On Today’s Episode Of Cincinnati’s Most Wanted: The Notorious Nuttle Gang
Few motorists rumbling through the I-71 valley east of town give a thought to the long-lost lair of the notorious Nuttle Gang. For a good portion of the 1880s, however, travelers through that area at the base of Mount Adams lived in fear of the brigands. Alvin F. Harlow, in his “The Serene Cincinnatians,” sums up the legend:
“For several years in the 1880s a band of thugs, the Nuttle gang, harbored in an old railway tunnel, running from Deer Creek under Avondale, which had been years in building and was finally abandoned. A policeman chased one of the ruffians to the mouth of the tunnel one day, but dared not enter it. Not until some of them were caught outside their lair was the band broken up.”
The tunnel in which the Nuttle Gang sheltered from police interference was constructed during a pre-Civil War initiative to run a railroad line from downtown Cincinnati to Dayton. A significant portion of this tunnel was completed, from approximately Elsinore Place to just beyond Eden Park Drive. The line was never completed and the whole project forgotten after other railroads found cheaper routes into the city.
Abandoned tunnels are almost a cliché among outlaw gangs, but the Deer Creek cavern provided superb security for the local ruffians. It was capacious enough to store oodles of boodle, and any invaders peering into the subterranean darkness would be silhouetted against the bright opening, making easy targets. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer [27 July 1932]:
“In this era the most notorious of several group of local rowdies was the Deer Creek bunch, known as the Nuttle Gang. They made Dublin Street, or “Turn Back Avenue,” their hangout, but operated over a considerably wider area. Breweries sending wagon loads of beer to Walnut Hills put on an extra keg or two for the Nuttle Gang, nor did the drivers interfere when they took their toll. Wayfarers suffered at their hands and for several years they terrorized that neighborhood.”
Tumblr media
One of the Nuttles – Dan, one of the family who gave the gang its name – complained that people blamed every petty crime or disturbance near Gilbert Avenue on the Nuttle Gang, identifying every bum or petty crook collared in that part of town as a member of the group. It cheapened the prestige of the gang, Dan huffed.
Ironically, for a gang that gained such a sordid reputation, the ringleaders – James “Cock” Nuttle and William “Billy” Nuttle – were sons of a policemen killed in the line of duty. The modus operandi of the Nuttles involved swarming a victim, making identification and apprehension difficult. When the gang beat up a grocer who refused to give them liquor on credit in 1879, police filled most of the cells in the Hammond Street station with James Flannery, John Smith, Patrick “Shad” Nuttle, Dan Nuttle, Tom Haydon, Billy Nuttle, Thomas Nuttle, Pat Frasey and Bridget (Yes, a woman.) Flannery.
The next year, according to the Cincinnati Gazette [3 March 1880], one of the Nuttles used the old railroad tunnel to escape from the police. Shad Nuttle and William Burke robbed a butcher on Gilbert Avenue and his cries brought two police officers, whistles blowing, onto the scene. Burke was captured quickly.
“Officer Butler chased Nuttle into the old tunnel at the upper end of Deer Creek, where he hid himself. A watch was placed at the mouth of the tunnel, and Nuttle will be arrested when he concludes to come out. Two of Nuttles brothers were sentenced to the penitentiary Saturday. Another Nuttle is in the Work House.”
The Nuttles’ domain extended so far as to create friction with a West End gang led by Buck Mullaney. After one scrap, Red Morris of the West End boys challenged Billy McGee of the Nuttles to a shotgun duel. Although both gangs showed up south of Covington for the showdown, the challenge devolved into a general free-for-all with numerous injuries. They were a rough bunch. In 1882, Billy Nuttle won a barroom brawl but was later sued by Allen Combs, who lost the tussle. Combs claimed Nuttle caused $2,100 in damages by biting off the end of his nose.
In addition to lawless mayhem, the Nuttles had a legitimate side hustle around election time. The local Democratic Party hired the thugs to maintain order (meaning to chase off any Republican voters) at a couple of East End polling sites. The chaotic and bloody 1884 election inspired a Congressional investigation that highlighted the Nuttles’ strong-arm tactics.
The beginning of the end for the Nuttles came, not from police arrests, but from internal dissension. In 1887, James “Cock” Nuttle was shot and killed by James “Jaydice” Kennedy after an argument about a woman. Even in death, Cock Nuttle caused trouble. As an undertaker’s wagon hauled his body home from Good Samaritan Hospital, the vehicle tumbled down a twenty-foot embankment near some railroad tracks. Nuttle’s coffin shattered and his body was thrown onto the ground. The coroner, called to the scene, ruled that the corpse was intact enough for burial.
