Back before Whole Foods got bought by amazon they used to be super generous in their cheese samples. We would drop by fairly frequently purely to eat their free cheese. I met so many wonderful cheeses that way and have subsequently forgotten most of them bc their names are too long. My favorite ever though was “smoked seaside cheddar cheese” from a brand I would always forget to check. What a simple and yet extremely satisfying cheese. Haven’t seen it since Whole Foods got bought out. Anyways I’m thinking abt this bc for lunch I’ve just bought a block of Sartori’s Merlot Bellavitano cheese to eat directly and I would never have known of this cheese if it weren’t for Whole Foods cheese samples. Fuck Amazon

OK you mentioned in your intro you have a cheese you know would go well with a sour cherry ball
so i feel obligated to ask you if there are any cheeses that you think would pair well with sour patch kids (specifically the blue ones if you have any ideas)
Mmmm, Goat Gouda or Merlot Bellavitano sound like they'd go good with it TBH. Kerrygold Reserve Aged Cheddar with some butter crackers may also taste good with the blue sour patchkid! I'll have to try it 👀

Food in California
Gott's Roadside is a Northern California restaurant group with seven locations in the San Francisco Bay Area. As an “idealized version of the American roadside stand” and diner concept, the family-owned company's niche is fast food made with boutique ingredients from local purveyors cooked to-order, including hamburgers and Ahi burgers, salads, French fries, and milkshakes, plus seasonal specials like the “Seoul” pork burger with kimchi and the B.L.T. with heirloom tomatoes. On July 25, 2017, Gott's started serving the vegan Impossible burger.
When the owners of a historic burger shack in St. Helena—Taylor's Refresher—decided to lease out their 50-year-old property, brothers Joel and Duncan Gott capitalized the opportunity to run their own restaurant. The restaurant became Taylor's Automatic Refresher when the first location re-opened in St. Helena in 1999, and (in the aftermath of a trademark dispute, and over the protests of the Taylor family) was renamed in 2010 as Gott's Roadside.
Founded and developed by brothers Joel and Duncan Gott, the restaurants embrace a California-casual cooking style, featuring microbrewed beer and boutique wines alongside chili cheese dogs and mini corn dogs for kids. In 2004, a second Gott's opened in the Ferry Building Marketplace in San Francisco, and in 2007, a third opened in the Oxbow Public Market of Napa. The St. Helena spot is a gourmet drive-in, with guests eating at bright red picnic tables on the lawn, while the other two locations are built in an urban, retro diner-style. In 2013, a fourth location opened in Palo Alto. The newest Gott's Roadside location is now open in Greenbrae in Marin County. The company remains privately owned.
In 2006 Taylor's received the James Beard Foundation Award designating them as one of America's Classics. In addition to The New York Times and Food & Wine, Taylor's/Gott's has been featured in USA Today, Bon Appétit, Gourmet,Travel + Leisure, Robert M. Parker Jr.'s The Wine Advocate. and the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives Season 1, Episode 9.

Ohio Winery: Powell Village Craft Winery
Taking a seat at the beautiful rustic bar at Powell Village Craft Winery, I couldn’t help but notice the young lady sitting next to me talking into her phone.   Overhearing her conversation, she was trying to set a date to move to Colorado.  Working out the logistics, she sat in front of her computer enjoying a glass of wine. I ordered a wine flight and soon thereafter, Katie had wrapped up her…

Other Lovers PT 2
Summary: Y/N and Rachel get to know each other while Bruce makes up for his birthday party fowl.
Pairing: Bruce Wayne x fem!reader
a/n: This is a SLOW BURN, we are burning slowly. Stay tuned because, in the next part, Y/N’s fiance might not be her fiance anymore, and is Bruce starting to have feelings??? This is also a part of the Out of My League series. [B (23) Y/N (22)] [Eventual slow burn with Bruce] [Y/N/N is your nickname]
Y/N and Carrie sat in Swan, the gaudiest, most expensive fashion boutique there was. It was way uptown compared to what they were used to, but Bruce had booked this as a part of her birthday celebration. Y/N, you can’t go to The Ocelot without a dress, he said as he handed her his platinum card. She called him a snob as she snatched it out of his hand, white in the face. I don’t even want to know the limit to this card if there even is one. Normally, she’d never let him pay for her, but… it was her birthday, so she allowed it, and he had pulled out all of the stops.
