a/n | heres one of two of the valentines blurbs i'm gonna post today because i had a sudden urge of inspiration to write (but not for the fics i've already started lmao)
she stormed up the stairs of luke and jack’s apartment complex, tears of frustration welling in her eyes. she felt like an idiot, she should’ve known there was something off with him. that he was spending a little too much time with her. she knocked hurriedly on their door, waiting anxiously for them to answer. after what felt like a century, luke opened the door.
“hey–” he was cut off by her pushing through into the apartment, the tears already starting to fall. “what's wrong?”
“he fucking cheated! that asshole was fucking cheating on me and i didn’t even realize! i feel so fucking stupid.” she cried, wiping angrily at her tears. luke saw red, already grabbing for his keys. “don’t, luke, it isn't worth it. plus, i already broke his nose.” jack, who had paused his game to listen in, whistled.
“damn, girl. remind me not to get on your bad side.” jack commented, dropping the smile when luke glared at him. “sorry.”
“now, i have this stupid family dinner and my parents are expecting me to bring a date! how am i supposed to tell them he cheated on me and on fucking valentines day of all days?” she ranted, the tears still flowing.
“hey, it's all gonna be okay. you just need to breathe.” she took a seat at their island, messily wiping her tears. she took a couple of deep breathes, her anxiety still heightened.
“fuck, i really don’t wanna go tonight.” she groaned, accepting the tissue luke offered her. “and if i cancel, they're gonna ask a shit ton of questions and i can’t deal with that right now.”
“i could go with you.” luke spoke, causing both her and jack to whip their heads towards him. “what?”
“you would do that?” she question, her eyes brightening. “because you don’t have to! i can cancel.”
“no, i want to. i promise.” her face held a beaming smile as she threw her arms around him.
“thank you, lukey! okay, be ready by 7, i'll pick you up! and wear a suit ‘cause we’re going to mario’s.” she seemed genuinely happy as she ran out of the apartment.
“somebody’s in love!” jack sang, laughing when luke smacked his shoulder.
the car was silent, beside the radio that was playing. her fingers tapped against the steering wheel, avoiding looking to her best friend. “what did you tell your parents?” luke asked, looking to her.
“just that i was bringing a guy i wanted them to meet. i left it kind of vague.” luke nodded, looking back out the window. “thanks again, lu. i really appreciate it.”
“of course, anytime.” she smiled, the car falling quiet once more. “you know he’s idiot for cheating on you, right? i mean who would want to cheat on a girl like you.” her cheeks flushed red, a small smile etched on her face. he mumbled something she couldn’t quite pick up, her eyebrows furrowing.
“what was that, lu?”
“i wouldn’t do that.” she almost slammed on the brakes, stunned by his statement. she looked to him, his eyes already trained on her.
“what are you saying?” she asked, the car coming to a stop at a red light. luke rubbed his eyes, clearly nervous. “luke.” she continued to keep her eyes trained on the road, turning into the parking lot of the restaurant.
“look, you’re my best friend, and i know you are still upset. and i understand if you don’t feel the same. but i–” he stopped, breathing in slowly. “i think i’m in love with you. and seeing you upset over some idiot who can’t see that he just lost the best girl he could’ve ever had, pissed me off. and honestly, i’m glad, because you deserve better.” she felt her heart beating out of her chest, the feelings she had spent years pushing down now resurfacing.
“lu…”
“listen, i understand if you don’t feel the same but–” he was cut off when she placed her hand on his cheek, pulling him in for a kiss. it took a moment, but he slowly eased into it, his hand resting on her neck. “i take it, you feel the same?”
“you’re an idiot.” she giggled, placing a short, gentle kiss on his lips. “of course, i feel the same. but we take this slow, okay?”
“deal.” he leaned in to kiss her once more only to be stopped by her placing a finger on his lips.
“we’re gonna be late.” he pouted, earning a laughing, ‘ok, one more, and then we go in. no more, no less.” he pecked her lips before getting out and opening her door for her. “such the gentleman.”
“gotta make up for lost time.”

retail hell au again because why not. so imagine with me that 141 fellas find you after a miserable customer has made you cry.
warnings: reader!character is experiencing the aftermath of a panic attack/distressing emotions when she’s approached by the boys, nothing explicitly stated but she’s feeling a bit vulnerable.
fem!reader and the use of gendered pet names (hen, love) and use of the word cunt as an insult to describe a customer.
also apologies, i’m english and my grasp on scottish slang/scots has mostly been informed by the wonderful show Still Game which is distinctly glaswegian in flavour and various scottish twitter posts.
so you’re hiding out in the smoking area (lmao smoking area, okay let’s be honest it’s where a bucket filled with sand has been dumped near an ex-display bench about idk 20 feet from the customer entrance) because you just need 5 fucking minutes to compose yourself…
gaz is actually coming back from his lunch break and spots you hunched up on the bench in a way that looks truly uncomfortable. he carefully sits next to you and offers a soft smile when you look over at him. “bad customer?” he’s gentle when he asks and doesn’t make a fuss when you make a truly gross sniffling noise and wipe at your eyes. “want a hug?” you shake your head no and hunch in tighter on yourself. “want a milkshake?” you shrug and he passes over a strawberry milkshake. surprisingly he doesn’t say anything and let’s you drink in peace. you like gaz, he’s always friendly and warm when you interact briefly on the shop floor. he always seems to know what to say or do to get the best out of you and everyone else around him. eventually you check your phone and see it’s been 10 minutes since you left the customer service desk with tears in your eyes and lump burning your throat. embarrassment and residual anxiety washes through you when you recall how you’d all but fled to the safety of the smoker’s bench despite not smoking yourself. gaz catches your shudder when you check the time and knocks his shoulder into yours gently. “don’t worry, i’ll let price know you need a few more minutes, alright?” gaz gets up and heads inside the building, you know he’ll speak to price so you unfurl a little bit and chew on the straw of your milkshake.
soap and simon find you next. soap’s chattering away about the most recent delivery as they both approach your bench. simon stops dead a respectable three feet away but soap throws himself onto the bench bumping his knee into yours “what’s the matter wi’ you then, hen? you’ve a face like a smacked arse”. you shift away from soap, usually you don’t mind his directness but it’s just rubbing you the wrong way right now. you’re still feeling raw and a bit sick from finishing gaz’s milkshake and lingering anxiety. “fucks sake johnny, leave ‘er alone.” simon grumbles and fishes a packet of cigarettes out of his pocket. “how? am just askin’ what’s the matter!” soap’s hands swat the air near your face and you shuffle further along the bench to avoid being hit in the nose in his agitation. “johnny.” simon snaps and soap huffs and folds his arms across his chest. it’s quiet amongst the three of you while simon taps out a cigarette and pats down his pockets looking for a lighter. soap shoots a wink at you and starts playing with a lighter that apparently has just appeared from thin air. “give me my lighter back johnny.” “gies a cigarette an’ i’ll trade it.” “no.” “c’mon simon! wan little cigarette.” “fuck off.” “awright then you miserable bastard.” you shake your head at their bickering and hold out your hand. soap pouts but drops it into your open palm. you lob the lighter in a poor underhand throw to simon who plucks it out of the air easily and nods in appreciation. “aw c’mon hen, that’s no’ playin’ fair!” soap whines and knocks his knee into yours “i thought i was your favourite.” “favourite pain in the arse.” is simon’s dry response around the lit cigarette and you crack a wobbly smile. “there she is! didn’t i tell you si?” soap’s grin is blinding “i knew we could cheer her up!” your wobbly smile starts to resemble more of its usual cheer when you catch simon’s eye roll directed at soap. you open your mouth maybe to defend soap or maybe to provoke him, you haven’t quite decided, when a pointed throat clearing catches your trio’s attention. your smile drops off your face and the anxiety that had started to quiet down in the face of johnny’s cheerfulness rises again in your belly because price is aiming a stern look towards the three of you from only six feet away.
price gently sits next to you on the bench when you’re certain simon and johnny are back inside. johnny squawking about the injustice of having his break cut short and simon calling him an idiot in response as they both disappear through the doors. you open your mouth to apologise for skiving off and offer any reason or explanation that will help your case but your teeth click shut when price holds out a palm to forestall your inevitable word vomit. “i don’t want to hear it, love.” price’s tone isn’t unkind, he’s just shooting straight with you, it’s something you quite admire about him really. “that customer was a cunt quite frankly and i’m proud of you for handling her the way you did.” the praise creates a small glow in your chest and burns away the last of your dread. “but, a word of advice, as the duty manager for today?” price offers a small encouraging smile so you nod. “you’re not paid enough to put up with that shit, so don’t.” you grimace and blow out a breath, you want to argue, maybe even defend yourself and explain that it’s fine really that’s just how retail is. price chuckles “no love, listen. you aren’t paid enough, but i am. so next time it happens, send ‘em my way alright?” price offers another smile when you nod in agreement before pushing himself off the bench. “now, c’mon. i’ve got stock that needs counting down the plumbing aisle and you can give me a hand. no more talking to muppets on the customer service desk today.” you follow price back into the store feeling much better than you did twenty five minutes ago.
the rest of your shift passes by easily enough and you make a mental note to buy gaz a milkshake as a thank you when he shoots you a friendly smile as you pass him on your way out the store on your lunch.

