INT: NEW HOME/HALLWAY - DAY

A door opens. Light fills the hallway and feet step forward into the house moving into..

INT: NEW HOME/KITCHEN - DAY

The sound of FOOTSTEPS echo on the wooden floorboards and a CARDBOARDBOX is placed on the counter. A WOMAN (36) worn but beautiful. She looks amongst the few boxes of her possessions cluttered around the room.

With a SIGH she picks up a box labelled KITCHEN and begins to open it. A pale line around her ring finger, she roughly rips off the tape and reaches into the box for a kettle and mugs.

Making herself a cup of herb tea, the colours spread through the water. She lifts the mug, breathing in its sweet aroma, and looks to the light pouring from a nearby window.

EXT: NEW HOME/GARDEN - DAY

Delicately gripping her mug, the woman steps outside into the garden into the clean crisp air. The wind breathes onto her face, sending a strand of her golden hair into her face. She tucks the strand behind her ear.

She tightly grips her hot mug and holds her scarf closer around her neck. The garden is overgrown, only home to rotting leaves and dead brambles.

Carefully treading through the dirt, the woman heads to the edge of her garden. Leaning over the rotting wooden fence she admires the woodlands surrounding her and closes her eyes. Crows caw.

EXT: TOWN/MARKET STALL - DAY

The sounds of chatter and excitement fill the busy market street. The woman admires WHITE LILY, and admires it sadly, gently caressing the petals with her fingertips.

A HANDSOME MAN (42) that works at the stall approaches and smiles charmingly at the woman, his eyes sparkling. She awkwardly blushes and quickly looks away, shuffling further down the stall.

She eyes a display of seed and bulbs, collects a few, and pays an OLDER MAN (64) also working at the stall, avoiding the handsome man’s glance. She tucks her items into her canvas bag, and steps away from the stall.

EXT: NEW HOME/GARDEN - DAY

Under a grey sky the woman begins work in the garden, raking dead leaves and gathering dead twigs. The woman cuts the brambles, cutting her hand on the thorns. Wincing, she pulls her hand back, Blood seeps from her cut. She closes her eyes

[insert daydream]

Her eyes open.

INT: NEW HOME/KITCHEN -DAY

Washing her hands in the sink, blood and dirt seeps into the water. She opens a Box labelled BATHROOM, pulling out disinfectant and plasters she dresses the wound.

Frustrated she grabs a bottle of red wine from the countertop and pours herself a glass. She holds the glass in front of her, hypnotised by the deep red liquid.

She empties it in the sink, pouring the rest of the bottle too and watches it swirl down the drain.

EXT: NEW HOME/GARDEN - DAY

Reaching into a plastic bag, Freya removes some gardening gloves and puts them on. Rolling up her sleeves she begins to work on the garden again. Cutting away at the brambles, a vertical scar is revealed on her wrist to her forearm.

EXT: WOODLANDS - DAY

A white mushroom peeks out from amongst the foliage of the earth. A crouched Freya carefully picks it up and places it in her basket.

Standing up she begins to walk deeper into the woodlands. A twig snaps beneath her boot, and she hears a cry from behind her. She glances back, listening.

Turning a corner around the base of a large tree, she steadily approaches a bush. Gently, she pulls back the branches. Inside a young doe, curled up on the ground with a wounded leg whimpers.

Freya gasps, and reaches slowly towards the doe, presenting her hand to her. The doe stretches out to sniff Freya’s hand, and nudges it with her nose. Freya lets out a little smile.

INT: NEWHOME/LOUNGE - NIGHT

The fireplaces crackles and fills touches the room with a rich golden glow. The doe is nestled on a cushion enjoying the warmth, her leg freshly bandaged in a makeshift cast.

Freya is curled up in her chair reading a book. She looks up above the pages at the doe. Her lonely eyes reflect the light, sparkling. A soft smile grows on her face.

EXT: NEW HOME/GARDEN - DAY

The garden is now clear, with fresh soil churned and exposed. Freya begins planting seeds and bulbs. She looks up at the doe curled up on blankets near the house. The doe silently watches her, interested. Drops of rain start to fall from the sky, gentle at first and then suddenly heavier. Freya stands up from the ground and rushes back inside, the doe limping inside behind her.

INT: NEW HOME/BATHROOM - DAY

Soaked to the bone Freya starts to remove her clothes. She catches herself in the mirror and stares back at herself. She looks down at her stomach, and strokes the stretch marks on her belly. Tears start to fall down her face.

The doe peers at her from the doorway, then begins to limp towards her and nudges Freya’s back, then moves to where Freya’s hands rest on her belly and starts to nibble her fingers.

Freya smiles through her tears and leans down to the doe. The doe licks away her tears. Freya giggles and pets her.

EXT: NEW HOME/GARDEN - DAY

The grass has begun to sprout but it’s still too early for the flowers yet. Freya works on the garden, while humming to herself. The doe, leg starting to heal, explores the garden, but keeps Freya in her sight. The doe leans towards the ground and picks up a feather.