In 1894, Billy Nuttle died from pneumonia in the city hospital and his obituary included the dreadful fates of a half-dozen Nuttle Gang members: “Dickety” Quinn succumbed to delirium tremens, “Yap” Skelly shot by the cops, Charley Keegan broke his neck falling from a train, Cocky Smith killed by a rival, George Fay a hunted fugitive, Dan Flannagan jailed in St. Louis.
Once the Nuttles were gone, the Deer Creek Valley was designated as the Hunt Street Dump, Hunt Street being the former name of Reading Road. By the early 1900s, the valley had been completely filled in with tons of garbage and refuse. The retired dump was graded and converted into a playground with six baseball fields. The old railroad tunnel slumbered under the detritus.
In 1951, the city looked into using the buried railroad tunnel as an air-raid shelter, but those plans led nowhere. A decade later, construction for I-71 burrowed through the old tunnel and brought back memories. Si Cornell, in the Cincinnati Post [22 March 1966], revived some of the old tales:
“I-71 construction workers who uncovered the pre-Civil War railway tunnel near Eden Park’s entrance have reported finding old beer bottles (particularly from the Bellevue Brewery) in the rubble. This isn’t particularly surprising. Maybe 80 years ago, when the Deer Creek Commons was an odiferous dump, the ‘Deer Creek Gang’ hung out in the tunnel, through which no train ever ran. Favorite stunt of these notorious loafers was to steal whatever possible from any brewery wagon that ventured anywhere near. This liquid loot was lugged into the tunnel for the gang’s consumption. Wonder is that the construction workers aren’t finding whole kegs, not mere bottles.”

“Delegate Is Held After Complaint Regarding Relief,” Toronto Globe. October 24, 1932. Page 1. ---- City Asking Deportation for Allegedly Troublesome Irishman --- MAYOR WITHOUT ESCORT ---- Draper Withdraws Special Police Assigned to Prevent Annoyance ----- Leaving Mayor Stewart’s office late yesterday afternoon, after reading a carefully prepared document, in which he made a complaint regarding the treatment of the unemployed in city hostels, William McKnight, aged 23, no home, was arrested by city detectives, on instructions of Commissioner of Public Welfare A. W. Laver.
McKnight was taken to the nearest police station, and held on a charge of vagrancy. He will be remanded, and in the meantime Commissioner Laver will ask the Federal Department of Immigration to deport him to Ireland. McKnight said he was born in Dublin, but later claimed to be born in Belfast. Recently McKnight was arrested in connection with a case of stolen property, and after being held in the Don Jail, for some days, was released from custody. After his release, he took part in a meeting in a downtown church on Sunday afternoon, during which demands were framed by the unemployed.
Escort Withdrawn Coincident with McKnight’s arrest, Chief Constable Draper withdrew the police escort which has been accompanying the mayor about the city. The Mayor’s family have been annoyed greatly during the past three weeks by men of some organization, one of whom endeavored to prevent Miss Stewart from driving an automobile into the family garage. Mrs. Stewart has been annoyed also with telephone messages, during which she was subjected to abusive language.
Interrogated by Mayor Stewart yesterday afternoon, McKnight is said to have admitted that he was not alone in the agitation, and that there were two dozen men associated with him. He declared that while in jail on the former charge the Canadian Labor Defense League’s solicitor, Onie Brown, handled his case.
Commissioner of Public Welfare Laver stated that the charge of vagrancy would be preferred against him, because he, McKnight, had refused to do light work when his turn in Wellington House in return for food and lodging. The request for deportation must be made by the city on account of the policy of the Federal Government to deport a British-born citizen unless asked to do so by a municipality.
Rejects Assistance McKnight’s agitation on behalf of the unemployed took the form of a personal criticism on Saturday. He refused to accept what Wellington House had to offer him, tossed back into an official’s face a ticket for the Fred Victor Mission, and would have nothing to do with Seaton House. He charged that officials in charge of the hostels were ‘grafters and thieves,’ and alleged that one was intoxicated. McKnight, it is said, became more infuriated with each attempt on the part of the civic officials to satisfy his demands, and finally he left his office at Church and Adelaide Streets, asserting he intended to pay a visit to Mayor Stewart’s home last night to present his demands in person.
Police, who are in touch continually with the unemployed, learned what McKnight claimed he would do, and despatched an officer to Mayor Stewart’s home. McKnight, however, did not appear, and yesterday they were asked by Commissioner Laver to locate him.
