Forgive me if this is a foolish question, but would you happen to know if there’s any sources out there on historical prayer behaviors? IE body position, gestures, etc. I don’t come from a religious background, so I struggle to know to go about praying even when I know what I want to say
Gestures and actions during Irish/Gaelic Pagan prayer.
This is not a foolish question at all! In fact it is a great one. Honestly finding the right words is the hardest part. There is little in the way of documented proof of how pre christian Gaels prayed so reconstruction is necessary. This makes it tricky to find authentic sources, thankfully there is a few practice's we can reconstruct with a lot of certainty. (Sources in bracketed links)
Clockwise/Deiseal movement The act of moving in a circle in a clockwise direction (deiseal) is frequently seen to be auspicious and is used in many Irish Christian rituals. Many of these practices are still done today, especially at holy wells or other pilgrimage sites such at the various stations on Croagh Patrick (link). The opposite of this is anti-clockwise or Tuathal is frequently used in curses. This is a recurring theme throughout Irish and Scottish folklore and has been argued to be partially of a pre Christian origin(Link to book containing a chapter on the topic specifically chapter 10)
This is usually done at Holy Wells while doing the rosary. The well itself or an object near it like a statue, rock or tree is encircled by the worshiper usually 3 or 7 times while reciting the rosary. (link)(link)(link). And is a still living practice.
This clockwise movement was also used in medieval rituals, with supposedly in the Book of Fenagh, an inauguration ritual is described where a bell shrine was walked around a king and his solders clockwise. (in book chapter 10).
The use of the word deiseal and its association with blessing led it in the past to be an equivalent to "bless you" after a sneeze. (link). The sunwise or clockwise direction is synonymous with blessings.
Head down, eyes up The Carmina Gadelica contains a number of prayers from gaelic scotland. Many of which follow a standard christian practice and just as many are situational in nature like to be said while washing ones hands, however certain ones stand out as being representative of a greater traditions of actions due to their unusualness.
References to raising ones eyes (link) and leaving the palms open and outstretched are mentioned (link page 290)
Both women and men were said to curtsey with men doing a bowing motion much like a curtsey in that it involved the bending of the left knee to the side and the right one straight as a show of respect (link)
To summarise with a quote:
"So the lifting of hands, raising of the eyes, and the bowing of the head are all actions that could be done during our prayers. In raising our hands we show a gesture of giving, just as we ‘give’ prayers of thanks, or blessing, or whatever other purpose we might be praying for, especially since there seems to be a since that we’re meant to raise the palms up to the sky (or moon, more to the point) instead of simply holding our hands out, palms up. It’s less a gesture that might suggest we’re asking for a handout than it gives a sense that we’re reaching out." -An Introduction To Gaelic Polytheism by Marissa Hegarty
Curse pose While not involved with worship, poets when preforming a satire, often magical in nature were said to stand on one foot, with one eye closed, holding up one hand, and sometimes speaking with one breath. This seems to specifically used for cursing however.
What to incorporate into your pagan practice I would then recommend that while praying, walking in a circle in a clockwise direction with a bowed head, eyes up, while holding out your hands with the palms skyward would be appropriate. I like to have one hand over the other. After the prayer has concluded a curtsey should be done.
If anyone else has anything to add please do so with what gestures and actions you take during prayers. I hope this answers your question and that it was at all helpful.

WITCH ISO COMMUNITY
I am primarily a solitary draoí, a practitioner of indigenous Irish magic. I study primarily via the Irish Pagan School but also am constantly doing independent research. I’m a nerd for my culture and a nerd for my practice, and even during spiritual lulls it remains one of my special interests.
I’ve been in discord servers before, almost always they bill themselves as conscientiously focused on research driven exploration and an effort to be inclusive while also building non appropriative practices. I have not found that to be true in any of the servers I’ve been in. I’m not exactly spry these days and doubt I could handle moderating a group, but does anyone know of one that might fit my tastes?
I’d prefer on the smaller side but fairly active. Does not need to be Irish focused but I wouldn’t mind! I also have non Irish aspects to my personal spirituality, and am just generally a lover of culture and folklore so I’m always down for a nondenominational space!
I just want a dedicated space and new friends with similar goals and interests 😭