So, over cheese and wine and dresses, Y/N sat and finally came clean to Carrie about what happened with Russ. And Carrie… Carrie was pissed.
“Y/N/N,” she started, “Now you know I would love and I mean love to spend your birthday dinner with you. Obviously. But what the fuck?”
“Listen, Carrie, I just… I don’t even know what to do anymore.” She sat down her Riesling and shoved a piece of merlot cheese into her mouth, hoping it would numb the sting of her absent fiance. It didn’t.
“He’s your fiance!” she cried out, almost spilling her mocktail out of her hand.
“It’s just been like this with him. He’s hot, he’s cold. Anything that has to do with my job or Bruce, he just loses his mind!”
Y/N had shifted the dress she was trying on to tuck her legs underneath her. They had been dress shopping for a little less than an hour, but she could tell Carrie was getting tired; she had her treatments a few days ago, so they decided to sit and eat. But now that Y/N had blabbed on Russ, it was like all Carrie’s energy came flooding back to her.
“Can I speak freely?” Carrie had that fiery look in her eye as she sat up straighter. She knew this was something Carrie had been holding onto for a long time, but she wasn’t ever in the mood to hear it. She wasn’t even sure she was in the mood to hear it now, but… she nodded anyway. “It hasn’t been right with Russ for a while.”
“Carrie-”
“Hear me out,” she stopped her, holding up her finger and a piece of cheese. “You know I love Russ; we’ve all known each other since high school, but just because you’re with someone for a long time doesn’t mean you should stay with them.”
Y/N shook her head, “We’re just in a rough patch.”
“Your rough patch started way before Bruce Wayne,” she said, sighing, looking at Y/N, “I’m not saying make any rash decisions. I’m just saying think about it. Think about what’s good for you.”
It felt like pins and needles were in her eyes as hot tears dwelled at the tip of her lashes. She knew it had been rough with Russ, but she hadn’t cried about it, and she didn’t want to. Pulling herself together, she inhaled. “What do you think about the red, backless one over there.”
Carrie grinned.
-
Everyone looked towards the large group of ballerinas that filtered into The Ocelot, entertained, and who was leading them? Bruce Wayne himself. His staff set his table to the left of the staircase, and ironically, so was Rachels. What a coincidence! Harvey Dent had waved to him immediately, oblivious to the past relations Bruce had with his date, while Rachel gave him a knowing look like she already knew what he was up to.
Harvey stood to greet him with a pleasant, “I didn’t think we’d be seeing you tonight, Mr.Wayne.”
“Well, it is my restaurant, Harvey,” Bruce shook his hand politely. He glanced down at Rachel, and it was clear she didn’t take the bait and sat patiently in her chair. “I see you know my good friend, Rachel.”
She nodded over at the ballerinas disapprovingly, “I see you brought some friends of your own, Bruce.”
“She’s always scolding me,” he mumbled to Harvey.
Harvey looked almost disappointed, staring at the group of women, “We were going to see the ballerinas tonight.”
“Were you,” Bruce feigned a shocked look. “I’m so sorry. I offered to take them to dinner for all their hard work.”
“On a recital night?” Rachel said knowingly.
“Well, we can always push out tables together if you’d like to speak with them?”
Rachel rolled her eyes, aware of where this was going, while Harvey quickly protested as civilly as he could. Placing her hand on Harvey’s arm, Rachel asked Harvey to sit back down and assured him she was sure Bruce had other places to be, but Bruce’s attention moved elsewhere. A tiff was starting not too far from them. The workers were trying to kick two women out; it seemed their reservation had been taken over by his large table. He couldn’t see the women covered by the large group of hosts gathering, but he could hear their conversation.
“Are you kidding me? Bruce Wayne made this reservation for her himself!”
“You know what? Don’t worry about it.” He recognized that voice. Shit.