Sorry if it's boring, but continuing with LawRusso AU Johnny princess, I really like the "enchanted" movie and I can't stop thinking about Johnny being Giselle singing to the rats and cockroaches to clean Daniel and Sam's house lol
as a rule of thumb it is NEVER boring to send me asks, especially ones like these where i can have fun and think of AUs! and you picked a movie i love so this is just a win win for me!!
let’s get into it:
lawrusso enchanted AU is such a good idea im almost jealous i didn’t think of it myself!!
i think daniel and amanda got divorced amicably a few years ago and she still lives in los angeles but daniel moved back to jersey to be closer to lucille and he took sam with him (im imagining this as a story without anthony because it fits better, sorry anthony).
daniel still works as a divorce lawyer because that is just funny to me and it’s canon to the movie and he has this perpetual look of "im one shirt sleeve caught on a door handle away from snapping" look because being a single father is hard work and yeah, he and amanda co-parent but sam is with him most of the time and by moving here he’s always made himself more prone to special lucille larusso mother attacks of "you never visit even now that you’re so close" "you’re so skinny, do you cook actual food or just eat take out?" "are you coming for christmas? all your cousins will be there and also that nice girl you liked when you were a kid, judy? maybe it’s time to get back into dating, daniel!"
amanda has planned to come into the city to spend the holidays with her daughter and ex-husband and i see her as a platonic nancy role.
sam is in her full princess era and she’s making both her parents crazy with all the singing and dancing (and kicking furniture because she’s a karate princess)
meanwhile, in andalasia, johnny who is both prince(ss) and hero dreams of finding his one true love and sighs at his window. he’s been locked away in a tower by his evil step-dad kreese and he’s waiting for someone to come and save him (or at least just open the door of his magically locked tower because he can surely save himself).
carmen who happens to be a princess and hero herself has gone on a quest to save the lost prince of andalasia and with her help, johnny manages to escape the tower, defeat a forest troll and take back his throne from kreese’s claws. he and carmen tentatively get together (but deep down both feel this might not be the right fit for each other) and as johnny makes his way to his own royal wedding he’s sent to Real Life New Jersey and meets daniel and sam.
i kind of see giselle’s wedding dress for him but with pants for a more Realistic outfit but… screw realism i want johnny lawrence in that EXACT outfit!
also imagine scott mccall the equalizer soft mullet with a tiara, it’s just too good. ALSO imagine carmen IN THIS!!!!
you KNOW she would rock this!!
oh and yeeees, johnny summoning rats and insects in daniel’s apartment to clean and sam is SOOOOO excited because that’s a real life prince(ss) who also happens to be a great fighter and they do karate moves while also talking about johnny’s best friend, a chipmunk called bobby.
sam and johnny going on a shopping spree and buying a bunch of stuff and eating ice cream. johnny going to the hairdresser and having his hair cut to look more traditionally masculine (daniel doesn’t want to look into why it makes him sad) because he he keeps getting looks from people in the street for his dress and long hair.
johnny making clothes out of daniel’s curtains and daniel is all you could just ASK me for MY clothes you are not THAT much bigger than i am. johnny making a gi for sam out of pastel pink flower fabric from an old blanket and daniel is like okay… i have to admit that’s pretty adorable.
johnny in the park singing to daniel, who has been wondering if he should take his mom’s advice and try to get back with amanda, hoooow dooooes she knooooow you loooove heeeer (johnny stop, people are looking at us) and johnny has that giselle/animated princess innocence but there is still very much an edge of assholery to him where every time he can he embarrasses daniel as much as possible.
(carmen running around new jersey trying to find her prince(ss) and being like i kind of hate this i wish this was more sunny, also why do i keep getting questions about being on broadway what is a broad a way)
daniel and johnny fighting because johnny keeps saying carmen will come get him and daniel is so fed up with it ("no, johnny, it’s just not gonna happen." "no? is that the only word you know, larusso? no?! oh my god you make me so, so so!!!" "so what?" "so angry!" cue sparring in the living room because that’s how they deal with emotions )
johnny and daniel falling in love montage and then CARMEN AND AMANDA FALLING IN LOVE MONTAGE!!! YES I WILL SNEAK CARMANDA IN EVERYTHING EVER!!
kreese coming to new jersey to finish the job, daniel and johnny going to the ball and daniel giving johnny a true love’s kiss, kreese turning into a dragon and kidnapping daniel, johnny chasing them on the roof with carmen’s sword in his hand and finally getting rid of his evil step-father to save his one true love!!
"is this an habit of yours, daniel? falling off of stuff?"
"only when you’re there to catch me."
lawrusso new jersey happy ending and carmanda los angeles happy ending because amanda wouldn’t go to andalasia when sam is there and hey! carmen would love a break from being a fairytale hero! she wants to go to the beach!
daniel quits his job because it makes him miserable and he and johnny open a dojo together which sam is very excited about and lucille is so happy that her son has found someone and seems to be happier than ever.
they all go to andalasia once in a while to visit bobby and the other three chipmunks (you know who they are) and they all live happily ever after.

New York Comic Con 2023 and the Energon Universe panel is in the books
And while the room wasn't COMPLETELY full, there was a big crowd for said Energon Universe panel. Daniel Warren Johnson, Robert Kirkman, Joshua Williamson, and others came to the panel to announce that their plan involved making all these disparate parts work together as a series, including Void Rivals, which Kirkman specifically said was aiming to feel like it could have been a sister line with the Joes and Transformers (and considering Hasbro owns the property, probably means if it is successful they'll get toys of their own).
Some highlights and spoilers -
Daniel Warren Johnson knows people are upset at Bumblebee dying and frankly, does not care. "I feed on your tears", was his quote, which got a big laugh. Specifically, he didn't want to draw Bumblebee, hence his death in Issue 1, a death that he and Kirkman have confirmed will stick and Hasbro was totally cool with. With Bee dead, the panel concluded that there's more freedom to work with other characters and a lot more tension about who will live and who will die, since plot armor due to Hasbro demands is not a thing in the Energon Universe.
There was a big focus on GI Joe and how it will connect with the Transformers since the idea is that the Transformers' appearance causes the world to shift in a major way. The Duke miniseries will focus on how a traumatized Duke deals with the fallout of his fight with Starscream in the upcoming Transformers #2, and how Joe is founded specifically to combat them. Rebranding the Joes as an anti-alien strike force/international crisis team also seems to be a way to deal with getting away from the "jingoistic army toys" stigma that hasn't played as well since the Reagan years (even if most Joe fiction like Larry Hama's comics condemn blind jingoism). Interestingly, the initial lineup includes the Baroness, who's traditionally a high-ranking Cobra member and romantically entangled with Destro.
3. Cobra meanwhile is shown to be what is specifically described as a horror comic about Cobra Commander using the discovery of the Cybertronians to fuel his plans for world domination, and how Cobra Commander brings together a lot of disparate elements that otherwise would never have worked together to join his quest for world domination. More fuel is thrown on the "Cobra Commander's Luger is actually Megatron" fire, but of course, nothing is confirmed.
Another surprise for the initial lineup is the big guy in the back is Mercer, a character introduced in the GI Joe movie as an ex-Cobra officer who had "seen the light". Whether he does this time is another matter.
4. Back to the Transformers. The running idea (besides a minor but notable undercurrent of "Screw IDW") was that this is using the cartoons as gospel rather than the comics, but it will eventually expand beyond that initial concept using other characters. Specifically, during a quick Q&A at the end, someone asked about the Japanese characters, and Kirkman said while he had no immediate plans for them, he was actually a big fan of Star Saber, while Johnson mentioned liking the Japanese openings. A far cry from IDW making them all villains and losers.
5. Johnson is a big fan of wrestling. Kirkman, not so much. This led to some funny banter on stage about Johnson's tendency to fill fight scenes from the initial script (which will often just say "Character A and Character B fight") with wrestling moves like Optimus Prime introducing himself to Starscream with a Rainmaker Lariat before giving him a German Suplex. Despite Kirkman not being a fan, everyone on stage and the crowd seemed to agree that it gave the fight scenes a dynamic look that is new to the Transformers.
6. Void Rivals has not been forgotten in all this. While after Issue #6 it will be taking a five-month break, the series will continue to serve as the backbone of what's going out outside of Earth.
Including the teased appearance of the Quintesson Judge. Kirkman also promised more backstory, like possibly getting to see the Skuxxoid's family and other species that are part of the cartoon lore as part of his efforts to build out the universe while still making Void Rivals its own thing that is engaging without the other series.
7 The main goal of everyone is that while all the various series are part of a big story that is the Energon Universe, the reader can read just one and get a full experience. That being said, it's clear that the ultimate goal is for them all to work together.
And those are the highlights of the panel. Fun times are ahead if you're a Transformers fan, and after years of mismanagement and neglect, it sounds like the GI Joe-related stuff will be very interesting to see. Still, the focus right now is the comics, so my pie-in-the-sky theory about this being a dry run for a big animated show in the vein of Invincible will have to wait for another year.

STEPHANIE BROWN (DC COMICS) (CW: Pregnancy)
1.) Steph was created by noted conservative Chuck Dixon, so, off to a good start. She’s was a superhero called the Spoiler and was Tim Drake’s (the third Robin, yes there’s multiple Robins) love interest. From the start, she’s consistently framed as a wannabe vigilante who doesn’t know what she’s doing, who needs to be protected against herself. Pretty much everyone in her vicinity but ESPECIALLY the men thinks she’s incompetent, and completely dismissing her vigilantism, constantly telling her to stop, condescending to her non-stop, and we’re clearly supposed to agree with them. Her relationship with Tim was fraught with misogynistic tropes, from her relentlessly pursuing him like it’s her job to him being one of her #1 condescenders. She gets a teen pregnancy arc by, again, noted conservative Chuck Dixon, where she’s used as a mouthpiece for his pro-life stance. Eventually, she gets made Robin for like six weeks as a consolation prize. A consolation prize for what? Being violently killed off in a crossover event, where Steph, after being fired from Robin in an attempt to prove herself, kickstarts one of Batman’s plans without understanding the consequences, resulting in an all-out, violent gang war where Steph gets tortured to near-death, and then left to die on purpose by her doctor (a character massacre in its own right btw). She does eventually get retconned as surviving the event and hiding out in Africa (don’t ask, it does not make more sense in context), and eventually, things start looking up for her when she’s made Batgirl, after the previous Batgirl (yes, there’s more than one Batgirl) got forced out of the mantle for entirely DIFFERENT misogynistic nonsense reasons. Her Batgirl run has its issues but is mostly pretty good and deals with the lack of support she received from everyone around her. THEN the universe got rebooted entirely (just roll with it) and bc there were a lot of ppl up high (specifically a guy called Dan Didio, who we all hate) who REALLY hated the idea of Batgirls that weren’t Barbara Gordon, Steph not only got forced out of the mantle in favor of a Barbara Gordon (who got magically cured of her full below-the-waist paralysis in one of the worst acts of ableism DC has ever seen and that’s saying a LOT), but for years, there was a complete, editorial-enforced ban on even mentioning her or the other previous Batgirl, Cassandra Cain. This eventually got lifted and she was brought back with a completely mangled backstory. Dan Didio has since left the company and she’s in a better place now, but her character never recovered from All That imo. DC has SO MUCH sexism it’s laughable, and even writing this down I needed to skip or skim over huge examples of misogyny like Barbara’s treatment in The Killing Joke and Cass’s villain arc, but Steph is one of those characters who’s just barely gotten any kind of break ever since she was created. At least Barbara got a cool hero identity which specifically challenged and deconstructed her fridging in The Killing Joke (until she was forced into Batgirl again but that wasn’t misogyny towards her it was ableism) and Cass had a long-running, extremely popular Batgirl solo prior to being character massacred. Poor Steph just gets consolation prize after consolation prize bc nobody can be normal about her for some reason.
2.) what if you were introduced to be Robin’s love interest had the most batshit teen pregnancy storyline rooted in the writers views of women and theeeeen after all that when ur boyfriend quit being robin batman took you in as the next batman only to try and make your now-ex jealous to get him to come be robin again and you never got a real shot at it? what if then he fired you, the first time a robin has ACTUALLY gotten legitimately fired without getting to come back and then died after being tortured for his secret identity? and what if this all happened due to the editors mandating you should die at the end of their massive event and the main batman writer at the time thinking you should get to have “a bit of happiness before he crushed you like a bug” (paraphrasing here but. “crushed like a bug” is a pull). what if the whole reason you were fired is because they didnt want to saddle bruce with more guilt in having another dead robin despite the hand he had in your death. and then what if the year after you died jason todd came back from the dead. but this only brings more attention to the fact that he got a memorial as robin and you didnt in canon writing and also from the editors and writers themselves. and then what if years later it was retconned that you faked your death to recover from your GRIEVOUS INJURIES so then writers wrote basically everyone being “betrayed” by you “faking” your death. and it cheapens everything about your death which was already a fucking misogyny hat trick. and all the emotional depth of your death is gone and you come back and only get to be batgirl because once again editorial is having problems and cant decide which of the previous batgirls should come back for the new run so you get thrown in as the noncontroversial pick. and what if after this run ends youre doomed to be written as quirky teen girl supporting cast member for like years up to literally present day in canon AND fanon and are almost always reduced to a girlfriend, a supportive friend for your exs endeavors in dating men, or the super put together girl to “get [x man]’s head out of his ass” for various men you have to play second string too. and what if you finally get a series with other women and even then are a Quirky Teenage Girl before anything else despite literally going to college over ten real life years ago and its taboo for literally anyone to talk about your death-not-death or your teen pregnancy or any of your various problems outside superheroics, which include but are not limited to: your mother being a recovering addict and you two trying to mend your family, your criminal father, your issues regarding your relationship to family as an ideal, and mothers and fathers, in differing ways because of these things, the fact that you are an underdog amongst underdogs in the batfamily to the point where your relationships with all of them should be much more fraught than in canon, considering the shit theyve said to you, and dont get to have any real relationships to the superhero community outside of them, the fact that youre one of the few in the batfam to never be on a team. And of course, the fact that not only do the people in canon hate you but also a decent part of the writers, editors, and fans do too. and if they dont hate you you still are almost always portrayed as a caricature of yourself. even if you just look at how steph was treated next to jason irt their deaths, steph should EASILY advance in this damn competition.
3.) Literally tortured to death in a sexualized manner for shock value:
“There was some controversy in the fan community about both the character’s death by torture and the fact that even though she served as Robin for a time, she received no monument or memorial in the Batcave during the years of her apparent death unlike the second Robin Jason Todd.[5]
Regarding the former issue, at the 2011 Auckland Writers and Readers Festival, the former Batgirl writer Dylan Horrocks said that the writers were told from the start that Spoiler would die in this crossover and she was made Robin "purely as a trick to play on the readers, that we would fool them into thinking that the big event [War Games] was that Stephanie Brown would become Robin”. The decision was unpopular with both him and Nightwing writer Devin Grayson, and he felt “pleased and vindicated” over the eventual controversy.[6]

