A regular dueling club member and can hold their ground against a dark wizard long enough to overwhelm them to retreat (Ashwinder quest) and beat a 7th year (seriously Elliot its one thing to make yourself look strong against a horde of acromantula in front of a group of third years but you got your ass handed by one of said 3rd year)

For some reason knows how to sneak out of Hogwarts without anyone noticing???

Its more of an overlooked trivial footnote but I find it more funny if the MC can sneak out of the scotland countryside all the way to central london undetected and back in their first year (Erumpent Sidequest) but still needs a parent's permission and be a third year to go a village within walking distance from hogwarts

Has some insecurities due to them being a muggleborn

Feeling like they're a bit behind compared to their friends (Hermione Sidequest) Which is a bold faced lie considering they're constantly saving their friends asses from their shenanigans ahem daniel during the entire second year plot line ahem

[I had to spell Wishlist upside down to keep the alliteration going]

So, here's my first original post in quite a while. Apparently, the last one was a whole hundred followers ago - immense thanks to all 400 of you!!! And also, Tumblr informed me I got 1000 likes and kindly generated a picture for me to thank y'all for them with!

Given that's 2.5 likes per follower, I assume they mean 1000 likes just on my original posts, which would track considering most of my posts are additions, and liking all of those either counts towards that tally as just one like to my original post, or if you liked it through a reblog potentially nothing at all, because maybe likes to reblogs aren't counted even if they're reblogs of my own posts. But don't think I'm a numbers-chaser, this is just me wondering. Really, the only reason I even look at the activity chart of my blog is because I started trying to make that line as straight as possible for giggles (and then some of my posts blew up and ruined it, ecksdee). The thought of someone having enjoyed what I wrote has me smitten every time I see it, and I can barely even comprehend the idea that it happened a literal thousand times. I still can barely wrap my head around four hundred people all having decided they actively want to hear more from me. (Usually it's the opposite, har har.) I love all of you for it. The freaks, the puritans, the children (wait I just said that OOH GOTTEM), the adults, the uncomfortably weird, the hyper-organized users that use different blogs for each one of their passions, the hyper-random users that reblog my posts right after diaper fetish art. (And if you thought that was some whiplash, imagine the guy who followed a diaper fetish art blog getting shown me.)

But this is just me buying time, isn't it. Alright alright, let's talk about the wishlist, beginning with its premise.

This is not advice. This is not a list that makes sense at all, really - most of these items are way far down the list of things I'd do with the money they cost and/or the effort they'd take. This is a dream, where those aren't a factor. Just like some people's dream car is a ten million dollar hypercar that was built directly into the bodies of five Middle Eastern oil moguls, my dream car is a Miata with exactly these bits. (And a Seven, but I really need to stop confusing y'all with them being tied for the favorite car top spot.)

This list is based on a note I started in middle school for the fun of it (which is hopefully understood as the driving motive behind this all) and gradually updated through high school and sort of left behind after that, having kind of run out of bits to add to it. It's split into six sections:

Exterior

Interior (i.e. cabin, trunk and engine bay)

Drivetrain (i.e. anything that plays a role in making the wheels spin)

Chassis and suspension (i.e. chassis and everything that connects the wheels to it)

Electronics (i.e. electronics/microcontroller-related features)

Miscellaneous

This will be a chance for me to check the prices of all the things I listed and, at the end of it, tally up their total cost and feel feelings about its enormity. But of course, we'll need to start with a thing that was not in the note, as it was a given to me: the base car. So that will be the subject of my next addition to this post.

Because I can't make this a single post. Absolutely no chance. Even just any workaround to the image limit being about a fifth of the length of this list would be a nightmare for me to execute and for y'all to navigate. And frankly, the length of the task would make me, if not outright give up, at the very least skimp on the kind of explanations and discussions that I must assume are why you're all here. So I will need to make additions to this post (in the form of a reblog, of course) each going over one section at most. But truth be, even doing one reblog per section presents those problems, so some sections would need splitting in a number of parts. Or I could go to the other extreme and made one post per item (or when appropriate group of items), which would allow me to expand upon every which one as little or as much as appropriate while still keeping a tidy presentation. But to do this I would need to hide all the information bar the name under a Read More, because if I put as little as one picture before it by the time I'm at the end of the list every time this post appears in your dash you'll have to scroll past some hundred pictures to get to the bottom of it; also, of course, this would mean this post showing up in your dash upwards of a hundred times - though of course you could just ignore it a bunch of times and when you feel like it go through all the parts you've not read yet at once.

