@tolkienfamilyweek Day 2: Siblings
You know what gets me about Celegorm and Curufin specifically? They are quite possibly two of the least redeemable characters in the Legendarium (saying a lot) and are equally fucked up but in fundamentally different ways. Curufin believing in his father absolutely even after everything and still being convinced in his righteousness and resenting others for standing in the way of what the sees them as morally entitled to whereas Celegorm just doesn’t think in terms of right or wrong anymore, he’s not trying to be ‘good’ he has a goal and he’ll take any path available to achieve it.
Purely selfish in both cases but Curufin has a god complex (or more like he puts Feanor on a pedestal and agrees with his god complex) and hates the Valar with a vitriol and has successfully bent himself over backwards to consider all his actions entirely justified. Whereas Celegorm genuinely doesn’t bother justifying himself at this point and has the ‘well we’re all doomed anyway so who the fuck cares anymore?’ attitude to future actions. He doesn’t hate the Valar for the same reasons some of the others do, he doesn’t distrust them or believe they’re evil, he feels his people were abandoned and resents it because he knows he was in the wrong but Morgoth is very clearly worse and haven’t they suffered enough yet?
Very different and terrible kinds of evil, but equally evil. Do they really understand each other’s moral compass (or lack of it)? Probably not, but they accept it anyway. They know that nothing they do will ever disgust or horrify the other because they’re both as bad as each other and there’s something freeing (if decidedly unhealthy) about that lack of judgement.
I am so obsessed with the dynamic of two mass murderers with no morals whatsoever never once contemplating stabbing each other in the back because they love each other just as much as any of the heroes love their family. Think about it, Curufin has his father’s name, his face, his skill set, and we know these are the things that Curufin would consider of utmost importance. There’s no way Curufin doesn’t think he should be on a throne, he was most probably out for Fingolfin’s and canonically out for Finrod’s. But he wasn’t out for Finrod’s throne to take himself, he wanted to place Celegorm on it.
He thinks insanely high of himself and thinks he’s worthy to be a king but he clearly believes Celegorm just as worthy and has trust that his brother would value his input and treat him as an equal, which doesn’t seem that far fetched because, even with all the clashes you’d think would come between two strong personalities like them, they ruled Himlad jointly for years with no power struggles. What’s more it seems like this was by choice, that instead of ruling their own realms, which you’d imagine proud people like them would want to do, they preferred to share Himlad in an equal partnership.
Curufin is so terrible even his own son, and presumably wife, can’t bear to be around him anymore but Celegorm? He’s never going to leave him, never, they are always going to back each other up and everyone else will suffer for it.
One of my favourite moments with them is when everything goes to hell, they’ve been banished, Finrod’s dead, Luthien escaped and then, to top it all of, they try to get revenge on one maiden and a mortal and not only get utterly trashed but Celegorm’s dog who he’s had since childhood and kept as a companion through everything up until this point finally changes sides with no warning whatsoever and chooses Luthien over him (on another note, what the hell Huan? You seriously haven’t had moral qualms before now? Even if this was the last straw for you could you not have picked a better moment than when Celegorm looked like the only person who was going to stop his brother being throttled to death?)
So Curufin’s almost died and Celegorm, after they got absolutely humiliated and have lost everything due mostly to the two people in front of him and he’s not known for his ability to control his anger, is ready to leave. After Curufin is released Celegorm takes him unto his horse and starts to ride off with him before Curufin initiates again and fires after them. Celegorm is the hunter among them, presumably he’s far better with his own bow and he definitely wants revenge, but he doesn’t shoot after them. He’s willing to give up his revenge for his brother’s safety and that’s more of a show of love for them than anything else could be.
All I’m saying is that if they didn’t get to die in each other’s arms and be together at the end they’d been rushing to side by side their whole story….

can we talk about how himlad apparently means “cool plain” in sindarin?
i know, i know, im sure it’s referring to the temperature, but i just can’t stop picturing something like
curufin: what shall we name our new land, brother?
celegorm: how about “cool plain…” cause it’s on a plain and it’s pretty cool, heheheheh, get it?