Found at Mission McKnight is said to have been located in the Fred Victor Mission and taken to Detective headquarters in the City Hall by Detectives Waterhouse and Storm. The Mayor requested the police to bring him to his office. McKnight read his carefully prepared in which he claimed that the city had no legal right to send him to the House of Industry and that it was obliged to provide him with lodging and food as he required. The Mayor replied to him emphatically and finally instructed Commissioner Laver to take him away. As McKnight left the Mayor’s office, the Commissioner called the police and ordered his arrest.
McKnight is said to have told Commissioner Laver that he and his wife were on relief distributed from the House of Industry in 1930 and that Mrs. McKnight returned to Ireland nine months ago.
Mayor Stewart and Commissioner Laver last night visited the hostels of the Department of Public Welfare. They found the hostels spotlessly clean, and in the rooms set aside for recreation, men in groups were singing the more familiar hymns. In one hostel, a clergyman sought the right to speak to the men. This was refused him by Commissioner Laver, who pointed out that any man living in city hostels could attend a church, and there were churches of all denominations in the heart of the city.
When Detectives Harold Waterhouse and Fred Storm asked McKnight what the trouble was, he is alleged to have accused Commissioner Laver, Captain Heron and the staff administering welfare work in the city of ‘grafting.’
Complains of Food Detective Waterhouse reported the prisoner was livng in the Wellington House. He said he refused to eat the food given in the House of Industry, claiming it was not fit to eat.
He complained bitterly of the food in the Wellington House, declaring that for the amount of money expended by the city to provide for the unemployed, those adminsitering the relief must be grafting. It was then, police allege, that he mentioned the names of the officials.
It is charged by police, McKnight has spent much time agitating inmates of the Wellington House and the House of Industry. Complaints have reached police of McKnight addressing those on relief, and making bitter remarks about food and living quarters for the needy.
Searching a room of a house in Dundas Street East, last night, police found asuitcase, which, they say, belongs to McKnight. It was correspondence from Irish papers in which McKnight had articles published concerning the Free State.
Police also claim to have established evidence that McKnight had been writing letters to different city appears protesting against the City Welfare Department. The articles were written, they said, under the signature of ‘Irishman.’ A number of obscene pictures are also alleged to have been found in the house.
When asked if it was true, his wife had returned to Ireland, McKnight told the detectives it was so, and it was then he announced his desire to be deported.
[AL; McKnight sounds like an awesome dude, fighting the good fight, making life miserable for the Mayor of Toronto and the god-botherers that ran the cities shelters for unemployed and homeless.]

Next stop downtown Dublin and our little boutique hotel - Cassedys. It is in the city center - and I had to get used to right hand driving again - and quickly. The hotel is quaint - it has the smallest car park, shower and elevator of any hotel we have ever stayed it. Don’t even think of trying to turn around in the shower. And using the elevator is an act of faith. You have to love old European cities. Dublin is beautiful! Oh, and the mirror is a tv - cool tech

Novelist David Mitchell on What he Does and How he Does it
I was in Ireland recently to interview two of the best novelists on the face of the planet. John Banville, in Dublin, and David Mitchell, in Cork. As a cost-cutting measure I decided to ask them both the same questions: What do you do? How do you do it? Why do you do it? And: Why does it matter? I got diametrically opposed answers.
So much for my cherished ambition of capturing definitive, unified explanations of what the best novelists (in this case) do, and how they do it at the dawn of the 21st century. David Mitchell is compelled to make narrative. Better and better narrative. He are his novels, in order:
Ghostwritten (1999)
Number9Dream (2001)
Cloud Atlas (2004)
Black Swan Green (2006)
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet (2010)
The Bone Clocks (2014)
Slade House (2015)
Utopia Avenue (2020)
Ghostwritten takes place all over the world - ‘from Okinawa to Mongolia to New York City’ and is told in interconnecting stories by nine different narrators. It won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize (best work of British literature written by an author under 35) and was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award. number9dream and Cloud Atlas were both shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. In 2003 David was selected as one of Granta's Best of Young British Novelists.’ In 2007 Time magazine included him among their 100 Most Influential People in The World. In 2018 he won the Sunday Times Award for Literary Excellence, given in recognition of a writer's entire body of work.
In other words, David is a best practitioner. He lives about an hour's drive from Cork. We met downtown for a taste of the city and a bite to eat. The better part of our afternoon was spent chatting about love and literature, and searching for a quiet place where we could clock our Biblio File best-practitioner conversation. Lovely, colourful city Cork. Tad noisy. We don’t talk much about specific books but we do attempt an "understanding" of the novel writing process in light of how David has gone about creating his wonderful Balzacian oeuvre.