Right now I'm leaning towards the one post per item approach, which would allow me to work towards the completion of this abomination in small daily steps rather than in age-long parts which would also help addressing your other submissions. But it's very hard for me to figure out what y'all would prefer, as it's kind of hard for me to figure out who would actually want to read through the entirety of this. So, y'all are welcome to leave your feedback in the replies or through this non-binding format poll.

Port Out, Starboard Home by onawingandaswear (@whoacanada) [11.6k words | not rated] talk about realism, my god. you ever realize your boyfriend comes from a famous, prominent, totally-different-tax-bracket family? if not, this fic helps you experience what that feels like, and if so, you can relive that experience while reading this. .

live through this and you won't look back by nighimpossible [4.1k words | teen] a fic that perfectly encompasses the continual grief you feel when you think the boy you're in love with is straight. it's painfully good. and it also has a happy ending! .

Better With Time by foryouandbits (@foryouandbits) [118.5k words | mature] now i know this is a high school au, which can be polarizing depending on the person, but frankly i haven't read another fic that better captures bitty's relationship with his father. i mean, i cried more than once when i first read this, both happy tears and i-relate-a-bit-too-hard tears. .

Star Trek TOS' wrongs

So I said I'd do it so I'm doing it. This is just a handful of, honestly, insulting details of the original trek. Now, TOS is still my favorite trek, but it is outdated. You, frankly need to remove significant parts of canon to cope with this in a modern day mindset. Which is why I find it so hilarious that people are so precious about star trek canon. This, like comic books, is the last thing you should be taking literally.

A brief list of outdated trek:

Established in Turnabout Intruder, Woman are not permitted to be Starfleet Captains

Takes place in Elaan of Troyius, in Kirk's attempt to coach Elaan into being more "womanly" he threatens to spank her. (Also possibly Kirk is raped with Elaan's magical pheromone tears?? Which is not acknowledged as rape. I have to fact check this one.)

Takes place in The Enemy Within, Janice Rand is presumably raped and then interrogated by her rapist. The rapist is Kirk (the barbic side)

Established in Amok Time, T'Pring is considered property to either Spock, Stonn, or Kirk, going to the winner to a battle to the death.

Takes place in Bread and Circuses, showing a civilization influenced by ancient Rome. The episode ends with a group of people worshiping the son of god… alluding to Christianity.

Takes place in Omega Glory, Enterprise encounters a planet where the "Kohms" and the "Yangs" are in conflict. We learn these terms actually refer to "Communist", and "Yankee", respectively. The episode ends with Kirk reading straight out of the Pledge of Allegiance that is identical to Earth's. Somehow this planet has developed… exactly to earth to a point...

The countless amount of planets that developed parallel to earth, ie: the Nazi planet, the gangster planet, the cold war planet, native american planet, SO many greek gods, jesus fucking christ (literally), cowboy planet??, space hippies, Halloween planet... sigh, the one with goddamn Lincoln...

TOS' general treatment of women, especially seen in: Mudd's Women, Metamorphosis, Wolf in the Fold. And sprinkled in all the rest TOS.

And many more… I'll possibly add more to this post later since I'm planning a full rewatch. But if anyone has some glaring additions, feel free to add! (Ideally with the episode in question)

In conclusion, forget your canon! For the love of god! If you don't like SNW, don't watch it! It didn't happen! If you don't like a particular episode, banish it from your mind! What? Are you writing character metas or something? Pray tell, how? And good luck.

And yes, stop bothering people who enjoy a series with your criticisms. Fans and writers do not have to adhere to your particular perception of a character. We are given only glimpses into how these characters work. They're tools for self expression, not real people.

