Related to my tags on the Irish American reblog, how long have bastardized "Celtic" crosses been neo-Nazi symbols? I wasn't aware of this stupid use until I was an adult and my father was equally unaware until I learned about it, and in our Celtic (American) Pride we often used Celtic cross imagery in decor and accessories. Granted these usually did resemble actually woven/knotted crosses (which by no means meant they were authentic. At best a few came from local Celtic Pride fests–which as I said in those tags was plagued by Confederate and Nazi imagery), but most of them came from like JoAnn's or Michael's or Walmart whenever Saint Paddy's Day rolled around. That said, the woven pattern of a Celtic cross is a bitch to draw especially when you have yet to nurture or be nurtured in any art skills, so when my borderline-Gothic ass would doodle graveyards in my school notebooks I would often doodle simplified Celtic crosses as grave markers, which unfortunately just meant a simple cross with a simple circle in it, unfortunately reminiscent of the neo-Nazi symbol.

Me and my family were staunchly Indiana liberals (to be fair that wasn't that shocking in our democrat enclave city) and have only become more leftist as time goes on, so those who knew me well would know I didn't mean anything by it, but like I have to wonder/worry that those who didn't know me well (like most of my classmates. I was pretty lonely in high school) or people who would briefly visit my home or come across us while we were wearing Celtic pins that day or something came away with the wrong impression. I'm especially dismayed at the thought that the kids I knew to be actual neo-Nazis might thought I was one of them

For the record I left school in like twenty eleven and had been doodling graveyards for years and wearing Celtic imagery for even longer. I can't really find out when the "Celtic" cross became a dogwhistle

#Celtic cross #Celtic Pride #tbh when going to those fairs it was under the pretense of being (mostly) Scottish #it was all a farce my dad leaned into because he was adopted by a Scots-Appalachian man with a Scottish name going back to an actual clan #BUT i was never supposed to know he wasn't my biological grandfather (even tho it was pretty damned obvious)#so my dad played heavily on Scottish pride #that said we had Irish ancestry from other branches of the family so we indulged in Irish pride and imagery too #plus we just felt the knotted crosses were pretty and cool looking #anyway i/my dad did end up having more Irish genetics than Scottish pending our DNA tests #the Scottish is there but the Irish is more. especially in me because my bio maternal grandfather was also Irish Appalachian #(i have some Ulster Scots too but less so. which is more surprising because it's more common for 'Irish' Appalachians to be Ulster instead)#somewhat-Gothic because i usually aligned with goths in personality and depression but rarely wore black #i usually wore boys graphic tees with stupid sayings and memes on them #at least until the obscenely stupid dress code went into affect (search my blog for that if you're interested lol it's a saga)#i was lumped in with the goths for lack of better placement anyway but arguably i was more boy scene #my high school didn't really have cliques or anything strictly categorical so like goths would hang with 'preps' and such anyway #but i did have more commonality with Goths and most of my few friends were #anyway I'm losing the thread #rambling in the tags

amount of books you’ve read so far: 16!! and yes, ten of these indeed are graphic novels.

best book you’ve read so far in 2022: that’s a tough one... The Alice Network by Kate Quinn!! I wanted to give historical fiction a try and really enjoyed this one.

best sequel you’ve read so far in 2022: Heartstopper: Volume Two by Alice Oseman without a doubt. To be fair, all sequels I’ve read so far are from this series but it really worked so well for me. I’d already really liked the first volume but the second made me love the story and the characters.

new release you haven’t read yet, but want to: Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan... i don’t know... the Moon is very captivating and present in lots of aspects of my life *and* it has mythology and friends-to-lovers-to-enemies... how could I not?

most anticipated release for the second half of the year: you already know it’s the tpb of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King, Bilquis Evely and Mat Lopes.

biggest surprise favorite new author (debut or new to you): Jadzia Axelrod!! Not that she’s a new author but I got to read her work for the first time this year (with Galaxy and Alysia Yeoh) and I’m looking forward to reading more from her.

newest fictional crush: hmmm i’d say that nearly none of my fictional crushes are new but one of them has to be Kat from Galaxy: The Prettiest Star (by Jadzia Axelrod and Jess Taylor).

book that made you happy: I got to read last year’s DC Pride (2021) hc and it made me happy. yes, it’s not perfect and all but little me would’ve never imagined books like these being made, let alone reading them.

most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): the Hearstopper series maría lent me. (other than that, I hope it’ll be S:WoT).

what books do you need to read by the end of the year?: I have so many lol. Though I’d say I want to read them rather than “need to”. Let’s see... I definitely want to read Bir Gün Tek Başına by Vedat Türkali which is my mom’s favorite book that I’ve wanted to read forever. It’s a novel about Turkey before the 1960 military coup, focused on the situation of university students and the working class, that’s been sitting on my shelf and in the back of my mind for some time now.

