The gut microbiome plays a significant role in the immune system’s tolerance of potential food allergens, such as milk or peanuts. Research has shown that certain bacteria can protect against food allergies by preventing antigens from entering the bloodstream.
Now, researchers have created a special type of polymeric molecule to deliver a crucial metabolite produced by these bacteria directly to the gut, where it helps restore the intestinal lining and allows the beneficial bacteria to flourish.
The research demonstrates that these polymers, called micelles, can be designed to release a payload of butyrate, a molecule that is known to help prevent food allergies, directly in the small and large intestines.
When given to mice, these micelles increased the abundance of butyrate-producing Clostridia bacteria, protected the mice from an anaphylactic reaction to peanuts, and reduced the severity of symptoms in a model of ulcerative colitis.
The micelle technology can be adapted to deliver other metabolites and molecules, making it a potential platform for treating other allergies and inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases.

me and my partner are thinking about rehoming one of our dogs because we don't have the money or energy to take care of such a big dog with medical and health issues, esp not since we're about to be living out of our van once we get everything settled and figured out. I'm a little bit sad about it but its not fair to him that we can't afford to take care of him or take him to the vet and its not fair to him that we don't have the kind of energy to meet his enrichment needs either

I wonder what the world would be like if everyone grew their own food…
I’ve always been perplexed over the food industry. We mass produce and contribute to mass waste, upwards of 29% of greenhouse gases are caused by agriculture and 1/3 of all food is either lost or wasted. This remains one of the largest contributors to global warming which is directly linked to deadly heatwaves and devastating rise in sea levels resulting in catastrophic flooding, tsunamis and human fatality.
When I was a teenager I discovered I was getting sick from eating meat - not from the animal itself but the antibiotics it was being fed to combat infectious diseases and expedite growth rate and efficiency. I started researching organizations like peta who’s demonstrations were quite aggressive and perhaps even off- putting. I’ll never forget the images I saw in some of their videos where chickens were being fed so many antibiotics and caged so close together that some didn’t even grow beaks before slaughter, Farmers kicking cattle down the conveyer belt, sadistically getting off on harming animals, among other horrors. I find global warming articles usually lead with fear mongering of food scarcity but don’t place enough emphasis on food waste. We waste about 35 million metric tonnes of food each year in Canada alone. Organics wasted in a landfill produce methane gas which is 25 times more damaging to the environment than carbon monoxide and the rest of the food waste equates to 56.6 million tonnes of carbon monoxide equivalent emissions. It’s also thought that approximately 11 million tonnes of this food could be rescued and distributed amongst vulnerable communities … but is it?
I’ve pondered the concept of “The Business of Food “ and it’s never made much sense to me. In my late teens I would go visit a friend who had a job working for Tim Hortons - one of Canadas leading coffee chains- at the end of her shift we would sneak out the donuts in a plastic bag that she was ordered to destroy. It was made very clear to her that the bag was to be thrown in the dumpster to not attract the homeless and we defied them and left it beside the dumpster. It’s something I still do to this day - if it’s edible or recyclable then I leave it beside and at least give the person dignity should they be hungry or willing to take my bottles back for the deposit. It’s the very least I can do. Globally we waste 930 million tonnes which becomes 3.3 billion tonnes of emissions. food waste contributors are primarily in the household at 61% followed by 26 % food service and 13% retail. The average Canadian wastes upwards of two grand a year on groceries they just throw out.
On top of that we practically give away garbage food while overcharging for organic food. This means if you live in poverty you’re more or less forced to eat “ foods” which are highly processed and contain saturated and trans fats, refined sugars and high levels of sodium.
Medically it’s recommended that a women has no more than 6 teaspoons or 100 calories of sugar per day and 1500 milligrams of sodium to sustain optimal heart health. The average American consumes around 3600 milligrams of sodium and 22 teaspoons of daily sugar. Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death in North America to this day.
On average the cost of organic foods is anywhere from a 20-80% increase due to shorter self life but what is the cost to grow it yourself I wonder?
What’s the markup for when a large portion of those foods aren’t even technically “organic”
Food labels are not regulated properly in North America. It’s said that somewhere around 73% of our generation prefers to shop organic and big corp calls it a “ lifestyle choice”
Should we pay more to have non genetically modified food free of all pesticides? Gmo means that a food sources DNA has been altered to create a desired effect typically in appearance. While this science can bring added nutrients to your beloved food - it also creates issues with allergens and drives our antibiotic resistance rates up higher.
This means that eventually things like pneumonia , strep throat and infections associated with minor burns will become untreatable.
Let’s take away the word “ choice” from our lifestyles and look at foods that are medically necessary such as gluten free foods for those with celiacs - an autoimmune disease. The cost of that food is about 242% higher when compared to the cost of regular food. Living on a limited income means accepting that you’ll be sick because you can’t afford not to be. 242% is the lowest average - it can be anywhere from 212-1000% increase. It means on average that a regular household could spend around 5k while someone with celiac will pay 12k. How does that make sense?
As I was writing this my 3 year old niece woke up from her nap and said she was hungry. I grabbed no sugar added chocolate pudding and sat down to join her. I haven’t been able to eat solids in three days with norovirus. She took a bite and said ew - it has no flavour …. This is how easily we get hooked on garbage even at three. It’s marketed to us constantly despite the fact that it causes obesity …. Which causes: stroke, osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes , coronary heart disease, sleep apnea, gallbladder disease, high blood pressure, inflammation, fatty liver disease, and various cancers . It would be like watching adverts for people selling crack to children except it’s big corporations like Coca Cola and nestle selling us food crack.
Make it make sense
That probably sounds crazy to say … speaking of crazy , processed foods and refined sugars are directly linked to depression and even cellular aging- one can of soda a day will shave about 5 years off your life expectancy. It will also increase your chances of kidney disease, negatively affect your dental health, increase risk of developing gout and accelerate cognitive decline.
We are literally dying to eat.
I feel hungry for change
They say you are what you eat
… I guess we’re all sick

