SUNDAY CANDY (I’VE BEEN PRAYING FOR YA’)
synopsis: one should not attend the end of the world without a good breakfast. thankfully, its just sunday.

It was a simple spread, according to Kiyoomi.
Vibrant strawberry jam filling the airy pockets of fresh ciabatta, smothered in dandelion-yellow butter and warmed comfortably. Between the two of you, quality time is worth more than gold. Breakfast, especially, has become a ritual of sorts. And Sunday brunch is always holy. You hum sleepily, happily, thinking of all the tasks you won't do today. You watch him shelter the food from your prying eyes, and you nearly call him out for it. “Close your eyes,” He whispers, as he flicks off the gas stove, “Food’s ready.”
You push your hands over your eyes, spreading your fingers to take peaks at him. He plates your food, heaping portions that nearly topple off the plate. You grin, promising yourself to finish it all.
At one point, his eyes meet yours and you snap your fingers shut with a squeak. Whoops. He laughs, and you both pretend you weren't peaking.
“Okay, open your eyes now.” He mumbles, wiping his hands on a dish towel, “And tell me what you think.”
Removing your hands from your eyes, you gaze down at the plate below you. It’s a confession, a declaration of love. All of it.
A heavy porcelain plate, a housewarming gift you gave him when the two of you were just friends. The edge is chipped from dropping it in the sink one too many times. The memory makes you feel warm.
The food itself is plated with enough space between each dish that it doesn’t touch, remembering your disdain for mixed textures. You never mentioned anything, but he picked up on it.

I remember those days when my biggest problem was to make the decision of which pair of shoes I ought to wear to our regular Sunday night party. The black sandals with the stones or the platform golden colour ones? Life used to be so easy. We only cared about parties and the freedom of doing whatever we wanted to. We didn’t have to take responsibility for anybody except for ourselves. We didn’t have to care about paying the rent or the bill itself. We didn’t have bills! Even if we got sick we just had to walk into the company clinic where they usually just gave us a Panadol for first round but if we were stubborn enough and kept going back they might have been able to actually cure us.
This all sounds like a very easy and comfortable life but at the same time it was also very empty and humdrum. I can recall many lonely nights when my best friend was a bottle of red wine. I remember those days when all my friends were either flying or on vacation. When I had nothing to do but think about the meaning of life and my role in it and that made my mood sink even deeper and lead me to the arms of my previously introduced good friend, Cabernet Sauvignon. I remember those birthdays, Christmas eves, family celebrations where all my family members were feasting together and I couldn’t be there. I remember I was always so behind with sleeping. I was always so tired and sleepy. I could never sleep enough. I remember all those endless night flights, oops I skipped a good night sleep again, which my body should catch up on one day, but despite all the efforts it can never fully recover. I remember I basically ‘walked’ to London from Dubai that’s how busy and tiring the flight was. Then I have 24 hours layover in London, I am dead tired when I arrive but I want to get out from the hotel immediately to visit the Big Ben, the Tower Bridge and the London Eye. Then came those notorious US flights. How can they be so exhausting? How is it possible that on a 15 hours Los Angeles flight where we are delivering non-stop service and working continuously, we get less than 3 hours break? After landing I’m telling myself that this was the last time I ever flew, never again, I quit my job. Then I spend 2 days in Los Angeles. I visit Disney Land, I am resting on Santa Monica beach and by the time I have to fly back to Dubai I get over my angry thoughts from before and I forget about my oath about not flying ever again. Well, I am trying to, but then jetleg reminds me of all of it. I had tried to get a good night’s rest but all in vain because jetleg didn’t let me. So I am already very tired at the beginning of the flight. I remember those Friday brunches where all my friends participated but I couldn’t show up because it was impossible to swap a night Bombay turnaround. I had to remind myself that flight attendants don’t have weekends.
However, I will not complain. There were Dubai birthday parties where I could attend and those were epic ones. I also remember the 5 star hotels (unfortunately I cannot erase the 3 star airport hotels from my memory, I remember those ones as well) where we stayed on layovers. I remember those amazing buffet breakfast which I never skipped. I remember that I loved flying with friends. Even though those rare occasions happened once in a blue moon but they were always so much fun. I still miss my lovely Facecard which helped me get into fancy gyms and beach clubs for free, got me huge discounts in elegant restaurants and bars. I remember enjoy living in Dubai. I miss the weather, the beach, the restaurants, the bars, and the endless activities. I miss having a cocktail in Atmosphere bar at the top of Burj Khalifa. However, it is true that Ce La Vie on top of Marina Bay Sands compensated that experience for me for one year. I remember those galley talks on those quiet night flights when we were just sitting on top of the metal containers holding a cup of coffee or tea and were just gossiping about everything. There was always someone with relationship drama. I remember those funny colleagues who could always make the most terrible flights memorable and enjoyable. I remember how we were staring at the interphone with the sweet hope to get the magical call which finally had arrived: “20 to top”. Such a relief, it’s almost over.
I made friends from all over the world, from different nationalities, different races, tearing down all stereotypes and prejudices. I learned and understood different cultures and traditions. I became more tolerant and accepting towards others. I visited my friends everywhere in the world. I was the only one who was able to travel to my friend’s wedding apart form her parents from our home country to the US and could support her on those stressful days before the wedding. I experienced the downside of staff travel. I was left behind a few times at certain countries as a result of a full or overbooked flight. I tried all types of traditional meals and dishes. I participated in a cooking class in Bangkok, I had nasi goreng in Indonesia, chilli crab in Singapore, hot pot in China, I ate ramen and sushi in Japan, pho in Vietnam, Korean BBQ in Seoul, paella in Madrid, mussels in Belgium, I tasted steak in South-Africa, hamburger in the USA, snails in France, duck in Czech Republic and the list is endless.
I miss travel the most. I daresay I travelled around the world. I ate croissant at the bottom of the Eiffel Tower, I was munching Every Flavour Beans in the Harry Potter Park in Orlando, I had tapas next to the Sagrada Familia, I savoured a big pint of Sapporo wearing a geisha costume on the streets of Kyoto, I enjoyed a boat ride on the Floating Market of Bangkok, I was rushing with the crowd on Times Square, I got lost in Shanghai, I tasted the best pasta with a view of the Colosseum, I had crazy parties at Lan Kwai Fong in Hong Kong, I climbed the Table Mountain in Cape Town, I admired the Buckingham Palace, I took selfie with Mini Mouse in the Californian Disneyland, I was walking on the Great Wall of China, I witnessed Sakura in Japan many times, I applauded Aladdin on Broadway, I had an ice cream in front of the Sydney Opera House, I payed my respect to history at the Red Square in Moscow, I got amazed in front of the magnificence of the Terra Cotta Army, I bowed my head in front of the superbness of Christ the Redeemer in Rio, I enjoyed the Argentinean steak in Buenos Aires, I became soaking wet at the Niagara Falls, I got astonished at the ruins of Angkor in Cambodia, I traveled back time at the Acropolis in Athens, I was chilling in Phuket and Bali and the list is endless.
I am not the kind of girl who was dreaming to become a flight attendant since she was a little girl. This wasn’t my childhood dream. It still happened and I still enjoyed almost every moment of it (apart from a few masochist crew nobody enjoyed an Istanbul turnaround). I loved the lifestyle, I loved going to beach clubs, I loved going to fancy restaurants and bars, I loved working out in the best gyms, I loved that I could try so many different cuisines of the world. Most importantly I am grateful to meet so many amazing people and friends due to my job.

