Trigun fucking destroys me, okay.

It's about persisting through the most horrific obstacles imaginable, and never losing hope for yourself and others. It's about the fruit your efforts bear, but it doesn't ignore the ugliness of the suffering you endure. It doesn't sweep it under the rug to give you a happy ending.

As a jaded millennial, I get a bit tired of stories where everything turns out fine because the heroes tried hard. Most stories gloss over the repercussions of failure. They tell us it's all simply a means to an end, and that end is what matters. Overcoming your obstacle matters. Winning matters.

Trigun doesn't do this.

Vash gets hurt (gross understatement). He's ostracized, bullied, threatened, haunted, forced to see the darkest underbelly of humanity. He's subjected to the worst parts of life that are grotesquely ruthless, unforgiving, hopeless. He's forced to reconcile a lot of his goals (like never killing anyone), but not the core of his beliefs.

Not once does he falter in his trust that people are capable of good, that we all deserve that chance to be. He never has a revelation that shakes his faith in humanity, despite constantly being given every reason to. He's the irritatingly optimistic anime protagonist who looks at impossible odds and says "everything will be alright", the way no one can in real life because it never works out that way for us.

And it doesn't for him, either.

Vash does his best, believes in himself, and fails. over and over and over again. He loses everything--loved ones, memories, autonomy. He loses constantly. He's your unrealistically positive hero, being dealt realistically unfavorable hands.

And still, he persists. He never truly wins. Because we never truly win. Life has no happy ending like a story does.

He never truly wins, and yet, he can still find happiness. He meets friends, enjoys good food, watches people love fiercely in both blessing and hardship. He hits unbelievable lows that don't keep him from finding highs. Because he never stops trying to be the best of what he sees in humanity. Because every little bit counts. He never stops believing in humans--believing in you.

Trigun grabs you by the face and stares directly at you. It says "I see you, I see your pain, how much you struggle. I see how sometimes no matter how hard you try, things don't work out. Life isn't a fairy tale. I see how your kindness can come back to hurt you, hurt others. I see you, and I'm proud of you. Life is worth living with love in your heart not because we win, but because we try. We all try. Never stop trying to be kind."

Trigun shows you the cruel reality of life, and leaves you feeling good about it.

Ah, it's a popular interpretation because of that, exactly. I personally read him that way, because, in BBCS at least, he fails spectacularly at forming any believable relationships with women (and don't get me started on Mary, LOL. I'm sorry, but I STRONGLY believe she trapped him with a fake baby – I think John only went with the marriage because he was pissed off at Sherlock for lying to him) but seems to form REALLY strong attachments to men in authoritative (in his eyes) positions. And yes I also mean Lestrade here too. You cannot tell me that John did put out his feelers for Lestrade when they first met, LOL. BUT John fell RIDICULOUSLY hard for Sherlock, and through context clues and the mirroring of Sholto-to-Sherlock, that John didn't fall hard for Sholto too. There's clues in the episode that their falling out happened after Sholto's accident.

I mean... John GRIEVED for Sherlock like a widower. He was "just getting over" Sherlock when he met Mary (who I think was a plant to get Sherlock to come back, by the way). That was THREE YEARS. John "grieved" for Mary for like... a couple months maybe?? Yeah, he didn't give two flying figs about her, sorry. EVEN IN CANON, Mary is RARELY mentioned and is speculated to have been a beard to keep ACD from suffering the same fate as his friend Wilde [THIS LINK ALSO].

This is a topic I love talking about because sexuality is so interesting to me, given my constant re-discovering of my own self. AND because the characters in the show grew up in the same period I did (early 80's and 90's, so Cusp Gen-Xers/Millennials), it makes SO much sense to me that a lot of John's anger and trust issues come from internalized homophobia and misogyny, and he really didn't open up until he became close to men in his life that he respected and admired and treated him with the in-kind respect and kindness. And I just really relate to them so much... it's probably why this show resonated with me so hard and absolutely why my scary journey of Sudden Realization™ happened hahah.

