Global Reading Challenge: 105/200
A personal reading project, where I endeavour to read a book from each of the 193 United Nations member states plus 7 extra* ones. My main goal is to have fun and to learn, but I do have rules for myself:
The book should be fiction, and preferably a novel. I allow plays and poetry, but non-fiction only as the very last resort
The author should have the nationality of their country. If they have lived a good portion of their life there and genuinely represent the local culture, then it's ok if they've been born somewhere else
I want to read books that represent the local literary tradition. Preferably a "classic", a book that illustrates the local culture, or a book that is famous within the country. I avoid popular and contemporary fiction, and books that play outside of the country.
*Extra states have been determined based on UNESCO membership and personal interest where I want to read more books from. This is not a political statement.

Daily Tafsir of Ibn Kathir
Building of the Ka`bah and the Proclamation of the Hajj
This is a rebuke to those among Quraysh who worshipped others than Allah and joined partners with Him in the place which from the outset had been established on the basis of Tawhid and the worship of Allah Alone, with no partner or associate. Allah tells us that He showed Ibrahim the site of the `Atiq House, i.e., He guided him to it, entrusted it to him and granted him permission to build it. Many scholars take this as evidence to support their view that Ibrahim was the first one to build the House and that it was not built before his time. It was recorded in the Two Sahihs that Abu Dharr said, "I said, `O Messenger of Allah, which Masjid was the first to be built' He said,
(Al-Masjid Al-Haram.) I said, `Then which' He said,
(Bayt Al-Maqdis.) I said, `How long between them' He said,
(Forty years.)'' And Allah says:
(Verily, the first House (of worship) appointed for mankind was that at Bakkah (Makkah), full of blessing) ﴿3:96﴾ until the end of following two Ayat. Allah says:
(and We commanded Ibrahim and Isma`il that they should purify My House for those who are circumambulating it, or staying (I`tikaf), or bowing or prostrating themselves.) ﴿2:125﴾ And Allah says here:
(Associate not anything with Me,) meaning, `Build it in My Name Alone.'
(and sanctify My House) Qatadah and Mujahid said, "And purify it from Shirk.
(for those who circumambulate it, and those who stand up, and those who bow, and make prostration (in prayer)) means, `and make it purely for those who worship Allah Alone, with no partner or associate.' What is meant by "those who circumambulate it'' is obvious, since this is an act of worship that is done only at the Ka`bah and not at any other spot on earth.
(and those who stand up) means, in prayer. Allah says:
(and those who bow, and make prostration.) Tawaf and prayer are mentioned together because they are not prescribed together anywhere except in relation to the House. Tawaf is done around the Ka`bah and prayer is offered facing its direction in the majority of cases, with a few exceptions, such as when one is uncertain of the direction of the Qiblah, during battle and when praying optional prayers while traveling. And Allah knows best.
(And proclaim to mankind the Hajj) meaning, `announce the pilgrimage to mankind and call them to perform pilgrimage to this House which We have commanded you to build.' It was said that Ibrahim said: "O Lord, how can I convey this to people when my voice will not reach them'' It was said: "Call them and We will convey it.'' So Ibrahim stood up and said, "O mankind! Your Lord has established a House so come on pilgrimage to it.'' It is said that the mountains lowered themselves so that his voice would reach all the regions of the earth, and those who were still in their mothers' wombs and their fathers' loins would hear the call. The response came from everyone in the cities, deserts and countryside, and those whom Allah has decreed will make the pilgrimage, until the Day of Resurrection: "At Your service, O Allah, at Your service.'' This is a summary of the narrations from Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Sa`id bin Jubayr and others among the Salaf. And Allah knows best. This was recorded by Ibn Jarir and by Ibn Abi Hatim at length.
(They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel,) This Ayah was used as evidence by those scholars whose view is that Hajj performed on foot by those who are able, is better than Hajj performed riding, because the phrase "on foot'' is mentioned first, and because it is an indication of their keenness and resolve. Waki` narrated from Abu Al-`Umays from Abu Halhalah from Muhammad bin Ka`b that Ibn `Abbas said, "I do not regret anything except for the fact that I wish I had performed Hajj on foot, because Allah says,
(They will come to you on foot).'' But the majority are of the view that performing Hajj while riding is better, following the example of the Messenger of Allah , because he performed Hajj riding, although his physical ability was sound.
(they will come from every Fajj) means every route, as Allah says:
(and We placed therein Fijaj for them to pass) ﴿21:31﴾.
(`Amiq) means dis- tant. This was the view of Mujahid, `Ata', As-Suddi, Qatadah, Muqatil bin Hayan, Ath-Thawri and others. This Ayah is like the Ayah in which Allah tells us how Ibrahim prayed for his family,
(So fill some hearts among men with love towards them) ﴿14:37﴾. There is no one among the Muslims who does not long to see the Ka`bah and perform Tawaf, people come to this spot from every corner of the world.
(28. That they may witness things that are of benefit to them, and mention the Name of Allah on appointed days, over the beast of cattle that He has provided for them. Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor having a hard time.) (29. Then let them complete their prescribed duties and perform their vows, and circumambulate the `Atiq House.)