We went to watch the Wizards (basketball) for the first time on Friday evening. Wow it was a close game. At the end of regular time it was 104-104 and in the five minutes of overtime, only two baskets were scored with the Wizards running out winners 107-106.
I have to say I had been tempted not to go in the first place - the cold I acquired from the visitors really settled in on Friday and I was feeling a bit less than perfect around lunchtime, but in the end I'm glad we went. It's a shame the visitors were away because her boyfriend is very much into basketball (he coaches a team in the UK) and would have enjoyed the evening I suspect. Oh well, we picked up a Wizards cap for him, so there was a little consolation.
They came back from Omaha on Saturday lunchtime. We didn't do a lot - went for a shorter walk than when they we here at the beginning of last week around the Dupont Circle neighbourhood (the advertised craft fair wasn't up to much but we did discover a great chocolate store, so not all bad!)
The Boy came over on Sunday morning for brunch (well, more accurately my wife went over to fetch him). There was a camaraderie between him and the 'son-in-law' over team sport coaching and they compared notes over rugby and basketball for quite a while after the ladies had left the table.
After a late lunch down in the Waterfront at Farmers, Fishers, Bakers (we haven't been there before - it was more than acceptable) I took my daughter and accompanying humans back to the airport on Sunday evening. Obviously it was great to see them, though it occurred to me it's the last time I will see my granddaughter as a baby - I figure that by the next time I see her she will be at least crawling, if not walking.
Yesterday was Thanksgiving so we've been off work for a couple of days and eaten an enormous amount of turkey! Obviously there is more left despite the assistance of the Boy, who has just left to catch a flight to Dubai where he's helping a team in a Sevens tournament.
We're supposed to be going over the road to a neighbour to watch USA play England in the footie World Cup, but my cold is a right nuisance today, despite the medication, so I've cancelled rather than spread the germs.

