okay listen I don't just ship kyouko x momiji for entirely self-indulgent reasons. there's actually a really interesting story that can happen there.
a dumb chuuni puppydog girl trying to impress the badass sword lesbian, and the badass sword lesbian feeling the need to protect this helpless mutt before she hurts herself. the this evolves into momiji for the first time getting a kind of unconditional love and adoration that she'd never known before from her toxic tengu polycule, and kyouko getting knot from a wolf who calls her "kiddo"
okay you know what on second inspection maybe this is entirely self indulgent

Yuki, Kyo, Kagura, Momiji, Tohru with a reader from zodiac
FRUBA CHARACTERS W ZODIAC!READER
((reader’s zodiac is based off of western/greek zodiac signs; will be capricorn!reader))
YUKI
Tumblr media
Is so shocked to find out there is a second zodiac curse
So grateful that there are more people like him
^^feels really bad about this
Bc y’all aren’t from the same zodiac - physical touch is even more dangerous
I mean,, imagine seeing not only a rat surrounded by clothes, but a weird goat-fish hybrid???
Regardless, tries to have physical contact with you whenever possible
Linking pinkies, resting his head on your shoulder, being shockingly close at all times,,
Is worried about ur scales dehydrating when you transform - tries to keep water on him for you
Makes sure you never feel insecure about your zodiac form like he does
Has a really lovely feeling of solidarity w you
Would do anything to protect your secret
Because he knows you would do the same
KYO
Tumblr media
Straight up thinks you’re lying at first
“There’s no fuckin way”
You tackle him to prove it
“wtf that’s not even a real animal????”
Gets v flustered when u transform back
Mans is fine being naked, but seeing other naked ppl?
Hell nah
Eventually just kinda takes you under his wing w an annoyed sigh
So so touch adverse; is so scared of you seeing his true form
Like with the rest of his zodiac - wishes he was like you
So envious, but in a way that carries a deep sadness
Shows his affection through banter and friendly violence
((Mans will not hold your hand; however will kick you behind the knees - gentle enough as to not hurt, but hard enough to make you lose balance))
Scolds you for anything that could put your secret at risk
“How did you even survive before you met me, dumbass?”
KAGURA
Tumblr media
So so excited to learn there is another curse
“We’re the same!!”
Is jealous of your animal form
You’re a cool, cute, mythical animal; and she’s just a pig?? Unfair!!
Constantly lets you know how unfair this is
Pretty upset that she can’t cling to you all the time
She just wants to show you how much she loves you, y’know?
Ironically, tries to do alot of mud and clay treatments to your skin and scales
Loves loves self care nights together
Isn’t opposed to cuddling when no one else is around, despite animals and then nudity
Doesn’t care if you see her naked
But anyone else???
Instantly branded a pervert.
Tries to keep you all to herself; “to keep the curse a secret, of course!!”
MOMIJI
Tumblr media
Another one that is genuinely Thrilled to find out there are more like him
But is also instantly worried
“Who’s your god? What are they like?”
When you assure him that you’re safe, is So relieved
Even after this, is nosy as all hell lmao
Wants to know Everything about Everyone
“So you are Capricorn, ja? Who is Pisces? Because I am a pisces too!!”
Thinks your zodiac form is adorable!
Loves sitting in-between your horns when you’re both transformed
Unsurprisingly; will be exceedingly touchy-feely regardless of transformations
Mans does not give a single flying Fuck
Even when ur in public and have to be careful of transforming - is never Not touching you
Holding hands galore!!
Shows you off to the rest of the zodiac
But doesn’t let you anywhere near Akito
You’re too precious
TOHRU
Tumblr media
Feels so blessed to be meeting more special and unique people
Is very vocal about this
Is also V nosy; but not in a malicious way
Plays guessing games as she meets everyone
((Usually gets it wrong))
Doesn’t know as much about the Western zodiacs, but is very excited to learn!
Very very cautious to make sure you don’t transform
Thinks you’re beautiful and fascinating when you do though!!
But wants to keep you safe
However, its a well known fact that she’s one clumsy mf
Me too, Tohru, me too
Will tell the most Wack cover stories for you
Wants you to be besties with her zodiac

Kyo and Momiji: interlude (part 3 of 5)
So, here are just some cute scenes from late S1/early S2 that also inform us of the nature of their relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, these gems from the Hiro episode.
Momiji immediately figures out what's going on when Hiro starts castigating Kisa for bringing the Mogeta DVD to Tohru instead of watching it with him. When Kisa expresses confusion, Momiji cheerfully says, "Hiro's being unreasonable!"
Soon after, we get this delightful moment:
Kyo: What the heck is going on? Momiji: You're so dense, Kyo. Kyo: Huh? Momiji: Hiro was jealous of Tohru. He's trying his best, but he's still a sixth grader. He's awkward about his feelings.
(cut to Kisa and Hiro talking, then back to our faves)
Tohru: Ah, so I was his romantic rival! Momiji: That's rough for you, Tohru! Kyo: Huh?
And later, when Tohru sentences Hiro to "hug penalty," Kyo's response is adorably telling.
Kyo: Seriously? How is that a punishment? Momiji: *giggles*
I mean, just look at Momiji's face when he calls Kyo dense! But also, it's extremely telling that Kyo trusts Momiji enough to ask him what's going on.
I think this interaction highlights the difference between their people skills. Kyo is good at getting a read on people; he can tell when someone's upset, when someone is genuinely happy, etc... but he may not always be able to verbalize what's at the core of their feelings. He immediately knows Hiro has done something to upset Tohru, but he can't make the leap to understanding it has anything to do with Kisa. I wonder how much of this was a survival/coping mechanism he picked up because of his status as the cat. He would need to be good at getting a quick read on people, especially his biological father, for his own safety.
Momiji, on the other hand, is very good at understanding the underlying things that drive people (knowing that Tohru values her mother when he wants to convince Tohru to go to the onsen, for example, or knowing that Hatori is really just trying to protect Tohru in Spring Comes, or- in this very scene- knowing that Hiro cares about Kisa more than anything), but either can't always tell when people are down and need to talk to someone, or just doesn't like giving space to negative emotions. I suspect this is because of his own traumatic childhood; he needed a narrative way to understand what his parents did, to empathize with them so he wouldn't hate them. He had time to reflect on and understand their perspective, even if it still hurts him.
Momiji uses his ability to understand people's driving forces to manipulate them (not necessarily a bad thing - he manipulates Hiro into apologizing to Tohru and returning her pocketbook by bringing Kisa into the situation, for example). Kyo uses his ability to read people in the moment to make sure his loved ones are safe and happy.
Something else I find interesting here is that the interaction between Kisa and Hiro is a bit of a microcosm of Kyo and Tohru's relationship, right down to Momiji's role as interpreter and catalyst. Momiji's the one who brings Kisa into the situation
Tumblr media
Just a cute li'l brotherly moment between them in the episode where Tohru gets sick.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here, Kyo, Tohru, Arisa, and Saki are planning for their Kyoto trip, and Kyo is being a grouch about having to spend time with Yuki. Momiji scolds him for focusing on that instead of the fact that he gets to spend time with Tohru (something we've seen Momiji scold Kyo for before).
Momiji: Kyo, you dumbo! You already get to go with Tohru! Don't be so selfish! Kyo: Oi. Momiji: I wish I could go with Tohru! I want to eat deer crackers with her! Arisa: Can't eat 'em. Momiji: Kyo, you don't wanna? You don't wanna do stuff with Tohru? Kyo: Idio- 'Course I- Saki: 'Course you-? Arisa: 'Course you-? Momiji: 'Course you-? Kyo: Yeah! This is exactly how you all mess with me! Arisa: It's out of love, I tell ya!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this scene, after Mayu pours the bucket of water on Kyo and Haru, where Kyo scolds Tohru (again, one way he shows affection), Momiji translates for him/verbalizes Kyo's affection for Tohru again, and Kyo gets embarrassed (cuuuute).
Kyo: And you. Stay away from Haru if he turns dark. Tohru: Huh? Kyo: You can't be trusted not to get hurt. Tohru: O-oh, but that would be rude to Hatsuharu-san... Kyo: He's the one who's rude! Tohru: B-but that's- Kyo: Sheesh, you don't get it at all. Momiji: "I couldn't stand that happening!" is what Kyo wants to say, I'm sure. Tohru: Eh? Kyo: Momiji! Get outta here! Leave! Stop blabbing abou-
It's worth noting that Kyo's scolding Tohru because she could have gotten hurt, and he cuts himself off when he catches sight of his beads and is reminded that he once hurt Tohru, too. Tohru getting hurt is the worst possible outcome of any situation for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just another cute brotherly moment complete with a big brother noogie from Kyo.
