THE W.B. YEATS MEMORIAL ON THE MOUNT IN ST STEPHEN'S GREEN IN DUBLIN
The W.B. Yeats Memorial is situated in an area known as the “Mount”, being a series of irregular terraces, forming an amphitheatre within the park.
A SCULPTURE BY HENRY MOORE IN ST STEPHEN’S GREEN I am willing to bet that the majority of people who visit St Stephen’s Green are unaware that there is a Henry Moore sculpture within the popular city centre public park. Published on 8 July 2020: “Today, the Office of Public Works is delighted to announce the reopening of the William Butler Yeats Memorial in St Stephens Green Park, following an…

These five design conferences are upcoming
At conferences, do you ever feel stuck for topics to discuss when meeting new people? An e-biking experience that costs $6999 solves that problem nicely: the Austin Biker Gang E-Bike Adventure. Aside from exploring the city, you can learn about its history and culture and take cool photographs. You'll receive a helmet, bottled water, and rider training at 506 Walsh St. Although the organizers stress that anyone who can ride a push bike should easily be able to ride an e-bike. There's the perfect antidote to the noise and intensity of Sixth Street in Austin. St. Cecilia Hotel honors the patron saint of music and poetry with its 14 rooms. This five-star hotel is located at 112 Academy Drive, a short distance from Austin Convention Center, and its design pays tribute to both rock 'n' roll and royal elegance. In addition to free bikes and free Wi-Fi, guests have access to an outdoor pool. A pool view can be found in each of the rooms as well as a private bathroom, a desk, a seating area and a private balcony. 2. UXDX EMEA, Dublin UX (user experience), UI (user interface), and what is UXDX, exactly? UXDX refers to the relationship between UX Design and DevOps in modern digital design, where DX means developer experience. You'll gain insight into leading product, UX, design, and developer practices at this year's UXDX conference in Dublin and online. While learning these techniques, you'll develop T-shaped skills and learn what modern digital teams are doing. All this happens from 12-14 October at Dublin's Royal Dublin Society. Beyond the exhibition Featuring the story of the Irish diaspora, EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum has been named Europe's Leading Tourist Attraction in 2019, 2020 and 2021. A brilliantly designed museum, this museum aims to make Irish history more than a list of names and dates. A variety of interactive exhibits, including video galleries and motion sensor quizzes, allow visitors to get up close and personal with the subject. The museum is located at Custom House Quay, North Dock, Dublin 1, and you will spend between one and two hours there. In the heart of Dublin 2, Las Tapas de Lola serves Spanish tapas, complemented by wines, beers and tasty sangria. Both Anna, a Barcelona native, and Vanessa, a local girl, are passionate about delivering an authentic dining experience, which is evident in the quality and taste of the cuisine. In their view, it's not about haute cuisine nor flashy interiors. The aim is for people to feel at home, relaxed, and enjoy their food in a relaxed atmosphere. Open 5pm to 10:30pm on Thursdays, 5pm to 11pm on Fridays, 1pm to 10:30pm on Saturdays, and 1pm to 10:30pm on Sundays. Make sure you book ahead, but it will be worth the effort. There are herringbone floors throughout the Devlin, wooden ceilings, and original paintings in the hotel. But that's not all. The hotel features 40 cosy modern rooms, a rooftop restaurant, a luxury cinema, and an Americana-themed cocktail bar. It is located in a trendy district south of Dublin City Centre, at 117-119 Ranelagh Street, Dublin 6. Temple Bar is about 45 minutes away by foot, or you can take the tram, which is about five minutes away by tram. 3. Adobe Max One of the world's largest gatherings of creatives is Adobe Max. This unique mix of software-focused reveals, sneaks, and skill-building sessions is meant to promote both the Creative Cloud and creativity in general. Lockdown in 2020-1 forced it online, but it returns to Los Angeles in 2022 for two days of conference on 18-20 October, with a pre-conference on 16-17 October. On this website, you can watch all the talks from last year's virtual event for free. Beyond the exhibition Even just to see the building itself is worth a visit at The Broad, a downtown Los Angeles art institution. You'll also find Frank Gehry's iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall next door, so you'll get a two-fer in terms of architectural wonder. The 120000-square-foot space is packed with everything from Warhol and Koonz to the latest cutting-edge practitioners. Yayoi Kusama's immersive Infinity Mirrored Room is a highlight at the moment: a mirrored room with LED lights that you can literally enter. The general admission and timed tickets at this exhibition are free, but you must book in advance. Mexican cuisine and drinks have been served at El Compadre in Hollywood since 1975. With its clay roof tiles, wrought iron lanterns, and stained glass chandeliers, it has the look and feel of an old-world hacienda. There is live music nightly from a trio singing Mexican classics, dim but sultry lighting, and a separate bar serving mixed cocktails and domestic and imported beer. During the week, El Compadre is open from 11am to 10pm, and on weekends, it is open from 11am to 9pm. Jade Orchid Phạm Văn Đồng