I genuinely believe that John wants to form a fulfilling relationship, but for him, his internal struggle is that he just CANNOT love women no matter how hard he tries – this is a lot of why people joke that John's a horn-dog... he doesn't care who gets his dick wet, just that he gets it. But at the end of the day, I think his internalized issues keep him from accepting that he LOVES Sherlock fiercely, and it's WHY he struggled so hard with Sherlock's death. I mean, after a certain point he gave up dating because Sherlock GAVE him everything he truly wanted. The women in his life were just to get the sex he wasn't getting from Sherlock, LOL. There's also a REALLY old speculation within the fandom that the trip to New Zealand that John took with Sarah went bad because he called out Sherlock's name during sex... soooo yeah.

Anyway, check out these meta from people who are on the Bi spectrum that can dissect John better than me. I recommend the MOST this thread about Harry and John possibly being twins, and how that is relevant to her being a mirror for John in BBCS. People have commented on it with anecdotes from other bi people about their experience with biphobia in the queer community and in the 80s and 90s, and how in this day and age people seem to forget that any smattering of being gay was met with disdain.

QUEER JOY

So last night my partner asked if they could surprise me with a hangout and they took me to a BUTCH vs FEMME OLYMPICS NIGHT!!!!!

We drove an hour to this event space that has a lot of queer nights and it was a DREAM!!!!

there was a relay race that involved putting on a harness and watering a houseplant

the Butch team made me swoon so hard there was an, adam sandler type, a James Dean type, and just every other flavor of butch. The MC was a Very handsome short jewish butch wearing a wifehelper with her hair all slicked back!!! The Judge was the Brooklyn winner of the Twinks vs Dolls competition!!!!

there were so many people saying “i’m butch… Tonight!!” and “i’m for the femmes, Most of the time” and there was a Secret Third Thing category and they were all so beautiful!!!!

I got to see queer people wrestle to eat a piece of candy off of the others ankle where it was tied, i saw a beautiful non-binary person preform burlesque in a challenge to seduce the judge!!!! in the poetry contest this Very handsome Secret Third Thing got up and said “my voice may be dropping, but i still won’t be topping” and the crowd went Wild.

I was invited to smoke weed by a really tall femme in a sick ass goth outfit a mere 15 minutes after i saw her wrestle her butch to the floor. she gave me the gentlest touch on the shoulder and said “we’re going to go have weed, if you’d like to come. you seem lovely”

A Very very handsome butch with her shirt half unbuttoned and her hat slightly askew from the other butches roughhousing gave me the most charming sideways grin as she walked by

there was a small group of millennial gay guys hanging at the bar that just seemed so happy and content to be there and witness the shenanigans in their very normal old navy clothes.

The bartender was in drag and while i was outside smoking, they kicked someone out and used the most Protective and fierce voice to say “Leave this building NOW. DO NOT COME BACK” i tipped them heavily and thanked them for keeping us all safe before i went home.

Not a SINGLE person questioned or looked confused or upset at whoever looking however they wanted stepping up to be on either team.

I got to be with my community and it fucking HEALED me

Top 10 Choices books

This time, I actually managed to rank my favorite books. But don't expect this to happen again 😅

1. The Crown & The Flame: fierce female MC who's not only a queen but also a warrior, male MC that turns into a dragon, intricate adventure with lots of action, great characters (including LIs, side characters and villains) and didn't even need CG art to make the story compelling. Oh, how I miss PB's early years...

2. Ride or Die: I expected the worst from a book which MC is a nerdy teen getting involved with illegal car dealers and car races, but PB went there and made me eat my words. The outstanding plot, the amazing LIs and side characters, actual character development for MC and a beautiful open ending. All of that in one single book? Damn, PB ❤️

3. Hero: I'm not of big fan of super heroes stories, but this one has my heart with its interesting LIs and friends to MC, engaging plot and a villain that looks like he stepped out of Spiderman universe to enter Choicesverse.

4. Bloodbound: even though the two last chapters were absolutely traumatizing (and I will NEVER forgive what the writing team did to Jax and Lily), Bloodbound lore is really engaging, has some great action scenes, most likely the best NSFW scenes and wonderful LIs.

5. Perfect Match: I genuinely thought it was just a romance book. I was so wrong! PM has adventure, sci-fi, drama, comedy and gorgeous LIs. I love it!

6. The Heist Monaco: Smart and cunning MC, interesting and gorgeous LIs, awesome adventure/action/comedy plot and great side characters with some of the best group scenes.