Tumblr media
The scene where Momiji takes them to the haunted house is also a great little moment showcasing the different ways they show they love Tohru.
Momiji: Here! This is it! Wow, it looks like so much fun! Yuki and Kyo (internally): This... has gotta be... Momiji: So exciting! Let's go! Kyo: Hold your horses, kid! Yuki: Why don't we ask everybody if they want to enter first? Like Honda-san. Haru: She's speechless. Kyo: That means no. Let's go home. Momiji: Aw, Tohru, you can't? You're scared? Tohru: N-no! Well, if you ask if I'm scared, I would have to say I am! But they say that if you clear your mind of worldly thoughts, even fire doesn't feel hot! I can't keep avoiding it! Kyo: Actually, it's fine to avoid it. Tohru: I'm going to enter and show you I can! Go me!
Again, Momiji wants to do fun things with Tohru, while Kyo wants to protect her.
Tumblr media
Inside the haunted house is hilarious, too. Yuki and Kyo are both exasperated by the other three, and both of them scold Tohru for closing her eyes or trying to laugh her way through (like Momiji). Kyo teases her, too, which is always delightful. When she falls, Kyo and Yuki both offer their hands, then immediately start fighting. Momiji takes her hand and scolds the two of them.
Momiji: Don't ignore a girl as you fight! It's a no-no! Kyo: Shut up, brat! Hurry and go! Yuki: He's right, though.
Momiji is again telling Kyo to worry less about his hatred for Yuki and more about his love for Tohru, which seems to be a recurring theme. Hmmmm....
Anyway, part 4 will be the beach arc! Hope you enjoyed reading!

So I'm curious what do you think about the @mysteriouslymysticalgiver directions for Aurore, Chloe, and Nathaniel? I'm really curious about Chloe since her bio implies Zoe met Longg quite some time before Granduer's attacks?
I absolutely adore the one for Aurore. I really gave me Momiji vibes from Fruits Basket with the whole "every memory is precious" vibe.
Nathaniel is honestly a vibe in general. Why go out when you just stay at home and art?
Chloe was an interesting one. It's like her in Salvation, but extended to everyone rather than it just being about Zoe. And the bit with it hinting that Zoe knew Longg before the villains checks out because, well, it's Longg. Expect nothing less

Now I'm super curious about those anime character influences you mentioned in the Ask. Are there any notable examples in your OC cast?
Yes....…yes there are. :)
(I really wanted to answer this ask for a while but I was unsure how to go about it so I’ll just bite the bullet and put up some side by sides and have y’all judge me cause idc anymore 😭)
Most recent addition is Tiger Lily and a semi-influence is Jaeha from Yona of the Dawn! Really the only things I got inspired by him are the green hair, purple/gold outfit, and the fact that he throws knives lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we’ve got Sandy Skye, who has a Zeno from Yona of the Dawn inspo! I’m sure y’all can see exactly what I’m talking about so I ain’t gonna explain nothin'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sketch Book has a very slight inspiration from this character I came across called Ganesha from the Fate Grand Order game? Never played it but I really liked how she was a chubby gal with glasses and liked nerdy things lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jelly Bean has a kinda inspo from Momiji from Fruits Basket! Just a little personality wise and cause one time Momiji wore a cute sailor outfit and it was adorable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barnaby definitely has an anime flair but I’m actually not entirely sure who?? I’m leaning towards Damian Desmond from SPYxFAMILY because they both are a bit uptight, smart academics who can get annoyed easily. But I imagine Barnaby to be nicer and not lose his cool as often.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah, Moonlight Melody. She honestly had a “depressed anime mom” vibe from the start lol. I know there’s some anime out there where the heroine or mom had a rich young life but something happened to take it away from them and they reminisce about old times. Have never personally watched it though... ;w;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I adore the Ghibli movie Castle in the Sky so I found a way to incorporate a tiny piece of it into my oc universe! I loved the old pirate lady captain’s vibes and gave Nana Peppermint a bit of that!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And lastly but not leastly, my dear dear ponysona Ginger Bread. She just has classic clumsy nice anime girl vibes and that be it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hope you enjoyed learning about my inspirations! I have many more ocs yet to be designed that I’m sure will also be anime influenced because let’s be honest, it's a huge love of mine lol.

give me something that’ll haunt me when you’re not around

This bold new world in which Yuichi is aware of his feelings for Leonardo—where he has a name for that sunlight that sleeps in his heart, and understands why it feels like dawn every time they’re together—sort of looks exactly like the old one.
His revelation may have changed the landscape of the universe as far as Yuichi is concerned, but nothing much seems to have moved for anybody else.
Chizu, Gen and Kitsune look so full of pity when he gathers his nerve and bares his heart to them that it’s abundantly clear they’ve known all along. Yuichi has never felt any particular way about being a rabbit yokai, but now he’s learning to be fervently grateful for his thick, downy fur.
No matter how hard he blushes, it doesn’t show. And he’s been walking around with a face on fire lately. That wouldn’t do wonders for his reputation.
At least his friends are supportive, in their own way. It’s like a dam has broken and they’ve got nothing but comments and opinions on his love life now that the secret is out and it’s fair game.
Kitsune makes fun of Yuichi relentlessly, but also promises that if Leonardo does anything to hurt him, she’ll curse him so hard his descendants a thousand years from now would feel it. Yuichi has the sinking sense that she isn’t kidding. He darts a sidelong glance at their voice of reason, but Chizu only looks mildly impressed by the ferocity of the threat and also like she would be on board with seeing it through.
“I can take care of myself,” Yuichi says, bristling a little.
“Sure you can,” Kitsune replies indulgently.
Gen even pats him on the head, like that was an adorable sentiment and he was adorable for sharing it. Yuichi is going to keep them all far, far away from the Hamatos for as long as he possibly can.
He doesn’t know how long that’s going to be, though. He wants to spend all of his time with that stupid turtle. He wants every quiet hour of his life filled up with Leonardo’s groan-worthy puns and surprisingly sharp sarcasm and wry good humor. In a perfect world, Yuichi would see him every day.
That’s definitely opening the door for his friends to eventually make a spectacle out of themselves, but the only alternative is limiting how often he sees Leonardo, and that—he isn’t sure if that’s possible? Like, he wouldn’t even known how to do that.
Case in point, when Leonardo texts one night asking if the following afternoon was a good time to swing by the farm and finally fix that farmbotto, Yuichi drops his phone in his haste to send back an affirmative.
It might be time to admit his self-control is completely nonexistent. Or he could live in denial a little while longer.
Whatever. He stops worrying about it, his brain too full of a warm, bubbly, champagne-flavored feeling that drowns everything else. Yuichi is going to see him tomorrow!
Oh god. Yuichi is going to see him tomorrow.
“All hands on deck,” he bellows down the second floor hallway. Various fluffy heads poke their way out of various doors, and he adds, “Leonardo is going to be here in twenty-four hours and this place is an entire disaster.”
“My room is clean,” Momiji says, looking around at her siblings judgmentally.
“He’s really coming back?” Jomei asks. He’s tugging on his fingers, like he’s thinking about sucking on them. It’s a self-soothing behavior he’s only recently outgrown. “I thought we scared him away forever and that’s why he left without saying bye.”
“I told you, you didn’t do anything wrong,” Yuma says firmly. “The robot scared him, so his big brother took him home.”
“Robots are cool,” Botan says. “And ours are super old and harmless. Who’d be scared of them?”
“Remember when you got lost in the woods when you were little, and it started to storm?” Yuichi asks, not unkindly. “Remember how rain would upset you after that? Even though you knew better and didn’t want it to?”
The cream-colored bunny is quieted by that, seal point face wrinkling in what Yuichi hopes is understanding.
“A robot was mean to him?” Sonoko asks, glancing between Yuma and Yuichi for clarification.
“Something like that,” Yuma says, in a tone that suggests that’s all the answer they’re going to get.
“We should hide all the bots,” Jomei pipes up. “So he doesn’t get scared again.”
So the next morning, Yuichi’s little cousins spend a full hour running back and forth across the farm, making sure even the smallest gardening bot is locked away in the furthest shed for the afternoon. They’re very vindictive about it. It’s really cute.
Yuichi is waiting on the porch when the spinning blue portal opens in the yard. His heart is racing, and there are butterflies fluttering to life inside his stomach, and it almost feels like being a little kid again. Back then the world was full of wonders and every single day was bursting with potential adventures and nothing was impossible because it never occurred to him that anything actually should be.
This feels like that. As brilliant and breathless and shining as that. Yuichi tries to hold it down, keep it safe and secret, where it can’t ruin anything.
