Why Dubai is the best place to live and work

Historical fiction for fans of American Girl/Dear America

Thinking back to the OC post I recently made... Some of the doll stories I’d like to see are related to my own life experiences, but not all of them! I’ve gotten a lot of inspiration and daydreams from other book series. (Example: The Dear America book “Color Me Dark” is the reason I would love to see a Great Migration doll.)

Historical fiction has always been my favorite genre since I was old enough to read. In the late 90s and early 2000s, there were so many educational series at the library to keep me entertained. (Though I absolutely had a Babysitters Club phase too.) I found a lot of discontinued books are still available digitally for Kindle/Nook or through Thriftbooks. If you want to find something new for your young reader (or yourself) or experience some nostalgia you might have forgotten, read on!

Dear Canada/My Story (UK)

Like the more well-known Dear America, each book is a diary written from the perspective of a young girl. I believe Australia and New Zealand have done the same, but I haven’t been able to find any of those books online for Americans to buy. A lot of the Dear Canada books are available for the Nook app (through Barnes & Noble) and My Story ebooks can be downloaded for Kindle. 

My personal favorites, copied from Wikipedia: (I love stories about “found family” and have always been fascinated by the TItanic)

Victorian Workhouse: The Diary of Edith Lorriner, London, 1871

Mysteries through History

An American Girl series that was discontinued in 2004. These books cover more mature, darker topics than the main series. The AG wiki recommends them for early teenagers rather than pre-teen girls. Quite a few are available on Amazon for Kindle. 

I haven’t read as many of these but I have enjoyed:

Mystery on Skull Island by Elizabeth McDavid Jones (Charleston, SC 1721)

The Strange Case of Baby H by Kathryn Reiss (San Francisco, 1906)

Girls of Many Lands

Another discontinued series from American Girl, these books covered historical events across the world, from Ireland to India. The only one I’ve read is Minuk: Ashes in the Pathway, which takes place in Alaska in 1890 when the main character meets American missionaries for the first time. (Just expand her story and move her over to the historical doll line, it’d be so good!) 

I found my copy at a library sale. These are easy to find at used bookstores, both online and off.

Journey to America by Clare Pastore

There are 3 books in this miniseries. I’ve read the first two and own the Irish one:

Fiona McGilray's Story: A Voyage from Ireland in 1849 

Aniela Kaminski's Story: A Voyage from Poland During World War II

Chantrea Conway's Story: A Voyage From Cambodia In 1975

The books aren’t available in digital form, but you can find copies under ~$5 on Thriftbooks or eBay. 

American Diaries by Kathleen Duey

I honestly can’t remember the quality or reading level of these books, but I distinctly remember the series being on the tip of my tongue for the longest time, before I came across one online. I remember child-me curled up in her favorite library chair, reading the Summer MacCleary one, which was about an indentured servant in colonial Virginia.

Some unique eras available on Thriftbooks: Puritan Massachusetts, a French/Shoshone girl in 1820s Idaho, California gold rush, Civil War Louisiana, reconstruction-era Mississippi, late-1800s Texas, 1920s Hollywood

American Sisters by Laurie Lawlor

Another series I can remember reading, but the details have escaped my mind. These stories focus on families rather than individual girls. Available cheaply on Thriftbooks. 

Some subjects include: Early 1700s Boston, late 1700s Kentucky, Civil War-era Colorado, 1900s Asian immigration to California

Betsy-Tacy Series by Maud Hart Lovelace

This book series isn’t quite the same format as the others, but I had to include it because it was my favorite series as a kid. Published in the 1940s, it revolves around the lives of Betsy and her two best friends as they grow up in Victorian/Edwardian Minnesota. (My home state!) A unique aspect of the series is how each book gets longer and more complex as Betsy ages. The first book starts when she’s 5 and the last ends when she marries in her early 20s. All are available for Kindle but I also have paperback copies. They were reprinted in the early 2000s so I’ve found some at thrift stores. 

Surprise surprise, the used dolls I bought to fix up will be turned into Betsy, Tacy, and Tib! I’m so excited to start working on them.

At 87, there’s still the air of a slightly mischievous child surrounding Dame Judi Dench. Take her hooting uproariously as she recalls how she decided to get a tattoo to mark her 81st birthday. ‘Well, it was my daughter Fint’s [actor Finty Williams] idea. We’d had lunch and were walking up St Martin’s Lane and she said, “Now! Let’s do it!”.’ So Judi had ‘carpe diem’ inked onto her wrist. ‘It didn’t hurt,’ she exclaims, in those deliciously familiar tones – half gravel, half satin. ‘Well, it depends on what your level of pain is – but it didn’t hurt me.’