At some point, you'll want to choose what you're going to be. A person who creates and uplifts? Or someone who can only destroy, and rage at the unfairness of the world. And for that, I say good luck as well.

Leaving Your Mark On A Genre: The Lost Artisans of Vocaloid

If you've been around me for more than 5 seconds you're aware that I am an avid enjoyer of Project Diva games. Learning this week about every single producer who was associated with the music that has passed has made it extremely difficult to play. I keep missing buttons in every song I play because I'll suddenly remember I'm playing a song by wowaka, or while scrolling past samfree in the menu have a moment of sadness that doesn't clear up.

There's been a strange sense of melancholy playing certain songs. Even before this research project and learning about the people who had passed just watching the Viva Happy PV or Odds & Ends left me strangely.. empty feeling.

I didn't know about any of these producers passing on. I work in news media and frankly I don't go looking for news when off the clock because it's a job that sucks the soul out of you. When I'm home I'm content to enjoy things as they are. Imagine my surprise to see a tweet of unrelated context alluding to wowaka's passing. How insane it was to me to learn of this. Moments later after commenting such I'd learned of Samfree, and Powapowa-P. This is only 6 of 40 listed on the VocaDB under deceased. Please add to this if you have anything else to share about any of these producers or others you know of. I'd love to hear more. What was special about their music to you?

Perhaps others are like me and don't know of these passings. Maybe you've played a Vocaloid game, but the names are unfamiliar. Or, you just know the songs by cover-artists. I'd never done any digging on these people, but I've been melancholy. I wanted to know more about who they were.

As an aside before the cut-- this is expanded from an X thread I started. Less space on X to work with, and less comfort using Blue expansion. If you see anything blatantly copied from X, it's probably from here.

As stated above; any others whom I may have missed (I don't have the most vast knowledge about this subject) I humbly invite others to include. I welcome additions. In 2012 he joined GINGA; performed live performances and was extremely popular on a worldwide stage. He was beloved on Niconico for his compositions as well as the arrangements and lyrics in many songs self-produced. He was also talented with the piano, and utilized this skill for quite a few songs and albums Today on TikTok, Young Girl A is still getting a massive number of views and features in videos as backing. The song features strong themes of depression and unhappy mentality. It's themes are shared by "Alive" which ranked #1 in 30 different countries on Apple music.

He mostly used Miku & Rin for Vocalsynth, with many, many album releases-- including Best-Of tracks.

You know who samfree is if you've ever picked up a Vocaloid game. The picture may not be familiar. The name may not jar your memory, but the music will.

His songs were hits from conception. On this list he is one of the most well known just from his notoriety. He was more than just a Vocaloid composer. He was also an Utaite himself, being in "Nanario no Nico Nico Douga" and prompting a flood of response. He released 6 albums himself between 2008-2011.

His songs have been in more than just Vocaloid though, having credit in "The Sound of SEINS;GATE Complete" from March of 2016 as the arranger, "TOHO Eurobeat" Volumes 1, 3, and 4. As well as "The Best Of Non-Stop TOHO Eurobeat 2011" and "The Revival Mix 2" (TOHO Eurobeat) albums as a mix of an arranger and lyricist.

His significant works in the Vocaloid franchise include:

Producers released the "Pandoras Box" album after their passing-- including songs that had final touches placed post-mortem so that those who enjoyed their work could enjoy everything they had to offer. There is very, very little about Otsu-P available. That's okay. If you have anything to share, or any kind of memory you'd like to include-- please do.

wowaka (ヲワカ)/Genjitsutouhi-P (現実逃避P)

This is the hardest one to cover for me. It's very strange. For a while now SPiCA has made me very, very sad. I wasn't sure why. I didn't know about wowaka until this week. The song isn't meant to be sad at all. The musical undertone though leaves me feeling empty. Now I can't even play the song. It really did leave a deep mark. Even choosing a picture, I went through about 20 of them, just to find one where he looked content.

Wowaka heard about Vocaloid after hearing "Last Night, Good Night," enjoying and being shocked by the ability of the program-- as well as the ability of a single user to do so much production. Debuting in 2009 and exploding soon after, wowaka formed the band "hitorie" in 2011, establishing BALLOOM. Under the BALOOM umbrella, artists would be able to publish music worldwide.. from the internet. Following this "Rolling Girl" saw an international release.