Mumbling, excuse me to a babbling Harvey, he walked over to the group of people in strides. Clearing his throat, it was like Moses at the Red Sea. The hosts quickly split down the middle, and all went silent, wide-eyed. The manager, whom he recognized before, became red in the face, but that wasn’t the red he focused on. Turned at the waist, there she was bare-backed, draped in red, and annoyed, as per usual.
Before he could get a word in, the manager rushed to him and blurted out, “We assure you, Mr. Wayne, it’s being handled.”
She turned fully this time holding the arm of the other woman she was with, whom he could only assume was Carrie. “Really Bruce? The entire Gotham Ballet.”
“I’m sorry. I don’t even know how your reservation got moved,” he looked toward one of the hosts. “I want them in the green room. Not too far from my table, but far enough the noise won’t be a problem. Anything they want, they get. Charge it to my card.”
It was like someone had released the doves. White jacketed, hosts and waitresses flew around wildly and without question. Grabbing place settings, table cloths, moving around CEO’s, politicians, and models. Carrie was in awe mouth open. Y/N couldn’t help but feel the same way. Everyday she worked for Bruce Wayne, she was shocked by the power he had. She saw his odd moments. She saw his darkcircles when he came in office. She saw him fall asleep during meetings. She watched him sit behind her and watch New Girl with her while she was on break. He claimed he didn’t normally have time for Television.
Y/N focused her attention on him, “You don’t know how our reservation was moved, but you invited the entire ballet?”
“Listen, it was a whim,” he grinned.
“Does whim mean Rachel-”
“-and happy birthday by the way,” he cut her off and pulled her in for a hug. Her dress was silky under his fingertips as he slid his hands around her. His hands were cold against her hot bare back. She shivered in his arms, but accepted the hug and slipped her hands over his shoulders, leaning onto her tiptoes. Still hugging Y/N, he extended a hand to the woman Y/N was with, “You must be Carrie I’ve heard so much about you.”
Carrie took his hand, grinning at the two, “It’s so nice to meet the man Y/N has been bullying every day.”
He laughed leaning his head back, “I’m glad we’re on the same page.”
Y/N peeked over his shoulder and spotted Rachel staring at the pair, “Oh is that who I think it is over there?”
Before he could say anything else, Y/N’s staring had caught Rachel's attention. It seemed to finally be the bait she needed to stand and approach Bruce… or should I say Y/N. Harvey, struggling to keep up with her, seemed surprised by the sudden change in demeanor.
“Bruce!” she smacked his arm mischievously. “How rude of you! Introduce Harvey and me to your new lady friends.”
She smiled over at Carrie, but the way she looked at Bruce and Y/N could only be described as suggestive. Y/N stuck out her hand to shake Rachel's. She took her hand in return, eyeing her small, dainty engagement ring placed on Y/N's left ring finger. Anyone else looking at the ring would have immediately noticed it was not big or bold enough to be from Bruce Wayne, cracked with time, and clearly a fake stone, yet she still raised her eyebrow at the pair. Bruce and Y/N noticed the shift and suddenly started interrupting each other, creating some sort of rushed mashed sentence.
“Oh, he’s my boss, I’m engaged-” “She’s my assistant, Rachel-” “We work together-” “I wouldn’t say we’re that good of friends-” “I wouldn’t say we’re anything above coworkers-” “More like work friends-”
The smile on Rachel’s face grew in amusement. Oh, to tease Bruce Wayne. “So you work for him? I hope you’re keeping him on his toes.”
“On his toes and in office,” Y/N gossiped proudly. “Though now, with this ballerina fiasco, I have another thing to add to my plate. I almost lost my reservation because of this shit!”
“Do I have to ask how this is going to affect you?” Bruce asked, and Y/N’s attention completely shifted to him.
“Do you have no common sense? The entire restaurant is going to have to shift their reservations. Who do you think the governor is going to be calling when he can’t get a reservation for his anniversary? You. Because it’s your restaurant.” Y/N turned quickly back to Rachel. “I hope he hasn’t been bothering your date too much.”
She shrugged, “I’ve known Bruce since we were kids. Trust me, I can handle it. It’s so nice to see someone else who doesn’t just fawn over him.”
As they bantered, Bruce looked at Carrie and just shook his head. She snickered. He should have known if Y/N and Rachel ended up in the same space together, shenanigans would ensue.
