I’m going to say it. I think Moses is going to win the tanakh sexyman bracket.

It’s all fun and games voting for trees and rocks and background characters, but even aside from the picture chosen, I can’t imagine *not* voting for Moses. I don’t care if he’s a sexyman or not. Like. That’s my guy. It’s him! It’s a silly little tumblr poll and I am not very religious at all but he is the main guy. To me. I’m sure all these other stories are just as important rabbinically speaking and in terms of like creating and protecting the Jewish people. When I think about when Brendon was streaming and what a beautiful community he created, it sometimes doesn’t feel real. Like he hung out with us for hours at a time talking to us, answering questions, being our biggest cheerleader with his positivity. He taught us about different aspects of creating music, he shared his own struggles and helped us with ours, he joked, he sang for us/with us, he shared honestly and with humor and sometimes too much, lol. He’d be the first to admit he is an over sharer and an open book. He took us on tour with him and streamed before every show. I miss just listening to music with him on those days we’d go down a rabbit hole of older music, him introducing us to new music and some of his favorites. I loved how excited he would get talking about it and him sharing bits I never knew about these songs. Truly his passion. I was always learning something from him. It was a safe space filled with love and positivity. If you were there, you know. Friendships were made from hanging in the chat. Friendships that I still have and even got to meet these friends on the VLV tour. I am so grateful for that!! I miss him and his light.

so i'm writing an 8th year fic and h&d are taking a muggle studies class together in which they read one of shakespeare's plays, and i'm trying to write a final project (for which they are partners) but like. hogwarts academics don't seem all that uhhhhh rigorous to me (like we see the students complaining about having to write a foot of parchment which is essentially ONE PAGE HANDWRITTEN) and i'm a little worried that my assignment is too rigorous.

it involves a lot of like. thinking analytically and using your imagination wrt the motivations of people unlike yourself, and that's not rlly something they do much at hogwarts as far as i can see. BUT it is muggle studies, and like. they could definitely all use some practice at those skills, following the recent implosion of their society.

reading comprehension my man, the worst case scenario is that it will be like the academic boycotts of south africa during apartheid, which ruined the research in south africa, deprived the world of innovation and scholars from crippling it's educational system (how many brilliant medical researchers might there be in north korea?) AND didn't do shit to end apartheid.

i know we all like to be 'boycotting south africa worked' but it largely didn't - the boycotts and sanctions went on for forever, and the thing that finally made it end was the collapse of the soviet union, which had been propping up the system against lacking and declining support in the white population of SA (and obviously no support from the non-white pop)

i don't care about responding to most of this incoherent nonsense but i truly have to point out how revealing this viewpoint is- the idea that it was academic boycotts of south africa which deprived the world of innovation and scholars, rather than the system of apartheid which quite literally prevented entire groups of people from accessing even the lowest rungs of academia.

you can spin yourself around in circles forever discussing efficacy, and there are indeed real arguments to be made about the academic boycotts being largely symbolic in comparison to the material effects of sanctions and more economically motivating boycotts. your argument reveals the true heart of why this bothers you, though: you care more about white south africans and israelis suffering from dents in their resumes than you do about black south africans and palestinians being denied access to fundamental human rights and even their very lives.

literally none of this matters. people are dying. get that through your head or shut the fuck up. from the river to the sea palestine will be free, and you can cry yourself to sleep every single night about all the academic papers with one less imperialist name co authoring them

Seven of 12 proposed science textbooks for Texas 8th graders were rejected Friday by the Republican-controlled state Board of Education because they propose solutions to the climate emergency or were published by a company with an environmental, social, and governance policy.

The Texas Tribunereported that the 15-member board, which for the first time was required to include climate education for 8th graders, approved five of 12 proposed science textbooks, but called on their publishers to remove content deemed false or presenting a negative portrayal of oil and gas in the nation's biggest fossil fuel producer.

"America's future generations don't need a leftist agenda brainwashing them in the classroom to hate oil and natural gas," said Republican state energy regulator Wayne Christian, who had urged the board to choose books that promote planet-heating fossil fuels.

Some board members also objected to textbooks that did not include alternatives to the theory of evolution. One textbook was approved only after the removal of images highlighting that human beings—taxonomically classified as great apes—share ancestry with monkeys.

"Teaching creationism or any of its offshoots, such as intelligent design, in Texas' public schools is unlawful, because creationism is not based in fact," Chris Line, an attorney with the Freedom from Religion Foundation, said Friday. "Courts have routinely found that such teachings are religious, despite many new and imaginative labels given to the alternatives."

"Federal courts consistently reject creationism and its ilk, as well as attempts to suppress the teaching of evolution, in the public schools," Line added.

State standards approved by the board's conservative majority in 2021 do not include creationism as an alternative to evolution. The standards also acknowledge that human activities contribute to climate change.

Despite an overwhelming scientific consensus that human activity—primarily, the burning of fossil fuels—drives global heating, Republican board Secretary Patricia Hardy argued before the vote that such a stance amounts to "taking a position that all of that is settled science, and that our extreme weather is caused by climate change."

One textbook was rejected because its publisher has an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policy. ESG frameworks account for workplace diversity, the treatment of employees, and preparedness for the climate crisis.

Democratic board member Marisa Perez-Diaz said during debate on the textbooks that "my fear is that we will render ourselves irrelevant moving forward when it comes to what publishers want to work with us and will help us get proper materials in front of our young people, and for me that's heartbreaking."

The National Science Teaching Association—a group of 35,000 U.S. science educators—on Thursday implored the board to reject "misguided objections to evolution and climate change [that] impede the adoption of science textbooks in Texas."

As in other GOP-run states, Texas officials have pushed book bans and other restrictions in schools and libraries, even as they portray themselves as champions of freedom. According to freedom of expression defenders PEN America, only Florida banned more books in schools than Texas during the 2022-23 academic year.
