Today, I miss my past life brother so much, I was thinking of how scared I am to go to Japan because I’m scared to be judged. I’d be a tourist there, it made me so sad because I know I was living there once! As a happy family, with my beloved brother 😔

His personality is not final but I really do think he only acts like this around his 'arch nemesis' (one-sided).
Besides this, he is an ikemen with serious rizz.

Fantasy manga reccs for folks that liked Freiren, Dungeon Meshi, and Witch Hat Atelier
1. Is what you liked about DM dwarves promoting good lifestyle habits and giving exposition about monsters? You might like Soara and the House of Monsters! A girl raised to be a monster hunter meets a group of dwarves who build houses for monsters and stars traveling with them.
Tumblr media
2. Did you know Dungeon Meshi isn't Ryoko Kui's only series? The Dragon's School is on Top of the Mountian is a collection of oneshots all packed with the Ryoko Kui charm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Do you enjoy fun magic item crafting and a relationship between a long-lived elf and a human? you might like Elf to Shuryoushi no Item Koubou! Magritte is a magic item craftsman who, along with her assistant and bodyguard Yura, fulfills all sorts of requests for magic items.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Do you like when series really delve into the how and why of logistics? You might like The Dragon, the Hero, and the Courier! It follows the daily life and trouble of Yoshida the half-elf, a dedicated postal worker who delivers all sorts of strange and mundane letters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Did you know witch hat has a cooking manga spin off? now you do! Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen is extremely cute & domestic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Shinozaki-kun no Mente Jijou is a modern fantasy about an ordinary office worker finding out there's a lot about himself he never knew about - turns out his body has been modified to hold all sorts of magical machinery. The thing with machinery though - it needs maintenance
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro follows Kuro, a strange traveler who carries a coffin on her back, two shapeshifting twins she's adopted, and the talking bat who lives in her coffin as they wander the land looking for a certain witch. Whimsical & melancholy, this is one of my all time favs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. Akagami no Shirayukihime follows the life Shirayuki, a herbalist, and the people around her. It's kind of hard to sum it up with one thing because it's a pretty long series where a lot happens! It's got really lovely art, fun worldbuilding & extremely charming characters
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. Hakumei and Mikochi are two teeny women who live in a house nestled in the roots of a tree. Lots of them cooking, building, exploring and visiting friends in strange places. I really love the background designs and detailed art of objects! My fav chapters are the market visits. This one's another of my all time favs!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. Otherwordly Izakaya Nobu! More food in fantasy because you can never really get enough of that. A bar in modern japan inexplicably opens its front door into a fantasy city. Each chapter different people come to the bar to talk about their lives and enjoy japanese food.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
11. Radiant, a pretty classic fantasy shounen by a french artist - it's on this list primarily because I looooove the art, especially the backgrounds. It's got some fun magic item worldbuilding as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
12. And to finish off these reccs, Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina. This one's closest to Freiren in terms of who I think will like it. It's about a witch, her slow paced journey around the world, and the people she meets along the path.

Note
I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but a major (SPOILER) character in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn shapeshifts into a Japanese songbird, and that game also contains heron shifters. It's still got a lot of wolves/big cats/carnivorous dragons/ravens/hawks, but there's more than just "large charismatic carnivores" there, at least.
That's so cool!! It's unfortunate how rare it is, but nice that there are at least some examples :D

this shapeshifting vessel is a lie
it's been a year already since my last pinned, and I got shadowbanned exactly around that time back then because of course I did, so here's a new one 🩷
I'm Autumn, but you can call me Faon as well. my pronouns are they/ them. ticked all the boxes on the queer registration form, and I'm currently in a queerplatonic poly relationship. I was born in '95. central european & white. future linguistics student. proud plant parent. kpop fan. I really adore vampires and I write original and fan fiction, as well as poetry. I speak english and german, and I'm studying french, japanese, korean and finnish. lover of bats, snakes, horsies, deer and cats, as well as sharks. I sometimes make cat ear edits and vampire edits of idols and actors ( see: my icon ) so if you want me to make one for you, you can DM me.
my interests and hyperfixations change over time — yes, it was a phase, mum! name a constant state of being, mum! — and I change my username every two years, round about. currently I'm really into the quantum leap spin-off, live action one piece show, and I'm watching a couple of kdramas and such at the side. I play baldur's gate 3, vampyr and control, but also 2064: read only memories.
I was very active in the shadowhunters and the dragon age as well as the james bond / 00q fandoms, and I will reblog every single gif of spirit - stallion of the cimarron, it's my childhood movie. also, Jin Oshiro from STRAY (2019) deserved better, thank you. you may know me as leafmiilk, taehdenveri, fliederfuchs or thetevinterelf.
this blog of mine was created in 2012, I was on here already when you could still count on the superwholock people to throw gifs at posts although I was never one of them, which, trust me, was a hilarious feeling in hindsight asjfjahajft. I have one sideblog worthy of note @splittergheist which is my writing blog, and I have a secret sideblog for my omegaverse / miscecanis stuff ( much more the lifestyle, world building and concept than the smut and stuff, I'll be honest, but no hate at all!! ) that I might give out if someone asks nicely and privately.
that said, I tag my posts extensively, and if you ask politely, I will try and tag specific things for you too! please be nice in my inbox or I'll simply delete your ask and block you. 🦈 oftentimes I will message you privately when you've sent me an ask that doesn't seem to be an ask game or such! and while I do post stuff for tag games I'm not a fan of tagging others unless we're, like, really close, sorry ><
relevant kpop stuff can be found under the tag. I also put some "reviews" written by mutuals about my blog there, thank you everyone, you're lovely 💚🌼
and thank you everyone else for reading this, may your days be bright I think we all could need that at the moment. I would super love new people to talk to ( please have your age / some approximate of it in your bio; I'm totally fine with talking to minors but I would like to know I am before I do, thank u ) so message me or reply to this!

Shall I compare Autumn's blog to a summer's day? I shall not, because I am not a hack. Equal parts language jokes, kpop boys (and girls, but I don't look at those) and #bitter millennial blogging, there's something for everyone here at Autumn's blog. They are also one of the few people who still write funky things in the tags, a true dying breed on Tumblr. I feel like I'm reviewing a restaurant or something. Either way, click follow, thank me later, because you will. It's a good blog, Bront.

The Agency - Declassified Files
CLASSIFICATION: Supernatural SPECIES: Dragon (Imugi) COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Korea THREAT LEVEL: Moderate
Expand to continue reading.
ABOUT:
Though the word 'dragon' is a broad classification pertaining to several different species of Supernatural peoples, the Dragon (Imugi) originates from the Korean Peninsula. Having fallen through a portal from the Echo World some time in prehistoric East Asia, this species of supernatural is somewhat reclusive. Known to inhabit secluded locations in the mountains of Korea, spreading into China and Siberia, these Supernaturals quickly ascended to deity status amongst the young civilizations of Asia. Shapeshifters by nature, these Supernaturals are extraordinarily long-lived, with some estimated to be several thousand Earth-years old. These Supernaturals often prefer to inhabit a human form when interacting with the world around them. However, some that have retreated from the world are thought to have permanently shifted into their serpentine, draconic form.
APPEARANCE -> HUMAN FORM
In Korean mythos, dragons are depicted in one of four color schemes: red, blue, green, or gold. These color schemes mimic the color schemes of the different draconic bloodlines found worldwide, with each coloring tying the dragon to an element of nature which they have magical control over. Red -> Red dragons in human form will often have dark red hair and fiery orange, yellow, or red eyes. Red dragons are tied to the element of fire, and work well with other Supernaturals with fire-based Magic. In mythology, red dragons were symbols of war, and sometimes associated with the rising sun, particularly in Japanese mythos. Blue -> Blue dragons are often seen with black hair, though some may sport dark blue, turquoise, or even shades of blue-green hair along with blue eyes that come in a variety of shades. Blue dragons are tied to the element of water, and have aquatic abilities such as the ability to breathe underwater and control water telekinetically. In mythology, these dragons were associated with bodies of water, from rivers to the sea. Green -> Green dragons are generally seen with green hair in many different shades, though the most common seem to be a sort of blue-green or an evergreen shade. Their eyes will range from bright, vibrant jade to green that is so dark it is almost black. Green dragons are tied to the element of earth, and have been known to exhibit healing abilities, as well as control over rock and/or plant life. Some dragons of this classification also seem to be able to poison or knock out humans similar to the effect of a vampire's pheromones. Green dragons were often associated with the mountains of the Korean Peninsula. Gold -> Gold dragons are the rarest of the four, tied to the element of air. They often have very light colored hair, ranging from whites to blondes to grey. Their eyes are usually white, grey, yellow, or in some cases, a pink-ish hue which resembles the color of the sky at sunrise. These dragons were associated with the sky, the wind, and storms, as well as good luck and good omens. Their magic involves controlling the wind, and they are known to be particularly fast and agile. All dragons have slitted pupils like cats and sharp teeth when in human form, as well as large ears that come to a point at the uppermost tip. Their facial characteristics are always similar to that of humans in Eastern Asia unless they are half-blooded or less with human blood not of East Asian descent. All dragons can conceal these traits with magic, but many choose not to when in the company of other Supernaturals. Some dragons are observed to have facial markings similar to tattoos, and for some, these markings continue over the entire body. There are a few instances as well of dragons who have recently shifted into their dragon form to have scales that linger across their brow and cheekbones.
APPEARANCE -> DRAGON FORM
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Dragon (Imugi) subspecies of Dragon appear as large, serpentine reptiles very similar to the Chinese and Japanese subspecies of Dragon. However, distinctions can be made by counting the number of toes a dragon has -> the Imugi subspecies has four toes on each foot, while other subspecies often only have three. Imugi are also known to have great horns atop their heads in the shape of antlers, something that notably the Chinese subspecies tend to lack. The size of a dragon's nonhuman form can vary, ranging from 8 to 10 feet in length to upwards of over 60 feet, though those larger than 15 feet are rare and often extremely old.

