The choice to put Una Chin-Reily on a Starfleet recruitment poster in the late 2370s seems a nod to the extraordinary person she is and her exemplary service, but Boimler’s enthusiasm for her as a personal hero cannot mask the fact of what Starfleet execs are really doing here: while it is Starfleet tradition to honour esteemed personnel from its centuries of history, we have to look at the poster as a product of its time: it seems clear that, shortly after the devastating death toll and the rapid militarisation of the Dominion War, putting a prominent figure of the Great Exploration Age - and notedly someone who had not served in the Klingon War - as the poster person for Starfleet is an indictment that contemporary young people of the Federation are not drawn to the service as it is in their time anymore.
Critically, Starfleet has to use somebody from a 120 years ago, a timeframe that would lap generations of even especially long lived member species like Vulcans or Denobulans, to attract new recruits. Boimler says himself that seeing Una as a representative and her motto - “Ad astra per aspera” was: “Uh, it was a really big reason why I joined.” Clearly there is a wealth of recognisable Starfleet officers from 2370 and onwards, but their entanglement in the Dominion War, or at least in the Borg threat makes them unsuitable as role models for people like Boimler who cannot help but associate these contemporaries with the horrors of war and intergalactic conflict. Thus, the retreat to a “safe” historical narrative, with Starfleet still being about peaceful exploration reflects the growing divide between the realities of a colonised galaxy, the ongoing need of new bodies to fill the posts on all those ships and space stations and the aspirations and values of young people today. In this essay I will question whether Starfleet can keep its promise of scientific integrity in the face of growing political unrest in the UFP and ask what “Number One” herself would have thought about-

if yall dont know whats happening in British politics right now, the guy who is like 90% likely to become the next pm, who is the leader of the (previously) more left wing party labour has been systematically removing all the left-wing MPs (members of parliament) who are likely to get re-elected and telling them they cannot stand as a labour MP at the election in july. he has been replacing them with people who are more right wing, for example one of them has a day job as a ceo of a privatised healthcare company, and another is literally an israel lobbyist. labour is becoming a right wing, racist, and blatantly pro-israel party. if labour gets in, it will no longer be "ohhh we totally cant take a stand on israel :///" they are likely to become explicitly pro-israel. they have abandoned all their left wing policies. they will be the tories 2.0, but worse in many areas. it feels like this country is copying americas lead with one more """left wing""" party whos campaign line seems to be "we're not as bad as the other guys!" whos policies suck ass as they can freely become more right wing and not what the public wants because "there's no better option". it SUCKS. and its NOT TRUE.
if you're in the uk, please look at your constituency and try to vote green, or independent, or whoever isnt labour or tory. party politics are failing us, we are NOT a two party country, we can do better than labour.

this is a long shot but if you live in the uk it’d mean THE WORLD if you could email your MP about the upcoming parliamentary meeting on myalgic encephalomyelitis, which is the condition makes me bedbound. ME is life-ruining and the govrnmnt needs to hear people screaming about it. here’s a template email that you can edit and send to your local mp!! (before 15th november.) these meetings can help bring real change, but only if MPs actually attend.
for the personal experience part, you can say “I know someone with ME, and it urgently needs biomedical research, proper social care support & healthcare!” for the purpose of this email, you know me and we are bffs <3

if hyth had been an ascian he would have greatly benefited everyone on all sides because he'd have been 100% onto fandaniel's bullshit early on and just have calmly murdered him without a word said
elidibus: where's fandaniel
hyth: he was planning to kill zodiark and restart the final days so I fed him to a morbol
elidibus: what
hyth: what

If this MP is so intimidated by drawing pins and a placard, why did they become an MP? Do they go into WHSmiths and just breakdown in fear? When campaigning do they have to be photoshopped into pictures containing placards as they couldn't stand being there in person?