Stay tuned for the Biblio File Back-story.

Well that was one hell of a trip. And of course it wouldn’t be official without a bullet point wrap-up:
That was my first time flying international and apparently this is the normal way of doing it, but I didn’t like leaving the east coast in the evening and landing in Europe first thing in the morning local time. I can’t sleep on planes, and then you have to play the “we can’t go to sleep yet or we won’t adjust” game. I feel like it’d be easier to leave in the morning East Coast time and land in the evening in Europe, but what do I know?
My perpetually-sensitive tooth in the top left started hurting during our layover in Charlotte and really kicked in during the main flight. When I woke up the second morning there, it was killing me and I had to get a root canal done. Miraculously there was a dentist within walking distance of the Air BnB and I was able to get a walk-in appointment and get it done, but it pretty much took me out the rest of the day. Had I not done it then though, it would’ve ruined the trip.
Dublin is way smaller and walkable than I expected.
A lot of people, even in urban areas, walk their dogs without leashes and I guess it’s not really an issue?
This was also an unusually “safe” feeling country to me. Like we only saw like 5 Gardaí (police) on the entire trip and I don’t think I noticed any of them carrying guns. I especially took notice of how there were a lot of women walking alone at night in Dublin and that just isn’t the kind of thing I’d expect to see in a big city over here, but I guess that says more about America than anything else.
Me and a buddy took turns driving. Driving on the other side of the road and the other side of the car was terrifying for like the first ten minutes and then I adjusted surprisingly quick after that. Adjusting back to American driving has also been a little tricky; I’m still drifting to the left more than normal.
This being a glorified road trip, we listened to the car radio a lot and besides the accents on the DJ’s and the obsession with Love Island (a reality TV show that’s currently running), you wouldn’t be able to distinguish a lot of stations from American stations. We heard “Señorita“ like 2 or 3 times a day.
Glendalough was neat but it was packed with groups Italian teenagers who kept shouting, “woooOOOOOAAAaaaaahhh” at each other. Some kind of summer camp thing.
We rented bikes to go around downtown Kilkenny and that lasted all of 15 minutes because we’re all pansies too afraid to ride bikes in traffic with cars.
Left my Quip toothbrush at the Kilkenny Air BnB, R.I.P.
Jerpoint Abbey was neat and we had the whole place to ourselves. We actually got their too early because the staff wasn’t ready to open yet.
Rock of Cashel was beautiful and windy as hell.
We spent hardly any time on highways during this trip because the GPS kept putting us on these backroads only wide enough for one car at a time. Apparently these backroads are all posted with an 80 km/h speed limit (50 mph), so the GPS assumes we’d be doing that speed, when in actuality we were going close to 35 km/h (~22 mph) because of all the sheep and hairpin turns and hills and stones and trees that just kinda take up half the already-tight roadway sometimes. We probably avoided tons of tolls this way though.
Speaking of which, we decided to taxi in to Kinsale one night and the taxi driver was actually speeding on these tiny little roads at night and I felt like I was going to die in that front passenger seat. When we decided to head back to the Air BnB, we got the same taxi driver and it was equally terrifying the second time around.
Knowing I have a fear of heights, my dumbass put the Blarney Castle on our itinerary and I had a full-blown anxiety attack up there. When I saw Andrew lean over the side to kiss the stone I almost passed out. The staff was like, “It’s your tur-” and I was already halfway down the staircase noping the fuck out of there.
The Ring of Kerry has some fantastic views and it was one of those “pictures can’t do this justice” moments.
Heard a lot of different spoken languages on this trip. If I had to guess, it was probably like 55% English, 20% French, 15% Italian, 9% European Spanish and 1% Irish. The only time I heard spoken Irish was between two Gen-X guys in an ice cream shop in Dingle. That said, the Irish language is written damn near everywhere, so I’m still glad I learned a little before this trip, even if I didn’t have a conversation in it.
Traditional Irish food is... good at providing sustenance and keeping you alive. Unrelated, the first thing we did after coming home yesterday was head straight to the best Indian restaurant in town for the spiciest dish I could handle.
The Slea Head Loop on the Dingle Peninsula was like a tighter, more compact version of the Ring of Kerry.
The Cliffs of Moher were cool, but I feel like it would’ve been more impactful for me had I seen them before the Ring of Kerry and Slea Head Loop. Then again, there’s probably only so much enjoyment I could get out of them (see bullet point above discussing fear of heights).
Galway was a neat town that definitely felt like it had the youngest population, I wish we’d spent more time there.
