Full Metal Jacket (1987). A pragmatic U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has on his fellow recruits from their brutal boot camp training to the bloody street fighting in Hue.

In a lot of ways, this is a lot more conventional than I thought it was going to be, especially coming from a director like Kubrick. He's a master of finding new ways into stories, but for me - - I don't know. There was nothing particularly new here. That's not to say it's bad - it's very good, with great performances and some stunning cinematography, and a clear political position (which felt all the clearer after watching Good Morning, Vietnam), but it still left me a little cold. Still, a very good film, with a few excellent moments. 7.5/10.

this thesis is gonna fucking kill me, this is fucking comparable to sitting through pchem and fluid mechanics back when in my second year of undergrad.

(pchem lectures mostly consisted of me quietly crying in lecture halls and thinking "fuck this shit i'd rather be unemployed and homeless than work with this shit i'd legit rather be unemployed" on repeat for 2 hours at a time. fluid mechanics wasn't difficult in hindsight and both the lecturer and the TAs were fucking amazing but it took me three semesters to finish that course, there was just something about it that prevented my brain from getting any work done /at all/, only in that one course)

my brain is significantly less efficient at getting anything done than it was back then, too. like i know there's a simple solution to this R problem i've been trying to solve for the past 3 days, i've found a couple of stackoverflow pages that look very close to what i'm looking for, but somehow my brain refuses to look at the code and actually /process/ what it's looking at so that i can copy it and change two lines and have my problem solved

status update: 15 days until the final draft of my thesis is due to be submitted to my supervisor.

22 days until my committee is getting it.

How much of my thesis is written you ask? About 1/2 of the methods section, by far the easiest section to write. I haven't even finished analysing my results yet.

And I'm working 3 days this week so can't even really spend the weekend catching up :)))

im finally alone in the house for the next three months and i feel so good. i can do whatever i want. i got my room cleaned for the first time in months. i got a nice aromadiffusor. im gonna buy so many cans to put grains in and organize the grain cupboard for the first time ever. its gonna be so nice. i can finally do my arts and crafts in the living room in pease and quite. not locking the bathroom when im in shower feels so cool for no reason. just would've loved it if my sister cleaned her room before leaving but well whatever. i only have to look there when watering plants so why would i care. not gonna touch it tho id kill a guy if somebody cleaned my room and put all my stuff away so its "neat" and i cant find anything anymore
