*The maze runner fanart*

Not finished but god I love this man (he’s so German shepherd bf coded)
Gally from The Maze Runner (especially the movie bc in the books he’s such a real asshole help) has been a huuuuuuge part of my teenage years, I think he even was one of my first biggest fictional crush
The guy was just so misunderstood, he was scared and trying to protect the only thing he knew : the glade.
Everyone hated him for acting like a strong minded but self-centered dude always against Thomas and the others, but let me ask you something :
As much as you love Thomas (and believe me, I do too), what would have you done if the only place and people you cared for were slowly starting to get destroyed just because of a stranger who came only a few days ago?
I Hope you get my point here, not to forget the guy had become such a great man in the third movie (and hot asf too, sorry to state facts hehe)

Yup, I’m a Will Poulter Stan since day one.

it’s crazy to think about the fact teresa literally spent her entire life working for wicked. she basically created the entire idea for wicked when she was sent through the flat trans because she was the first immune. she spent her entire life dedicated to finding a cure which makes sense why she was so desperate in the end. she didn’t know any better because all she had was wicked. and she spent her last moments in the building, even though she could’ve escaped. she was the one who started it all and she ended it all when the wicked headquarters collapsed.

summary: N/A warnings: ROUGH DRAFT, this story/drabble may contain violence, blood, and smut? maybe? wc: N/A in progress
The first time he sees her is late in the day - eyes trained on the doors in anticipation for what Chuck's promised. Machines built into stone, coming to life just before the sun begins to set. It's insanity, and a piece of him believes it was all some elaborate trick they played on every boy brought up through the box. Some sort of initiation, and it was sick. He pictures them all gathered, looks of joy in their faces while the newcomer spun out of control, unable to grasp onto this new reality. Thomas felt as if his mind had been torn not in two, but completely apart in scattered pieces. Shards of memory scrambled in with this new life - one that seems impossible, and too cruel for anyone to manifest. "Right on time," the shorter boy states with a wide and silly grin, almost pleased to share this moment with his new friend. To prove him wrong in a matter of minutes. The Newbie spots a dark haired boy first - shirt tight around well trained biceps, coated in sweat from a long day spent on the move. She rounds the same corner just after him - dirt stains paired with her own exhaustion, cheeks red and focus locked straight ahead - on freedom. A cloth lays tight against her face, concealing one eye, where multiple scars trail out from beneath and down towards her chest. He feels nauseous - not at the sight, but rather the idea of an unknown tale, and how it all came to be. Neither of them slow to a steady stride until each foot lands on warm grass, moving with purpose and ignoring the sight of a new Glader. She doesn't see him - but he sees her. Brown eyes are glued to her back as she joins others at the steel door, following the small group into the shadows of a mysterious building. "That's Gwen," Chuck chimes in with a smug expression, as if hearing the mental torment Thomas put himself through. "Didn't ask," is his dry retort, making a sad attempt to shake away the daze he felt trapped within - gaze still locked on the quiet building, heart aching to know its secrets. "You will. Everybody does." Thomas’ head turns, a look of confusion in his eyes.
What was so special about the girl named Gwen? Why do they care so much?
"Only girl in the glade." Thomas can't be sure if it's the boom of his heart rattling in his ears, or the metalwork coming to life inside the maze, but it renders all thoughts static.
The only…one?
"Don't get smart, Greenie. You're nothin' special."

My ranking of The Maze Runner books because im bored.
Fever Code. it's the best book in the series, period. newtmas is at its best.
Kill Order. i know a lot of people don't like this one but i love it. I loved seeing how the whole pandemic and disasters in the world began.
Maze Runner. the one and only, the place where you fall in love with everyone for the first time. also, The Glade is my favorite location in the entire saga.
Death Cure. the epilogue is my favorite of all the books, although i feel the ending is the weakest, i'm a big fan of all the adventure and angst feeling in here.
Scorch Trials. I always felt it was a shame that the movie strayed so far from the original plot. but I prefer movie!brenda tbh. dashner can't write romance at all (or women? maybe that's the issue here).
Crank Palace. it's okay don't get me wrong, and I always appreciate more newt content, i just feel dashner could have done a liiiiittle more.
I really feel like I love Fever Code and The Kill Order so much because they contribute a lot to the world building, and makes the experiences we have with Thomas in the three main books a lot more... well, it makes more sense, and gives another perspective. and it seems very special in my head.

