The song ends and you do a quick bow, trying to catch your breath. That was good, right? You glance back at your band members, who are all weirdly looking away. When Rowan catches your gaze, he quickly turns his head, suddenly interested elsewhere. You shrug. Meh. It was good to me.

You and your bandmates get off the stage and you beam when you see [RO]. "So? What'd you think?"

Seven (no hatred): Seven makes a face that's a cross between a grimace and a flinch. They put their hands on your arms, rubbing it affectionately. Oddly enough, it feels like Sev's trying to make you feel better about something. "You know I always think you're great." You can't help but pick up on the emphasis on the 'I.'

"So it was good?"

They narrow their eyes comically small and nod slowly. "Ye...aa...h?Yeha.....aeah...." As if giving up on the pretense, they shake their head. "No. It wasn't. Do you have a stomach ache perhaps? Heart burn?"

"What? No. Why, that bad?"

A shrug. "If I suck, I'd like to tell myself it's for a reason so I can feel better."

"If?" you say.

Seven grins. "Hasn't happened yet."

Seven (during-hatred): "That was fucking embarrassing."

G: G beams and puts two palms on your shoulders. "I really appreciate your dedication to the bit."

You tilt your head, confused. "What?"

G's brows furrow, and then they drop their hands. Then they realize something and huff out a laugh. "Wait. That wasn't a joke?"

Panic rises within you. "No?"

G's cheeks balloon--as if they're trying not to laugh--before the effort fails and they double over. "Oh my god. Seriously?"

"G?! Are you laughing at me?"

They can't stop their laughter and they put a hand on their cheek, awed and amused all at once. "That was terrible. I thought you were kidding! Holy shit, I need a copy of that performance for posterity."

Victoria: "Um." Victoria averts her gaze, looking a bit awkward. "I'm going to tell you because I care about you: it was kind of horrible."

"Kind of?"

A flinch. "Very BUT." She puts her hand on your cheek. "This is just one performance. You'll do great tomorrow! Maybe you were just stressed..."

"I thought it was great..." you mumble.

She makes a face, dropping her maternal act a moment. "Seriously?--Oh." She shakes her head. "Sorry."

Sebastian: Sebastian stares at you blankly, though he looks a bit guilty. "I don't have enough experience to have an opinion."

You shove him playfully. "Just tell me."

Sebastian's throat bobs and he says: "It didn't sound great but I don't know enough to feel confident in that claim."

You frown, feeling both hurt and confused. "Why do you sound like you're in a job interview?"

"You know, I think this conversation would be more beneficial to your progress with someone else..."

August: August tilts their head. "Are you asking seriously or is this supposed to be a joke?"

"What?" "Oh. So serious then." They thin their lips, teetering on the heels of their shoes as they think. "It was bad."

"What?"

"Yeah. Terrible, actually." August smiles. "But that's okay. We all have bad days, don't we?"

"The thing is, I thought I did great..."

Their smile drops. "Oh..?"

Orion: Orion doesn't look up from his phone and you frown, tapping him. "Hello?"

He meets your gaze and waves his phone. "Sorry, I was just on Indeed looking for another job." "What? Wait, the performance was bad?"

He looks momentarily horrified, and then helpless, and then disappointed. "The fact that you can't even tell worries me greatly."

You frown. "I thought it was good."

He shakes his head, rubbing the bridge of his nose in resignation. "This is my fault. I've been coddling you too much."

"You think what you do is coddling?!"

you trudged through the hot crowd, shading your eyes with your hand from the radiant august sun.

you were at a convention with your girlfriend, who had begged you to go with her during summer. for the most part, you had no idea what she was getting excited over, but you happily took pictures of her with writers and cosplayers regardless.

when ellie told you she was going to the bathroom, you divided to wander around the massive space. there were a few popular comics you recognized, such as spiderman, batman, and your favorite, the flash.

you saw bright flashing signs of DC and marvel, fondly remembering the time when ellie gave you a very lengthy lecture on the difference between the two after you had said, "but, they seem the same to me...?"

a booth caught your eye where people were dressed up in intricate armor and handing each other cards. you approached them and studied the cards laid out. a woman sitting on a chair noticed you and smiled.