Pakistani Portable Ventilator Gets US Patent
Pakistani scientists at Aga Khan University (AKU) in Karachi have developed a portable ventilator that received a US patent, the university revealed on Wednesday.
Called the ‘Resuscitation Automation Device’ (RAD), the ventilator can provide emergency oxygen to patients with either severe forms of pneumonia or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which are among the main causes of death in the country.
AKU said in a statement that “the patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office recognizes over 20 innovative aspects of the University’s Resuscitation Automation Device, RAD, that can offer prompter, lifesaving treatment for patients suffering from critical respiratory problems”.

Doctors and researchers at AKU started developing the RAD in 2016. It is briefcase-sized and portable, unlike similar devices that are bulky and available only at medical facilities. The RAD can be operated via a mobile application that will allow emergency room doctors to remotely manage its settings.
“The app also gives hospital staff access to real-time data about the patient’s health before his or her arrival at the emergency room enabling prompter care to be provided,” AKU said.
It added that the clinical trials on RAD will be conducted soon and that the initial tests showed that it can provide a regular supply of oxygen.

The Assistant Director at AKU’s Center of Excellence for Trauma and Emergencies, Dr. Huba Atiq, said, “In Pakistan, critically ill patients present late to health care facilities due to a lack of proper health care infrastructure. Even if they manage to reach the tertiary care facility after traveling a huge distance, the underdeveloped critical care process, lack of trained health care staff and resources, especially mechanical ventilators, results in an increased rate of critical care mortality”.
She added that “the invention of a low-cost, operator-friendly, mechanical ventilator represents a solution to bridge this gap and provide timely appropriate critical care services”.

Is it safe to eat fruits, vegetables coming from coronavirus hotzones in the UAE?

Dubai: Do you suppose twice earlier than you choose up your groceries at the grocery store as of late? Do you end up questioning if it’s okay to purchase, say, apples or strawberries from a COVID-19 hotzone?
Nicely, the excellent news is that such fears, whereas not unusual, are unfounded.
As DailyKhaleej posed the questions to the authorities, supermarkets and suppliers, it emerged that stringent protocols are in place to guarantee the security of the merchandise proper from the place the imports are sourced, by the provide and distribution chain to the closing level of sale in the UAE.

Talking to DailyKhaleej, Dr Essam Al Hashmi, Head of Meals Commerce Management Part in the Meals Security Division at Dubai Municipality, mentioned, “With regards to food imports, we are implementing all necessary safety procedures. Samples of food coming from everywhere are in any case tested for safety by our inspectors. We are doing all that is required from our side to ensure that the products are safe.”
It’s a safe conclusion
Grocery store chains in the UAE clarify why it is safe to arrive at such a conclusion.
Kamal Vachani, group director of the Al Maya Group, which has 50 supermarkets in the nation, mentioned, “Most of our suppliers, with whom we have a long-standing relationship, are established names who follow very strict safety standards at the source. In the current climate, stepped up quality import checks have been implemented everywhere.”

He mentioned, “From our end too, we have defined hygiene protocols at every stage of the supply chain to make sure the products are handled with utmost safety, whether it is at our cold storage facilities at Al Aweer or when they are transported to our different stores, unpacked and stacked on the shelves.”