“I hate to interrupt,” he spoke. No, he doesn’t, Rachel mumbled to Y/N, who grinned at her. “Okay, I don’t, but you should probably sit down and eat before my restaurant closes.”
Bruce had taken Y/N by the shoulder, to which she rolled her eyes, and offered Carrie his elbow, leading them over to the green room. The walls were draped in a deep green floral wallpaper. It was eclectic, like nothing she would expect from Bruce’s restaurant, especially after seeing his family home. There was a large fountain, big enough to swim in, placed in the center of the room and decorated with tigers. A curious thing to have at a restaurant called The Ocelot, she thought. But that’s still not what immediately caught her attention when she entered the room. Their table was to the right of the large gaudy fountain, decorated with a tiered birthday cake, almost as tall as the table. She held her breath, and Carrie gasped.
He was still behind her, but his hand slipped to her waist. The back of his palm was against the hot skin of her back, and his fingers traced the edge of her silk dress by her hip bone. With a wave of his hand, the servers lit the candles and dimmed the lights, illuminating what could only be described as a frosted tower of light glistening against the water of the fountain. Leaning, lips against her ear, he whispered, “I hope this makes up for earlier. Happy Birthday.”

I was chatting to my uncle about his time in service the other day and what it was like in 2000 when gay people were allowed to openly serve in the military for the first time.
I didn't tell him I was researching fanfic, he just likes chatting with me about politics and history because I'm his Pet Socialist Nephew and it's like a whole new world for him.
(My aunt worked for MI5 and they met in Cyprus while both were deployed; I'm pretty sure they're the reason I got to the late stages - NePoTiSm - but then I disappointed them to become a Tofu-Eating Wokerati Teacher. Yes, I am an ex-Tory, let's not.)
He was a lawyer in the RAF and spent most of his time prosecuting soldiers for misconduct. There is shit he has to take to his grave, especially surrounding the Gulf War. But he remembers dishonourable discharges for "sodomy" and how distasteful he found the "whole sordid business" when there were people still serving who had done "unspeakable things", and he told me about the slow dismantling of those laws, with the help of Stonewall, and the impact it had on so many men and women in the service.
He recalled one particularly terrifying NCO who often ridiculed him for his belly (my uncle likes cheese and wine, a lot; we got through a bottle of Merlot each...I'm pretty sure he opened a second) kissing his partner of 16 years openly, in full uniform, at the 2008 London Pride; how this "incorrigible" man broke down in tears because for the first time he wasn't torn in half: he could love both his country and his partner openly.
Now, this story is a fucking gold mine for me... Cause...
Can you imagine the 141 going to 2008? They think they're going to support their pet bi-disaster, Soap. Figure they'll go in No2s cause they'll be drinking and walking a lot. Then fucking Ghost rocks up in full No1s, shoes polished to an inch of their life like he's turned out for the god damn Queen.
When Soap teases him about how Extra he's being for lil ol' him, Ghost simply sighs and says, "I've waited my whole life for this, Johnny... I'm doin' it right."
That's how Ghost "comes out" to the 141, because of course it is. He doesn't do things in half measures. Soap looks him up and down and tries to play it cool, but Price can see how he's vibrating on the spot and figures they should fall in before Soap executes an unscheduled halo dive on Ghost's dick...
Johnny gets his kiss; by the lions of Nelson's column, under the admiral's watchful eye. Ghost's beret clenched in fist, strong arms clutching him so close, like Ghost's worried the moment might still be snatched from him at any point.
Johnny won't ever mention the tears he tastes between their lips. Some things just need to be let go.

“Brock, it’s getting to the point where we’re gonna need to start thinking about baby names,” You said one day after he came back from practice. You just hit 32 weeks and you found out you would be having a daughter at 20 weeks. Now, it was setting in that you only had 8 weeks left of pregnancy, and you knew it would fly by. The last thing you wanted was to go into early labor and not have a name prepared for her. “I made a list.”
“Is this a serious list or a suggestion list?” Brock teased, knowing that you liked to joke about names in your earlier stages of pregnancy.
