I don’t know if anyone else realizes this but NPMD is EXTREMELY Heathers coded!!! The costumes, the lighting, the NAMES…. I’m freakin out man! And I’ve been listening to the soundtrack like a maniac (we all have probably) and I realized that when Max is alive the music has a very 70’s/80’s vibe to it, and the vocabulary used by the rest of the “students” is all 80’s lingo. But when he dies it WILDLY switches to 90’s/00’s/10’s! And you’re like “yeah so what they changed the style cause he dies. A lot of musicals do” BUT IM NOT DONE REALIZING SHIT YET!!!

When we see Max on stage, everyone is not only terrified, but they change their way of speaking instinctively/ immediately. And when he dies, everyone relaxes and speaks like real people in the modern age. When his ghost is rumored to be haunting Hatchetfeild, everyone switches again.

Max has psychology trained all of Hatchetfeild to be sub-characters in HIS 80’s high school musical cliché!

But why? Because he was probably trained by his parents (more than likely divorced) to think that “the 80’s were a better time”, or “things were easier back then. Jocks rule, and everyone else was a literal loser”. Max isn’t just a monster, he’s a trained monster.

But, Max isn’t always a monster, especially when talking to Grace. Because she probably reminds him of his mother in old pictures (not to mention that Grace is the only girl in school that gives him pushback, but that’s a conversation for a different day). And in the Waylon house, when Max’s entire ideology is questioned, he backs down and his vocabulary modernizes. However when he dies and goes into the black and white, the Lords in Black make that 80’s main character personality consume him. His “movie” is no longer an 80’s rom-com, it’s an 80’s horror film, BUT HE STILL HAS TO BE THE MAIN CHARACTER.

All this to say, I love this addition to Hatchfield and I can’t wait to see when happens next 😍