During a Q&A at a convention in March 2007, DC executive editor Dan DiDio responded to questions about the absence of a Stephanie tribute from the Batcave, saying that the official position of DC Comics is that “She was never really a Robin”, despite on-panel claims to the contrary.[7] When Alfred Pennyworth asks if Batman’s acceptance of Stephanie as Robin was conceived by him as only a temporary measure from the outset and constituted part of an effort to lure Tim back to the cape, Batman evades the question. However, when a dying Stephanie asks, “Was I ever really Robin?”, Batman answers, “Of course you were.”[8] However, her memorial has been present in different publications since the controversy arose.[9]“
AKI IZAYOI/AKIZA IZINSKI (YU-GI-OH! 5D'S)
1.) Famously built up as part of a protagonist group during the first and second season, complete with her own tragic backstory and several duels she got to participate in (very important in yugioh), only for a change in the lead writer (who, in some of his other works, literally admitted “he’s not good at writing women”) to occur after the second season, turning her from almost a main character into a literal “benchwarmer” for her duelling team (one of the outtro sequences in the later seasons literally refers to her as that). Fun things included such as: Had special powers in the earlier seasons which she struggled with and learned to control only to lose them for no reason in season 4; went from duelling several times to duelling literally twice during the entire 3rd, 4th, and 5th season, one of which was a tournament duel she lost embarrassingly despite being set up as a very capable duellist before; painstakingly learned a special form of duelling (card games on motorcycles) only to lose the only duel she partook in in this format; was briefly put into a coma (and lost her powers directly after) shortly before two of the male protags GAINED power upgrades; went from an acceptable amount of screentime to a background prop; also, despite being canonically sixteen, standard overly sexy outfit design with lots of cleavage (big tits because of course), a very short dress, and stockings with garters.
2.) She develops psychic powers when she is 8, accidentally injures her father since she can’t control them yet. He calls her a monster, abuses and neglects her, and eventually sends her to a dueling boarding school rather than actually care for her. Other fear her and her powers so she suppresses them and never really learns how to control them. Eventually a cult called the Arcadia Movement recruits her because they want to exploit her powers for their own gain. In the first season she is introduced as a strong duelist with psychic powers, a rival on par with the male protagonist. She also nearly beats the protagonist in duel when they go head to head. She only starts to lose because she starts to open up emotionally about her past and fear of hurting others with her powers.
After this she joins the protags and is a love interest for the main character. They NEVER bring up and develop her backstory and stuff after this EVEN THOUGH this is such a good and interesting backstory. Even though she is introduced as a competent duelist, they reduce her to a benchwarmer on the team. THEY LITERALLY SAY SHE IS A BENCHWARMER IN THE SHOW!! She doesn’t get to contribute to the plot, partake in important duels, or develop her character arc after the first season despite the fact she had so much potential.
Her character could EASILY have been used to explore trauma and exploitation, major themes already present in the show. But sadly they chose to only explore how those things impacted the male characters instead
3.) My poor girl. Her story starts off great, good set up, good characterization. She has psychic powers and her parents did not know how to help her. She ran away from home and joined a cult of people with similar powers. All normal character beats. The main character shows her the power of friendship and shows she has a connection to 4 other ‘signers’ who are suppose to protect against the season antagonist. She starts leaving the cult, talking to her parents again etc because she now knows there are prople who care for her. But thats where her development kind of ends. She learns the leader of the cult was manipulating her but she never really gets to confront him.
By the end of the season, she and the other female signer get sidelined because they doesn’t have the core mechanic of the series, how to play a card game on a motorcycle. Instead they are replaced by a character who was not originally a signer but by the end became one cause he helped.
Season 2 and beyond is shows not much more than that. Except for she has a whole episode dedicated to learning how to ride a motorcycle. The biggest thing about that is we never really see anyone else in the series learn or be uncomfortable riding and while it’s realistic, it’s only her. And in that episode there was like a couple of guys trying to make her fail like? I guess it’s part of the episode of learning and overcoming challenges but why intentionally introduce the misogyny now? I think there was maybe 2 other woman who rode motorcycles in this show which is an overall series problem.
She went from a main character to background as the rest of the story focuses around the main character and his 2 childhood friends for the rest of the series.
Ultimately her story is wasted potential, she started out with interesting character and development but there was no strong follow up. We never see her work through how the cult used her or how it affects her after a first confrontation. She was just left hanging like every other woman in yu-gi-oh. And don’t get me started on the manga. Iirc she gets introduced at the end for plot reasons and nothing else.

With his glass like skin and reputation; Jungkook was clean cut. He looked like the boy every mother and father prayed to God their daughter would one day bring home. He grew up as sweet as berries in the summertime, as warm as Christmas morning, and as kind as spring time weather.
Imagine everyone’s surprise when one day Jungkook had changed everything about himself. No one really knew how to ask him what happened.. What had changed? Why did he change? Everyone was left clueless as to why Jungkook came to be the tatted e-boy he is today.
Here’s the really odd part.. Everyone is overcomplicating the question. To the ones who had asked him why he changed his look and lifestyle and to the ones who simply wait for the accusations to be confirmed; the answer will always remain a mystery. Everyone is giving him too much room to expand his answer. Everyone is giving him too many ways to answer.. Sarcastically, ironically, jokingly..
The truth is, everyone is seriously just asking the wrong question. Think about it.. Rephrase it.
It’s who.
Who changed him?
Then, it’s simple.
You.
When you met him, he had bare skin.
The Jungkook everyone knew innocently lived his life to the fullest. Immaturely throwing sex jokes here and there when he was with his friends and shamelessly flirting with whatever girl he graced his presence with—it was merely for show.
The Jungkook you knew opted to hold hands instead of placing his hand on your thighs. The Jungkook you knew had a tendency to fall asleep nested on your chest, freshly showered from his work out because you felt like his after work out reward. You were his prize.
The only catch was that you two weren’t officially together. You had been dating exclusively for almost 10 months and your routine with him had been the same for so long.
Flirt, question if you two were falling in love, deny.
Then, run it again.

Until one night.. That night, he came over and stayed a little longer. That night, he kissed you a little deeper and it almost felt like he was trying to tell you something.. Like he was trying to prove something to you. That night, you laid on your bed with him in between your legs.
“Min Yoon Gi?” he murmurs as he reads the name tattooed on your thigh. At first, when he bunched your skirt up, he noticed your pale green cotton underwear.
Cute.
But it didn’t take long for his eyes to wander to the ink on your skin. How come he had never noticed it before? It’s not too big, but it’s definitely not a minor tattoo.