“Are you saying none of my names are serious?” You started tearing up, thinking that he did not like any of the names you suggested, serious or not. “Ashley Purdy is cute.”
“I’m not talking about Ashley,” Brock laughed as he wrapped his arms around you and pulled you into his side. “I’m more so talking about Felony.”
“Felony Purdy would be cute if a felony wasn’t a crime!” You defended as you shot up. You looked down at your bump with a frown as you rubbed around it before glaring at Brock. “If you suggested anything good, maybe I wouldn’t get my hopes up for certain names.”
“You said Rosacea, and I countered with Rose and Rowan. What do you mean?” He laughed in disbelief, trying not to sound defensive or condescending. He knows your mental state has been fragile lately, and the last thing he wants is to hurt your feelings.
“Rose is such a common name, and I don’t like Rose Purdy,” You grumbled as you crossed your arms and leaned back into his side. “What about Calorie? It’s like Valerie but different.”
“Calorie? Please tell me you’re joking,” He chuckled in disbelief but immediately stopped when he noticed you were not laughing. In fact, you had tears in your eyes that were about to fall. “Wait, babe, please hear me out. Calorie, you do know what it means right?”
“It’s cute, Brock. You don’t have to talk to me like a toddler. I know what calorie means,” You sighed unhappily, but after a minute of him staring at you, you realized why he was straying you away from that name. “I stand corrected. What about Brie? That’s cute! Little Brie Purdy!”
“Brie as in Brie cheese?”
“And now you’ve ruined it,” You moaned, throwing your head back. “What about Merlot? I think that’s adorable.”
“You’re just manifesting our daughter to be a whiner,” Brock joked, but it fell flat to you. “Why don’t we stick with more traditional names? Like Elizabeth, Miranda, or Diana?”
“They’re too common!” You cried out as you turned to face Brock, holding his face in your hands. “We are never going to find the perfect name for her. I already feel like I’m failing as a parent, and I haven’t even started.”
“Maybe we could wait to see her, and it will just come to us?” Brock offered. “I would hate for us to find a name we like and take one look at her and think it doesn’t fit her, y’know?”
“Oh my gosh! You’re so smart, Brock! Why didn’t I think of that?” You gasped with a smile.
“You just have a little bit of pregnancy brain,” Brock comforted as be placed a kiss on your nose, “Don't stress it too much. We’ll find the perfect name for her when she gets here. Until then, I don’t wanna hear you stressing over her name anymore, got it?”
“No promises, but I won’t settle on one,” You laughed as you finally leaned in to connect your lips to his.
~
When the time came, to say you felt unprepared would be the understatement of the century. You started early labor while Brock was at an away game, but his mom was a huge help. Through everything, she stayed by your side along with your support system, and together, they all helped you through the hours of pain you endured. Thankfully, he was able to make it by the time your daughter was born.
After a few hours of recovering, you decided that you were rested enough to hold your daughter, so that’s what you were doing. Listening to the Niners game that Brock had to leave early while she slept, you could not take your eyes off of her. She was the perfect combination of you and Brock. She had your hair color and his facial structure. Her eyes that were currently closed were bright blue, which the nurses told you would most likely get darker over time, but they were beautiful nonetheless. You could stare at her for hours, and you probably were because, at one point, Brock sat behind you to help you hold her up, noticing your arms start dropping.
In the comfortable silence, names flew around in your head, trying to see if any of them would stick with her. Brock was still sitting with you, looking down at her also thinking about names. Then, it was like a lightbulb went off, and the name you thought of was perfect. You were thinking that nothing else fit right, and this was meant to be her name. Brock caught onto the shift in your body posture as you pulled her closer to your body.
“Did you think of the name?” He whispered as he leaned his head onto your shoulder, tightening his hold around you and your daughter.
“Yeah, I did,” You said back just as quietly before turning away from her for the first time in forever to look at Brock. You muttered, “I think she looked like a Felony Purdy.”
“I swear if you’re serious,” He trailed off with a light laugh. “Please tell me you’re not serious.”
“No, I’m not. I’m just screwing with you,” You teased as you leaned back you bonk your head against his shoulder. “Can’t I make a joke?”
“I thought we were having a moment,” He laughed as he kissed your forehead.