James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was born on February 2, 1882. He was an Irish novelist, short story writer, poet, teacher, and literary critic. He contributed to the modernist avant-garde movement and is regarded as one of the most influential and important writers of the 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses (1922), a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in a variety of literary styles, most famously stream of consciousness. Other well-known works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). His other writings include three books of poetry, a play, his published letters and occasional journalism.
Joyce was born in Dublin into a middle-class family. A brilliant student, he briefly attended the Christian Brothers-run O'Connell School before excelling at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, despite the chaotic family life imposed by his father's unpredictable finances. He went on to attend University College Dublin.
In 1904, in his early 20s, Joyce emigrated to continental Europe with his partner (and later wife) Nora Barnacle. They lived in Trieste, Paris, and Zürich. Although most of his adult life was spent abroad, Joyce's fictional universe centres on Dublin and is populated largely by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies, and friends from his time there. Ulysses in particular is set with precision in the streets and alleyways of the city. Shortly after the publication of Ulysses, he elucidated this preoccupation somewhat, saying, "For myself, I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal."
Joyce's work has been an important influence on writers and scholars such as Samuel Beckett, Seán Ó Ríordáin, Jorge Luis Borges, Flann O'Brien, Salman Rushdie, Robert Anton Wilson, John Updike, David Lodge, Cormac McCarthy, and Joseph Campbell. Ulysses has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire [Modernist] movement". The Bulgarian-French literary theorist Julia Kristeva characterised Joyce's novel writing as "polyphonic" and a hallmark of postmodernity alongside the poets Mallarmé and Rimbaud.
Some scholars, notably Vladimir Nabokov, have reservations, often championing some of his fiction while condemning other works. In Nabokov's opinion, Ulysses was brilliant, while Finnegans Wake was horrible.
Joyce's influence is also evident in fields other than literature. The sentence "Three quarks for Muster Mark!" in Joyce's Finnegans Wake is the source of the word "quark", the name of one of the elementary particles proposed by physicist Murray Gell-Mann in 1963.
The work and life of Joyce is celebrated annually on 16 June, known as Bloomsday, in Dublin and in an increasing number of cities worldwide, and critical studies in scholarly publications, such as the James Joyce Quarterly, continue. Both popular and academic uses of Joyce's work were hampered by restrictions imposed by Stephen J. Joyce, Joyce's grandson, and executor of his literary estate until his 2020 death. On 1 January 2012, those restrictions were lessened by the expiry of copyright protection of much of the published work of James Joyce.
In April 2013, the Central Bank of Ireland issued a silver €10 commemorative coin in honour of Joyce that misquoted a famous line from Ulysses.

