Heeey prompt thing (if you have time!) What about something where everyone is getting their college applications back and Steve is just getting sadder and sadder because he’s rejected from pretty much everywhere, but he’s trying hard to be happy for everyone else so hides it. But then Billy finds him crying over the latest rejection (I dunno maybe his Dad even tried a bribe/donation and they still said no) and Steve’s thinking he’s dumb and he’s gonna lose everyone and then. (Pt1)

(Pt2) Billy actually reads over Steve’s essay and figured out he might be dyslexic- but no one else ever has. And maybe he gets Steve some help, or gets him to talk about wanting to do something more vocational at college (working with kids in some way?) but just trying to please his Dad or something like that??

Steve has 6 unopened college response letters sitting on his desk. UCLA, University of Michigan, Penn State, Baylor University (He thought Texas might be fun), Huntington University, and Indiana State. He should get into at least one, Indiana State, because his dad sent the admissions office “extra incentive.” He starts with UCLA, rips it open as best he can with shaking hands.

“Dear Mr. Harrington,

We’re sorry to inform...”

He stops reading, already knows he didn’t make it. He reassures him self that it’ll be okay. One is sure to say yes.

“Dear Mr. Harrington,

“We’re sorry to inform...”

Penn State

“Dear Mr. Harrington,

We’re sorry..”

Baylor University

“Dear Mr. Harrington,

We’re sorry...”

He takes a deep breath, and wills the tears not to form. He trembles as if he’s freezing and grabs the Huntington University letter, he prays that he got in to at least one college on his own.

Huntington University

“Dear Mr. Harrington,

Unfortunately you were not accepted for the fall semester.”

Indiana State

This one should be better, he thinks.

“Dear Mr. Harrington,”

He takes a breath.

“We’re sorry...”

“No.” Steve can’t breath. He didn’t think it was possible. They didn’t want him, even with his father’s generous donation. He backs up to the wall and slides down until he’s sitting and buries his head in his knees. Silent tears track down his face, he takes in a shuddering breath. He sits there for a while and contemplates what he’s going to tell his dad. He knows he’s going to get shit for it, and proved his father right, he really is too stupid, and he’s just a disappointment to the Harrington name. He’s pulled out of his sorrow when he hears someone pouting on his front door. He runs to the bathroom and splashes some cold water on his face, takes a couple breaths, and makes sure it doesn’t look like he’s been crying for the past hour. He walks down the stairs and stands in front of the door, preparing to have a “pleasant” conversation with whoever is standing out there. He opens the door and Nancy and Jonathan are standing there with matching grins.

“Steve! Jonathan and I got accepted into Indiana State! And Jon got accepted into an art School in Chicago too!” Nancy cheers as she throws her arounds around him in joy. “Did you get your letters yet, Steve?” Jonathan asks, and Steve just shakes his head, “Not yet,” he mutters out in a fake hopeful voice. “Well when you do, we need to celebrate!” And Steve agrees, mustering the best smile he can. He can’t bring down their moods just because he’s not smart enough. He forces himself to be happy as he congratulates both of his friends.

Days pass, and every time Nancy calls asking if he got his letters, he denies, denies, denies. A week after his rejections, a smiley Billy shows up at his door with a piece of paper in his hand. “I got in to UCLA! Isn’t that great Stevie? Now you and me can move to California, and go to school together and leave this town behind!” Billy exclaims. Steve just grins, happy to see his love happy, “I haven’t gotten my letters yet,” Steve lies and tries to not think about how he’ll never escape Hawkins.

Soon after Billy comes over, he’s got the kids in The Party up his ass, wondering where he’s going and how far he’s going to be “Leaving us behind, Steve!” as Dustin so nicely put it. He denies and says he doesn’t know, hasn’t decided yet. He gets away with lying for about a month and then everyone has received their letters and there’s no way Steve hasn’t received his yet.

He tells Nancy and Jonathan first, the disappointment on their faces hurts more than the actual rejection letters themselves. “Steve, how? You- We studied together every Monday and Wednesday after winter break together.” Nancy asks, a frown pulling at her lips. “Yeah, Steve. I thought we worked on your essay. We wrote a good one. Together.” Jonathan probes, wondering how this happened. Steve sighs, “I sent in an essay I wrote myself. I wanted to get in with my own work. I thought it was a good idea. Guess not.” He confesses. They leave, looking like Steve had deeply betrayed them, and he couldn’t help but feel like he did.

When he tells the kids, they’re not sad. Or disappointed in him. In fact, they’re happy. “Yes! Now we van keep using your house for our sessions! And I’ll still have my best friend!” Dustin exclaims, Steve’s heart swells at the best friend title. At least some people don’t think he’s a total failure.

He saves Billy for last, reading seeing the disappointment when he tells him he won’t be going to UCLA with him. When Billy comes in, he notices right away that the mood is not its usual. “What’s wrong, Stevie?” Steve doesn’t like the concern in his voice, it makes him feel guilty. “Bill... I didn't get accepted into UCLA,” “Oh, Steve, that’s okay. We can study together at State!” quick to solve the problem, not letting Steve’s news get him down. “But Billy, I didn't get accepted into State either. I wasn’t accepted anywhere.” Steve sniffles. He keeps his head down, not wanting to face the man infant of him. “Can I see your essay?” Billy asks, walking away, not waiting for an answer. “I guess, it’s really bad though.” Steve shrugs, and runs to his room to grab the original copy of his essay. “Gotta see what was so bad that all those snotty schools didn’t want my boy,” Billy says as he reads. When he finishes, he looks up and studies Steve’s face for a minute. “Is it really so bad you can’t say anything to me?”

“Have you ever been tested for learning disabilities?” And Steve looks positively offended, “Wh- No? I’m not- No. Harrington’s don’t have problems,” he says, his fathers words coming out at the end. “Since I was little, my teachers wanted to get me tested... But they stopped pushing for it with the help of my father’s money. I didn't need to get tested because.. Well, because Harrington’s don’t have learning disabilities,” Steve reveals, and he spits out the last two words like they burnt his tongue. “Steve, I know why you didn’t get accepted, why you have so much trouble in school.” Steve looks up at him, “I think you have dyslexia, Stevie. I don’t know how miss smarty pants Nancy and her investigator boyfriend didn’t figure it out.” Billy tells him gently.

“This means this isn’t the end, Stevie! You can go to schools, different colleges, that’ll have the right resources for you! You can come to California after all!”

Steve comes to terms with the new revelation and he and Billy take off to the library to do some research. After a couple of days of searching, Steve finds a school in California. He applies, and holds his breath when he opens his letter. With Billy standing next to him and gripping his hand tightly, he rips open the envelope.

“Dear Mr. Harrington,

We’re ecstatic to welcome you for the fall semester! Congratulations!”

Steve lets out a shocked laugh, like he can’t believe his eyes, and turns to Billy. “I did it!” “You did it.”

They tell The Party, and Nancy and Jonathan, and everyone is so happy for him. “I knew you could do it, kid.” Chief Hoppers says, looking at Steve proudly. The kids are a little sad, but feel better when Steve assures them he’ll be back at thanksgiving, and they can throw a week long D&D session at his house.

In the fall, Billy and Steve set off in the Camaro, a tiny apartment and 2 colleges wait for them on the west coast. Billy can’t drive fast enough.

Part three.

Hey kids! this chapter will be a bit longer than the others, soo yeah. Happy valentine’s day!! Part four will be out by Monday.

TW: Angst, Nightmares, Mentions of family loss.

The sun had set a little over an hour ago, and the boys were three-fourths of the way to Lawrence. Dean was driving the Impala, of course. Jack pleaded to sit in the passenger seat this time, and Sam was all for it. Him and Cas had it made in the backseat.

Though he was feeling better than that morning, Sam still got a little woozy halfway through the drive, but it wasn’t too much to handle. He was still exhausted from lack of sleep throughout the week, so he fell asleep with his head against the window, Cas holding his hand gently. Though, he made sure Dean and Jack could not see them through the rear-view mirror, because he knew that Sam would have another freak-out if they saw. But, what they didn’t know wouldn’t kill them. Jack smiled.

The car was quiet, save the music from the radio, which was turned down.

But as the Impala thundered down the road, Sam frowned in his sleep as a violent storm thundered in his dream.

…

Sam opened his eyes with a start.

Where am I?

Everything was pitch black, cold and wet. It was raining outside, and the thunder rumbled above him. He moved his head to look around, and his hair floated away from his face, revealing dark, murky water.

Sam was in a lake, sinking.

The water stung his eyes as he held his breath. He looked up, and saw that he wasn’t too far from the surface. Sam tried to swim up, but the surface got farther and farther away as he did. So he swam faster.

It finally became closer, but Sam couldn’t hold his breath for much longer. He tore at the water furiously, desperately. But no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t make it. He felt lightheaded.

I’ll never see my brother again. I’ll never see Cas or Jack again, I won’t get to tell them what happened, I won’t get to say goodbye!

The Winchester’s vision clouded with tears, but the water washed them away. He felt a lump in his throat that he could not swallow, and an emptiness in his mind that he could not fill with anything but the word breathe.

It was soft for a while, but then it grew louder and started to sound like Dean. Sam refused, but it grew louder and louder and soon, he couldn’t take it anymore.

