i don’t talk about this aspect of the series much but the portrayal of tohru’s grieving process is so poignant and heartbreaking. like i think it’s one of the things fruits basket did best.

i think that in grief it’s not that they died, because it’s hard to even comprehend that, it’s that they’re gone. Like something was once there and now it’s not. tohru keeps her mom with her at all times, with the picture, the lessons she’s been taught, the anecdotes.

i also think how she interacts with people regarding it is very accurate, she gets insecure in season 2 over discussing her mom too much, because she’s afraid she’s making the zodiac feel bad and making it all about her. i think this resonates with those who have lost people and don’t know how to interact with others over it. she doesn’t want to take away attention from others, but she doesn’t want to never talk about her mother.

and finally, tohru’s need to help isn’t just inherent kindness (the series has said kindness is a choice), while she is kind, she cannot bear more loss. it also allows her to not look inward and think about what she wants for herself, which is why it took her so long to realize her feelings for kyo. one of the most important plot lines and conflicts of the series still stems from the very beginning, because that is how much grief can color your life.

her allowing herself to live for herself, is a form of healing from all she’s been through. and i think her mom would be proud :,)

Why Tohru Honda is not a Mary Sue

Definition of a Mary Sue: "inexplicably competent across all domains, gifted with unique talents or powers, liked or respected by most other characters, unrealistically free of weaknesses, extremely attractive, innately virtuous, and/or generally lacking meaningful character flaws" - Wikipedia

Tohru is not "inexplicably competent across all domains, gifted with unique talents or powers". She is competent in terms of domestic tasks and emotional intelligence/empathy because of her past. She grew up with a single mother who spent most of her time working. In order to help her mother, Tohru took over the majority of the domestic tasks and learned how to do these well. She has high emotional intelligence because her mother taught her well, as Kyoko is also shown to have high emotional intelligence. Being kind is not a unique talent/power. Tohru also has things she is bad at. She's explicitly shown to be bad at and struggle in school. She's also bad at taking care of herself and she can be a bit ditzy/oblivious. She's bad at martial arts/fighting, despite her mother having been a badass.

Tohru is liked/respected by most other characters, but again, she has high emotional intelligence and is a very kind and caring person. Why wouldn't she be liked by most characters, who all have some form of trauma and who all desire love and care and kindness?

Tohru is not extremely attractive. She's a cute girl, but she's not a great beauty. In fact, she's surrounded by the Sohma family, who are all extremely beautiful, and her two friends are also prettier than her.

Tohru is innately virtuous, but this is something she tries extremely hard to be and is something that she learned. Her mother taught her how to understand other people and the power of just being kind and she's carried that life lesson throughout her life.

She has meaningful flaws that drive the story. She's very stubborn when she thinks something is right, and she'll push even where she isn't wanted. Pushing Kureno worked out, but she had no idea whether or not Kureno felt the same way as Arisa and she didn't care. She has deep, unprocessed trauma regarding her mother's fairly recent death that also strongly impacts the story. She's careless with herself and will put herself in harm's way without considering the impact this could have on others (this is not a characteristic of a Mary Sue, but a flaw of a hero who will hurt themselves and their loved ones in order to help people). She avoids conflict when it's only herself on the line, to her own detriment.

Tohru is written with far too much complexity and nuance to truly be a Mary Sue. It's fine to think Tohru is bland, but to call her a Mary Sue and mean it is an insult to Natsuki Takaya.