It is a beautiful Sunday morning... A ray of sunlight hits the wall, brightening up the bedroom, and you start to drift out of sleep... You feel me snuggled up beside you, still deep asleep, and you smile to yourself -- you have spent the last weekend over here, with me. You have finally closed that Middle East deal you have been working on for the last six months, and if you manage to do the same in Singapore in the next few months, you can pretty much take the rest of the year off...and then the deal details start spinning in your head, slowly bringing on the sad realisation that you have to catch a flight this evening, again...
A chonky cat enters stage left. You cannot see him fully, but you can see the vertical tail with the bent tip, like a shark’s fin, circumnavigating your side of the bed. He jumps up on the bed by your head. You try to play dead, but you are too late. He has seen you blink. He knows that you know that he knows. And you know that he means business! He pokes you in the face with his paw, to call out your bluff... You reluctantly open your eyes, to realise that he is a much stronger Resting Bitch Face act than you do. You quietly sigh and veeery carefully get out of bed, not to wake me up. You and cats all know that there might be worse things in life than waking me up this early on a Sunday, but they are few and far apart and the last such thing has wiped out the dinosaurs off this planet. You get up, and go to the kitchen, flanked by the Feline Overlords in an open box formation.

You equally spread the canned cat food into four bowls, and put them on the floor. Feeding frenzy begins...

-- You and your cats! He is a thug and you know it!
-- Maybe! But he had troubled childhood. He is a cat of divorce! He needs a father figure in his life! -- I say, with the strongest conviction and trying my best not to laugh.
-- What he really needs is a diet! He weighs more than a leg of jamon!-- say you, turning around and hugging me at the waist. -- Last night was really great! I am now a big big fan of that thing you did to my bum with your fingers... Actually, the whole weekend was really great. Thank you! You have this strange talent to happy me...if this is a word. Every time I come over to see you -- and your ridiculous cats, -- it is as if the world goes away. Just for a few days, or even hours, but it does make a big difference. I really rest with you around. Your weird world view and ridiculous wisdom make me smile. A lot of things make me laugh, but you actually make me smile inside. Very few people ever could... Thank you for having me over!
-- Always a pleasure, handsome! I quite enjoy having you over, too! It is nice to not always be on my own... And at times, you are a better conversationalist than my cats, too!

-- Ha! Oh, the cheek! But to change the subject from me being unfavourably compared to cats -- I need to go to Singapore and China this upcoming week, as you know, and then probably to Dubai to start the implementation, but after that, I could fly in for another weekend? Or I could take us somewhere nice, just you and I? Some fine food, SPA for two? No cats! You can bring them souvenirs... Milan? To get you some more shoes? Vienna for an opera, if something good is on? Switzerland? I remember you said you love it in summer... Or anywhere else a plane could land? -- you say, holding my hands in yours.
-- Gosh, I’d really love to. But I have a private tour already booked for Portugal that weekend, and then I am off to Paris directly from there, and then to Normandy for a shoot...
-- Oh. Ok, I see. Oh well, no harm no foul... -- you mutter, trying to hide that you are a bit hurt. -- It is not the cat thing, is it? Coz, you know, maybe some of them could come along?
-- Haha, no, it is definitely not the cats!!! And I’d love to see you, but I already have everything booked!
-- We’d have to find some other time then, but very soon!
-- Oh yes, totally! Tea? Or shall we go out for brunch?
And the next time we manage to get a weekend together turns out to be in six weeks. We go to Tuscany. And it goes great, fantastic, even. But then your Middle East deal starts going sour, and the Singapore one proves trickier than you thought. It takes over two months to sort out and meet up, this time in Sweden, stealing a few days when you are flying out after work meetings and I am flying in for a tour. And then we agree to meet up very soon in the new year, as we both have family plans for Christmas. But we never meet again. We try a few times, but schedules really do not cooperate, and we eventually give up... Without any drama, without any breaking up talks. And greatly without pain, too. Not because we stopped liking each other, or enjoying each other’s company, or because someone better came along.
It is just, sometimes the life that you love and that you worked so hard to create and arrange gets in the way of even the best things you have going on. And then you get two options -- to change the life you love, or to let go of the things that you have going on... And more often than not, we pick the easier option, with every such choice gradually becoming, in the immortal words of Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb in our solitude.
