If I Have to Be Haunted review
Tumblr media
5/5 stars Recommended if you like: portal fantasy, ghost stories, family expectations, rivals to lovers
I was definitely looking forward to reading this book when it arrived, but I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. It's a nice, light read if you're in the mood for a medium-stakes spooky adventure. I really liked that we got to know more about ghost talking as well as the supernatural world in this book as a whole. I'm definitely intrigued about the possibility of a sequel!
It was interesting to see how Cara dealt with her ghost speaking powers. Her family knows about them, but no one else is allowed to know, which means she has to deal with seeing ghosts around her town and not reacting to them. I think Sun did a good job showing how Cara was adept at ignoring ghosts while also still showing the strain it put on Cara and her non-familial (and, frankly, familial) relationships. I also really loved the idea of her getting to have a relationship with her grandmother because she can visit as a ghost.
There's definitely a lot going on in this book between Cara's ghost talking, her mother's dislike of it, and Zach being killed and turned into a ghost, without adding in the additional background hints of a grander plot with the chaos snake (I cannot remember it's actual name, lol) and Cara's and Zach's grandmothers' pasts. I think it all worked though since everything feeds back into the main plot and, to me, it felt pretty obvious how everything connected.
As mentioned, I like how Cara's ghost talking is portrayed and how we get to see both the nicer and less nice sides of it. Cara definitely feels like a teenager and, unusually, I actually liked that. There were a couple moments when it felt over the top, but by and large I liked the way she was portrayed when talking with her friends and mom. Cara ends up having to deal with a lot of heavy stuff pretty quickly in this book, what with finding a classmate dead and then having to break a curse to resurrect him and what not. I think she handles everything pretty well, all things considered, and she really comes into herself over the course of the book, despite some setbacks.
Zach was definitely annoying when he was introduced, but considering the obvious rivals-to-lovers setup, I didn't immediately dislike him. As predicted, Zach ends up being both sweeter and less obnoxious of a person once in private and dealing with the supernatural adventure. He's actually pretty funny and I enjoyed some of his comebacks when he and Cara argued. I also think his protective streak is obvious and it's clear he cares for other people. I also liked the glimpses we got into his backstory and getting to know a little bit about his family dynamics since we know so much about Cara's.
The last really 'main' character is Brittanie. I wasn't really a fan of her at first and honestly I found her to be a bit obnoxious. However, she definitely grew on me and by the end I liked her and am hoping to see more of her in future books. Like Cara, she can see ghosts, but unlike Cara, she didn't come about that gift naturally. She ends up coming along on their adventure because of her own family supernatural issues and a desire to prove herself to the rest of her family, who are ghost hunters. I'm actually kind of hoping that book 2 focuses on Brittanie and her family because I desperately want to know more about them!
I absolutely love the little friend group that Cara creates from her adventure. It was nice to see her and Zach getting along better (and of course the requisite romantic tension). I also ended up really liking Brittanie's character more and am hoping she shows up for more adventures in book 2. The three of them together are hilarious.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and think it's a nice low key ghost story/paranormal adventure. I liked the characters and the magic of the world and am looking forward to the sequel.

"Why are you so ready to risk your life for me?" "Beacuse—" Because she loved him. The realization came to her like light in a shadowed room, the shape of it revealing itself line by line, starlit and undeniable. Perhaps it had appeared a moment ago. Or perhaps it had been before her for some time, and her eyes had only just adjusted. Somehow, somewhere along the way, the strings between them had sunk into her skin, and she'd gotten attached.

FairyLoot Unboxing
Invisible Truths September 2023
The September theme is "Invisible Truths". The box looked really full at first glance, but it was mostly blanket.
The featured book is "If I Have to be Haunted" by Miranda Sun. When I first read the spoiler description the book sounded really interesting, but the Waterstones description sounds god awful. It sounds like it's a promising idea poorly executed. The dust jacket is really similar to the original cover, and there's a reversible cover that's quite similar looking but... worse. It has an artwork hardcase, which is a feature I normally love, but this one isn't particularly nice. The sprayed edges and pattern endpapers are gorgeous, though. They both have a leaf/butterfly design which matches the jacket.
The first item is a blanket, inspired by "A Darker Shade of Magic". I love a blanket! I have so, so many blankets, I don't know what to do with them all. But it's a nice blanket. It'll go away in my drawer full of other blankets I keep in case they're needed one day.
The next item is a set of travel bottles, based on "Fourth Wing". This isn't a particularly inspiring item to get in a book box, it's just like, a drugstore item with a logo stamped on. Honestly, I don't know why this idea even crossed their minds. Now, this item will work for me, personally - because I go to spend a weekend with Henry about four to six times a year, and always take my mouthwash in a little throw-away travel bottle. So, it'll save me about £3.20, I guess.
Next is an enamel pin. This is my favourite item in the box - it's inspired by "The Raven Cycle", and I love it!! It doesn't quite go with my jacket, but close enough that I'll make it work.
And next we have a book light. IMO, this is a really lazy, sloppy item. It's a really clever booklight, it fits over a page, and the light is distributed really evenly. But, firstly - if you're going to have a light that ridiculously bright, you'd do as well to just turn a light on. And secondly, this is just a mass market book light, with a quote printed on the grip as an afterthought.
The last item is a set of foiled bookmarks, based on "Red Rising". I don't really like card bookmarks, I prefer metal or wood. And I don't see the point in sets of bookmarks - you can't use them all at the same time! It would be far better to get a single bookmark of nicer quality.
This month's tarot cards are Addie and Luc from "The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue".
I can't say I'm at all impressed with this month's box - the items just don't feel that exclusive.

This is such a perfect spooky season read! A ghost speaker must save a ghost who just happens to be her biggest enemy at school. However, this is a romance, so I felt all the best enemies-to-lovers vibes while these two struck out in the liminal world.
This was absolutely delightful! I loved all the feels and the added cultural aspect of Cara's Chinese family. This is a true journey for the protagonist. She learns about herself and her gifts throughout this tale.
I really loved this!
Out September 26, 2023!
Thank you, Netgalley and Publisher, for this Arc!

monster prom is such a brilliant game. You think it’s a stupid little dating sim satire (and it is) but then you start having discussions of class conflict, responsible drug use, the fear of disappointing parents by being yourself, how family doesn’t start or end in blood, and just so much more.
And the Damian punches the fucking sun.

Astrology - Venus Edition 💕 (pt 1)
A recent discussion I had made me think about astrology "textbook" looking people. Like these people are the embodiment of their sign. Their image just fit their astrology sign perfectly, you know? This is Venus Edition 🌸
Taurus 💖
Miranda Kerr! If you're unfamiliar with her, just watch any of her interviews, especially about her fashion sense. She looks, walks, talks like a Taurean. She's elegant, calm & slow (in movement). Her love for luxury and self care is apparent. Taurus is also the most beautiful sign in my observation. Do i need to explain this former Victoria Secret bombshell further? 🤣

Now for the male part, this one is no brainer, Henry Cavill. His demeanor, his face, his persona, idk if men can be elegant but he definitely is. Proper and well mannered. In his interviews he's very poised and man, something about how Taurean carried themselves. Taking their own little time. Also he's the embodiment of man written by a woman, physically wise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's it! I have more people/celeb I could recommend but they're top of the list 🌸