The drive out to Kylemore Abbey in the northwest in the morning was probably the most beautiful part of the trip for me. I was driving this day and couldn’t take pictures though.
The Abbey itself was beautiful and such a change of pace; it was a Victorian-era mansion and pretty much everything we’d seen up to this point was from the early middle ages so it was weird saying something was “only” 200 years old.
Looking back, only three things from our original itinerary got cut, which is not bad considering how much shit we got done.
Overall a fantastic trip, but I’m ready to just kick back and not do shit for the rest of the summer.

Chicago Area Sports Betting Scene: Day 3 - Winning!
Tumblr media
For the 3rd day of our trip, we travel further into Indiana than any man has before. We hit up both Ameristar Casino Hotel East Chicago and the FanDuel Sportsbook at Blue Chip Casino. The latter was about 50 miles from our hotel in Downtown Chicago. We had a blast, bet on some college football, and enjoyed some of the sights that Indiana has to offer.
The Hangover The day actually kicked off around midnight at Dublin’s Bar and Grill in the Gold Coast. We met up with a friend and advisor who lives in Chicago and it ended up being a late night. Safe to say the next day we were moving pretty slow. After a few cups of coffee, a bagel from Corey’s NYC Bagel Deli, and a few ibuprofen, we pulled it together and rented a car for our trip deep into Indiana.
I’m On a Boat Stop 1 - Ameristar Casino Hotel East Chicago: About 20 miles from downtown Chicago, partially in a boat sitting on Lake Michigan, lies the Ameristar Casino. This is the spot that hosted the inaugural Indiana sports bet placed by the one and only Mike Ditka.
Walking in, the first thing you see is the sportsbook to your left and a sports bar on your right. It’s not your traditional sportsbook, more like a window of sports tellers and kiosks. I quickly realized you make your bets at the window, then head on over to the sports bar to watch the games. Mission accepted.
There was a line, but it moved very quickly; it took maybe 5 minutes to make a bet. The teller was very friendly, helpful, and reminiscent of the old-time bookmakers you see in Vegas. I don’t remember what games I parlayed, but I know I lost pretty quickly. After placing the bet, we walked around the casino a bit. It was several stories of slot machines with very few windows, if any. Pretty sure we were on the boat at that point.
Sports Bar Meet Sportsbook We returned to the sports bar across from the book, Stadium Sports Bar and Grill. It was a pretty standard sports bar, with more TVs than you could count, and access to any game you would like to watch. Just make sure to let the hostess know what game you would like to watch so they can seat you in the right spot. From here, we enjoyed some college football and got some much-needed hydration. Then it was off to Stop 2 – FanDuel Sportsbook at Blue Chip Casino.
Stadium Sports Bar
Michigan City, Is That a Nuclear Cooling Tower, or Are You Just Happy to See Us? On the way into Michigan City, Indiana you are greeted by what looks like the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant from The Simpsons. Turns out it’s just a cooling tower for a coal and natural gas power plant, but you could have fooled me. Anyway, we drove by this thing as we headed towards FanDuel Sportsbook at Blue Chip Casino. No big deal.
The Blue Chip Casino is hoppin’ on a Saturday night for an area that we assumed was not too populated. As we walk in, again we are greeted by the sportsbook. FanDuel has fully branded this book, with a restaurant called “The Game” attached. There are both tellers and kiosks; the book offers stadium-style seating seen in traditional sportsbooks. It was pretty awesome. There was even a wasted guy that looked like Billy Bob from Varsity Blues who was about to get tossed out. A perfect atmosphere for sports and sports betting!
We planned on catching the late games back in Chicago, so instead of betting through the tellers, I opted to use the FanDuel Online Sportsbook. This app is available anywhere in the state of Indiana, so if I happen to hit, it would be a short drive to cash out the following day.
Runnin’ With the Devils I parlayed the following games:
Arizona State +13 vs Oregon – Its upset time, let’s do this! Bet against rival U of A by taking Utah -23.5 The Suns vs Timberwolves game was in the 3rd quarter, but that was no problem. I was able to take an “in-game” spread of Suns -2.5 to complete this parlay. Luckily, the spread adjusted to -1.5 as I was making this bet. This turned out to be key for me. We headed back to Chicago and enjoyed some beers while watching these west coast games. The Suns hit, winning by 2. Then the Sun Devils shocked the college football world by upsetting the Ducks. Finally, the Wildcats took a huge beating against the Utes, completing my home team parlay and making me a $150 winner.
The next morning, we made a quick trip to Indiana to get gas and collect my winnings. The money went right back into my PayPal account, no problem. Then we returned the car and enjoyed some Bears football from a solid local sports bar called Stocks and Blondes. All in all a very successful trip, deep into Indiana, to check out the available sports betting options nearby.

