First Gen Black Dragons Music HCs (+Draken, Mikey, and Baji)
a/n: just did this for fun, but then i got carried away. i have to dump this wall of text somewhere haha. @phen0l hope you don't mind me tagging you!
Tumblr media
Takeomi feels like the sort of person to listen to old punk/rock ballads when he was a teenager, but the kind of rock ballads your-dad-listens-to kinda vibes, like Aerosmith and The Street Beats. I'm making him into such an old man (but he is lmao).
Benkei gives me such a strong vibe that he listens to a lot of good and funky 90s-2000s Japanese hip-hop and old school rap. He's the sort of person that also knows some underground artists that aren't as popular as Buddha Brand and Scha Dara Parr. He probably works out with loud music too.
Wakasa is actually hard to tell :T He feels like a picky listener, like it's easy for him to drop a song when there's something about the mood that doesn't hit right for him. If Benkei is the type to listen to all the songs of an album, Waka's the type to pick one or two songs he might like and skip the rest. Idk why I get the feeling that he has similar preferences with Benkei for some reason (but I suppose I see this more narrative-wise, like two polar opposites having one shared interest kind of thing). If there's an artist that comes to my mind, it’s ECD. I don't think he likes Scha Dara Parr, which upsets Benkei. Maybe they make up over Microphone Pager or sumn.
When it comes to Shinichiro, he feels like the sort of person that goes with anything his friends listen/recommend to him or what's playing on the radio that day while he works, but he has never had an organized playlist. Ever. If you ask him for a recommendation, he'll always reference someone else who can give a better recommendation than him. If he goes out to karaoke, he will choose some relatable song about heartbreak or pining. Yes, he's that sappy friend in karaoke night. It's amusing for awhile until one of his friends have to probably pull him away from the mic at some point because he's not letting up and it's getting annoying.
Tumblr media
Bonus 1: Shinichiro attempting to sing an offbeat version of Miki Matsubara's Stay With Me from a rejection. Everyone's tired, but they let him have his moment. He gets sore throat for trying (and failing) to hit those high notes. Shin, please stop hurting yourself lol.
Bonus 2: I know Draken isn't supposed to be here, but he gives me a feeling that he's a fan of Nujabes. That's it, that's all.
Bonus 3: Mikey grew up on Asian Kung-Fu Generation. But he can just recall some tunes of the band's songs because Shinichiro used to like listening to them.
Bonus 4: Sex Machineguns feels like the kind of J-metal band Baji would listen to so he could get pumped up over something.
Did I mistake Kayo Suspense Gekijyou from his character info for the song from Sex Machineguns than the actual TV show like a dumbass? Yes.

Another Week - I Fight Dragons
In the window – I could swear I've seen her Was it real though? She's a disappearer So much I don't know That gets clearer every day.
Was I dreaming? Did it really happen? Could the whole thing be my imagination? I can't stop seeing her reflection everywhere..
Who’s Theme - Nujabes
Take me,   To your place,  Soften your breathing,  And become the wind.  Take me , To where you are , Passing through time , My heart unravels .
Kamisama Hajimemashita - Hanae
Now, a girl gets a start on her day, As she sighs you can hear, the moan of a violin. She loves the taste of, the sweetest cherries.
It was me before I had met you, I have never felt this way before. In your beautiful eyes I see, contempt held for me and then I must, Continue to find my way home. You abandoned me by that bus stop.
God, do you hear me?
I'd really like to be a bad girl, I'm tired of pretending to be good, So please just hear my prayer, I promise that my intentions are pure, So let me be a bad girl just for now. And wear my skirt a little too short, I'll be good after this, This weekend is going to be nice, God in heaven, it's already starting.
I Won’t Say I’m in Love - Susan Egan
I thought my heart had learned its lesson? It feels so good when you start out. My head is screaming "Get a grip girl”, Unless you're dying to cry your heart out.
Girl you can't deny it, Who you are is how you're feeling. Baby we're not buying, Hon, we saw you hit the ceiling. Face it like a grown-up, When you gonna own up that you got got got it bad?
(Most of Kirei’s songs have a hint of melancholy to them since that’s a huge emotion that makes up Kirei.)

11:A song that you never get tired of, 12:A song from your preteen years
11) This answer took me so fucking long because there’s a lot I could pick from spanning many genres but I decided on Imaginary Folklore by Nujabes ft Clammbon because it’s lovely and I always enjoy hearing it.
12) For whatever reason Rock DJ by Robbie Williams was the first thing that came to mind. Actually I know why it’s because I was hoping someone was ask the duet question and Kids ft. Kylie Minogue is 100% my choice for that.