“We are,” You pointed out before looking back down to your daughter. You smiled as you thought of the name again before looking back over to Brock seriously. “What about Emerson?”
“Emerson Y/n Purdy,” He said as if to test the name out before smiling wide. “I think it’s perfect. Just like you. Thank you for being the best partner and parent to our little Emerson.”
“Thank you for being the best partner and best supporter I could have during this journey,” You said sincerely. “And don’t worry, she will always be my little felony.”
“You know, some parents have cutsy names for their kids like munchkin, sugar bear, or ducky, but you want to nickname our daughter felony?” Brock replied in disbelief.
“She needs to know what her almost-name was!”

Previous Chapter | Masterlist | Next Chapter
When you walked out of  the door you thought that it would be the last you ever saw of Jake Seresin. He was now the enemy. Only of use to you as a muse. The last place you ever expected to see him was your concert.
Now you couldn’t get those green eyes out of your mind.
Every time you closed your eyes it was like you were right back there. Staring at him, singing to him and hoping he felt every ounce of pain that you had felt. If you didn’t know any better you would have thought you saw remorse in his eyes.
But you did know better.
Jake Seresin didn’t feel bad for what he had done – only that he had been caught. Or at least that’s what you told yourself. You had convinced yourself that he didn’t care about what he had done because it made it easier.  Or at least you thought it did.
“So he was really there?” Julie’s, your sister, voice came through the phone. As soon as you got a moment to breathe you facetimed her. Making sure you were alone for the rest of the night in your hotel suite. The empty half of the bed was taken up by all your comfort foods; a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream, nacho cheese bugles, fried mushrooms, mozzarella sticks and crab rangoon, and of course a bottle of Merlot. An odd combination of foods that your trainer would surely yell at you for having. Shortly after it had all arrived you realized you might have gone overboard, but dammit you were upset.
Who the fuck did he think he was coming to your concert? Standing that close to the stage, close enough you had been able to make out his features. There was no way he didn’t know it was your concert. It wasn’t like you were some up and comer, you were selling out venues worldwide, everyone knew who you were. And he had the gall to show up and look you dead in the fucking eye? The same way he had when you caught him with his pants around his ankles and his dick in a pussy that wasn’t yours.
“Yeah,” you chomped on a mozzarella stick as you spoke. “I mean so close I could have touched him.” The tips of your fingers tingled at the idea of touching him while your mind cringed at the thought. The only way you would want to touch Jake was with your fist to his face.
Julie watched as you stuffed a fried mushroom in your mouth and then washed it down with a swig of wine straight from the bottle. “You’re clearly taking it well.” You shot a look at the sarcastic tone in her voice and flipped her off through your laptop camera.
“Act like you would take it any better.” You loved Jake. At one point in time you had wanted a family and a future with him. up until the very bitter end, he had been perfect. That should have been the sign that it was too good to be true.
Julie just rolled her eyes and picked up her phone, letting you stew for a moment. Only you couldn’t stand the quiet, not in this moment. There were so many emotions you were feeling that you needed to get out so you just started talking.
“I mean…why was he even there? Was he with his girlfriend? Did he end up with that slut? I know you keep tabs on him.” You continued to babble on, shoving a different piece of food in your mouth every so often. Like the good big sister she was, Julie just let you talk. She knew this was what you needed, to just word vomit over facetime with her until you couldn’t anymore. It was something you had done since you were little, before you started writing music.
How long you had been rambling on and on, asking questions that were answered only by short phrases as your sister scrolled her phone, you weren’t sure. You were mid question when the message from Julia popped up on your computer and phone screen simultaneously. It was a link to a tabloid article. Immediately your stomach started churning, but you shakily clicked the link anyway.
Soul Song: Could this man be the heartbreaking mystery muse?
Fuck. You knew someone would speculate, but you hadn’t expected it to happen this fast. Since the concert ended you had made an effort to avoid social media, trying  to avoid this exact situation. You weren’t exactly in the right headspace to deal with his face being plastered all over every media platform. With everything you had you hoped for a juicier story would pop up and people would forget about this come next week.
Something  told you that you weren’t that lucky.