"hi! looking to trade or buy any cards or figurines?"

she gestured to the array of options on the table.

"um, which ones are from uh...savage starlight? it's my girlfriend's favorite so i wanna get something for her, but i don't know much about it."

"oh, that's no problem," she began shuffling around the cards and placed a figurine in front of you, "these are all savage starlight. you're lucky you came now, it's been very popular."

you pointed to a card of a woman named dr. daniela star. her hair sort of looked like ellie's, and she looked like a badass.

"how much for this one?"

she winced, "about $145, she's extremely rare, and that's the last copy we have."

"oh shit," you chuckled, "it's ok, i'll get it."

you bought the card and stepped away to look at more booths. your phone buzzed with a notification.

you found your way upstairs eventually and found ellie, grinning widely while holding a trading card. it looked similar to the one you had just bought, with the same trimming and design on the back.

"look what i found! it's the robot one i was telling you about!"

"oh wow, that's great! doesn't that mean you only need a few more to finish the collection?"

she groaned and threw her head back. "yeah, i just need two more. one is way too expensive though, and the other is impossible to find. it's dr. star, the scientist that created the robot," she held up the robot with a disappointed look, then slipped it into her pocket.

you intertwined her hand with yours. "let's keep looking around, i'm sure you can find something else cool."

she nodded as she led you downstairs to continue strolling around the convention.

"you're so wrong! i would be mj and you're peter!" you teased ellie while you giggled as she rolled her eyes.

"fine, but i'm gwen and you're miles," she remarked, as the two of you stepped outside into the chilling air. you continued to bicker playfully as you walked to the car. as you stepped in ellie sighed.

"thanks for coming to this with me. you have fun?"

you nodded, "yeah, actually, i got a funny picture with someone that was dressed up as ronald mcdonald. i sent it to jesse and dina and they said "oh my god, you found your twin."

ellie let out a loud laugh, and you continued to talk about the experience with her, sharing cool things you saw as you wandered around alone.

"ugh about that, i'm still so upset i couldn't find the card i wanted," she said, voice laced with sadness as she shifted the car into gear to drive home. "it's all good, next year they might have it, or i could find it on ebay if i sell an organ or two," she shrugged at you and placed her hands on the wheel.

you placed your hand on top of hers to stop her.

"actually, while you were in the bathroom i found something," you reached into your purse and pulled out the dr. daniela star card, still encased in the plastic protection.

"oh my fucking god," she breathed, her jaw slack.

you bit your lip as she simply stared. a few seconds passed.

"...ellie do you like it?"

"i love you," she said, taking the card into her hands and inspecting it.

you snickered. "me or her?"

her gaze shot up to yours. "you, you. of course," she set the card down to grab your face with both hands and kiss you so hard you nearly tipped over onto the window. she pulled away for only to fall back onto you again, hugging you tightly mumbling "thankyouthankyouthankyou" into your shirt.

she sat back up and took the robot card from her pocket and compared the two of them. she looked like she was in awe. it was adorable.

"you're such a dork," you said.

"yeah, you love it though."

Yo! I got a little question regarding your webcomic. I have this Pokemon AU, "Just A Dream" that takes place In both Paldea and Alola, but it also has a HUGE focus on Guzma. The plot is way different, so is my art style, and a majority of the characters i'd be using. But I fear some peeps might think I'm copying you. Would you be fine with me posting it on Webtoons? felt like I had to ask since you basically own Guzma at this point...

Omg I feel honored that people think I have ownership of Guzma afgjgjkdfgjkdfggjkfd I know that my version is...almost its own OC at this point, but again, it's just my take on an official Pokemon character owned by Nintendo and OF COURSE you are free to make your own webcomic including him :D I'd actually love to take a look at your comic once you've uploaded it on Webtoons, if you don't mind!

