Life Of A Highschool Vampire Chapter 10: Gym Rat

Summary: After many requests from his sister and finding nothing better to do, Kai goes to the gym, and among the stench of bacteria, sweat, and body oils Kai picks up the stink of a filthy rat...

Kai barely managed to suppress a disgusted hiss as his nose was assaulted by the robust odors of the Best Body Studio as he entered the building. The only reason he was even in a place like this was that that brat he called a little sister had finally worn him down. Almost every letter he got from her was filled with pleas for him to send some pictures of the hot guys at his school. But he couldn't blame her. They grew up in a humongous castle in the middle of a giant valley filled with forests and mountains.

The nearest village was at least a two-hour bat flight.

That paired with two extremely over-protective parents and her emerging teenage hormones would probably drive Nya into madness. So, mainly to shut Nya up, Kai 'borrowed' a camera from Jay and headed for the Best Body Studio. This studio had a rather basic set-up, including essentials such as a bench, some dumbbells, and resistance bands that could still provide a great workout. Other equipments the gym had were training benches, dumbbell sets, barbell sets, kettlebell sets, pull-up frames and bars, treadmills, stationary bicycles, and rowing machines.

At the other side of the gym from the entrance Kai could see a set of double doors that led to a dance studio.

Like most forms of aerobic or cardio exercise, dancing had many health benefits, including weight loss. This gym offered seven forms of dance that would help people to lose weight. These dance forms were Zumba, hip hop, belly dancing, freestyle dancing, pole dancing, ballet, and ballroom dancing. Kai might have been tempted to sign up for a dance class if it wasn't for the foul smells. As you entered the gym, it was easy to be drawn further in by the scents that invigorated to get those juices flowing for weight lifting.

These included vibrant citrus notes of orange, lemon, lime, and peppermint.

That quickly changed, however, when you left the front lobby and entered the main exercise area. The primary culprits of this stink were bacteria, sweat, and body oils, which built up inside synthetic fabrics and caused a literal stink. In addition to the subjecting gym apparel to those large quantities, the fabric the athletic outfits were made from was another odor contributor. Choosing to breathe through his mouth, Kai walked through the gym, looking for the perfect subject for a secret photoshoot.

It wasn't a busy day at the gym, so there weren't a lot of options.

But Kai didn't mind the lack of people. He hated being in crowded places and these photos wouldn't be for him. Nya would have to accept and deal with whatever he sent her. All of a sudden, Kai found himself freezing when his amber eyes locked onto the very muscular body of Cole Brookstone. He hadn't seen Cole since their brief meeting at the pet store. The human had his back to him as he lightly jogged on a treadmill, with the manacles of the chains jingling loudly like Christmas bells.

Kai could hear some of the other people in the gym snickering at the manacles, but Kai didn't look at them.

His eyes were fully focused on the raven-haired human in front of him. Cole was in dark orange shorts with a water bottle clipped to the side, and a tight, black tank top. He had AirPods in with rock music blasting out so loud that Kai was certain the noirette was going to go deaf. The young vampire was almost drooling as he paid close attention to how Cole's tank top wrapped around and stuck to his sweaty, toned body. Had Cole's skin always been that shiny or was it because of the sweat?

Just then Cole pressed a button on the treadmill and his jogging slowly stopped.

As Cole took a big gulp of the bottle, Kai began to panic. He wasn't ready to see Cole again and he didn't want to have to explain why he was here to his one-night stand/possible crush. Within the blink of an eye, Kai dashed to what he thought was an exit. As soon as the doors closed behind him, Kai relaxed and took a deep breath. Only to gag loudly and grip his nose tightly. It was like someone had ripped his nose off, set a fire inside the cavity, and then poured acid into it.

It was the familiar smell of garlic.