Day 3
Here I am back again. This evening's topic is something I can't quite wrap my head about, however funny it sounds. It's something I probably shouldn’t do, but I can't help myself. I was thinking about human relationships and love and the longing. How do you know you love someone? How do you know you are with the right person? How do you tell the difference between the artistic vision of people who tell about their relationships and reality? I know people always say "well, you would just know", but I have never in my life felt like I know anything at all. It's going to be something like 8 years soon, and we never once had an anniversary. There was always something that didn't fit or we didn't fit or we just forgot. Is this good? Is this bad? Am I supposed to feel like this? The thing is, I am not sure he knows the answers to the questions above either. I certainly wasn't the first choice for him, and he was tired of being alone by the time we met. And I really don't know how much of his love after all those years is appreciation, respect and companionship, and how much is the feeling itself. Sometimes I feel being cheated out of something important - but I can't tell exactly what. Marriage? Do I want marriage? What is marriage? Growing up I was told that there is one thing for certain that I must achieve: I should be independent. At the same time, I feel that I should be independent only up to the point where I get married and simply accept that providing for me and caring for me is someone else's job. How do you do that? I mean, I certainly don't judge or say it shouldn't be this way. But how do you do that? I could never trust anyone enough to just say- let's do it. Or maybe I could, I just never met the right person? Do I need another person at all? Having this mess of fear, headache, anxiety, depression, horror and numbness in my head, I feel I can't look at things objectively. Maybe having a goal in life helps people deal with such things - if your goal is to have a baby and raise an adult out of it, there is just so much you can do. I don't have any goal or desperate wish and I feel I keep existing as best as I can, which frankly leaves a lot of options. How do you tell a person you are not loved enough? Or is it just a thought that comes when you are empty anyway and sort of just look around for things to pick on to give you some sort of feeling you are alive? He often says "it's too much". I often feel it's not enough. music: haruka nakamura - lamp (feat. Nujabes)

My Music Rankings (2/15/19)
Let’s try this again. Hi. Nice to meet you. This is a song ranking post
Let us get some honorable mentions up in here first:
Deal with the devil by Tia ( https://open.spotify.com/track/2qEIVphvwMEkE35CXxdWAT?si=2ZHB9PK8SduIm3wDPv5Pxg ) - I can’t unsee Kakegurui’s opening when hearing this, which is a good thing. A very fun song.
[some text I can’t copy-paste] by PASSEPIED ( https://open.spotify.com/track/3YRkEWUsxgcv0TXunuFXaG?si=4VzYHLBlQeGiw5THs2bSrA ) - Always boosts my energy. Love getting this one during a bike ride.
Reactive Factory: Work It Out by SEGA ( https://open.spotify.com/track/1zJBs1tPQAc0IJ5aSHVnjX?si=nww_-g8NTgWie1F9tt9thw ) - Song from Sonic R. It has the same charm that the whole OST has, but oddly enough, it’s also is one of the most inspiring video-game songs I’ve heard, and I really like it for that.
Rude Buster by Toby Fox ( https://open.spotify.com/track/322mgWaD4DetiHmoDVlwWc?si=SoDkJjx7RnuFFNaSqphxOQ ) - It’s Toby Fox
Field of Hopes and Dreams by Toby Fox ( https://open.spotify.com/track/2W90IO8eRnFg1qsPunKm9B?si=YxbGoJzuRky4qVuF7KId-Q ) - It’s Toby Fox
Light on the Land by Nujabes ( https://open.spotify.com/track/2rUaktaAxshyPzIdAKzk1Y?si=7qKXNsFfTGagN41Zkii6RQ ) - It’s Nujabes. Good for long nights.
Osaka by Magic Circuit & Nyanners ( https://open.spotify.com/track/4vt9IeeqPgmCh5E34rlJe0?si=_XXb1Y7_ToWF_2aYTQr9Xg ) - There’s is not one part of this song I don’t enjoy. The lyrics, the singing, the tone, the notes, everything. This can easily jump into the ranks soon.
Current Top 10 Pieces of Music of All Time Of the Month:
10: [some text I can’t copy-paste] by ORESAMA ( https://open.spotify.com/track/1u3VGSAE8RfSGS4u0BPyRh?si=VGGjQKQmSc6Y1jdtd5rBzA ) - This song is catchy and has so much personality... Plus, I can’t help think of Kirby and the Crystal Shards when I hear it, which is a great thing.
9: Darling by Tsundere Alley ( https://open.spotify.com/track/4q3vvu59rykZqQiOVW0lcj?si=MNwdqQD1QXuFqtBe7_vIUg ) - What am I hearing and why do I like it so much?...
8: Feather by Nujabes ( https://open.spotify.com/track/2ej1A2Ze6P2EOW7KfIosZR?si=nUB6iAifSMCMY0Gv93v-Fw ) - It’s Nujabes
7. Believe in Myself by AmaLee ( https://open.spotify.com/track/541NKK4h7UJgbdMbaccdiC?si=Y-m5lOD4QpSkpdx0IaVgSA ) - Boost your confidence. This song is an easy way to get through some hard days.