Also since your story's gonna be so different I really don't think people are gonna call you a copy-cat. I've got my story focused on Alola, you're gonna include Paldea and again, I don't own Guzma, I couldn't even claim ownership of my own version of him unless I'd change his name and appearance a bit 😂 And I know that EVERYONE interprets him a little different, so your Guzma will be unique to your story for sure :D

And I honestly love the many different interpretations of Guzma out there, I know that at this point there is BARELY anyone left who still actively draws him, but @oceandiagonale for example has one of my favorite soft GuzmasTM and STILL draws a webcomic involving him, just like I do! im going to get a LOT of backlash for this take but i actually dont really like priya that much?? When i first stepped into the first episode and heard her backstory, i was immediately like “ok toxic parents” because they basically USED her existence for the sake of total drama.

I was pretty disappointed when she didn’t get a character arc where she was like “ok maybe my parents are bad” and maybe eliminated herself/gone through emotional things, but that (or anything similar) never happened. Instead, she won in ignorance, still being blind about her parents’ messed up shenanigans. Even worse, she FULFILLED her parents’ unrealistic standard just to get what she wanted. (medical school>>> winning a rigged reality show) in my opinion

Priya herself was pretty 2-dimensional (my opinion), and especially since she was the “protag” she could’ve gotten more fleshed out by the writing team.

I really wish a character development arc for Priya is going to work out in S2, cause i cant stand that the unhealthy relationship between Priya and her parents wasn’t really mentioned. In fact, it was used more for comic relief than a plot device, which was kinda… questionable.

m. l. rio - if we were villains

Hi, it's been a while! I've been itching to write a book review because it's been over a year now, and sometimes I just have to scream about books in other places than on Discord (I still scream about books on Discord, but shh).

So why not just write a book review about a book that I did not enjoy? Haha, what a funny thing nobody has ever done before! I sure wonder what this funny guy is going to say about this book he didn't enjoy.

Anyway, this is going to be pretty long, and I'm gonna bitch about a bunch of stuff in here. Will contain spoilers.

This book was my first venture into the dark academia genre/aesthetic, something I'd seen a bunch of stolen Tiktoks about on my Pinterest feed, but never paid too much attention to, mostly because I don't really care about stories centered on students. Maybe that should have been my first warning sign.

Initially, I wanted to read The Secret History by Donna Tartt because that's apparently what's seen as the dark academia staple, but I decided to stick to this because it was the only book I'd found an audiobook of on Scribd, and audiobooks are more digestible. Read a bit of the blurb and thought, "okay, sounds like it could be interesting".

Man was I wrong.

Reading the blurb, I already knew I'd have to handle pretty pretentious characters, because there's nothing more pretentious than a group of more or less wealthy white theater kids obsessed with Shakespeare (except for rich white business majors and law majors, put one of each category in a locked room and they'd maul each other within 0.5 seconds like wild beasts trying to one-up the other), but holy shit, it was worse than I'd anticipated.

The writing makes everyone and especially Oliver (the narrator) sound insufferable to the point where I wished they could simply shut up. Unfortunately, this book has slug-like pacing and bitches who love to talk on top of chapters that are padded with lines copied verbatim from Shakespeare plays because admittedly you need a very high IQ to understand the nuances and intricacies of Shakespeare plays and how it influences the characters.

And while we're still on writing: while in theory, the script-like snippets are a fun nod to how plays are formatted, it simply doesn't work in audiobook format. Really grating to hear things like "James: Cock" "Me: So true bestie" when my patience was already wearing thin the more I listened to it.

Yet, the writing wasn't the most infuriating aspect of this book to me. I think what infuriates me the most about If We Were Villains is that, ultimately, the entire book tries so hard to be deep and emotional regarding its plot and its characters when said plot is predictably boring and the characters have the depth of a single sheet of paper.

So let's talk about the plot! By the halfway point in the first part of the book, it was made obvious who would die between the main characters, but comically so. The moment Richard started acting up, I felt like the author slapped a huge sign on his head like "Watch out! He's either the bad guy or... THE VICTIM! OMG!" because there was no way Mrs Rio could come back from turning Richard into a goofy Sunday morning kids cartoon villain. And as soon as Richard died, I also predicted the twist itself, because it was so goddamn obvious it felt like it was screamed into my ears.