Love, love, love the birds worldbuilding in Himring.
I've actually been digging through links looking for birds that occupy Nan Elmoth and the surrounding area - Himlad, northern Estolad, the banks of the Celon.
Any thoughts about the flying critters living around there?
I’ll start with Himlad!
Flora, fauna, geography and environment masterlist
Himlad was a realm in Eastern Beleriand, bordered on the West by the river Aros and on the East, its tributary, Celon. It means ‘cool plain’ in Sindarin and was described simply as a cold region, likely due to its proximity to the March and thus to the Iron Mountains, the cold fronts of which extend throughout the surrounding regions.
I have imagined it as a steppe environment with an ecology similar to Mongolia. We have little information on environment other than the description of cold but some speculation can be done due to the habitat and through looking at similar real habitats, mostly in Northern Europe and temperate parts of Asia as well as parts of North America which Tolkien was inspired by the prairies in (source: The Flora of Middle Earth)
As always I include world building notes at the end so it’s not just a list of species! And as always please consider the list incomplete! There are so so many birds and I often go back to add more. Feel free to request a more specific prompt to focus on or a more specific family of birds
In the plains and steppe: tawny pipit (migratory, traveling west in the winter), David’s snowfinch, brown accentor, Siberian stonechat (also found in shrubs), rosy starling, swan geese, steppe partridge, pallas’s sandgrouse, great bustard, common cuckoo (migratory), cornrail (migratory, avoids the more arid parts), bearded vulture, crested lark, golden eagle, steppe eagle, imperial eagle, grey faced buzzard, ring necked pheasant, hazel grouse, black grouse, blue rock thrush, common quail, horned owls, gray partridge, desert warbler
Roosting in the sparse trees and shrubs: Yellow browed bunting, common rosefinch, fieldfare, stock dove, common nightjar, little owl, pine bunting
River shores: snow bunting (migratory), red necked crane (migratory), greater painted snipe, osprey, coturnix quail, grey heron, hen harrier, white throated dipper, bank swallow
Other: fork-tailed swift (migratory, mainly aerial), white headed duck, house sparrow, brambling (migratory), song thrush (migratory), black billed caper, northern wren
World building notes:
-Hunting with eagles and other birds of prey is more common than in the other Fëanorian realms (though most utilize birds at least sometimes). Golden and steppe eagles are used primarily by Celegorm and his loyal servants; these are huge and beautiful birds whose use is in some ways a boast of the skill of their handlers
-Celegorm’s knowledge of the language of birds is highly utilized for the defensive and offensive projects of Himlad. Though his followers do not for the most part have this gift they are highly skilled in using tracks, traces and conditions to understand the presence of local birds and the implications thereof. They know what to make of the stray tail feathers of a steppe partridge versus the presence of molt. They know the difference between the tracks of
Of course this applies to other creatures besides birds but as this post is about birds…
-Grouse and quail are sometimes kept for meat and eggs though different species of quail then are kept by the Marchwardens of Doriath. Some of the species are brought from Estolad, Ossiriand or Western Beleriand. The birds are housed in large open pens with small nesting boxes.
-There are also domestic species of chicken, peacock and quail like birds that are kept for similar reasons. Hybrid species, sometimes with native species, occur naturally and through planned breeding projects during the Long Peacd
-The camouflage of steppe creatures including birds is often used in the fashion of Himlad’s soldiers.
-The various sections of archers among the army and scouts are distinguished by varying types of feathers used in their arrows. For example, Swan goose feather is used for the scouts that patrol the borders and rivers, swift feathers are used among the smaller more specialized groups and golden eagle feathers are reserved for the archers who will be first in the lines of offensive movements.
-Game birds are hunted for meat though all parts are used. Bird bones are actually highly utilized by the host of Himlad, in jewelry and headwear as well as whistles and other tools.
As always please feel free to ask more!

The joys of exploring new lands in Himlad
Celebrimbor: (hears a bunch of crashing downstairs) Oh no
Celegorm: YOU! Have you ever heard of a mountain chicken!?
Celebrimbor: Please don’t hurt me…
Celegorm: Have you ever heard of a mountain chicken?
Celebrimbor: …
Celebrimbor: No
Celegorm: What do you think it looks like?
Celebrimbor: …like a really big chick-
Celegorm: That’s what I thought! But No!
Throwing down an entire frog onto the table
Celegorm: It’s this bitch!

I will cheat and combine @emyn-arnens's tag for a Six Sentence Sunday and @grey-gazania's for the Last Sentence Meme :)) thanks, friends!
Aredhel is out on a hunt today:
Tracking a herd of such intelligent animals demands patience and stillness, so the hunters reduce their speech and movement to a minimum. Celegorm’s people, for the most part, do not share his gift for understanding the language of beasts, but they are as skilled as their Lord in reading the marks of their presence. This part of the chase has always been Aredhel’s favorite. Her senses sharpened like the edge of a blade, tracking every little movement, every slight change in her surroundings. It is in these moments of alertness that she notices the living rhythm of the woods in its fulness. The dance of each leaf against the others in the breeze, the shafts of light that cut across tree bark as threads of fine linen, the chorus of buzzing insects in the crowns, and the scurrying of small critters at the feet of the trees.
No pressure tag to share your last sentence (or six) if you'd like, I'm curious what you're up to @imakemywings @actual-bill-potts @swanhild @eilinelsghost @swanmaids @thelordofgifs

I'm gonna post something and it's really something
So well... my self-OC in Silmarillion. His name is Notwë and yesss he's probably a sinda or laiquedo (?) idk. Most important thing about him is he is like- 156 sm tall. And he's a musician enjoying himself, strader's life and MILK 'cause he has a strong allergy symptoms when he drink alcohol. That's why he never drink it :)
Timeline is the First Age and the place he loved most is Himlad (haha). And maybe Doriath idk. But the picture is Notwë in some Himlad's pub singing with his three friends he've just met.