Feeling a nudge on her elbow Freya looks up and the doe presents her the large white feather. A wide grin spreads across Freya’s face, she takes the feather and strokes the doe, the doe her nibbles and licks her fingers.

INT: NEW HOME/LOUNGE - NIGHT

Freya gently places the feather proudly on the mantelpiece above the roaring fireplace, then looks back at the doe. The doe nudges her hand with her nose.

Freya smiles then walks towards the sofa. She curls up and picks up her book. The doe follows her, no longer limping and climbs onto the sofa beside her and settles. They both silently enjoy the warm glow of the fire.

EXT: WOODLANDS - DAY

Freya treads through the woodlands, the doe following closely behind her. They stop at the bush where the first met.

Freya kneels in front of the doe sadly, and begins to remove the cast from the doe’s leg. Tears start to fall down her face.

The doe nibbles at Freya’s chin and then licks her face. Freya can’t help but chuckle through the tears. As she stands she strokes her fingertips along the does face one last time.

They look at each other for a moment, and then the doe turns and walks away. Freya begins to cry again.

INT: NEW HOME/KITCHEN – LATE AFTERNOON

Freya steps into the kitchen and removes her scarf. She glances at the one last, small cardboard box on the floor. It’s unlabelled.

She picks it up carefully and places it on the table. She takes a deep breath. Carefully opening the box she reaches inside and takes out a photo frame. Her fingers gently caress the glass. She reaches into the box again and pulls out a teddy bear.

INT: NEW HOME/LOUNGE - EVENING

Freya reaches up and places the photo on the mantelpiece above the fireplace. The photo is of her baby bundled in pink blankets.

She carefully picks up the feather and displays it next to the photo frame. She admires the mantelpiece solemnly, then shuffles towards the sofa.

She lies down on the sofa and curls up, hugging tight the teddy bear. A tear falls down her face. The fire embers start to die. The room fades into darkness.

EXT: NEW HOME/GARDEN - DAY

Spring has arrived and the flowers of the garden are in bloom. Freya is on her knees, her fingers in the dirt humming to herself.

The breeze caresses her face, blowing a strand of hair past her eyes. She tucks it behind her ear. She pushes herself up from the ground and sighs lightly, admiring her garden. Twigs snap from behind her. She spins round, glancing behind her.

The doe has returned. The doe glances behind her. A baby foal steps forward behind her mother’s legs. Freya gasps joyfully, a large grin spreading across her face, tears start to stream down her face.

They exchange glances and the doe joyfully nudges her nose into the air. Freya closes her eyes. The birds sing.

EXT: TOWN/MARKET - DAY

The town street is loud, with noises of busy people excitedly browsing wares. The flower stall is busy, with bright and beautiful flowers on display.

Freya happily admires the RED ROSES, caressing the petals with her fingertips. The handsome man approaches, a charming smile growing across his face. Freya smiles back.

They hold each other’s gaze smiling. He picks up a single rose and presents it to her. She accepts.

Animal Crossing prompt

You turn on your Switch and go straight towards the Animal Crossing: New Horizonsgame application and tap “A” to open the game. The familiar title screen and happy music pops up showing Fauna sweeping the plaza in front of Resident Services. You tap “A” again which takes you to Isabelle with your daily news; or lack thereof. As usual, there is no new news but Isabelle did get to talk to Mom and Dad back home and they are doing well. Isabelle lets you go to have another great day on the island and the next screen has you walking out of your house onto a path surrounded by a field of flowers. Your mailbox is blinking and beeping at you saying that it has new mail for you. You open said mailbox to find the floor lights you ordered from the Nook Shopping app and a letter from Freya stating she forgot why she was writing you. You have the perfect plan for the floor lights; you have an area of your island dedicated to becoming a movie theater and you are going to put the floor lights as the edging along the cliff sides of the elevated area.

You make your way along the paths outside of your house in a circle around your island. The first destination that you go to on your island is the rock garden that you have organized; hopefully today you’ll get another piece of gold ore! Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen but there’s always tomorrow or if you really needed one today you could use a Nook Miles Ticket and travel to a remote island or maybe a friend would trade with you for some gold ore. You leave rock garden and make your way through the fruit orchard you have; you have rows of all five island fruits and of course the coconuts trees are on the beach. Once you leave this area, it’s a little disorganized; you haven’t gotten to designing a layout for all of your island yet so you just have a patch of trees here waiting for what you decide to do with the area next. You dig up a couple of fossils that usually spawn in this area and continue on your way to where you plan to have your movie theater.

You pass by your market place that you designed with stalls of different colors selling a hodge-podge of whatever small items you could get your hands on that looked nice in a market setting. Next to the market place was Nook’s Cranny, you remind yourself to go back later to sell the fossils after you’ve found them all and have had them analyzed. You’ve played this game enough to finish finding all the fossils for the museum so now the fossils you do find are just turned in for cold, hard Bells. You make it to the beach and start heading south along the island, past the elevated arcade center you have and the fountain plaza you built to look out over the ocean with your villagers. You make it to an area at the southwest side of your island that has a bunch of random items you put there to bring up the ranking of your island. You needed to figure out what you were going to design this part of the island to be as well. There’s a bridge that heads to the main land and gyroid next to the cliff leading to the plaza and arcade; the gyroid is collecting money for a staircase and you already know that none of the villagers will donate bells in a timely manner and that it will be up to you to fund the staircase.