He doesn’t know how successful he is. Leonardo is wearing a yellow jacket this time, with iron-on patches in various shapes and colors, and even without it he’s the brightest thing for miles. Michelangelo is draped against his carapace, leaning forward over his shoulder to show him something on his phone, and Casey is chattering at Donatello, whose one-word answers in response don’t seem annoyed in the least.
Donatello, at least, has a task to accomplish. Casey and Michelangelo are clearly only tagging along in the role of emotional guard dogs.
Leonardo catches Yuichi’s eye from the yard, and his face splits in half with the force of his grin. Yuichi doesn’t realize he’s moving until he’s hopping the porch steps, and Michelangelo slides off Leonardo’s back so he can meet Yuichi halfway, and they slam against each other with enough force that it nearly hurts.
They lean apart, and Yuichi is going to say—something. Something completely normal and not at all lovesick and also effortlessly charming. He’s definitely going to say a thing that is all of that all at once.
Before he gets a word out, there’s a mob of small children clamoring around them.
“Aw, it’s my favorite bunnies!” Leonardo says brightly. “And they’re in attack mode! We should have brought riot gear.”
He hoists Jomei into his arms and tosses him into the air in the same effortless way the cooks at work toss pizza dough. Jomei shrieks with delight the whole way up and down.
Casey has a melting look on his face, gazing at Yuichi’s cousins the way people look at baby photos, and it occurs to Yuichi that the young time-traveler must have only known these children as fully-grown adults, if he knew them at all. He settles cross-legged in the grass and holds out both his arms, so Botan can get a good look at the gear he’s wearing.
“My uncle made all this for me,” he says proudly. “I used to live someplace not very safe, so my family made sure I had everything I could possibly need with me at all times. I’m safe now, but I’m still getting used to it.”
Given the bold purple insignia on his equipment, Yuichi is willing to hazard a guess at which uncle he means. The uncle in question has side-stepped this whole meet-and-greet and looks less than enthusiastic about being here in the first place.
“I’m here for the robot,” he says tonelessly, more to his phone screen than to Yuichi. “They’re here for the dinosaurs.”
“False, Donald!” Michelangelo declares. He has a giant tote bag slung over his shoulder and he thrusts it forward now, as if that alone is proof positive of his real motivations. “Usagi, where’s your aunt? I brought her thank-you pastries!”
“Right here,” Auntie says from the back of the group, having approached at a more reasonable pace behind the kids.
She looks no-nonsense, and beckons Leonardo down for a hug before he can get guilty and weird and try to do something stupid, like apologize for his panic attack. He has to bend nearly double to fit into her arms, but her embraces all have some mystic property about them. It’s impossible to feel anything but safe and warm when she’s holding you.
“Welcome back, sweetheart,” she says, letting him go. “And these are your brothers?”
Michelangelo darts forward to introduce himself, and Auntie warms to his sweetness and enthusiasm within seconds. He presses his tote bag into her hands, mouth running a mile a minute about this recipe and that ingredient, how amazing her cooking was, how grateful he is that she was so kind to his big brother, here’s your tupperware back and I filled them all back up with baked goods as thanks, etc.
Yuichi steals a moment in all the conversation and chaos to press his arm against Leonardo’s. It doesn’t even matter that he doesn’t have him all to himself—Leonardo is here, close enough to touch, solid and healthy and grinning in the late afternoon sunshine, and that’s the only thing Yuichi could even think of to ask for.
Leonardo’s golden eyes are lethal in this light, and his crooked smile is a weapon in and of itself, and Yuichi feels his heart kickstart under the turtle’s undivided attention. Then Leonardo jolts a bit in surprise and glances down and Yuichi has a front-row seat to the way his face brightens like someone flipped a switch inside his head.
There’s a familiar tokage pawing at the black wrappings on his leg, making petulant little laser beam noises. She’s the size of a small housecat now, and the gray of her scales has cooled more towards blue. There are bold streaks of yellow from the outer corner of her eyes that stretch all the way down the sides of her body. She’s still settling but she’s already eye-catching. She’s going to be spectacular when she’s done.
“Hey! It’s the little champ herself!” He drops to the ground and the impatient tokage at his feet immediately worms up the front of him until he has no choice but to hold her. “How are you, cariño ? You’ve gotten huge!”
“That’s an overstatement,” Yuma says, smiling. “But she’s definitely made a comeback. She’ll be ready to go home with you in a couple weeks.”
Leonardo’s head snaps up in surprise. He opens his mouth, but before he can say anything, Michelangelo blurts, “SURPRISE! Raphie’s been talking to Usagi’s aunt about it since your last visit! She said you and Champion really bonded and it wouldn’t be fair to give her to anyone else!”
“All tokage have latent mystic powers,” Yuichi explains, feeling affectionate at the gobsmacked expression on Leonardo’s face. “When we say you bonded, we mean that sort of literally?”
“Okay?” Leonardo says, holding her like he’s worried that any bond with him might have had an adverse effect on the little lizard, because he’s an idiot.
“That just means she’ll sort of evolve to be the best companion to you that she can be,” Yuma pipes up. “That’s why Auntie’s tokage are so big, and settle in greens and browns—they’re farm animals, they help with plowing and building and stuff.”
“Champion might do something entirely new,” Yuichi says. He’s sort of looking forward to it. Leonardo’s influence can only lead to crazy and chaotic and amazing things.
“Ninja dinosaur,” Michelangelo whispers in awe.
“It’s really okay?” Leonardo asks Auntie.
“Of course, baby. We just need her to be a little bit stronger before she leaves the nest,” Auntie tells him. Her eyes are warm. “Give her something to look forward to and she’ll sprint to that finish line.”
Yuichi smiles at the scene for a second longer, before the impatient aura radiating around Donatello finally becomes too much to ignore.
The broken farmbotto is still exactly where they left it, mostly because it’s huge and unwieldy and in a lot of sharp, heavy pieces. It seemed too dangerous to risk moving without help, and Leonardo was adamant about his brother being the one to undo the damage he’d done.
Donatello hums in vague interest and gets right to work, squatting next to the machine and pulling his goggles down over his eyes. Yuichi is fidgeting with the yoyo in his pocket, mustering the courage for the noble and potentially very stupid act of making conversation, when his phone chimes in his pocket.
⚡️⚡️NEON LEON⚡️⚡️: donald hasn’t attacked u yet has he?
⚡️⚡️NEON LEON⚡️⚡️: set smth on fire if u need an extraction
⚡️⚡️NEON LEON⚡️⚡️: if i see smoke ill come running
⚡️⚡️NEON LEON⚡️⚡️: 🐢 💨
Usagi: Your brother is NOT that scary. You’re just trying to psyche me out.
Donatello is exactly that scary, but Yuichi isn’t giving Leonardo the satisfaction of admitting it.
⚡️⚡️NEON LEON⚡️⚡️:  bet
“So what’s your deal with Nardo?” Donatello asks abruptly. “You’re real cozy all of a sudden, but he always seemed pretty certain you didn’t like him.”
The initial shock—Donatello is speaking to him?— is drowned out by a surge of frustration.
It’s not Yuichi’s fault he’s like this. He’s always been like this. It’s not easy for him tor each out to people he doesn’t know, even if it’s someone he would really like to know.
How many times did he second-guess himself before he finally approached Leonardo that first time? For a reason that wasn’t taking an order or dropping off plates?
How many times has he second-guessed himself since then? Sometimes he has no idea what the hell Leonardo is even doing here.
“I did like him,” Yuichi says quietly. “I do. I’m not, uh. I’m not good at…connecting with people. I never really. I never know what to say.” He tugs on his ear, disquieted by his own failures. “And Leonardo was so intimidating. I had no idea how to be his friend. But I wanted to.”
Donatello’s hands have slowed until he’s sitting there gazing down into the cavern of a gutted robot without moving at all. Yuichi is abruptly worried that he’s said too much and irritated Leonardo’s most critical sibling to the point of no return.
For twins, they’re so different. Leonardo is charming and charismatic, but it’s impossible to tell what he’s actually thinking. Donatello is calculating and disinterested in anyone outside his tight-knit clan, but he’s also transparent to a fault about what’s on his mind.
They’re each unfailingly loyal, and probably the most stubborn people on the planet.
That’s why it’s such a surprise when Donatello starts talking, unprompted, for the second time in as many minutes.
“Time moves differently in the prison dimension,” he says, apropos of nothing. “It’s all relative. An hour here could feel like days there, or the other way around. I know, because the time logs in Leonardo’s gear jump all over the place. Trying to sync it was a nightmare.”