As such a renegade spirit, she may be one of our most beloved actors, but she loathes being endlessly labelled a ‘national treasure’. ‘I hate it, it’s stuffy!’ she cries, her sapphire-blue eyes flashing contemptuously. ‘It sounds like you’re in a museum with the fossils.’

It wasn’t until her sixties that she conquered Hollywood, winning her first Oscar at 63 for her Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love. She’s had six more nominations for, among others, Iris, Mrs Brown and Notes on a Scandal. Films such as the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel franchise and her part as M in eight (‘actually nine, because I did a morning’s work on Spectre’) James Bonds made her an international superstar.

Now, she’s added to her lengthy greatest hits list with a star turn in Belfast, directed and written by Kenneth Branagh; a funny and deeply moving fictionalised (but not too fictionalised) account of his boyhood in Northern Ireland, where his close-knit family is torn apart by the Troubles.

After months of lockdown, she was absolutely overjoyed to be back on a film set. ‘It was a real release!’ she exclaims. ‘Ken had organised it, so it was unbelievably carefully done. Every single member of the crew was tested every single day, nobody overlapped with anybody, so you had no fear. But how wonderful seeing people again.’

Yet one subject fills her with gloom: ageing. ‘I don’t recommend it,’ she says vehemently. I had a frightful fall not long ago. I tripped over the carpet and there was nobody in the house, and I was lying on the ground unable to get up for half an hour. I have a wonderful parrot who kept saying, “What are you doing? What are you doing?” This is when you need a very convenient parrot who would phone somebody but she didn’t. After half an hour I just got up.’ It sounds scary. Does she have panic buttons installed? ‘No, no, no! Nothing like that.’

During lockdown, she was diverted by University Challenge and the Channel 5 documentary Our Yorkshire Farm about shepherdess Amanda Owen and her nine children. ‘I just love it!’ It turns out that Judi had hoped to have six children. ‘I wanted a house full of them. I would have loved to have had that. But it didn’t happen, alas. I didn’t get married until I was 36, so I left it a bit late. I wouldn’t have minded not working, not at all.’ Instead, the daughter of a doctor and a stage wardrobe mistress from York ended up creating a different kind of extended family, when they moved in 1995 from their London home to a house near Stratford with her widowed mother and Michael’s parents. ‘My first dream had always been a family community. All our parents jumped at it, so we bought a house and all lived together with Fint as a little girl. We had all our high days and holidays there, both our Mas died there. It was lovely,’ she sighs.

The List of Good Things

Hello everyone. I hope you’re all having a good day  ❤️ I know many of you are feeling pretty helpless and hopeless right now, but you should know that not everything happening is bad. This is a list of good news stories that I have been gathering for months. I wouldn’t be able to write every single one of them its own post, but I will choose a few of them and write about them separately. 

-  Bees Are Thriving As Pollution Plummets and Environmental Conditions Improve: as the world goes on lockdown, the bees are thriving. More so, people have started taking notice and are becoming more aware of nature and what’s going on in it.

-  Milan announces ambitious scheme to reduce car use after lockdown: Milan will introduce one of Europe’s most ambitious plans, changing street space from cars to cycling and walking, following corona-virus crisis. 

-  Humpback Whales Have Made a Remarkable Recovery, Giving Us Hope for the Planet:  Many humpback whale populations, previously devastated by commercial whaling, are making a comeback, and it has nothing to do with the corona-virus. 

- A global coalition of 42 faith institutions are divesting from fossil fuels, calling for a just recovery that puts people and planet at its heart. -  Oxford University will be divesting from fossil fuels and align to net-zero strategies. 

- Portugal is preparing several billion-dollar clean energy initiatives and projects for post-coronavirus future: Portugal is aiming to leap, rather than tip-toe, out of their lockdown initiatives by launching a series of clean energy projects that could generate 5.5 billion euro in European energy investment.

- Ecosia is planting trees for NHS hospitals: they teamed up with two tree-planting charities in the UK and launched #GrowYourLove, to plant trees around NHS hospitals up and down the country. (Haven’t heard about Ecosia? You should try it out!)

-  Community-funded energy projects put power in the hands of the people and are helping transform the UK energy market. These are five of the Thrive Renewables projects going on right now. 

-  Revolutionary food waste app ‘Gander' is a huge success: award-winning Gander app, created to reduce food waste, has transformed the spending habits of Northern Ireland shoppers with a significant soar in downloads and increased sales of yellow stickered foods since its launch last August.