6: Life Will Change (P5) by AmaLee & Atlus ( https://open.spotify.com/track/6EC3QOcBWE1AMg6xdYMskY?si=5zbzDk0CRNOnIQYK_gq8pQ ) - My favorite song in Persona 5. One of the only songs that I’ll almost always sing in its entirety when I hear it (alone, of course). AmaLee is a legendary cover-artist.
5. Asteroid by GARNiDELiA ( https://open.spotify.com/track/28PF5hmg7Gc8s1dXe2Cqnp?si=z6NyTGXZQnyHIwoaEIrAXw ) - A classic for me at this point. On good days, it’s an enjoyable, good song. On bad days, the desperate tone of the song makes it quite more intense for me. Love it.
4. Bullet Waiting for Me (James Landino Remix) by Nikki Simmons (  https://open.spotify.com/track/7zPc0e7TrM8SyBa8753Kvd?si=HuWwLJ7FTOC5H3JtlGJ2dQ ) - A lovely song. A tad bit short.
3. Witch by Magic Circuit & Nyanners ( https://open.spotify.com/track/0xZWbHZcY41nnsDiyBVxUF?si=GrHojVTvSryMA-5r5xqXBQ ) - Witch is something incredibly special to me. The first time I heard this song was while I was mowing the lawn and had Spotify on some random-setting. When the singer began to sing, I felt very urged to hit the skip button and move on to the next song. But I gave the song a chance. With every listen since then, I liked the song more until I started to love it. At first, I did not understand the song’s meaning; I did not notice the parts of the song that now make me love it. The lyrics also hit me deep. Regardless of my mood, this song can make me teary 50% of the time. Also, this song is sung by Nyanners!!
2.Colorful World by Seira Kariya ( https://open.spotify.com/track/4vQIktmFEmQAfxxuZHGPEf?si=9NQs53FMRWa7XbJWwVlE0A ) - An absolute banger. One of the best songs that I’ve ever heard, for sure. It just forces joy upon you.
1: Wandering by A_rival ( https://open.spotify.com/track/5GyQ9UXSXhzmNJPhAQYYTY?si=w0X8YQnLQ5SYEgWcxTJ1PA ) - A great song that I refuse to ever get tired of. I will never not sing this while driving.
What absolutely shocking results. Were you as enticed as I was? Now, here’s some exclusive commentary on these results:
I can clearly distinguish the different tiers/levels in these rankings, levels that I don’t see any of the songs moving easily to or from. 9, 10 and every song not on this list that I like are in their own “enjoyable” tier. They’re nice. Then, we have 6, 7 and 8 in a tier above them. I don’t see many songs under this tier that I can see myself loving more than something like Feather or Life Will Change. That’s a challenge. Above that is 4 and 5. The songs in this tier or better are what I consider legendary songs, songs that I do not see myself ever getting tired of or forgetting about. However, there’s a clear distinction between 4 & 5 and 1,2&3. This last tier are SSS-tier songs, unforgettable classics that I will always love and be excited to hear come up, whether I’m driving, biking or just listening the music.
Now onto comments on specific songs. Bullet Waiting for Me just barely out-ranked Asteroid. This was a song that came out of nowhere and became an instant favorite of mine. However, I could see it falling down the ranks based on how short the song is relative to how long I want the song to be. For now, I placed it where I think it should be, but we’ll see in the future if that changes.
Witch is by-far the song that I am most emotionally invested in. I love it so much, and yet, I don’t consider it do be at the same level as Colorful World and Wandering... yet.. I definitely can see my feelings on this song relative to the others change as time goes on.. But for now, I see both Colorful World and Wandering to be perfect songs, no blemishes. I wouldn’t say the same about Witch, even if I love it. We’ll see though.
While Colorful World may just be the happiest song I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing, Wandering has been and continues to be the most absolute classic for me. Colorful World causes immense joy, but Wandering makes me want to sing as loud as I can, something no other song causes me to do.
Well, that’s it! Hope you enjoyed some of this music and wasting your time! Until next time.

【Japan Official Fanclub Magazine Vol.2】BTS My Biography – Suga’s part
From a mischievous child to a young boy that loves to read
Born in Daegu, South Korea’s 3rd biggest city, which is located in the south. I lived there until I came to Seoul. I was just an ordinary child, I always liked to mess around. So, the teacher in nursery didn’t really like me (laughs). I remember that I always got told off “it’s dangerous!” I liked sports and I was especially good at running. From primary school to high school, I often got chosen to participate in the relay race. And I was above average in studying.