Meet me where the sky touches the sea
Tumblr media
A/N: for those unaware, i spend my summers sailing with my grandparents some years, and i miss it dearly. The result is a mermaid au fanfic :) childe is the mermaid today, of course, since i feel his traveling self fits the theme quite well. And also, i love his dorky self.
Mermaid!childe x Sailor!reader
Tumblr media
The smell of the sea surrounded you, the bow of your small ship cutting through the water. Gulls cried and friends waved as you departed, controlling your sails with experienced ease.
Barefoot and smiling, you began your journey, going to a lovely set of islands, where one could wash the weight off their soul.
Luckily, the weather was fair and the waters warm as you went. Some days, dolphins would swim with your ship, putting a smile on your face.
On one such day though, a viridescent blue caught your eye. Which was strange, considering dolphins are niether blue nor shiny.
Shocked laughter left your lips when a mermaid- merman? - jumped from the water, smiling so wide his eyes were closed. Setting your sails steady you sat on the side of your little boat and waved, hoping to catch his attention.
He noticed thankfully, approaching the side of your ship and shaking ginger hair from his face. "Hello traveler! What brings you to this stretch of the sea?"
"I'm sailing to the draíocht isles."
The man(?) Nods, keeping easy pace with your boat to continue the conversation. "I see, and what might your name be? I'm ajax, but many call me childe."
His sunny smile drew one out of you in return, "I'm y/n."
"well, dearest y/n, would you mind if i joined you for this journey? I hear the draíocht isles are lovely this time of year."
"sure, but be careful of the anchor, its up right now and might cause an injury."
Ajax saluted you with a chuckled, swimming joyfully around your little boat. "Aye, aye cap'n!"
Shaking your head, you stood up, hair flitting in the breeze as you swung around your ship with a familiar type of grace. "Off we go then, ajax!"
Light laughter flew with the wind, carrying to far gods ears as the two of you traveled in easy companionship, spending evenings anchored by small islands, you sat in a hanginf chair while you chatted.
And when the sun was high in the sky, salted breeze hitting your skin, you finally reached your destination.
"hey y/n, come swim!"
"give me a sec childe, I'll change and join you."
And join you him did, in the sea. His hands found you easily, keeping you both afloat as he smiled and pressed a kiss to your temple.
"I've been wanting to do that for awhile."
You kissed his cheek with a smile, replying "and I've been wanting to do that."
The satisfied smile he gave you was plenty enough for you. You swam along with him in the turquoise waters, seeing sea life aplenty.
And when you returned to your boat for the night, childe kissed your lips proper and bid you goodnight.
"goodnight, ajax."
From there on, your days were spent swimming and sailing in peace, touring the vast seas and following ajax to the ends of the earth. Barefoot, hair loose, and often in your swimsuit instead of 'proper' clothes.
One evening, childe looked a little hesitant before asking you something peculiar.
"y/n? I have a question."
"yes, ajax?"
"if you could, would you become a child of the sea and join me here?"
"depends, would you teach me your ways?"
Ajax smiled, "of course."
"thats your awnser then, dearest."
And seemingly appeased, you returned below decks to sleep, the odd conversation weighing on your mind.
When morning broke, and you had hopped in with childe, he murmured into your ear, "this may hurt, but bear with me."
He brushed his fingers over your forehead, and with a stinging pain your legs fused to become a tail.
It was a striking dark orange, the beta-like end fading into burgundy.
Childe whistled between his teeth. When you reached up, you felt the same small fins as childe where ears normally were.
"first of all, your gorgeous, and secondly, don't worry, I'll turn you back whenever you give the word."
You threw your arms around his neck, moving awkwardly through the water.
"dearest ajax, i believe you have a whole new world to show me?"
He laughed and grabbed your hand, "swimming lessons first, then off we go!"
After a few tries you had the hang of it, and ajax whisked you away. Diving down, it took a second but you found you could "breathe" here, too.
A world of magic awaited you, clearly, beyond the waves of the sea.
Ajax' tail sparkled with the sun as you followed him down, your eyes tracking the movements he made as you two travelled to a nearby area.
He gestured, smiling, at some fish. Brightly colored and clearly not very good for food. You swam around them, before being dragged again.
A/n: accidentally posted this so I'm cutting it short, i hope its still okay tho