…

Sam gasped and sat up as stiff as a board, his chest and throat burning as he coughed. He was still in the car, but they were parked at a motel. Dean was leaning into the backseat, a hand on Sammy’s arm, shaking him awake and was telling him to breathe. Jack watched in confusion and fear as Castiel led him out of the car to their motel room. “He’s fine, Jack. It’s another human thing,” he said.

Sam took deep breaths. He took hold of himself, yet still shaking and panting as Dean asked him if he was okay.

“Yeah, I-I’m fine,” he said, but he still felt like he was drowning. He ran a hand through his hair and sighed. “Just.. a dumb dream. I’m okay.”

Sam shook Dean’s hand off of his shoulder and scoffed. Dean studied him a bit longer before shrugging and hopping out of the Impala and grabbing the bags out of the trunk. As Sam stepped out into the open air, he staggered and braced himself on the car. He felt dizzy for a moment, and passed it off as standing up too fast. Dean looked at him with concern as he slammed the trunk. “You sure you’re okay?” he asked, starting off to the motel room. “Dean, I said I’m fine. I just had a weird dream and got up too fast,” Sam said, following.

“What kind of weird dream?”

“I dunno, I was just.. Drowning, I guess.”

“Huh,” Dean mused and walked into the room with Sam, locking it behind them. Jack and Cas were waiting.

“Sam, are you alright?” Jack asked with worry. Sam smiled softly, ruffling his hair. “Yeah, I’ll be fine. Don’t worry.”

Cas looked up to the younger Winchester. “I told him about dreams, and how they can affect humans. I must have worried him,” he said. Sam shrugged. “It was just one of those random dreams, I’m sure it didn’t mean anything.”

But Sam wasn’t sure at all. He knew what the dream meant, and he remembered what he said the night before when he was drunk. Yes, he was drunk, but he knew good and well that what he said was true. He was stressed. Really, really stressed. He just didn’t want to admit it to himself again.

And so he distracted himself with his family, and they sat down for a nice pow-wow before getting their rest.

Dean and Jack shared the bigger bed, leaving Sam alone in the smaller one. But it wasn’t small enough. Sam still felt an emptiness beside him, a cold spot. Cas wasn’t there, he was off doing some angel errand.

Sam lay awake, but had his eyes closed in hopes of falling asleep. But no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t. His mind was racing, thinking about Castiel, his dream, their conversation from last night.

Ah, last night.

It was so wonderful being curled up against such an amazing, adorable, admirable angel like Castiel. And Sam sort of laughed at the fact that he thought Cas was cute, considering it wasn’t actually Cas, but Jimmy Novak’s vessel. Jimmy was pretty, not gonna lie. Sorry you lost such an awesome meat suit, man.

But Sam snapped himself out of it. Stop pining, that’s stupid and you can’t date an angel of the lord. It’s literally in the bible.

But is it?

Technically Castiel isn’t male or female, he thought, unless angels have assigned genders. Do they? I’ll have to ask when Cas gets back.

And then he remembered that Cas wasn’t there, and he was back to square one.

…

The other angels had reached out to Castiel through Angel Radio, asking for his help retrieving a soul who had escaped from their heaven and was roaming the halls of other gates. Her name was Abigail Scott, was no older than thirteen and she had been in a plane crash east of an airport in Michigan three weeks ago.

The angel immediately responded to the situation. It was dangerous having a wandering soul, as she could open another soul’s gate and then there would be two souls roaming around. And they would know that it isn’t real, and they would tell others that it wasn’t real..

It just wasn’t something that the angels had the time to deal with.

And so Castiel walked around the halls until he spotted her. She had bright orange hair and heavy freckles, and she had hazel eyes, just like Sam’s.

Ah, Sam.

Cas felt his wings flutter and his grace spark at the thought of him. He was so, so beautiful and amazing and-

Cas suddenly shook the thoughts out of his mind. Not now, focus.

“Abigail,” he started, and the girl at the other end of the hall startled and looked at him with those eyes. He resisted the urge to look away as he flushed red. “You can’t be out here, child. It’s dangerous.”

Abigail clenched her fists as she stalked towards him. She stopped about half way. “Who are you? Where am I?” she asked fearfully, warily. Cas averted his gaze, unable to concentrate. “You are in heaven. So is your grandmother, in the other hall.”

The girl relaxed, but still stared at him. She stepped closer. “Are you.. An angel?” she asked, and Cas nodded. “Yes, and I must take you back to your heaven.” he said gently, trying to make this quick. Abigail looked away, frowning. “Do I have to go back? I don’t want to live in a lie again,” she said sharply.

The angel looked back to her. Their eyes met again, and he held back the off-topic thoughts.

“You can, or I can take you to your grandmother. But you can’t stay out here,” he said. Abigail looked disappointed for a second, but then smiled. “It would be nice to see her again,” she said, and so they set off to find the room labeled “Francis Scott”.

As they walked, Abigail asked, “So, what’s your name? Do you have a name?”

Cas smiled softly. “Yes, I am Castiel. All angels have names, even the lowliest.” he answered. The girl smiled. “What’s it like being an angel? My mother has.. Or, had theories, but they were a bit over the top.”

“Well, it depends on the rank. If they are a leader, they listen to prayers and give the soldiers orders. The soldier’s job is the most tiring, doing as told and always on the run. The rest are just there for support or backup, if needed.”

“And where are you on that chart?”

Castiel thought as they rounded the corner to the next hall. “I don’t know. I caused a bit of trouble in the past, so the others wouldn’t really approve of me being in heaven any more than I have to.”

“Then where do you go? If you aren’t here?” Abigail asked.

“On earth. I have friends there. Sometimes, they’re even more like family.”

“Oh. Is that why you don’t talk like the other angels here? You sound different, you use more human-like words and ways of explaining things.”

“Yes, I must admit, they rub off on me.”

“These friends, what are they like?”

“Well, they are all hunters. They hunt dark creatures like werewolves, vampires or demons. First there’s Dean Winchester. He’s more on the tough side, always seems grumpy. Then there’s Jack Kline. He’s a Nephilim, half angel-half human. He’s very kind, and he’s powerful,” Castiel hesitated, “And then.. There’s Sam Winchester. The boy with the demon blood.”

Abigail looked at Castiel. “Demon blood? Is he bad?”

The angel looked back. “No, not at all. He’s the sweetest, most loving, caring and accepting human being I know. And he has eyes just like yours,” he said, smiling as his face flushed again. His grace spiked.

“It sounds like you really care about him,” Abigail said, “And I bet he cares so much about you too.”

Cas beamed at that thought. “Yes, I suppose he does.”

There was a moment of silence, and then Cas continued.

“You don’t seem to be upset that you’re.. You know..”

“Dead? Yeah, I guess I am a bit sad. But I know that this will be better than my life down on earth.”

“How so?”

“My life started out as just a big lie. I was adopted as a baby, and I’ve lived with these people who didn’t care for me much. My grandmother, my real one, found me at a music festival during the spring a couple years back. She wanted to take me with her, and I wanted to go, but my adoptive parents wouldn’t let me.

But they did agree to let me see her on the weekends, and we had the best time together. But..” she paused to rub her eyes, “In fall of last year, she suffered from a stroke, and.. didn’t make it out of the hospital.”

Castiel blinked, not knowing what to say. “I’m sorry, Abigail.”

The girl gave a teary smile. “It’s okay, I’ll be able to see her soon.”

“Speaking of soon,” Cas said as he came to a stop at a door that said, “Francis Alicia Scott”.

“Are you ready?” Cas asked, and Abigail nodded, tears rolling down her freckled cheeks. Her hazel eyes glistened with sadness and excitement, and she grabbed Castiel’s hand and squeezed it. He squeezed back.

And so, Castiel opened the door, revealing a beautiful field of grass and flowers. The sun was shining and the sky was a soft blue with white, puffy clouds scattered across. And up on a hill stood a great wisteria tree. And under it sat a petite older woman, with reddish gray hair and freckles, wearing a yellow dress and sunhat with a book in her hands and a picnic blanket spread under her. She smiled softly as she turned the page.

Now, Abigail was crying. Castiel showed concern, but she waved them off as ‘happy tears’.

“Well?” he said after a minute, gesturing to the woman. “Would you like me to come along?”

The girl shook her head, but threw herself onto the angel and whispered, “Thank you, Castiel.”

And with that, she began to make her way through the lush field, and when she called out to her, Abigail’s grandmother smiled greatly as she sprung up and rushed to her. She embraced the child and Abigail returned it, and they walked back to the tree hand in hand.

Castiel smiled, feeling something prickle at the corners of his eyes.

A single tear fell to his trench coat.

And as he was about to leave, he heard a shout from behind him. He turned, and Abigail and her grandmother were waving with sad smiles on their faces. He waved back, beaming, and disappeared through the wall.

As he closed the door behind him, Castiel lingered before starting back down the hallway. Another tear escaped his eye, and he wiped it away with his sleeve, like he saw Sam and Dean do.

Maybe they have rubbed off on me, he thought.

My boss is starting to refuse my days off cause I "take too many" when I need to be going to therapy once a week instead of lol, once every 3 weeks, 2 if I'm lucky. I'm struggling with money cause my dad is starting to make me buy him liquor and doesn't always pay me back. I need a new car cause cause mines breaking and has maybe 5 months tops left in it. I went from over $1000 in savings to like probably $200, I'm too scared to look. I've also been told the my two top priorities need to be going to school and finding a new job. Working at a liquor store is triggering old habits and addictions. I was smoke free for months and now I'm trying all these crazy new things I shouldn't be laying my hands on, and I'm worried I'm going to start drinking next. I can't find the time to go look at schools cause my boss won't give me my days off and I don't get my schedule for the week until the Monday of, so planning appointments and my life currently is absolute bs.