Now, I usually don't mind if a plotline is predictable. Actually, I enjoy it! It makes me feel smart to predict things and figure out what's happening, and it usually keeps me engaged rather than plot twists that are pulled out of the author's ass! The problem with this book, though, is that I wasn't engaged in the characters to begin with, so following them going through their problems after Richard's death just made me feel a total sense of apathy followed by "so... when are we getting to more plot?"

It focuses too much on trying to give emotional depth to characters whom, in my opinion, severely lack it to begin with. The main characters aren't interesting to me, they're just puppets with names on them at this point. They can really just be summed up into archetypes that are barely explored in a way that feels compelling:

Oliver: The average joe. Oh, look at him, he's so average and surrounded by people who are so much more interesting than him (this is a lie)!

James: The guy. I'm struggling to find anything interesting about him, besides the fact that he's Oliver's best friend and roommate. You can tell he's important because he's Oliver's roommate. I think a loaf of white bread would be more memorable as a character than him.

Richard: Probably the most interesting character in the cast, ironically, solely because he's a fish out of the water. By that, I mean that he's just a jock in the middle of theater kids. Besides that, he's laughable at best: the author tries so hard to make him devoid of anything sympathetic in the moments leading up to his death that it nullifies any emotional investment you could have in any of the characters.

Meredith: The hot girl but like not in an objectified way, in a gaslight gatekeep girlboss way (this is a lie). Richard's girlfriend. Can't catch a break because everyone and their mom objectifies and slut shames her. She usually breasts boobily, not in written script but in spirit due to how her role in the story is pretty much "piece of meat".

Alexander: The weed-smoking gay literature major stereotype, except in a special way because he objectifies Meredith too, for some reason. Diversity win! Gay man is also gross towards women!

Filippa, Wren and Colin: Filippa and Wren exist for the sole purpose of not turning this cast into a complete sausage fest (& Knuckles Meredith). Filippa is the good friend who covers everyone, and Wren is the fragile frail uwu girl. Colin exists solely to be Alexander's boyfriend.

What a totally charming cast of characters who are oh so full of depth, and completely developed throughout this book. There's also a detective guy, but I completely forgot his name because the book spent too much time on this group of pretentious theater kids whining about their interpersonal relationships.

Man, just talking about how much this book bored me is becoming a pain in the ass, so I'll just summarize what I thought about the book here:

Pretentious, flowery writing with sluggish and often jarring pacing

Characters who are equally pretentious and whose high airs desperately try to hide the innate nothing burger-ness of their existence

Extremely predictable plot that's handed to the reader on a platter by the first part, making the reading experience that much more boring when you have 0 affinity nor sympathy for any of the cast members

Final rating: 1/5 (2.29/10 on CAWPILE). I should have dropped this book when I predicted the entire plot instead of being stubborn.

Hey Tomas. You said you do typesetting. I imagine that includes trying to find good fonts, having favourites etc, so do you... perhaps... want to talk about those? If you have an interest in them? Because I'm not into typesetting but I do love going on like dafont and trying to find good fonts that fit my OCs. Which, as a side consequence, also means sometimes in the street I go oh hey that's written in Little Lord Fontleroy, which I kid you not has happened thrice now with that exact font. first hi, I'm sorry this took so long to respond to, I've kinda been in the hospital and then recovering from a fatigue episode so I'm so sorry for how long this has taken, ily Ram thank you for your patience <3

Brief history on why I'm learning typesetting: I really want to have printed hard copies of all my favorite fics. Nothing more fancy than that. Then, the more I dove into fanbinding with the help of @renegadepublishing and their server, I also discovered the wonderful world of fandom history and preservation! And now that I'm active in a local queer sci-fi/fantasy group too, it's become even more important to me to print the fics I love. I'm currently learning to primarily typeset because I'm a little restricted on funds, so I'm going to get as much typeset as I can so that when I can finally afford the materials to print these fics, I'll be able to just print and bind all at once, y'know?