On 11 January 1941, Joyce underwent surgery in Zürich for a perforated duodenal ulcer. He fell into a coma the following day. He awoke at 2 am on 13 January 1941, and asked a nurse to call his wife and son, before losing consciousness again. They were en route when he died 15 minutes later. Joyce was less than a month short of his 59th birthday.
His body was buried in the Fluntern Cemetery, Zürich. Swiss tenor Max Meili sang "Addio terra, addio cielo" from Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at the burial service. Although two senior Irish diplomats were in Switzerland at the time, neither attended Joyce's funeral, and the Irish government later declined Nora's offer to permit the repatriation of Joyce's remains. When Joseph Walshe, secretary at the Department of External Affairs in Dublin, was informed of Joyce's death by Frank Cremins, chargé d'affaires at Bern, Walshe responded "Please wire details of Joyce's death. If possible find out did he die a Catholic? Express sympathy with Mrs Joyce and explain inability to attend funeral". Buried originally in an ordinary grave, Joyce was moved in 1966 to a more prominent "honour grave", with a seated portrait statue by American artist Milton Hebald nearby. Nora, whom he had married in 1931, survived him by 10 years. She is buried by his side, as is their son Giorgio, who died in 1976.
In October 2019, a motion was put to Dublin City Council to plan and budget for the costs of the exhumations and reburials of Joyce and his family somewhere in Dublin, subject to his family's wishes. The proposal immediately became controversial, with the Irish Times commenting: "...it is hard not to suspect that there is a calculating, even mercantile, aspect to contemporary Ireland's relationship to its great writers, whom we are often more keen to 'celebrate', and if possible monetise, than read".

Demolitions
for Czechoslovakia’s architectures between 1960s–1980s is a controversial subject. The public may still regard it negatively, owing to a lack of information or an adverse experience with the country’s regime before the Velvet Revolution.

Erosion of Transgas (2020) by NGP/Loom on the Moon
Helena Doudová, the curator of the exhibition NO DEMOLITIONS! Forms of Brutalism in Prague, presents Brutalism buildings in Prague that prominently enter the urban scene. The nearly two hundred and fifty original architectural plans, photographs and models come mostly from the Architecture Collection of the National Gallery Prague. The examples of the most progressive architecture works feature the Kotva Department Store, the former Central Telecommunications Building at Žižkov (marked for demolition), the former Federal Assembly, Hotel Intercontinental and Barrandov Bridge and the recently demolished Transgas complex.
“No Demolitions!” is a quite straightforward title for an exhibition. What is happening in Prague and the Czech Republic, that led you to organize this exhibition and choose this title?
With the exhibition we intended to highlight the values of late modern and brutalist architecture in Prague that becomes either demolished or refurbished beyond the point of recognition. Some of the buildings ceased to exist throughout the one year since we started working on the topic. We intended to show that the buildings by the architects like Karel Prager, Karel Filsak, the husband-and-wife team Machoninovi and Šrámkovi have built edifices, which are comparable with the most prestigious architecture production of the former Western Europe and the US.

The Trade Fair Palace is an exclusive choice for an architectural exhibition; why did you choose this location?
It is a building with strong symbolic meaning, a real jewel of functionalist architecture but at the same time it is difficult to present an exhibition due to technical parameters as light because paper plans and photography are very sensitive to it. The gallery floor plan worked quite well in a sequence, so the exhibition concept fit quite well. Ondřej Císler created vitrines with colored large plans and prints from the architecture collection of the National Gallery in Prague. Plans are contrasted with the photography of the deteriorated state of the buildings by Olja Triaška Stefanović.
In many countries of the former East Bloc, protecting Late Modern architecture creates a specific challenge, as these buildings are widely associated with the negative perception of the political era they were created in. This can very easily lead to iconoclastic gestures, as we have seen in the case of Skopje 2014. What can art history, museology and the wider profession do against this phenomenon?
The negative public opinion toward these buildings is a cluster of multiple problems. One general problem not only in the Central or Eastern Europe is the poor long term maintenance, which makes the buildings appear even more brutal than intended in the architecture design. As the exhibition shows, the architects were thinking of the public space around these buildings, inserted artworks and parks, as a number of designs show.
Secondly, the political associations are difficult, but also controversial to me. I very much think that the socialist state invested into large public buildings before 1989 and did provide socially accessible culture programs, sports, etc. So to me the brutalist buildings are valuable and authentic through their aim to belong to the community but also undercover propaganda. One can’t change people's memories or their experience with communism, but it’s not the fault of buildings that were ironically planned in the golden sixties in the time of the political détente in Czechoslovakia.