This tiny Town is killing me, being here makes me feel trapped and I feel like I'm never gonna get out of here. I'm.... Super hesitant to, but I might make a help post.... Mostly for a car, cause if I have a better car I can get to better jobs. I'm 30 minutes out from other cities and my car can barely handle it. If I have a better one then I can get out faster and will make my life significantly easier in Michigan when I move back. I would offer commissions, but I'm going to be honest, I won't have the time. Maybe I'll do like, little thank you doodles or something but rn I'm just fucked.

Blue Jackets’ Elvis Merzlikins says win over Stars ‘karma’ for fan’s Matiss Kivlenieks comments

Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins wasn’t satisfied with allowing just one goal in a win over the Stars on Monday night. He wanted to keep Dallas off the board entirely.

He wasn’t motivated by anything the Stars’ players did, but rather a spectator in a Stars sweater who Merzlikins said made inappropriate comments before the game about Merzlikins’ late teammate and friend, Matiss Kivlenieks.

“I was expecting a shutout, because I believe in karma,” Merzlikins said after his team’s 4-1 victory, per The Athletic. “There are some stupid people in this world. It was really bad what happened in the tunnel when I was walking out (for warmups).” Merzlikins did not repeat what the spectator said.

Kivlenieks died July 4 from the trauma of a firework mortar blast. The Latvian goaltender was 24. Merzlikins, 27, witnessed the tragedy. The accidental explosion occurred at the Michigan home of Blue Jackets goaltending coach Manny Legace. Legace was hosting a celebration after the wedding of his daughter, Sabrina.

Merzlikins made 31 saves Monday and wasn’t beaten until Tyler Seguin scored at 17:41 of the third period. He also got help from a few posts — and, he believes, Kivlenieks.

“After the first period, the three posts I got, I really (firmly) believed in karma. I saw that (Kivlenieks) was really there,” Merzlikins said, per The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline.

Merzlikins wore Kivlenieks’ No. 80 for the Blue Jackets’ season opener Oct. 14, and the team hung a No. 80 banner over the ice. Columbus went on to beat Arizona 8-2, with Merzlikins making 36 saves. On Monday, Merzlikins improved to 4-0-0, lowered his goals-against average to 1.47 and raised his save percentage to .952.

His early play is right in line with a vow he made in September during a Q&A with Portzline.

“My plan is to win a Vezina Trophy. I’m gonna win a f—ing Vezina for (Kivlenieks),” Merzlikins said. “We can’t make promises because this is hockey and we don’t know how the season can go, but this is my goal. I believe I’m going to reach it. I’m not going to have any limits. I’m just gonna go all-in. Honestly, I don’t care, I’m going all-in for the Vezina.”

Horvat’s shootout goal sends Canucks past Canadiens 6-5

Bo Horvat scored the shootout winner and the Vancouver Canucks overcame Tyler Toffoli’s hat trick to beat the Montreal Canadiens 6-5 on Wednesday night.

Horvat put a shot between the legs of Montreal goalie Carey Price to make the Canucks winners in their home opener.

Vancouver’s captain details his thought process in the shootout.

“Basically close my eyes and shoot. I’m not thinking too much,” Horvat said.

“He’s obviously one of the best goaltenders in the world, so I think you just try and pick your spot. And thankfully it went in.”

Horvat and Brock Boeser each finished with two goals and an assist for Vancouver in regulation. Tyler Motte also scored and J.T. Miller had three assists.

“When we got one, it just felt like the flood gates were going to open and then we got a few more,” Boeser said. “It was huge to get that going.”

Canucks goalie Braden Holtby stopped 31 shots in regulation and overtime.

Carey Price had 23 saves for the Canadiens, who are unbeaten in regulation so far this season.

In addition to Toffoli’s scoring, Jesper Kotkaniemi had a goal and an assist and Brendan Gallagher scored his first of the season.

Boeser forced overtime 16:51 into the third period, blasting a snap shot past Price for his second goal of the game.

Toffoli had put the Canadiens up by one 32 seconds earlier, deflecting in a shot by Jeff Petry.

Toffoli spent the end of last season in Vancouver after the Canucks acquired him from the Los Angeles Kings at the trade deadline. He had 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 10 regular-season appearances for Vancouver, then signed a $4.2 million, four-year deal with Montreal as a free agent.

“I’m not gonna lie, I don’t really care who scores the goals, I just want to win games,” Toffoli said. “We had the opportunities to win and hold on to it, so it’s unfortunate.”

Canadiens coach Claude Julien said his players spent more time in the penalty box than he would have liked.

“We didn’t lose the game because of dumb penalties. We lost it in a shootout,” he said. “But at the same time, I’ve said it many times already: We need to be a little bit more disciplined in those situations because besides maybe (Brett) Kulak’s penalty, every other one of them were well deserved and that’s on us.”

What happens now that The Game has been cancelled?

Well, I wasn’t really prepared to write this article. Even more so, I wasn’t prepared or even expecting to write this on Wednesday. I had put a very little amount of thought into what I wanted to write in this space in the event that the unthinkable happened. Well, the unthinkable has happened. The Game has been cancelled. For the first time since 1917, The Game will not be played. Michigan cancelled on Tuesday a little after 1:00 citing an increase in Covid cases on the team. This is where things get weird, at least to me. On Monday the news broke that the Wolverines were preparing to practice on and have scheduled meetings with the press. There was a lot of optimism out of Ann Arbor that The Game would be played. Then a whirlwind of bad and then worse news broke. First was that all scheduled press conferences would be cancelled(including Jim Harbaughs, which should have been a really bad sign), and then around the time the Buckeyes were having their media meetings the news broke that Michigan’s Athletic Director said that The Game was being cancelled as Michigan would be unable to field a team this week(there's a joke in there somewhere, but I’m not going to make it out of respect to the fact that we very well could be talking about the health of players and staff members, who are people just like us). We don’t have a verified number of positive tests in the Wolverines program, but I’ve seen rumors floating around on twitter that it’s approximately 45 players, which is over half of the 75 man roster. Other things I’ve seen are that Michigan would only have one eligible Quarterback to play(ok, I’m gonna make this joke), which is the same number of eligible Quarterbacks Michigan has had all year since Dylan Mcaffery bolted for different pastures(sorry Joe Milton and whoever else is in the QB position not named Cade Mcnamera). I don’t entirely know what to believe. I do know that 45 players is more than the amount of players Ohio State had out(23) this past weekend when they played Michigan State. And I do not believe that Michigan is trying to dodge playing Ohio State in order to keep them out of the postseason. The potential negative outcomes that could occur if the Wolverines cancel the game solely to dodge playing Ohio State and it were to get out via a disgruntled player or staff member that gets fired this offseason far outweighs the potential positives. With that being said, I want to take a look at what comes next for both teams now that The Game has been cancelled.

What’s next for Ohio State

We’re gonna start off with what comes next for Ohio State because it’s a bit more complicated for them than it is for Michigan(more on that later). As I wrote yesterday, Ohio State pretty much needed The Game to be played this week. I also said that the importance of The Game depended on where the College Football Playoff(CFP) committee ranked Ohio State this week. Well the rankings came out last night, and Ohio State is still(I have absolutely no clue how) ranked 4th. It keeps them in playoff contention. It helps that Texas A&M isn’t playing a game this week either, so what it may come down to is what the CFP committee thinks after Conference Championship week. Some of these problems would be alleviated if the Buckeyes can find a game to play this week and then they play in the Big 10 Championship game. If they don’t that makes things a lot more interesting. So, the first thing the Buckeyes should focus on doing, is trying to find someone to play on Saturday. The biggest problem is that they are limited to Big 10 opponents. Which means there is no chance in hell they will be playing Texas A&M. Or Coastal Carolina. Or BYU. Or literally anyone else that isn’t in the Big 10. The biggest reason that finding a team to play this Saturday is important is because I highly doubt the Big 10 will change the rule. Kevin Warren seems like he wants to die on this hill. And so does Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith(more on my dislike for both in a later article). Gene Smith is the AD of the flagship program in the Big 10, but he is more worried about kissing up to the Big 10 commissioner than he is about helping out his program. Just like he has been for years. But that’s enough of that. So if Ohio State can’t play this weekend, things are most likely going to be pretty bleak. The Buckeyes will then have a bowl game, or if they are very lucky and the CFP committee is feeling the spirit of the holiday season, Ohio State will be playing in the CFP against Alabama(most likely because that means Ohio State would be the 4 seed) or Notre Dame(less likely because that means Ohio State would be the 3 seed). And if it’s not the College Football Playoff, Ryan Day and the rest of the Buckeyes coaching staff will very quickly have to shift gears to trying to keep the Junior class of players like Justin Fields, Chris Olave, Tommy Togiai, and others that way they can have one more run at a National Championship next year, under hopefully more normal circumstances. If they can’t keep the Junior Class players who are looking at leaving for the NFL, then they have to start prepping the next wave of starters in order to be in Playoff and National Championship contention next year.