-  White-tailed eagles, Britain’s largest bird of prey has returned to the English skies for the first time in 240 years.

- America’s renewable sources including solar, wind and hydropower generated more electricity than coal-based plants every single day for 40 days, a new report says. 

-  Trinity College‘s front lawns are set to be wild-flower meadow: after the public overwhelmingly supports bee-friendly proposal in an online vote.

-  Court blocked oil drilling in Peruvian Amazon: A judge in Peru has blocked a proposed oil drilling project in the Peruvian Amazon that threatened to damage the ecosystem and the health of isolated Indigenous peoples.

- Solar and onshore wind power are now the cheapest new sources of electricity in at least two-thirds of the world’s population, further threatening the two fossil-fuel stalwarts -- coal and natural gas.

-  Luxembourg is the first country to make all public transport free.

- 10 billion trees are to be planted in Pakistan with the help of 60,000 workers unemployed because of the Coronavirus.

- Solar power in India has just had a major boost. The country’s government has announced funding that will enable 2 million farmers to invest in irrigation pumps powered by solar photovoltaic arrays.

- Retired politician got 152 million mangrove trees planted in just 10 years: Ever since the scientific community began to encourage the planting of trees to ‘re-wild’ previously lost forest ecosystems to respond to climate change, some very determined members of the human race have rolled up their sleeves and produced remarkable results.

- Protecting trees, particularly old-growth trees in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest, is a win for local communities and for the climate: federal judge rejected a sweeping logging plan that would have spanned a project area of 1.8 million acres in the Tongass National Forest in Prince of Wales Island in southeast Alaska. Those trees are “key to combatting climate change” and have been protected. 

- Consideration of the climate crisis will be front and center in all of New Zealand's major policy decisions. The new rule means that any new proposal before the government that aims either to reduce emissions or has a collateral damage effect of raising emissions will need to go through a climate-impact assessment before it can be considered, according to The Guardian.

-  UK’s CO2 emissions have fallen 29% over the past decade.

- More and more academic institutions are setting Ecosia as the default search engine across campus computers: Ecosia on Campus first started as an idea between three students in September 2018. Since then, student internet searches have financed the planting of over 135,000 trees. There are now seven universities worldwide that have made Ecosia the primary search engine on campus – a number set to rise as more motivated students join the movement.

- Coal from Guaíba, Latin America’s largest open-pit mine, will stay in the ground: 166 million tons of coal and 4.5 gigatons of CO₂ will stay in the ground. This is thanks to a partnership between climate justice groups, a local Indigenous association, 350.org Brazil, Arayara Institute and the Coal Observatory.

-  Seoul is putting solar panels on all public buildings and 1 million homes: By 2022, every public building and 1 million homes in the city are set to be powered by solar.

-  Food waste falls by 7% per person in three years in UK: The UK is making significant steps in reducing its food waste, with total food waste levels falling by 480,000 tonnes between 2015 and 2018 – a 7% reduction per person and equivalent of filling London’s Royal Albert Hall ten times.

-  Scotland is on track to move its energy sector to 100 percent renewables by t he end of this year. 

-  All new rooftops must be covered in plants or solar panels in France: Frances’s new “green roof” law is cooling city streets, cutting heating and air conditioning costs, reducing water and air pollution, providing local, organic food and ecosystems for birds, bees and hundreds of other species.

-  Madacascar is planting 60 million trees in ambitious drive inspired by its president. 

-  Scientists find extremely rare blue bee that was feared to be extinct. 

-  5 critically endangered Red Wolf pups were born at North Carolina Zoo.

-  Deserted Thai beaches lure rare turtles to build most nests in 20 years.

- These  23 Organizations are eliminating food waste during COVID-19 crisis.

Writing: So I've recovered somewhat from my NaNoWriMo fugue state and what I have, at 63,000 words, is a first draft without a final act. I really want a complete first draft for the New Year, though, so I've set myself a new goal for December - a much more sedate 20,000.

The NaNoWrimo website actually lets you set add a new word count goal after November, so that's what I did. Having a daily word count goal and a little chart that shows my progress seemed to really motivate me to stay on track last month so I thought I'd continue the habit. I also bought a subscription to Scrivener as a present to myself (Nano winners get a 50% off deal which I took full advantage of!)