i actually do kinda like delivering groceries on the side because it gives me such a unique cross-section of the community. i never know whose groceries im shopping for until i finish the delivery and see them/their home and it's like it adds more detail to the picture of who they are. the baby supplies going to the apartment that i know for a fact is one bedroom (they'll be moving soon - i bet they're apartment hunting, i hope they find a place). the new cat litter box, bowl, and kitten food going to the house covered in "i <3 my dog" paraphernalia (a kitten definitely showed up on the porch recently and made itself at home). the fairly healthy boring grocery order that includes an incongruous tub of candy-filled ice cream going to the home of an elderly woman with toddler toys in the yard (it's clearly for her grandkids, whom she sees often).
shopping for someone else's groceries is a fairly intimate thing. i've bought condoms and pregnancy tests, allergy medicine and nyquil, baby benadryl and teething gel, a huge pile of veggies paired with an equally huge pile of junk food, tampons and shampoo and closet organizers and ant traps and deodorizing shoe inserts and a million other little things that tell a million different stories in their endless combinations. one time someone had me buy one single green bean. i messaged them to confirm that's actually what they wanted, and they said yes - neither of them liked green beans very much, but they had a baby they were introducing to solid foods, and they wanted to let him try one to see if he liked them. another time i had someone request 50 fresh roma tomatoes - not for a restaurant, but for a person in an apartment. the kitchen behind them smelled like basil and garlic when they opened the door. another time i brought groceries to three elderly blind women who share a house. that was one of the few times i have ever broken my rule and gone inside a place i've delivered to, because they asked if i could place the grocery bags in a specific location in the kitchen for them to work on unloading and there was no way i was going to refuse helping.
i gripe about the poor tippers, but people can also be incredibly kind. one time i took shelter from a sudden vicious hailstorm inside an older lady's home in a trailer park, while i was in the middle of delivering her groceries. we both huddled just inside the door, watching in shock as golf-ball-sized hail swept through for about five minutes and then disappeared. she handed me an extra $10 bill on my way out the door.
when covid was at its deadliest, people would leave extra (often lysol-scented) cash tips and thank-you notes for me taped to the door or partially under the mat. i especially loved the clearly kid-drawn thank you notes with marker renderings of blobby people in masks, or trees, or rainbows. in summer of 2020 i delivered to a nice older couple who lived outside of town in the hills, and they insisted i take a huge double handful of extra disposable gloves and masks to wear while shopping - those were hard to find in stores at the time, but they wanted me to have some of their supply and wouldn't take no for an answer.
anyway. all this to say people are mostly good, or at least trying to be, despite my complaints.