I wad stuck in Totsuka and Megan and in what their world looks like, so i had a talk to my brother/cowriter and now I have some ideas to work with.
First of all, the races. I used to think that it would be a lot of hard work to make lots of different races in a world, but man, that's fun
There are five races (for now, might add one or two later depending on how it goes): The dragons (although its probablybetter to refer to them as 'dragonborns'), the humans, the fae, the vampires and the shapeshifters.
The vampires get energy/their life force from blood (obsviously). The humans, from their stomach (may change that). The fae, from their environment (like. mostly anywhere). I haven't decided yet for the shapeshifters, but then the dragonborns get their life force from the sun.
I wanted to have a logic behind all the races, and then we decided to make a mithology: we are gonna inpire it on our favorite pantheons (greco-roman, nordic and japanese). The Main Deity (like zeus/jupiter or odin or amaterasu) is gonna be the Sun Deity and they blessed the dragonborns maaaany many many millenia ago, so that's why their energy comes from the sun. We still have yet to dig deeper into that.
Then we have the magic system: It's pretty simple, actually. There are two kinds of magic:
Spiritual magic (nonsense, clairevoyance, mind reading, anormal phenomena)
And Material magic.
Now, material magic has two subtypes. Chemic and Physical. Physical magic is manipulating effects of physic, like explosion and making things move, and Chemic magic is manipulating chemical phenomena. Like... poisioning. Degradation. Human body functions. I don't know much about it but I thinm most of the things that happen in the world are under one of these two things. So I divided magic like that! Each race has (generally) an inclination to either or another (Material or Spiritual). The fae are more prone to have ease with Spiritual magic (at least it comes easier to them), the humans, Material, the Shapeshifters, Material, and the vampires, Spiritual. The dragonborns are blessed so they have a natural inclination to both equally.
And lastly, the main idea behind having a lot of races is that my brother loves shonen anime and One Piece and draws most of his ideas from there. He wanted to have a powerful and officially extinct race, and kne of the main characters (totsuka) is a direct descendant of them.
He wanted the race to be like, the sun people, and when I questioned him about how they would be like and suggested a lot of things (werewolves, clairvoyants, elves...) we reached the dragonborn idea. They're not proper dragons nor dragonborns, but it's where I'm drawing their inspiration from. Prob gonna chanhe in the future

If the Dragon Ball wiki isn't going to give me any Puar trivia, then *cracks knuckles* it's Excessively Long Headcanon Time
Tumblr media
First, between watching 3 different dubs of 3 different parts of the franchise recently that all referred to Puar as she/her (in Japanese apparently Puar has a female actor but uses a typically masculine "I" pronoun and is addressed with a typically masculine honorific—and has been declared male by Toriyama in an interview—so I dunno if the English translators just assumed gender based on voice or if Puar so rarely speaks about themself / is so rarely directly spoken to that the pronouns and honorific only came up after the translator had already declared them female)...I've been like "Puar as a boy is cute...but Puar as a girl is ALSO cute..." so I'm headcanoning them on the nonbinary spectrum to have the best of both worlds XD [I mean this affectionately and not transphobically, so please let me know if I should rephrase this]
Since all we get of Puar's backstory besides Transformation Kindergarten is "Puar hatched from an egg," headcanon that they grew up in the wild somewhere, separated from their birth parents and constantly fearing for their life because of all the local predators. One day Puar was rescued from danger by a former student of the Transformation Kindergarten who took a liking to Puar and decided to bring them there, so they could at least defend themself by shapeshifting into scary forms to frighten their enemies or into bug forms too tiny to be caught.
There, though, Puar was mercilessly bullied by Oolong, who made everyone's life hell until he was finally kicked out (his parents had sent him there thinking that "Transformation Kindergarten" was a finishing school that would fix his bad behavior). This treatment only increased Puar's resolve to master transformation and have a way to defend themself, and they graduated at the top of their class. They were tempted to live quietly in peace at the school and become an instructor, but wanted revenge against Oolong and went out into the world to find him (correctly assuming that Oolong would still be up to no good) and Bring Him To Justice.
Unfortunately, the world outside the secluded school was still dangerous and Puar's shapeshifting abilities weren't as helpful as they'd been promised. Pretty soon after leaving, they were captured by some anthro animal gangsters who for several weeks forced Puar at gunpoint to use their ability for the gangsters' benefit. Yamcha, who only saw a bunch of big guys kicking around a tiny sorta-cat child, swooped in and came to the rescue with a dashing grin and hair blowing dramatically in the wind, and for Puar it was love at first sight. They swore undying allegiance to Yamcha, who was initially like "Uh...that's a bit much," but agreed to take Puar in after realizing how useful Puar's shapeshifting would be for banditry. (Puar, to his dying day, will never realize the irony of being forced to shapeshift to commit crimes only to be rescued and then excitedly volunteer to shapeshift to commit crimes.)
When they go off to live at Capsule Corp, Puar has a strong affection for Bulma's parents and considers them parent-like (also having parental feelings for the teachers at Transformation Kindergarten), but has latched onto Yamcha so hard that they've mentally adopted Yamcha's (long-dead) parents as their own, and fantasizes so hard about what it would've been like to grow up with Yamcha that sometimes they'll mention a daydream memory in conversation and Yamcha's like "??? I didn't meet you 'til I was 14??" and Puar has to hastily come up with an excuse for what they said.
Again, Puar's been madly in love with Yamcha since the moment they met, but they're asexual and thought romantic love = desire for sex so they didn't understand that it was love until many years later when they not only learned about asexuality, but finally connected the concept to their own experience and specific feelings for Yamcha. (In the meantime, they'd been aggressively pushing for Yamcha and Bulma to get together and stay together, with the idea that that was what would make Yamcha happy and Puar would do ANYTHING to make Yamcha happy.) But the realization just made things worse because then they had to deal with the thoughts that Yamcha only ever dated human women and therefore probably wouldn't see Puar romantically and even if he did he'd probably want to Do Stuff that Puar might not be comfortable with and angst angst angst angst aaaangst. They couldn't talk to Bulma about it cus they didn't want to get between her and Yamcha, and was terrified of talking to Oolong about it since Oolong would surely make fun of them or tell Yamcha out of spite (Oolong having spent the previous years nonstop teasing Puar about having a crush on Yamcha, which was easier to take when Puar sincerely thought it wasn't true).
Eventually they do confide in Oolong, and Oolong DOES make fun of them at first ("You're in love with Yamcha? This is supposed to be NEWS??") and absolutely cannot comprehend the concept of asexuality, but backs off when it's clear that Puar is genuinely upset, partly cus Oolong also understands how hard it is to be obsessively in love with a human who's only attracted to other humanoids (Bulma). He still teases Puar sometimes, but also takes any opportunity to try to wingman Yamcha into dating Puar, to Puar's horror. (Fortunately Yamcha never picks up on the subtext and is just like "Well yeah, sure I'll take Puar to the movie if they want to go? I mean of course Puar's gonna come live with me, they're my little buddy?")
After recovering from the world-ending trauma of the Buu Saga, Puar finally confesses to Yamcha in an extremely shoujo "It's okay if you don't like me back, but I want you to know" way, and Yamcha's surprised and says "I don't like you that way" but is extremely cool with it, Puar is massively relieved, and they continue on as even closer friends.
ALSO: headcanon that the hardest part of learning to shapeshift is the actual act of shapeshifting, of imagining what you want to be in 3D and willing your molecules into that shape. The part that Oolong missed when he was kicked out of school was the ability to increase your endurance and improve your concentration, which is about increasing your body's stamina through exercise (since it's physically taxing to rearrange yourself into and maintain a foreign shape) and controlling your mental state through meditation (so you can calmly and easily maintain the form in the back of your mind while consciously focusing on other things, instead of having to concentrate hard on staying in your chosen shape). Oolong doesn't know about this, just that Puar can maintain a form longer and transform more times in a row than he can. He tried going back to school but had been blacklisted for life, and Puar refused to teach him, knowing he would probably use it for evil (at minimum, to get dates with girls who aren't into pigs).