So the font I use the most has to be EB Garamond! I got mine from google fonts, but I just searched for it and I'm not finding it? It's not really my favorite per se, but I use it the most for the majority of the typesetting I do. It came recommended in @armoredsuperheavy 's Ao3 fic to fanbound book tutorial, which is my basis for all the typesetting I do at this time. (I wish I had actual examples to show off, but I haven't actually printed any of my typesets yet, and I wont print them until I can actually bind them y'know?) I've found it to be a good all-purpose font to fit a variety of fics, and it's looked just as good on my BotW fics and Star Wars fics as it does on knitting patterns!

My favorite font though would have to be Aurebesh Droid by StormtrooperOnWeekends! It's so smooth, especially for an aurebesh font, like bro it's so aesthetically pleasing!!! There were two others that I saved, specifically because they were for fics that needed a different vibe than that one did: Aurebesh Hand by Cinematic Captures and Aurebesh by Pixel Sagas. Aurebesh Hand was perfect for my obikin fic, and I saved the general Aurebesh font just to be on the safe side in case I ever needed a good all-purpose aurebesh for whatever reason.

Now for other fonts that I'm utterly in love with! I highly highly recommend you check out the work of Dieter Steffmann on dafont, who's been going through and digitizing old blackletter fonts. I'm a sucker for blackletter, like, omg, so to have a resource like this is so cool! And I haven't yet gotten to use the majority of these outside of dropcaps, but I'm hoping that I'll have more opportunities in the future!

So I'm still just at the beginning of my font exploration, as you can see! I'll take any recommendations you have, if you don't mind sharing!

Seeing internet drama like… match up or I suppose mirror the subplot of a webcomic I’m reading is so so fascinating. I mean it’s like drama that we’ve seen a bazillion times if you’ve spent enough time in the right circles but idk seeing it playing out too with real people got me thinking again.

Ima keep it vague even tho im an absolute nobody, knowing my luck, this will breach containment and then my unorthodox new ways of thinking will ruffle feathers haha but yeah.

Essentially the comic is about the aftermath of a murder and how people are living their lives after that. One of the accomplices is free and living their life and they’re also online. People find out and bully them, someone even suggested deleting their accounts and going offline for a while, but they don’t want to. One thing that is brought up with it is everyone keeps telling them they got to take accountability, which is true. But that’s got me asking well what does that look like? Like it can really look a lot of different ways but watching irl drama play out it makes me wonder if anything will ever be good enough for people. Like I’ve even seen this same scenario play out many times and there’s usually always a vocal group who just want the guilty party to be forever guilty. Is it good enough for them to take accountability, apologize, and rectify their behavior? (I’m talking low stakes drama here not like heinous abuse lol) it just really feels like if you ever make a tiny misstep online that’s your cross to bear forever. I feel like it’s very reductive and doesn’t allow the person to grow and change, which, isn’t that what we want? For people to grow and change and better themselves? Like idk man at this point in time if you can’t show me examples of someone doing XYZ shitty thing within the last year, like yknow something recent, I really couldn’t give a flying sideways fuck. If someone said “hey I did XYZ at this time and that was fucked and shitty and I’ve worked to change myself” and they haven’t done XYZ and did work to change themself, then idk man you sound incredibly immature and like you gotta mind your own business. Like it’s perfectly fine to be like “I don’t like this person they’re icky to me” that’s fucking fine you don’t need a good reason to not like people they can just give you general ick, water and oil don’t mix and you won’t like everyone you meet. You don’t have to be a bully tho 🙄🙄