7. It Lives Beneath: best horror book PB has ever written with choices that can drastically affect the ending. Plus, Tom is romanceable 😍

8. A Courtesan of Rome: because it's based on Ancient Roman History (and I love History), the storyline has some inconsistencies that bugged me sometimes, but MC is so awesome, and the LIs were so good that it was hard to choose and I nearly forgot Cassius wasn't this sweet, intellectual and idealistic guy the book makes him look like lol.

9. Mother of The Year: another book PB made me eat my words. I love a book with a fierce MC, wonderful LIs and a daughter so adorable and smart that even this millennial terrified of having kids was all heart eyes in the very first chapter;

10. High School Story: did I expect to be so invested in a story about a teenager having cheesy teenager problems during high school? No. But I was so freaking invested on this drama-free teen trilogy I was pissed when I found out the fourth book was actually a new story without my beloved MC and their hilarious dad and the original HSS LIs had very little relevance to the plot (But I forgive the writing team because of Skye ❤️)

Honorable mentions:

- Distant Shores: Pirate book, time travel and a heartbreaking ending. What's not to like?

- Blades of Light and Shadow: I have to admit I like the plot more than its characters, but also like playing with as an orc (even though the storyline didn't do justice to Orc MC on book one)

- Crimes of Passion: even tho I haven't finished playing it, I looooove a good mystery/thriller/horror book, it's great to play as an adult MC who's actually good at what they do and it's the only single LI book I played in which the LI is worth all the hype;

- Guinevere: also haven't finished playing it, but I love a good period book with a good dose of fantasy. Plus, Arthur is the sweetest;

- Desire & Decorum: NGL after book one, there were so many filler scenes on books two and three, but I was* too madly in love with my Ottoman Prince and liked 90% of the characters to give up on the story ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

"hanging stuff on the walls decreases the property value" and other such statements that prove you're already dead. millennials seem worse though bc they do it to rentals bc they LIKE it. maybe those old women haircuts all the girls had in hs in the 2000s (this is my fav gen z criticism of us millennials bc so fucking true in hs i was like wtf are these middle aged hairstyles how did this become cool everyone looks 35) are responsible for this particular variety of brain damage. from now on i believe in this link. 32 year olds live in light grey horror boxes bc sporting 40 year old hairstyles at age 16 makes you permanently boring and unable to display any taste or personality. these are people who get uncomfortable looking at art or when a friend cries. these are the people who say "i'm sorry for your loss" to a grieving person instead of "life is cruel af my brother no answers come still we must try to survive do you need a fierce hug at this moment or not also i brought you a xanax" like a real human being would. the craziest thing i ever saw my mom do was pay to paint our foyer "eggshell" when the damn walls were already white. this is actual mental illness. not me screaming in the road about how the modern world makes no sense and all the food is microplastic poison. not a single child on earth says their favorite color is light grey or dark white. your soul is sick if beige calms you down. i diagnose you with a severe deficiency of humanity. you need to be hospitalized and forced to discuss philosophy and engage with music until you remember what is valuable about consciousness, which is beautiful as well as cruel, both a gift and curse but it's worth it. i'd rather be awake and have to go to the hospital sometimes when it becomes too much and i end up sobbing drunk in the yard than lobotomized to the point of trading my precious time on earth for money i then spend on beige curtains and a sign that says "caution: caffeinating" to hang in the kitchen proving i am a corpse whose bland heart forgot to stop beating. i mean they shoot horses don't they.

Growing up, I was VERY outgoing and outspoken but I've mellowed a ton. I've been told I come off as shy and a little intimidating until you get to know me. I have always had a love for the unusual things in life and have been able to see beauty in darkness. I was the odd one out (didn't have a ton of friends growing up). I love and care fiercely and I will do anything for my friends and loved ones. I think I'm the funniest person to exist even though I'm probably not.

My students describe me as sassy (I love to roast them) and see me as a second mom haha.

17. opinion on insecurities.

I'm not really sure what this one means, but I'm going to answer it as if it's my opinion on my own insecurities.

I'm insecure about my body. I have the typical hourglass figure (big hips/thighs, big tits, small waist) but I also have hip dips so anything form fitting is a no go. I grew up in the late 90s/early 00s diet culture and have yo-yoed in weight since I was a kid. I had an almond (step)mom and I still feel shame around food. It's something I'm working on in therapy. I have so much pride and respect for Gen Z and their movement of body acceptance and positive body culture. It's something I wish us millennials had done when we were younger.