In comparison, no large public building in Prague has been built since 30 years, what shows the shift of the capital flow with privatization. Nowadays, the real estate investors misuse the negative public opinion to demolish high quality buildings to acquire lucrative plots in the city centre for private investment. In many cases it would have been possible to reuse the brutalist buildings at a lower expense, like for example the Embassy of CZ in Berlin.
The National Gallery seems to be a prestigious place for the exhibition about the architecture of an era that is widely disputed and is also a strong institutional statement; how are Czech academics and professionals reacting to the events around the architecture of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s?
I very much believe in the power of the exhibition as a tool for mediation and education, but also bringing up controversial or uncomfortable topics. That is the position the National Gallery has. Its architecture collection is centred around post-1945 architecture so it is logical to present it in an innovative perspective. Brutalism has received international acclaim in architecture history since 2010s, so we have had many academic discussions, but to me it is important to bring the phenomenon to the public. It is interesting that the expression is the same in former East and West, the only difference is that in the former West the buildings like the MET Breuer are celebrated, while in the former East these buildings are admired by the professionals and despised by the wide public.
In most of our countries we see the profession and the public speaking out to protect some of these buildings, in Hungary this happened by the proposed demolition of Zoltán Gulyás’ Chemolimpx office building in the early 2010s, and more recently when the government announced the demolition of Csaba Virág’s soc-hi-tech Electric Power Distribution Center. There are similar stories in Czechia and Poland - how do you explain the public being so involved in these cases?
Yes, there is an entire movement of active architecture historians, architects and interested public. David Crowley, the head of arts department of the NCAD in Dublin, is a great observer of these shifts, which demonstrate a renewal of the consciousness for public sphere and public spaces in general. So far the protests have been unsuccessful in confrontation with the investment pressures, a culmination point was the demolition of the Transgas building, public protests accompanied the demolition of Hotel Praha, and eventually rescued railway station in Havířov. Crowley says this a unique trait in Central Europe as he has not seen such engagement in the UK or Ireland. In Germany, the heritage protection of post-war buildings is really advanced by now, but there are not such strong public initiatives to me...

Why did you choose brutalism as a specific style to sum up these buildings? Strictly speaking, the term is quite well defined and confined to a specific group of mostly British and American buildings, what is brutalism in your definition?
The usual association is béton brut, with the main inspiration of Le Corbusier. At the same time, I took at hand Rayner Banham, who speaks about three criteria, in short – the figure, the revealed construction and authenticity of material, which would better comply with the notion of brutalism in variety. Also brutalism has been changing from the expression of the Smithson's Hunstanton school, to let's say Paul Rudolph. In such way brutalism became an international expression with multiple specifics.
Tumblr media

The notion of brutalism has been a subject of a dispute in the curatorial team with Petr Vorlík, Klára Brůhová (CTU Prague) and Radomíra Sedláková (NG Prague). We assumed the Czech architecture was influenced by brutalism, to a smaller or larger extent depending on every architect. Architecture of late modernism in Czech shows finer handling of material such as glass, mosaics, of wooden cladding, a variety of bright colours, that do not particularly express the notion of brutalism associated with rough concrete. The houses do in a way respect the scale of the surrounding city, are most often broken down in a composition of smaller volumes, reference bay windows of surrounding houses, etc.
Tumblr media