I’ve been planning to move to the Bay Area in California for a while, but have just realized that I might have a better chance of living adorably and getting a good career in the LA area. How do the LA area and the Bay Area compare, livability-wise?
I’ve lived in the Bay Area and suburbs of LA, so if anyone else wants to chime in, especially about LA, please do!
In parts of the Bay Area, like downtown Oakland, Berkeley, and SF, you might not need a car. In LA, you’re pretty much guaranteed to need a car. It’s much hotter in LA– your electricity and air conditioning bill will be higher.
Both the Bay Area and LA are huge, though! There’s a huge difference in price points between parts of each area.
The “Bay Area” extends east to Dublin/Pleasanton, South to Hayward, Fremont, and San Jose, North to Richmond, Walnut Creek, or the smaller towns in Contra Costa County, the Peninsula between SF and San Jose, and West to the outskirts of SF and Pacifica. The weather and public transport accessibility varies a lot! You can find more reasonable prices in:
Downtown Oakland
Parts of South/West Berkeley
West Oakland
Hayward/Fremont
Castro Valley
Parts of Dublin/Pleasanton
Richmond/El Cerrito
Apartment shares are also very popular throughout SF.
LA is also enormous. I think in general prices are cheaper compared to Bay Area. There are buses but they’re not great. My cousin lived in Studio City for a while and liked it. I know people that graduated from UCLA and lived in Westwood, super pricey but nice. I think LA has the best and most variety in Mexican and Asian food.
Both areas are diverse, generally liberal/progressive, busy, and surrounded by great natural beauty. Parts of both the Bay Area and LA have crime so be safe, and consider safety in addition to prices.
I think the most important things to consider should be
1. Where are you likely to get a job?
2. Will you want to share an apartment or rent a whole one yourself?
3. How much driving do you want to do?
4. What kind of weather do you prefer?
5. What kind of vibe do you want your city to have? There are lots of blogs and opinion pieces about this.
Good luck!– Mimi

Holiday Window Displays
One of the most famous scenes in holiday movie history happens in “A Christmas Story,” at the Higbee's department store window display.  It's here that Ralphie first spies the Red Ryder BB Gun that forms his Christmas dream and drives the narrative of the movie.
What many may not know, however, is that Higbee's was an actual department store in Cleveland, Ohio, known for their elaborate window displays.
Tumblr media
The then Vice-President of Higbee's, R. Bruce Campbell, allowed the moviemakers to film inside of the department store, and in fact offered up employees to feed the crew, style hair and do make-up.  Many employees served as extras, too.   But there was only one catch:  Campbell allowed all this only if there was a guarantee of no profanity in the movie.  Producers agreed, and that's why when 'The Old Man' works on the furnace the words are nonsensical, and also, of course, why Ralphie is heard to say, “FUDGE,” instead of the word he said he actually used.
Higbee's was the first department store in the greater Cleveland area, featuring 12 floors of shopping.  It was opened on Cleveland's Public Square in 1931 and remained open until 2002-when it was the last of the downtown department stores in Cleveland to close.
The store windows were a key feature in the Great Depression.  Today it's easy to underestimate the impact of such a display-with electric lights (still uncommon in many households in the '30s); animatronic figures; trains, tinsel, and more.
With the window being so iconic to the Cleveland area, to commemorate the Higbee's displays, in 2007 the corner window and front area of the department store reopened… as a modern Visitor Center as well as the Positively Cleveland (the city's convention and visitors bureau) headquarters.
Watch the clip below for more about Higbee's and Christmas.

Window displays are as much a part of the holidays as Santa himself; you'll find the most elaborate ones in some of the biggest cities in the world.   During the holiday season, some stores' creations are literal works of art.
Places like Galeries Lafayette in Paris and Selfridges in London,   as well as entire blocks of Fifth Avenue in NYC-spare no expense in making some really special displays.

  Bergdorf Goodman, New York City
The Bergdorf Goodman window features actual desserts-licorice carousels, cotton candy poodles, candy cane dresses, and more.
See it at Fifth Avenue & 58th Street, New York, New York.

London's most famous department store illustrates Christmas rituals, like Bettega Veneta's “Unwrap the Day,” and Dolce & Gabbana's “Leftover Fridge” (Pictured).
See it at 87-135 Brompton Rd., London
Tumblr media
      Le Bon Marché, Paris
This year Le Bon Marché unveiled pine tree-themed window displays, with forests adorning the interior and toys tucked under them.  See it all in the City of Light at 24 Rue de Sèvres, 7th Arrondissement.  And don't worry about the employees dressed as elves- they're there to help you!