What’s next for Michigan

Things aren’t clear cut or simple for the Michigan Wolverines either. Things are just a little less complicated. They won’t be going to a bowl game. They went 2-4 this season, and after cancelling the final two games of their season, the taste that is left in their mouth will be a bad one, as the Michigan Wolverines lost 27-17 to the Penn State Nittany Lions, giving Penn State their first win of their 2020 campaign, and Michigan never looked like they had a chance of beating Penn State. Combine that with the three overtimes needed to beat Rutgers, the blowout losses against Wisconsin(who had only played one other game up to that point) and Indiana, and the loss to Michigan State despite being a 24 point favorite, this season has only had one bright spot for Michigan, and that was Week 1 against a Minnesota team that turns out to not be that great. So the first question that needs to be answered is about the Head Coach, Jim Harbaugh. On Sunday I said that I believe the only way Harbaugh would get shown the door is if The Game was played and Michigan got the doors blown off of them for a third straight year. I still believe that, and with The Game being cancelled, I think he is safe. In fact, I have heard/read some rumors that Harbaugh has been offered a contract extension, he just has to say yes. Now those just might be rumors, and I do think that the powers that be at Michigan still may have a discussion about Harbaugh, but again, I do ultimately believe that the struggles this season will get chalked up to being because of Covid. However, if Harbaugh gets fired or chooses to leave on his own accord, that means Michigan will have to find someone to replace him. And I don’t really know who they will hire to do that. I don’t think the top Head Coaching candidates will leave their current jobs to go to Michigan. If Harbaugh stays, which is the most likely scenario, he will have to reevaluate his coaching staff, and I do believe that some of them will get fired. I think Don Brown will be one of the first up for the chopping block, as his defense has gotten torn to shreds by Ohio State two years in a row, and aside from one game this year, has not looked good at all. As for the rest of the staff, I don’t know who would be replaced, as I just don’t know enough about the program. But I do believe that not too many members of Michigan's coaching staff have a lot of job security.

Well, that’s it for today’s Hate Week article. I don’t really have much else to say other than I am disappointed. Yeah, it may be in the best interest of player safety, but it still sucks for the athletes. Saturday was supposed to be Senior Day for the Buckeyes, and it’s distinctly possible they won’t be able to play one last game in The Horseshoe. And it’s not great for the Wolverines seniors either, as their last memory of college football will be of losing to Penn State and then having two games cancelled because of Covid. I’ll be back tomorrow to look at other aspects of this year’s iteration the other ramifications of The Game being cancelled, because it’s Hate Week ladies and gentlemen.

Today is the 14th day of November welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today as we continue our journey forward. I guess we’re…we’re approaching the middle of the 11th month now. We’re gonna cross through the middle of this month before the weekend is over. So, a month and a half left in this year and we have already discerned…we've already determined to finish strong and well. And, so, let's dive in. We are reading from the God's Word Translation this week, which is today. Ezekiel chapters 29 and 30.

Prayer:

Father, we thank You for Your word and we thank You for another week in Your word. And it really is true, we’re looking at the weeks that remain versus the weeks that we have already moved through and we see that there’s just a handful weeks left in this year. That seems strange but it is the reality. And ,so, as we as we look at that, we also take the time as we've done so many times this year to look back and see the way that You have them imprinted Your word on our heart and that it has spoken to us in profound and meaningful ways impacting our lives, impacting the ways that we've lived our lives this year and we’ve needed it more than ever because it's been one of the strangest years ever. And, so, we are grateful, and we turn our face forward with tremendous anticipation for all that You have yet to say to us this very year. So, come Holy Spirit, plant the words that were spoken today in the soil of our lives. May we cultivate them, may we care for them and may they sprout, and may they yield the harvest of the fruit of the Spirit within us we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

Hey Daily Audio Bible family this is Becky and Orlando it’s been a crazy year for all of us. I know 2020 is one year that just I’d like to not have happened. But anyway, I haven’t called in very much this year, but I’ve been listening and right now I’m a little bit behind. I’ve really enjoyed hearing all the new voices and being able to hear some of the old voices like Annette Allison and Shante. I’m so happy to hear from you again in Detroit and hearing that you’re going to come down to Florida. But I have an urgent prayer request for you. My mom is an atheist up in Massachusetts and things are pretty dire right now. Her husband has Parkinson’s disease and she’s now decided that she’s not gonna treat a UTI that he has and she just wants to speed up his progression and now he hasn’t woken up since Thursday and today’s Monday and he hasn’t had any food or drink. She’s not waking him up to feed him or anything or give him antibiotics. And, so, I’m just praying, praying, praying for his soul because as far as I know he is not a believer. And, so, I’m praying that he somehow in the state that he’s in surrenders to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and am praying for my mom’s soul also. Hi this is Christina I’m a child of God calling for prayer for my family. This Friday when…well…today is the eighth or the ninth, I’m not even sure but this past Friday when Brian…after Brian read about Ezekiel chapter 16 __ of God how He feels about Jerusalem and the betrayal I found out that my husband’s cheating on me. And it’s been a very tough weekend but God has given me a lot of peace and if it wasn’t for my faith in God and my…the Bible studies and this Daily Audio Bible that I’m so much in the word that I can be strengthened with His power to get through it but my son and my daughter are not believers and neither is he of course. Anyways, but could you please look them up in prayer. They are in a lot of pain. My daughter especially is devastated because she had her dad in very high regard. My daughter’s daughters name is Phoebe and my son’s name is Eric my husband is Humberto. He’s agreeing to go to a counselor to counselling or a therapist with me and he’s admitted to the affair. And, so, if you’d please keep me in prayer. Thank you.

Good morning my son is…is diagnosed with autism and he’s getting a little older now. And, so, he is dealing with meltdowns. And anybody that has autism…a kid with autism knows that they…a lot of them deal with meltdowns and his are now starting…they went from having one once every week may be every two weeks now he’s having them, three or four of them a day. And, so, he’s only 10, he’s getting bigger and he’s strong. And, so, he’s getting violent and it’s…he’s just such a sweet kid. And, so, it hurts me, and his mother’s feelings and it hurts our hearts to see him act out like that. We know that’s not what he wants to do but he can’t help it. And, so, we’re just praying…we still…just we still believe God’s gonna heal him completely from autism but we’re believing God to…to…to stop these meltdowns. They’re…they’ve gotten a little bit much, overbearing for both of us. So, we just ask you guys to pray and remember him. His name is Michael. Thank you, guys.

My name is Eric Leo, I’m a sociologist, social psychologist, philosopher, author, blogger, and hip-hop artist and this is my journal where I talk about myself and my philosophy!

The “108” Book

I finished writing a hip-hop album to popularize the book. I’ve been releasing it on SoundCloud and promoting it through repost exchange. The goal is to find a label and management. However, I know I have to look marketable. I have a plan to get there but it’s gonna take a couple of years. The biggest thing is my weight. I really don’t want to get in front of a camera until I lose more weight. I’m formulating the content format for Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. I can't afford a subscription to masterclass but I do plan on subscribing to skillshare to help learn (for example) how to edit Instagram photos, make a TikToks, or use Logic.

I have been trying to message people in the industry. Just let people know I have a book and an album and do all this. I’m trying to see if anybody has any connections to A&Rs. The goal is to find a label. I would like to be one of Scooter Braun’s projects or be represented by management.

My “108” philosophy falls under some form of Panpsychism. I wanted to hold a sign in downtown Coldwater that says “I love you, Buy My Book, EricLeo.org,” but the city said I couldn’t do it. I plan on donating the book to libraries once the pandemic lifts.

On The Move

I don’t have much money to put towards promoting the book because I want to invest in a house. After I get the house I can try and budget some. I want a house, a calico cat, and a border collie dog. I want to move to Lansing and attend grad school at MSU. Lansing has both MSU that has an environmental sociology department and an affordable housing market. MSU is my first choice but I’m also currently looking at Western, MSU, U of M, and Eastern. I wanna stay in Michigan, near Grand Rapids latitude or lower.

I plan on taking the GRE in September. I really don’t like the idea of the GRE because I don’t like to study just to take a test. And I especially don’t wanna stress out about it because I see it as my major hurdle to getting into grad school. I bought the 2019 edition book to take the GRE back in 2018. I plan on just studying that for a month and taking the test.

I have 3 good letters of recommendation. I have been emailing professors. I want to study the relationship between the environment, diet, and food. I want to study why there are little to no healthy alternatives in food. Is it the consumer that’s not demanding it, the supplier who’s no providing it because of cost, a combination of both, and how they interplay. I’ve had this interest for years in the blog under “The Sustainable Miracle Diet.” This would fit at MSU who has a strong focus in the sociology department of health and medicine, environment, and migration. I have an idea for a keto fast food restaurant and I want to further develop it in school.

Diet, and Exercise

The Doctor says I’m in remission. I’m so happy for my medication and never want to be without it. Being in the apartment is great. I can prepare my own meals. I’ve slowly been getting more appliances (like a blender, vacuum, or…). I can’t wait to get a crockpot.

I seldomly work out. I took a break and never went back. But I have kept up the diet. I follow a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting and a calorie deficit and I now weigh 230 pounds. It’s been hard. The weight loss is coming along slowly. I’m not losing weight at the rate I was back in 2017.

I’ve had to strengthen my resolve. I’ve been cheating a lot with snacks like cheese, peanut butter, and especially pork rinds. I love them, I can’t get enough and if I buy them I’ll eat them til they are gone. Losing weight is basically controlled starvation and I really want the crunch of the pork rind and fizz of diet pop. When I’m hungry it tastes so good. In small quantities, it’s fine but I can’t control myself so I end up eating the whole bag.