At the same time the label brutalism is in public drawn to all kinds of buildings, which have with little or nothing to do with late modernism, actually, are clad in stone. So as architecture historians we strived to differentiate and raise public awareness on the topic.
Is there a specific Czech brutalism? Are there any national or regional characteristics in this era?
This is not an easy question. Brutalism was a global and a local phenomenon. Interestingly, in the Czechoslovak architecture we see magazines that iconic brutalist buildings were published, like La Tourette, or the architecture by Stirling in the 1960s and 1970s. So the information iron curtain was more semi-penetrable in terms of architecture knowledge and expression, like Ákos Moravánszky says. The regional specifics construction processes, the quality and variability of materials, which was lower in the former Eastern block, and also the public opinion which incorrectly associates the buildings with state socialism.
We are talking about the architectural production of an era that produced an incredible amount of buildings. How is it possible to create a canon for such a recent past and what do you think about the monumental protection regarding these buildings? What should be protected and how? Can you also name a few example, interesting buildings (and interiors) from Czechia?
A unique example is the already heritage protected Kotva Department Store by architect's team Věra and Vladimír Machoninovi.

The former Federal Assembly is another iconic example of a daring construction originally intended for bridges. It encloses the former classical modernist stock exchange building and complements the ensemble anew. Interiors have unfortunately been refurbished and only very few items are present in the museums.

A unique example is the Czech embassy in Berlin with intact interiors. A contested interior reconstruction is currently Hotel Thermal by Machoninovi in Karlovy Vary. At least five outstanding buildings have been demolished in Prague, countless have been refurbished. Only two above-named brutalist buildings are heritage protected, other like Hotel Intercontinental by Filsak, or Centrotex by Hiský, Motokov by Kuna should become protected as unique works of art and architecture.