The topped up protocol
Broadly, the requirements embody:
o Compliance with native authority instructions and guaranteeing of enhanced private hygiene measures, ample PPEs (private protecting tools) for employees and upkeep of social distancing all through import dealing with procedures.
o Frequent checks to guarantee perishables are safe and recent.
o Thorough sanitisation of containers with floor sanitisers; frequent use of sanitisers by drivers.
o Coaching of import dealing with operations crew on correct handwashing and inventory dealing with procedures.
o Extra engaged dialogues with distributors for guaranteeing safe transportation of perishables.
o Enhanced QA (high quality assurance) checks on imported items to reconfirm their compliance with security requirements

Vijay mentioned, “In view of the current situation, we are topping up protocols to ensure every step in the daily organisation of the stores and our offices are conducted in a safe environment. We have installed additional hand sanitisers in common areas of office and retail space, specially checkout zones; in all warehouses, production divisions and staff accommodations; also, virucidal surface sanitisers available and our housekeeping team follows an updated sanitisation programme.”
There’s additionally the time issue
“Let’s take apples imported from the US for example,” mentioned Vachani. “If shipped by sea, they take at least 35 days to reach us; if they come by air, they take around 14-15 hours. Add to this the clearance time of three-four hours at the ports, plus the couple of hours it takes to be distributed to the stores. Besides safety controls at the source and throughout the logistics network, the sheer time taken for the products to reach us is sufficient to allay fears of even a remote possibility of contamination.”
Tumblr media
Hygiene protocols are in place at each stage of the provide chain, say retailers Picture Credit score: Ati Ur Rahman/ DailyKhaleej
Vijay added, “We are continuously monitoring the situation, assessing risks and responding in line with the directives of relevant authorities on food safety. The Ministry of Health along with health authorities have informed us that there is no scientific evidence that the virus can survive on items or packages of imported goods.”
Can coronavirus journey on packages?
So what are the possibilities of the lethal coronavirus travelling on the packages from the international locations they’re imported from?
The UAE Ministry of Well being and Prevention, which has addressed this concern in its consciousness drives, has requested exactly this query: Can the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) be transmitted by imported items?
Tumblr media
Are the cartons in which fruits and vegetables shipped safe? Picture Credit score: DailyKhaleej
The reply, in accordance to the ministry, is that there isn’t any scientific proof that the virus can survive on such gadgets or packages, so the chance of catching the virus from them is low.
Most producers and suppliers have additionally stepped up hygiene and security requirements after the outbreak of coronavirus.
Rainer Mueller, Nestlé’s communication and advertising providers director (MENA), mentioned, “Hundreds of thousands of households — and their pets — depend on us to proceed to present them with meals and beverage merchandise. In the UAE, we’re stepping up our help for the nation and are working tirelessly to maintain our workers, enterprise companions and communities wholesome and safe throughout the coronavirus outbreak.

He mentioned, “In addition to our normal strict hygiene standards, we have put in place enhanced safety measures in our factories, offices and distribution centres. We also ensure highest levels of hygiene and food safety across our value chain. We work together with our supply chain, distribution and retail partners to implement appropriate infection control measures and ensure continued production and delivery of our products.”
What the US-based FDA says
In accordance to the US-based Meals and Drug Administration (FDA), “There is no evidence of food or food packaging being associated with transmission of COVID-19.”
It mentioned, “Unlike foodborne gastrointestinal (GI) viruses like norovirus and hepatitis A that often make people ill through contaminated food, SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, is a virus that causes respiratory illness. Foodborne exposure to this virus is not known to be a route of transmission.”
To a steadily requested query on the recall of meals merchandise produced in a facility throughout the time {that a} employee is probably shedding the virus whereas working, the FDA mentioned, “We don’t anticipate that meals merchandise would want to be recalled or be withdrawn from the market due to COVID-19, as there’s at present no proof to help the transmission of COVID-19 related to meals or meals packaging.
“Additionally, facilities are required to control any risks that might be associated with workers who are ill regardless of the type of virus or bacteria. For example, facilities are required to maintain clean and sanitised facilities and food contact surfaces.”