BNHA 376 Japanese to English Translation w/ Commentary
Tumblr media
No.376 花に嵐 = No.376 Storm Over Blossoms
The chapter title is a reference to a Japanese proverb: tsuki ni muragumo, hana ni arashi (“clouds over the moon, storm over blossoms”). This idiom is a fatalistic insight that “life often brings misfortune at times of great happiness.” Misfortune often seems to loom behind even our happiest moments. When we feel the warmth of the sun, we can be assured of the coming of the rain.
I suspect that the chapter title is alluding to the inevitability of Enji and Touya’s meeting like this and it ending in tragedy (with Touya dying due to the damage he’d already sustained from his immolating on Sekoto Peak, self-destructive training for 6-7 years prior to the start of the series in preparation for their encounter, and his altercations with the Heroes over the past two wars). Fate and Rebirth are recurring themes in Enji and Touya’s stories. The manga includes several references to Fate tying Dabi to Enji and Enji to Dabi and compares Enji to a phoenix consumed by its own flame and born anew from the ashes and Touya/Dabi to the serpent or dragon (ryuutoudabi = dragon head, serpent tail) that devours its own tail, also called the ouroboros, an ancient symbol depicting eternity; immortality; duality (similar to the yin-yang symbol); the cyclical nature of life and death, creation and destruction; regeneration; and the world itself. The ouroboros represents the vastness and interconnectedness / interchangeability of the universe as expressed by the phrase “all is one, one is all, and all is me.” It is closely related to the alchemical concept of the philosopher’s stone, or Elixir of Life, a legendary deep red substance (at least in its matured form) fabled to transmute base metals into gold, cure diseases, and grant the one who possesses it eternal life and youth, liberating them from the limitations of the human body. Also related is the story of Jormungandr in Norse mythology who grew so large and powerful as to encircle the entirety of Midgard, i.e. Earth, and bite his own tail. This action is said to hold our world together. It is prophesied that Ragnorok, a cataclysmic event at the end of the world resulting in the destruction of Midgard, will be triggered by Jormungandr releasing his tail. The ouroboros may also be connected to the Milky Way, called the “serpent of light,” which is interesting when we consider Touya’s association with the stars, the kanji for his name translating to “arrow of light” or “light arrow,” and his portrayal as a serpent, which has negative connotations in the western hemisphere but positive connotations in the eastern hemisphere, where Japan is located. For the Japanese, owing to their ability to shed their skin, snakes are the ultimate embodiment of transformation, renewal, healing, and rebirth or regeneration. Like dragons, with whom they are strongly linked, snakes are often regarded as a good omen and revered as guardians and protectors. Historically, they have been worshipped as deities of creation. Snakes, especially white snakes, are associated with wisdom, intuitiveness, tenacity, rebirth or regeneration, transformation, new beginnings, enlightenment, fertility, good luck, prosperity, abundance, and material wealth. They are believed in some traditions to be the reincarnations of deceased relatives watching over their living family, deities taking physical shape in the human world, or shapeshifting messengers for the gods with the ability to pass easily between the six realms of existence, similar to foxes, or kitsune. Due to the adoption and/or blending of cultural elements brought on by the introduction of foreigners to Japan and China, attitudes toward snakes have become more varied. Whereas the intelligence and fluidity of the snake was praised and admired in the olden days, they are now sometimes viewed negatively as being of a cunning and “slippery” nature, which is certainly how Hawks describes Dabi. Personally, I think that's a case of the pot calling the kettle black, but I digress. Horikoshi once imagined Dabi as a snake, but Himiko looks like one, with her unusually large canine teeth and her Quirk, Transform, causing her “skin” to slough off like a snake's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This seems to me to be just another thing linking their characters. Looking at the 8-year anniversary color page, I noticed something strange on Himiko’s dress: two odd shapes resembling white snakes slithering across the back of her skirt on the side closest to Dabi. Why did Horikoshi include that detail? What, or who, do they symbolize? Why are they on Himiko's dress and not someone else's? Does it matter that they seem to be emerging out from behind her, seemingly undetected by anyone present, and crawling toward Dabi? His face and eyes are soft and relaxed, but his hand is tense. Why? Is it because they are surrounded by Heroes? If we assume one snake represents Himiko herself, should we assume the other represents Dabi? What might that tell us about their characters, their dynamic, or their relationship?

There is plenty that could be said about how Fate features in Enji and Dabi’s stories, but that is a conversation for another day. Just know that in all likelihood, the proverbial (and literal) storm rolling in will hit Enji, Touya, and Himiko particularly hard. Enji is committed to seeing Touya and showing up for him now like Touya needed him to when he was a child. Touya, ever himself, yearns to be seen by his father and assured that his life and death mattered, that he is not a failure, that he is not a mistake, that his father, even if no one else in his biological family, is glad he was born, that he was loved, that he will be remembered. He needs that absolution so that Touya Todoroki, the forgotten eldest child of Enji and Rei Todoroki who burned to death over the winter break from school days before his 14th birthday, can finally be laid to rest with his burial rites performed and find peace in letting go of his despair (and moving forward toward rebirth…). Touya has Enji’s attention. Enji is hoping that’ll make all the difference. From childhood, Touya was always so hopeful that if his dad would only just look at him again, then he would be relieved of the crushing anguish slowly killing him. Both of them will find that their characteristic stubbornness and resistance to change, two of several traits they share, has cost them everything. A decade earlier, Enji arrived too late to save Touya from burning to death on Sekoto Peak, and now, his self-victory arrives too late to save Touya from burning away a second time.

私まだあなたと恋バナしてない!

This is an audio flashback to Ochako’s final line to Himiko before passing through Kurogiri’s Warp Gate in No.375.
…しつこい...
= “... Persistent…”
That sound effect directly to Himiko's left, ドロ (romaji: doro), is the sound of the Transform fluid oozing off of her as she drops her disguise.

恋する乙女はもういないんだよ
= “The maiden / young woman who loves is no more, Hero.”
Himiko is saying that she is not that person Ochako “knew” her to be anymore (I write “knew” in quotation marks because No.375 clarifies that Himiko has been “playing the part” of a “lovestruck schoolgirl” so that she is not taken seriously and is able to draw close enough to her prey, specifically Izuku, to kill them; Himiko reeeeaaaallllyyyy hates guys who look like Izuku and Saito and violently attacks and stabs them to death when she finds them; compared to how nonchalantly she normally kills–by plunging a knife into a person's head or slashing their throat–her attack on Saito was unusually passionate and personal, with her knocking him down, pinning him beneath her, and repeatedly stabbing him while he helplessly held up his hands and arms in a desperate attempt to defend himself; I headcanon that Himiko's obsessive preoccupation with and aggression toward guys with Izuku and Saito's physical characteristics is actually driven by repressed rage toward her father; very Freudian, but it happens more often than you'd think; displacement is a common defense mechanism, although the pervasiveness and intensity of her anger speaks to a larger issue; here's looking at you, Papa Toga!).
Here, Himiko is reiterating her sentiment from No.341 and No.375 that “it is too late” for her to “turn back now.” Any chance the Heroes had of “reaching” her “died” when Hawks killed Jin and Ochako failed to listen to understand, not just respond (No.289). Horikoshi seems to confirm as much in No.375 by writing that these actions by the Heroes had “completed Himiko Toga as a Villain,” making the Heroes (in)directly responsible for the carnage they are now experiencing. It was not "one bad day" that produced Himiko and Touya's Miserable Parade. It was a series of bad days, a series of failures by Heroes to actually help the people who needed it most, a small, small accumulation, the butterfly effect. Villains like Tomura, Dabi, Toga, Twice, and Spinner don't just happen. They aren't born. They're made, one bad day at a time. Before Jin's murder and Ochako's dismissal, Himiko was still just a student in My Villain Academia. It was Heroes who laid the groundwork for her to graduate into a full-fledged Villain. It was Heroes who created the Villain Toga.

