as I reread the Market of Monsters series I need to thank Rebecca Schaeffer again for giving us a set of main characters who openly discuss being on the aroace spectrum and have a QPR without it ever being seen as lesser than a romantic/sexual relationship, and having it be a core part of their relationship as characters without being used as a diversity play.

a prohibition era fantasy city where people turn into their real life nightmares. Since the nightmare phantom is free, people aren’t turning anymore, but that doesn’t mean the thousands of supernatural people and monsters stopped existing

Ness is once again just trying to survive day-to-day in the supervillain-esque city without ending up in the middle of a shootout, but once again finds herself pulled into the chaos of cults and evil mayors and criminal conspiracies

#cage of dreams #rebecca schaeffer #aroaessidhe 2023 reads #enjoyed this! #tho i will say I think plot wise it felt a lot….less? than book one. #like some big dramatic things happen but they felt on smaller scale and less significant than in book 1. less development overall. #not sure how much it added; other than wrapping up the story? #not necessarily a bad thing I just was like man I’m getting through this so fast #sometimes the ‘his dad abuses people and then makes movies romanticising abuse to make people think it’s okay!’ convo is a bit unnuanced... #but most importantly: DID NOT TURN INTO A ROMANCE I REPEAT THEY ARE STILL FRIENDS #there’s definitely moments when she notices he’s attractive or blushes and stuff #but the end only implies that they want to stay together (neutral) and has no overtly romantic implications #I will take that. thanks #(I'm sure people will ship it but like it's not canon) #no romance

I just finished reading City of Nightmares by Rebecca Schaeffer.

I AM NOT JOKING WHEN I SAY I WAS CRYING AND LAUGHING ST THE SAME TIME.

It was a rollercoaster of emotions on every page of the book and I found it to be physically impossible to pull my eyes away from the pages.

Amazing characters, unpredictable plot that left me baffled with every turn and plot twist. The character development was superb, and the description of the nightmares had me on the edge of my seat.

10/10 book, would force someone to read. 👍

Ok one more City of Nightmares/Market of Monsters thing and then I’m done for the day but I am so OBSESSED with the way friendships are portrayed in these books? Like absolutely feral. What do you mean healthy communication and devotion and helping each other grow, not necessarily into “good” people but into the version of ourselves we can best live with! What do you mean honest friendship requires us to examine our own shortcomings as well as others because refusing to see the bad parts of anyone can only be detrimental to them and us! What do you mean attachments based in trust and mutual affection and a lack of jealousy and room for us to change and continue to connect with others while still holding on to what we already have!!! Brb going to go sob into a pillow