Tumblr media
        Brown Thomas, Dublin
Broadway Musicals are the inspiration for Dublin's luxury department store Brown Thomas.  Entitled, “It's Showtime,” the store windows each set a different scene from stage & screen.  See dancers at the Moulin Rouge, a girl selling cigarettes at a theater box office, and more when you visit Brown Thomas at 88-95 Grafton St., Dublin

Amazon-linked developer eyes big revamp of old Fremont tech campus
Veteran Texas real estate developer with links to Amazon is eyeing a wide-ranging redevelopment of an aging tech campus in Fremont, city documents show.
Hines, one of the nation's biggest real estate developers, has proposed the replacement of a tech complex on Milmont Drive between Dixon Land Road and Kato Road, according to records on file with Fremont city officials.
A modern industrial center would sprout in place of the aging tech buildings on Milmont Drive in Fremont, the city Planning Department documents show.
In April 2021, Hines bought the existing three-building Dixon Landing Research Park, which has addresses of 49000, 49036, and 49086 Milmont Drive, according to property records on file with the Alameda County Recorder's Office.
Hines paid $47 million for the three-building complex, the county documents show.
The buildings total a combined 209,300 square feet, according to a brochure circulated by Lee & Associates, a commercial real estate firm that was marketing the complex at the time of the property purchase.
The property is near Interstate 880 and is a few freeway exits from the vast Tesla Motors vehicle factory in Fremont.
Hines intends to demolish the three existing buildings on the site and replace them with a brand-new structure.
The new industrial building, if the city approves the project and Hines builds it, would total 265,600 square feet, the Fremont city records show.
The finished project would be a building shell.
In February of this year, Hines leased to Amazon a huge data center in Hayward that totals 278,500 square feet.
Hines in recent years has been an active player in Bay Area commercial real estate.
The Hines real estate firm has plunked down well over $1 billion to buy an array of office and research buildings in the Bay Area.
These are among the properties that Hines has purchased in recent years.
A huge data center on a prime site at 150 S. First St. in downtown San Jose, $59.6 million, December 2021.
The PG&E headquarters complex in San Francisco, $800 million, 2021.
Dublin Corporate Center in Dublin, $108.9 million.
Santa Clara Towers in Santa Clara, $195 million.
Santa Clara tech and research center on Bassett Street, $107.1 million.
Santa Clara office building with Apple as a tenant on Patrick Henry Drive, $68 million.
In recent years, uncertainties have arisen over the future use of office space due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and a fuzzy picture for brick-and-mortar retail resulting from a shift to online shopping.
As a result, property owners and developers have scouted for redevelopment opportunities at an array of sites.
Tech-oriented manufacturing, life science, biotech and laboratory projects have become popular replacements for numerous commercial buildings and sites ink the Bay Area.

Anon, I wanna thank you cause I agree with like all of this!!!
In fact here’s a good list to expand on more of this:
( Train AU Beginnings )
The Train AU takes place in a town much like the ones you would find in southern Ireland. I have family over there and the scenery is so beautiful, the train rides I took to visit all my cousins were some of the most peaceful trips I’ve had. I want you guys to imagine a place with wide open fields and close-knit neighbors. But also cobblestoned city streets with more places to walk than drive. I want you guys to picture warm nature and stone fences.
Altea Academy is a private institution located in the modern downtown district of Finch (a made up town based on Dublin). The high school caters to talented and wealthy students and offers them a college preparatory education. Most of its students are child prodigies and scholarshiped athletes. The school itself is very reminiscent of Trinity University in Dublin. Due to its prominent nature, the school is known for being uptight, but its students are known for being quite troublesome. But since their students are regarded as the “best” the school rarely punishes them. If they did the child’s important angry parents would be breathing down the principal’s neck. The school’s football team is known locally and statewide, they have always dominated the competition.
Students of Altea:
Takashi Shirogane - Team captain and quarterback of Altea’s Black Lions. Shiro is seen by teachers as a straight-A senior and perfect student. But his friends and fellow students see him as tired soul. He stays up late to do homework and runs on nothing but willpower and energy drinks. He is constantly making bad decisions when his friends are not with him. Bad decisions include: Random piercings his current hairstyle, and regrettable tattoos. He is a huge space nut and can talk to you all day about the stars, their constellations, and their meanings. His affinity for stars has earned him the nickname Space Dad. He’s an Instagram legend thanks to his friend Matt and is sought after by every guy and girl in the district.
