Rewatching Masters of Sex:  Volume 1

Season 1 Episodes 1-7

So two months ago I mentioned I was rewatching Masters of Sex.  Well, two months later, I’m now on episode seven, so I’m making progress!  Anyway, I decided I need to pick up the pace, and I figured since my Tumblr account has about as many new posts as Showtime has clever series ideas, I decided I'll catalog my journey rewatching this great show and grade the episodes as I go along!  See if any of them are better or worse than I remember (since this is the first time I’ve rewatched the show since 2017), if they still hold up.  You know, for content!

A few thoughts...

The Pilot definitely feels like the most prestige episode of the series.  Maybe it’s the fact that they actually filmed exteriors on a University.  I think that might have made me like the setting of the first season more, if they filmed more often down University corridors instead of what is clearly the Sony set.  I really have to remind myself “Oh yeah, they’re at a college hospital”.

The ADR on this show is worse than I remembered.  There are some times you hear a character speak when the camera’s not on them and it’s so obvious they added that in a recording booth in post production.  Maybe because I’m rewatching the show with headphones on, but it really stands out.  I’ll give an example so I can show I’m not crazy: in Season 1 Episode 1, around 44m 29s.  Or, when they didn’t even bother cutting away, in Season 1 Episode 7, around 27m 34s, “You nearly got killed tonight Barton.  For sitting in a car.”

God, Ethan sucks.  The cruel irony is that I have the same exact name as him except for two letters.  For a bit of perspective, imagine if your name was Adolf Hitlow or Hannibal Lectad.

I’m pretty sure that Ethan Haas is just Dennis from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

But on the subject of Ethan Haas, this character is so awful.  I think it’s admirable that Michelle Ashford attempted to turn a woman-beater and all-around-horrible person into a “pleasant” guy, and I respect her for taking on that challenge.  However, it’s quite possible that Ethan Haas is even more insufferable in the later half of season one than he was in the first half.  I can’t put my finger on it.  It could be because he acted as a cock-block to the Bill/Virginia relationship turned from literal-woman-beater to holier-than-thou dickwad WAY too fast.  I would say this is one of my main criticisms of the first season is Ethan Haas in general, although, even though the writers failed to make him likable in the later half of this season, I do respect the writers for taking on that challenge.  There is a certain point where a character reaches the point of no return, and Ethan managed to go there before the Pilot was even over.

As for the rest of the episodes, I enjoyed “Race to Space” a lot more than I remembered.  I used to classify it as my least favorite episode of season one, and now I can say that’s certainly not the case (we haven’t even gotten to “Love and Marriage” yet!).

“Catherine”, “Brave New World”, and “All Together Now” were perhaps a series-high trio of episodes.  I’d probably say “Brave New World” is my favorite episode of the season so far, mainly because of the shows depiction of 1950s Florida and it gets the whole Bill-Virginia relationship going.  On a side note, I’m glad the writers took their time to get to the Bill-Virginia relationship.  Apparently Showtime wanted them having sex at the end of the Pilot, Thank GOD they didn’t do that.  I’m shocked Showtime let them wait until the end of episode six to get this going, and I’m glad.  They let Michelle Ashford take her time.  You did good, Showtime, by not listening to your instincts.

1. Three ships: Of course, I'm putting my beloved Aruani first. I love them too much. They're my comfort ship and my motivation to write. Second, I'll go with Everlark. They're similar to aruani so it's really no surprise. And lastly... I'm struggling to pick between Odesta, Yumihisu and Hitlowe so I'll just leave it at that.

2. First ship: Ah, the nostalgia. Its Travlyn (Travis x Katelyn) from Aphmau's MyStreet series... Yeah...

3. Last song: Ooh its "The very first night" by Taylor Swift! I was just listening to it on my way to school

4. Probably Anyone But You. I don't typically watch movies but my best friend wanted to watch it with me. It was quite funny.

5. Unfortunately, I've been in a massive reading slump since last year. I've been trying to get through "Fourth Wing" for the past 3 months as it was a gift from my dad. I might have to get Suzanne Collins to pull me out.