Every time Yuichi thinks he’s heard everything there is to hear about the invasion and his friend’s part in it, something else is thrown onto the top of the pile, and it always manages to be more upsetting than the last. Yuichi closes his eyes against the swell of second-hand anguish and tries to ride it out.
“Leo is the worst person in the world,” Donatello says without feeling. “He’s impulsive and arrogant and stubborn and he has an inferiority complex as wide as the Hudson is deep. But he’s also my twin, and my other half, and my best friend, and my little brother, and he was gone. He didn’t exist anywhere in the world. For twenty-one minutes and thirty-eight seconds, I wasn’t a whole person.” His hands clench around his tools so hard they begin to whine in protest, and he has to set them down. “And I don’t know. How to do this. Without him.
“So. Look. I’ll lay this out one time. And then I’ll have reached my emotional vulnerability quota with you for the next calendar year.” He doesn’t look up, eyes trained on the delicate circuits beneath his hand. “Leo’s my person. Hurt him and I’ll kill you twice.”
“Understood,” Yuichi says softly.
“Good,” Donatello says. After a moment, he adds grudgingly, “After your little tête-à-tête he’s been talking to us more. He even went and woke Raph up the other night after a bad dream and he hasn’t done that in—I don’t know, years. Raph was crying about it at breakfast the next morning. So thanks I guess. Anyway I didn’t bring my extra arms so hold this flashlight and point it where I tell you.”
His tone has taken on that not-annoyed quality it had when he was talking to Casey earlier. It’s entirely possible that Donatello doesn’t hate him! Yuichi accepts the flashlight with about twenty times the gravitas it deserves.
Take that Leonardo, he thinks smugly.
And then, as if summoned by the passing thought of him, Yuichi hears the distant sound of Leonardo’s voice in full performance mode, undercut by the noisy, squealing laughter of children.
Oh spirits.
“One second,” Yuichi says quickly, and sets the flashlight on a workbench as he hustles to the open barn door.
His intuition led him true. Leonardo is, for some godforsaken reason, on the roof of the two and a half story farmhouse, broken bones and all. Yuichi’s four youngest cousins are gathered below to watch whatever spectacle he’s about to make of himself.
“LEONARDO!” Yuichi yells, hands cupped around his mouth.
“What??” the turtle has the audacity to call back.
“That thing you’re doing right now—it’s really, really dumb.”
“Momiji bet me I couldn’t do it,” Leonardo says, like that’s in any way a decent excuse. There’s a chorus of giggling from the audience of grade schoolers clustered in the yard.
“Momiji is a child. She is literally six years old. Are you really going to let a six-year-old child peer-pressure you into breaking even more of your bones?”
Even from a distance, Yuichi can tell that Leonardo is squinting at him, the golden coins of his eyes narrowing into judgmental slivers.
“I feel like that’s a trick question. I’m a ninja, I won’t break any bones.”
“Okay, do what you want,” Yuichi replies, leaning back and spreading out his hands in a show of surrender. “But just so you know, Champion will be really disappointed if she has to wait even longer to go home with you because you decided to prove to everybody in a ten mile radius that you can’t even take care of yourself, let alone a baby tokage.”
“Oh my god, you can’t threaten me with my daughter, you monster!” Yuichi is pretty sure his expression is speaking for him just fine, because Leonardo groans theatrically and starts clambering down off the roof. “Okay fine.”
“Thank you. Spirits,” Yuichi adds in an undertone, crossing back to Donatello’s workspace. He picks up the light and aims it again. “Sorry.”
Donatello has his goggles shoved to the top of his head and is turned around to stare at him severely. His expression is impossible to read. Yuichi has no idea what he’s looking for, but he seems to find it after a very tense twenty seconds.
He goes back to work without speaking. Just when Yuichi has resigned himself to never getting an explanation for that particular episode of strangeness, Donatello says abruptly, “Your yoyo.”
Yuichi jerks a little in surprise, the beam of light wavering. “Uhh, yeah? What about it?”
“How would you feel about adding an electroshock function?” Donatello asks unremarkably. “Like a stun gun, only better, because it would be Genius Built. I could get the high voltage discharge up to 1000 microcoulombs, easy.”
It’s the last thing he was expecting. Yuichi stills in surprise, and reaches into his pocket for the yoyo he never goes anywhere without.
He found it in that weird mystic temple that appeared in the woods near his house one day and disappeared just as suddenly. Karasu-Tengu-sensei looked really alarmed when he mentioned it to her, seizing him by the shoulders and looking him up and down as if to make sure he’s all present and correct after a harrowing ordeal.
It hadn’t really been very interesting. He didn’t know why sensei was so anxious about it. The temple had been musty and neglected, and probably deeply haunted, but ghosts are an okay sort as long as you mind your manners. The farthest wall rippled, and showed him a collection of different things. Gems, and weapons, and ancient tomes. Something enticed him forward, offering him a choice.
Yuichi didn’t really need another sword, because he had Edgewing, his pride and joy. And he isn’t much of a reader, so the books weren’t of interest to him, either. He was making a mental note to bring his friends back another time, because they’d be more into all of that than he was, when he saw it.
“It gave you…a toy?” sensei had asked blankly.
“I think it was sort of a consolation gift, since I didn’t want the other stuff,” Yuichi had explained, a little embarrassed. He thought his sensei would have chosen differently if she’d been there.
From the surprise on her face that warmed into affection, he was pretty sure he was right. But all she said was, “You’re a good boy. Now give me twenty flips for going into a cursed temple without my permission.”
Yuichi slides his finger into the slip knot at the end of the string and lets the toy unwind and wind back up into his hand once. It’s like one of Botan’s fidget toys, except this one is potentially haunted.
“An electro-yoyo would be hands-down the coolest thing I’ve ever seen,” Yuichi says enthusiastically.
“That’s only because you haven’t seen my lab yet,” Donatello replies plainly. “Light, please.”
By the time Donatello is finished, most of the daylight is gone. The house is warmly lit, all the windows stark and yellow in the blue hour. The kids are still romping around like menaces but Leonardo is sitting on the porch steps, left leg stretched out carefully in front of him, Champion in his lap.
He smiles when he sees them coming, golden eyes glowing in the falling light like the house windows behind him.
“I’m so proud! All limbs intact, no visible injuries.”
Yuichi rolls his eyes. Donatello says, “Same won’t be said of you when I tell Raph you were gonna backflip off the roof.” Ignoring his twin’s betrayed squawking noises, he goes on, “What are you doing over here?”
“Uhh. Well, I was just telling Champy here that I’m feeling kind of sore. And my leg has been cramping up again. She was really understanding about it, even though she wanted to play—weren’t you, cariño ?”
He seems weirdly nervous about admitting to even that much. But it’s clearly a big step for him.
Donatello doesn’t outwardly react to this proof of progress except to ask for more information in a neutral tone. It reminds Yuichi of the way Botan will coax feral cats into the barn. Leaving a trail of breadcrumbs, leaving the door open, letting them decide on their own if it’s worth the risk of coming inside out of the cold.
Leonardo is a little cagey but ultimately forthcoming, and even guides Donatello’s questions along, the one area of their lives in which his knowledge eclipses his genius twin brother’s. The longer they talk, the more Donatello begins to rock slightly from side to side, tapping his fingers against his thighs rhythmically. They’re agitated gestures, but he seems really happy.
It’s nice.
“So what have you guys been up to?” Leonardo asks. “Did it really take that long to fix the bot?”
“Donatello’s going to weaponize my yoyo,” Yuichi announces, pleased as punch.
For a brief moment, surprise darts across Leonardo’s face. He looks touched, and oddly vulnerable, and then all of it hides neatly under blanket amusement.
“Tello, really? Weapons already? We’ve only been here for a couple hours.”
“In hopes that he uses it on you, yes.”
Donatello’s tone is scathing, but their shoulders knock together affectionately as Donatello sits beside Leonardo on the steps.
Yuichi sits on Donatello’s other side, yoyo in hand and half a dozen questions in mind. Eventually, Donatello brings up his holo-gauntlet and starts giving him a very technological lesson on low-current electrical discharges.
Leonardo seems content to listen to them talk. He tilts his head to watch, smiling with an edge of wonder and disbelief. Like he’s just woken up in a world where he gets everything he wants.

This might be a little difficult. But how about HCs with Fruits basket AU* with TDD with their S/O and how they would find out about the boys' secret.
*(Basically they will turn into one of the chinese zodiac animals (of your choice) when they weak, stressed or hugged by the opposite sex.)
I apologise if this is too difficult for you especially if you dont know about fruits basket.