In 2011 after this release, wowaka worked mostly with his band and label instead of the Vocaloid software. During this time he'd composed and worked on the lyrics for "And I'm Home," featured as the ending theme song of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The type to stay busy, he'd always had a project. Eventually he would be back with a bang in 2017, releasing the Vocaloid track: "Unknown Mother-Goose."

Not only did he get used to the software though, he was personal with the developers. Wowaka was friends with Hachi (Yonezu Kenshi) at one point describing their relationship as "close."

The associations list for wowaka are almost endless. From Toku, Oster Project and onward. If you look at any Project Diva game or best-of discography for Vocaloid you will see at least one wowaka song. If you play the games you know of his songs as almost always being the ones to get you stuck for a bit on the harder difficulties. They're so catchy that no one seems to mind.

Unlike the others on this list; Brother-P was not a musician, and a bit more recent. His specialization was the animations associated with some of our favorite songs. It's likely you've seen at least one of them, with Sony having his work included in a DVD release for Vocaloid content.

A few of these Music Video compilations have been released over the years, with many making it to Youtube. With inclusion of 2DMV's, his work has been included in everything from DVD to Video Games. Modders especially have used his content in Megamix+ to bring life to songs.

Like wowaka, I've had a deep feeling of sadness when playing certain songs. Namely Viva Happy and Odds & Ends. Today actually, I had to pause playing Odds & Ends. (using the Brother-P MV actually.) Before I had learned of this information this had happened with me sitting at my desk feeling oddly empty. That's when I had started working on this, as I felt like I had to work on something important to me. It lead me to this information. I feel strange about it. Especially with how odd the timing is. But, It shows how deeply the PV's do make a difference.

Already popular before working with Vocaloid2, SHIKI crossed over into composing and arrangement on the new platform with Harmonia in 2008. It only took two songs for him to grab attention. You'll find him on the 2010 Sony DVD ~memories~, as well as the September 2010 Exit Tunes Presents Vocaloanthems album.

SHIKI lead and worked with a Visual Rock group "GILDA" until his departure in 2016. Before this he worked with Be-Music Source files (BMS) form 2002 until his passing in 2021. His legacy includes tracks for DJMAX, Sega's maimai, and オンゲキ series, and Albums for any kind of enjoyment type. He really was prolific.

HIs credits also included Lapis, Air, Ruby, and Setsuna. Love went into his creations at every step and it showed.

So, with all due respect.. I did find the deceased page while re-checking things. I did look at it. It's much longer than I originally thought it would be. Again, I implore others to add to this. Make it a more hospitable group to be a part of.

The thing is, I see Nami as a lesbian, and there's only one woman I can maaaybe envision Zoro with (Kiku), BUT I could be on board with that in the context of the East Blue polycule (Luffy/Zoro/Nami/Usopp/Sanji), as I've seen done in a good fic I've read (they were not the focus there, but still). How much of that and of the individual relationships within it would be romantic and/or sexual is something that is up to interpretation, but I totally can see the og five Straw Hats having a kind of significant relationship that eludes definition. The definition in case of Nami and Zoro specifically would probably be "queerplatonic", but, again, up to interpretation, to each their own.

These two have some amazing shared scenes in manga (I don't want to spoil in case you read it and/or watch the anime, but I'll say that the story arcs during which the scenes I have in mind happen are Thriller Bark and Wano), and I enjoy their bickering in the live action, but... doesn't compel me. I see why people ship them, but it's not the kind of ship that tends to pique my interest. Besides, while I love them because I love all Straw Hats (well, I definitely love Zoro, my feelings towards Sanji are Too Complex to Be Summed up on a Hat. I love live action!Sanji so far, though), if I had to rank all Straw Hats according to my preference, the two of them would be at the bottom of the list, so there's also that.

Oh, and I marked "add another guy" because in my head Luffy would be somewhere in this relationship even if not technically in it. Because both of them love him such a normal amount.