Katie Holt - A computer science prodigy, Katie was able to skip three grades and at age 14 she sits with her brother in the senior class. Due to the strict dress code, Katie was forbidden from wearing the men’s uniform and is constantly writing emails to the faculty about how unfair it is to deny her pants. She may look like she is diligently typing notes but Katie sits in the back of the class for a reason. She’s either hacking the school’s internet and database or playing video games, yet whenever called she can answer the question correctly. Unlike Shiro, the school knows Katie is not as sweet as she looks. Along with her brother, Keith, and secretly Shiro, she has pulled off countless school pranks.
Matt Holt - An angel in the eyes of teachers and best friends with Shiro. He pretends to scold his sister for her troublesome pranks when called to the office, but it’s all an act. Computer science and mathematics prodigy Matthew Holt is the face of several school adds along with Shiro. Due to his father’s strong government ties, the school can hardly punish his sister and thus could never touch him. Matt is Shiro’s lifeline making sure he studies, supplies him with Monster, and treats him to breakfast every once in a while.
Keith Kogane - A reckless punk in the eyes of teachers and staff. But a school icon none the less. No matter how many classes he sleeps through he always aces them. He’s on the football team with Shiro and has scored most of the school record-breaking touchdowns. He’s a golden boy at everything and anything and the teachers can’t do anything about his reckless behavior without incurring the wrath of his uncle, CEO of Galra Industries and Sciences, Zarkon. Keith’s parents died when he was very young. His mother’s brother took him in and raised him alongside his own son Lotor. He loves Keith like his own son and bought him the house his parent’s lived in on the outskirts of the quiet town of Creek.
(Lotor goes to another elite high school in Finch where the football team is co-ed. Lotor is the quarterback and captain and the girls he leads are hella strong. Their team is usually ranked third in the district and is constantly trying to one-up Altea. )
West Creek High is a local high school in the much calmer town of Creek, about an hour train ride from Finch. The school itself is a community high school, lots of local kids go here. It’s an old building with laxed old rules, and well-behaved students. The school’s pride is its football team, most kids go to West Creek just to make the team. They are ranked second in the county. In Creek, the streets are more for walking and less for driving. There is a local Somoan bakery that makes fresh pastries every morning and next to them is a cafe. The owners are good friends and together bring in business for both shops.
Students of West Creek High
Hunk Garret- A lovable sweet boy with a heart of gold and the body of a god. Hunk is the school’s famed linebacker, he’s a hulking beast on the field and could break a normal high schooler in two. But Hunk couldn’t hurt a fly and only joined the team for the scholarship so he could save his mother money. He helps run the local Somoan bakery with her and is looking to take over the business when he graduates. He’s best friends with Lance and has been since pre K. They have matching wristbands, the one Hunk wears is Lance’s favorite color while the one Lance wears is Hunk’s favorite color. Sometimes he and Lance stay up hella late playing video games with their online friend Pidge.
Allura - The resident hottest girl in school, Allura is rather down to earth and sweet once people get to know her. She runs a fashion blog and dominates Instagram with gorgeous selfies. Although her father is the CO-CEO to Galra, and she could have gone to any school she wanted, she chose West Creek out of all the fancy prep schools. She thought the homier the neighborhood the kinder the friends. She became friends with Hunk and Lance because she frequently eats at Hunk’ s bakery. Lance is her wingman and always lets her know if a guy at a party is trouble. She currently has a crush on this guy who keeps showing up on her insta feed. He’s got a fringe of bleached hair and piercings. His friend’s feed is filled with pictures of the said bleached boy doing hilarious stunts and sweaty football pics. It’s a blessing.
Coran Smythe - Is the schools most eccentric and loved history professor. He somehow has a strange unheard historical fact for every era they cover in class and often judges the textbooks on getting certain events wrong or the author being completely off base. Not only is he a great teacher but he is also a great coach. He coaches the Creek Creatures football team. The mascot is some kind of cryptid, the current costume resembles Mothman.
Lance Sanchez - A straight-A student and all around excitable guy. He wants to be an astronaut, or a fighter pilot, or something to do with the sky. Lance loves the idea of flying and wants to get his piloting license when he graduates. Lance lives on the outskirts of Creek where his family owns a farm with horses, cows, and lots or sheep. So his mom makes him take the train to make sure he gets to school on time. He’s always been a little bit of a daydreamer and is often caught zoning out in class.
The train ride from Creek to Finch is an hour and a half, the train consists of mostly leisure cars where you can sit at a table and be treated to a snack trolley. Otherwise, you can sit in the many standing cars with minimal seating and more standing room.