You prop yourself up with your elbows and let out a small laugh. “Oh, god.. That’s embarrassing. Ignore it.” Swiftly, you cup his face and place a kiss on his lips.
Odd.
He doesn’t kiss back. When you pull away, it’s difficult to read him. He looks.. Upset? Disappointed? Angry? Confused.
“Who’s Min Yoon Gi?” Jungkook fails to ask nonchalantly. He sounds curious and determined to know. Unsure of what answer to expect, he tries to brace himself.
“Ex boyfriend.”
You don’t explain any further. Instead, you wrap your arms around his neck and pull him down onto your body. His body, on top of yours and your hands getting tangled in his freshly permed hair; you feel the closeness. It’s nice to have him like this.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t last long. Jungkook’s mind has already left the moment you two were sharing.
He hasn’t even heard of a Min Yoon Gi prior to this moment from you. How important could this guy be to you if you never talked about him? You and Jungkook have been.. Something for almost almost 10 months.
That’s almost a year. He was going to ask you to be his girlfriend in 2 months. He had it all planned out too.
It’s been 10 months of him coming over to tutor you in any math related class. 10 months of you stuffing your freshly baked pastries into his mouth, 10 months of hand holding, 10 months of waiting outside each other’s lecture halls.. 10 months of falling for each other.. And now what? Now it feels like it’s being thrown out the window right.
He can’t even say it’s like you’ve slipped through his fingers.. It feels like you just pulled the rug from under him.
It’s then when it clicks to him.
All this time.. Every kiss shared with you, every story shared, every message sent.. And he didn’t know you. He thought he was falling in love but.. This feels like a disenchantment. Could he love you the way you love?
It messes with him. How did you do that? How could you have loved someone so much that you’d get their name tattooed onto your body? He can’t figure out if you were reckless or just in love.. He can’t figure out if he’d do the same.
“Why’d you get his name tattooed?”
“I loved him.”
Loved.
Past tense? Does that mean with time, when and if you fall in love with Jungkook the way he’s falling for you, you’d tattoo his name to your skin too?
He’s so bothered and it’s partly because you caught him off guard. Partly because.. You had 10 months to mention this. It wouldn’t have mattered if he found this out earlier on.. It matters now though. He had been bragging about you to everyone and you were walking around with another man’s name tattooed to your thigh.
He can’t believe you have a past romantic interest inked onto your body forever.
Forever.
Jungkook feels every emotion only to conclude that he feels utterly conflicted. He thought he wanted that with you.. But being with you forever meant being with this man’s name on your body forever too.
Perhaps he’s a coward. Perhaps he’s selfish. Perhaps he doesn’t know how to process all of this and just needs an excuse—an out from this.
An out from you.
This is the part where you could call him that.. Because honestly? He is. Jungkook is so afraid. This is his first time.. Needing to face that if he wants you this bad; he has to accept everything you come with. Baggage was one thing, a tattoo on your thigh with someone else's name is another.
“Did it hurt?”
“At first, I guess. Then it was worth it.”
He wonders if you know he wasn’t talking about the tattoo.
“You’re not gonna get it removed?” Jungkook glances at it again and then back at you. you respond with a shrug.
“I think it’s funny.”
Except Jungkook did not find it amusing. No part of his mind or heart felt compelled to even let out a slight chuckle or giggle for the sake of avoiding any awkwardness. No, he kind of wanted you to feel.. Stupid.
It’s a no brainer.
Of course you loved others before him. You’re gorgeous—practically an angel. It’s no secret you were loved. He knew that because it took him so long to get your attention but at this moment; he’s questioning how to make love to someone who was once so sure about someone else.
So sure that they would get that person’s name tattooed?
How could you love someone enough to do such a thing? How could you change your mind and simply think it’s funny?
It irritates him. Though tattoos have always been art to him, the minimalistic style of another man’s name tattooed to your thigh looked absolutely vile to him.
Hell, you had some man’s name tattooed at the top of your thigh, dangerously close to where he was about to bury himself and you didn’t even bother to warn him?
You can sense Jungkook tensing up. The mood was fading away.
“I loved him,” you breathe. “A lot actually but it’s over. I like you, Jungkook. Just ignore it.”
It made you feel a little weird. Why did it matter so much? This is your body, your past, your experience.. Nevertheless, you attempt to reassure him by pressing your lips to the corner of his lips before placing small kisses down his jaw. Maybe it’s just jealousy.
Jungkook stays still, uncertain on how to move and completely getting lost in his thoughts. He can’t comprehend this.
“What do you want, Jungkook? Do you want me to be apologetic about what I chose to ink onto my body?”
You sound harsh. He sits up and sighs.
He wanted you.
He was so sure of it.. Until now.
Fuck, this is all happening so fast. Your hands tug the hem of his shirt, suggesting to take it off or suggesting for him to stay. He doesn’t know. He’s blanking out.
His little heart was being crushed.
Jungkook was falling in love for the first time in what feels like a lifetime and it’s with you; the vague picture of love with a name tattooed of another man you once loved.
“Jungkook? what’s wrong?” you ask, trying to avoid sounding concerned. You don’t want him to think you’re clingy. Not now, not when you’re about to be walked away from.
You know it.
He doesn’t have an answer. He mumbles a weak and repetitive apology. Jungkook tells you he’ll call soon—text you even. With no time for you to reply, he hurries to put on the article of clothes he previously took off. He leaves your dorm.
Four days later, his friends are snapchatting Jungkook getting his first tattoo.
Then, it’s almost consistent. He gets tattoos often, his friends post about it more than he does. You watch from afar, the once bare skinned man you tainted, paint his body with art.. But no names.
Aside from social media, you see him.. Never.
Maybe in another, it would’ve worked out between the two of you. Maybe in another life, you two would be studying together in a library, falling in love and staying in love. In another life, it was going to work out for you two.
In this life however, he’s no longer waits outside your lecture halls or shows up at midnight to review your freshly baked pastries. You aren’t too sure what happened but you know you’re too prideful to reach out.
Besides, he was only 10 months of your life.
Looking back, maybe you bumped into him once at a party. The t-shirt he wore revealed the familiar inked arms you watched progress into a sleeve over social media, but his face seemed to be unfazed with the sight of you. He didn’t look at you the same. You didn’t look at him the same.
Sometimes, if you two were tipsy enough, your eyes would meet. Immediately, you two would turn away and act like you didn’t know each other.
Like he never almost loved you.
Like he was never almost yours.
Like how you were almost his.
Little did you know that his unfazed expression was merely a moment of awestruck realization. Yes, you were only 10 months.. But you were almost his first love. In a way, you were permanent in him.
Something like a tattoo, you stayed with him forever.

Seeing In Color
Summary: Jungkook decides karate is better than boxing and takes you to Dragon’s Gate, where you meet the Boy With the Dragon Tattoo.

Author’s Note: This has turned into more of a slow burn than I intended... I just cannot help myself with these side characters. They stir up ideas.

Yoongi looks at both of you quizzically but gives you a gummy smile. He's not wearing his gi, just a plain white t-shirt and grey sweatpants, and you assume he must be done with his classes for today. You try not to let him notice you're staring but his shirt is just too tight and his sweatpants are just too low on his hips for you not to. A few lingering seconds on his chest let you know that the red on his chest is just ever so noticeable through the white fabric of his shirt.
Jungkook doesn't answer and looks everywhere but Yoongi's face, not sure what to say. Yoongi stuffs his hands in his sweats pockets, taking a deep breath and backing up a step.
"Did I interrupt something? I'll just go get my coffee and be on my way then."
He starts to walk away but you blurt out for him to wait and grab the leg of his pants before he can get too far. He turns to look down at you and you let go, feeling your face heat up in embarrassment. He didn't seem annoyed, or angry, but you wondered if knowing what happened between Jungkook and Hoseok would change anything. You've been told over and over that it was just a fling, it was a long time ago, but you can't help but feel the bile churn in your stomach whenever you think about it. You've never been friends with an ex before and that concept seems entirely foreign to you.
"Come down and sit with us after you get your coffee." Jungkook offers, saving you from having to think of words to stumble over. Yoongi smiles in affirmation and tells you he'll be right back. Your best friend just stares at you with a tired look on his face and shakes his head at himself.
"I should have known he might show up to the coffee shop thats right next to his dojo. I'm a fucking idiot." You notice Jungkook squint over your shoulder and then his eyes widen, a look of terror crossing his face and he sucks in a breath of air in a loud gasp.
"Oh, no." He whispers. "Oh no. Oh Goddddddd."
You spin around in your chair and look over to the counter. Yoongi stands off to the side, waiting at the end of the counter for his drink to be made. He's talking to another man who also seems to be waiting for his drink. He's a couple of inches taller, dark brown wavy hair falling around his eyes. He looks trendy in a floral print button down that shows a little too much collarbone, but it doesn't dawn on you the reason for Jungkook's reaction until you see him stick out his plump, pouty bottom lip at Yoongi.
"Oh my God." You whisper, whipping back around to face your friend. "Is that the hot artsy guy?! From Sculpture & Painting?!"
"Shhhhh!!" Jungkook takes his hood off of his head and swipes his hair back, internally panicking. You peek back over your shoulder and they both now have their drinks in hand, and you see the tall one point at Jungkook before they both start walking over.
"I look like shit. And Yoongi's going to bring up Hoseok." Your best friend whispers, almost inaudible. "This is a nightmare." He emphasizes the last word, eyes going wide. You notice Jungkook's struggle not to sink down into his chair to try and become invisible as they approach the table.
"Taehyung." He says immediately, offering you his hand to shake. You take it. "Nice to meet you." The smile that he gives you is dazzling. This close, you notice that he has a gold choker on, and big pearl earrings. You can feel a few rings on the long, slender fingers of his hand that you're holding. Very stylish, but different than Hoseok, you think. Expensive taste.
"Y/n. Nice to meet you too, Taehyung." You think about adding 'Jungkook has told me a lot of good things about you' to the end of your sentence, but you don't want to add to your best friend's embarrassment. You flick your eyes over to Yoongi, and he's smiling fondly at you. Warmth pools in your chest. Then you realize they're both standing, shifting weight on their feet, and you look around for extra chairs. Taehyung is ahead of you, walking around to your other side and pulling a chair in between you and Jungkook. You look up at Yoongi and he just smiles down at you, moving next to your seat to rest his hand on the back of it. You feel his thumb touch start stroking your upper back, but after a second he pulls his hand away, thinking better of it. Your stomach churns and you can't decide what you're feeling right now.
"Taehyung started student teaching when I was a senior at the university." Yoongi starts, "I recognized him from the class, but he says you're much better at the arts than I was, Jungkook."
Jungkook perks up and gives an 'Oh?' to Yoongi before glancing over at Taehyung, who's flashing him a winning smile. He chuckles when Jungkook glances away almost immediately and tries to cover his face with his hair. You watch Taehyung's eyes give him a long, lingering once-over; smile still plastered on his face. A thousand thoughts start to swirl in your head- there's something about Taehyung but you just can't put your finger on what you're feeling.
"Have a late night last night?" Taehyung's voice is smooth and velvety, but not sultry like Yoongi's. You try not to think about it too much so you don't get turned on. His smile has turned into a little teasing smirk, leaning towards Jungkook with an elbow on the table.
Yoongi interjects. "Oh yeah. I heard you mention something about Hoseok. Is he alright?"
Both of you freeze. Jungkook looks at you with pleading eyes. This man you just met, Taehyung- is just as gorgeous as Jungkook made him out to be. In that moment you figure out what that something about him is- he's beautiful and has an air about him that tells you he knows he's beautiful. You definitely believe your best friend when he says people fawn over him all the time. But something about the way he's looking at Jungkook tells you other things- that he knows Jungkook has been flirting with him, and he's totally into it. Maybe. And after all he's done for you, you try to think of something fast to save his ass. You turn and look up at Yoongi.
"He's fine! He just drank way too much last night and Jungkook was nice enough to babysit and make sure he got home safely, since Namjoon went home early."
For a second, as you're locking eyes with Yoongi, your heart pounds so loud in your chest you swear he would hear it. He shakes his head and rolls his eyes.
"Tch. Not surprised. He was always the lush of the group." He sticks out one finger from around his coffee cup to point at Jungkook. "Told you that wasn't Joon's scene. Surprised he even went at all."
He takes a sip of his coffee and you fight the urge to physically express how relieved you are. Thankfully, nobody is left to stew in their thoughts for too long because Taehyung speaks up, looking over at you from behind his wavy hair.
"Are you two on a date? Did we interrupt?"
In a complete twist of his attitude, Jungkook laughs.
"Absolutely not." He responds to Taehyung, almost sounding disgusted. You'd be offended if you didn't know the intricacies of this situation completely. Taehyung keeps looking at you, studying both you and Yoongi, and the wheels in his head seem to start turning. From the few moments you've known Taehyung you can't tell if you like him or not; you like that he's so forward but it also makes it seem like he enjoys drama.
"Is that so?" he laughs. Jungkook's eyes light up watching him laugh, you can see the infatuation written plainly on his face. But for some reason, Taehyung is still looking at you.
"If not Jungkook, do you have a boyfriend, y/n?"

He ignored the shame and guilt inside his chest from the accusation that he threw at his friend earlier.
But that doesn't mean that seeing him touch you like that is fine.
It only sunk into Satoru's head that all of the things that he got angry and jealous about are things he never thought he would see the moment he lets go of you.
When reading this, I realized that maybe before they broke up, Y/N had done such a good job loving him that things like jealousy and insecurity didn’t quite exist in their relationship (besides that thing with Suguru *cough). It was so safe that when he cheated and broke up with her, he did it with ease because while he hurt her, he thought that he would never lose her. He thought he could still have her in his life as a friend, and subconsciously, he wanted Y/N to keep loving him no matter what. And then, after this part, when Y/N gave him back the necklace, losing her became so real that he finally acknowledged the depth of his love for her.
A bit off topic but I always hc in JJK, having Six Eyes helps Satoru process information faster but it doesn’t apply with emotions, and as the result, he’s really emotionally constipated and lacking empathy, so it takes quite a while for him to understand what he is feeling, let alone empathize or open himself up to someone. I feel like it’s kind of the case here with PM!Satoru, except he doesn’t even have Six Eyes here lol.
He'd take whatever request you make if it means he'll get closer to getting you back. But first, he had to confess to Rie and tell her all that had happened.
He knows that he'll be breaking her heart, but he'd rather hurt anyone else than break you again.
It's been two weeks, and you never told Shoko and Suguru of what happened that day.