退く (romaji: shirizoka) is a verb meaning “to step back; to move back; to retreat; to withdraw (from the presence of a superior); to exit; to resign; to retire; to quit.” 皆 (romaji: minna) means “everyone.” 一旦 (romaji: ittan) means “once; briefly; temporarily; for a short time.” I translated ittan as “for the time being” because the Hero is yelling for everyone to draw back until something can be done about the clones and the flames, which could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, or it could never happen.

Thank you for making it your prerogative to protect Villains as well as Heroes. A real Hero doesn’t need a Villain to prove that they’re human and have feelings by crying or through psychic impressions of a despairing child or to perform their victimhood a particular way, i.e., “good victim” versus “bad victim,” before they are able to recognize their adversary as a human like themselves and extend sincere sympathy and compassion to them. They understand that difference is not cause for division and people are people, even when they do not think or behave in line with our values and beliefs. This guy is Lion Hero: Shishido, by the way. He’s the current No.13 Pro Hero.

Because Himiko’s clones appear to be clones of her Transformed into Twice, rather than genetic copies of Twice complete with his personality, mannerisms, and memories, each one should have the ability to create two additional clones using Twice’s Double as well as the ability to Transform into any person whose blood they ingest. Essentially, Toga is wearing Twice's face. She has not created a True Clone of her belated friend and “brother” and she may not ever. Jin’s greatest fear was that he was merely a clone and not really “himself,” not really “alive.” That Himiko has not used Double to create a copy of Jin speaks to the depth of her love and respect for him.
このままじゃ日本が埋めつくされる…止めなきゃ…!
= “At this rate, Japan will be buried… [We] have to stop [them]...!”
Literally, 埋める (romaji: umeru) means “to bury; to fill up (e.g., an audience fills up an arena or stadium); to cause to be packed; to fill (e.g., a seat, a vacant position)” and so on.
だが荼毘の熱が強すぎるぞ…!
= “But Dabi’s heat is too intense…!”
ぞ (romaji: zo) is a masculine (basically, “tough guy” talk) particle that can be used at the end of a sentence to express strong intent, persuade someone to go along with your action, or (directed at yourself) assert your judgment or resolution. It adds force to an assertion and can indicate a command. Tokoyami is expressing his strong opposition to assisting any further in the war effort.