Media Consumption

I got Hulu. I wanted it to watch “Dave” on FX. I also watch shark tank, family guy, flip or flop, and Diners Drive-ins and Dives. After I get through the Flip or Flop seasons I think I’m going to get rid of it. I figured I’d save and get something else for a while. I’m thinking about getting netflix just to catch up with everything and then moving on again. I honestly want to subscribe to the history channel. Curiosity Stream is great and been working out but I just need more. I currently am not subscribed to audible. I must say I feel like Lil Dicky in “Save Dat Money.”

Living On Disability

My credit card got paid off and gets paid off every month. I’m happy and hoping my credit score will go back up in the 800s.

My medication for schizoaffective disorder costs thousands. I can’t be without it unless I wanna be angry and dissociative. Healthcare is so important for me which is why I would currently only consider taking a career with good healthcare like a professor or real estate agent/broker. I’m certainly deterred from following my dreams of being a hip-hop artist unless I can find and label and they can provide health care.

I can’t think of anything that hurts the American economy more than privatized healthcare. I personally would be contributing to the economy, in taxes and expenditures, if America had universal health care. Because of the way America runs healthcare I'm not really interested in working until America gets free universal healthcare. I don't really want to invest in an economy that doesn't invest in its people. Regardless, I hope to work full time in the future.

Quite the day today. Went to San Francisco with some coworkers. I need to start preparing my sleep schedule for going back to Michigan next year, so I’ll save some time and let the pictures do the talking :)

This group, together with the guy I showed pictures of a few days ago, was the people I spent the most time with this summer. (Our WeChat group name is called 加班群 -- aka overworking squad LOL)

One of the things that I’m gonna miss most from this summer is all our lunchtimes together. We’re all from the same Amazon team, and I definitely spent 90%+ of my Monday-Friday lunches with at least a few of them this summer haha

Jeff Lawson was all set to secure investment in his new start-up Twilio when suddenly people thought the world might be collapsing.

Back on Monday, 15 September 2008, Jeff and his two co-founders walked into a meeting with potential investors in Silicon Valley.

Getting the funding was supposed to be “almost a formality”, remembers Jeff, who was 31 at the time.

Unfortunately, US investment bank Lehman Brothers had collapsed on the Sunday night, one of the most shocking moments of the then global financial crisis.

“We walk in, and it’s like chequebooks closed,” says Jeff. “People were wondering ‘is the world melting?!’.

“My co-founders and I looked at each other and thought ‘maybe this is a dumb idea. Maybe you know, maybe this is just stupid’.”

The idea Jeff and colleagues Evan Cooke and John Wolthuis had was a software business that helps companies automate communications with their users, be it by text message, or telephone and video calls.

Fast forward to today, and San Francisco-based Twilio is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and worth more than $14bn (£10.5bn).

With annual revenue of $650m in 2008, its thousands of customers include Uber, WhatsApp, Coca-Cola, AirBnB, Twitter, eBay, and UK retailer Marks & Spencer.

So when you get a text message from your Uber driver, Twilio’s technology likely handles that interaction. The same if you telephone M&S – Twilio’s technology will route the call. Or if you get a notification via numerous firms’ mobile phone apps.

Back in September 2008 the success of Twilio was still a world away. After the funding had fallen though, Jeff says he felt as if the company – which they started work on in March of that year – was back at square one.

But determined to carry on, he and his co-founders borrowed money from family and friends to get started on what techies refer to as the MVP – minimum viable product. As in, the most basic incarnation of their idea.

When that first pot of money started to run out, Jeff – with the blessing of his wife Erica – sold their wedding presents.

Twilio’s first client was a man who had designed a website to help people find their missing mobile phone. You’d visit the site, input the number, pay a dollar, and it would ring your phone.

Jeff and his colleagues made the process more automated. Hardly world-changing, but a client is a client.

A big break came in November of 2008 when Twilio decided to show off its technology by pranking the most influential tech blogger of that era, Michael Arrington, founder of tech news website TechCrunch.

It did this by telephoning him a recording of the pop song Never Gonna Give You Up by UK singer Rick Ashley. At the time there was a craze to unexpectedly play the song, a phenomenon that was given the term “rickrolling”.

The publicity Twilio gained caught the attention of record label Sony Music, which called Jeff the next day.

“There was a guy who was a manager of one of their bands,” says Jeff, now 41.

“And he said ‘look, we’ve been trying to have this little promotion where the band records a voice mail, and we blast it out to fans who opt into this. Can we build it?’.

“I told him ‘yeah sure, I’ve never heard of that idea’.”

With Sony Music on board as a client, Jeff was able to go back to the same investors who had previously turned him down. This time they said “yes”, and Twilio secured $1m of seed funding at the start of 2009.

It went on to raise $261m in investment, and in 2016 it floated on the stock market. Today it has 16 offices in 10 countries, and 1,275 employees.

Twilio’s business model sees it charge companies for every communication with a customer. For a simple text message in the US the fee is $0.0075. That doesn’t sound like much at all, but when a business is texting tens of millions of customers it can soon add up.

Growing up in Detroit, Jeff’s entrepreneurialism can be traced back to when, aged 13, he launched a video production company, despite knowing very little about it.

“My first event was a three-year-old’s birthday party,” he says. “By the time I graduated high school I was doing full wedding videos, and I made $15,000 for that. So I graduated high school with a lot of money saved up.”

Also learning to code as a teenager, he wrote computer programs for his father’s company, which provided the software for industrial printers.

Jeff then juggled doing a computer science and film and video course at the University of Michigan with business interests including running a company called Notes for Free. This offered college students a way to share notes and study material online.

Senior jobs at ticketing firm StubHub and Amazon then followed, before the idea for Twilio was born.

The company’s success is down in part to its terrific timing – it emerged just as businesses were realising that customers, particularly the younger ones, would rather get a text message than have to make a phone call. Or if they did need to make a call, they were simply not prepared to sit on hold.

However, it has not all been plain sailing for the business, with its shares slumping in 2016 and 2017 as it missed Wall Street’s earnings targets.

Alex Wilhelm, editor in chief of Crunchbase, a website that tracks tech investments, says: “Starting in mid-2016 Twilio went into Wall Street purgatory, losing more than half its value and seeing its stock stagnate until early 2018.

“Since then the company has been on a tear, appreciating rapidly and drawing accolades from media and investors alike. Twilio now has to prove that its sky-high revenue multiple is not dangerously inflated and that it can increase profitability while growing into its $14bn valuation.”

On a day-to-day basis Jeff says that Twilio staff are encouraged to solve problems on their own, without the need for hand-holding by bosses.

To counteract the possibility for reckless decision making, the company also tells employees that there should be “no shenanigans”.

It is more straightforward, Jeff argues, than a vague, loftier declaration like “have integrity”.

“I know what the word integrity means,” he says. “But do I really know if what I’m doing right now has integrity? It can be hard to tell.

“But shenanigans you know, you know shenanigans.”

update on the situation at work

okay, so i had thought my office mate (i have two, we’ll call them b and s and right now i’m talking about b) had just up and quit, like stopped showing up without a word and that was that but apparently that’s...not exactly how it went down

i know this because of how some shit went down today so okay like...i knew b’s supervisor (we’ll call her s) was supposed to be stopping by my office today because we’d spoken on the phone and i was under the impression she was going to give me some curriculum or whatever to start looking over and maybe show me how to do the scoring thing if she had time

so my other office mate, s, is there and we’re talking about the situation with b and i was telling her what i thought happened, blah blah blah

i get up to go make lunch, i’m literally gone like 3 minutes tops and when i come back from the kitchen b is there and i’m like...????

she’s got a bunch of stuff with her and she’s like, “yeah, i’m bringing back the rest of my supplies and s is supposed to meet me here to make sure i brought back everything”

because for our jobs like we usually end up taking a lot of our supplies with us and keeping them in our car just in case so she’d had a bunch of stuff with her, plus like her computer and phone and junk

and so s isn’t there just yet so b tells me and office mate s the situation and granted like...i’m taking her at her word on this, but from what i’ve gathered i don’t think she’s lying

so apparently she’d gone back to Michigan i guess last weekend? idk my brain’s been junk lately so time’s messy for me, but point being there was like...a weekend where she went up because i guess one of her best friends was having a baby so she wanted to be there for that but i guess she wasn’t actually going to deliver until monday or something and so b wanted to be able to stay so she reached out to her supervisors

i guess she didn’t have any pto left, but it was her understanding (and i’d been told this as well) that you could still take time off you just wouldn’t get paid and just make sure you talk to your supervisor first and that you don’t have anything on your schedule

i think she’d even tried to ask about maybe working four ten hour days to compensate for not being there monday or whatever but she just...didn’t hear anything back? which...again, from what i’ve heard before this, i don’t find too surprising

so, i think being that she was already frustrated, already at her limit as is, she just said fuck it and went ahead and took monday off

apparently when she got back to town she tried to log on to her stuff and couldn’t get in so she contacted the help desk and the guy was like, “oh, it looks like your account is set to be deleted soon” or something so like...cool. cool, cool, cool that’s a super cool way to fire someone, just like...don’t say anything, don’t respond to anything, don’t text, call, or email just...kick ‘em out, nice.