When "Just a Little" Can Be Life-Threatening: Understanding Allergies
Daily writing promptWhat’s something most people don’t understand?View all responses Let’s talk allergies. Not the sniffles-and-sneezes kind (although those are no fun, either!), but the serious, life-threatening kind. You know, the ones where exposure can trigger anaphylaxis or SJS – Stevens-Johnson Syndrome or TEN – Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (in my case, I have had – on different occasions…

Food Allergy Market - Emerging Therapies, And Understanding the Market Barriers and Future Scope
Food Allergy is an Immune System reaction that usually occurs on eating any specific food. The reaction to Food Allergy can be mild, but for some people, it can become deadly, and the Food Allergy Symptoms vary from person to person. Food Allergy market insights provides more in-depth details about the Food Allergy market and all the ongoing developments and will evaluate the Upcoming drugs in the Pipeline for Food Allergy Treatment. There are many common Food Allergies that can be seen among people, but Food Allergy Clinical Trials are way ahead to be launched in a functional way still, there is no promised diagnosis for Food Allergy Testing.
PALFORZIA, is the only marketed and the first FDA-approved food allergy treatment, which was developed by Aimmune and bought up by Nestle in October 2020, and was approved as Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) on January 31, 2020. FDA approved it as mitigation for allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, that occurs due to the accidental peanut exposure for patients aged 4 to 17 years, with a confirmed diagnosis of peanut allergy.
Emerging Therapies for the Food Allergy Treatment-
There are many companies working on the development of Food Allergy Therapies and many emerging Food Allergy Pipeline drugs are in various clinical phases like- Aimmune Therapeutics, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, DBV Technologies, InnoUp Farma S.L., COUR Pharmaceutical Development Company Inc., Vedanta Biosciences, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Genentech, Rho Federal Systems Division, Inc., Alladapt Immunotherapeutics,Inc., Camallergy, and others are currently involved in the development of various food allergy drugs.
Many companies are still developing therapies for the Food Allergy treatment and are in different phases of the clinical trails, such as NIAID)/Genentech, Novartis, Camallergy, Vedanta Biosciences, Alladapt Immunotherapeutics, InnoUp Pharma, COUR Pharmaceuticals, and others.
Expected Roadblocks for the Food Allergy Treatment-
From the past decades, diagnostic research and development have led to a better understanding of the Food Allergy conditions. However, there are still many factors that are affecting the growth of the Food Allergy treatment market. Due to the lack of understanding of the mechanism of the Food Allergy, it is often diagnosed by relating it to other Food Allergies or diseases. And the prevalence of food allergies is further underestimated due to different symptoms observed in the different people for the same food allergy, and the unwillingness of people to disclose the symptoms they feel over any certain food allergy makes the diagnosis of the food allergy more complicated.
Way ahead to a better Food Allergy Treatment-
Due to many barriers, researchers are continuously trying to find a proper treatment for the Common Food Allergies. Food Allergy testing has still to pass many underlying barriers from the society, where people are seeking a preventive rather than a curative therapy treatment. Increasing patient awareness about the Food Allergies, continuous development in the Food Allergy Pipeline and more improved diagnostics will drive the Food Allergy Treatment market in the future ahead.