Just kidding. But this will probably go so wrong UGHHH!!!! I read your answers to some anons, but it doesn’t matter if Y/N’s mom is not Rie’s boss, Y/N will probably be stuck working with Rie in the same building anyway. THE HORROR!!! I think how Rie will treat Y/N after the breakup will decide whether she will get redemption in the readers’ eyes or not. I noticed how you always try to do your best to humanize your characters and give them the benefit of the doubt, even if they’re an “antagonist”, so I’m really looking forward to how this will play out. I mentioned how I disapproved of Satoru and Y/N cheating on Rie, but I like how things are going. If Rie felt like a sinner for wronging Y/N before, it’s Y/N’s turn for that. This essentially makes them an “equal” because both parties no longer have the “power” over another. Both of them are betrayers and are being played by the same man. So their relationship could either turn into hatred or they will make peace with each other (which I doubt :((). Due to how emotional Rie is, her actions are often unpredictable, so I can’t wait to see what will happen next ;)
All in all, we are almost near the end of this story, so Satoru (and maybe Rie) redemption arc starts now? I remember you mentioned that PM might have multiple endings, so I guess Y/N will either end up with Satoru again or dump his ass for rea. I don’t mind her getting back with Gojo, but please give this man growth. I’m sick of his immature ass already. But whatever I say, I have faith you will be able to deliver each ending in the most logical way possible. And I would support you even if this fic has one ending.
Whewwww…. Man…. This whole review is worth 6 pages, and I feel beat after typing it out. Thank you for another good chapter, Kai. I’ve been really enjoying this journey with you so far, and I can’t wait to see how we will make it to the end of it. Can’t wait for your next chap.

Yeah you're right about how yn loved Satoru. Like he said, his feelings were nothing but intense and raging. That's how yn loved him too. Both of them are not the best people, with satoru having commitment issues and yn being a headache to her family, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows but they worked. despite her rebellious nature back then, yn was focused on him and he only realized now that he didn't want to lose that. and that hc is great omg if that becomes canon, then that would be what the strongest is lacking :(( as for that break up and Rie and yn's mom situation, all will be unveiled next chap :> and AH, im really glad that you noticed that balance. how it shifted from being tipped to one side (yn's) to equal. yn and rie are now standing on the same step :')) and satoru better get that behavior glow up if he really wants to get yn back 😭that would be a hard fight, really. since it seems like yn doesnt want anything to do w him :(( anyway THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH OMG , YOU NEVER MISS 👀 that was such a great read !! please, take care of yourself as well and have a great week ahead too <33

Depends on the day really. I feel like most the stuff I’ve drawn of them has been angsty and I like that but I want cute shit too and I’m trying to make more.....it’s just wips though 😭
I think when it comes to the cruel part I always go back to their separation period cuz some shit definitely went down for both of them that we don’t completely see and hnnghhh. It’s where I go insane thinking of Ryan specifically. Like he very clearly isn’t doing good at all, especially performance wise. He gets gigs at retirement homes where his "audience" falls asleep despite the music being loud. He tries just playing in the middle of a party and literally no one pays him attention. I also believe that despite his efforts, Ryan isn’t great at making friends or good impressions. Like idk I can definitely see him trying way too hard but everyone finds him weird or annoying. He can maybe get ppl to stay for a minute but can’t keep it up (ex. his girlfriends). Which made his separation from Min-Gi especially difficult, that’s the only person he thought cared about him, and then it seemingly isn’t true (to Ryan) after battle. He has to live with Min for the first time in his life, and he immediately tries to enter relationships with women to replace the pain left behind by Min (cough gay coding cough). And you just know how he’s trying so despite to make everything work, cuz if he doesn’t it’d mean that he was wrong, his dreams are unrealistic and stupid, and Min might be better off without him. Ryan could find an evil comfort in the idea that Min is just as miserable as he is, and he definitely tries to believe it when he returns because well. It’s fucking true lol. And boy is my man Ryan bottled up he would never say upfront that his solo career went awful because honestly if he did earlier in the season Min would go all bracket mouth smug about it akshjaka
As for the Min-Gi side it’s very uh. It’s far too relatable to me and I don’t like it 😤. I can very much understand why he didn’t wanna just up and leave with Ryan on such short notice with no plan, though I’d probably try to talk about that after singing our funny songs instead of leaving him on stage alone. But where’s the drama in that 🙄 these bitches are mentally ill. Min is then forcing himself to comply to whatever his parents want from him, very much ignoring his painfully strong need to play music with Ryan. There’s no future in music, he must be in FINANCE WITH AN EMPHASIS ON RISK ASSESSMENT. During his intense ass repression (and on the train) he fully believes Ryan is having the time of his life without him, living their dream. He won’t admit it though because he’s again, very repressed and stubborn. But you just know he gets that cassette from Ryan and listens to it 24/7 like "arghhhh....my homosexual desires are back 😤". Okay maybe not but it’s funny to imagine. It’d be pretty damn easy to blame everything on Ryan while acting like he’s in the right for being "smart" and "realistic", and I wouldn’t doubt the possibility that his parents compare the two and remark on how Min ended up so good through all that. And just the feelings of knowing you’re making your parents proud by living someone else’s life is just. OOF. Hits hard. If we go back to gay coding it would be pretty damn likely that part of the Uni Plan was the expectation that Min would meet a girl who he’d date and/or marry. And he plays the role of a straight man despite being desperately gay. So the whole "choosing the gay path despite the fact it won’t make your parents happy" thing is very good I’m always crying about it
This has become increasingly incoherent so that’s the angst shit I feed off of. As for fluff I like when they k-k-kiss 😳

Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye Issue By Issue: Issue #1: How To Say Goodbye and Really Mean It (Patreon Review for Brotoman.exe)
Hello all you happy Autobots. I hope you've packed your ready for a long and lengthy quest as today I undertake one of the longest planned projects i've ever done, courtsey of my newest proud patron, @brotoman-exe. It's the first time in a LONG time i've had a new 5 dollar patron and he seems to be in for the long haul as he's requested monthly reviews of a series that spans over 50 issues and goes into a second volume. And that's not getting into if we cover the dark cybertron crossover, the tie in issue for revolution, or the annuals. But it's one i'm more than happy to do for as long as possible and covers a series near and dear to my heart.
Transformers More Than Meets The Eye is one of my faviorite comics again and the work that got me back into transformers. It's a wonderful epic that is in my faviorite genre of storytelling: A ragtag bunch of misfits who often have no buisness doing what their doing let alone being a group becoming a found family of sorts while proving there more than what both those around them and they themselves think. It's also loaded with humor, character, and giant robots, so what's not to love.
It's also a chance to correct a past mistake. See this isn't my first attempt to do a retrospective of this comic. Back in pride 2021, I did a review of the first three issues of this series, as the series is both one I badly wanted to cover and one that is warmly and greatly represntive, using the fact 90% of all transformers are male to be gay as heck. And I did.. but a combination of an overtaxed schedule, a shaky mental state, and said schedule being flip turned upside down lead to me constantly delaying part 2 before scrapping it entirely and planning to cover the series later. So when Brotoman asked me to cover it monthly, I had only one response
So this is the first project i'm doing over again, and hopefully not the last as I intend to revisit New X-Men at some point, and hopefully this time i'll finish what i've started, however many years it takes. So let's get ready to blast off into space as we meet the crew of the lost light again for the first time. Before we get into the series proper we need to cover what lead us here.
Transformers At IDW
For those less familiar with comics, IDW is a third party comics company that mostly focuses on liscened comics, with highlights being reprinting a bunch of european Duck and Mouse Comics, being the current home of Sonic the Hedgehog, and biggest of all, being the primary home of Hasbros properties: Dungeons and Dragons, My Little Pony, GI Joe and many many more (Including everyone's faviorite Space Knight Rom) got comics here and naturally Transformers was one of the first. And to really get this right, they decided to launch a whole new continuity under transformers legend Simon Furman, who took over for the marvel comic and has written tons of transformers since.
And because I wanted to be throughly prepared for the first time I attempted reviewing this run and to know where things had been I read all of Furman's run and the runs after it to have a good sense of history. Here's an archival photo of me after that experince
Yeah I'm not one to take the side door so i'll come right up front and knock: most of the comics in this continuity before More Than Meets The Eye are mediocre at best and downright awful to sit through at worst. While i'm glad I read them all to have proper context for these reviews, i'm also glad I NEVER have to touch these things again.
Starting with Furman's run which took the idea of "robots in disguise" dead seriously. And some of the ideas are good: having the autobots actualyl use their disgusiese more, a shadowy third party in the war that runs out of a company. They even cleverly redo the headmasters, an old toy gimmick that had aliens pilot transformers, by having them be knockoff transformers needing a pilot to work. There were really solid ideas and reworks of various gimmicky toylines. There's also a variety of good one off stories in the one shots, as furman used Spotlight issues (literally called that) to shed a light on other things going on and expand the story past the main minis.
The problem is that while there were good specks of story here and there, in paticular the series made me a fan of blaster, six shot and has an excellent version of hot rod, if not as good as what more than meets the eye would later do but we'll get tot that, the main story is REALLY boring and dry. The characters don't really have a lot of personality , even my boy starscream, the story moves at a very slugish pace and there's just no levity. I'm not expecting it to be joke o clock but I need more to really keep me going. Ther'es just not a lot here to latch onto or really care about. The ideas are there but the end result wore me out by the end.
Sadly things didn't improve all that much with the next era, All Hail Megatron, a 16 issue maxiseries by Shane Mcarthy that was IDW's first attempt at a soft reboot of this continuity. It would be FAR from the last. I went into this one hopeful despite it having a mixed reception, as the premise is badass and one any transformers fan can get behind: After the autobots decided to leave earth unguarded to deal with another crisis at the end of the last series
Megatron takes the opportunity to conquer earth, and uses a reluctant traitor in the autobots to stage attacks on every other autobot garrison in the galaxy, stranding our heroes and having him have won. Or in simplist most bonechilling turns, Megatron WINS.
So once again we have a good concept: Megatron won, our heroes are left trying to find SOME WAY to turn the tide, and earth is left at his mercy. It should be a no brainer.
The first issue was executive meddling: Apparently Hasbro didn't want McCarthy to show too much of the actual destruction and nightmare that would enuse from their takeover.
So shockingly, numbing the sheer terror and nightmare that ensues when a bunch of technicolor evil robots get to run rampant on the world without anyone to stop them , made the story fall flat. We see some of what they do but without any real damage or stakes it just dosen't have weight.
The next issue is the humans. Most aren't focused on enough with only one, Andy Reid, is really getting what the book should have focused on: normal people stuck in the crossfire when evil wins. It's not a bad concept but with the fangs removed we only get to see it from two perspectives. And one of them.. is Spike Witwicky
Spike is every action hero cliche poured into an action figure mold for an off brand gi joe that somehow became a real boy. Spike is a swaggering dipshit who thinks he's the greatest and the narrative agrees because Spike has snipers trained on it's family and if he dosen't call them every four hours they fire. Having one resourceful hero against the decpticons isn't a bad idea but having this guy be at the front yeesh. And somehow he only gets WORSE with each series.
The other problem is our heroes, spend most of their desperate situation... bickering with one another. I get why: one of them betrayed the others, hope is low, and optimus may be dead. It isn't till Hot Rod shows up with his gaggle of intresting autobots that the story gets some life. I don't mind the autobots having to make their way back or be out of the main action on earth, that's kind of the point. I don't mind it being grim. What I do mind is it taking so long for a lot to happen, and for things to really kick into gear. I'm suprised just how tiresome robots bickering gets but here we are.
Not only that the decpticons themselves are just kinda there.. there's a good idea of Megatron pondering what he does now he's actually won, but it goes nowhere. And that's really the series in a nutshell: it has some great ideas it ocasionally captalizes on but ultimately goes nowhere.
The one bright spot is a tie in mini centered around a character introduced in this series. A character a lot of people really diddn't like at the time: Drift. And I see why: In All Hail Megatron he gets a lot of focus. Problem is Drift is an entirely NEW character Hasbro apparently crammed down fans throats. As usual the homer simpson approach to promoting a character failed.
His mini though was one of those bright spots I mentioned; A decently intresting tail about a city that keeps itself out of the war that finds itself hope to one of the worst of the decepticon army and how it changes the future Drift into a better person. There is a decent amount of standard "we can't interfere because we're self righteous morons who will inevietibly be punished for our hubris" stuff, but Drift himself is engaging and the story does challenge that sort of viewpoint. Also said city and society will be important later as Drift is a main characte rin MTMTE , which helped smooth out the edges and made him into a fan faviorite.
So we're onto phase 3, the ongoing book Transformers by Mike Costa. Mike Costa is a good writer otherwise, what i've read of his x-men run being a fun paced action thrill ride. But this book?
Out of the three main phases before the big relaunch here, this is the one people seem to hate most. And it. Is. JUSTIFIED. The premise is the autobots are on earth, trying to repair the damage done but being hated by the US Goverment and seen as no better than the decpticons. Optimus decides he has to go fuck off to space because that worked out so well last time, and leaves it with bumblebee, which leads to shoddy leadership, conflicts with paper thin analogues for foreign countries, and a lot of humans being stupid and not getting that as incompitent as they are the autobots are the good guy and Hot Rod being an impulsive idiot and trusting a guy literally named Swindle because the constructicons came off as the better option compared to the autobots.
It's a murky mess of plotlines and bad decisions that i've mostly blocked out for my own sanity and won't spend forever recapping here. Ya'll REALLY don't deserve that headache.
Once again a mini series was the ray of light here. Last Stand of the Wreckers. Roberts contributed to the story while the writing and art for it were by Nick Roche, a great artist who contributed to the first arc of MTMTE before the stress of doing a monthly got to him. It's a wonderfully gritty tale that succeeds where the other attempts at being darker failed, following the rough and tumble Wreckers, essentailly the X-Force of the Autbots, as they go on a suicide mission to a prison that's been taken over by the Decepticons, lead among them Overlord, a new character and a throughly terrifying villian that keeps slauthering people and doing terrible things so daddy megatron will notice him at last. It's tense, sad and throughly great nad worth checking out. And like Drift and the Circle of Light, Overlord will also be important later. Last Stand is what helped James put his foot in the door.
What solidified things though was Chaos Theory. I plan to cover this series indepedently when we get to the shadowplay arc, as it's sort of a prequel to that and lays the groundwork for the various trips to past cybertron the series takes. It takes place before the war as tensions bubble and a future member of the MTEMTE cast tries to murder megatron in his cell. It's great, and has a great moment with Megatron admitting his villiany that will be mentioned later in MTMTE.
So shortly after that Chaos happened, a messy finale. To make a long story short, Galvatron, who in this continuity is not the same as megatron, raised an army of zombies called sweeps to raze cybertrona nd later merged with something to become an outer god. Megatron one upped him, things sure did happen, and Roberts helped write the script. The important things are that Cyclonus, Galvatron's old buddy who aided him till he realized he be crazy, turned against his friend nad saved Hot Rod's life, Cybertron was radically transformed into a primal state, and Megatron was defeated.
As a result we get what would kick off the next era of IDW Transformers, an attempt to right the ship by doing something radically diffrent: The war the Autobots waged against the evil forces of the Decpticons.. was over. The Decipticons surrendered. The question was.. what now? What do you do next when you've spent CENTURIES fighting a war? Oceans rise, empires fall but it's much harder when it's on your call.
So that's where this era kicked off with the Death of Optimus Prime. I opted to jump into the series instead of this as while not a terrible start at all, it's where I came in as this issue is in the first MTMTE trade, it's more of a pilot for the sister series Robots in Disguise.
See instead of having a mini series or just one ongoing, this era had two with the split coming in said one shot.
Death of Optimus Prime follows the title character as he finds despite the war being over.. things aren't great. Like at all> The New Reborn Cybertron is having a temper tantrum and causing earthquakes, disasters and what not with most of it REALLY not being safe and only Iacon, which somehow surivived everything, standing. Not only that most of the cybertronians who opted out of the war or abandoned it have returned.. and blame the autobots for everything that happened. The NAILS, as their dresrively called should have a point, that they didn't want any part of this war. It is perfectly valid to object to a war especailly when it's senseless. In this case thoguh it's sorta like objecting to the allies during world war II: Megatron was not going to stop until he had won and would kill anything non cybertronian.
With Optimus unable to repair things due to the matrix of leadership having split right in half like a kit kat bar, our heroes end up divided on the issue after a map is found inside, leading to the mythical Knights of Cybertron, a group that allegedlys founded a Cyber Utopia: Bumblebee wants to stay on Cybertron and try to set up a goverment despite not being wanted. Hot Rod wants to fuck off into space to go find the knights, hoping they have a way to heal the planet, as well as a way to honor their culture instead of buldozing it.
Optimus.. gives them both halves like a parent who just wants his kids to stop fighting and plans to leave, doing so to settle things down since he's the face of war and taking his old name of Orion Pax back.
So the series split into two: Robots in Disguise follows Bumlbee as he tries to make a go of things nad fails as the NAILS won't shut up and Starscream spins circles around him, playing the NAILS well while being awesome because well. he's starscream. He also gets a crown eventually which is wonderful. As you can tell i'm not a big fan of RiD,. RiD is a lot of arguging, people being stupid, and the sympathetic characters being sidelined. It's also a LOT of Prowl who we'll get into in a moment but for now is best summed up as
It gets better in Season 2, with Optimus joining the cast, along with Cosmos a friendly UFO and Sky Linx, whose a giant space dragon thing that's also a space shuttle, as well as Thundercracker and his kitty. But like so many before it's good ideas, bad execution and overall no matter how many times I tried I just couldn't get into John Barbers run. A third mainline book, Windblade (Which later became Till All Are One), was MUCH better and I truly recommend it, with it's writer not only helping fix the verses shaky reputation with women robots (Arcee became one after being born a male transformer via horrifying experiments and became angsty as a result> I shodulnlt' ahve to explain to you why this is bad but someone shoudl've to Simon Furman, who then got into a fight with Windblade's writer over it despite her being objectively right> Their cool now but still.. jesus man) , having fun intrigue and of course my boy starscream in a tiny crown.
So yeah as you can see the IDWverse was a bit shaky, but it had it's bright spots and it's sad it's coming to an end, with it's second reboot having ended after also failing fairly hard and Image now having the rights via it's Skybound imprint. But for all ti's faults, it gave us some bright lights.. and no light was brighter, better, or weirder than the lost one. So with all this exposition handled.. we can finally set off
The Issue Finally
I may comment on the covers on and off, we'll see, and i'll be sticking mainly to the main covers, as there's just so many dang variants and this review is long enough as is, I can't imagine what the others, even withotu the idw exposition, weill be like. This cover is near and dear to my heart, and i'm fully biased on that as it's an homage to one of my faviorite covers of all time that kicked off one of my faviorite runs of all time.
Given the runs are both semi-sitcom (if less so in MTMTE's case) takes on classic properties, it fits like a glove and it won't be the last time we get an homage to this cover as we get two more echoing it: One for season 2 and one.. that I won't spoil because it's a MASSIVE spoiler for the final arc of season 2.
The issue opens with Rodimus giving one hell of a speech to the people of cybertron. It's one of my faviorite scenes in the entire run, and for good reason setting the tone of wonder and exploration that goes in hand with the heart, hyjinks and tragedy of this run.
While he's obviously selling a big epic quest with tons of stakes, what he says there.. and what he says after really underlines the true meaning of the quest
"You Deserve To See The Universe Without A Gun in your hand"
It's a chance for once to enjoy the universe. Even if there's a big, booming underlying goal to everything Rodimus is doing, both the one he says, and the one for his own drive and ego we'll get to shortly, the real appeal to most of these bots watching.. is a chance to start over. No wars waged to destroy the evil war of the decpticons. Just a noble goal, a chance to see the universe, and all the time in the world to do it. It appeals to one of the purest and most loved aspects of sci-fi, what made Star Trek so beloved and what's made works since, from Star Trek's own newest series Brave New Worlds to spirtual spinoff the Orville: The love of exploration, of going out into the world and finding yourself or something new. The wonder of this kind of thing. The fun of setting off into the world and seeing what happens. MTMTE mixes Star Trek's wonder and scope with a bit of Firefly's taking a bunch of scraps from a war and seeing what they do next, and is helpfully not created by a guy who sucks dirty ass in thunderstorms, so that's nice.
Speaking of sucks dirty ass in thunderstorms, watching this along with cybertron is Prowl
Prowl is an overly paranoid, overly fascist police officer who feels the war isn't ended. He also sucks and I hate him. He's with Wheeljack who dosen't suck and in fact has a realy cool helmety face i've always loved. Wheeljack predicts a max exodus as let's face it, who dosen't want to fly up into space in a giant ship and explore the stars. Prowl however thinks it'll be a non event and that his calculations show barely anyone leaving
Yup as usual Prowl is wrong about people, what's going on in the world and the general concept of things, and the next day, the day most of the issue takes place, a GIANT crowd is lined up to board the lost light. IT's almost as if the guy who thinks the war still isn't over can't grasp that people no longer want to fight it and just want to get on with their lives.
We'll resume the "Prowl Sucks and I Hates Him" hour in a moment as we transfer from one of the worst versions of a G1 Autobot to one of the best, as Ratchet is overseeing a NAIL protester who transformed himself to death. While i'll have to admit I hadn't seen really ANY of G1 going into this comic, or into this retrospective , Ratchet already had a place in my heart thanks to transformers animated and the fact he's about the same here, a crotchety old legend who ends up with a bunch of younger less prestigious weirdos for his own reasons, was a big up.
Ratchet admits he could've saved the guy had his hands not been shaky. We also get one of the best terms in all of transfomers
It really highlights roberts approach to the franchise: unlike other works in this verse, Roberts isn't afraid to embrace how silly things are. He got away not only with naming something rigormorphis.. but having the dead body transform wtih the old cartoon sound effects. Yet at the same time it underlines how he treats things: he's not afraid to fully embrace the silliness of the franchise or crack jokes, it's what keeps this work so great.. but he also does everything with a purpose. Rigor Morphis, while darkly hilarious.. is also a geninely intresting concept that fits perfectly with the world. Roberts is dedicated to geninely building up how Cybertronians function, their culture and their unverse and taking it seriously enough to still work, but with enough good humor and sense that this is a franchise built upon selling toys, comics, tv shows and other merchandise to not take himself TOO seriously. It's an approach I hope future shows including the upcoming at the time of this review Earthspark take to heart.
Naturally given he has focus, Ratchet is joining the ship which bumblebee takes with all the grace and civlity of a 12 year old. LEADER OF ALL OF CYBERTRON FOLKS. He needs him here, but Ratchet makes a valid argument why he wants to leave: he's served every prime since Nominus and thus has been at this for a LONG time, and knows his number will be up eventually. Since Rodimus has promised to pick up any strays they find on the way who were lost since not EVERYONE from the war has been found just yet, Ratchet sees it as the perfect opportunity to find and train a replacement, his swan song. It again underlines a common theme with the Lost Lighters and this work as a whole: It's not the journey it's the destination. As we'll see most people join not for the knights of cybertron quest, but simply to find something else. For Ratchet it's a chance to pass his legacy on and make sure his knowledge and skills live on long after what time he has left is gone.
We next meet Cyclonous, who as I said was part of the whole Galvatron mess. He's an ancient warrior, a bot out of time who awoke to find a cybertron he didn't like and that now it's only gotten worse with the primal reversion, the gleaming cities he remembers from Cybertron's golden age now replaced with a nightmarish landscape.
Why he's leaving is obvious: On a Cybertron that throws him in with the Decepticons depsite not really being one and that is unrecognizable, what reason has he to stay? He finds signs of life in a cave though that seem familiar and heads to check them out.
We next get more prowl
And this is where he REALLY shows his ass.. or whatever transfomers have that serves as an ass. Point is he's dressing down his old partner in both senses of the word Chromedome for leaving.
Yeah as we'll find out a few issues from now said "talent" is mnemosurgery: Chromedome can break into a bots mind for information, which was used as an interregation tool both pre-war as a cop and during the war as Spec Ops. It's also a talent Chromedome BLATANTLY dosen't want to use again.
He's had to do TERRIBLE things for the war and like most soldiers, especially those suffering from Trauma which Domey canocially does, he's carried enough of the war with him. He's earned a right to live his life without having to keep doing the things that haunt him.
This is all recorded by Chromedome's current Conjux Endura, Rewind whose pointedly Prowl's oppisite: he geninely supports Chromedome wanting to get away from what he used to be and heal into what he CAN be, he's a non combatant having as we lean a memory stick for an alt mode, and he's calm and gentle to Prowl raving like a paranoid luantic.. which dosen't remotely let up after
Yeah the table flipping apparently became so memetic it got turned into a running gag as well as canocially just something he does a lot.