Harry and Meghan's farewell tour
Tumblr media
Nearly two months after Prince Harry and Meghan’s seismic revelation that they want to step back as senior members of the Royal Family, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are back in London for what some are calling their “farewell tour.” The “tour” offers an eclectic mix of events — from support of charitable endeavours to Harry officially opening a motor racing museum to their attendance on Monday at the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey.   There, much scrutiny will be placed on their appearance with other senior members of the Royal Family, including Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, his father, Prince Charles, and his brother, Prince William, and his wife, Kate. “They are taking a huge step in giving up royal life — it is all Harry has known — and I would think that he in particular will have very mixed emotions” over the next few days, said royal biographer Penny Junor, author of Prince Harry: Brother Soldier Son. On Thursday night, it was all smiles as Harry and Meghan attended the Endeavour Awards. “One of the main thrusts of Harry’s work has been motivating injured ex-servicemen and women, and this is what the Endeavour Fund Awards are all about,” Junor said via email. “Interestingly, they were set up by the charitable foundation he and Meghan used to share with William and Kate, but from which they broke away before leaving royal work entirely.” Meghan is also expected to attend an event Sunday marking International Women’s Day. “Meghan taking part in International Women’s Day is very much a reflection of her personal and strongly held interests,” said Junor. This weekend’s events are widely thought to be their last official royal appearances before they step back from duties as senior members of the Royal Family on March 31. Whether the events were chosen specifically for that or were in their royal diaries long before their decision to step back was announced isn’t clear. “Their engagements are usually planned months in advance,” said Junor. “Either way, these are causes close to their hearts.” The Commonwealth Service will see them at an event that is also very close to the Queen’s heart. “Both Harry and Meghan were given really central roles within the Commonwealth by the Queen, and I think it’s important to her that if they’re going to be in the U.K., they turn up for this,” said Philip Murphy, director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies at the University of London. Some of those roles will be given up. Others have been retained as the couple steps back from official duties but keeps some of their private charitable interests. As much as there may be a sense of finality about the weekend’s events, there is also a sense that the Queen is leaving the door open for a return if they wish. The arrangements for stepping back include a review after 12 months. “Clearly the way is being left open for future conversations concerning their role,” said Toronto-based royal author and historian Carolyn Harris. “There have been a number of unexpected developments in the Royal Family in recent months and there may well be more going forward.” One thing is more certain, however — it’s unlikely their new life, which has seen them settle on Vancouver Island, will rid them of something that had clearly been a difficulty for them. “While they may be hoping that they will be able to lead a more private life in [the] future, so far there is no indication that the tabloids plan to leave them in peace,” said Junor.
Soft diplomacy on display
Tumblr media
While the Royals may try to avoid any overt public displays of politics, they don’t shy away from soft diplomacy. That’s been front and centre this week as William and Kate visited the Republic of Ireland, and will be at the heart of trips Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, make later this month to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus and Jordan. All of this comes in the shadow of Brexit, which included much concern over what would happen with the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. And it was hard not to see the spectre of the U.K.’s departure from the European Union in the speech William made in Dublin on Wednesday night. “As we look ahead to some changes in our relationship, we must never forget how far we have come together in recent decades in transforming the relationships across our two islands,” he said. The Queen made a historic visit to the Republic of Ireland in 2011, which Harris said “was seen as key to addressing the difficult historic relationship between Britain and Ireland.” Charles has also visited, including a 2015 trip to the site of the murder of his great uncle and mentor, Louis Mountbatten, at the hands of the Irish Republican Army. “There’s some evidence there’s a growing interest in Ireland in Irish unity, so certainly this is a delicate time for the members of the Royal Family to visit Ireland,” said Harris. But it was a warm Irish welcome all around for William and Kate during their three-day visit, which included sombre moments as they laid a wreath at a memorial to those who died for Irish independence, and lighter moments as they sampled Guinness and tried their hands at everything from juggling to hurling. “‘I just love them’ — hundreds welcome British royals to Galway,” read a headline in The Irish Times on Thursday. Cyprus is another member of the European Union, so that visit by Charles and Camilla later in March falls in line with a recent trend of European visits by members of the Royal Family. “In terms of the visit to Jordan, the British and Jordanian royal families have a warm relationship and Prince Charles has a lot of interest in interfaith dialogue,” said Harris. “It’s an opportunity for Charles and Camilla to serve in a diplomatic role and to be able to assist with relations between the United Kingdom and Jordan.” While such trips are part of the regular royal routine, they may be receiving more scrutiny right now because they stand in marked contrast to the other more personal royal news dominating the media lately — the departure of Meghan and Harry from the senior ranks. “Now, what might be seen as routine royal visits are attracting a lot of attention, as there’s a lot of interest in how the roles of  senior members ... are being organized,” said Harris.   “It’s been noted Charles has 51 engagements in nine days — so are their schedules going to grow busier or will we simply expect to see fewer overseas tours going forward?” One other question still outstanding: Will there be a high-profile visit to Canada this year? No official word on that yet.
Not on the taxpayers' tab — after March 31
It was a question that loomed over Harry and Meghan and their time in Canada for weeks: Would taxpayers be covering the costs of security for the couple while they are in the country? Finally, the federal government had an answer the other day, and it was multi-pronged. Yes, the government had been helping out with security since they arrived in November. But no, there won’t be any more support after March 31, when Harry and Meghan are no longer carrying out official duties as senior members of the Royal Family. The decision left the Canadian Taxpayers Federation “pretty pleased,” federal director Aaron Wudrick said. “There are not a lot of issues where I get a lot of proactive phone calls and emails from people who are upset, and this was one of them,” he said. “So I think those people are going to be pleased they’re not going to be on the hook for the Duke and Duchess after the end of March.” People wish the couple well, he said. “It’s not personal.” Harry and Meghan won’t be here in any official capacity, and that makes a difference, Wudrick suggested. “They’re essentially viewed by most of the public as wealthy celebrities, and like any wealthy celebrity that moves here, there isn’t really any obligation for everybody else to pay for things like their security.” Wudrick said it was “a bit surprising” to learn how long the government had been paying for their security. While the couple had arrived in November, their presence here was not publicly confirmed until just before Christmas.   “As much as I think some people might still be upset about the fact we paid at all, I think what’s more important is that … Canadians are not being asked to pay indefinitely for them.” Royally quotable"
“It is right that we continue to remember those who suffered as a consequence of our troubled past. And whilst many wrongs have been done, it is important that we are not bound by these." —  Prince William speaks at the Museum of Literature in Dublin as he and his wife, Kate, visit Ireland.
Royals in Canada
Tumblr media
Harry and Meghan may be seeking a quieter life on Vancouver Island, but other Royals received a rousing welcome when they came for official visits to British Columbia.
An estimated 15,000 people were on hand when Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip arrived in Victoria on March 8, 1983, the Globe and Mail reported. A “bathtub flotilla” and a crowd estimated at more than 10,000 welcomed Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip when they arrived in Nanaimo a couple of days later.
“The security all but vanished and children ignored rope cordons when nearly everyone who lives in this Vancouver Island city turned out yesterday to see the Queen,” the Globe reported.
The four-day visit to British Columbia also took Elizabeth and Philip to Vancouver, Vernon, Kamloops and New Westminster, and came at the end of a month-long tour to the U.S. West Coast.