After Kai got over the shock, he opened his amber eyes and frowned when he saw that he was in a large kitchen. Then he remembered that this gym also offered lessons to teach people how to cook healthy meals. There were a few people in the class and they were all staring at him. That was when Kai noticed one was approaching him with a concerned look. The first thing Kai noticed about this stranger was his eyes. His eyes were bright blue, and his hair looked to be white and stood up straight in something like a crew cut.

He was wearing white pants and light grey shoes with a long-sleeved, cyan blue shirt under a thick, navy blue knitted vest.

He was also wearing a small, very shiny gold pin with the red letters of T.S.G engraved into it. Although his clothing was mostly hidden behind a bright pink and flowery apron. He looked to be around Kai's age, if not slightly older. Kai's eyes narrowed when he saw the small, gold cross hanging from this person's neck, but said nothing as he approached.

"Are you alright?" He asked warily.

"Yes, what's it to you?" Kai snapped impatiently.

"I didn't mean to offend you, I just noticed that you seemed distressed." The teen replied calmly and extended his hand for Kai to shake. "My name is Zane, are you here for the cooking class?"

"I'm Kai, and no, I was trying to leave but got turned around." He half-admitted, blushing at the memory of Cole's giant frame, but his scowl towards Zane never left his face. For some reason, being near this human upset his stomach.

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that; but if you are hungry you could try my dish; I could use an honest opinion and you seem like a person who speaks their mind." He smiled before heading to a counter and returning to a piping hot dish. Zane had made a perfect pan-roasted chicken with lemon-garlic green beans. He held it forward for Kai to take, but the vampire jumped back as if he had been burnt.

"NO! KEEP IT AWAY!" He all but screamed, startling everyone. Realizing this, Kai straightened up and cleared his throat. "S-Sorry, I'm allgeric to garlic." He added nervously. Something flashed in Zane's eyes, but it went unnoticed as he took a step back and put the dish down.

"I apologize, I didn't know that."

"It's alright, no harm done." He dismissed and started backing up towards the door. "Look, this has been fun, but I've gotten better places to be than this dump." He huffed, knowing that it was a lie, but any place would be better than being near that dish of death or this teen who was making Kai more and more uneasy.

"I understand, but if you happen to change your mind the front desk can pro-" Zane started, only to be cut off when the brunette suddenly bolted away and out of the gym. Zane sighed heavily and got to work cleaning up his workstation and packing up the meal he made for later. After gathering up his things and bidding his classmates goodbye, Zane began the walk home, taking time to enjoy the warmth from the setting sun and evening breeze.

Halfway through his commute, but pale teen pulled out his mobile and made a call.

The person picked up after the first ring and Zane spoke coldly and as emotionless like a robot.

"I have found him."...

One thing that cracks me up about kids media that shows the characters being high school age is how unrealistic it is that they don't use any swear words. Like most all high schoolers swear at least twice in one conversation to their next class, and that's the "good kids". yes there are people who just don't swear a lot, and it takes their friend group a minute to recover after hearing them casually say fuck.

But this is a whole friend group who don't swear at all. The hs friend groups who never cuss always think they're better than everyone else for it. And the people in these shows who do think they're better than everyone else are likely the people who would swear the most.

This doesn't even get into the weird shit high schoolers talk about.

I dunno if these guys will eventually get their own blog or not, but I got the idea of a necromancer becoming allies with a warden, then I remembered a character I created in high school, Mezrith, a melanistic deep elf necromancer who was also a vampire and his familiar a white cat he creatively named "Cat". So he's been reborn, and has been adopted into a warden pride.

You can interact with them and ask them questions if you want!

Voryth is actually Zylarath's sire.

Seraphis: Usually fairly lazy, but can be very aggressive and territorial like a normal warden. His colors are more towards greens. He will sometimes try to challenge Ophelion for leadership of the pride, but always fails. The big, powerful old warden can easily kick his ass to the surface and back again any time he tries. This never seems serious, and they always get along just fine after one of these noisy spats

Ophelion: Incredibly old and powerful. Thick in build, tall and muscular. The long bone growths denote his age and power. Ophelion is surprisingly patient, especially with Seraphis. His power is immense. Ophelion can flatten most other wardens simply due to age, experience, and size. His territory is vast and well established, and very healthy. He's a good pride leader, looking after Seraphis and Voryth and keeping them safe. He's sired cubs with both of the smaller wardens, though the pride doesn't have any cubs currently.