I had to be treated for the plague in my 20s (yes, the literal bubonic plague)

I used to be a top writer on a fanfic website when I was 13 (early 2000s) and I cringe thinking of the shit I put out 😂

*trigger warning for injury* I have seen/smelt burning flesh (like, flesh melting off someone's body) as a result of an accident in high school. I still get jumpy around explosives. 10/10 don't recommend.

36. 3 dreams you want to fulfill?

I'd like to be a published author that gets to share their thinking with the world (and ngl I'd love to do an international book tour).

I want to get back into music/playing piano (I'm too scared to try and don't even know where to start).

I want to travel more (ideally to Europe). It's so expensive and I'm poor and landlocked.

And I didn’t have to pay for it!” You are so hopped up on caffeine that you’re talking a mile a minute, “I told ’em I forgot my wallet and was staying with a trigger-happy Mandalorian who’s not a morning person. She even threw in these things!”

You dig around in your bookbag and proudly present him with two foil-wrapped packages that you are fervently praying are breakfast burritos.

Mando is staring at you, still holding his cup in one hand like a three-week dead lark. 

“Your hair,” he says, audibly baffled. “It’s…curly.” 

This is an understatement. Your hair is fiercely curly. Not the stuck-a-finger-in-a-socket variety like Peli’s, but long ringlets and waves that most days have a mind of their own. Meeting Mando had coincided with one of the rare occasions you braved the flatiron, and your hair was braided when you fell asleep the night before. Now it was in its usual state of chaos, falling loose past your shoulders and ending just short of your waist. 

“Surprise,” you answer, understanding his bewilderment. “Sometimes I wear it straight.”

He has yet to look away, as if he’s still confused.

The thing is, the truly horrendous thing is, James Potter has always loves too openly.

He loves with his heart on his sleeves: he loves with no conditions and no regrets, he loves with such a passion that sometimes it was too much, he loved so fiercely that no one truly deserves to be loved by him.

His heart —and his souls— was spread through the world, attached to a millennial of different people: friends, and animals, and family, and girls and boys and lovers and teachers and even nemesis.

He was warmth and caress of sun on the face on a gloomy day. He was the fire that illuminated the paths and the wood that revitalized a rooting soul. He was the embodiment of everything that love was.

And the thing is, the truly horrendous thing is, James Potter loves too openly and he loves Regulus Black.

Regulus Black has been loved by James Potter in all the ways there are to be loved. He knows all there is to know about James freaking Potter and his (millions of) hearts, scattered all around the world and oceans and skies.

And the thing is, the truly horrendous thing is, James Potter loves too openly, except for Regulus Black and himself.

James Potter’s heart was so big that it was impossible to even begin to phantom the idea that there lacked space in there to love himself.

Regulus Black saw it, the was James gave a piece of his beautiful, truly beautiful, heart to everyone but never kept a piece for himself. What a hunting truth.

And so, Regulus Black, scared of nightmares and ghost and so in love with James Potter, broke his own heart and handed a piece of it to the golden boy because no one deserved to be loved more than James Potter.

Because if he wouldn’t love himself, Regulus would love him for him.

How in the heck do you keep managing to send messages after I’m asleep when I stay up to at least midnight most of the time my dude? Do you ever sleep? Did you become some sorta creature of the night w/out letting any of us know? 

3. Favourite and least favourite companion?Favorite is hard but I gotta go with King of Red Lions, WW. Least is either Tael MM or Ezlo MC.

7. How many of the main series games have you beat/completed?What’s the distinction between main series and spinoff? I’ve played OoT, MM, FS, WW, MC, TP, PH, ST, SS, ALBW, BotW. I’ve beat all of those many times except ST (fucking pan pipes) and SS (too repetitive) so I guess nine?

10. Favourite Zelda design?THEY’RE ALL CUTE.

11. Favourite Ganon/Ganondorf design?Probably OoT and WW. TP is interesting in the way when it’s actually properly lit and detailed like in SSBB so you can see shit it’s p neat but still very generic evil guy.

(Real talk I really disliked Rivali until the champion’s ballad. and don’t get me wrong he’s still a jerk but is more understandable. Mipha too, but she finally got some characterization more than “she really loves link, guys.”)