最早戦いにならない…!
= “[We] must not fight anymore…!”
最早 (romaji: mohaya) means “now; already; no longer; anymore.” 戦い (romaji: tatakai) means “battle; war; fight; conflict.” There’s a subtle difference between いけない (romaji: ikenai) and ならない (romaji: naranai) that is a matter of nuance (should not versus must not). Ikenai implies that the action you should not do is something you are not doing voluntarily; in other words, you think you should not do it and think you have no choice but to not do it (e.g., you think it would be bad for you to stay up late studying the night before a big test, so you decide to sleep and wake up early to study instead). Ikenai is also used when you are telling someone else they should not do something. Naranai implies that the action you must not do is something you are not doing involuntarily; in other words, someone, such as an authority figure, forbade you from doing something (you feel obligated not to do something because of someone else) or to do something would rather be a burden to you (you feel obligated or compelled not to do something because of situational circumstances). Ikenai implies that the speaker feels an obligation not to do something due to internal factors (e.g., self judgment, not wanting to do it). Naranai implies that the speaker feels an obligation not to do something due to external factors (e.g., not wanting to disappoint or anger someone by doing it, societal judgment, or situational variables discouraging them from doing it). Some people summarize the difference as ikenai = “it’s bad if I do this, so I shouldn’t do it,” whereas naranai = “doing this is bad, so I must not do it.”
Tokoyami’s use of naranai over ikenai suggests that his aversion to fighting in the war is fueled by external considerations. It could be that Hawks specifically advised him during the planning for the war to withdraw from the battle if it took a turn for the worst (if so, I’m mad), but it could also be that Tokoyami believes that the situation has developed well beyond his and his classmates’ capabilities (he’s not wrong) and they should prioritize their own lives and safety, even to the detriment of others’ lives and safety, in which case Tokoyami should transfer to a regular high school as soon as possible and aim for an office job removed from any responsibility for protecting people or saving lives because that abandon-ship, me-before-you attitude is the antithesis to heroism. There’s a difference between self-sacrifice and playing fast and loose with your life, but there’s also a difference between someone with a hero’s spirit and someone only pretending to have it. Have you ever seen a person who sees a dangerous situation unfolding and charges into it to help others? They have the heart of a hero. It’s not a thought that crosses your mind. Your body just moves. You’re running down the street to your neighbor’s burning house before you’ve even had time to process what is happening. All you know is someone might need help. That’s all you can think about. Izuku is like that. Tokoyami is not.
The reason I’d be mad if Hawks told Tokoyami to flee is because it would be another case of Heroes attributing greater value to some lives than to other lives based on perceived usefulness or personal feelings and preferences. Katsuki didn’t have that option. Izuku doesn’t have that option. Monoma doesn’t have that option. Mirio, Nejire, and Tamaki don’t have that option. Komori (Quirk: Mushroom) doesn’t have that option. But because Hawks personally cares about Tokoyami, he is free to opt out of the war and his duties as a Hero? He can choose to walk away? That’s bullshit. Tokoyami wants to be a Hero? This is being a Hero. Either he’s fit to be one or he’s not, but he has no right to an out no one else has the privilege of having.
分断作戦は敗れた…‼︎
= “Operation Division was defeated…!!”
……!
The ellipses make this a soft intake of breath. Enji is not gasping loudly and dramatically.
あの胸の炎は...焦凍が話していた。“燐”か!?
= That flame on his chest… Shouto was talking about it. ‘Phosphor’!?
So, just like when Enji repeated Touya’s “the past never forgets” line, he was listening to Shouto. He does hear his sons when they speak.
焦凍はどうした... っ燈矢
= “What happened to Shouto… T-Touya…?”
Take a look at that っ before 燈矢, or “Touya.” There are two tsu characters in Japanese, the regular つ and the smaller っ. Unlike other kana, っ does not represent a syllable sound. Instead, it represents a ‘clogged sound’ or a ‘geminate consonant,’ also called a ‘double consonant.’ At the end of a word or sentence, っ indicates a glottal stop, a sharp break in pronunciation that results from the closing of the vocal tract, specifically the glottis. If you were speaking and your glottis closed, your voice would suddenly cut off and you would be forced to swallow before you could continue. Someone might describe you as having gotten “choked up” on the subject matter. What about when っ is at the beginning of a word or sentence? When っ appears before a kana in a word, it forms a double consonant. Some double consonants are pronounced with a glottal stop at the start, but not all are. In fact, most words do not start with っ. When っ is added to the beginning of a word that it does not normally form a part of, like is the case here, it causes the sound of the consonant to be repeated (t —> tt) with a brief pause between the pronunciation of the doubled consonant. In English, some examples of words with similar spacing are midday (miD-Day), misspell (miS-Spell), bookkeeper (booK-Keeper), evenness (eveN-Ness), or lamppost (lamP-Post). That’s kind of how Enji said Touya’s name, like T-Touya. In Japanese, the addition of っ to the beginning of a word that does not usually include it can be suggestive of strong, inhibited emotion, such as shock or anger. It can produce an effect similar to exclamation and contribute a sense of urgency or pithiness to speech. I imagine that Enji’s body has grown tense, that he’s squeezing his fists so tight his fingernails are digging into his palms, that he is gnashing his teeth to the point of tasting blood, and that he is so upset (looks like anger, but it’s actually fear of the answer) that his tongue clicked hard as he spoke Touya’s name, converting that t into a tt.
…土産にしたかったけど………強かった...
= “... I had wanted to bring him [to you] as an unwelcome gift, but……… [he] was strong / tough…”
土産 (romaji: miyage) means “local specialty or souvenir bought as a gift while traveling; present brought by a visitor; something unpleasant that one is given (e.g., an illness while on vacation); unwelcome gift; disservice; souvenir.” Had Touya been successful, Shouto’s corpse would not have been something he purchased while traveling. It could be considered a “present” brought by a visitor (Touya), but I think Enji would agree that Shouto’s corpse would not have been a welcome “gift,” so that is the definition I chose for my translation. (Touya never actually said the word “corpse.” That word does not appear in this sentence, but it can be inferred because it is undeniable at this point that he had planned to kill Shouto and deliver his corpse to Enji).
強かった (romaji: tsuyokatta) is the ta-form (past tense) of 強い (romaji: tsuyoi), which has several potential meanings. It can, of course, mean “strong; potent; domineering; tough; powerful,” but it can also mean “being able to handle; know how to deal (with); durable (against); resistant (to); resilient,” with the example being fibrous material that will withstand lots of washings without losing its shape or color.
Shouto was strong, but that wasn’t the problem. Touya’s flames should have been enough to overpower him and would have been, but beyond mere strength, Shouto had developed a technique (Phosphor) that allowed him to negate the heat of Touya’s flames and defend against his attacks, which shocked and angered Touya, who had devoted his entire life (all 21 years, after subtracting the 3 years he had spent in a coma) to increasing his firepower to an unbearable, unrivaled degree. “But……… [he] was strong / tough…” is Touya’s way of saying, “I thought I had done enough to show you I’m strong too, I’m not a failure, I can compete with Shouto, I can even beat him now, but… it wasn’t enough…” Notice how Touya is speaking, all of his pausing and trailing off. He’s anxious. He’s embarrassed. He’s ashamed to be standing before his father with nothing to show for all his efforts to impress him. His confidence is shot. He’s not feeling competent and capable. He’s feeling small and weak and insignificant and stupid and worthless. He’s this kid,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ripping his hair out of his head by the root, imploring his father to please just give him a chance to prove he’s good enough to be acknowledged, wanted, and loved like Shouto is.
……俺の夢はもう…完には叶わない
= “...... My dream already… won’t be perfectly realized.”
完全 (romaji: kanzen) is an adverb meaning “completely; absolutely; entirely; perfectly.” It can also be used as an adjective (“complete; perfect”) or a noun (“completeness; perfection”).
Perfection has been a recurring motif in Touya’s story, with Shouto held up as the “perfect masterpiece” juxtaposed with Touya only ever being “almost perfect.” (This damning comparison is reproduced by other family members, namely Rei but also Shouto ((typical golden child / scapegoat, or “black sheep,” dynamic)), in the form of “family hero, good victim” Shouto contrasted with “family villain, bad victim” Touya. Additionally, Natsuo states in No.302 that he should have struck Enji and confronted Touya himself, attributing blame for the family dysfunction as much to Touya, another child and person Natuso names as one of three people abused by Enji, the other two being Rei and Shouto, as to Enji. Shouto is viewed by Rei, Natsuo, and Fuyumi, as well as by outsiders looking in, as a victim and good person, someone deserving of patience, kindness, protection, praise, and admiration; Touya, by contrast, is viewed by these same people as a bad person and problem to be solved, an issue to be “dealt with” so everyone can resume their peaceful lives without the complications attached to his being alive and exposing the hellish truths of their family that they would prefer had been kept secret.) Touya being Touya, it is my opinion that he has perfection in mind when he says kanzen. Like Enji’s dream of surpassing All Might and being saved from his “bitterness, jealousy / envy, and ugly heart” could not be perfectly fulfilled due first to his own and then to Touya’s physical limitations, Touya’s own dream can also not be perfectly fulfilled due to his physical limitations. He has, in a sense, fallen short of expectations again. Dragon head, serpent tail: a strong, promising beginning and a weak, anticlimactic ending: 竜頭蛇尾 (romaji: ryuutoudabi).
だからせめて...おまえの大切なもの...守ろうとするもの… 一つでも多く...!
= “That’s why even just… someone precious / valuable to you… someone you are trying to protect… as much as one [person]…!”
Let’s break these sentences down word by word. だから (romaji: dakara) means “so; therefore; accordingly; consequently; on those grounds; that’s why; for that reason; because.” Dakara can also be used to emphasize a point or as an expression meaning “like I said; I told you already.” せめて (romaji: semete) means “at least; at most; (even) just.” おまえ (romaji: omae) is an informal second person pronoun meaning “you.” Men are more likely to use it than women are because of its roughness and association with masculinity. It is never polite or respectful and becomes condescending when it is used by a social superior, such as a supervisor, to address a social inferior, such as an employee. It is very rude, offensive, and even aggressive for a person of lower social status, such as a child, to use it to address a person of higher social status, such as a parent. The way Touya is speaking to Enji would be unthinkable and highly objectionable by Japanese standards, regardless of the kind of father Enji was. の is a possessive marker. In this context, 大切 (romaji: taisetsu) means “precious; valuable; dear; cherished; beloved.” な (romaji: na) adds emphasis to taisetsu.
Jealousy and anger are secondary emotions. Lurking beneath jealousy, hoping to be recognized, is a feeling that one has been or will be forgotten. Lurking beneath anger, more often than not, is hurt over feeling slighted in some way. Touya is both jealous and angry, because he has felt forgotten and slighted both as a child and as an adult. When Touya emphasizes the word “precious / valuable,” it is because that is what he felt he wasn’t. He felt worthless and unlovable as a child, and he still feels worthless and unlovable as an adult. If anything, he feels worse now than he did then, and he felt bad enough then to be passively suicidal at 3-4 years old. Every action Touya has taken over the past two decades has been dictated by that core wound and has been a misguided attempt to relieve himself of suffering, suffering his parents did nothing to help him with, forcing him to take the initiative to (try to) help himself. Touya was a victim, still is a victim, and was robbed of the chance to be a child, grow up, make friends, and make good on his dreams. This is him trying, trying to do for himself what no one did for him: stand up for the child that he was, the bright-eyed redhead with the big popsicle grin and star-patterned blanket, the one who had the world at his fingertips and believed he could do the impossible if he only worked hard enough to make it possible because his dad had believed in him first and had modeled that perseverance (albeit not healthily; lesson = good, method = bad). That’s how children are. They hang onto their parents’ every word, learn by their example, and internalize the messages they receive about themselves. Touya cites Enji as encouraging him to persevere when he was a child [because results are only achieved through hard work and dedication], and it is that lesson and his father’s [original] belief in his ability to achieve the impossible that Touya has continued to lean on for support when he is feeling discouraged (No.350).
もの (romaji: mono) means “thing; person; something; someone.” Used as a conjunction (“because”) or as a sentence-final particle, it can indicate an explanation or excuse for something. It can also be used to assert something (e.g., “I’m not jealous! Hmph!”) and often carries feelings of dissatisfaction, disappointment, or disheartenment. It does not always but definitely can sound whiny and childish, like a pouting child seeking comfort or validation. もん (romaji: mon) is an alternative form of もの.
守ろ (romaji: mamoro) is a verb meaning “to protect; to guard; to defend.” う (romaji: u) is an auxiliary verb that expresses one’s will to do something and combines with とする (romaji: to suru) to mean “to try to do; to attempt to do” or “to be about to do; to be on the verge of doing.” We’ve already discussed もの (romaji: mono).
Finally, 一つ (romaji: hitotsu) means “one.” も (romaji: mo) is a particle with a world of uses and definitions. Here, combined with 多く, it means “as much as” or “as many as.”
多く (romaji: ouku) means “many; much; plenty; a lot; majority (of); greater part (of); mostly; mainly; chiefly; usually; often.” Touya does not say anything about at least one person Enji cares about “surviving.” That word does not make an appearance anywhere in any of these sentences. Such a statement wouldn’t even make sense because Touya has failed to kill anyone who actually matters. Every attempt Touya has made to become a full-fledged Villain by killing a plot-significant character has been sabotaged by Horikoshi himself, who obviously does not want us to regard him as such. Touya is a mess of a person, but long before he was Dabi of the League of Villains, he was Touya Todoroki, a victim of Hero society and a forgotten and abused child who died as a result of his parents’ negligence. That matters, and it is that fact that Horikoshi emphasizes time and again.
This is an aside, but that last image of Touya’s eye reminded me of a similar image from No.350. Here’s a side by side comparison:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In both panels, Touya’s eye is highlighted and AFO is present, belittling him in some way.
フフ...
This is a sound effect for laughter. AFO is chuckling to himself listening to Touya and Enji’s exchange. Illustrations tell a story in and of themselves, and Horikoshi is a masterful storyteller in that respect. Touya alone is spotlighted and burning away in AFO’s field of view. AFO is laughing at him. There is a loneliness to Touya and a desperation in his eyes. He is being devoured by his flames, hovering high above the confusion of the Miserable Parade. His speech is riddled with long pauses. His confidence plummeted the moment he saw Enji and Enji asked about Shouto—Shouto, the “masterpiece” born to replace Touya that he had spent at least the past eight years dreaming of killing and tossing at his father’s feet, a clear message: “See, Dad? You were wrong about me. You should’ve listened when I said ‘Shouto might have some competition after all.’ He sure had some competition all right! Your ‘failure’ crushed your ‘perfect.’ Who’s the failure, Dad? This has surely made you grow to recognize me too, right? You’re looking at me, aren’t you?”