If you want to read the Maze Runner books, but the size of the universe is intimidating, here’s my recommendation.
Obviously, you’d need the main trilogy, The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure. But after that is where it gets optional and interesting.
The Kill Order is the origin of WICKED and the flare, and is very good for anyone who wants more exposition and world-building. As well as a deeper look into Teresa and her motivations.
The Fever Code is the origin of the maze and the gladers. It’s very bts-heavy, and dives deep into Thomas’ motivations, as well as his relationships, not only with his friends, but the people in charge as well. It’s also where you want to go if you want more backstory on Newt, both his life before WICKED and during. Also if you just wanna see Newt living rent free in Thomas’ head for three hundred-something pages.
Crank Palace is for us mentally ill Newt-girlies (gender neutral) who just want to see him happy and loved, and is somehow naive enough to think we’ll get the former in this novella.
The sequel series is also heavy on what was going on behind the scenes for Newt, but it’s a whole other commitment, especially since it’s an ongoing series. I’d mostly recommend it if you read everything else and miss the universe and want to go back. I will say, tho, Crank Palace is imperative to these two books.
There’s also the short e-book, The Maze Runner Files, which contains some exposition, and some short stories about Thomas, Minho and Frypan.
Now, everything I listed that isn’t the main trilogy is a fully optional read, they are not necessary. However! I will list the entire series, both in chronological order and my recommended first-time-reading order, in case anyone else might want to try all of it.
So the chronological order goes as follows:
The Kill Order, The Fever Code, The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure, The Maze Runner Files, Crank Palace, The Maze Cutter, The Godhead Complex
And for my recommended reading order for first time readers:
The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure, The Kill Order, The Fever Code, The Maze Runner Files, Crank Palace, The Maze Cutter, The Godhead Complex
TLDR
The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure are must-reads
The Kill Order is for world building and Teresa
The Fever Code is for maze building, Thomas and Newt
The Maze Runner Files is an add-on that is wholly unnecessary for understanding the context of any of the books, but is just kinda fun
Crank Palace is for Newt and being very very depressed
The Maze Cutter and The Godhead Complex is for continuing in the universe, longing for Newt and depression

