Can you talk about what you enjoy about the Lust arc? (since you've brought it up several times and I enjoy reading your thoughts :D)
i think what i like about it the most is that it culminates all the themes of the hueco mundo arc + the overarching story of bleach in general into one fight. and it is masterfully executed.
you would think that invoking so many symbols, images, callbacks, themes etc with one fight would be overwhelming but it's not! it's the one part of the story where it feels like kubo has control of all the elements and you really get to see his skill as a patient storyteller shine. foreshadowing only works if you're willing to sit on stuff for a while, and the lust arc feels like the pay-off for so many build-up moments that have been cooking for a while—ichigo promising to protect orihime, zangetsu's king and horse threat, kaien's monologue about the heart, ichigo's observation that ulquiorra has become more human (while he himself has become more hollow), ulquiorra's speech to orihime ("what is the heart? if i tear open your chest will i find it there?" vs the last hand reaching out scene). it's also an important cornerstone to many future moments—zangetsu confessing that the one they have always wanted to protect was ichigo, ichigo showing orihime his new form in horn of salvation, this being a "despair" moment that ichigo recalls he's overcome when he's going up against yhwach. even if this fight is not the last "event" of the HM arc, it certainly has a finality to it that's very cathartic. we finally get returns for the foreshadowing that's been happening for a while, and this moment in itself is a gigantic stepping stone that leads to horn of salvation, arguably one of the biggest moments for ichigo and orihime.
but where horn of salvation allows ichigo and orihime to succeed, lust forces them to fail. remember, the arc begins with ichigo wanting to gain mastery of his hollow, and orihime wanting to be independent enough to support ichigo in battle. they're both incredibly glum about it, and they're both incredibly earnest about wanting it, which is why it's a painful shock when the events at the tower unfold the way they do. kubo gives them no mercy, just rains failure and despair down on them, makes their worst nightmares come true. they do not achieve anything they set out to achieve at the start of this arc. everyone always likes to point out that orihime "did nothing" this arc or that she fell back to being a damsel in distress for the entirety of it, but again: not only is this is played out like a tragedy, ichigo doesn't meet his goal either. orihime and ichigo are at rock bottom, the worst versions of themselves, the most helpless to circumstances outside their control. they really feel like teenagers here, and when you know how badly orihime has wanted to NOT be a burden, it only hurts worse when she does indeed become one. by the time ichigo cuts off uryu's hand, you've spent enough time with the character to know how sick he'd be when he regains consciousness and sees what he's done. there's a purpose to it that makes me actually like the lust arc for its failure. just because a character is a good person and wants something badly enough does not actually mean they will get it. orihime in particular gets a lot of slack for not accomplishing what she set out to do throughout the HM arc, but there is an intentionality to it that's very different from kubo's usual, good ol' fashioned sexism/misogyny. the despair here feels intentional and not a slight against orihime. he wanted to push these characters to a dark corner and he was not afraid of how ugly it was going to get. i know, given the climate over the last 20+ years of how women get written in fiction, there is an impulse to groan when a woman isn't allowed to take a W but the lust arc is clear that there was no way orihime and her ragtag group of teenage friends were going to come out of this unscathed with an easy victory. power of friendship aside, these are amateurs going up against a man that's kept soul society fooled for years, using a technique he's honed for years, using an army he's built for years. the only one with any amount of career experience is renji, and even his leadership is not enough for this suicide mission.
the only thing they have going for them is the resolve in their hearts. the war was supposed to start months later but they started it early. every one of their foes is stronger than they are. they are vastly outnumbered. and yet they keep going. it was doomed from the start, but something about orihime's optimism and ichigo's bullheadedness and all the victories so far fool you into thinking maybe they can beat the odds this time. but kubo's realism comes through here. none of the victories feel like an asspull, and all of the victories end with a deep sense of exhaustion. they're lucky they came out of this alive, and ichigo is lucky he came back at all. there was never going to be a circumstance where he came out of this unbloodied. his fate was sealed the day zangetsu implied the horse would one day take over. it's ichigo and orihime's utter idealism that destroys them. this is why i struggle to wrap my head around "fix-it" fics where orihime does something different in the HM arc. it just undercuts how woefully underprepared she was at this moment to handle this life and all its raw ugliness (i mean, each to their own, just a personal opinion! orihime's lack of agency plays a big part in her tower breakdown)
meanwhile, you have ulquiorra, who is the perfect antithesis of everything the characters, the series—and maybe even shonen itself stands for. lust comes at a time in pop culture that was a very cinemasins-esque, nitpicky era where audiences were feeling like the power of love // power of friendship trope was a lazy shortcut. it was the birth of the asspull era, where love wasn't enough to justify a return from the dead. even if we've now moved on to a kind of post-ironic/sincere enjoyment of these tropes again, they were already starting to elicit eye rolls back in the early-mid 2000s. ulquiorra feels very emblematic of that culture, a culture that wants nothing more than hardcore realism, even at the expense of our heroes, the ones we want to root for. if our heroes win, there has to be a logical explanation for it. we're not satisfied with a flimsy little thing called love anymore.