When I was a child, I really liked to go out to play with my friends. But as I grew up, I wasn’t that fond of going out to play. Even when I went out to play, we just met in the park, there were nothing to do though. I didn’t like that, so I usually stayed at home along on the weekends. My mother said: “you should go out to see your friends sometimes.” (laughs)
I liked to collect, so I collected a lot of books when I was a child. Because at the time, I wanted to be cultivated, I wanted to pretend that I’m civilized. So, I read many grown up novels, poetry anthology, literary works and news articles which didn’t suit me… I read all genres of books. I don’t know why but from middle school onwards, I started to have the habit of reading from the back page. Now, I would read books sometimes. My reading speed is quick because I read chunks of writings.
First love in primary school… I honestly don’t have any memories about that. Unlike Seoul, the place I live in is quite conservative. Especially in my school, it’s rare to see boys talking to girls. Even being next to a girl made me shy, I didn’t even say a thing.
Encountered Hip-Hop Started to compose music in middle school
I became interested in music when I was in 5th grade of middle school, I saw the Korean artist Stony Skunk’s performance on TV. At the time, the genre Ballad was in its prime. If 18 teams were on a music show, 10 would be ballad groups, 5 would be idol groups and the remaining 3 would be other genres, Stony Skunk was one of the 3. Stony Skunk was really cool, their style is so different from the other groups. I’ve never been interested in music before that, but under the influence of Stony Skunk, I started to listen to Hip-Hop and Reggae music. I was also influenced by Epik High. MP3 players were getting popular at the time but I bought a Panasonic CD player and listened to music with that.
That’s how I started to listen to music, and at the same time I started to write song as well. No one told me to do it, but I just felt like I should write something. I started to write rap lyrics in primary school and started to compose music in middle school. At the time, no one around me liked Hip-Hop. Although Hip-Hop is getting popular again in Korea but when I encountered Hip-Hop, it was a genre that was popular from a long time ago. You probably couldn’t find anyone who raps on the street, apart from me. My friends complained when I sang rap songs in the karaoke room. You know there’re those special hand gestures in Hip-Hop, I got laughed at because I did those gestures.
Despite all of that, I continued to like Hip-Hop. I got to perform on the stage for the first time in 2nd of middle school. I performed Dynamic Duo’s ‘Go Back’ with my friends. I don’t like standing in front of many people but I just felt like I had to do it. I wanted to show off the rap that I’ve been practicing, although I wasn’t that great (laughs). Actually, I wanted to attend an arts high school, so I even produced classical music. But arts high school is too expensive so I attended an ordinary high school. I said to my father, “I’ve made enough music, I’ll study properly when I’m in high school.” But I never kept my promise (laughs).
Joined an underground crew in hometown, started to work as an underground rapper
I produced music in middle school for self-satisfaction, and I made songs in a hobby level. But after I changed the MIDI equipment, I started to make music properly. When I was in 1st grade of high school, I made a person to listen to my song, he was a teacher to me and he really liked it. Then he introduced me to a Hip-Hop crew called ’D-Town’ and I joined in. That song had a New Age music feeling to it but the Hip-Hop beats were like Nujabes. For your information, the teacher that acknowledged me studied in Berklee College of Music and now he’s a music director for movies. After I joined the crew, I started to learn rap properly. Although I’ve been rapping since primary school but since no one around me raps, so I always thought I was the best (laughs).
This is how I started my underground activities in Daegu. It also made me realize that working in the underground scene is difficult to make a living. The hyungs that I worked with was 10 years older than me, there were even people over 30 years old. They had to work part-time along with making music, it looked so tiring. I really hated the fact that it was difficult to gather 100 audience when we try to hold a live performance. I thought “if I succeed, can I be the bridge between mainstream music and underground music?” There are many people that makes great music in the underground scene, so I thought when I become famous, I’ll give them a better environment to work in and I want to let the world hear my hyungs’ music.
And at the same time, I heard that BigHit Entertainment was holding an audition in Daegu. I only knew that producer Bang Shi Hyuk established the company but I still auditioned. The next day, I got the notice that I passed the audition. Later, someone told me that when he saw me, he immediately gave me a pass. Even though my rapping wasn’t really good at the time (laughs).
Came to Seoul, became a trainee Ran counter to his (original) intention?!
I can still clearly remember the day that I came to Seoul, 7th November 2010, when I was in 2nd grade of high school. When I joined the company, my original intention wasn’t to become a rapper, I wanted to become a producer. So, I thought I didn’t need to dance, and I can leave rapping to those that are good at it. I thought I only need to be a producer. But that wasn’t the case (laughs). At the time, the company wanted to debut a group consists of rappers, rather than an idol group. However, the plan changed at the end. The members at the time were Rap Monster, J-Hope and I. Including Supreme Boi, i11evn hyung who’s currently working in the underground scene, and IRON hyung, who was one of the finalists in 'Show Me The Money 3’. I think if we debuted like that, our rapping would be outstanding but we would probably have failed (laughs).