She said she’d help them start their own OFs if they wanted and one took her up on that offer. And like this was all so funny to me because like this just gave me DeviantArt sparkledog furry drama circa. 2007, like legit “yOu CaNt PaInT yOuR cAr PuRpLe!!11 YoU cOpIeD!!!!2!11!” Like bro this is straight up “you copied my design because you also have stripes on your tail” like day one internet shit, get with it girl. But also this is funny too because I seen her at that time basically copy someone else’s video like cmon. So anyways that basically made their friendship implode on itself and she has since then had a vengeance on this poor girl lol so here’s the nutty part, TF will constantly say “this girl is always copying everything I do, I saw her doing XYZ” which like is kinda inconspicuous when you hear it but then it’s like wait, you say you do not like this person, you try and avoid them, so on and w/e so it’s like wait,,, HOW do you know that??🤨unless you’re checking out her page and following what she does 👀 sussy. Yeah working on your own stuff gives you skills a dealer or shop won’t but there’s far more you’ll learn in a shop, and I feel like deep down she knows that and feels threatened by it. i love when people are like “oh you have to get into [this fandom] it’s so good” and if you’re like “ok well how do i do that” they’re like “It’s easy you just need to watch 4 movies, one is from 1977 one is from 1979 one is from 2011 and one is a short film but i have a vimeo link for it but it really helps establish an important plot thing. and then theres a comic run but you dont need to read ALL the graphic novels you just need to read #1, #2, #3, #5... okay wait four is SO good nvm you have to read #4 too. okay but before you get into any of that the whole series is based on a series of video games which you have to play in chronological order. the first three games are only available to play on a console that stopped being produced eighty-two years ago when the developers all got drafted into wwii but i think i have a link to download an emulator copy somewhere. and the rest of the games you can just watch let’s plays for but you need to watch multiple let’s plays because there are parts where you have to make different choices. anyway the movies are based on a tv show that actually has your dad’s favourite actor in it! it has 15 seasons but production got suspended in 1347 when the black plague came to europe but i promise it’s REALLY worth watching. oh also if you like this one character theres a book series about him and theyre actually turning the book series into a new netflix animated show starring jonathan van ness from queer eye so you dont even need to read the books you can just watch the cartoon if you wanna know about him! oh but before you watch the cartoon you have to know about that character’s dad’s backstory but it’s fine because my best friend george beard and i have a treehouse where we make comics about the dad and in issue #581 we do a deep dive into his backstory- oh wait but i just remembered it’s kind of spoilery for the video games but it’s okay because it’s technically a separate timeline. the wiki does a really good job of making everything clear and explaining what’s happening in which universe. but obviously don’t read the wiki until after you’ve finished the movies and the comics and the games and the tv show and the books and the tv show and the comics and the games because you might get spoiled for what happens to Qkwadriassian XB-9 Laura Smithson and he’s like my favourite character omg youre gonna love him. anyway after you get into all that i have a really good fanfic i want you to read it’s set in canon but it’s just about two of my ocs. but if you really want to understand their backstory you obviously have to listen to this interview the creators of the series did in 2011 at a convention the panel is one hour long and they spend most of it talking about inside jokes from production but they’re really funny i promise. actually i think the best starting place is the way i got into it which is from this podcast that does reviews of movies and shows and stuff and they did a review of- you know mystery science three thousand? Haha it’s kind of like mystery science theatre three thousand and they did a review of the third movie and it’s like a video review but they talk about other things not just the movie but it’s a really good place to start” and you’re like “yeah man i’ll check that out!”

And and then the way the mystery builds and It’s like is Danny pushing things outta his mind bc he needs to or is this a drawback of the duplicates diyeing??

And the way I read it, are Vlad and Danny using complete different methods of duplication? Like maybe your intention goes into it and Vlad intends for the duplicates to be expendable minions - but Danny would never have considered that, and essentially tried making a copy of himself as best he could

Anyway those are the things my mind considered while reading bc I cannot focus on just one thing but my main point here is I liked the fic thank you it was a lovely surprise!!

oh I LIKE that ambiguity. I wrote with the intention of the first one, but the idea that the actual death of the duplicates has an impact on Danny's awareness of himselves is chilling

here's the thing - their duplication method is exactly the same. The one and only difference is in their attitudes to their duplicate selves.

Vlad does not worry the way Danny does about which self he is when he duplicates. HE is standing there in front of Danny talking, so HE is Vlad. He's enough of a narcissist to be satisfied with that answer. It would take tapping deep into empathy to consider what any lost duplicate may be going through, and it's not worth his attention or energy.

And importantly at the point in the fic that Vlad and Danny talk, Danny had already decided to save one of his selves from Walker's prison. He's whole again with that self. And so Danny deeply understands the terror of being left behind, in a way Vlad does not, because all the Vlad in front of Danny is no part the Vlads who were ever left behind.