the way kubo resolves this is just. so intriguing. i've always pegged kubo to be a bit averse to fully embracing the usual trademarks of shonen (i mean, look at how different ichigo is to the rest of them), but i've also noticed that he's not fully against the idealism of it either. there is a part of him that sometimes enjoys the deep simplicity of emotion and the one-dimension of virtue. in lust, he has an answer that satisfies both the realist and the idealist. zangetsu explains the mechanics for how ichigo comes back, but orihime is the heart trigger. you couldn't have had one without the other. there is a logical explanation, but it's meant to be an underlying framework. the overarching motivation is still all heart. it's...power of love with a little science packed into it. at the end of the day, kubo still loves this genre, even with his usual disinterest in heroes and heroism. there's something for everyone, from the battle-scaling dudebro to the keen-eyed shipper (the two most extreme ends of the spectrum i could think of; obviously these are not the only categories of "fan")
speaking of shipping, i love the lust arc so much for how it feels like an us vs the world arc (quite literally too! even if ichigo and orihime recovered from this, most people had zero faith that ichihime would recover from this, and everyone was convinced that this was the end of the road for them, even if it was just the beginning). it was a special time to be in the fandom for anyone who could see the arc as proof for what it was: that ichihime could survive anything—conflict, tragedy, the majority of bleach fans' disapproval, death itself :D

Prompt: Chemistry
Pairing: Hawkmetri
Friendships: Demetri & Miguel
***
“Why do you always do two sets of notes? I know I need to borrow them sometimes, but I mean…” Miguel watches as Demetri slips one of two identical equation-laden papers into his binder.
“I’ll show you.”
Outside the classroom, Demetri slides the spare notes into a familiar locker. Miguel frowns.
“I thought you two weren’t friends anymore.”
Demetri sighs. “I don’t want him to fail his chemistry finals. He’s too busy committing misdemeanors and breaking arms to pay attention in class.”
“But why help?”
“Because eventually he’ll see sense, amigo. I only hope it’s in time for college applications.”

Common descriptors of foxes may include cunning, clever, and tricky. And all would be true for the impeccably intelligent mister Vin Dictive!
Vin believes himself the epitome of knowledgeable when it comes to his kind. A clever specimen as he is, adorning such advanced abilities not many normal animal-kind bare like speaking aloud, he finds himself a high and mighty monarch ruling over wherever he treads. Of course, following behind his tail is a line of trickery. Vin likes to make others react to his crimes, and they usually will. This fox seems to have grown far too comfortable slipping away from the consequences of his actions.
Being such a selfish and careless creature with a knack for fooling the less fortunate has landed himself a pretty hefty bounty for his head. It’s apparently held up by a certain pair of ruthless twins. And those twin bounty hunters who seem so keen on his defeat… oh, how he despises them so! Wearing his own subjects like intimidation tactics! How fickle, and how rude! Whoever would place such a resilient bounty for his execution!? But he knows he’s always bound not to let himself be bound. After all, he’s no ordinary fox like any other he’s called upon before. He’s a gray fox— one complete with a feature not many other canines have: retractable claws, perfect for things like climbing and scampering away, or even more casual things like scaling trees to collect fruits where the usual, lesser canine could only dream to reach.
And to display such impressive divinity and vanity, Vin wears his cape, headdress, and bracelets of leaves, vines, and grapes with pride. He doesn’t even have to tend to them or replace them! Because… well, they’re not real grapes along him. Just his own craft to give off a kingly approach. But he won’t tell you that. It’s possible that the falsified nature of his inauthentic gear could allude to the devious demeanor of this divine deviant. And recently, he’s heard from the grapevine that there’s a strange newcomer woman in his neck of the woods… a perfectly pathetic candidate for action in his eyes.
But don’t quote him on that… it’s only a little birdie that told him.
———
Several weeks ago, me and my friends had an unexpected “character creation convention” that revolved around the possibility of a potential fox character, who would then take major inspiration from The Fox and the Grapes. Admittedly, I’ve slipped in just a little bit of Evil Queen (from Snow White) inspiration in there as well.
Vin’s name is also interesting as well; taking from the term “Vin”, which means wine, “Dictator”, as he’s a rather headstrong guy who sees himself as a feared leader, and “Vindictive”, which means to have an unreasonable desire for revenge.
Though there’s a bit to unpack about Vin, I should also note that he’s planned more as a side character with his own brief moment of plot. In terms of the whole story, he’s not the most important character, but will certainly have his importance when it’s his time to shine :)
Credit to @aggresively-doesnt-know, @vinesoy, @menthum-mint, @pazam, @shroingushour, @pizzabits, @agent-plaguemask, and @barnowlblu for helping a lot with the original idea and design concepts of Vin! Whew that is a lot of people! I hope I didn’t forget anyone! Sincerely hope y’all don’t mind that!