Tumblr media
Ichiro Yamada
Ichiro’s zodaic animal is the rabbit
like Momiji and the rabbit zodiac, Ichiro is full of energy, curious, sincere, and very popular
Ichiro has never been ashamed to be who he truly is, but he knows that the curse has made him more wary of women
he still has lots of female friends, but he’s cautious to become too close to them (although he’s definitely had close calls in the past)
Ichiro didn’t grow up with much love from his parents so he pushes most of his love onto his brothers Jiro (the monkey) and Saburo (the rooster)
he’s still pretty optimistic about the future though, and he believes that one day he might be able to find someone who loves him just as he is
and that’s when you walk into his life
the two of you become fast friends, always chatting and hanging out, but you’re quick to notice Ichiro’s disdain for physical contact
his constant ducking and dodging make you think that he doesn’t like you in that way, but it’s really just because he doesn’t want to burden you with his secret just yet
so the two of you become closer and closer until eventually one day, Ichiro asks you out on a date
shortly after that, the two of you start dating and that’s when Ichiro starts to freak out about when he should tell you his secret
he decides to tell you one night when you’re having a movie night and it all sort of spills out
you sit in awe and wonder as he reveals his dark secret that he turns into a zodiac animal when under stress or hugged by a woman
he’s not sure how much you believe, but he doesn’t want to show you his rabbit form because he’s just too embarrassed by it
unfortunately, things really come to a head when the two of you are out in Ikebukero doing some last minute Christmas shopping
you hear someone call out Ichiro’s name and turn to see one of his old school friends running towards him
Ichiro warns him to stop, but his friend practically jumps up to him in excitement, pushing him right back...onto you
in an awkward backwards hug, there’s a puff of smoke and Ichiro is suddenly nowhere to be seen
you panic because this is what he had been telling you about and while his friend asks what happens and curious shoppers look on from around you, you quickly swoop up rabbit!Ichiro from inside the smoke and hug him in your arms
you don’t wait to explain anything, taking off with the rabbit in your arms
when you finally get back to your house, Ichiro thanks you and you set him down on the couch
it’s only then that you realize how adorable his rabbit form really is and you can’t resist placing a small kiss on his fluffy little forehead
Ichiro whines, saying that the more you touch him the longer he’ll be like this but you just muse that he’s so cute that wouldn’t really be a bad thing
once Ichiro is back in his human form, he’s quick to apologize, saying that he knows it’s a lot to take in and ask of you to keep a secret
but you just smile and blow him a kiss, saying that you love him and you’ll do anything to keep his secret
Ichiro is practically on the verge of tears from your words, feeling a sort of love that he’s never really felt before
and he can’t help himself as he throws himself onto you in an embrace, crying out as he turns into a rabbit in your arms once more
Tumblr media
Samatoki Aohitsugi
Samatoki’s zodiac animal is the horse
like Rin and the horse zodiac, Samatoki is quite wild but loyal, often suspicious of people before trusting them
Samatoki largely ignores his zodiac side and simply figures that if he refuses to date women, he won’t have to deal with his zodiac side
there have been a handful of times he’s passed out of exhaustion at the yakuza base and his underlings were all incredibly terrified and impressed that the boss managed to get a horse into his office
when he first meets you, he’s slow to want to have anything to do with you
he doesn’t want to be close to women, knowing that the zodiac curse effectively stops people from being loved and he doesn’t want to have to deal with the fallout of you being scared of him or worse, saying you don’t love him anymore
despite this, you keep showing up and charming Samatoki and he finds himself falling hard for you
you fall for him too and soon both of you are dating but with Samatoki putting a hard and fast rule that he wants to take it slow
unbeknownst to you, this rule is really just in place so that he has time to decide how to tell you the truth about the curse
unfortunately for him, he doesn’t get the chance to tell you in private because one night, when you’re both out on the town and walking home together, two thugs come up and try to steal your bag
of course, Samatoki is quick to beat them up and knock them out, but when he turns around to make sure you’re okay, he doesn’t have time to react as you throw your arms around him with a ‘thank you’
his eyes go wide and he can only mutter a ‘shit’ before there’s a pop and smoke fills the air as you fall to the ground
after a few moments, you find yourself staring up at a silver horse that’s staring down at you with big eyes
you look around in confusion, calling out for Samatoki when the horse suddenly talks and tells you not to freak out
but of course that only makes you freak out even more and you’re immediately on your feet with your hands out, trying to make sense of the situation
Samatoki sighs and decides that he has to tell you the truth, explaining the curse and saying that he plays the role of the horse in the zodiac
it takes you a while to wrap your head around this information, and as you are, there’s another pop and Samatoki is back, pulling on the clothes that were scattered around the ground
he prepares to leave, apologizing and saying that it’s probably best if you both go your separate ways but you’re quick to tell him to wait
explaining that you just need more of an explanation and that you want all of the details
that you still love him and that you want to make this work regardless of whatever curse might be haunting him
Samatoki is stunned and doesn’t believe you at first, but when you threaten to hug him again and feed him nothing but oats, he realizes that you really are telling him the truth
there’s a part of him that’s scared to believe that anyone could ever love him, but there’s another part that believes that if you really love him as strongly as you say you do, he’ll be loyal to you for the rest of his life
Tumblr media
Ramuda Amemura
Ramuda’s zodiac animal is the ox
like Haru, Ramuda has two distinct personalities that the zodiac curse has only amplified
while one side of him is happy-go-lucky, the other side is dark and dangerous making him feel that he could never be loved
and that he didn’t even deserve love
it’s extremely difficult for Ramuda to go through life without hugging any of the beautiful women that he sees, but somehow he makes do
he makes it a point to flirt, but never let them touch him, joking that he won’t do any of those kinds of things until he’s married
when he meets you, he treats you the same way, joking and flirting until he realizes that there’s something different about you
you don’t dismiss him like the others and you genuinely care about him and want to spend time with him
the two of you start dating and at first it’s casual but then it becomes more intense and Ramuda realizes how bad this could be for you
this makes his dark side flare up in an attempt to make you leave him, not wanting you to stay around him and get hurt
but you insist that you love him and that you know he would never hurt you like that
and in an attempt to stay by his side, you throw your arms around him and hold him tightly
but suddenly he’s not there in your arms and you look around, then down and realize that there’s a small pink cow standing where Ramuda stood
you immediately fall backwards with a cry, confused as to why there’s suddenly a pink cow in the middle of Ramuda’s shop
but cow!Ramuda just sighs and shakes his little cow head, saying that he knew something like this was going to happen and that he’s sorry you had to find out this way
he tells you about the curse that turns him into a zodiac animal when he’s hugged by a woman and you know that you wouldn’t have believed him if he wasn’t standing in cow form right in front of you
part of Ramuda is mad that you’ve revealed his secret, but in actuality he’s just angry because he’s scared that you’ll leave him now that you know about the curse
it takes you a few moments to pull yourself together, but then you’re smiling and saying that it’s unfortunate, but that he looks rather cute as a small pink cow
and even after Ramuda changes back into a human with a puff of smoke, pulling a nearby suit off the rack to change into, you still smile and say that you love him
Ramuda doesn’t understand, he doesn’t know if he ever truly will, but he wants to believe in you and your words
so he decides to stay with you and is secretly relieved that he doesn’t have to deal with the secret of the curse by himself anymore
Tumblr media
Jakurai Jinguji
Jakurai’s zodiac animal is the dragon
like Hatori and the dragon zodiac, Jakurai is calm and collected, charismatic and compassionate
also, he doesn’t actually turn into a dragon, but rather a seahorse
Jakurai is extremely careful of his surroundings, always making sure that he never gets embraced by a woman
the more pressing matter is that he still turns into a seahorse whenever he gets overstressed or sick
because of this, he always makes sure Hifumi and Doppo know when he’s feeling down so that they can be around when/if he changes and put him in a little glass of water
but Jakurai wasn’t expecting that he would ever fall in love
so when he falls hard for you, he knows it’s only a matter of time until you accidentally hug him or he accidentally turns into his animal
he decides that he needs to tell you the truth and he doesn’t want to leave it to fate, so one day he takes you to his apartment and sits you down
he explains the curse and all of it’s peculiarities, saying that he wants to tell you this now so you can leave the relationship if you can’t handle it
at first you think he’s joking, but then suddenly his arms are wrapped around you and there’s a puff of smoke and Jakurai is gone
but not completely gone because now there’s a tiny little seahorse on the ground and you’re freaking out because you thought it was gonna be a dragon but now he’s just a cute little seahorse but omg seahorses need water and you don’t want your boyfriend to die
Jakurai tells you to calm down and that he’s prepared a little glass of water for you to put him into which you do with shaky hands
it takes you a few minutes to come to terms with the reality of the situation, but when you finally do, Jakurai apologizes
he says that he understands if this is too much and he won’t fault you for breaking up with him, but of course you simply smile and say it’s okay
because you love him too much to be swayed by some curse
and also you think his seahorse form is kind of cute and you don’t mind that he’s so tiny when he’s like this
but then moments later there’s another puff of smoke and you blink twice, look up and immediately turn red because now Jakurai is wet and also not wearing any clothes
to which the doctor apologizes for once again and quickly puts his clothes back on
Jakurai is happy that you accept him for who he is unconditionally because he never believed that the zodiac curse would allow him to be loved
it’s going to bring you two closer together and Jakurai won’t want to let you go ever again

Hi! I'm planning on getting two rabbits soon cause I heard they like companions. Any tips for a new rabbit owner?