“Maybe this is some sort of divine intervention? Y’know like fate stepping in.” Your nose scrunched up and you gagged at your sister’s suggestion.
There was no fucking way that fate was trying to push you back towards Jake. After everything you went through? If that was the case the universe was some sort of twisted bitch.
The facetime lasted only a few minutes longer before your brother-in-law snatched your sister’s attention away. Which didn’t bother you, you were glad that at least one of you had found love. Of course it might have stung less if she hadn’t gotten engaged a mere two weeks after you’d caught who was supposed to be the love of your life balls deep in another woman.
You sink underneath the covers, cocooning yourself in the crisp white hotel duvet while continuing to stuff your mouth with the depression snacks. During the facetime you hadn’t paid much attention to what was playing on the TV, but now you were acutely aware of the fact that How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days was playing. Against your better judgment you didn’t change the channel and by the end of it there were fat, silent tears rolling down your cheeks.
Seeing Jake had brought back a whole slew of feelings and memories you had only let come through in your music. Now your mind was forcing you to remember them. The dam you’d built was starting to break and you were doing everything you could to patch it back up. You couldn’t even find it in you to write, which was what you should have been doing. Getting it all out on paper, but your body wouldn’t let you. You just kept crying on the bed surrounded by food that was bound to give you heartburn tomorrow.
Tumblr media
When you had fallen asleep you weren’t too sure, but you knew you had fallen asleep crying. That much was evident by the massive dehydration headache you woke with. The pain was only exacerbated by the ringing of your cell phone.
“Hello?”
“Hey,” the voice of your manager came through. “The venue had a water main break so we’re postponing the concert until tomorrow.” You groaned. This was never fun. Canceling shows, or even just postponing them, always sucked. You hated disappointing your fans, but this was one of those instances where you knew you couldn’t prevent it. There wasn’t another venue available that was big enough to host your concert tonight.
“Okay,” as much as it sucked it was probably a good thing. You needed a day to cope with the events of the night before. “Keep me updated.” Martin promised he would, just like he always did and then hung up.
You were slow to get up due to the pounding in your head, but that would soon be remedied by the extra strength ibuprofen in your suitcase. Even though you’d only crawled right back in bed after taking it.
For a while you stared up at the ceiling. Not really wanting to look on your phone and see what the tabloids had come up with now. You knew eventually you would have to address it. Honestly you were surprised Martin hadn’t brought it up on the phone call, but maybe that was due to the more pressing matter at hand. Whatever the reason, you were thankful, because honestly you didn’t know what to say.
You had kept Jake’s identity underwraps because as much as you hated him, you didn’t want this to affect him. Fans could be ruthless and they wouldn’t stop at Jake. They could go after his family, too, and they didn’t deserve to be targeted because Jake was a grade A fucking asshole. Revealing his identity wasn’t something you wanted to do anytime soon, but you weren’t sure you would have that choice now. You could only hope that Martin and your PR firm would manage to keep this thing at bay.
Ignoring your phone was something you could only do for so long. Especially knowing you needed to check it for updates about the venue. At least that was the excuse you told yourself as you surfed through the tabloids. All of them had different theories about the man in the crowd. Before you knew it you were deep diving on Jake’s sister’s instagram. You still kept in touch with them, mostly through social media. Though you never asked about Jake and they never brought him up.
When the whole thing had gone down they were just as, if not more pissed than you. His mom had cried and both Olivia and Kate nearly cut him off. They’d loved you like their own and fully supported you leaving Jake. It was why you still kept in touch with them, because despite it all, you did love them like family.
You didn’t even realize you were calling until you heard her voice, soft and sweet with that slight Texas accent that you’d lost over the years of living in California.
“Kate? Hi, how are you?” It had been way too long since you’d actually called Kate. Most of your catching up was done via instagram messages.
To say that Kate was surprised to see your name pop up on her screen wouldn’t be too off the mark. She had seen the articles with the images of her brother and you. Though she had expected Jake to reach out to her first. Not that she wasn’t happy to hear from you. She did miss you, but she understood why you didn’t come around anymore. What Jake had done to you was downright disgusting and for a good while Kate hadn’t even wanted to claim him as her brother.
