others are over often. Mia, too.

I shouldn't be clumsy at all, but sometimes I fail QTEs. Between you and me, that's a level of "lifelike programming" I could live without!

(Note: This Brandon is very focused on the digital world, up to paying less attention to his surroundings than he should and could. That's why the accidents and failures.)

D: What time does their day usual start?

I'm active all around the clock, with short breathers every four to five hours. But if you want to know how I decide when to say "yesterday" instead of "earlier today", well, for me the day starts with dawn, not at an artificial midnight. When nature comes alive, first the early birds and then the sun rises over the Rhine... that never gets old.

O: How much have they changed in the past five years?

Let me see... I got assembled, activated, did what I was told to do, deviated... Meh. I can't really say if I have changed or if I'm just pronouncing what always has been there more now. I know for example that I enjoy everything business related. But there's days when accounting is just a task to finish before I can go party and then there's days when I'd like nothing better than going from house to house in person until every last RK900 is sold. It ebbs and flows, like, constantly. That crazy deviant brain of mine is STILL doing it's own thing half of the time.

‘All the Streets Are Silent’ Film Review

As far as titles go, you can’t implicate Jeremy Elkin’s “All the Streets Are Silent: The Convergence of Hip-Hop and Skateboarding (1987-1997)” of incorrect marketing. Tracing the 2 youth cultures as they dance around one another and lastly converge on the streets of New York City throughout the years, the director collects an impressive quantity of classic video, and discovers no lack of deep veins to tap. And yet, in spite of its doctoral dissertation-style title, “All the Streets Are Silent” does not have a thesis: less a sociological research study of the rapper-skater merging than an event of a really particular kind of person in a really particular piece of area and time. In this case, the sort of young adult who felt most in your home wandering the streets of Dinkins-period Manhattan with just a board and a boombox for business.