supposedly hr sent out a letter but she said she still hasn’t gotten it so...that’s cool

they’re putting it down as “job abandonment” but i just...idk. again, i wasn’t there, i’m sure i don’t know every little detail but that just seems....pretty unfair

and mind you too like...she’d told me before about how when she first started and got the curriculum that she didn’t get the opportunity to see anyone else teach, she had to do it all on her own and so pretty naturally then when it was her turn to start teaching she messed up and she ended up getting written up for it. that just...doesn’t seem right somehow???

idk. i know she was planning on moving back home soon anyway, but i think her plan had been to hang on until at least june because that’s when her husband’s contract with his job would be up and he’d be free to quit and they could move, so she could have still kept working and been saving up more money for that, but now it’s gonna be tight because this whole thing just kinda...happened

again, like...i understand she probably shouldn’t have stayed that extra day since she didn’t get the green light, okay fine but like...if she did genuinely attempt to reach out and her supervisors just weren’t responding i think that would call for more disciplinary action or something, not straight up termination and certainly not just, “Oh well, we’ve shut down your account but no one’s going to actually bother to say ‘hey, you’re fired’ and btw you need to report back to the office to deliver the rest of your shit, thx”

like...okay????

so yeah. i was already trying to not be too frustrated with her when i thought she just up and quit because i could understand the situation she was in, but now especially i’m like...well, fuck dude.

but here’s the real kicker too so like...b leaves and supervisor s is still there, office mate s is still there, and supervisor s turns to me and is like, “okay, so first i’ll ask, do you want this position?”

seriously?????????????????????????? after all that mess? Um...no. no thank you. i’m good.

so i said no and she seemed kind of put out i guess and was like, “Okay, well i wanted to check first before i post the position so i know if i should do it externally or internally” and i’m still just kinda...stunned, i guess.

but yeah, like i’m good with school-based, i’m happy where i am, i love my supervisors, i love my team, i have my own set of doubts about how good of a job i actually do, but all of my evaluations have been good and it seems like i’ve been doing all my paperwork and shit correct (aside from like one or two errors but even then it was just, “hey, you did this thing, double check next time but don’t sweat, it happens to everyone!”)

so...there’s that

and we talked some about me helping out and like i just put it out on the table, like...i said i had no problem trying to help as much as i could, but that honestly it does make me nervous

i pointed out to her that y’know i’m still pretty new here?? (like honestly, i started in october, but i’ve only been teaching on my own since january) and i’m still trying to figure out classroom discipline and handling students who are just kinda low-level rude and that the environments that this other position requires going into are not really something i feel comfortable with and i’m not confident that i’ll be able to do a good job

and she didn’t really have anything to say about that, so idk. i mentioned again that i was willing to at least try because i am. i can’t completely rule something out unless i’ve at least given it a shot first, but i wanted her to know up front where i’m coming from and why i’m certainly not interested in taking on that position full-time, just...god no

so we’ll see. she didn’t like...hand me any curriculum or talk about what the next step is, but i’ve got some training sessions on my schedule for may so i guess we’ll see what comes of that

with any luck hopefully they’ll be able to find someone soon and they can go ahead and just train that person instead of training me and this other school-based person, but i know that’s kind of a long shot (i know for my position they conducted like...three separate batches of interviews which had a pretty good handful of candidates each time and they picked me out of everyone so at least as far as my branch goes they’re pretty picky)

and if nothing else like...my supervisor did tell me i could let her know at any point if it’s just too much or i’m too uncomfortable and just don’t want to do it anymore, because she doesn’t want me to feel overwhelmed and especially doesn’t want me to just quit so i’ve got that in my back pocket, i guess

i just...wow.

i hate that this situation turned out the way it did, especially for b. i know she was going to quit anyway, but like still. i feel like she told me, though, that her position has had a pretty high turn over rate and i just...can’t imagine why.

i mean it’s already tough as is because of the work itself, like honestly i’m such an asshole but any time what i do has been too hard i’ve thought to myself, “well, at least i’m not doing THAT” (oh, how that’s come back to bite me in the ass) but like...yeah, that on its own would be hard enough to keep someone around long-term, i think, but adding on top of that supervisors who pile so much work on your plate and who don’t communicate with you like you should resulting in situations like this like...yikes on bikes, dude

it’s weird how we’re all in the same program but like...office mate s and i both have supervisors that are just...waaaaay different than that

like my supervisor is so chill about shit, she really doesn’t care how i arrange my hours so long as i don’t go over 40 and so long as i don’t feel like i’m just drowning on long days and shit.

she usually gets back to me super quick unless she’s just really tied up and even then it’s still never that long of a wait and she’ll tell me beforehand “hey, i’ll be out of town for this event, but you know you can reach out to so and so if you need something!” so that i’m never just sitting there like, “where is she, why isn’t she responding to me???” like she even gave me full access to her calendar online so any time she adds something to her schedule i can see it and know where she’ll be and when would be a good time for me to get in touch should i need to

i just...i really love my supervisor and that’s the only thing that scares me is that someone over her head might decide to pull me into this position against my will and that i’ll have to work under these other supervisors instead and i just...do not want any part of that whatsoever

i don’t wanna say i’d quit because i’d hate to, i really would, but like...i don’t think i could do that.

so yeah. that’s kind of where it’s at right now. as for where it will go...who fucking knows. i’m just gonna try to hang on and hope for the best and know that i’ve got a parachute strapped to my back even if i do get pushed out of the plane

SOLS - Liam’s POV

I wrote a little something that will never become its own thing because writing fanfic of your own fanfic of a show is so meta I don’t wanna go there, so here you are - salty little Liam’s first encounter with Brett, from his point of view. Enjoy ^_^

Liam's nineteen and some spare change when he first meets Brett.

He's also a lot of things that have absolutely nothing to do with his age: he's broke, resolutely ignoring near-debilitating mental health issues, steadfastly refusing to acknowledge his parents, and working a job that has him under the thumb of quite possibly the worst boss imaginable.

He's also, as Hayden would put it, a great foster-dad to a range of different animals, most notably a stupidly fat tabby cat with a penchant for eating things that aren't strictly food. Like shoelaces and tissues.

Said cat has gnawed his shoelaces into almost nothingness the morning Liam sees Brett for the first time, and Liam's pretty pissy over it. That's what he gets for letting it sleep on his fucking face and use him as a living pincushion; the cat clearly doesn't know boundaries.

"Customer," Hayden hisses to Liam, just past opening. "Try and smile."

Liam rolls his eyes, flips her the bird, and hides behind his coffee machine to avoid having to talk to or look at anyone.

Liam goes about his business, making coffees and calling names. He notices when he gets to Brett's mostly because he's the only person who hasn't ordered a fucking soy chai half-sugar latte with a splash of fuck-knows what; he's just ordered a nice, simple mocha. That's it. Liam can respect that, a guy who doesn't overcomplicate shit.

"Order for Brett?" he calls tiredly, loading a croissant up onto a plate. He's half-expecting the middle-aged dude in the corner to come over and he's ready to fight the guy - dude's been drooling over Hayden all morning and Liam can probably find it in himself to break some limbs today - but instead, the guy sitting closest to the counter unfolds himself.

Liam spares him a brief glance, mostly just noticing how stupidly fucking tall the guy is - like, modelesque, really. He pushes the tray over and goes back to his machine.

"Darth Vader?"

Liam looks up, surprised. The guy's got bright blue eyes, large, almond-shaped, with long lashes. "You didn't seem like a panda kind of guy," Liam says blankly. He's kind of bewildered at being spoken to, because - well, he's the barista, which means he doesn't have to talk to people, which is why he likes this job and refuses to learn how to operate the till.

The guy smiles. Thousands of stupidly white teeth. Little crows' feet at the corner of his eyes. Pretty. Stupidly pretty. Stupidly everything. Liam would probably try to fuck him if it weren't for the fact that the guy is almost definitely straight - Liam's getting no vibes there - and his own general level of saltiness on this particular day.

"Nothing wrong with pandas," the guy says - he's got a weird accent. Midwest? Maybe Michigan or Ohio - Liam supposes he could ask the dude whether he uses the word soda or pop, not that he's gonna, because that would be fucking weird.

He shrugs. "Pandas are cute I guess," he agrees. "But Darth Vader has the force."

He kinda figures the guy'll move away in a moment, but he doesn't. He looks down at his mocha, wraps his hands around it, and leans his hips subtly into the counter between them. Liam continues to clean the machine; he's done his part in keeping up the conversation.

"So why one or the other?"

So we're gonna keep doing this. Okay. Liam's resigned himself to the fact that cute guy with the weird accent and beaten-up attitude is about to find out that he's fucking weird; he gestures at Hayden. "She keeps telling me it'll improve business if we have "flair" or something," Liam mutters, not going to any effort to hide his disdain for the idea. "I mean I'm not really an artist but business means I have a job."

"You don't like it?" the guy asks.

"You know how many fucking pandas I draw a day, dude?" Liam asks dryly.

He's not sure if he's pleased or pissed off when the guy laughs; he didn't mean it as a joke, but the guy kinda looks like he hasn't laughed in a while, so it might be good for him. "Well," the guy says, smiling. "Thanks for the effort."

Liam shrugs nonchalantly, even though the mild praise has him softening considerably. "Kids like it."