Oh heck yes! So for context, I am a fairly new rabbit owner--I got Momiji this past summer and he is the first rabbit anyone in my immediate family has had. I grew up with dogs and cats. So learning how to have a bunny has been a real learning experience.
A rabbit is not really low maintenance, is what I’ve learned. I was actually planning to get a cat after my previous roommate and Artemis-the-cat moved out. I ended up with Momiji instead because of Reasons (foster-in-law fail, basically), but I did a lot of reading before I committed because I was pretty worried. You don’t have to walk rabbits like a dog, but they do need quite a bit of space, consistent attention (for health and wellness) as well as socializing, supplies/items, and a specialized vet.
This got a bit long so it’s under the cut. Spoiler: I love my rabbit! But they’re different enough from dogs and cats that their needs can be surprising.
Below the cut: personality, space, behavior, vets/health, and stuff that costs money.
Their Personality
Like any animal, rabbits will have their own personalities. Momiji is very inquisitive (must sniff all new things, likes to hop on top of all furniture and things to get tall), and often socializes by chilling in the same room, but not right next to me. Rabbits are social and do need a lot of attention (or a pal). They can “purr” (chittering their teeth when happy), and Momiji loves it when I pet his nose and forehead the most. He also grooms me, and a rabbit tongue is closer to a cat tongue than a dog (not very wet, but also not rough).
He will sometimes sit on my chest, especially if I'm lying down, or he'll hang out on a surface like the bed or couch when I'm on the floor, so sitting up puts my head at his level. He doesn't mind if I give his [mostly-]adorable face many, many kisses, and sometimes sticks his face right next to mine (I'm assuming to make it easier to kiss or snuzzle, because that's what I always do and yet he keeps coming back). If he wants pets and I'm not paying attention, he'll force his face under my hand until scritches are dispensed.
Rabbits are prey animals so by nature they can be very skittish. Momiji can jump up from what appears to be dead sleep in approximately .034 seconds if he hears literally anything unusual or sudden (which includes sneezes and phone notifications). How much they tolerate being held will vary—Momiji is good at being held for short amounts of time but will start struggling after about 10 seconds. And rabbits are apparently pretty fragile creatures, so you really don’t want them twisting or jumping out of your arms. Speaking of, I need to trim Momiji’s nails because I’ve got a nice long slash across my clavicle from trying to prevent him from committing suicide via stairway the other day. (Trimming nails seems easier as a two-person job, so I’m willing to pay my vet.)
Speaking of personality: bonding rabbits is a Thing you will want to look into—I’ve gleaned it involves keeping them separated for a bit and then slowly introducing them and building up exposure, until they are safe together. Even if they’re siblings from the same litter, apparently a “baby bond” will break as they get older.
Space for Rabbits
Rabbits need a good amount of space—approximately 16 square feet (4x4 foot area) per rabbit minimum. Because of that, generally I see people recommending x-pens/dog playpen fencing instead of hutches. I got lucky and got some used x-pens (tall! To prevent hops!) from a dog breeder on FB Marketplace. As we’ve adjusted (and Momiji has mostly proven he can be trusted not to destroy furniture), he basically gets my whole guest room to himself when I’m not home, but I used to shut him in the cage. When I was pricing them (before I found them used), I was seeing around $80+ for a pen the right size. (And unless you’re going to jury-rig a ceiling, you want tall ones so they don’t just hop out.)
I’m still figuring out a flooring issue, since I keep him in a room with carpet. My current setup is a $4 plastic picnic blanket as a moisture barrier, covered in a non-fuzzy thrifted blanket that I can wash when needed. This helps keep a lot of his hay out of the carpet, as well as pee. I play to upgrade to a more solid flooring at some point; the FB rabbit groups often have people asking/offering suggestions I’ll check out.
When I am home, he now gets to free roam the house (close doors to off-limits places, like my roommate’s room, or my closet full of tasty shoes), but we worked up to this over several months. I carefully expanded his access (room – room + adjoining bathroom – previous + my room down the hall, etc.). I needed to be sure that he would consistently find his way back to his food and litter box, and use them, and that he wasn’t going to try and chew my house to shreds.
Speaking of chewing…
Rabbit Behavior
I saw someone call it “puppy-proofing on steroids” to describe what they needed to do to get their house rabbit-proof. Rabbits chew. What your particular rabbit chews on is up to chance.
I’m lucky because Momiji doesn’t do a lot of chewing—there’s no way to get him to understand what’s OK and what’s not. He lives in a room full of books, which have thus far lasted over 6 months without being nibbled. But even so: my TV stand is now blocked off with cardboard and stacks of boxes to prevent him from getting behind it—he chewed through the cord to my blu-ray player (had to buy a replacement cord off eBay) and my Chromecast cord (haven’t figured out if it can be replaced or if I need to buy a whole new gadget), I’ve blocked off the corner my modem and internet apparatus sit in as a precaution, and just last night I discovered he’s hit some wires in an extension cord, so I had to get my electrical tape to cover that, then tape it to the wall to keep it out of his way. Momiji has also developed a taste for my faux leather wallet, specifically. As in, I need to get a new one now. (And can’t leave my purse on my bed anymore, because that’s within rabbit-reach.)
Basically, with a critter like this, potentially anything at their level is something you might have to deal with being chewed, or protected. Other people have stories about all cords, baseboards, wooden furniture, etc.
Rabbits also thump their back legs when upset, angry, scared, etc. Momiji has thumped because my roommate’s dog startled him. He’s also thumped because my bedroom door was closed and he wanted in. Today he thumped, a LOT, from under my bed because I’m pretty sure he was annoyed that I was obviously awake and hadn’t fed him his morning pellets yet.
There’s also hormones and everything that entails. If you have a female rabbit, it’s heavily encouraged you get her spayed because apparently the risk of uterine cancer is super-duper high. I haven’t read if there is an associated high risk for unaltered males, but I need to discuss that with my vet because Momiji seems to have testicles that weren’t there before. But besides cancer, from what I’ve read spaying/neutering can also help with mating/courtship behaviors, territoriality, litter box habits, and aggressiveness. Momiji is pretty good about all of the above, thankfully (no problems, and he hasn’t sprayed me with urine as a declaration of love), but every animal is different.
Speaking of vets…
Veterinarians and Health
Rabbits need an exotic vet—they are unusual enough that for veterinary purposes, they qualify as “exotic.” Depending on where you live, that may limit your options. This means that their vet bills might be higher, especially a spay/neuter. The House Rabbit Society has a list of rabbit-savvy vets and some links to other lists, and you could also find an online group and ask for recommendations in your area.
Rabbits need to be eating/drinking constantly to avoid their digestive system going into stasis, which is a life-threatening condition that can kill rabbits within hours, so I have to keep his supply topped up and pay attention to any behavioral changes. I also have an emergency kit (food, gas drops, etc.) that I hopefully never need to use. The majority of their diet is hay and water; some formulated rabbit-specific pellets, and some fresh greens. You’ll want to do a search for what fresh foods are safe, and what aren’t or should only be given sparingly (anything sugary, including carrots, are a treat rather than a staple). I’ve also noticed that sometimes treats will be sold advertised for all small pets but will contain things bad for rabbits, like yogurt drops/coatings, so beware.
I pay close attention, both because I’ve read enough sad stories about someone’s beloved pet passing away in less than a day, but also because my vet said that the closest emergency veterinary care for rabbits (rather than cat/dog-focused) if I have an after-hours emergency is like, 3 hours away. And I live in a city!