If all goes well, I shall have a complete novel by Jan 1st -which I shall completely deconstruct and put back together in the New Year:P

RL: They've moved from full lockdown to level 3 in Ireland for the holiday period and I'm at last freed from my 5 kilometer travel limit. It's apparently going to be really cold this weekend but I still think I'm going to venture out to Howth for a bit of sea air, a visit to the market, and a coffee not made by me! I'm going to avoid the shopping centres and city centre though because Christmas shopping can be hardcore here and while the R numbers are down, they're far from eradicated.

Roll on the New Year and my vaccination shot. I can't wait to be free again.

Mina Tindle Interview: A Natural Frame

The release of Mina Tindle’s SISTER last October was supposed to be accompanied by an ambitious live show and an hour-long film made up of visuals for its nine captivating songs. After all, these sorts of artistic deep dives are what the project of Pauline de Lassus is all about. But when it became clear last summer--the summer of COVID-19--that neither could be easily achieved or achieved any time soon, de Lassus let go of her inhibitions. Recorded and filmed during a specific time last summer in France when the virus was more under control and travel/lockdown restrictions were somewhat lifted, The LFO/Blogothèque Sessions present stripped-back versions of some songs from SISTER as well as a track that didn’t make the cut. With help from Kate Stables (This Is The Kit), de Lassus’ husband Bryce Dessner (The National), and David Chalmin, and in collaboration with French production company La Blogothèque, de Lassus presents the songs in new ways. The percussive gallop of “Fire and Sun” presents itself more in Dessner’s guitar in the live version. Vocal harmonies and guitar take the place of beats and strings on “Belle Pénitence”. A cover of Sufjan Stevens’ “Give A Little Love”, whose album version features Stevens and his quintessentially Reichian arpeggios, is all about the harmonies between de Lassus and Stables. And “Indigo”, never recorded, is buoyed by Dessner’s spritely, finger-picked guitar.

As much as these sessions have the feel of a fleeting moment--that should the group have decided to play them on, say, a different day, that they would take another shape--they’re also very much a product of place. For one, it wouldn’t have happened had de Lassus been somewhere without access to a studio, let alone with lesser restrictions. The accompanying videos--just as much a part of the release as the audio--were shot from de Lassus and Dessner’s new home in the South of France, where they moved from Paris with their child. The almost mystical, beautiful quality of the surroundings makes me think of what de Lassus told me over the phone last month about “the fantasy of having a live show.” With a camera capturing moments where the group decided to just go for it, it’s got that live quality, but like the best “live albums,” make you hungry to experience the music in person for yourself.

The LFO/Blogothèque Sessions was released on Friday via 37d03d, the “people” label. (“They give their artists a lot of freedom and love,” de Lassus said. “They’re amazing...I don’t think I would have put the record out if it wasn’t with them.”) Read our conversation about adapting the songs to a new setting, edited for length and clarity.

Since I Left You: Did you always want to do stripped-down versions of these songs, or was the occasion of lockdown restrictions being lifted the inspiration?

Pauline de Lassus: Something I love doing is having nice visuals or working on videos. I had a big project for this record, a film the length of the 9 songs--I wanted to make a movie. But it was a totally different object, an homage to [Norman] McLaren. I wanted to do a one-hour long video. Everything was cancelled because of COVID, and I ended up doing all the videos myself. Do it yourself, like back in the days. I chose women I love dancing, and it was nice to work on. But it’s really nice when it’s professional. I knew there would not be any shows for this record--maybe in a few years. So I had the idea of trying to capture that. I did it with basically family--Kate Stables, Bryce is my husband, and David is a really close friend. Doing it in the safest environment possible. It was really nice.

SILY: Was it natural to strip down these songs? How did you adapt them to the setting?

Pauline: We just played them. We kind of worked on it with Bryce a bit. He’s really good at that. When I got the chance to tour with The National, I saw they record an album and know all the songs, because they work on it for months. We did maybe four days of rehearsal in Paris to start the tour, and that was it, and after four days, they played the songs over and over. There were like 50 of them. By the end they went on stage and just played the music. I remember thinking, “Woah.” My way of doing it would be to overplay or overwork them to try to get the right version instead of just playing the music. It’s more the fact that they play it a lot that it turned into something they like. Because these songs were so minimal, we didn’t have to sing too much. 

SILY: It seems like certain qualities of the songs you kept but achieved them in a different way, like the forward gallop in the drum beat on the SISTER version of “Fire and Sun”, you get more in the guitar here, whereas for “Belle Pénitence”, the emphasis is more on the vocal harmonies and the guitar than on the strings and the beats like on SISTER. Did that, too, kind of come naturally from just playing them?

