So I got this app, NHK for school, and it’s wonderful immersion for Japanese learners.

It’s made for school kids. It goes from grade one to middle/high school. (I’m using grade one, personally.)

They have a variety of school subjects. My favourite are the grammar and vocab ones, specifically these guys

Although I don’t understand a lot of what’s happening (I’m a TOTAL newbie. Only three weeks of Japanese under my belt) the little practice exercises after each section is so helpful!

I’m sure it would be fun for a high level learner as well, and it’s a nice way to get some insight into what kind of stuff Japanese children are taught, ahaha.

Here’s the one and only way to safely navigate this blog!

I’ll be updating this table of contents as I add things to the blog, and make it as clear and understandable as possible so no one has to go through the thousands of pages of kanji just to find one particular post.

On browser, the search bar at the top seems to only work by pressing the ‘Enter’ key and not by clicking on the little magnifying glass next to it. Under the search bar there are little icons that link to all kanji cards (sun), all vocabulary lists (star), all grammar lessons (moon) and my diary / study log posts (cloud).

Kanji

I’ve ordered all kanji by levels, and in each level by lessons in my kanji books and on WaniKani. Each kanji on each page links to a kanji card. The kanji cards first show the meaning and pronunciation as I first learn them on WaniKani, and under cut I’ll put some more info on them like radicals making up the kanji, different readings, other meanings etc... The More Kanji! post lists kanji that were not in the JLPT lists. They are ordered by frequency and I’ll be adding to this list as I study.

All kanji lists should look fine on both browser and mobile (apart for a few little things that I’m not sure how to fix).

I’m currently having troubles with the radicals’ list as not all of them are showing properly, I’ll upload it when I find a way to fix this.

Summer Studying Challenge

31st July - What do you like most about the beach?

Honestly I don’t like the beach that much, mainly because I don’t like sand or swimming, but I do enjoy the tranquility of a beach when it’s not too crowded and I can just sit and chill and listen to the sounds of waves.

Honestamente no me gusta mucho la playa, porque no me gusta la arena ni nadar, pero me gusta la tranquilidad de una playa sin personas, donde puedo sentarme y escuchar a los sonidos de las olas.

正直に砂が嫌いのでビーチをあ好きじゃないです。でも、人が少ない時の静かな景色がとても好きです。例えば波の音を聞くとか、太陽の光を感じるとか好きです。

so, i finished my college course designed to prepare you for the jlpt n2. i didn't study for my final (a mock exam of the test, i think it mostly consisted of questions from the 2012 jlpt n2) and i got a 70% on vocab/grammar/reading and an 80% on listening (putting me well above the 50% minimum to pass the jlpt n2). so, i feel comfortable enough to begin preparing to take the n1 in japan this winter. does anyone have any recommended n1 resources? i have been using japanesetest4u for grammar points, but any and all suggestions for n1 study materials would be appreciated!!

first day in japan

My first day in Japan, I couldn’t order a train ticket to Shinjuku at Narita Airport.

I had been studying Japanese for a few years, and I had finally arrived in Japan to study abroad. I was nervous, and jetlagged, and tired. And when I ordered a ticket to Shinjuku from the counter at the airport, I thought my Japanese was at least passable. But the lady at the counter looked at me quizzically and then began speaking to me in English instead. I was really discouraged.

But during my time in Japan I spoke Japanese every day and slowly got better. I practiced every day. I worked hard. When I returned home to the US, I continued to study Japanese, both in school and on my own.

And today my Japanese is quite fluent (even though I say it about myself). I still practice every day, speaking it and listening to it and reading and writing it.

So if you’re just starting out, don’t be discouraged when you fumble. If you can’t make a sentence, practice making sentences. If you can’t read katakana, challenge yourself to look at loanwords. And if you talk to someone and they stare at you blankly and use English instead, don’t be upset. You’ve made the first step and the more you practice, the closer you will get to your goal.

徳川家康

織田信長、豊臣秀吉、徳川家康の三人を、三大英傑と呼ぶと以前紹介しましたが、今回は三人目の英傑、家康を紹介しましょう。

家康は徳川幕府あるいは江戸幕府と呼ばれる1603年から1867年まで約260年続いた武家政権の創始者です。この政権下では、天皇から征夷大将軍という位を与えられた者が実質的な権力を持って政治を執り行い、そしてそれは家康の子孫達に代々受け継がれました。征夷大将軍は江戸（現在の東京）に住んでいたため、当時の政治・文化の中心は江戸。

この時代を江戸時代と呼びます。

では、この徳川家康、どのような人物なのでしょうか。

家康は三河国（みかわのくに・現在の愛知県）の小領主の長男として生まれます。当時小領主達は有力な大名の助けを受けねば生き伸びていけないような状況。忠誠の証として、自分の息子を有力大名に差し出すことはよくありました。家康は幼少期を戦国大名の人質として暮らします。

その後、信長と同盟を結び、徐々に信頼を勝ち得ていった家康は大大名に成長します。信長の死後、秀吉の全国統一事業に協力をし、豊臣政権下では最有力大名になります。

やがて秀吉が亡くなり、大名同士の権力争いに関が原で勝利した家康が、江戸に幕府を開いたのは、62歳の時でした。当時の平均寿命が40歳から50歳であったことを考えると、長い長い道のりを歩んでようやくつかんだ成功であることがわかるでしょう。

「鳴かぬなら　鳴くまでまとう　ホトトギス」。この句は家康の人生・性格を表す句として知られています。「ホトトギス」の句は信長・秀吉のブログでも紹介しましたが、皆さんはどの句に一番共感を覚えますか。

 Iejasu Tokugawa

Před nějakým čase jsme si představili tři velikány, a to muže jménem Oda Nobunaga, Hidejoši Tojotomi a Iejasu Tokugawa. Dnes se zaměříme na jednoho z těchto hrdinů, Iejasu.