Voryth: Fairly chill. They may be where Zylarath got their friendly demeanor from. Voryth does have the natural territorial nature of a warden, but they generally don't really care too much. They leave all that stuff up to Ophelion. They very much look up to the big warden.

Mezrith: A deep elf who grew up in a viciously abusive home, seen as cursed due to a birth mark on his chest (Not shown, he keeps it covered). He was seen as a bane on the family he was born to, and his brother, Triew, was especially nasty to him. He ran away from home and took up studying necromancy when he was around 12 years old. He learned a lot as he grew, but he ended up getting exposed to the blood of a vampire, which caused him to turn. This angered him because it made necromancy MUCH harder. He found notes about wardens, and decided to try to seek out the sculk, to see if he could learn how their sentinels worked. If he could figure out how to harness sculk spores to animate corpses, it would take far less energy and he could get his vengeance. He eventually encountered Ophelion, who sensed that the deep elf was hurting and had been through a lot of pain and strife in his life. The big warden decided to adopt the elf into his pride, despite Mezrith being in the equivalent of his 30's. While he wasn't so sure at first, having a found family that treated him well made him feel a lot better. He ended up deciding against seeking vengeance because he realized it wasn't worth it. His family was cruel and chaotic, they'd have their own downfall given enough time and he would be thriving with his familiar and his new family. He's generally quiet, cranky, is not fond of people at all. He gets along well with the three wardens, though has a special bond with Ophelion.

"Cat": This is not her real name. Cat is a grimalkin, a creature that can be compared to a sort of fae cat. They are shapeshifters, able to take a human form, highly intelligent. They always have split tails and are poly-dactyl. Cat, of course, is not her real name. She posed as a normal cat to give Mezrith comfort when he was with his abusive family, and once he was away from them she revealed her true nature, shaking off the glamour spell that cloaked her. She decided to keep the name "Cat" because she found it amusing just how "creative" Mezrith was at naming. She's spoiled, can be sassy, confident, and not at all afraid of the wardens. Grimalkin are fierce and proud creatures, and incredibly powerful in their own right. She has a special bond with Voryth, often sitting on their shoulder. She is known to sometimes flirt with the warden in her human form, because seeing them get flustered amuses her. She's a bit of a trickster. She loves food.

I think it’s funny how much change and development I’ve made to the plot storyline in my head that I’ve been documenting for almost 3 years now. When I first came up with the concept there was going to be like magic and angels and faeries and a whole bunch of world building shit that did NOT fit together at all and made no sense. But now instead it’s a bunch of situations that are exactly as outlandish as the fantasy genre because of how fucked up they are. Nobody makes healthy or normal decisions.

#The characters who used to be angels got changed into just being med school college students #And instead of magic there’s more medical malpractice now #Well there was originally already some medical malpractice but now there’s just a whole lot more #The only real “fantasy” element I have now is like ghosts and reanimation of the dead #Which is significantly less high-fantasy than the initial idea of the “angel realm” or the rest of the shit I had planned #I like it better this way #I didn’t know how to shift the vampire characters into not being fantasy anymore since it didn’t fit but I came up with a solution #They’re just reanimated dead people who have most of the same qualities as a vampire but that’s just the side effects of being revived #And the “necromancers” that I initially wanted to write about are just people who bring corpses back to life using science #But they scam people and lie to them by marketing it as magic

Yes it is! I also love that song tbh. It is a Dean x Elena story, but with a healthy helping of Caroline x Elena and eventually Klaus x Elena as well. I don't even know if I can sum this one up, it came together as a collision of many many vibes so maybe I'll just list off some of those:

At this point in my life it was exactly a 10 minute walk to the bus stop to commute to work so you Know I was listening to All Too Well (10 Minute Version) pretty much every day, and in particular the line "just between us did the love affair maim you too?" vibed hard for what this verse became

for some reason New Constellations' outro and the continuous repetition of "what if there's more?" has always brought to mind a woman giving birth, I can't explain it, but that's just the association for me.