Rapper & Producer Suga’s future goals
I’m able to walk on the path of music, it’s because of my brother, who’s 4 years older than me. Under my influence, my brother started to like Hip-Hop too. No one supported me in my family when I went to audition, except for my brother. They don’t approve of making music. My relatives even said to me: “what can you achieve from making music, just study properly.” So, I could only share my songs with my brother, he was my only listener. And I told my brother first when I passed the audition. We have a good relationship just like friends. I don’t usually drink but I drink a bit with my brother. Of course, my family support me now. The relatives that advised me to study even came to ask for my autograph (laughs).
I’ve been thinking lately that I want to be active as a producer. I’m not ambitious about being in the center, I just want to make music. I’m not interested in the entertainment industry, others want to either act or be on variety shows, but I don’t (laughs). Above all, I think the most important for BTS right now is to achieve #1 in Korea and Japan. And, I want to become the best rapper, the best producer. I don’t know how long it will take to achieve that but I’m going to give it a go.

you know what i find the gayest song i ever had on my pc? i think it’s ‘glaring dream’ from gravitation. strange thing that it’s a really positive one and i still like it. i keep it since 2002 (in case you had no idea i’ve lived long enough, yes))))
but i love that period and when artists made op’s and ed’s, i say artists but they also do those nowadays, i’m just more indifferent and they don’t touch my heart anymore, i suppose.
i remember how naruto brought me sambomaster “seishun.. something..”, they also have many other great songs. i still have captain straydum, it has a funny title mountain go go XDDD
or back in bleach times i found out for myself music by home made kazoku, happened ages ago, but i still like them. also there was one track by Takacha which i loved, i still follow him on twitter and happy to know he’s still doing music and takes parts in events. or asian kung-fu generation. come on.
for example tracks from macross plus with sharon apple make me remember the time we rented (or someone brought) the cd, but the files were corrupted, so at that time i haven’t seen the full macross plus. i was so affected by the whole thing that i drew sharon on my wallpaper (don’t think i did a bad job, i think i still have the sketch from those times and can dig it out). but it’s nice that music brings some memories!! unlike these times with no unlimited internet i now have seen not one sharon apple)))
also, i don’t own those anymore but i think one of the greatest things ever done with composed music in anime is from ‘nana’. actually, i dislike the anime itself, i suppose many fans had outrages about it never being finished? but the music was great, tsuchiya anna and that other singer, hell my memory is bad. but who can forget ‘rose’? i find they did a great job bringing great music and individuality of both singers that corresponded with characters. but i knew that shoujo isn’t my thing at all ahahaah, i keep up with only few shoujo titles since then.
it’s actually pretty interesting through that to find ppl or when your loved bands do music for anime. like after xxxholic i discovered suga shikao for myself. or with d.gray-man (the first one) i found june, he had few releases and later became a producer. with yamato nadesico shichi henge i discovered kiyoharu, the show i still find awful XDDD but some things from him i listen even to this day.also at the time i listened to 12012 they were asked to do romeo x juliet ed (i doubt you saw but whatever) it was one of their gayest songs ever so not like their music at all, or when gazette fans went into wut when they did an op? for kuroshitsuji. bad memory, bad.
but when it comes to osts yoko kanno is like one of my top fav at all times. her gits compositions and collabs are fantastic, not to mention bebop. damn. if you never saw her live they had when they played bebop music, yo, it’s really fun!! that video is precious. when bebop op tank! played, i never skipped, not even once, because it’s just ageless and i can never get tired of it. just 1,2,3 let’s jam. i usually skip after a while but never with this one. i still think it’s one of the greatest openings of all time. no really, go watch that kanno small concert, or if you have bakabt account just d/l it from there, it’s freeleech. but she did a lot and every show was not the same? right? it’s amazing how different they are, but all are hard to forget.
i think it’s cool when music can bring like the whole spirit of animation to a new level, it’s not something generic, but a unique sound you’ll be able to recognize anytime. remember samurai champloo? loss of nujabes is a great loss to the whole music world, but he made this show sound unique.
with stuff like gits or ergo proxy i realized i also like ambient futuristic stuff. but whenever i mention ergo proxy i always start singing come and saaaaaaaaaaaaaaave meeeeeeeeeeee (you might have seen it in my tags some day XDDD) because that op song by monoral is also ageless.
oh, once again a find thanks to anime - boom boom satellites, because they did xam’d op which has like a really neat title “shut up and explode”, still keep it on my music list, so upbeat. i’m actually going through music and manga folders just to delete stuff i don’t give a slightest damn about to free some space to d/l this show again lollll.
thanks to ookiku furikabutte for example i discovered base ball bear (their vocalist is like never aging too, it seems))) but they’re fun. and the show is still precious. i never found it as upbeat as nowadays sports anime that are like so hype it’s kinda tiring, but it gave a really nice message and i think ppl who missed it should give it a chance.
i’d like to say the same about other artist i discovered thanks to anime, which is mell who performed “red fraction” in black lagoon. but she’s been inactive since ‘13, yet i liked her. and black lagoon itself was a show of its own, so dramatic, i think what i like is that it had many bad stuff happening, no let’s be happy together ending in your average show. i wish they’d do another season of it, since manga is ongoing, even though it’s been through a lot.
