Another thing that hits me with that scene after the Dance Marathon is that Jess went to find Rory at the bridge the same way Luke sought him out there after the accident. And yeah, part of it is that the bridge is just THEIR place now, but Jess goes to offer Rory the same kind of quiet sympathy that Luke offered him. And if Rory hadn't contradicted his statements about Dean or brought up the Everything that was going on between THEM, I could see Jess just sitting there with her quietly the way Luke did too.

Heyyy so i encountered or rather reencountered a Dutch song by comedian Claudia de Breij (went to a show of hers today! Was great) and it most of it made me think of jess? And his like father-y relationship with Luke?? If they were both less emotionally constipated, that is. I translated it, was wondering what you thought <3

Reading this actually made me tear up. it fits them so well. I've been reading and re-reading the lyrics for the past 5 minutes and every time I get tears in my eyes.

Jess and Luke's relationship is very dear to me. it's one of the primary reasons why s3 is my favorite season. even at his most destructive, luke loved jess so much and jess did too, even if he didn't realize it until he grew up. like that scene when jess wouldn't comes back to stars hollow for liz's wedding but only agrees later because luke asks him to? and when jess almost freezes in his car because he's a stubborn idiot? and luke waits in his truck until he made sure jess got into the dinner safely? it makes me tear up every time. they're both too emotionally stunted but they care so much about each other.

There's been a lot of good discussion today about Luke's "parenting" skills (or lack thereof) with Jess, and one thing I wanted to bring out is how, intentionally or not, this parallels Lorelai's struggles with parenting. From the way Luke acts when he's trying to "put his foot down" with Jess, I've long suspected that Luke's father was a strict, authoritarian type, but who also didn't follow through much (both because that style of parenting was very common when Luke was growing up, and because people who haven't put a lot of thought into parenting tend to default to whatever their own parents did, and Luke has also said his parents "never discussed anything"). It's often seemed to me that Lorelai could only conceive of two ways to be a parent: the "best friend" or sister figure, or "playing the Mom Card," which seems in her mind to be synonymous with Emily. That's it. Those seem to be the only options in Lorelai's mind. So it's interesting to me that Luke too seems to vacillate between the roles of Brother (all the sarcastic teasing and mockery) and The Authoritarian with Jess as well.
