Mudflats or mud flats, also known as tidal flats or, in Ireland, slob or slobs, are coastal wetlands that form in intertidal areas where sediments have been deposited by tides or rivers. A global analysis published in 2019 suggested that tidal flat ecosystems are as extensive globally as mangroves, covering at least 127,921 km2 (49,391 sq mi) of the Earth's surface. They are found in sheltered areas such as bays, bayous, lagoons, and estuaries; they are also seen in freshwater lakes and salty lakes (or inland seas) alike, wherein many rivers and creeks end. Mudflats may be viewed geologically as exposed layers of bay mud, resulting from deposition of estuarine silts, clays and aquatic animal detritus. Most of the sediment within a mudflat is within the intertidal zone, and thus the flat is submerged and exposed approximately twice daily.

Writing Rambles, Setting pt. 1

I should really do something with this blog before it becomes another lurker acc for me, huh? Well, here's a shot:

Aldenbalm Marsh - Saltweller Remains An estuary marshland littered with mangroves and shallow sandbanks. vibrant mangrove trees hold fast in the sandy foundation they have, strengthening the sandbeds into formidable ground should anything try to wash it away. The shallows are teeming with salt water fish majorly, easy food if you know how to catch them. The canopies made are sparse but the rare respite you find offers a fantastic view. At least it once did.

Once a populated area, prominent habitation occuring in what was once known as Saltweller, a rivertown capitalising on the fish and forage, it now lays decaying and eroding from the washing tides. Once expansive boardwalks that made a grid of traffic from residential to commercial, all rooted in the mangrove reinforced sand, now lay buried and under the water, growing algae and kelp if not splintered and taken by the tides.

This change in population was sharp, a steep decline over the span of a year thanks to one underlying problem: the nymphs. Water nymphs had made a habit of occupying local rivers that ran through the inland traveling waters behind Saltweller, and thus were at a sort of natural competition with the residents of Saltweller for supplies and space. This competition was no stranger to ramping up, ultimately spilling into a nymph-led raid on the town, leaving no survivors from those who stood and fought.

What is seen now is salt-washed timbers, ruined plantations grown wild and uncouth, and only backed by the melancholic wash of the waves. The town was lost and destroyed, but still sits as a site of nymph infestation. Infestation is a strong word to be used, but its what they call it, the survivors.

If only they could have existed in peace...

May 28 - Day 1 - Backroads - Vitorino De Piaes - Torre de Gomariz Hotel -

We met our Backroads leaders and other guests (20 total) and boarded a bus for the drive to the countryside of Vitorino dos Piaes for the beginning of our 9 mile walk along the Camino de Santiago. The Camino is a well known pilgrimage route through either France, Spain or Portugal. The day was perfect for walking and the terrain was mostly level on hard surfaces. At mid-day we stopped for a picnic lunch at a private villa that was built in the middle of the 18th Century and overlooking the valley below. The villa has been in the family since it was built and now has many modern amenities along with the charm of the past. After lunch we continued our walk along narrow streets lined with a variety of homes, stone walls built without mortar, grape vine trellises, a variety of vegetable gardens along with an occasional sheep. Due to the rain in Northern Portugal the area sustains an agricultural abundance.

We ended the day at Torre de Gomariz, a hotel that has a modern elegance along with historical references. Part of the building dates from the 15th Century, however, the rooms and amenities are very 21st Century. The hotel has 24 rooms all facing the surrounding fountains, grape vines, fruit trees and tall pines. Our first dinner and reception was at the hotel and it was nice way to end the first day of walking.

May 29 - Day 2 - Backroads - Camino Portugues - Torre de Gomariz Hotel -

This day we walked a stage of the Camino Portugues through the town of Ponte de Lima and across its eponymous bridge that was first built in 1125 and strengthened in the 15th Century. We walked past vineyards, through tree-lined paths with views of streams. The weather was perfect and the lunch spot was a welcome sight with its seating overlooking a large stream all shaded with many plants. After a delightful lunch we walked the final segment with a stop and beverage after our 7.5 mile day. We returned to our hotel retreat for a rest before our evening feast of selected salads, a variety of meat and fish along with a medley of vegetable choices. The evening was highlighted with a fado a music ensemble. Fado music is Portuguese folk music that developed in the early 19th Century.

May 30 - Day 3 - Backroads - Minho Estuary - Parador de Baiona, Spain -

We began the day with a drive over the Minho River and into Spain to begin our climb of the Monte Santa Tecla. The climb is steep with a stunning view of the river and towns in the distance. After a brief rest we headed down the mountain to the beach for our continued walk on a boardwalk close to the jagged shore. We ended our walk for lunch in the town of Guarda overlooking the bay. We enjoyed a late lunch of salads, roasted vegetables and a variety of shell fish. After lunch we took the van to the town of Baiona and our our next hotel, the Paradores, a medieval looking resort that was built in the middle of the 20th Century. The hotel is surrounded by high fortress walls where the town was first located. The high stone walls, towers and other features were constructed in the 15th and 16th Centuries. The views from the walls were spectacular overlooking the small bay and the many islands in the distance. We ended 7.6 mile day with a well deserved gelato.

A different kind of oceanic break - here we’re on a boardwalk over an estuary. Later, we saw some horseshoe crabs getting it on in costume. (Don’t worry, I got some photos). Sound on for the sea birds.

GloPoWriMo 8.2: Don-Wah-Wah-Wahhhn

We boarded on a Greyhound headed south

He unto me his love undying pledged

And took me out to see the bay’s great mouth

The estuary at the world’s edge

Ever faithful and ever devout

He lay there on a hill upon the sedge

Though honestly that’s not quite how it went

The driver kindly told us to get bent.

So by the bay we next a steed did buy

A Corvette stallion for the lady love

“My goodness what a dashing prince”, said I

“You see what others set then rise above

Why I do believe I might now start to cry”

So dashing was his the valiant way he strove

He then let out a ceremonious belch

And made some armpit noises with a squelch.

So what, he wasn’t the Don Juan I craved

But still we ventured down Route 50 more

Because I almost drowned and then he saved

Me, thus, the man I do adore

What noble way he fought the beast and braved

The tides, the monsters lurking far from shore.

Though then the Coast Guard had to fish him out

He got it socked to him by rainbow trout.

With island hopping gusto he did rise

To seize with me the treasures of that bay

In brilliance below the crystal skies

With him upon my side I dared to stray

Such manifold delights as now defies

My explanation, he had such a way!

Though these detours were heavily dictated

By wine, and that man’s thirst was never sated.

At Easton-town sweet landfall did we make

The fair shore to my sea-tossed eye a boon