Ten Interesting Afghanistan Novels
1. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini: “The Kite Runner tells the story of Amir, a young boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, whose closest friend is Hassan. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of Afghanistan's monarchy through the Soviet military intervention, the exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime.” 2. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini: ”Mariam is an illegitimate child, and suffers from both the stigma surrounding her birth along with the abuse she faces throughout her marriage. Laila, born a generation later, is comparatively privileged during her youth until their lives intersect and she is also forced to accept a marriage proposal from Rasheed, Mariam's husband.” 3. Fear of Beauty by Susan Froetschel: “The battered body of an Afghan boy is found at the base of a cliff outside a remote village in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Did he fall as most of the villagers think? Or is this the work of American soldiers, as others want to believe? Not far from the village, the US Army has set up a training outpost. Sofi, the boy's illiterate young mother, is desperate to find the truth about her son's death. But extremists move in and offer to roust the "infidels" from the region, adding new pressures and restrictions for the small village and its women.” 4. The Wasted Vigil by Nadeem Aslam: “There’s Marcus, an English expat who was married to an outspoken Afghani doctor; David, a former American spy; Lara, from St. Petersburg, looking for traces of her brother, a Russian soldier who disappeared years before; Casa, a young Afghani whose hatred of the Americans has plunged him into the blinding depths of zealotry; and James, an American Special Forces soldier. Aslam reveals the intertwining paths that these characters have traveled, constructing a timely and intimate portrait of the complex ties that bind us and the wars that continue to tear us apart.” 5. The Patience Stone by Atiq Rahimi: “In Persian folklore, Syngue Sabour is the name of a magical black stone, a patience stone, which absorbs the plight of those who confide in it. It is believed that the day it explodes, after having received too much hardship and pain, will be the day of the Apocalypse. But here, the Syngue Sabour is not a stone but rather a man lying brain-dead with a bullet lodged in his neck. His wife is with him, sitting by his side. But she resents him for having sacrificed her to the war, for never being able to resist the call to arms, for wanting to be a hero, and in the end, after all was said and done, for being incapacitated in a small skirmish. Yet she cares, and she speaks to him. She even talks to him more and more, opening up her deepest desires, pains, and secrets. While in the streets rival factions clash and soldiers are looting and killing around her, she speaks of her life, never knowing if her husband really hears. And it is an extraordinary confession, without restraint, about sex and love and her anger against a man who never understood her, who mistreated her, who never showed her any respect or kindness. Her admission releases the weight of oppression of marital, social, and religious norms, and she leads her story up to the great secret that is unthinkable in a country such as Afghanistan.” 6. Caravans by James A. Michener: “The story is set in Afghanistan immediately following World War II. The protagonist, Mark Miller, is stationed in Kabul at the American embassy and is given the assignment of an investigation to find a young woman, Ellen Jasper, also from the United States, who has disappeared after her marriage to an Afghan national thirteen months previously. During his journey through Afghanistan, Miller comes to a deeper understanding of the complexities and nuances of contemporary Afghan life. His travels also reveal the similarities of human nature across cultural and social boundaries.” 7. Flashes of War: Short Stories by Katey Schultz: “Schultz questions the stereotypes of modern war by bearing witness to the shared struggles of all who are touched by it. Numerous characters-returning U.S. soldier and pragmatic jihadist, Afghan mother and listless American sister, courageous amputee and a ghost that cannot let go-appear in Flashes of War, which captures personal moments of fear, introspection, confusion, and valor in one collection spanning nations and perspectives.” 8. The Pearl that Broke Its Shell by Nadia Hashimi: “Kabul, 2007: The Taliban rules the streets. With a drug-addicted father and no brothers, Rahima and her sisters can rarely leave the house or attend school. Their only hope lies in the ancient Afghan custom of bacha posh, which allows young Rahima to dress and be treated as a son until she is of marriageable age. As a boy, she has the kind of freedom that was previously unimaginable...freedom that will transform her forever. But Rahima is not the first in her family to adopt this unusual custom. A century earlier, her great-great-grandmother Shekiba, left orphaned by an epidemic, saved herself and built a new life in the same way—the change took her on a journey from the deprivation of life in a rural village to the opulence of a king’s palace in the bustling metropolis of Kabul.” 9. The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis: “Breadwinner series is an award-winning novel about loyalty, survival, families, and friendship under extraordinary circumstances during the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan. Eleven-year-old Parvana lives with her family in one room of a bombed-out apartment building in Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital city. Parvana’s father — a history teacher until his school was bombed and his health destroyed — works from a blanket on the ground in the marketplace, reading letters for people who cannot read or write. One day, he is arrested for the crime of having a foreign education, and the family is left without someone who can earn money or even shop for food. As conditions for the family grow desperate, only one solution emerges. Forbidden to earn money as a girl, Parvana must transform herself into a boy, and become the breadwinner.” 10. The Swallows of Kabul by Yasmina Khadra: “Set in Kabul under the rule of the Taliban, this extraordinary novel takes readers into the lives of two couples: Mohsen, who comes from a family of wealthy shopkeepers whom the Taliban has destroyed; Zunaira, his wife, exceedingly beautiful, who was once a brilliant teacher and is now no longer allowed to leave her home without an escort or covering her face. Intersecting their world is Atiq, a prison keeper, a man who has sincerely adopted the Taliban ideology and struggles to keep his faith, and his wife, Musarrat, who once rescued Atiq and is now dying of sickness and despair.”