It is now time for the fateful day I talk about Maze runner, so up ahead there WILL be spoilers for almost all the TMR books.
[THE FEVER CODE, THE CRANK PALACE, THE MAZE CUTTER SPOILERS ARE UP AHEAD]
Let's talk Keisha and Dante. I made a simplified version of this on Reddit, but I can't go any longer without fully writing my thoughts out.
Keisha and Dante both were supposed to be side characters, people that gave newt a final purpose in life. He said it himself that they had given him something to live for, to finish his days off by doing something good. They ended up being a lot more than just side characters and I think we all know it.
Let's start off with chronological order, so that I can try to make this post somewhat understandable lol.
- Newt escapes the berg outside Denver, and roams a "abandoned" neighborhood. This is where he meets Keisha and Dante. She informs him that they need to run immediately or they are gonna be taken somewhere unpleasant and all around gross and icky. Newt first struggles figuring out what is happening and why he should care but eventually gets the hang of it. Newt seems pretty out of it for someone who just made a major decsion in his life. He's just calmly sitting by a lamp post watching cranks roam the streets untill the munies come by looking for cranks. The three don't really get far before some immunes find them there, saying they need to check them for the flare virus. Keisha says they have the virus so don't even bother checking them. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Keisha doesn't want to be checked for the virus, infact immediately admits she has the virus in front of the person. All this to avoid being checked? Why? Becausse Keisha is more than likely immune to the virus and Dante probably is too. (Newt also mentions he had a feeling that Keisha was immune too near the end of the book) The guy tells them they need to take them away, to the pits obviously but he never directly says that. Keisha tries to get them to let them be and just walk away, far from Denver, but the immune resists. This is where Keisha shoots one of them and newt kills the other.
All of this reaction from Keisha about being checked and why? She's supposed to be infected, to have the virus eating away at her sanity like it is newt, and with a child the extra stress should be taking the absolute biggest tole ever. With dante, she should be taking every opportunity to try and escape the inevitable fate of the pits, but she isn't. She definitely isn't and infact is freely and immediately admitting she has the flare.
- Keisha doesn't ask many questions, infact she forbids newt from asking how her entire family died. She spends an entire half page telling newt to never ask her that question, and when he finally agrees we don't hear about that untill later in the book. This isn't anything major, this a truamtic event for the both of them and bringing up their past does no good. Keisha though never seemed not even once phased by the fact that Newts entire existence had just saved her and her son from death. She never questioned much who the 'she' was that the munie guards brought up. Maybe this was just part of her personality but Keisha knew everything without asking anything. She never was curious about newts past, but seemed to know enough about it to get her by. She didn't seem to care about the maze trials, or ever bring them up voluntarily. Newts past was supposed to be hidden from her but it felt more like she had just known the entire time, with also the forbidden past of her own that she eventually talked about. This section isn't as important as the first one but it's still worth while to note.
- newt came back from a odly truamtic stroll through the crank Palace only to find that Keisha was no where to be found. Only Dante remained and apperantly a note that he skipped over in his panic. He ran out of the house with Dante and found Keisha and demanded an explanation for why she not only left her child alone but stole newts belongings. She claims that she knew Dante would be safe with newt and that she had left his journal and knife but took everything else. She planned to sell everything, to bargain her way out of the crank Palace to find her daughter, jackie. Newt has no idea how she even knows this untill she holds out cellphone. Fully functional, still has a charge and she checks it whenever newts NOT around and felt the need to keep it hidden from newt. Newt has no idea how she has this phone, because in all the maze runner books, we have never EVER seen a single person with a cellphone. She claims it still has charge and that her brother (who was claimed to be dead, murdered by Keisha husband, along with her daughter) had texted her and said they had survived and given her their location.
This is incredibly important to Keisha's character, becauase HOW did she get that. Keisha is only late 20's - early 30's, which means she hasn't been alive long enough to know the world pre sun flares and the flare. The world's been damned for a long time, so how on earth had she managed to find this phone, keep it charged long enough and if she had randomly found it after her family died, how had her brother contacted her?
I'll get to the point since this post is already so incrediblely long.
I think Keisha was working for WICKED, Ava Paige keeps tabs on newt obviously. (Janson telling thomas about newt being in danger at Denver, her need to keep newt alive in the fever code despite the waste of resources and time it was when they had hundreds of immunes, and then munie guards and people talking about newt, almost spreading whispers and sharing facts about newt to the point he had a gang ready to murder for him, and then the wicked gaurds showing up to Keisha's meeting place and using the family to force newt to "record something" we never find out what this something is though) Keisha obviously was carefully guideing newt through the stages of this, showing him the way of the world, to keep him alive more than anything. I feel like in exchange for helping newt, Keisha was promised her family by Ava Paige. Keisha also learned something from this though, that newt was her savior, he had given her a chance at survival. Which would explain why she was so grateful for newt even though he really didn't do anything. (he also points this out himself) her secret wicked agreement staying hidden but her gratitude towards newt giving her this chance totally explained. I definitely think that if Keisha was tasked with keeping newt safe enough, and when she realized justbhiw much he was suffering, how much the flare was affecting him and how he was holding it all back for her and her children she realized that the motherly bond she had formed with him strung more than just a few tears. I think becausse of this, she let newt go on his own, to find something or someone to end everything that made him so miserable. She couldn't end his life on her own, and newt wouldn't have ever of asked that of her but against wickeds wishes she might have just let newt leave. Her reward for helping him was here and now the least she could for him was let him leave, and take a couple of pounds of weight of his already heavied shoulders.
Newts death wasn't supposed to happen, he wasn't suoposed to die ( we know this from ava but also becausse newt is found to be the cure in the maze cutter) but Keisha had given him that chance to be free. Despite the pain that hit him from the swipe being removed and all, she had changed his Outlook on life, gave him the motherly love he missed and needed. His life was inherently better with Keisha and she did all she could for him. The mission wicked supposedly sent her on became less about her biological children and more about the one that she adopted along the way.
So could Keisha have been working for WICKED? Did WCKD give her the task, and the phone? Did she falter from her mission becauase she suddenly saw newt as her own child? And will we ever see her children in the other installations of the maze cutter