I've never considered such a pairing from that angle before, and I don't think I could get really invested in them because I frankly don't care that much about Georgina, but I'd love to read something exploring that dynamic just to see how it can work. Just like in case of many other Sugar Bowl Generation character combinations, why the hell not? :)

Hi there, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already or if this is the right place to drop some quick feedback, but it would be nice if we as a reader had more say in how our MC feels towards certain people or situations? For example, if MC decides to kill Rohan, they end up seeking Joia's forgiveness. It would be cool if there was the option to not try to comfort her, for more cold-blooded MCs. On the other hand, during MC's check-up on Scythe's ship, they end up being hostile to the doctor and are said to dislike physical touch. Maybe this is the result of my choices, but it'd be great if we could have a touch-averse and a touch-starved (or just a 'normal') option, as I don't imagine my MC to be either mean or touch-averse, and it kind of ruins the immersion for me. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way, and I don't mean to sound rude or overly critical! I just thought I could let you know how I felt about this certain aspect of the game, as it's incredible apart from this! Have a lovely day & sorry for the rant :)

no need to apologise! I like hearing your opinions, especially in cases like this. I think it's important to have these conversations :-)

as general response, I do agree that there are places where the game feels railroady - obviously, the operative is a set MC, but that doesn't mean you all shouldn't or don't get choices about your characters, and while I do try to build them in such a way that their responses feel natural and account for personality variation, there will inevitably be times I'm not able to do that. I can't account for everything, and in the interest of putting out chapters in a (somewhat) timely manner, there are definitely times I omit choices or scenes.

I'd like to include more choices regarding the operative's opinions on scytha. currently, you don't get much of a choice about that; you pretty much don't get to trust them, and that's something I'd really like to explore - the emotional impact of really buying into the company's ethos, toeing the party line, and still having them turn on you.

I'd also like to explore more relationship options to do with Joia. this is obviously a sensitive subject, and frankly, an entirely cold-blooded operative would just have left her where they found her - leaving her behind will never be an option, and that entails a certain degree of humanity, regardless of your operative's personality. still, I'd like there to be choices to explore slightly darker aspects of that relationship. suddenly finding yourself with this level of responsibility, a dependent you never asked for or wanted, can definitely lead to resentment and negative feelings, which I'd really like players to be able to explore in their operatives.

that being said: you will never have choices to be cruel towards or neglectful of joia. these are complex relationships and that entails difficult emotions, but a significant feature of the game is the way joia forces the operative to face their own humanity: they are, much as they might try to pretend otherwise, a person capable of compassion and empathy, and of healing.

to address the other example - the scene with maccready is less about the operative's degree of touch-aversion (for which there is minor variation) and much more to do with their history of forced medical procedures. they've had their body modified by scytha, for scytha's purposes, with limited consent and major ramifications. they're injured, and maccready is a stranger, and lance has already put them on edge; you don't need to be touch averse to be jumpy, in that situation.

i hope this doesn't come across like I'm dismissing your criticisms! as i said above, there's a lot of stuff I'd really like to add, but in the interests of putting out chapters with any kind of frequency (and advancing the plot), certain things have to be shelved. this is, after all, a first draft - I do have an ongoing list of things I want to add in a hypothetical second draft of the game, that are simply beyond my current scope.

news about the US is something that is honestly unavoidable if you follow any news at all. there's always something in the papers and on the radio (yes I'm an old lady and listen to radio news lmao). it's natural, because the US is such a big thing worldwide, but sometimes I admit it gets a bit tiring when it's everywhere.

I don't know what the average Finn thinks about the US, really. there's a lot of people who think it's amazing there's less taxes and more personal freedom and how "anyone can get rich!" there while in Finland the taxes effectively make becoming a millionaire a lot harder lol. there's a lot of people who do think the US is great. but there's also a lot of people who think that the US is an appalling example of a democracy and that it's actually scary how shitty things are for minorities and such. and Trump gets a lot of ridicule. he's a big joke, mostly.