"I bet." The guy's watching him closely, and as Liam turns to wipe the counter down, he leans forward a little; Liam steps back to compensate, feeling a little nervous at the close proximity.

"McGrumpy?" the guy asks, voice measured.

Liam checks his nametag. "Oh. Yeah. Apparently I have an attitude problem." He rolls his eyes a little at the thought, and at Hayden's vaguely exasperated, but fond scolding ringing in his head. "But that depends on who you're asking."

"Do you have an attitude problem?" Stupidly Pretty guy is smiling with his stupidly white teeth.

"Yeah," Liam admits reluctantly. He knows that, he just doesn't think it's enough of a problem to warrant effort into fixing it.

"So what's your real name?"

"Liam," he says, surprised at how willfully forthcoming he is. "That's Hayden, and I'd introduce you to our manager but once again, he's shot through and left us with twenty million bloody customers and one less pair of hands."

Pretty Boy - Brett, Liam remembers suddenly - leans across the counter, seemingly mindless of the way Liam steps back again. "Sounds bad," he says, and his voice is so genuinely sincere Liam's almost disgusted. He overcompensates for the niceness in his usual way - by acting like an abrasive prick.

"And he won't hire anyone else because he's fucking stingy, and doesn't want to actually have to declare employees on his tax, which is flouting about a million different laws. Probably."

His roughness apparently goes unnoticed, much like his shifty body language, because Brett replies with a simple, "You know much about law?"

"Only how to break it," Liam mutters moodily. "Which he is."

"You an expert in breaking the law?" Brett asks, only now seeming mildly concerned.

"Don't have to be," Liam says shortly. "You wanna break the law? Smash a window or snort some cocaine. It's easy."

Why the fuck, Liam? He asks himself, watching Brett open his mouth, then close it. Why? Of all the illegal shit you could've named, you picked fucking drugs. Good one.

"... Are you speaking from experience?" Brett asks, almost timidly, and Liam's so honest to God surprised the guy hasn't fucked off and left Liam to his weirdness he feels something that might vaguely resemble gratitude. If he could feel that, which, after the life he's had, he's fairly sure he can't.

"No," he says, almost quickly. "Just hypothetically. If you wanted to break the law, that's how you could do it. Or you could punch someone."

Drugs as a first example, violence as a second. If he ever had a shot getting laid with this guy, it just flew out the window. Probably broke the damn thing on the way out, too.

He's saved by his own mildly psychotic rambling in the form of Hayden pinning a new order to his machine; he sighs as he turns to it, watching out of the corner of his eye as Brett leaves to return to his table.

For a moment, Liam's focussed on his task - making the coffee perfectly, because it's fucking Mrs. Dowdle, and she's nitpicky as shit when she's in a good mood. Today, her wrinkled face is set in a disapproving scowl. She hates Liam. She's never spoken to him, but Liam's got double-pierced ears and half-purple hair, and Mrs. Dowdle wears a cross the size of his palm around her neck. The only thing he could do to make things worse for himself is get a sleeve of tattoos, and honestly, the only thing stopping him is the money involved.

"Etta Dowdle?" he calls, passing the coffee over.

He knows what her next moves will be. She takes it from him, stiffly, trying not to touch him - judgmental old witch - and sets it down gently. Takes the top off, lifts the lid gingerly, sniffs. Inspects the foam. Looks up at Liam. She hates it when he messes it up - and she hates him even more when he gets it right, because then she has nothing to bitch about.

"Double frothed?"

"Yup."

"Three sugars?"

"You know me, Mrs. Dowdle," Liam says boredly. "I lack the strength of spirit to deliberately mess up your coffee."

She sniffs. "Good."

"You're welcome," he calls as she leaves, and Hayden whacks his ass with a rolled-up magazine. "Ow, Jesus, what?"

"Be nice! She's old!"

"She's a fucking bitch!" Liam hisses. "Give her a chance and she'll be back here with an altar, bible, and holy water, trying to exorcise me."

"Look, I'm not arguing against that, because I think you might be right," Hayden says, "but you could get fired."

"God, okay, okay, I'll be nice or whatever."

"I'm not asking you to be nice. It's Monday morning and I know you're not safe for the general population until at least Wednesday." Liam has to smile here, reluctantly, because really, Hayden knows him way too well. "Just... be civil?"

"Alright, okay. Civil. You got it. Just don't hit me with the magazine again."

"Why?" She gets that stricken expression of alarm that usually coincides with her thinking she's somehow hurt him. "Did I hurt you?"

He rolls his eyes. If Hayden had her way, she'd wrap him in bubblewrap and never let him leave their apartment. "No, look," he says, "I like it, okay, you just - it embarrasses me when you do it in public, Hayds, we agreed to keep that shit in the bedroom."

Her face cracks open into a genuine grin, and she laughs loudly enough to get the attention of a few of the customers. "Okay, I'm sorry," she giggles. "I'll save it next time."

"Good, thank you," Liam mutters, and Hayden leaves him with an affectionate swat on the thigh.

The room gets busy again, then wanes; by the time Liam looks up again, he's surprised to find that Brett's still at his table. The plate that held his croissant is devoid even of crumbs, but his coffee has barely been touched.

Liam narrows his eyes. His coffee is good, and he knows that. His desire to confront Brett and demand what's wrong with his fucking mocha is exactly the reason he isn't suited to customer service, either.

Still, as he watches, Brett takes a careful sip of the coffee, then puts it back. And that's when Liam notices - Brett's got a duffel bag and backpack on the bench beside him, as well as his laptop bag. And his hands are shaking - Liam's hearing has been honed to near-perfection after years of listening for his alcoholic dad coming home from the bar, and he can hear Brett's coffee cup rattling against the saucer as he puts it down.

Damn, Liam realises. Is he homeless?

Curiosity killed the cat, but Liam slides out from behind the counter and collects Brett's plate and cutlery slowly. Brett looks at him - almost timidly, like he's afraid of Liam or something.

Stalling? Liam wonders. So we don't kick him out maybe?

They're supposed to kick people out when they're done so that non-paying customers don't leech their power and internet. But Liam doesn't have the heart to do it, so he just collects Brett's dishes and retreats behind the counter. Hayden's standing there, looking bored now that the morning rush is over.

"Is he still drinking that?" Hayden asks.

Liam nods. "I could be totally off-base," he admits, "but I uh, I think he might be homeless. See all the bags?"

Hayden looks, and her expression crumbles sympathetically. "Yeah," she murmurs. "I think you might be right."

"Reckon he's stalling?"

"Probably." She bites her lip. "Let's not kick him out," she says. "I don't know how we're gonna manage, Richard is meant to be back in an hour."

Liam thinks for a moment. "I'll just start making a coffee or something, I dunno," he says. "Say it's for him. That he ordered and shit."

She looks surprised. "You care?"

He narrows his eyes at her. "I do have a heart, you know," he mutters. "Just because it's covered in layers of ice and stone doesn't mean it isn't there."

She smiles. "I know," she says. "I've seen it."

He scowls at her, but she must know it's a front, because that gentle, loving expression stays on her face. It's still there when she goes back to the counter.

Brett finishes his coffee; Liam collects the mug and saucer, resolutely avoiding Brett's eyes. And when their boss comes in, Liam's fucking ready - the "He ordered," slips lazily off his tongue like it couldn't be anything but the truth, and his boss believes him.

Brett looks panicked when Liam brings the coffee - complete with a stupidly cheerful-looking gingerbread man - over. "Tall caramel macchiato for Brett," he says, voice almost sickly sweet with his desire to have Brett play along with him.

Brett looks up - dude looks like a bunny in the headlights. "I-"

He's not gonna get it. Because he's probably stupid but also probably scared. Liam narrows his eyes and wait until comprehension begins to bloom across Brett's face to say, "You are Brett, right?"

"Yeah," Brett says, stumbling over the word. "Yeah, sorry. Listening to music."

"Enjoy," Liam says sweetly, and takes his leave. Seriously. He's gonna need his heart to go back to being icy, because caring about people's welfare is too much fucking work.

Chapter 6

Her mind went blank as Aaliyah stared at the man who had aged more than his share in the past several years. A whirlwind of all the possible scenarios passed through her mind in her attempt of sorting out the shock. A cough beside her brought her back around.

“Sorry, sir,” Aaliyah apologized. “I’m Agent O’Hare and this is my partner Agent Plant.” She pulled out the spare badge and id that Dean had. “We’re here following up about a case from a couple years ago.” She put her badge back in the pocket she pulled it from.

“We understand that you’ve had a history of …” Dean started before being stopped by an upheld hand from the man.

“I know why you’re here,” the man told them. “Come in and I’ll answer any questions you have.”

Aaliyah glanced over to Dean, who gave her a little head tilt. He saw no reason to refuse. She started in first as the man led the way into the kitchen.

“I have thought about finding you for years, Aaliyah,” the man said, opening the fridge and pulled out some bottles of water. “And your brother. I’ve missed so much.”

“I’m sorry,” Dean cut in, coming up along side Aaliyah at the island. “But who are you? I’m not one to sit and have a conversation…”

“If you really are who I think you are,” Aaliyah interrupted. “Why didn’t you try and find us years ago?”

“I’m Casey,” he introduced to Dean. “As for your assumptions, yes. I am your and Xander’s father. I …” Casey looked down at the bottle in his hand, turning it in place. “I got so caught up in hunting, especially when I tried finding your mother. After what the Djinn did… I hunted for a while before stepping away. All the death and injury, I couldn’t do it anymore.”