Now I see many details I should have done the other way and now I see many defects but still I love that pic just because it is big and quite the fine

“Red lightning shot into the sky, crackling with what seemed like gleeful laughter. On the other side of the mountains, Celegorm dropped a crystal glass on the floor, not even flinching as it shattered. “Honestly, Tyelkormo. Do try to be more careful.” Curufin pursed his lips as if he hadn’t felt it too, barely concealing a grim smile. Nargothrond was theirs.” — grieving for the living by ifearnocolors

It’s been a long-held headcanon of mine that the House of Feanor takes their bonds of loyalty, fraternity, and familial piety very, /very/ seriously.
Specifically, I mean that I believe that Feanor impressed upon his sons that they were brothers, real brothers (none of that fake, half-brother charade), which is such a miraculous thing (something their father does not have, we should be grateful), and that they have to take care of each other (because no one else will, see how they are turned against us?)
And that, given that Feanor spent much of the last years of the Trees fighting against what he perceived as his younger brother trying to usurp him, and this was such a great and evil sin that the rumor of it tore apart even Maedhros and Fingon’s friendship (for a time)-
Not a single one of the younger brothers would ever even think of undermining an elder

As High King Fingolfin came down from his orgasm, he noticed his lover was frowning.
“I’m sorry, was I too rough?”
“Don’t start that again, you were tender and careful as always.”
“Did you not come? I’m a bit worn out, but I can use my hand.”
“You saw me come quite dramatically over your abs. I’m perfectly comfortable and you were in no way neglectful of my needs.”
“Than what’s wrong?”
“I just said I’m comfortable, there’s no need to worry over me.”
"And yet I do. Obviously something is troubling you, and I would hear it even if I cannot solve it.”
Celebrimbor sighed. “You called me Curufinwe.”
“Ah. I’m sorry, I know you don’t prefer that name.”
“If you’re going to pretend that you’re screwing someone else, at least call him Feanaro so I know who I’m substituting for. I’d rather stand in for someone who is truly impossible to reach rather than someone who merely requires an inconvenient amount of effort. If you want to fuck my father, you need only send a letter to Himlad.”
“I have absolutely no interest in Curufin!”
“So call me by my grandfather’s name or my own, but not his. I’m only asking for clarity, not attraction on my own behalf.”
“Celebrimbor, you have the last already. I am picturing only you when we pleasure each other, in every detail of your own beauty. I will of course use the name you wish, but there is no reason to be bitter about a slip of the tongue.”
“And yet you don’t deny attraction to Feanaro. Even if I am not a replacement, you still desire him.”
“If Feanaro were here and willing, I would still choose you.”
“But it would be a choice, weighing two options that you want but you can only have one.”
“Feanor was bright like a fire, hot and changing but impossible to spend long near. You glitter like a jewel, always having a new angle, reflecting your own beauty and that of all around you, brilliant and clear. You’re right that fire can fascinate, but I cannot hold it and do not wish to.”
“Fine, I accept that you are not wishing for another. I still don’t want to hear my father’s name in the midst of pleasure.”
“I see your point. I am not ashamed to associate with you, but still I wouldn’t like to explain our relationship to Finwe. ”
“My father wouldn’t disown me as long as I give him a reason he can approve of.”
“Oh? And what reason would he possibly accept for you fucking your great-uncle, and your esteemed grandfather’s greatest rival?”
“Blackmail,” Celebrimbor said with a sharp grin. “I seduced you so that I could steer the political fate of the Noldor. If our relationship got out, everyone would lose their trust in you, either for screwing an evil Feanorian kinslayer or you taking advantage of my youth and naivety. So you have to advance my plans or else I’ll ruin you before the whole court. And of course with so much time around you, I will learn of the secret plots you doubtless have against my family.”
The closest Celebrimbor had come to using their relationship for political favors was asking for a room on the same hall and a private smithy. Every other agenda was argued before the whole court, never spoken of in their rooms either before or after it was resolved.
“Would Curufin really ask you to sacrifice yourself so completely to his goals, using your most intimate moments and actions to cynically further an agenda?”
“It’s less than Grandfather required of him and my uncles - it would last a few decades or centuries, rather than until the end of Arda. But he wouldn’t actually approve the plan. It would make me look weak for one, to play the victim of your unwanted lecherous advances, the young innocent gave in before the crown and the personality rather than fight back. Since this is my first time before the court, I must show them I am to be respected and feared.”
“That is a lot to ask from someone in a new situation.”
“Perhaps, but my father has always expected me to be exceptional.”