‘The Last Duel’ is an Epic Period Feature Film soon to be shooting in various parts of Ireland over the coming months.  It will be Directed by Ridley Scott and will star Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer.  Filming will mostly take place around Dublin, Wicklow, Meath and Tipperary.  Affleck, Damon and Nicole Holofcener have written the screenplay which is based on the book ‘The Last Duel’ by Eric Jager.  Set in Medieval France, the story is an epic tale of betrayal and justice. We will be looking to directly employ LOTS of Film Extras for huge crowd scenes in the coming months.  We are holding an Extras Open Casting day next week in Dublin City Centre and, we are trying to put out as much information as possible to attract interested people to apply to take part as an extra.  It is paid work and the open casting will be open to adults. Making of mural of murdered activist Berta Caceres from Trocaire on Vimeo.
Trócaire asked mural artist Emmalene Blake (ESTR) to create this stunning mural in Dublin city centre to commemorate murdered Honduran activist Berta Caceres. Berta was killed for standing up against big business in Honduras to protect her people's environmental and human rights.
Trócaire's mural is on Chatham street at Busyfeet and Coco café, and has been created to launch our 2020 Lent appeal which focuses on women around the world who are struggling to protect their families.

240 people to lose jobs as An Post announce closure of Cork mail centre
~CXL~
More than 200 jobs are to be lost with the closure of the An Post Mail Centre in Little Island, Co Cork.
A decision was made last year to close one of the four mail sorting in Irelandwith staff at the Cork centre on Wednesday night being told that centres in Athlone, Dublin and Portlaoise will remain open with their site being wound down.
An Post says it is consolidating and reducing its letter processing capacity in line with global industry trends, and switching investment into its e-commerce/parcels network in Cork city and county.
The consolidation of letters operations will see the closure of the Cork Mails Centre (CMC) in Little Island with the loss of 240 jobs. Currently the Cork plant is operating at below 25 per cent capacity as mail volumes decline at about 7 per cent per annum due to customers moving from the letters to parcels and e-commerce.
The closure will be phased between September of this year and March 2020 and staff will be offered exit packages of six weeks per year of service up to a maximum of two years’ pay, redeployment opportunities within An Post’s networks in the Cork area and further education/re-skilling grants of up to €3,000 per person.
An Post stress that they are engaged with the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) to ensure the best possible outcome for all CMC staff. The closure of a mail centre was considered by the Labour Court in its recommendation of September 2017.