Girlweek day 4! It looks blurry as hell to me in the post editing but hopefully it won't be if you click on it!
Title reads: "Questionable Journalism: The Misadventures of Salt Middle School Newspaper Club's Top Investigators"
(sorry i chose really shitty contrasting colors and i'm too tired to fix it now >_>)
So I don't really know how to explain myself on this, I don't even know what it is. I was just thinking Emi needs better friends and I thought "Maybe she'd get along with Mezato"
Which turned into...the fake cover of some spin-off manga where Emi joins the newspaper club in the hopes of getting to experience/hear about more stuff in the world to fuel her writing, and gets shown the ropes by Mezato, and then they go investigate stuff together.
God I wish I had the spoons/skills to actually do this lol
No title version under the cut: (it was originally just this and then I realized I left a lotttt of empty space that ought to be filled, thus the fake manga cover)

Reminder that a French MP this year performed a nazi salute and got a "rule reminder" as a punishment
But showing a Palestinian flag gets you a 2 week suspension and a public burning in every national media.

Between the Reposts
Between the reposts, of racoons with hats and fandoms of bread that can calculate stats is pictures of children dying guns drawn at their heads and if they are not yet dead then they will not Survive this. Between all the reposts, of famous explorers and stories about childhood boarders is letters from their mothers begging for some other reality for their children to be brought back to them as they are left there crying. Between the bloody reposts, of characters and their cats lovers and newly decorated flats is the news of the 'war' news of the 'war' news of the torture. Dogs, butterflies, BUY A NEW PC, my brother is eating cheese, I HATE APRICOTS, this is the best Pokémon, I love my dad, shitty books, how to film your heartbeat, I lost my bag crowds out the hungry, crowds out the dead, crowds out the hungry, crowds out the dead. The noise speaks volumes, and only noise will be what's left.

On Wednesday 21st February 2024 the motion to call for a ceasefire was tabled and therefore never voted on by parliament. If you are a British citizen then please follow the link to email your MP about how wrong this is (just your name, email and postcode required) and if you are not then please reblog this post.
"I am one of your constituents, and am writing to ask you to press the government to support an immediate ceasefire and other measures to protect Palestinians who have so far survived Israel’s brutal attacks on the Gaza Strip, which have so far killed more than 29,000.
Over 100 Palestinians were killed across the Gaza Strip from Israeli shelling on the night of Wednesday 21 February – the majority of them being women and children. Whilst the UK parliament descended into shameful chaos over a vote that never came to be, Israel was dropping bombs on Rafah ahead of a looming ground offensive.
During the day on 21st February, thousands of constituents came to exercise their democratic right and peacefully lobby MPs in parliament. The unprecedented number of people queuing in the rain for hours to see their MP had a simple message to deliver: Support an unambiguous call for an immediate ceasefire now, as articulated in a motion tabled by the SNP.
The subsequent disgraceful display within parliament on 21st February reflects the UK’s overall response to Israel’s atrocities in Gaza. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has handed down an interim ruling affirming there is plausible evidence Israel is committing genocidal acts against the Palestinian people, yet our government is still selling weapons to Israel and has suspended funding to UNRWA, the primary agency supporting the needs of Palestinian refugees, including more than 1.5 million in Gaza.
The UK has an obligation to comply with the ICJ ordered provisional measures. This means taking action to end Israel’s war crimes and ensure humanitarian aid can reach Gaza. It is urgent for MPs to use their position to:
Call for a complete and immediate ceasefire in Gaza;
Press the UK government to immediately suspend all arms sales to Israel;
Demand the UK meets its obligations in relation to the ICJ’s provisional measures, including ensuring humanitarian aid reaches Gaza by reinstating funding to UNRWA.
Please show your commitment to these fundamental principles by signing EDM 377 ‘International Court of Justice Ruling on Gaza and the UK’s duties under the Genocide Convention’.
In recent days, some politicians and others in the media have suggested that for constituents to lobby their MP in relation to this important issue, in person or by email, constitutes improper behaviour or even harassment. I reject any such characterisation and I hope that you do too."