OOOOOOOH my goodness this question is making my brain buzz in all the right ways!!!!! So, actually~~~ I often end up making separate playlists for basically every single thing I write! And this is mainly due to me liking... and I guess sort of needing to go full immersion mode; I find that if I am listening to something that is 'on theme', then in my mind I feel like I am constructing a movie scene, with the actors, the setting, the soundtrack... And the lyrics actually sometimes help to introduce a new perspective on the story for me, or at least let me consider and question what the palette of emotions are that correspond to it and the characters within. So, overall for me music is almost like a collaborator that helps me with imagining worlds, channeling feelings and understanding a given genre or member (if you have anything/anyone in particular in mind just hit me up music+ideating is basically my obsession lol)

In terms of music preferences... I cannot say I have any specific ones, though there are certain genres that I simply gravitate to (ofc kpop lol), like r&b, indie and jazz here and there; also melodic rap, and stuff like bedroom/trance pop; and I am something of a constant 'new sound' seeker so do quite a bit of creeping for new releases and things I have never heard just to check it out and see if it vibes~

Trans Omo- STP Edition - Part 2

This part is all about getting your first STP, trying to learn how to use it.

Frankly, this is probably the thing most people talk about, which admittedly is still very little I think. Most people will just say that it requires practice and that it creates a mess.

They are not wrong, but obviously, that barely touches it.

Anyway here's a little list of things/prompts related to first STP usage:

First of all, the actual getting it, it arriving after waiting for it. There's a certain excitement to trying it for the first time. The thing is in order to be able to use an STP you kinda do need a filled bladder. So provided you know the order is coming that day you might hold it in so you can try it immediately.

Then it might be good to point out that you're supposed to wash STPs before first use, when already with a bursting bladder that might be fun

Furthermore trying to figure out positioning when first using an STP is a nightmare and daunting, not a fun thing to be doing while desperate and definitely not something I'd advise.

An STP is a tricky thing, positioning is definitely difficult first. Especially if you never spend time figuring out where your urethra is first, messes will be made. There's a reason it's advised to first practice naked in the shower.

Something I never hear anyone talk about is the fact that it feels unatural to pee in a cup like that while standing in the shower. I don't have a shy bladder normally, but with an STP it's a different story. Definitely took a lot of mental power the first couple of times and still sometimes.

More on that I definitely realised it's easier to try using the STP while needing to go more than just slightly. Just not quite desperate but not empty. But there's a balancing act to.

One very important thing with STPs is that you have to be careful not to overflow it, if you pee more than into the cup than can go out you'll end up with wet pants. Most STP requires you to control your flow so you can't go full force. It can be hard to find the balance in that.

And don't get me started on using an STP while desperate, I think I already wrote a post about that but being desperate while having to control your flow is one of the most deliciously torturous experiences ever.

Another thing never mentioned is the moving from nakedness to using an STP while wearing clothes. It's more awkward, less manoeuvre room so it might be harder to position it correctly. I've definitely made some mess of my clothes while trying to move up. Also, some trousers are more suitable than others. Also trying to keep the waistband out of the way might mean more things that the same time.

Also might be interesting to mention that having roommates while trying to figure out how to STP might add some complications, especially when you have a shared shower. Or yk having to do laundry because your moving to STP with clothes didn't go perfectly. (Admittedly this is a problem with wetting in general)

As this is technically based on an existing IP with characters belonging to other people, simply posting online would be enough. My issue with this one is the central plot feels awkward, but it's too interwoven to remove it. Also, it needs heavy editing.

Write-up/ Novelization of D&D adventures (Fighting Fantasy World of Titan)

I want to get these professionally bound for my friends (and maybe posted online too). This lot is a huge challenge - there's over 15 years worth of D&D notes that I want to write up as a novelization, but my notes are sparse, scattered, or generally incomplete. They're also told in a jumble of formats that need deciphering. I'd also want to try and consolidate things like travel time & distance, iron out plot wrinkles and nip & tuck any loose threads or plot holes.

Posting this one online. I underestimated the size of it, TBH, and it turned from a cute fun idea to a potential entire recharacterization of a main NPC, which is frankly incredibly daunting.

Post online. This is my glorified list of headcanons. It was supposed to be short! And it grew unwieldy and I ran out of steam. I might go back to this one and see if I can finish it off at least, now I've got a bit more experience with the fictional-non-fiction style.