Ok, I’ll be going now, since I need to finish some stuff as well. Who actually read this post is precious.

Exercise #3
After reading Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl,”  write a scene that reads like a list of directions for how to do something i.e. fix a bike, make a cake, whatever you like. Notice how Kincaid starts with a verb: “wash,” “eat,” “grow” and more rarely “I” and “you.” Come up with your own take on her style. Add the commentary/questions of the person getting these directions, as she does in italics, so that the scene has two characters.
Some things to consider when writing: how does Kincaid’s list of directions include the characters’ emotional conflict? How does Kincaid work both characters’ feelings into what is otherwise just a set of rules of how to be a “girl”? Try to do this in your own scene.
Another idea: feel free to write your own version of “Girl,” an alternative version called “Boy,” or any take on this theme: “Student,” “Sister,” “Employee” etc.

How To Be A Black Man In America
By Tiffany
Don’t hang out with crowds. Crowds mean danger. Better yet, crowds mean you're up to no good. Don’t wear a hoodie even if it’s cold outside because we all know what happens to young black boys who wear hoodies. Don’t associate with those loudmouthed boys from school because they won’t amount to nothing with their obnoxious music and their shameful way of speaking. Don’t look guilty when in front of the police. By guilty, don’t have that fearful look in your eyes. Don’t stay too long in a high-class store, the cashier might think you are up to no good. But I have the money to buy those clothes. Who cares if you have the money or not? They don't. Whenever you encounter a situation, Don’t run. Running means guilt. Don’t come home too late. They might think you are up to no good. Don’t wear jeans and a bandana when you are outside. You know what they will think when they see you. Always look busy when outside. The more occupied you are, the better the chances of survival. Never talk back to the police. You know they are just dying to shoot a young unarmed black man. What if I’m innocent? How many times do I have to tell you? They don’t care if your innocent or not. Mind your business everywhere you go. Most people mind their business and they still get shot at.  They weren’t minding their business hard enough. Stay in school so you can go on to college. Who can say anything to a black man with a college degree? And last but not least, never ever be in the wrong place at the wrong time. If so, you only have two options. Dead or Jail.

FRIEND
by Arthur
Wake up in the morning 7:30 Monday to Fridays just so you tell her Good Morning have great day today and on Saturdays and Sundays it's 8; go to school and have a okay day and wait for her to text you; when she asks to call you always say yes because you don't want to make it seem you don't have time for her; wait for her to tell you about her day first before you start talking; never sound any different so she doesn't needlessly worry about you, when she does always have a white lie ready; shouldn't i just tell her the truth? You are but you can’t tell the whole truth because her problems are worse and you can't have her worrying for you; have some joke ready to change the mood when it seems that the conversation is getting dark and gloomy; bring up the good times here and there so that she can reminisce and cheer up; never ask her the question what is she doing and never bring up what work you have to do; if she does ask tell her you will do it another time or you did it already because she will find any way to leave so you can do it; never remind her of the time so that the call will not end; always notice the tiredness in her voice and her sighs so you can remind her when to sleep; but wasn't I not supposed to remind her of the time? Yes but you cannot be the reason she is tired tomorrow and doesn't get up to go to school. Always listen to her dreams and never contain your excitement for them because she does the same for you. Only get angry when she speaks bad about herself or you feel as if she is going down a bad path; never ever judge her because she is a human being and we all make mistakes; get those thoughts about being with her out of your head because it will never happen; don't tell her you have them either, she already knows and she will not share them back; always smile when she remembers things you did together because it makes you happy; always brag when you win a game with her so she gets mad and try her hardest; try not to show you are a sore loser because she is going to gloat in your face; WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T SUCK YOUR TEETH WHEN SHE MENTIONS HIM; why the hell shouldn't I am i not angry?; you are but you getting angry will make her not speak to you about her problems; hold your tongue and listen to her remember everything about him to the tiniest details; listen to her voice change into a sad voice when she mentions their good times; hear her laugh when she mentions their funny times; don't believe her when she snaps out of it and tells you she doesn't love him; why not? Come on we both know she is lying to spare your feelings; last but not least when she tells you she loves you never take it romantically because you will not only hurt you but also her because she isn't looking for a partner from you she is looking for a friend.