How would Elena's life had gone if Stefan and Damon never entered it?

How would knowing the Winchesters for most of her life change her?

How would Klaus react to finding his doppelganger if she was pregnant?

How would Dean handle Jessica's death if he was in a serious relationship when Sam lost her in the same way they lost their mother?

What exactly does it mean to be from a bloodline of women who all seem cursed to terrible fates? Does sharing a face make them a sisterhood even if their fates are different kinds of terrible?

What would Elena's life look like if she had a relationship with Isobel and also Katherine?

What would Alaric's life look like if his reason for becoming a vampire hunter died before he found him?

All of these questions and more I attempt to answer in New Constellations, coming to you idk maybe next lifetime if the way Addendum is progressing doesn't change anytime soon.

And just as he stumbles across the first inkling that she might not stay a sweet little girl forever; Elena Gilbert finds herself, for the first time, dreaming of someone other than Dean Winchester. Instead of his teasing green eyes, easy grin, and beat-up old brown leather jacket, there's her familiar blue eyes, cherubic grin, and that shining green satin dress.

my toxic trait is that i think alastor hazbin hotel is cool actually. sorry for not being immune to the red-coded new orleans serial killer with a jazz age radio-based persona and character design meant to evoke the image of a deer. not like he's fucking tailor made to cater to my interests or anything. i dont know whats wrong with me but every media i create just HAS to end up being a tragedy -_- like margo is intentionally like that because every character loses everything (due to their own actions!!!!!!!) but i sit down to write silly little fantasy and accidentally add the tragedy to it. it was supposed to be fun! who added the themes of loss and death to this shit!!!!!! it was supposed to be a fun silly fantasy gang adventure with clowns!!!!!!!!

#forever cursed to forever dance around the same handful of themes in every story i create #i cant even say this is beacuse of (traumatic experience of loss from 2011) because my first story ever #(mary sue vampire high school assassin if anyone cares) was ALSO a tragedy!!! and i started that in like 2007-2008 as an edgy middle school #and i think my 2020 rewrite of that story is acutally more optimistic than the orig because i think i killed off like 50% of the cast bc #i was 13 and thot it was so fuckign cool and dope to kill everyone in cold blood #anyway i think i just need to accept i will only every create tragedies and thats fine they can be funny about it but at its core its alway #a tragedy #a day in the life of steeve

actually im not ready for lucien and bonnie to have their baby so im happy the update isnt coming until march. i have time to mentally prepare for straud grandbabies 😁

not my brain trying desperately to think about planning my next oneshot instead of doing what I’m supposed to be doing which is reviewing the peloponnesian war to teach it tomorrow.

#i need to make these slides more simplified bc if i barely understand the politics my students sure the fuck wont #anyways i might make a post thinking about my oneshot but then im gonna make myself work #me and my flop 10-20 kudos v*ltron oneshots are having so much fun #i havent had this much personal satisfaction for this easy of an effort level in years it is making me love writing fic again #not that i dont love my bigger stories like i think about sinite parvula every single day and i think about the vampire western every day to #o but those both involve a lot of moving parts and foreshadowing and more characters to characterize and more details of timing and setting #and research etc like those are HIGH effort and I LOVE THAT i just am in graduate school so most of my life is high effort #and my burnout burned through fanfic writing as well #but these one shots where i am not googling a single goddamn thing and im just writing based on vibes and a constant reminder that #it is okay to suck bc thise fanom is so dead either no one will read it or they will be grateful for new content #so if my dialogue is clunky or my plot is contrived who gives a shit bc I am having fun and feeling emotions