The climate mitigation gap
Tumblr media
Education and government recommendations miss the most effective individual actions
Seth Wynes and Kimberly A Nicholas
We recommend four widely applicable high-impact (i.e. low emissions) actions with the potential to contribute to systemic change and substantially reduce annual personal emissions: having one fewer child (an average for developed countries of 58.6 tonnes CO2-equivalent (tCO2e) emission reductions per year), living car-free (2.4 tCO2e saved per year), avoiding airplane travel (1.6 tCO2e saved per roundtrip transatlantic flight) and eating a plant-based diet (0.8 tCO2e saved per year).
These actions have much greater potential to reduce emissions than commonly promoted strategies like comprehensive recycling (four times less effective than a plant-based diet) or changing household lightbulbs (eight times less). Though adolescents poised to establish lifelong patterns are an important target group for promoting high-impact actions, we find that ten high school science textbooks from Canada largely fail to mention these actions (they account for 4% of their recommended actions), instead focusing on incremental changes with much smaller potential emissions reductions. Government resources on climate change from the EU, USA, Canada, and Australia also focus recommendations on lower-impact actions. We conclude that there are opportunities to improve existing educational and communication structures to promote the most effective emission-reduction strategies and close this mitigation gap.

10 Interesting Afgani Novels
“1000 Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival. (Amazon)
“And the Mountains Echoed” by Khaled Hosseini
So, then. You want a story and I will tell you one...Afghanistan, 1952. Abdullah and his sister Pari live with their father and stepmother in the small village of Shadbagh. Their father, Saboor, is constantly in search of work and they struggle together through poverty and brutal winters. To Abdullah, Pari - as beautiful and sweet-natured as the fairy for which she was named - is everything. More like a parent than a brother, Abdullah will do anything for her, even trading his only pair of shoes for a feather for her treasured collection. Each night they sleep together in their cot, their heads touching, their limbs tangled. One day the siblings journey across the desert to Kabul with their father. Pari and Abdullah have no sense of the fate that awaits them there, for the event which unfolds will tear their lives apart; sometimes a finger must be cut to save the hand. Crossing generations and continents, moving from Kabul, to Paris, to San Francisco, to the Greek island of Tinos, with profound wisdom, depth, insight and compassion, Khaled Hosseini writes about the bonds that define us and shape our lives, the ways in which we help our loved ones in need, how the choices we make resonate through history and how we are often surprised by the people closest to us. (Goodreads)
“The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini
The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father’s servant, caught in the tragic sweep of history, The Kite Runner transports readers to Afghanistan at a tense and crucial moment of change and destruction. A powerful story of friendship, it is also about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sons—their love, their sacrifices, their lies. (Amazon)
“Words in The Dust” by Trent Reedy
Zulaikha hopes. She hopes for peace, now that the Taliban have been driven from Afghanistan; a good relationship with her hard stepmother; and one day even to go to school, or to have her cleft palate fixed. Zulaikha knows all will be provided for her--"Inshallah," God willing. Then she meets Meena, who offers to teach her the Afghan poetry she taught her late mother. And the Americans come to her village, promising not just new opportunities and dangers, but surgery to fix her face. These changes could mean a whole new life for Zulaikha--but can she dare to hope they'll come true? (Amazon)
“Caravans” by James A. Michener
In this romantic adventure of wild Afghanistan, master storyteller James Michener mixes the allure of the past with the dangers of today. After an impetuous American girl, Ellen Jasper, marries a young Afghan engineer, her parents hear no word from her. Although she wants freedom to do as she wishes, not even she is sure what that means. In the meantime, she is as good as lost in that wild land, perhaps forever.... (GoodReads)
“The Patience Stone” by Atiq Rahimi