Woman.
by Kaniz
Wake up and recognize your first conscious breath as the first blessing of the day. Start your morning off with a stack of warm pancakes and remember to have fresh fruit on the side. Wash off your ideas of failure from the day before and wear renewed determination around your neck. There is a book waiting to be picked up by you, waiting for you to take everything it is able to give. Pick it up and read it. And remember that a well-educated woman is only the most dangerous kind. What if I have my own things to say? Brew a warm cup of tea: add some cardamoms, a bay leaf or two, ginger, and a healthy sprinkle of your favorite tea leaves. Sit by a window with the most sunlight and wait to see what falls from the tips of your fingers. Give yourself to your pen and watch as the pages bleed with your voice. What if they don’t like what I have to say? Say it again, and again, and again, until you realize that your truths are louder than those too scared to accept them. Declare that you are happy in your wholeness, love and be loved in return by your own reflection. What a blessing it is to belong to yourself. How do I stay honest? Allow yourself to break when the time comes. Remember that the cracks in your soul are now new spaces for growth, for life. Smile at every stranger whose soul you seem to recognize, maybe they’ll introduce you to the next part of yourself. How do I change the world? Speak, darling. Your words are bigger than you, bigger than this mold they will try to fit you in. You were born with your mother’s fire, and her mother before her, and her mother before her. Do not feel alone in moments of weakness, but instead remember the stories of the generations before you and find your strength in the blood that flows through your veins. You are here to be a beautiful rebellion.
Melanin.
By Niles
Walk in your power, but not too strongly. Make it clear that you will not be underestimated, but peacefully. Raise your arms up high, but slowly, so it doesn’t seem as if you’re reaching for a weapon. Respectfully declare that you are reaching for your drivers license and that being black in America isn’t a crime. Tell the cops that they are part of the problem, and the system won’t change until they do. Wait patiently and graciously as the officers do their part to keep us safe. Drive away with a ticket in hand and thank the officers for their lenience and kindness. Use the cotton of your ancestors to plug the bullet holes in your torso so you don’t bleed out. When you get home, and your children greet you with love and colloquialisms remind them that the corporate job you hold doesn’t allow for “yo”s and “bro”s, and that professionalism and AAE do not intersect as one is broken and the other whole. If they look wounded, do not offer comfort, prepare them for the sting of metal laced hatred piercing skin. Read them “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and make it clear that Uncle Tom is a hero just as much as Batman or Superman because to assimilate is to survive and not thrive. When you tuck them in, check for jewelry, I know they don’t know but the golden chains around their necks and the metal ones around grandpappy’s ankles shake the same, burn the same, and hold them back just the same, they are weighted: we have always paid in blood made heavy with the magic of our slain ancestors.
Teacher
By Danyelle
Walk the line between sarcasm and disappointment. Don’t teeter now. Did you teeter? Are you a child? They are the children, not you. Now, did it work? Does she know that you disapprove, that you want her to stop? No. Well that’s because you teetered. Take command. Make your voice iron. A venom voice does nothing. Be a rock, be a mountain, but never be a volcano. How do I not be a volcano? Don’t let her fan the flames. She’s laughing and looking and now her friends are whispering too. Move on, get them distracted. Teach, do your job. But it will happen again, and the magma is getting hotter. Focus on the others, use them as a balm. Now this one is calling out, and that one is not paying attention. Don’t let them be the priority. Call on another student. Give them the spotlight. Those two are talking, whispering. I thought they didn’t recover from their big falling out? I am now the common enemy? I was too sarcastic; I gave them matches to light. Enough. Breathe. Focus on someone else. Focus on your lesson plan in front of you. That student needs help, help them. Talk to them. Be kind. Be gentle. Tell a joke. Be encouraging. Gain one ally for every enemy. Walk around as they do their silent work. Think of ways to make them excited for next class. Think of the new seating arrangements that you should have planned days ago.