So as he radios some agents on board the LL to load some cargo, which shockingly is not remotely a good thing and we'll get to much later in the series what that cargo actually is, we can get into why I hate Prowl so much.
Prowl is a narcist,and a facist, the latter terms can be thrown around haphazzardly, so I am treading carefully.. but it applies and is fully necessary here. Prowl dosne't care for anyone else on an emotoinal level, only what they can do for him, only seems to think he's right even undermining OPTIMUS FUCKING PRIME later in the verse, and being blatnatly descrimtory to the nails and decipticoons. I'm not saying either group has issues: The Deciptcons were the bad guys and while some geninely want to reform or not be mistreated, many are just as bad as ever, and the NAILS, while having some valid points, have a majority of them screeching said points. Prowl cares for nothing and nobody except his own warped version of right and wrong that involves tourture, no real cybertronian rights, and Prowl being judge jury and executioner. He's everything wrong with policing wrapped into one character. He dosen't want the war to end because of one sad simple truth: he's obsolete without it. He's the kind of soldier, the kind of cop, the kind of person who fights not because it's the right thing to do, not because there's no better option, not like any of his commrades.. but because he ENJOYS it. He enjoys killing, tourtruing and doing this and framing it all as the greater good when really it's just him wanting to be the hero because without the trappings of war, he's just a bully who refuses to move on like everyone else is trying to do. It dosen't help that as far as I can tell he SURIVIVES the entire run of this universe.
I just.. needed to get my rage out NOW so I can move on and focus on the characters I actually like. Speaking of which next we meet Tailgate, a tiny transformer whose suffering from a bad case of no legs, having fallen down the hole six million years ago and preparing to blow some shit up to escape.
We next meet Whirl. Whirl is someone with severe issues, both with impulse controls and mentlaly a former wrecker fired for reasons that'll be revealed dramatically later who is tryign to talk out his issues.. to a pile of dead sweeps, clones of Scourge, another friend of Cyclonuses.. and why he comes in. Naturally Whirl's first instinct on being found in a room full of sorta corpses is to try and murder the witness.
We then get a bunch of intros, starting with Red Alert, the ships mildly paranoid and gruff head of security who in turn lets three new additions to our main cast onto the ship: First up is Brainstorm, a mad scientests mad scientest who has a neat look and a briefcase that for some reason Rodimus is letting him just take on board without remotely checking which can't posisbly backfire
That Chekov's gun got a WHILE before it fires off though so onto our next crewmember: Swerve!
Swerve is a small, mouthy little autobot who can't seem to shut up. So naturally he's one of my faviorites as just how long this review is this far in should tell you I also cannot shut up. So I relate to him, and parts of his character that come up later, heavily.
Next we have Rung, a brand new character.. though it can be hard to tell. As you can probably see at this point, while James isn't immune to using more prominent autobots (Hot Rod, Ultra Magnus, Ratchet, Cyclonus), he's also fond of taking characters who mostly existed just to sell more toys and really fleshing them out. IT's why many of these characters got new toys and Swerve and Tailgate in paticular were part of Walmart's g1 risues.. still haven't been able to get my hands on those or any of the lost light crew aside from Megatron. And yes Megatron joins the crew in season 2. We'll get to that in a year or so, but yes that actually happens. And it is as awesome as it sounds.
But Rung is brand new, a psyctrist whose alt mode is unknown. That as you've probably guessed by now is also a plot point. He collects models of ships and is an intresting addition that shows Optimus' compassion: While rung was a psychatrist pre-war too, as we'll see in a flashback arc later, the fact Optimus brought one in despite having no combat value shows why he's well Optimus. At least for now> This is pre his "I'm going to conquer earth for the greater good!' phase> Which also happened and isn't as awesome as it sounds. Rung ends up getting knocked over by Cyclonus and Whirl.
Before we get to them though we check back with our main trio. And it's here i'd like to get into how I found this book. See I get most of my comics digtially and through Comixology, a spinoff of amazon that has large amounts of comics digtially at lower prices than retail and that's before we get into the sheer amount of sales. It's more cost effective for me than print so i've been using it for some time now. And if that weren't enough they have a netflix-style subscripton service, comixlolgy unlimited which for 6 bucks a month gives you an ungodly amount of access to tons upon tons of comics. If you want to check out idw's transformers before the lsiecne dries up, this is the best way as pretty much everything from it is on there by now
So when they added the first seasons of RiD and MTMTE I was curious, not only because LIndsay Ellis had mentioned this continuity had gay robots but because both sounded intresting. It was simply a matter of which to read first.. and RiD won for fairly simplye and rediculous reasons: I've always deeply liked hot rod and a comic seemingly starring him seemed great. The fact it ended up ticking a LOT of storyteling boxes I like was icing on an already great cake
As for why the first is the dumbest: he looks dope. I still want SOME non-bay version of him on my shelf. The less dumb reason is that after watching the bay movie as a teen and enjoying it, I hopped on my computer when I got home and desperate for more cool robots, found transformers the movie. It remains one of my favoirite pieces of the franchise and a film I intend to cover at some point as I fucking love it. Keep in mind I went in blind so I didn't know the various dead bodies were actual characters, nor that a lot of the new cast came out of nowhere, but even knowing that now I still have an attachment to the season 3 cast. Not season 3 itself as I haven't watched it and i'm clearly better off that way from what i've seen via Phelous, but thed characters had great design, were fun to watch, and were part of a film I loved> The film's also why I love Grimlock so damn much, as should we all. I have one but I want more because you can neve rhave enough talking robot dinosaurs. Same with STARSCREAM, who I do need a figure of, who is glorious as always.
So having an attachment ot Hot Rod and Ultra Mags, not so much Cyclonus but this comic made me love him so hey, it was an easy sell. And i'm glad I did as this is easily the best version of him i've encountered: James took a character that was hot headed and impulsive and had made some stupid decisions, and decided to lean into it. As such Rodimus is impulsive, egotistical, and when we see it is bragging about hwo many crew he's got like a ten year old who just got a cooler transformer than his most hated friend. He's also endearing: it's clear this quest means a lot to him, he cares about his crew and while he may be an ipulsive hammy manchild, he's a cool one. He's basically james t kirk if he were less horny and more hopped on skittles.
With him are two contrasts: Drift whose been made into a new agey samurai who constantly tries to stay peppy and Ultra Magnus, who in this continuity is a giant stickler to the rules who vies wearing your autobadge at an angle as a high crime, isn't fond of his new crew, and is the defention of hardass. The two ballance him out with Drift being the encouragment Rodimus needs and a reminder of the spirftual part of the journey and Ultra Magnus being the hard nosed voice of reason our hero needs.. while also having such a stick up his whatever a transformer has that substitues for an ass that he's a comedic foil. Rodders and Mags are bascially Jake Peralta and Captain Holt without the father son angle, with drift just kinda there, but still not half bad.
So back at the fight Cyclonus shows his character as he dosen't WANT to do this, Swerve is just trying to you know murder him. Meanwhlie Tailgate has been passing out on nad off for the last 6 millon years and prepares to finally ignite the energon.
As if this wasn't enough, the unambgiously gay duo and Ratchet are heading for the ship, with the happy couple bickering a tad as Chromedome tends to bring up the fact his boyfriends alt mode isn't a vehicle. Thei rinterrupted by the fight, with Swerve having one and preparing to execute cyclonus and blaming him for his own issues.. btu Ratchet isn't remotely fooled, figuring Cyclonus might of done something but can't talk Swerve down. Thakfully a giant energon explosion can and our heros decide to load the two on the ship and let Rodimus sort it out, along with Tailgate who shows up talking about a ship and assuming it's their ship bring him along for repairs.
Rewind plans to catch up.. after buying some mysterious but clearly shady discs from Swindle.
Thus we come to our ending. Rodimus prepares to take off and refuses to take a call from Bumblebee and we get some great comedic timing
Shockingly Prowl ISN'T to blame but we'll get to that next issue. The important thing is that cybertron thinks everyone is dead for now.. and blames Prowl because I would too if I didnt know they sere still alive. Hell if I didn't know why the engine malfunctoned i'd still think it was an ATTEMPT to kill them
But it isn't, they simply jumped with their quantum engines (their verision of lightspeed) too soon, so as a result they got shot halfway around the galaxy , the ships damaged and many of the crew go flying out it onto a planet, with Rodimus planning to retrive them. We end the main story on rodimus getting some.. less than stellar news when he sees what he thinks is a meteor shower
The issue itself ends on a message from the future... with a bunch of foreshadowing of what's to come...
Where this is from.. well that's for season 2 to settle as is everything else, but it's amazing just how far in advanced Roberts had this planned out as where it comes from was always intended. As for where.. you'll just have to stay on the ship won't you? One last bit of buisness before we depart though
A Most Precious Soundtrack
So one notable thing about the series is it has a soundtrack, with James Roberts, much like fellow comics mastermind Kireon Gilleon, picking out some tracks for each issue, with a few exceptions, as well as a theme song for each season. So having not listened along in the past as I tend to binge read a lot of the time, I thought it'd be fun to give these songs a listen and see what sticks out, what I think, how it fits the issue etc. I'll dot the character themes in with these early issues, but for now i'll just be focusing on the theme for the season and the two tracks for this issue. I'd also like to thank wadapan over at the transformers community wiki who saved this sountrack for us all , which is what I found via google. Let's begin.
Season 1 Theme/Series Theme: Lost Coastlines- Okkervil River
An upbeat indie song about the band itself struggling to hold it together, using the metaphor about a two sailors going into unknown territory, which fits the comics themes of self doubt, exploration and strife as well as it's tone, upbeat yet full of angst, adventure and longing under the service. I'll likely have this one on repeat post review.
Across the Universe- Fiona Apple
This one I had sought out before for reasons that escape me now. The song itself is a fairly beautiful, very 90's cover. I still prefer the original and version from the movie Across the Universe (Another one for the massive pile of "Stuff I want to review at some point). It's not bad and at first I wasn't sure how much it fit.. but "nothings going to change my world" actually fits the story really well: Our heroes are setting out and get nothings going to change their world. A bit more literal than obviously intended, but still a nice little pun.
Fun fact, the image for this on youtube and likely other services is from the Plesantville soundtrack, a movie I do want to see at some point and sounds fairly good about two teens ending up in a black and white sitcom. But the cover is uh.. it's a lot folks.
Like I know a gimmick of the film is characters going into color but... why does someone set a tree on fire. Why are they making out in front of it. Are these characters even in the movie? I have all the questoins about plesantville, this soundtrack and its marketing team and none of the time to answer them.
Absent Friends- The Divine Comedy
Now this one fits way better. It fits the hustle and bustle, the idea these characters are leaving and may never come back (and with the issue ending explosion it's thought they won't). I really like the western tone of this, it's really neat and I may have to check this band out more. Cool stuff
So with that we're finally finished. This review was a lot and a lot of fun and next month we see who lived, who died and meet Swerve.