Pauline: I think we just played them. I love making records. It’s one of the things I love doing the most. I don’t mind if it takes 5 years, and I don’t mind a quick record, but working in the studio is a really different process. You can add all the things you want. It’s kind of magic. These days, it’s not on tape, so you can erase the minute after. It’s really an experimental place.

Playing them [live], I have one of the greatest musicians and guitar players in Bryce. He can get the essence of the song really easily. And the soul of Kate, we love singing together; every time, something happens. I think it was a way to sing with more space. We weren’t trying to mimic any existing version, which is great, because I’ve been touring with Mina Tindle for years where the expectation was I am trying to mimic the record. The up-tempo song had to be up-tempo. This time, it was extremely free. It was really nice, because what I needed was really little. Two instruments, two singers, that’s it. We wanted to play them acoustic, which is sometimes a challenge.

SILY: What you said about playing them with more space really stood out to me on the EP version of “Indian Summer”. You have this piano ballad as opposed to something that’s more all over the place.

Pauline: I love both! In the past, I’ve been slow at making records. Sometimes, I just have the demo, and it’s the first draft, and it’s good. That’s why I like the idea of having a live recording, because it has to be straight and honest right away. In a way, I feel like you interpret it differently, also, because it’s one shot. Maybe we had two shots, but there was no editing.

SILY: How did you get around not having Sufjan’s presence on “Give A Little Love”?

Pauline: When I sing that song, I always try to be at the level of his song. He’s the sweetest person, so he couldn’t care less--he’d give me freedom to adapt the song [even] metal or AC/DC style. He’s a free mind. It’s sweet because I’m more shy when it’s my songs, but I love covering songs that I love. [Feist and I] did this tribute to Lhasa de Sela, who is one of my favorite singers ever. She passed away when she was really young. We had a love for her music and ended up making a show that we played in London and France and Ireland and Berlin, where we were covering her songs. It was one of my favorite things to do. It’s an ode to my love to music, whereas when I sing my songs, I feel more shy or intimidated to open up. Sometimes, I really wonder why I open my heart. When it’s someone else, I feel happy they’re connecting.

SILY: What’s the story behind the new song on this release, “Indigo”?

Pauline: “Indigo” is the black sheep of the record. It was many people’s favorite song, but I had 5 versions of it I couldn’t choose from. When I ended up not putting it on SISTER, I was really happy. I felt relieved. I didn’t know where to put it. I tried to mix it with different people, but it was never right. Kate had sung that song with me many times, so she knew it, and this was the right way to do it. I felt totally fine presenting that version. This EP is a way to free up any vision. It is what it is. That’s why it was on that record, because we really wanted to sing that song together. It’s a story of a separation, if I remember correctly. Losing each other. I remember being obsessed with the idea of losing someone you really love. It was not my personal life; fortunately, I was doing pretty okay. But having a kid is a total volcano in your life, and I was looking at many people around me who seemed to not be okay, living through that experience, so it was a song about how you can tear apart when something’s supposed to make you closer.

SILY: You could have a whole rarities release of different versions of “Indigo” as your next release.

Pauline: Yeah. I don’t think anybody would like to listen to it. [laughs] The same song four times.

SILY: What’s the story behind the cover art of this release?

Pauline: It’s Kate and I dancing. We were really happy because we did [the recording] in two days. We had an extra day with her, so we did some stuff for her, and we were just dancing. There was a huge storm--the weather where we are is crazy. It can rain and be super shiny in twenty minutes. So we had this crazy summer storm and started dancing as if it was a mirror and improvising the dancing. We are not dancers. [laughs] But we had a lot of fun. This red window is the typical colors of the architecture in the region. It’s actually in my house. I’ve already taken so many pictures of people inside and outside that window, because the window reflects the landscape behind. It’s so beautiful. It’s like a natural frame, and whatever you put inside, it’s kind of logical.

SILY: Are you planning or able to do live shows or live streams?

Pauline: As I told you, I intended to do way bigger or ambitious thing at first, because I kind of hate videos for music--or I never watch them. For me, the music is not more important, but enough. So when you do videos, it’s nice when you have something unique. We couldn’t do that movie I was thinking about, so putting money into trying to make a beautiful live performance was it. I was happy with it.

A livestream, maybe under certain conditions, but it’s a really strange period where even more than before, while I’m happy to give and share what I’m creating, but privacy is more something I’m into these days.

SILY: Livestreams do have that bedroom aspect.

