The structures on the site date back to the mid 12th to the mid 13th century.
The former seat of the Kings of Munster, the land was donated to the church after the Norman invasion in the early 12th century. The site is rich with history and in fact is somewhat unique in-so-far as its past has met the present in the form of a still active graveyard on the property. If I recall correctly, there is still one person still alive that has a plot waiting for them upon their earthly demise.