It's been a few weeks since I finished the Acerola Jam 0 (check out the jam if you haven't, there's a lot of cool games!) and I've had a bit of time to decompress and think about my experience. I also was literally unable to do this until this week so hahaaaaa.

A Summary

This was a good experience and has given me a good bit to think on for the other game. Which is both good and bad: part of the reason why progress has seemingly stopped is because of this. I've been working on stuff behind the scenes and polishing up bits (and rethinking others) to show off later.

I'm happy I was able to release a project that people could, you know, play. From start to finish, with very few bugs that soft-locked or broke the game. People found it fun too, which was a plus.

However, there's a few things that were problems and I'm unhappy with:

The game is confusing to play without any guidance; there wasn't obvious enough signposting or tutorials, which meant I had to tell people how to play (this is not a good sign).

The balance isn't great: some rooms are too hard. Others are too easy. Some powerups just suck, others are too good.

The boss doesn't take advantage of the core gimmick.

The presentation is lacking.

The last one is the thing that stings the most.

The Problem Of Visibility

In the three weeks the game has been around in the jam, my game was viewed 52 times, downloaded 19 times and rated 4 times. I posted it a few times and passed it around my friends. Around 6 of those downloads were from my friends. These are, by all means, not bad numbers. Someone on the Acerola discord found that the mean number of ratings is around 4 - so I'm perfectly average.

Part of this is just due to there being over 900 entries. Part of it is luck. A lot of it is because the game fundamentally doesn't catch your eye. My visual competency is, well

The biggest problem, I feel, boils down to marketing. Let's list a few problems with Gunmatic.

The game looks like a flash game made in 2008. This isn't bad but there's a stigma against those games.

The thumbnail does an awful job at describing the game and getting people to click.

The screenshots are confusing without context and frankly, suck.

The title sucks.

Part of this is just my own general competency. I am not a good artist by any means. This is something I struggle with constantly - I can, at best, make nice-ish looking animations and use some basic tricks to make it look a bit smoother. You can see this in a lot of my other clips. I also suck at names (honestly, my other game has some awful names...).

Focusing on GA, I could've done a few things better here. The easiest ones here are, add a gif to the screenshots and make a better thumbnail. I've done a quick mockup below of what that could look like (note i spent like 5 minutes on this). I could've used the gif in this very post on my screenshots screen too.

Getting People To Play

The second hurdle was actually getting people to play the game. It's one thing to get people to click, but how do you get people to actually play it?

I had a click-to-download ratio of about 3:1. That's, all things considered, not that bad! However, getting people to actually download your game, in a game jam with 958 entries, is difficult. Why play this flash game you need to download when you can play MEGA CHESS, which looks like a Real Game that you can play in your browser?

It probably would've been smarter if I'd just exported this to HTML5 and embedded it into the browser. This would've reduced the hurdle to play significantly: a lot of the most popular games in the game jam were, expectedly, browser games. And games Acerola had boosted (hint hint haha jk unless..........?).

Playtesting

This relates to my other issue: a lack of playtesting. by people who weren't me, i mean.

This is probably one of the hardest problems I've faced - both here and in my actual game. Unless you have friends who are into game development, it's hard to get someone to sit down, play your game, and give you their thoughts on what works and what doesn't. It's a fairly significant ask of someone! They have to play it for a bit, understand how it works, suffer through any problems, and then formulate their thoughts.

I developed Gunmatic Aberration over 2 weeks while working full time. I had a lot of dead time to fill in those two weeks - I should have been bugging my friends for their opinions and telling me what sucked and what didn't.

I didn't do that often.

This, above everything else, is what hurt the game the most. The game is fun, but it's incredibly unpolished and has more potential than anything else. The randomness of the game hurts it (it's a roguelite, after all): you can effectively just Die if you get a difficult room without the right powerups. It's difficult to figure out how to play without explicit instruction. These are all problems born from the developer being the only person to play it.

This is slightly just anecdotal, but I believe the top games in the Game Jam are both made by exceptionally talented people who also had some people giving them feedback. Maybe some more than others - but there was a conversation that I didn't have until the last few days.