So that costs money. As do other things:
Things That Cost Money
So besides veterinary care, and your cage, you need:
litter box (big! I use a large cat litter box, I’ve also seen people just use under-bed plastic storage boxes) (I actually bought 2 litter boxes, so I can fight my executive dysfunction by breaking up “clean the litter box” into the easier “swap in a new litter box” and “deal with contents of old litter box and clean it out” which can be done at a different time)
Stuff for the litter box (I use pine pellets from Tractor Supply because it’s like $7 for a 40-pound bag; you don’t want to use cat litter)
Water bowl (big! They drink SO MUCH water! Momiji has a medium-sized heavy ceramic dog bowl so he can’t tip it over, and he drains it if I don’t keep it topped up. When in doubt, go bigger and heavy) and food bowl, but since so much of their diet is hay and water, the food container isn’t so important
Maybe one of those food mats for animals, if you want any water splashes to be contained
Hay holder (yes, I can put hay directly in the litter box, but it lasts longer if he can’t kick it everywhere. At the same time, he needs to be able to sit in the litter box while munching)
Hay and pellets
Cleaning products (I have both Angry Orange Bio-Enzymatic Pet Stain Spray and Arm & Hammer Pet Stain remover for messes on cloth, Nature’s Miracle Urine Destroyer for the carpet, and Nature’s Miracle small animal cage cleaner spray for pee on hard surfaces)
Carrier(s)
Treats and toys, because who can resist?
Brush (maybe not an immediate need, but don't wait too long--rabbits can't vomit so you don't want them to ingest too much hair, especially during a shedding season) (if you get a fluffier/longer-haired breed, though, you'll DEFINITELY need one quickly)
Baby gate if you will need to block off a space without a door. I got a 48-inch one from Chewy and so far he hasn’t tried to jump it
Toys can mostly wait until you get to know your rabbits. I started off with some plastic baby stacking cups (would put a pellet or two in each one so he had to unstack to get them), some willow balls I found at the store, and some pressed hay cubes. I eventually made him a forage box filled with shredded paper, chopped toilet paper tubes, apple sticks, some rabbit-safe toys he didn’t care about, and then scattered some pellets/small treats in there so he has to dig around to find them. Most recent acquisition is a tube (or really, three tubes that connect at the center) that he politely hops through occasionally. I have more things, but he doesn’t play with them much, unless I somehow affix snacks to them. So start small (and cheap).
Both Chewy and Small Pet Select make it easy to buy everything; I get all my hay from SPS because their prices/amount worked best and I like a site dedicated specifically to small pets, and I really like their hay cubes as a treat (timothy hay/alfalfa blend, or just timothy hay); watching Momiji go to town on a little cube is insanely cute. Incidentally, I do definitely have a lot of treats for him (foraging blend I mix in the foraging box, small dried papaya chunks, meadow loop bites), but Momiji loves his pellets so much I can use them as treats if I want to entice him anywhere, or provide some foraging/finding enrichment after I leave.
Other
Going on vacation? Good luck finding a place you can trust to board your rabbit. At Christmas, I couldn’t take Momiji with me (hours-long car ride could probably be dealt with, but not finding space in a house full of 6 people, 2 cats and 3 dogs), but I was lucky that my roommate wasn’t going anywhere, so I paid them to pet-sit instead of having to find someone to come over a couple times a day. The whole space + socialization needs + consistent review of food/water availability were hard to figure out if that didn’t work out.
Find some rabbit-related groups (I've joined a couple on Facebook; there is one specifically for bonding which will likely be relevant to you since you're looking to get two) and sites (I've found The Bunny Lady helpful, and The House Rabbit Society has an entire section for new rabbit owners) and poke around--when everything is new and the amount of info is overwhelming, I personally find lurking and backreading a bit helpful, because it both gives info, and helps me start crystalizing the things that I do need to find out or ask, regardless of whether I ask in those places or not.
And because you mention getting two: unless they are spayed/neutered when you get them, you'll probably need to keep them apart, including cages with a minimum of several inches between them, until they are about 8 weeks post-op. I have seen, at a conservative estimate, twenty bajillion posts from people who ended up with surprise babies ("but they're so young!" "we thought they were both girls!" "we thought they were both boys!" "they only had access to each other for two minutes once!" "they’ve always been separated by cages!" "but they're siblings from the same litter!") so really, truly please believe me.
Kayt, you're a new owner, what are your sources?
First and mainly, my veterinarian, who is not just experienced working with rabbits but also owns them. A lot of the health stuff I ran past them to confirm. And also aforementioned FB groups, which I'm not citing specifically for privacy reasons, but I went and joined a bunch, so seeing what issues pop up or what people say (and cite) overall has been helpful. I also went and borrowed every book I could find in my public library system that dealt with caring for rabbits, and A House Rabbit Primer: Understanding and Caring for Your Companion Rabbit by Lucille Moore was very helpful and explanatory. There are some things in there that don't seem to have held up since it's original publication 17 years ago (waiting hours if your rabbit isn't eating; feeding your rabbit bread or yogurt), but as a companion tot everything else I think it's fine, and there's also a 2nd edition that was just published that is probably up-to-date.
All that to say: it's entirely possible I've gotten some things wrong, but I've tried to make sure my knowledge and practice is backed up by as many reputable sources as I can find.

[image set: 1) Digital watercolour-style illustration of three characters standing next to each other. Left to right: smiling woman with hair cropped to slightly longer than shoulder length holding flowers and a Buddha statue in one hand; a handsome monk with a frazzled expression; a sparkling round-faced Heian nobleman wearing the tall tate-eboshi and fanning himself. 2) Lineart of the same illustration. 3) Details of the three characters' facial expressions]
Byakken, Princess Nubatama, and Prince Momiji from ぬばたまは往生しない Nubatama wa Oujou Shinai (Nubatama Will Not Pass Away) by Kuze Banko!
I've had this on my list for a while, got around to reading it on the weekend and oh my goodness I am in love! It’s super fun and packed with stuff that is all up my alley. And these three are a huge part of the entertainment. The dynamic that they have as they go about solving mysteries and rendering assistance to people in their slice-of-Heian-era-lives, all while turning Heian tale tropes on their head, makes me chortle with glee.
More gushing below the cut~
Princess Nubatama (Nubatama-hime) is a noblewoman with the incredibly long luxurious black hair that marks a true Heian era beauty - and an equally long line of suitors. But she’s been possessed by a mononoke! and the famed rising star monk Byakken has been called upon to drive the demon out with his prayers.
-Or not. For we quickly learn that Nubatama isn’t possessed at all. Instead, she turns out to be an extremely bright, sharp and headstrong young woman who wants to see the world! She requests Byakken cut her hair and make her a nun to free her from the constraints of material society. It's a super shocking demand, and Byakken refuses. So she dramatically cuts her own hair, forcing her way into his life… and also into the lives of others!
Nubatama is a delightful female lead in a Heian setting. Her cheerful attitude, sly practicality, and straightforward compassion make her a fantastic character. Her relationship with Byakken is really charming and a joy to follow. I love their wonderful growing mutual support, not to mention her ability to put him in an apoplectic fit even when he agrees with her.
To absolutely no one’s surprise, I’m a huge fan of Byakken. Dubbed the incarnation of the Bodhisattva of Wisdom (Manjusri/Monju Bosatsu), he has many actual fans (as in, within the actual story itself) who fawn over him and want to listen to him chant sutras and exorcise demons all day long. The reality? He’d much rather hermit up in the mountains and study than interact with people. No such luck for he’s stuck in the great capital Heian-kyo dealing with terrifying screaming children on a regular basis (it’s the de facto exorcism technique of the day) and being egged on by his superiors to help fundraise for repairs to a five story pagoda/stupa (not for the first time, apparently, since it burned down twice??), while also basically being Everybody’s Mom and keeping people out of trouble. The contrast between his adoring fanbase’s perception of his handsome face and serene, enlightened manner and his actual frazzled private thoughts amuses me so much. He really makes me think of my favourite Tale of Genji character, Kaoru, if Kaoru actually managed to achieve his goal of becoming a monk. (They even have similar backstories! Or at least what’s been revealed thus far… hmmmmmm….)
And then we have the dashing, sparkling, best-dressed Prince Momiji (Momiji no Miya), Nubatama’s (former) betrothed whom I am fully convinced is the Hikaru Genji of this universe. He certainly seems to keep himself busy with lovers everywhere. Equipped with his tate-eboshi and elegant fan, he keeps randomly popping up in his oxcart to help Nubatama and Byakken out with the shenanigans they run into. As with the legendary Genji, the intentions behind Prince Momiji’s supportive actions may be less than honourable, which leads to many hilarious interactions such as a fight between him and Byakken that Nubatama breaks up. I think his design is amazing, he totally made me think of an exaggerated manga version of one of those classic Genjimonogatari artworks from the Tosa school of painting the moment I saw him!
Nubatama wa Oujou Shinai is only available in Japanese at this time. You can find it on various Japanese ebook sites - I read it on Renta!
https://renta.papy.co.jp/renta/sc/frm/item/275790/ - volume 1
https://renta.papy.co.jp/renta/sc/frm/item/216412/ - the separate issues including two chapters/stories past vol 1 I haven’t read yet
I really hope this is picked up for English distribution someday, though I appreciate the setting might be considered a little… niche?? My Japanese is very far from fluent so I'm sure I’ve missed quite a few details. But I'm grateful that I can discover it and read it digitally in this day and age!