風は僕に吹いている
= “The winds are blowing in [my direction].”
い is a particle with many uses and meanings. Here, it means “to (direction, state); toward; into.” Have you ever heard the phrase “wind at your back” or “wind in your sail”? Sailors know that to have the wind at your back filling your sails is a blessing because it makes for a quicker, easier, and safer voyage, with the wind working with you to push you forward rather than against you to beat you back, obstructing your path to your desired destination. When circumstances are favorable and the stars seem to be aligning for your benefit, the winds can be said to be going your way.

= “Kurogiri’s main body probably went to Tomura’s side… It would have been best (read as: easier) if I had gotten my hands on that warp (read as: Quirk) with a much longer effective range than my faulty mud warp…”
In this context, 下 (romaji: shita) means “(someone’s) side; (someone’s) location.” 本体 (romaji: hontai) means “main part, unit, or body (of a machine).” What AFO is getting at, I’m not sure. Is Kurogiri one of many? Is AFO thinking that Himiko will have created clones of Kurogiri? What is the thought process here? I’m genuinely at a loss. This line at least clarifies for us how AFO sees Kurogiri and maybe Noumu in general: as machines or appliances, non-sentient objects for him to use and discard like he shamelessly admits to using and discarding sentient life. What a contrast from Dr. Ujiko, who seems to have had genuine affection for his “creatures” (I’m drawing a comparison between Ujiko and his Noumu and Mary Shelley’s Dr. Frankenstein and his “Creature”).

AFO is mocking the Twice clone (actually a Himiko clone, apparently) who shouted Hawks’ name at the end of No.375. He’s having a blast laughing at Touya and Himiko’s expense.
……巻き戻しの都合とは言え随分な急ぎようっスね
= “...... Although your rewinding is convenient, let’s speed things up considerably, okay?”
This is the literal translation of Hawks’ line. I read it as “although your rewinding sure is convenient [for us], let’s not waste any time on getting to the end result (i.e., you disappearing)!”
死柄木を信用してないんスか? 完成体をしんようしてないんスか?
“You don’t trust / have faith in that completed body (read as: Shigaraki), do you?”
The furigana read “completed body” (完成体), but the kanji read “Shigaraki” (死柄木), so Hawks says “completed body” but means “Shigaraki.”
察しがいいね
= “Good guess.”
そうさ…あれはまだ真の意味で完成していない
= “That’s right… That is not yet completed in the truest sense.”
Note that AFO is referring to Tomura as if he were an object, not a person. Even if we plug in the word “body” after “that,” Tomura’s personhood is being ignored. The way AFO speaks about Tomura indicates that he views him as more of a thing than a person.

エンデヴァー さん!!

もう分断作戦はとっくに機能しなくなった!

このままじゃ熱で皆が戦えない! ここが全滅すれば全てがデクと死柄木に向かう!
= “As it is, everyone can’t fight with this heat! If this place / team is annihilated, everything will go to Deku and Shigaraki!”
Because ここ is written in hiragana, we can’t be sure if it corresponds to 個々, meaning “each one; everyone; every one,” or 此所, meaning “here; this place.” So, ここ (romaji: koko) has two potential meanings: “this place, area, or part (near the speaker)” or “this organization or team (near the speaker).” I included both as alternates in my translation. Personally, I think “this team” makes more sense than “this place” does.
燈矢を止めて下さい!
= “Please stop Touya!”
The kanji for Touya’s name can be translated as “light” and “arrow.” The word Hawks uses (止める) means “stop,” but it can also mean “turn off,” which is kind of interesting to think about. Imagine Touya as a lamp or overhead light. Hawks is asking Endeavor to cut it off, plunging the world into darkness.
下さい (romaji: kudasai) is honorific or respectful language (= sonkeigo) and is used when politely making a request of someone. It is the English equivalent of “please (give me)” or “please (do for me).”
ひどいな...! 片腕を失い意識欄の男に! それに君が言ってたじゃないか 「僕を速やかに倒す事」が彼の使命だと...職務放棄まで
= “Heartless…! [To ask that] of a man who lost his arm and whose consciousness is hazy! Moreover, weren’t you saying ‘my speedy defeat’ is his mission / obligation…? [To ask him] to abandon even his professional duties…!”
By “hazy consciousness,” AFO means that Endeavor is already on the brink of collapse and struggling to remain conscious. He could pass out at any moment from blood loss, probable internal hemorrhaging, and overexertion, and is only still standing by sheer force of will.
ぐちゃぐちゃうるせえな
= “You just don’t know when to shut up!”
That translation was borrowed from fan translator Blackmuffin on https://ww1.bokunohero.online/manga/boku-no-hero-academia-chapter-376/, but I think it does a good job of capturing the sentiment being expressed (and the marked difference between how Hawks speaks to Villains versus how he speaks to Heroes). ぐちゃぐちゃ (romaji: guchagucha) is an onomatopoeia for the gross, soppy, pulpy squish sound a pumpkin might make when it is soft and rotten and dropped on the ground. Piggybacking off of the feeling of disgust and disdain that image inspires, guchagucha can be used to describe something as “sloppy; messy; untidy.” うるせえ (romaji: urusee) is an informal alternative form of うるさい (romaji: urusai) and can be used as an adjective meaning “annoying (causing irritation); noisy” or as an idiomatic interjection similar to the English command “shut up! / stop it! / be quiet!” For all his internalizing and false presentations, Hawks can’t hide his annoyance with AFO’s pestering. He’s losing his cool. His jaunty, carefree “Hawks” mask is slipping, and “Keigo” isn’t quite so agreeable and good-humored.
Tumblr media
おまえはもう俺たちのNo.1に一度負けただろが! おれたちのエンデヴァーにいちど まけただろが!
= “You already lost to our Endeavor (read as: No.1) once, didn’t you?”
The smaller text reads:
だから放棄じゃなか!
= “So it’s not abandonment!”
屁理屈を
= “Splitting hairs.”
Literally, 屁理屈 (romaji: herikutsu) means “fart logic,” as in Hawks is blowing hot air and making an equivocal, nonsensical argument. Some common translations are “sophistic logic; chop logic; far-fetched argument; quibble; cavil; argument for argument’s sake.”
使命……今度は俺が見る
= “[My] mission / obligation…… This time I will watch / look after [you].”
父に課されたのは…
= [That which was] imposed on / assigned to the father…
End.
In light of No.376’s ending, now would be a good time to revisit my Twitter thread for No.357.
357 On Why Endeavor Must Defeat AFO, Protecting the Kids’ Futures, and His Intentions for Touya: https://twitter.com/hebatuallahahm1/status/1540459330423619586?s=21&t=MyqU1Sn5NgzqCcrWFy7smQ
In No.300 Enji lamented his firstborn son becoming a mass murderer. In spite of the threat Touya poses to Japan and the Heroes’ conviction to take “Dabi” down by any means necessary, Enji was adamant that he would not fight his son. He is the only Todoroki who ever expressed opposition to the idea of responding to Touya/Dabi with violence. The others were either in support (Rei, Natsuo, Shouto) or gave no comment (Fuyumi). Of everything Enji could have been thinking as No.376 came to a close, his only thought was “I will watch / look after [you].” AFO and Hawks are arguing about Endeavor’s duty, neither one realizing that Endeavor defined his duty for himself in No.357 when he identified his personal motivations for fighting in the war as (1) cleaning up the messes of past generations to clear the way for the younger generations, (2) protecting the future for the generations after him, and (3) continuously seeing / watching over / looking after Touya from here on. Even now, with Hawks calling on him to “please stop Touya,” Enji is thinking only of “seeing” him. Endeavor is a Hero, but Enji is a father resolved to atone for the crimes he perpetrated against his family in the ways most meaningful to them. For Natsuo, that meant removing himself from his life completely, i.e., no contact. For Shouto, it meant becoming a stepping stone for him on his path to becoming the Hero he had always wanted to be. For Fuyumi, it meant apologizing for everything and extricating himself from her so that she is able to have the “normal, happy” family she had always dreamed of and strived to create with her mother and two of her brothers. For Rei, it meant symbolically sending her a message in the form of a rindou that he hadn’t forgotten her or their family, paying for her psychiatric treatment and inpatient care for a decade, and purchasing a plot of land in the city chosen for its proximity to the kids’ commutes (Fuyumi, Natsuo, Shouto) to have a house constructed for her and three of their children, including the child possessing the Quirk he had destroyed his family to produce, to live in, a chance for the three kids and their mother at happiness and ease without the tension introduced by Enji’s presence disrupting their lives or their recovery. Touya is different. Touya has been consistent about what he needs for his healing, and it is to be seen, acknowledged, and cared for by his father like he was during the first 3 years of his life. Touya is not Natsuo or Shouto or even Fuyumi. He does not need or desire distance like Natsuo and Shouto do. He needs and desires closeness, a restoration of the bond he and his father had shared when he was very young. And unlike Fuyumi, for Touya, to lose Enji is to lose everything. There can be no family without Enji in it. There was no family without Enji, because for Touya, his family is Enji. The two are one and the same. Touya needs his father to look at him and say, “Even so, even if you became a Villain, I’m glad I made you. You were never a failure. You were never a mistake. I’m sorry for ever making you feel that way.” And this time, Enji is confident it’ll be different, and I’m inclined to believe him because as of No.357, he is different. This isn’t the same Enji who married Rei for the express purpose of producing a child with a hybrid fire and ice Quirk to surpass All Might or who terrorized his family for years. This is an Enji who is taking accountability for his mistakes and their origins and doing the work to introspect and conquer his own demons, instead of projecting them off onto a child to slay for him. And although I’m confident Touya is going to die (for now), I’m also looking forward to seeing father and son’s interaction. Touya said, “Look at me, look at me.” I’m looking. Enji said, “Watch me.” I’m watching. “Hero must die.” Father must prevail. I have my box of tissues ready.