Pauline: It’s kind of an exhibitionist thing I’ve never had. I’ve always felt conflicted about it with social media. It’s like opening your house to people. I’m not judging people who do it--you can do it really healthily--but I don’t feel comfortable. So far, I’ve said no to a lot of stuff.

SILY: Some of the best ones I’ve seen have skirted the home recording feel because they’re recorded at an actual venue and professionally edited. It’s not really live, but it’s at least for the time being something a little bit in between.

Pauline: We should look forward to live shows coming back, not necessarily doing bad performances. Like with social media, we now see 30-second music extracts, like on TikTok. The quality is not getting better. We don’t have to share everything the universe is offering to us. Sometimes it’s better to hold back and wait. That’s totally my point, though. Of course, when you’re in your 20s, you should do whatever you want to do, but at this point in my life, I don’t feel the urge to constantly express myself. I’m just old, you know? [laughs]

SILY: What else have you been up to lately?

Pauline: I’m doing a lot of things not related to music. I’m illustrating a book that’s more for children. It’s around music. I’m busy spending my days painting and drawing, and I love it. It’s creative, but it’s nice to take a break from music. The final collection is gonna be really cool.

SILY: Anything you’ve been listening to, watching, or reading lately that’s caught your attention?

Pauline: Besides two children’s books a week. You can see there’s a big switch in illustrations for kids books. You can spend a whole day at the library in the kid’s section. It’s so impressive and beautiful.

My knowledge in feminism was really bad, so the last 6 months, I’ve been reading everything I can on the subject and listening to podcasts. It’s basically my routine. I thought I wasn’t feminist, but I am.

We are seeing the difference that social distancing can make in this epidemic: look at the difference between European countries that have and have not shut down.

Virology Corner

Today’s topic is recovery from COVID-19: how do we know that you’re recovered and that you’re no longer shedding the virus?

We know from Chinese studies that in people who recover clinically (i.e. when they stop feeling like death’s ass) they can shed virus for up to 20 days from the onset of symptoms. People who die shed virus until after they die.

Fortunately, we have a way of testing for active virus shedding: the same tests we use to detect viral genes at the start of an infection work to show that you are clear of infection!

This is super useful to know because we do not always test for cure in infectious diseases - for example, we don’t usually test flu patients for cure.

It’s pretty clear that when people have two negative tests separated by 24 hours, they are considered “recovered”. That’s the definition the WHO uses, and the one I will use here unless I specify otherwise.

Question Tuesday

Today’s question comes from @dasyuridae: “does the UK’s response make sense?”

HELL NO it does not

That’s the short answer

The long answer is that herd immunity works as a prevention strategy in certain types of infections, and this is not yet that kind of pandemic.

We use herd immunity to prevent against diseases when we have a vaccine for them. By immunizing everyone who can be immunized, we prevent those who cannot be immunized from getting and/or spreading the disease. This is essential to protecting people from things like measles and the flu.

If humans are the only host for a particular virus, we can even use herd immunity to totally delete the disease from planet earth. Ask smallpox. Oh wait. You can’t. We deleted it. (except for the highly secure samples in Russia and the USA, shh)

COVID-19 likely has a reservoir in animals so we can’t delete it, but once we have a vaccine, herd immunity will be awesome for preventing further outbreaks.

To have herd immunity now, likely upwards of 90% of the UK would need to get the virus and recover, thereby developing immunity. That is a bad idea because no health system can handle that.

A better way to do this is what most other countries are doing, mitigating spread by isolating affected people, offering lots of testing, and quarantining areas with lots of asymptomatic spread.

In conclusion, fuck Boris Johnson, he doesn’t understand how epidemiology works and that’s gonna hurt/kill a lot of people.

I have two elderly grandparents in the UK. Fuck Boris.

Social distancing can be really crappy for people who are prone to feeling isolated. Try to schedule time to hang out virtually, especially if you’re stuck at home alone. I highly recommend the Jackbox party games to stream over Discord, or tabletop RPGs played through a service like Roll20. My friends and I have been doing all these things and it’s helping a lot!

If you have a favorite quarantine activity, let me know and I can include it in the next issue!

That said, make sure your quarantine supplies include contraception and condoms and stuff. If you have a uterus, you can buy emergency contraception (plan B) online and it’s real handy to have around in a situation like this.

Most public health departments stop updating their information around 4-5 PM local time on weekdays. That means that the earliest this will come out is around 6 PM Pacific time on weekdays going forward. On weekends things update more sporadically and earlier, so who knows what I’ll do then, but I’ll do my best.