Iejasu byl zakladatel samurajské vlády zvané Tokugawswký šógunát, nebo také Edo bakufu, která trvala od roku 1603 do roku 1867 po 260 let. Pod touto vládou osoba, která zastávala pozici šóguna, měla nesmírnou moc a třímala v rukou otěže státu, a tuto pozici si potomci Iejasu předávali po generace. Šógun žil ve městě Edo (současné Tokio), které v té době bylo kulturním a politickým centrem. Tuto éru nazýváme érou Edo.

Avšak, co za člověka byl Iejasu Tokugawa?

Iejasu se narodil jako nejstarší syn nižšího lenního pána v Mikawanokuni (současná provincie Aiči). Nižší lenní pánové v té době potřebovali mít podporu vlivného daimjó, aby mohli žít dlouze a prosperovat. Jako důkaz své loajality, bylo časté, že posílali své syny k vlivnému lennímu pánovi. Iejasu strávil své útlé dětství jako rukojmí daimjóa v období Válčících Států.

Poté Iejasu uzavřel spojenectví s Nobunagou, postupně si získal důvěru a sám se stal dajmjó. Po smrti Nobunagy spolupracoval s Hidejošim na pokusu o sjednocení celé země, a pod vládou Tojotomiho se stal nejvlivnějším dajmjó.

Hidejoši však brzy skonal, a Iejasu, který zvítězil v mocenském sporu mezi lenními pány dajmjó, založil v Edu bakufu, Bylo mu tehdy 62 let. V té době byla očekávaná doba dožití mezi 40 až 50 lety, lze tedy považovat za úspěch tuto nesmírně dlouhou cestu, kterou zvládl urazit.

„Nakanunara nakumadematou hototogisu.“  Toto haiku považujeme za haiku vyjadřující Iejasův život a jeho povahu. Část „hototogisu“ jsme představili v článku o Nobunagovi a Hidejošim. A jaké haiku je vám nejbližší?

Who is your favorite character in 2? Phew... there're so many likeable characters. But the Donnie and Allision Hendrix aways had me grinning, so I'm gonna go with these two.

Who is your least favorite character in 1? Richard Pechtmann/Fritz, out of question.

What is your favorite episode of 4? Episode 18 "War of Words"; A language teacher getting worked about spelling mistakes in graffiti? Exactly my kind of comedy. // Episode 26 "Circle of Transmigration" Hands down, one of my favourite show endings despite, or actually because of the melancholic tone.

What is your favorite season of 5? Almost every season has constantly stellar writing, especiall Season 4 was my story-jam but Season 1 will always be my favourite since it drew me into the story in just two minutes and never ceased thrilling with a superb story telling and stellar acting.

Who is your favorite couple in 3? Shion Sonozaki and Keiichi Maebara, Rena x chill moments

What is your favorite season of 2? Season 2 (good build up to continue the story) and Season 5 (well done conclusion).

How long have you watched 1? Since a year whenever it was avaible on TV or in legal libraries.

How did you become interested in 3? It has been quiet popular or rumored about in the time I got into anime when I was around 12 years old. Admittedly, Higurashi had been a bit too much at the time. I rewatched it one year ago. Despite Studio Deen's usual lack of animation qualit, storytelling, characters, and pacing still hold up.

Who is your favorite actor in 4? Heh, there weren't really "actors" involved in the show but the general corporation between the staff of Studio Mangoble and Sinichrio Watanabe created a great show.

Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? I like all of them but so far Orphan Black holds up the torch high for Tatiana Maslany's superb, unmatched acting, a show ending at the right time, weavign all story threats together nicely and to statisfaction. Just perfect!

Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3 Babylon Berlin technically has more episodes than Higurashi (including the OVAs), but I rewatched Higurashi twice. :D

If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? The language teacher from ep. 18 which would impl my Japanese would be so good I could criticize grammar. xD (hastag langlr goals!)

Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? Possibly?? Ep22 in Samurai Champloo was so weird, the trio coming across Hinamimazawa during the Edo-period could make for a good horror episode.

Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? Greta an Stephan Jännicke. No, not joking they're both such sweet personalities and she wouldn't have Fritz around.

Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5? As much as I love Peaky Blinders I have to admit that Higurashi has dense characterwriting directly linked to a story, linking all storylines well together, perfectly shifitng tones from fun-comedic to mind-fucking psycho-horror.

Which has better theme music, 2 or 4? Samurai Champloo's development and style concept circulated around Rap and HipHop, the competition isn't even close.

I’m trying to translate my schools shirt into Japanese for my boyfriend, could you check my translations and see if they’re right (I can’t speak Japanese so I used translate and Wiktionary). 二千二十/にちにじゅう for 2020, 視覚/しかく for vision, 愛国者/あいこくしゃ for patriots (I needed plural but idk how 😭), 自由高等学校/じゆうこうとうがっこう for Liberty High school. If it’s too much then I’m okay to figure it out, but it never hurts

Hi anon, I’m sorry for the late reply, I haven’t logged in since a long time.

I’m afraid I may not be the right person to turn to for English-to-Japanese translations because my current level in Japanese isn’t high enough, but I know enough about translations in general to say that it greatly depends on contexts and the meanings you’re trying to convey. 

I’ll answer the best I can, but any help or corrections from my followers and mutuals will be much appreciated. 

When you say “for 2020″, “for vision” and “for patriots”, do you mean “for their sake”? If this is the case, the expression Noun + のために is often used in Japanese. 

As for “Liberty High school”, I think you simply need to write it in Katakana (instead of translating it in Japanese) because it is a foreign proper name.