Yokai!Twilight
Yup, our ranch hand is gonna be a yokai. Yokai are Japanese mythological creatures that ranging from spirits, dragons to even a few gods. Twilight is gonna be a split between two types: shapeshifting obake and two faced specter Ryomen Sukuna.
Natural born Yokai who wanders about either as a wolf or human. Twilight's true form stands around 3 meters and his second face looks like his wolf's form. Upper back and slightly wolflike upper arms are covered in thick fur that it's often mistaken for a pelt. Has a wolf tail on his lower spine and only one pair of legs in humanoid form but three in wolf form.
Twilight was about four years old when he meets Rusl and Uli. The boy was actually consider a cryptid to the village called the 'Beast' as no one really saw him up close. Just his inhuman shadow. Uli found Twilight trapped under a tree and manage to convince Rusl to help free him.
He quickly left in the middle of the night after recovering from the incident. Although Twilight chose to secretly watch the two over the years. Getting rid of any threats like bandits or monsters that would dare cause the two humans harm.
Twilight's finally taken in by Rusl and Uli around eight years old. A clan of bandits had recently been causing trouble on the path to Castle Town, something the married couple unluckily gets caught in. Twilight makes his appearance and subdues their attackers.
He didn't want to brutally kill said scum in front of Rusl and Uli. They intrigued Twilight and making them fear him wouldn't help. Once again, Uli was the one to reach out to the young Yokai.
It took awhile before Twilight felt comfortable enough to interact with the villagers. He prefer lazing about out of reach if he wasn't doing chores whether in either disguise or true form. Ilia's tenacity to befriend Twilight helped get him outta his shell.
It's an equal 50/50 when it comes to his two goat herding methods. Riding Epona in human form or intimidate/wrestle the more bull-headed members in his true form. (Just like FD, Twilight is too big to ride a horse unless it's the giant one from that BotW quest.)
Ladder, he's a living ladder to the villagers (and a personal jungle gym for the kids.) Twilight doesn't really mind though cause he can at least catch someone before they fall. Just a big gentle giant compared to his younger years.
Only some groups not from Ordon know about Twilight's true form which includes the Zora, Resistance, Gorons, Oocoo, Bulbins, Great Fairies and Spirits. First exposure to the Twilight made him ill than force his wolf transformation. Still took Midna's help to get out as his magic won't work properly (until he acquired the Dark Crystal).
Sass, he gave his new imp companion plenty of sass whenever prompted. Twilight isn't gonna take shit from anyone especially considering his Yokai nature. Might've snatched a mirror shard before Midna cut the connection between both worlds.
When the Chain arrives, he's more upfront about his inhuman nature as Twilight didn't want to join. Had enough goddess given quests and hopefully his true form is enough to further drive the point home. Why would Hylia need "an abomination's help"?
Twilight would definitely had stayed in Ordon Village cooing over his new baby sister more for two reasons. If Dink didn't decide to stir trouble with a troop of monsters and Time didn't give off that same air Uli did all those years ago.
Like with the villagers, it takes awhile before Twilight fully interacts with the Chain. Wind and Time chipped away at his closed off demeanor the most. Kids even young preteens like Wind are something Twilight has problems saying no to.
Wild was the last push needed to have him fully open up. Twilight's nature picked up the Champion's lingering scent of death and it didn't take long to piece together the events in his Hyrule. Wild was a newborn Yokai in his eyes, fellow kin just like him.
The other Links definitely used his large size to either get to unreachable places or in Wild, Wind, Four and Hyrule's case a perch. (Mostly Four cause someone keeps calling him short.) Also wrestles any companion that don't properly take care of themselves as blanket (and scarf) burritos are in their futures.

Their Yokai: Brothers
Tumblr media
It’s hard to say with him. The blue fiery spirits often indicate death so he could be a Shikigami given the skeletal hands and skeleton dragon behind him. He could also just be a version of dragon.
Tumblr media
Very obviously a tengu. Potentially a daitengu (just a higher ranking)
Tumblr media
He’s either a Ningyo, or one of the many sea monster Yokai of Japan
Tumblr media
He could be a Bakeneko or Nekomata, either way it’s a cat related Yokai
Tumblr media
This is another tricky one. There are a lot of yokai based on deceased scorned women and brides.
He could be a Jorōgumo which appears as a beautiful woman/newlywed but is actually a spider. That’s just one theory though.
Tumblr media
A shapeshifting Tanuki
Tumblr media
He could be a few things (such as a sickle weasel or Okami) but in Japanese folklore foxes and tanuki shapeshift most and given that Beelzebub is a Tanuki and his twin I think it’s more reasonable to say he’s a shapeshifting fox yokai

can you share about your shibusawa kids :D
yes!!!
(sorry this took so long to get out, my computer broke so its slow typing big text posts on mobile so please forgive any typos)
they're still in development at the moment as i try to build my nextgen but heres something of an overview of them so far to give you a bit of a general idea :]
some background: i like to ship shibusawa in a monstercule (monster polycule) of him, bram, lovecraft, adam, and sigma so the four kids i talk about here have additional siblings from those as well
they also each have some reptile i equate them within my mind that i use to characterize them
Tatsumi Shibusawa-Lovecraft
Tatsumi is th oldest of the family, and has the least conventional origin in comparison to not only his siblings but all my fankids (yes, even chimeraverse, even if those aren't actually technically shipkids).
He's technically closer to a singularity than anything else, first appearing as an egg shaped bundle of excess energy in the aftermath of Dead Apple. He wasn't really concious or anything during this, just a bunch of barely contained highly unstable energy swirling around. The egg was initially gathered by the ADA but was turned over to the Special Division for Unusual Powers so it could be more safely stored and observed. I don't want to spoil the entire story since I plan on writing/drawing it, so to cut to the end, the energy stored in the "egg" wasn't stable enough to actually form a living body and Shibusawa couldn't provide any more than what he already had. It required contact with another extreme source of energy, which ended up being the cosmic power Lovecraft is constantly using to maintain a human form himself. (I will say there were a couple other circumstances that could've provided Tatsumi with his stabalized human form, Lovecraft was just the one who actually made physical contact with the "egg" to actually trigger it)
His ability, Revolt of the Body doesn't actually do much, primarily because it's not much of an ability and functions more like Great Old One. It's main point of use is just shapeshifting and letting Tatsumi be able to do that without becoming unstable again. But... perhaps it does have other capabilities yet to be seen...
Tatsumi is fairly laid back but is also frequently bored and gets sleepy if his interest isn't held. He seeks out a lot of novelty to keep himself entertained (and yes as a result he is easily taken in by video games for those dopamine hits. Please don't let him near a casino.) He's rather sluggish in most aspects but when excited can cause a lot of accidental damage by forgetting how strong he is. He has a penchant for theatre and art and can be found skulking around galleries or performance halls people watching or waiting for plays or dances to begin.
He's designed to evoke a python or anaconda 🐍