“So. You just … settled down here save in the city without trying to look for us,” Aaliyah argued. “Some father you are.” She started for the door.

“Liyra, please.”

“Please what?” She spun around. “Please stay and listen while you explain away the past several years you spent hunting? While you went off hunting djinn, wendigos, and everything else that went bump in the night? What was the point?”

“I wanted to make the world save for you two.” Casey’s voice rose in countenance to Aaliyah’s. “Is that a crime?”

“It’s a crime to leave your children unattended.” Aaliyah startled herself with how low her voice went. “It fucks with them in so many ways. Have a nice life; hope it ends up like how my childhood was.” She turned back around and left the house. She reached the impala when the sound of a closing door reached her.

“You okay, kid?” Dean asked as he rounded around the car to the driver’s side.

“I don’t know. It’s good to know he didn’t end up dead.” Aaliyah slid into the front seat. “But to know he didn’t even attempt to find me or Xander when he gave up hunting…How would you feel if your dad did that?”

“Pretty damn awful.” The car turned over. “Let’s get back to the motel.”

Aaliyah stared at the motel door through the windshield, her mind blank. During the drive back she had attempted to form something in way of explanation to tell Xander what she found. Nothing had been forthcoming. She sighed in her way out of the car and to the motel room.

“Son of a…” Xander cut of his curse when Aaliyah stepped in. “Is it true; that he just quit hunting and didn’t give one shit about us?”

Aaliyah glanced over to her brother and nodded. “Like it was something everyone did.” She grabbed a change of clothes and ducked into the bathroom. “Where’s Amanda?”

“Right here,” her college friend called out, followed by a door closing. “Made a food run. What’s up?”

“Let’s get back to Michigan. There’s nothing here. The trail’s been too cold to have found anything of use.” Aaliyah stepped out of the bathroom in her last pair of clean jeans and a clean tee shirt. She picked up the few items of hers that had been scattered in the room and stuffed them into her bag.

“Hold on a sec,” Dean started. “You’re just gonna give up just like that?”

“I started this almost four days ago trying to figure out what happened to my father and brother.” Aaliyah turned to face Dean, a shirt half covered in sludged off skin changer in a hand. She flashed him a thankful smile to him, grateful that he followed her lead. “I found Xander. The trail for our father … not so much.” She finished packing and started for the door, grabbing Amanda’s car keys.

“Aaliyah,” Xander called after her.

“He gave up on us,” Aaliyah fought to keep her voice low. She tossed her bag into the trunk and closed it. “He got out of hunting and settled down in a nice home in town; not a shack like the one we grew up in. I swear I saw a picture of him with a couple other people; family people, Xander.”

“Then let him have that life,” Xander told her, putting a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Let him know that we’re doing fine and won’t know how well we’re doing. Speaking of which…” The motel door opened before Dean and Amanda emerged. “I wanna know what you’re up to.”

“I’ll make sure she calls you every week,” Amanda assured him. “And that she sends out a graduation invite to you.”

“You’ll keep me in the loop as well,” Dean requested. “And no more hunts.”

“I promise to the first; and only if they’re local,” Aaliyah compromised. “Sides, can’t be calling you all the time when a case pops up.” She flashed him a smile.

“You’d make a good hunter,” Dean told her.

“Thanks. I did have help with you and Amanda.”

“Glad that I don’t have to hide that part from you anymore,” Amanda commented. “We gotta get going if we’re to get back to Michigan in time for Monday class.”

Aaliyah shared a hug with Xander before turning to Dean. “You keep my number, Winchester.”

“Wouldn’t lose it for the world.”

Two Years Later

Aaliyah looked in the mirror and adjusted her cap and tassel. She had attempted to keep what little she had for breakfast from ending up in the toilet. She overestimated the hunt time just a little. It had been sheer luck Aaliyah thought ahead in taking her graduation items with her on the hunt. Aaliyah settled for how her commencement sat against her body, and left the restroom and jogged over to where her group of students had gathered for the processional. She ignored the subtle glances toward her. There hadn’t been time for a full blown make up coverage; just enough to hide the bandages and mask the small scratches. She made it to her seat and fought off dozing off. The speeches dragged on and her chin dropped to her chest. Someone nudged her awake. Startled, Aaliyah jumped up as the rest of her row stood.

She followed along and merged into the queue that led up the stage. With each name announced came cheers from around the stadium; family and friends of each graduate. Aaliyah doubted that there was anyone in the crowd for her; even when she told Xander and Dean about it. The line before Aaliyah dwindled down to it was just her standing before the stairs that led onto the stage.

“Aaliyah Fisher,” her name was announced.

The student behind Aaliyah nudged her. Her mind clicked that she had been called and moved her feet. There was polite applause from the facility members on stage and scattered throughout the stadium. The loudest cheers had nearly been drowned out if it hadn’t been for the air horn and a large cardboard sign held up that read in bold letters: Way to Go Win-chester. Aaliyah fought against the tilt her head wanted to take as she stepped up and accepted her degree with a handshake. She waved up toward the sign as she stepped off the stage and back down into the seats.

She joined her graduating class in the sitting area and waited for the last of the students. When the last had taken their seat and the president stepped forward and presented to the gathered crowd the graduating class of 2005. Aaliyah moved her tassel over and smiled. The processional music started playing and the first of the facility descended from the stage. After them down the main aisle started the students.

Aaliyah closed the file folder and dropped it into the pile of other completed files. She had been lucky and had gotten a job in nursing in the first few months after graduating. The other nurses and doctors that were on staff at the local hospital seemed to have welcomed her well enough. Aaliyah sensed that there were things they were holding back. She glanced over at the clock and mentally checked when the full moon rose that night. The radio at the nurse’s station startled Aaliyah in its crackle to life. With the exception of a drunk being carried in by their friends, the night’s shift had been rather quiet.

“Garden City, this is Tommy with Bus 4 coming in with a white male in his mid-twenties with apparent wild animal maul wounds. ETA ten minutes.”

“Copy that, Tommy,” Aaliyah responded as the ER staff started their organized chaotic prep for the incoming ambulance.

She rushed out to meet the ambulance as it rolled up. It had been the one thing she had managed to convince the staff letting her do. Aaliyah figured with her limited knowledge of things that went bump in the night, she would be able to treat the wounds better than her co-workers. The back door opened and the EMTs jumped out. She rushed over as the gurney wheels hit the ground and scanned the wounds as her mind raced through all the potential animals that may have mauled the guy. Most of it was on the left side of the torso, like the animal had gone for the heart. Werewolf attack. Aaliyah held in a sigh. Sure, they might be able to keep the poor bastard from dying, but there was a pretty good chance of him being infected.

Aaliyah worked her way to the man’s head, wanting to make sure she was the only one to see any first signs and symptoms of the werewolf infection. She didn’t want to know what the attending doctor and gaggle of nurses would do – short of freak and run – once those started. Keeping an eye on the monitors, Aaliyah swore she saw a twitch of a finger from the patient.

A flutter of a closed eye. Her heart threatened to escape her chest. Could have been his body just doing body things.

A shoulder rolled in just a way Aaliyah would have missed if she hadn’t been paying attention. He was conscious and waiting for the opportune moment to strike out.

Aaliyah leaned down to his ear. “I wouldn’t do that, if I were you,” she whispered. “Not with all these hunters here.”

A low growl rumbled in his throat. “There’s no hunters here.”

Aaliyah reached up from her shoe and placed a small silver blade to the man’s neck. He hissed from the contact. “If there’s no hunters here, how’d I know about using a silver blade against you?” There was something off if he knew about hunters. Aaliyah glanced up over to the half patched up wounds, her mind working.

“There’s some wounds on his leg that are a month old,” one of her fellow nurses pointed out.

He was already a werewolf.

“You’re all going to be either dead or werewolves before the night’s done,” he told Aaliyah.

She slipped her blade back in her shoe before moving to grab the smallest needle she could hide in a hand. Aaliyah would have to do it quick as possible. The man was starting to move more, which would either help or hinder her. Pulling the plunger up in the needle in her hand, Aaliyah threaded her way down to his feet and grabbed one just as he started thrashing against the staff. She kept hold with her free hand and stuck the needle between two toes, forcing herself to keep her eyes on his face. Guilt seeped in as she watched him die. She took an oath to save people in the medical field. Yet … the man was a threat as a werewolf and by injecting air into his blood stream, Aaliyah saved more people if she allowed him to live.

She slipped away, putting the used needle into the biohazard box as she went. The rest of the team struggled to revive him even as the monitors and machines argued otherwise. Round two with a werewolf and she survived again. It was a little less life threatening compared to the first, yet she had been the one to give the killing blow.

“There’s gonna be times where we’re not gonna save ‘em all,” the doctor told Aaliyah. “Don’t be so hard on yourself.”

She did a double look at him as her mind caught up to the present. “Oh, I know. I’m going out for some air.”

At a previous job I had good health insurance but adding my husband was costly so we got him BCBS IL through a local insurance agent. He is not the type to go to the doctor very often so a very basic plan is what we got him. It started out only being $160 for 3 months; now today I received a letter that it will be going up to $250 for 3 months. I have changed jobs and kept my insurance for awhile through Cobra but eventually found different coverage because the Cobra was so high in cost. But of course it has went up to almost $300 a month.