imagine you are ali mills schwarber, you’re in the middle of divorcing your husband and father of your two children. you get a facebook friend request out of the blue of your ex from high school. your relationship ended badly, he started a whole "to the death" rivalry with this cute new kid from jersey after he saw you and him flirt on the beach. he has no pictures or information on his facebook profile. you accept the friend request because, hey you’re getting divorced and maybe you’re just feeling a little reckless. you send him a pretty standard "it’s been so long" message. he proceeds to like every single one of your pictures since the creation of your account and messages you the most basic, non descriptive reply in the world. you wonder if you should really get into a conversation with him (and you’re going through so much right now, it might be a bad time).
he posts five pictures of himself in a sleeveless black gi to his facebook account. you tell him you’re gonna be in town and you tell your mom to NOT expect you back home too soon on the day you’re meeting him.
you’re here to get your FLIRT on, you’re here for DRAMA, you’re here to maybe FUCK your ex! you go to the country club christmas party with him for the scandal of it and then your OTHER EX is there! you’re like oooh, maybe this will be fun and okay, you’re not gonna flirt with him because he’s married and his wife is cool but hey, your first ex is still very much an option and… oh… wait… your first ex ends up being wayyyy more interested in his rivalry with your second ex, the cute new kid now turned cute car salesman and god, that rivalry is STILL going on. you end the evening having played peacemaker between the both of them and you’re told your first ex might have a girlfriend? also now he drives a mom van.

Whatever is going on with Sage’s dad is enough to keep me hooked on Ranger Academy rn. I get the apprehension from fans though. This is Boom’s first story where everything hinges on completely new characters, without relating to other existing characters like in Universe. It is funny to me that it’s like “oh yeah we go find the monks and they tell us our color” bro you are already wearing your color your fate is predetermined. Can’t wait for them to introduce ranger midichlorians. I also have thoughts on the personality things but I’ll come back to that once I’ve actually read the issue
Rhianth's deal is definitely the most interesting thing going on rn, as he's clearly an ex-Ranger and/or has a bad outlook on Ranger Academy (so I already agree with him on something, lmao.) The trio of kids are cute but also pretty standard as of right now, so Rhianth sticks out here. And yeah, obviously this will probably be explained as we get more insight into how Ranger Academy operates but I'm not really sure what the point is for them to be clearly ranked by colors if you have to go find out your "actual" ranger color later. Is it just a Yu-Gi-Oh GX Duel Academy situation? And do students like.....all operate under one power source or do the monks give them unique suits/powers? Again, I'm sure this will all be explained, but uuhgghghghhh i do not like ranger school conceptssssssss
Overall, in a way I do think it's refreshing that BOOM clearly wants to give completely original stories in the PR universe a try, and maybe Power Rangers Universe was kind of a way to test the waters safely by showing off the Phantom Ranger when it was really about the Squadron Rangers, but it's also a harder sell for audiences both casual and hardcore to offer a story with very little recognizable Power Ranger elements. And like how in my case, I went into it not being a fan of ranger schools AND personality deciding your color, so the book REALLY has to be good in order to win me over lol

Chapter 1: Memories
Aaliyah’s POV- Home
“I can’t believe you convinced me to go to summer camp.” I said, looking at my sister, Gina. “Hey, you could use a change of scenery. Especially after the breakup with Ricky.” She replied, as I shook my head. “Can we please not say his name?” I asked, putting clothes in my suitcase.
“See, it’s been a year and you still can’t say it. You have to get out of Salt Lake!” She exclaimed, and I closed my eyes. “It was a shitty breakup, Gi! You saw how everything went down with him and Nini.” I responded, as she zipped her bag.
“You have to get over it one day, Aaliyah. Can’t go back to school without being able to look at him.” She noted, and I closed mine.
“If and when he apologizes, I’ll consider it.” I retorted, as she exhaled. “You’d have to speak for him to do that, but okay.” She agreed, hearing the doorbell ring. “Girls, your ride is here!” Our mom, Terri, exclaimed, and we grabbed our stuff. Once we said our goodbyes, we got in the car, our friend Kourtney sitting in the front seat.
“Hey!” She beamed, hugging me tightly. “Hi Kourt.” I said, trying to force a smile. She pulled back, looking at me. “I know that face…who said his name?” She asked, and I shook my head. “Guilty.” Gina chimed in, as Kourtney looked at her.
“She’s still not over Ricky? After an entire year?” She questioned, Gina nodding. “She can’t even look at him.” She added, as I inhaled.
“We are not spending the entire summer talking about my ex!” I yelled, and they were quiet. “Somebody has to.” Gina mumbled, as Kourtney started driving. I put my headphones on, memories of Ricky and I now flooding my brain.
“So you haven’t dated since the breakup?” Carlos asked, and I shook my head. “I can’t even think about liking someone else, Carlos.” I answered, as he inhaled. “Honey, it’s been 6 months. You should be past the stages of grief. Why aren’t you?” He inquired, and I shrugged.
“I keep getting stuck in the anger and depression stages.” I responded, seeing him nod. “Well, you should journal about it. Maybe you’re holding emotions.” He noted, as I nodded.
I must’ve fallen asleep, because Gina is shaking me. “We’re here.” She said, her voice excited. I got out of the car, my body quickly waking up once my bags were in my hands.
“Welcome to Shallow Lake!” Kourtney gushed, as we walked through the entrance. People are everywhere, already talking in groups.
“Girls!” Carlos yelled, running to us. We’re wrapped in a group hug, laughing.
“Hi Carlos.” I said, as his face dropped. “You look..happy.” He noted, as I raised an eyebrow. “Why wouldn’t I be happy?” I asked, and he looked at Gina and Kourtney. “You didn’t tell her?” He inquired, as their eyes widened.
“Shit, I completely forgot.” Gina cursed, her face dropping. “Tell me what?” I questioned, looking at them.
“Summertime!” A voice beamed, as I froze. “That.” Gina muttered, turning around. I turned slightly, seeing Ricky standing behind us. His face switched, shock all over it. “Aaliyah.” He said, phrasing it like a question.
“I can’t do this.” I replied, turning around and walking away. I could hear Gina calling me, but I didn’t listen, going straight into the cabin.
Ricky’s POV- Boys Cabin
“What’s going on with Aaliyah?” I asked, and Carlos looked at me. “I know that you’re a little slow, but I didn’t think that you were this dense.” He scoffed, as I feigned hurt. “How am I being dense?” I questioned, and he fully turned to face me.
“Have you spoken to Aaliyah in the last year?” He asked, as I shook my head. “Not since the breakup, she doesn’t even look at me.” I answered, trailing off after the last sentence. “Shit. I’m what’s going on with her.” I realized, as he nodded. “This is barely my business to tell, but we can’t even say your name around her. She shuts us down every single time.” He revealed, shaking his head.
“It’s been a year though, I thought she’d be over it.” I replied, as he threw a pillow at me. “Unlike you, Richard, she didn’t run into the arms of her ex. You didn’t even offer her an apology!” He chastised, and I moved the pillow. “You two were best friends before you started dating, hell you were together for almost a year. An apology was the bare minimum.” He said, sighing.
“You think I should talk to her?” I asked, as he nodded. “Not tonight, obviously. I’d text Gi first so they could ease her into it. Probably gives you some time to be around her.” He answered, and I grabbed my phone. “Thanks Carlos.” I said, as he put his thumb up.
Aaliyah’s POV- Cabin
“I can’t believe neither of you told me that Ricky was gonna be here.” I sighed, as Gina gasped. “You said his name!” She exclaimed, and I looked at her. She is right, that’s the first time I’ve said his name in possibly a year. “We didn’t know how you’d react to him, Liyah. We’re sorry.” Kourtney added, and I took a breath.
“But, you do have to be in the same space for like- two months. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to try and be around him.” She proposed, as I raised an eyebrow. “Like in the musical?” I asked, as she nodded. “You can’t mess it up for everyone just because of what happened between you two. It wouldn’t be fair.” Gina chimed in, and I groaned. “Fine.” I agreed, grabbing my jacket.
“Where are you going?” Kourtney inquired, as I looked at her. “Somewhere.” I answered, walking out of the cabin. I was walking aimlessly, not having a true destination in mind. “Aaliyah!” Ricky called, running to my side. “Ricky.” I noted, not looking at him. “Hi.” He exhaled, as we kept walking.
It’s quiet for a moment, and I took a breath. “Are you stalking me now? What the hell do you want?” I asked, looking at him. “I’m not goddamn stalking you, so you can lose the attitude.” He spat, as I rolled my eyes. “I have every right to have an attitude with you, especially after what you did!” I fumed, and he inhaled.
“You do.” He mumbled, as we stopped moving. “Can we talk about-” He began, and I shook my head. “No. We are not rehashing our relationship. I’m only going to be cordial with you because my sister and friends want me to, but that is it. I’m not ruining the play for everyone because of my emotions.” I declared, as he stared at me. “Okay.” He agreed, holding his hand out.
I tilted my head, confused. “I’m shaking on it. Simply so we’re truly in agreement.” He said, realizing it. I put my hand in his, almost shuddering at the touch as we shook hands. I quickly let go, turning in the opposite direction. “Is it true that you couldn’t say my name?” He asked, and I swallowed nervously.
“I had no reason to, you left.” I answered, walking away. I made it back to the cabin, laying in my bunk.