Tumblr media
Mina Shibusawa-Stoker
Mina is the middle child of the Stoker triplets (including her older brother Jonathan and younger sister Lucy aka Lulu).
Her ability, White Wyrm Lair lets her hypnotize others. The ability takes the form of a crystalline looking serpent that inflicts a setting bite, its venom making the victim extremely susceptible to suggestion. Mina can choose to activate the latent venom at whatever point she chooses, provided the ability hasn't been deactivated in the time passed.
She's got a lot of confidence and can be a bit of a trickster, using her charms for her own amusement. She's also very into luxury and likes to lounge around. She's honestly got knife cat energy, which I love for her.
Her reptile is a komodo dragon 🐉
References: Mina Harker (character in Bram Stoker’s Dracula), Bram Stoker novel The Lair of the White Worm
Tumblr media
Yukio Shibusawa
Yukio's one of the two "middle children" of the group (along with Slava, who isn't discussed here since they aren't a Shibusawa kid).
He's fairly laid back, or at least appears that way in terms of his introspective nature. He gets on well with most people and tries to be accommodating but can end up as a pushover in his attempts to people please conflicting against his own wants.
While he doesn't have an actual ability, he does eventually gain access to The Book. That plays a lot into his character and arch so I don't actually want to say too much about it here to avoid spoilers, sorry about that.
While it wasnt initially intended, for some reason he reminds me most of a snapping turtle 🐢
References: Yukio Mishima, assorted work by Mishima (Confessions of a Mask, The Frolic of the Beasts, The Sea of Fertility tetralogy (Spring Snow, Runaway Horses, The Temple of Dawn, and The Decay of the Angel))
Tumblr media
Epsilon Shibusawa
Epsilon is the baby of the family!
Because they're so young I don't have too much to say unfortunately.
They don't have an ability of their own but did end up inheriting access to Draconia's fog. They're very clingy to their family and don't like to be far from them or in new places around new people. They're generally very anxious and withdrawn, but they enjoy listening to stories and solving puzzles, which helps feed their curiosity.
While designed with the inspiration of a hognose snake, they also take some aspects from crocodilians 🐊
References: the greek letter Epsilon, Tatsuhiko Shibusawa’s The Song of the Eradication and The Rib of Epicurus
Tumblr media
Bonus "Fun" Fact!:
The reason all of them have dragonic hybrid physiology is as a result of being fused with energy from Draconia. Tatsumi is of course his own special case in regards to that being a literal singularity and Revolt Of The Body making it possible for him to shift just how human vs monster he appears.
The others are permanent, with their horns growning from the spot in their skulls where Shibusawa embedded shards of Draconia gems into them, thus making them hybrids just like him.

Video Games Mimics and Time Travel
Recently WhatCulture Gaming did a video about open world games that manage to trick players and one of the examples was the mimics in Dark Souls. Which were treated as if they were this new and innovative thing... at 2011 when Dark Souls released.
And this sort of boggles my mind.
This is the illustration from the 1977 Monster Manual in which the mimic appeared for the D&D game.
Tumblr media
At the time mimics were described as being able to perfectly mimic stone or wood and would appear as tables, chairs, doors, and yes... treasure chests.
In D&D anything can be mimic.
Tumblr media
They quickly became a favorite tool of GMs such that they were practically a meme already in the 80s with numerous anecdotes, comic strips, and horror stories already being common knowledge to the tabletop roleplaying community well before the internet was much of a thing.
There were also many different variations of the mimic, including one that could mimic metal. There were also already described to be two kinds of mimics, a smaller intelligent kind that could be friendly to PCs that fed them and tell them about things in the area or larger "killer mimics" of the sort that Dark Souls players most know about.
But beyond the mimics there were Trappers which are essentially mimic floors:
Tumblr media
the Lurkers which are mimic ceilings:
Tumblr media
Cloakers which are mimic cloaks:
Tumblr media
and Piercers which are mimic stalactites:
Tumblr media
Basically, there was a good 15-20 years in which it was popular to populate adventures, published or homebrew, with some variation of a carnivorous beast that hunted by mimicking some inanimate objects. Enough so that I'm surprised that the infamous gazeebo story was not just determined to be a mimic once the PCs had decided in their heads that it was a creature.
Note also, that there have been numerous other variations of the mimic in the time since then.
Dark Souls isn't even the first video game that the mimic appears in. It seems that Dragon Quest is the video that first settled on mimics always being treasure chests. Though the first Dragon Quest was released in 1986 and it was Dragon Quest 3 in 1988 that introduced mimics:
Tumblr media
And Ultima I also had mimics appearing only as chests (probably due to the ease on assets)
Tumblr media
It's probably more fair to say that Dragon Quest established mimics as fake-chests to the Japanese video community.
When I've pointed this out, I've been told "Dark Souls did it better" and no... they really didn't. They have better graphics, but they're not nearly the meme that D&D mimics already were by the time I got into the hobby in the mid 80s.
Dark Souls mimics are well executed and do provide a narrow sort of paranoia as far as chests are concerned, but they're still a pretty basic and reduced rendition of the classic D&D mimic.
As far as video games go, Dark Souls does do a good job at creating the need to check chests to see if they are a mimic or not, though.
Tumblr media
And this is something that some other Souls-Likes have taken. Such has how you can tell whether or not a mujina is hiding in a chest or not in Nioh 2.
Tumblr media
That said, there is a prior video game entity that functions entirely the same as the Dark Souls mimic and that's the mimics in Ultima 9 released in 1999. Where they are creatures with bird-like legs that appear as treasure chests.
Tumblr media
There is absolutely no question that Dark Souls did mimics better than Ultima 9, which is one of the sad cases of a potential masterpiece being eviscerated by corporate meddling. But the Ultima 9 mimics work very much like Dark Souls mimics and seem to be the most direct relation.
As far as innovative mimics... ehhh... I hesitate to label Nioh 2's mujina as a mimic in the same sense. They serve the same purpose, but they're a shapeshifting badger that will hop out to impersonate you when you open their chest. The interesting thing they take on their implementation is that encountering one doesn't have to be a fight (they are a fairly tough fight, btw, attacking you with your own skills). They will perform a gesture and if you perform the proper gesture quickly enough, they will clap and vanish leaving you loot behind. Get it wrong, take too long, try to run, or attack them and they will tear into you.
Tumblr media
The closest video games have gotten to proper D&D level mimic paranoia is 2017's Prey.
Tumblr media
Where I've seen mimics impersonate chairs, potted plants, weapons, medkits, and even the dead bodies of other mimics.
Tumblr media
Then in Moonlighter you get the chance to get a mimic pet that helps improve your inventory.
Tumblr media
And while they're mostly just setting fluff, Potionomics has mimics appear in many places including all of one character's personal gear, the vending machine you're given by them later, and the teleporting coffin mimic the gothy bard uses to travel in (also their guitar).
Tumblr media
This isn't the only video game where I've encountered this phenomena of someone declaring something is amazing and incredibly innovative which just barely impacts me.
For years Bioshock Infinite's story and ending had been built up as this amazing mind-blowing stuff. And when I watched it.... it was stock time-travel story resolution.
Tumblr media
It's literary terrain that has been well worn by Robert A Heinlein and Ray Bradbury.
By comparison, the infamous Bioshock "would you kindly" twist IS amazing and hinges sharply on the interactive nature of video games and is something that a novel or short story really couldn't pull off.
Again, I'm not saying Dark Souls and Bioshock Infinite did these things badly. They did things especially well. It just seems odd to me that they get upheld as these amazing innovative ideas. And the build up they give these concepts just causes the competent execution to fall flat with me once I understand it's nothing new.
Some of my friends probably put it very succinctly.
"For a lot of people it was their first visceral experience with mimics."
"A lot of people were unborn back when the innovative mimic happened, let alone the definitive ones."
"First experience of something is Formative for people."