THEE Guide to Not Being a Punk Poser

Hey, so if you're reading this, you may or may not be looking to get into the punk scene, and you also may or may not be at a total loss on where to start

Well fear not! I am here with this little introduction post on how to Not Be A Poser (title pending)

FIRST UP: The Ideals

When it comes to the ideals of alternative subcultures, this graphic by @theygender (hope the tag is ok, lmk if it isn't) is the best summary I've ever seen

And if you're like me, you're solidly on the line between punk and grunge, but leaning just a bit more punk. This is fine /gen

Punk is about community. Punk is about fighting for a better future. Punk is about doing no harm and taking no shit. Punk is about looking out for the underdog. If you don't embody these values then you're not punk. The ideology of Punk is, in my opinion, the most important part of the subculture

But if you've been doing your research you already knew that. Now let's get into what a lot of people call the fun stuff: the music and the fashion

SECOND: The Music

There are a Lot of different subgenres of punk music, the most famous being punk rock and folk punk. I subscribe more to punk rock because I really enjoy fast music

Bands to look for include: Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Pansy Division, Dog Park Dissidents, Cheap Perfume, Mommy Long Legs, Gang Green, The Germs, Rage Against the Machine, G.L.O.S.S., X-Ray Spex, The Cramps, Circle Jerks, Crass, Limp Wrist, and Pure Hell

Of course there's a lot more but those are some staples plus some of my personal favorites. You can find my personal punk playlist here

Overall the sound is Loud and it is Angry. There are many songs about killing cops and hating capitalism and it fucks. If you like funky basslines, sick ass drums, angry yelling, and shredding guitars this music is for you

PART THREE: The Fashion

Okay, okay, I had to save the quote unquote best for last. Imo the fashion of punk is the most diy out of almost any other subculture

Literally anything you can get your hands on can become fashion. Steal what you can, pick up shit off the side of the road, and if you can't/don't know how to do something get a friend in the scene to either teach you or commission them or something

Brands? The fuck is that, the only brands you need to know are Rit fabric dye, goodwill, etsy (sometimes), your local craft store, and a good spike maker (I don't deal with spikes currently so I have no good resources for them, so other punks feel free to chime in!)

Want cool metal shit? Take apart cans and turn them into spikes. Take a lighter apart and use those metal bits. Steal safety pins from walmart.

Want/need to sew something? Yarn and a tapestry needle if you can't get/don't want to use dental floss. When sewing patches do a straight stitch around followed by a hobo stitch around again and that shit will stay forever. Alternatively pin patches on with safety pins, this works pretty well in a pinch

Fabric paint is your best friend!!! Start with a white base layer and the colors will be much more vibrant. Don't think you have painting skills? Doesn't matter, you're punk and you have the audacity to wear whatever you make with pride

Invest in a leather jacket. I don't mean in terms of money, I got mine at goodwill for ten bucks. But it will change your life. I recommend getting two: one to keep plain and one to diy. Also flannels are good for diy and can also be made into vests for warm weather very easily.

Both of these flannels I decorated myself in a matter of hours. If I can do it, so can you

Also! When you cut the sleeves off of a flannel you can use the extra fabric to make diy pockets :3

PART FOUR: Community and Conclusion

So this is kind of my close out section lol

I'm not sure what kind of discord communities exist for true punk culture, so if anyone has one they wanna promote feel free

Do some research on local punk bands in your area, get your friends together and diy outfits for a concert, or just to wear. The world is your punk oyster, and as long as you or other people aren't getting hurt you can do whatever you want forever

Adult Fieldtrip

TW Graphic description follows.

The realtors office in our resort arranged for a tour of the local Yakima Nation fish hatchery. This hatchery is one of many dedicated to restoring salmon to the Columbia River Basin.