XO BY KIBA WALKER ALBUM REVIEW BY DEFT BECK
It's not too often that an album comes across my desk. Because the desk I have was stolen from a Goodwill and all of my albums that I haven't ground up and thrown to the seagulls at the pier for some meal variety are digital now. Still, the visual metaphor comes across just as strongly, and serves as the best way to set the stage for another great review. Kiba Walker's new album XO is all the best of RuPaul and a chocolate fountain with all the chocolate replaced by chocolate wine. It's a hard driving, full of club bumping beats that manage to manifest into reality and take control of the car I'm driving while writing this. I'm going to take you track by track through this album so that you have a friend and that you don't feel as alone at the party that this album would theoretically be played at. Do or Die Do or Die is not only the opening track of the album but also my favorite and least favorite things to do. Kiba orders us to dance with him while ensuring you go down with him at the same time. You the dancer are implored to dance despite whatever theoretical haters are planning your demise through their feeble slays. But you have the rhythm and the curves on fleek, so you have the high ground (read: high portion of the dance floor) Black Gold After asking us if we're ready, Kiba takes us on another Gagaesque odyssey in Black Gold. Amidst the music and the dicks is a further exploration of the nature of being ice cold toward your fellow clubbers. Kiba's fierce delivery is like a cobra from the Reno desert about to strike upon this lizard who is just trying to review an album, please don't hurt him. This song epitomizes the virtues of black gold, possibly the most on point mineral that has ever been craved. Love/Hate Four letters of two different arrangements have never quite expressed the sharp emotions of this song. Haters are further vocally eviscerated by Kiba's hot fire, the likes of which melts his black gold into a monument of pure style. I feel it all in my brain, Kiba, and while I am quite tired, I feel wide awake. If Gaga's career were even more dead than it already is, this song could shake her grave. Ghosts Ghosts takes more of an pop ballad direction than the preceding tracks on the album. Though, none of the previously established edge is gone. Spirits are channeled through Kiba's driving vocals in the chorus, and are further conducted by the featured vocals by Josh Winchester. Harmonies in the final portions of the song synergize the sorrow of the track. I would definitely dance to this in a haunted house. Hella Not only does this song sound like a Swedish woman's name, but its crunk beats could reach all the way to the Netherlands. Kiba raps in baritone to start before going back to the Nicki Minaj-esque rapid fire delivery. The pop bridges and choruses serve as glossy transitions between the dark energies of the verses and beats elsewhere. I'm sure that Hella of Sweden would greatly appreciate this song as she dances in her likely European club of choice. Interlude This song reminds me of when I couldn't get signal on a stormy night out in the countryside. I was just coming back from an illegal rave in the cornfields of northern NH when the rain started to splatter upon my windshield. The heavy droplets almost smothered my car and swallowed everything in my vision. All I could hear was the sound of miniature aquatic explosions against tempered glass and the pounding of my anxious heart. All that gave me solace was the fact that this sentence is over and it's time for the next song to be reviewed. Flames Speaking of spitting hot fire, this song is more like Kiba is breathing fire. I feel bad for the Johnny in this song, because despite the cash that he purportedly has, it is likely much less in comparison to the talent riches that Kiba Walker is clearly demonstrating here. With dubstep wubs and subwoofer throbs, I couldn't help myself. I involuntarily whooped out loud and slapped the hot electric stove where I was hearing my ramen. Only then did I realize what it meant to be burned. Search and Destroy The slower beats of this track remind my feeble lizard brain of classic Justin Timberlake. Though his vocals never got so intense as Kiba's. The beats are in full effect here, filling every channel of my Amazon wireless headphones. You might as well go and search for your five copies of FutureSexLoveSounds and destroy them, yes, even the one your grandmother gifted you by accident, because it is not necessary anymore. By then, all of your mistakes will have been undone. Free Darealsound comes in on Free; Sampling Paranoia Agent, DRS evokes memories of Lovesic, casual guitars accompanying this vocals before Kiba sings in a language I have forever recognized but never have understood. I suppose my counselor was right; my internet diploma in Google Translate is of no use here. Still, I am glad that the tortured Gemini of the rap portrayed here has been set free. Nujabes would be proud, if he wasn't already in the tags of this review. The Boy Who Died Too Soon Another story to tell: I was once in a hospital waiting room. While I was there, I went to a vending machine. They only had candy bars and chips that tasted like barbeque cardboard pieces. Still, I inserted my Benjamin and picked what I wanted. As I was quietly gorging myself, a nurse outside was consoling a mother whose child had just stopped existing as soon as I ran out of ideas for this sentence. TBWDTS evokes some of the same sorrow I felt then, with vocals that remind me of the best of Green Day's more somber work. Though I didn't feel as bloated after listening to this. Wish I could say the same about Dookie. Eulogy In the spirit of good reviews like this one, all good albums must come to an end. Imagine me, a handsome lizard in an oversized tuxedo, delivering my review for this closing track. My non lizard mother is quietly crying in the front, while my father is off having a cigarette at the border of the metaphor. Kiba holds a microphone and raps to rapid bongos, followed by booming drums that spook the priest and make the corpse of ambiguous relation shake. Copperhead on the mic destroys the last fifty seconds of the album, leaving Kiba nothing but white hot cinders. XO was a trip that I wish I still had the souvenirs from. I must have lost them in the club, or in the car back from the rave, or in the pews of the church from the funeral. That's okay, since I have Kiba's words, as well as those of his talented collaborators, to carry me forward. Now, time to put on my good vest and get back to the club. There's a certain lizard gone whom everybody is missing. -- Deft Beck