Kate knew that Jake still loved you. She knew before he admitted it to her. Throwing himself into his military career was her little brother’s way of distracting himself from the pain. Jake had only thrown himself more into work when your career took off and your face was around every corner.
“I’m guessin’ you didn’t call to catch up?” You could hear the smile in Kate’s voice. It was oddly comforting, more comforting than what an ex-boyfriend’s sister should be. “So, ask away, I’ll tell you everything you want to know.”
You didn’t even know where to start. Actually you weren’t even sure you wanted to start. Maybe this phone call had been a bad idea. You should just make up some sort of excuse and hang up…no. Kate would see right through that. Finally you willed yourself to speak, not bothering to really think about the question you were asking, just getting something out.
“Why was he there?”
“Not sure, didn’t even know he was goin’ and I haven’t heard from him since.” Okay…so that didn’t really give you any answers. What answers you were looking for you still weren’t sure of, but you wanted to know something. “He is stationed in San Diego, maybe it was a last minute thing?” That still didn’t explain why he went.
Jake hadn’t even bothered to reach out and really apologize to you, not that you really expected him to. He had no reason to show up to your concert. No reason to get tickets that close. Even if it had been a last minute invite by a friend, why would he accept a ticket to your concert?
“Did he ever admit that he was wrong?”
“Yeah.” The sound that left you was halfway between a sigh and hum. You knew you should believe that, but so much of you was still holding onto the narrative that he didn’t think he was wrong. That Jake was the stereotypical cheater who only cared about his own happiness.
The next question fell out like it was vomit.
“Is he seeing anyone?”
You didn’t know why you wanted the answer. It didn’t matter. Jake was your past and you were determined to keep him there. If he was seeing someone it wasn’t your business.
“If you call putting his dipstick to good use seeing people, then yeah I guess.” The softest laugh left you at her way of phrasing it. Leave it to Kate to bring a little bit of humor to the situation.
The two of you talked a little longer. Less about Jake and more about how everyone was doing. Thanks to social media you knew Olivia had just had another baby, her third, and that Kate was due to pop in little over a month. It was therapeutic, catching up and reminiscing with her. It gave you a feel-good sense of nostalgia.
“Does he still lo-” you stopped yourself before the question was fully out of your mouth, but Kate knew what you were going to ask.
“I think that’s something you should ask him yourself.” She said it as though talking to Jake would be easy. As if it was something you even wanted to do. Maybe Kate knew it was what you needed.

These are all the things I want to grow and have the seeds for this year, though some things are missing from this list. I still need more soil, most of the produce goes to the senior center so if anyone wants to throw me 3 dollars for a bag of dirt it goes to a good cause, I also save seeds and distribute them to neighbors and some of the people at the senior center. This blog is my only income source as I am an unpaid live-in aide for an elderly woman. No pressure though. Also if anyone just wants to put gardening discussions in my inbox I am totally up for that!

Do you have any advice for someone who's making a world that's like the real world, but isn't? I'm making a fantasy setting where one of the worlds are more or less no different from the real world, but it's origin and events are different.
I think I'll have to come up with new countries to represent actual ones, but lots of foods and animal breeds are named after real places; so I'm kind of stumbling.
Basing a Fictional World Off Our World
Things with Location-Specific Names
Here's the thing... with very few exceptions, most things that have location specific things are just one variety of a much bigger group of things. For example, Javan kingfishers are just a type of kingfisher. Cheddar cheese is just a type of semi-hard cheese. So, if you find yourself wanting to include a food, animal breed, or anything else named after a real place, ask why you need to be that specific and why you can't be more general. Why say Javan kingfisher when you can just say kingfisher? (Or even use a location from your story instead?) Why say Merlot when you could just say red wine? (Or, again, use a location from your story instead?) Sometimes, you may come across something that isn't a cultivar, breed, or type where the location can be dropped. For example, if you drop the "Brussels" from "Brussels sprouts," you just get "sprouts" which isn't the same thing. In a case like this, you can look for alternative names, play off of the scientific name, or just come up with a whole new name. If there's a place called Belya in your story, why not call them Belya sprouts? Then, take the opportunity to describe them as looking like miniature cabbages.