Random Musings: Fruits Basket
OK I'm like just past the middle of the 2nd season.
Kyo and Yuki are sexy and all but Haru is sex on legs omg those forearms are aphrodisiac af.
Shigure is hot but dodgy af.
Momiji is not just adorable but also has more balls than all the other Sohma combined, he's so far the only one who's stood up to Akito.
Speaking of Akito, I fucking hate that bitch.
And Momiji's mum. How can she reject that ray of sunshine?! (full disclosure: I'm a rabbit in the Chinese zodiac so I may be biased)
Hana & Uo are the GOAT. Megumi too.
Someone pls kill Ayame, Kagura, and the guy from the student council they're just so fucking annoying.
Kureno has major Moblit (AoT) vibes.
I'm open to discussion but no spoilers pls! 😊

Momiji, Kyo, and the things they each do for love (part 2 of 5)
Tumblr media
So, the next time we see Momiji appear with Kyo, we get nearly an entire episode of them together! And it's a hugely significant episode in setting up the way Momiji impact's Kyo's character arc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Momiji walks home with Tohru after her job. Kyo reacts with his usual annoyance, giving Momiji a noogie. (I love that this is Kyo's go-to whenever Momiji shows up. It's adorable.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Momiji then announces he's taking Tohru to a Sohma-owned onsen for White Day, but Tohru doesn't seem happy.
Tohru: A hot spring is so expensive... and I'd be going without Mom! Shigure: Whoah, Tohru-kun. It's just a hot spring, okay? It's not Paris or anything! Tohru: B-but... Momiji: He's right! And if you're happy, your Mutti will be happy for you! Or... do you not want to...? Tohru: I do. I'm happy. Momiji: Yuki and Kyo will come, too! Kyo: Where do you get off just deciding that, you brat? Momiji: Aw, don't say that! Let's go! What about you, Yuki? Are you against it, too? Yuki: I'll go. Why not? Momiji: Yuki says he's coming! Kyo: That makes me want to go even less!
Here, Momiji is manipulating Tohru into going with him. When Momiji asks her, "Or... do you not want to...?" we fill in the end of the sentence for him, assuming he's saying, "Do you not want to go?"
But what Tohru hears is "Do you not want to make your mom happy?"
We know not to trust Tohru when she tells us she's happy; we know she's hiding so much pain behind her constant smile. She's even crying when she tells Momiji she's happy. (And I'm sure Kyo feels horribly guilty here when she mentions her mother.)
Momiji may be manipulative, but he's still kind. Wanting to see Tohru smile, he announces that Yuki and Kyo will come, too, to try and make her happy, but Kyo pushes back.
There is so much richness in this single conversation, but what I love most is how it encapsulates the differences between what Kyo and Momiji value most, both for themselves and in their relationship to Tohru.
Momiji uses pleasure to distract from his own pain. In his view, having as much fun as possible is the secret to life, and pain is to be avoided at all costs. When it comes to Tohru, Momiji wants to spend as much time with her as possible and make as many happy memories together as they can. He wants her to smile, even if he has to manipulate people (including Tohru) for it to happen.
Kyo, on the other hand, cherishes agency. He knows he faces a future behind bars, so of course he bristles when other people try to make decisions for him (including relatively innocuous ones, like Momiji saying he'll come to the hot spring). Kyo still believes Tohru needs to be protected (especially from him), so his approach is generally to give her space and scold her when he thinks she's not being cautious enough. He's also extremely aware of the pain Tohru feels over the death of her mother, even if he's suppressing that. Anything that could bring that pain into sharper relief is a huge red flag for him. He wants her to be safe, even if that means he can't enjoy her company.
Tumblr media
It's at this point that Shigure mentions Tohru is a month behind on her payments toward her school trip. (Also, look how Momiji is still hugging Kyo! So cute!)
When everyone (except Momiji) figures out it was because of the Valentine's Day chocolates, Kyo barely stops himself from flying into a rage, telling Tohru to go take a bath, now.
She leaves, and when Yuki asks why they didn't catch on, Kyo snaps that it's because she hides her feelings with a smile.
This shows us how well Kyo already understands Tohru. I also suspect his anger is not really at Tohru, but at himself for failing to protect her.
Tumblr media
Next, Kyo starts venting about how stupid she is, how she'll end up deep in the hole one day, etc... which is when Momiji calmly speaks up and tells them about a book one of his classmates brought in to school, and we're treated to one of the most memorable sequences in the whole series: The Foolish Traveler.
Tumblr media
Momiji's choice to tell that particular story in response to Kyo's complaints shows just how well he understands both Tohru and Kyo, and that his own cheerfulness is a conscious choice. We see that he's someone who believes looking past loss and seeing the good in a situation is a virtue, and he admires the foolish traveler (and Tohru) for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really love the way this sequence was drawn. As Momiji is telling the story, Kyo and Yuki are shown with their eyes obscured, so Momiji's are the only eyes we see, except when he's taking time to reflect on how he interprets the story.
Everyone in class laughed. They called it a dumb story. But I closed my eyes and thought about it. I thought about the traveler who was swindled out of everything but her head, and still cried and said, "Thank you." And what I decided was... what a lovely person. It's a waste of time to think about loss or life getting harder. The traveler never thought about that stuff. Even if other people think that makes her an idiot, I just don't. That's all. Even if other people think it's worth tricking her, I just won't. I'll just want to make her happy for real. Yuki, Kyo, what about you? Do you think she was an idiot after all? What do you think when you close your eyes?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's telling that the very next scene is Kyo agreeing to go to the onsen with Tohru after all. (This is honestly one of my favorite Kyoru moments and I think of it as the first sheet scene.)
Kyo tries to give himself an out, ("Though maybe you're fine with me not going...") but Tohru is ecstatic. Look how happy she is! And when she smiles and tears up, it's genuine this time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kyo naturally melts into a puddle of goo at Tohru's reaction (is this the first time we get the shojo bubbles with them?), and Momiji's the one to call him out on it, loudly pointing out Kyo's "heart eyes" to everyone. This is now the second time Momiji has verbalized Kyo's feelings for Tohru- and I believe he's the only character to have done so at all by this point. (Also, peep Momiji still hugging Kyo after Yuki wakes up! Cuuuuute!)
They arrive at the onsen, and Okami (Ritsu's mother, the proprietress) shows them their rooms.
Kyo: So this means I've gotta share a room with damn Yuki? Okami: I see you two still don't get along. I'll put up screens to partition the room. Please rest easy. Kyo: That's not the issue! Why do I even have to be here with him at- Momiji: I bet you're just saying that 'cause you wanna sleep in Tohru's room! Kyo: Huh!?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Momiji knows exactly how to press Kyo's buttons. But, more importantly, he's stopping Kyo from saying something he'd regret, something that might hurt Tohru's feelings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Okami loses her shit at Kyo, Momiji asks to bathe with Tohru, and Kyo immediately tells him off. After Yuki successfully scolds Momiji, he asks to share a room with Tohru, thereby doing exactly the thing he was teasing Kyo about just moments earlier.
I think, to Momiji, wanting to spend as much time as possible with Tohru is just the most obvious thing in the world, so naturally, it must be what Kyo wants, too!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the baths, when Kyo is about to destroy the ping pong table after failing to score against Yuki, Tohru asks him to battle (probably to defuse the tension between them). Momiji encourages Kyo to play, and right after he does, we cut to Kyo playing with Tohru.
I think this is a small example of how Momiji gets Kyo to spend more time with Tohru. The onsen trip itself is a bigger example, of course, but even little things like encouraging Kyo to play ping pong with her help push them together.
Kyo and Momiji start playing each other while Tohru leaves to check on Yuki, and just look how happy they are! Cuuute!
Tumblr media
I also love the chaos of this ending. Okami is using Kyo as a crutch. He complains, but doesn't stop her from doing so. Tohru asks Momiji if he'll be starting middle school and is shocked to learn he's only a year younger than them. Kyo is grouchy when Momiji reveals he and Haru will both be coming to Kaibara, but Kyo softens pretty much immediately, merely expressing surprise that Haru was allowed in with his unique hair.
Kyo almost seems to express affection - to both Momiji AND Tohru - by acting irritated on the surface. (What's extra cute is that Hajime kind of does this, too, always seeming somewhat exasperated at Mutsuki despite the fact that they're obviously in love.)
Anyway, this is among my very favorite episodes of Fruits Basket, and I hope you enjoyed reading this!