You cross the bridge and arrive in the neighborhood you created for all your villagers. There are paths surrounding the whole thing, every villager has the same amount of space for you to put items that match their personalities and you have nice fences around each house. This is the first area that you plotted and pulled together and you’re really proud of it because it took a lot of work to get up enough Bells to move everyone’s houses around to the best positions; there were some times where you had to move a house multiple times because it didn’t line up with the grid you made, but that’s okay because in the end it looks very good! As you make your way through the neighborhood, you stop and talk to Agnes and Bluebear who are having a discussion about an old fashion magazine Bluebear found. You continue on to the east and come upon the Resident Services plaza and the museum; plus, it seems like Leif is here selling flowers and bushes today. You don’t have all the fossils yet so there’s no point in going to the museum yet, but you do stop by Resident Services for your daily Nook Miles.

You leave and make your way southeast, finally coming to the plot of land that you have set aside to be your movie theater. You walk up the staircase to the elevated area and see that there are several simple panels customized to look like movie credits, a “red carpet” design you created and have painted on the ground, some vending machines and a popcorn machine and a cotton candy stand, and you have beach towels laid out on the ground with stuffed bears of different sizes sitting faced towards the screen. All that’s left are the floor lights to go on either side. But that won’t be finished today considering the fact that you can only order five items per day. So, you dig up the remaining fossils that seemed to have spawned up here and then lay down the five floor lights you got in. Happy that you’ve made a little progress, you take your fossils to the museum and have them analyzed, then take the bridge to the north and come full circle back to where you begin.

You sell the fossils for bells and then spend time fishing, picking up seashells, and catching bugs in order to pay off that darn staircase.

Documenting the Digital

Both aspects of this module have been largely affected by the coronavirus pandemic which led to a degree of problem solving in order to bypass the subsequential restrictions. With not being able to leave the house to continue with the intentions outlined in my proposal I took to using digital platforms to realise these ideas instead.

I am very grateful that I live in an era where this was a possibility. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to be completely segregated from the world and more importantly from loved ones. I understand how fortunate I am that I could finish off this semester remotely and although I have found it difficult, it has brought some ideas to my attention that I would not have considered otherwise.

In my proposal I stated that I would have liked to document my exhibition somehow for example as a video or a publication. The module guidelines state that the elements of practice in a professional context that we explore should inform our practice. There is a definite synergy evidenced in the creative outlets I have made this semester alongside the contextual pathways I have placed myself in to, but I wanted this documentation to serve as an end product of the semester.

Completing the module in a digital setting has led me to question ideas of reality and physicality. We live in a world of downloading and streaming, but what record is there of this digital age? Music is streamed from Spotify, films are available on Netflix, books can be downloaded on to Kindles, even art galleries can now be accessed virtually. There is no tactile physicality of anything any more. We subscribe, rent and license but our right to possession stops when the payment stops. When we do buy things they exist purely as data, the only tangibility it has is on the device you downloaded it on to.

I wonder how future generations will be able to reference anything that has happened from the beginning of the century to present day. If all the power for some reason got switched off tomorrow what would happen to the digital archive of events and experiences that have been documented on the internet. How would we listen to music and watch films if we have no access to streaming platforms? I do not have the answer to these questions but it is an interesting topic and worthwhile thinking about.

I plan to make a publication of the digital aspects of this module, if nothing else I want it as a record for myself as evidence of the time. The domain name I used for the ‘In Conversation’ exhibition will eventually be used for my future website. The feedback and thanks I received for my Collaborative COVID-19 Poem came in the form of Instagram story posts. These are highlights that exist on Instagram for 24 hours, after this they disappear forever. It would seem in the digital age that everything is instant and nothing is permanent. This is why I feel it is important that these ideas, thoughts, processes, and hard work are documented somehow in a physical sense before they disappear with no trace they even existed.

I am yet to make this publication but have begun collating screenshots and images that I would eventually like to make in to an artist’s book. This would serve as a document of both the completion of the module in the strange times we are all experiencing and as a record of an intangible cyber space. I have started to curate the screenshots on Pages documents in an attempt to form a logical yet aesthetic sequence but am unsure whether or not it would be more appropriate to show the screenshots in their unedited format (for example the images at the start of this post). At the moment this is a work in progress.

I have by no means exhausted the limitations of printmaking at home but the only method that I can think of to print this publication right now would be on the family’s digital printer. This would serve as an immediate resolve and create a consistent dialogue with the ideas of how easy and instant everything seems to be in the digital age, however I feel that my efforts from semester are worth more than the click of a ‘print’ button. I want to experience the physicality of the experience when printing and assembling the book. Therefore for the time being I will put my efforts in to gathering and appropriating source material and await a time where it is safe to enter the studios before I bring the digital world back in to the real world.