In Persian folklore, Syngue Sabour is the name of a magical black stone, a patience stone, which absorbs the plight of those who confide in it. Her admission releases the weight of oppression of marital, social, and religious norms, and she leads her story up to the great secret that is unthinkable in a country such as Afghanistan. Winner of the Prix Goncourt, The Patience Stone captures with great courage and spare, poetic, prose the reality of everyday life for an intelligent woman under the oppressive weight of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. “A Thousand Rooms Of Dreams and Fears” by Atiq Rahimi
Farhad is a typical student, twenty-one years old, interested in wine, women, and poetry, and negligent of the religious conservatism of his grandfather. But he lives in Kabul in 1979, and the early days of the pro-Soviet coup are about to change his life forever. One night Farhad goes out drinking with a friend who is about to flee to Pakistan, and is brutally abused by a group soldiers. A few hours later he slowly regains consciousness in an unfamiliar house, beaten and confused, and thinks at first that he is dead. A strange and beautiful woman has dragged him into her home for safekeeping, and slowly Farhad begins to feel a forbidden love for her—a love that embodies an angry compassion for the suffering of Afghanistan’s women. As his mind sifts through its memories, fears, and hallucinations, and the outlines of reality start to harden, he realizes that, if he is to escape the soldiers who wish to finish the job they started, he must leave everything he loves behind and find a way to get to Pakistan. Rahimi uses his tight, spare prose to send the reader deep into the fractured mind and emotions of a country caught between religion and the political machinations of the world’s superpowers. (Amazon)
“The Wasted Vigil” by Nadeem Aslam
In The Wasted Vigil, Nadeem Aslam, the award-winning author of Maps for Lost Lovers, brilliantly knits together five seemingly unconnected lives to create a luminous story set in contemporary Afghanistan. There’s Marcus, an English expat who was married to an outspoken Afghani doctor; David, a former American spy; Lara, from St. Petersburg, looking for traces of her brother, a Russian soldier who disappeared years before; Casa, a young Afghani whose hatred of the Americans has plunged him into the blinding depths of zealotry; and James, an American Special Forces soldier. Aslamreveals the intertwining paths that these characters have traveled, constructing a timely and intimate portrait of the complex ties that bind us and the wars that continue to tear us apart. (Amazon)
“Pravana’s Journey” by Deborah Ellis
A war is raging in Afghanistan as a coalition of Western forces tries to oust the Taliban by bombing the country. Parvana’s father has died, and her mother, sister, and brother have gone to a faraway wedding, not knowing what has happened to her father. Parvana doesn’t know where they are, but sets out alone to find them — masquerading as a boy. Her journey only becomes more perilous as the bombs begin to fall. Making her way across the desolate Afghan countryside, she meets other children who are strays from the war: an infant boy in a bombed-out village, a nine-year-old girl who believes she has magical powers over land mines, and a boy with one leg. The children travel together because it is easier than being alone. As they forge their own family in the war zone that Afghanistan has become, their resilience, imagination and luck help them survive. The reissue includes a new cover and map, and an updated author’s note and a glossary provide young readers with background and context. All royalties from the sale of this book go to Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan. Parvana’s Fund supports education projects for Afghan women and children. (Amazon)
“The Pearl That Broke Its Shell” by Nadia Hashimi
In Kabul, 2007, with a drug-addicted father and no brothers, Rahima and her sisters can only sporadically attend school, and can rarely leave the house. Their only hope lies in the ancient custom of bacha posh, which allows young Rahima to dress and be treated as a boy until she is of marriageable age. As a son, she can attend school, go to the market, and chaperone her older sisters.
But Rahima is not the first in her family to adopt this unusual custom. A century earlier, her great-great grandmother, Shekiba, left orphaned by an epidemic, saved herself and built a new life the same way. Crisscrossing in time, The Pearl the Broke Its Shell interweaves the tales of these two women separated by a century who share similar destinies. But what will happen once Rahima is of marriageable age? Will Shekiba always live as a man? And if Rahima cannot adapt to life as a bride, how will she survive? (Amazon)