The tour was short but very interesting. We saw them collect roe and sperm from a few river caught adult male and female Chinook.

First the fish are killed by removing a gill which causes them to bleed out. Then they are checked for tags, weighed and measured and then the sperm/roe are collected. Lastly a fish pathologist collects a kidney sample for testing. The roe are fertilized immediately but quarantined pending results of the kidney biopsy performed by the University of Washington. The carcasses are frozen for a month to kill any pathogens before being pulverized and spread in the river to return their nutrients to the ecosystem.

From the ~400 adults collected, approx 1m eggs will be fertilized and -800k fry will be tagged and released the following Spring when they will make their way to the Pacific. Fortunate fish will mature in the ocean and smell their way back to this river in 3-4 years.

This is a very professional operation and the Cle Elum hatchery is a world class research facility.

This painting is dated to the early 19th century and echoes the view of Elizabeth as Sentimental Mother of the nation, something that Queen Victoria echoed in her own portraiture.

changed a bit the blog's graphic ( simple stuff, but i'm more satisfied now ), changed the avatar ( because it made me laugh ), rewrote the pinned post to which i added one of the comics' panel because that too made me laugh, and added one muse. pending is the tag list and at least rivers and clef's bios, but i'll write them in the next days, if i can. now i really need to either write something or draw.

Usually respond to the first ones but fall behind. I love any and all tho!! But when I do respond to a comment that accidentally sets off my brainrot I usually rant for an unhinged amount of word count. Sorry to those commenters. I love to run my mouth, see my too long answers here

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

If I go for sad I usually intentionally go for somewhat open ended; that said Hunminjeong'eum (my fic about the butterfly effect of conversation for Nam Seon Ho) is canon compliant to my country the new age and thus has an implied angsty ending. There's also the pending sad ending for my MLC series

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Definitely my Mr. Queen fix it series. My favorite of the bunch is all my life i’ve been waiting for a good time (let's ride) which is the least popular one of course. But I think that Soyong deserved her own proper happy ending away from the husband who despised her, so that's the happiest one to me.

Do you get hate on fics?

One person insisted I tag OOC which honestly cut deeper than it should have

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I wrote one pretty graphic smut piece, it is my second most popular work, and I think it is deeply unhot. Go figure

Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

My only crossover is my My Country the New Age and The King: Eternal Monarch reincarnation fic from the perspective of a side character squared remembering their past life amongst political intrigue aka lately I'm a nervous wreck (i only have two real friends) (24,023 words). As I wouldn't wish The King: Eternal Monarch on my worst enemy, it's unfortunately incomprehensible to many people of taste.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I'd be flattered if it happened honestly

Have you ever had a fic translated?

No I am far too unpopular for that

What's your all-time favorite ship?

Li Shiqing and Xiao Heyun from Reset! I love that they're couple that works better together than apart and that they're both mostly practical, very ordinary, and matter-of-factly devoted to each other by the end.

What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I have a Reset 2022 fic I need to finish, but I don't think it would have any readers and it's not on the brain so who knows if I'll find the time

What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm good at a funny, modern sort of voice with quirky character details. It's one of the many reasons I love my silly crossover fic- I think it's funny.

What are your writing weaknesses?

PACING AND PLOT. my white whale is that awful CQL fic that's by far the most popular thing I've written. Also probably culture I'm in a lot of fandoms where the culture is not my own and I'm sure I bungle it

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I do include non-English words sometimes, usually following the format of the subtitles I watched since that's how I experienced the work. In terms of full sentences, probably not.

First fandom you wrote for?

Self insert E/R fic that if anyone irl found I would need to flee the country. Except u my one tumblr irl crossover friend love u

Favorite fic you've written?

lately I'm a nervous wreck (i only have two real friends) by a wide margin. It's my second least popular work. It's my favorite thing I've every written writ large: I was working through some big feelings and philosophies when writing it that helped make me a better person. It's funny (to me). It's sort of dark. It has a cheesy Olivia Rodrigo lyric for the title. It centers a platonic relationship and has a bunch of carefully transcribed details from MCTNA, a show I love. I'm pretty sure literally no one else read the last chapter since I posted it a year after the others. I reread it regularly. I still find typos.