Amhrán Taillte Garbha, Faraoise agus Draíocht (A Song of Wastelands, Forests and Magic)
Ceol & Liricí: Travolta-P
Bunteideal: 荒野と森と魔法の歌
Amhránaí: Hatsune Miku
Forais atá beo le beatha glas,
Anois, níl sé ach talamh garbh ina damhsaíonn néal deannaigh
Ó bhun mo chroí, guífidh mé go mbéarfaidh sé arís
Le beatha beaga a cuireann suas le haon rud
Ach ag déanamh caint faoi talamh ag imeacht chun raice
Agus áit lán le cuimhní,
Líonann sé seo mo shúile le deora ag glioscarnach
Lig é dom, ná bí buartha
Má tá sé mo ghlór draíochta, is fidir liom aon rud a dhéanamh
Cuir an chúram mianta agus mothúcháin orm
Agus anois, athróidh mé iad go neart drithleach
Na scamaill a leathan sa spéir,
Gaireann siad ar báisteach agus déanann siad abhainn mhóire
Cuireann siad dath gorm ar an talamh
Sula i bhfad, béarfar a lán beatha nua
Lig é dom, ná bí buartha
Má tá sé mo ghlór draíochta, is féidir liom aon rud a bronnadh
Má tá na mianta agus mothúcháin láidir go leor,
Is féidir linn domhan drithleach a fheiceáil

Sometimes I feel like in pagan spaces there is a tendency to say that something is a well attested to belief in the text but because everyone heard it from someone else who heard it from someone else the text its from gets buried
I've long felt this way about the Earth, Sea, Sky/Talamh, Muir, Neamh cosmology. Like it always felt correct and fits into my conceptions of irish paganism but I just didn't know where it came from.
This page (link) compiles evidence and examples from mythological texts. Genuinely so helpful and affirming.

An Bhuarach - The Spancel in traditional Irish magic, from @ScoilBheanFeasa on ig
Tumblr media
"In traditional Irish magic there are two main types of spancels each going by several names in Irish. A buarach (spancel made from cow tail hairs that is used to magically steal the milk and good luck of a farmer). Or a buarach bháis (spancel made from a strip of skin from a human corpse used to magically make a person fall in love).
A spancel is described as a length of rope used to hobble an animal, especially a cow while milking. In earlier Irish a spancel is known as búarach (bó + árach, cow binding) but also means milking time or early morning time. In modern Irish there are many names for a spancel. A loncaird, luncairt or gad coise are other general names for a spancel. Then there is a buarach (spancel for milking a cow), buairichín (small spancel), iodh fhada (long spancel), iodh (chain spancel). Then there is a coiseagán (calf spancel), cornasc (horn and leg spancel), speir (spancel for an animal's houghs/shins), urchall (spancel for front legs).
In Irish folklore a minichin (pronounced mweenaheen and meaning to make quiet or still) was a spancel made of hair cut from a cow or horse's tail). This hair was boiled and then twisted very hard into a rope known as a súgán, with an eye at each end. A small stick or bone called a buairicín, buarai or buarín is put through the loop and turned underneath to securely fasten the spancel. Though in some accounts a minichin is a stick and buarín a spancel and some spancels were made of rope or straw.
If a spancel was made by the farmer, it was often taken to church to be blessed, especially on Palm Sunday and used on Bealtaine (May Day morning) to milk their cows. If the spancel was made as a piseog to steal a farmer's milk or luck, a hair from each cow was stolen and it was used on Bealtaine Eve or before the Sun rose on Bealtaine Day. There are accounts of women seen in farmers fields going around with a spancel and bucket collecting a hair from each cow or milking one cow from each local farmer along with collecting morning dew from the farmers fields.

hey i'm about to read UTE but I cannot for the life of me remember what happened at the end of DoA. I can't find the book, or anything online. Could i bother you for a summary of the end?
-Never <3
DEAD OR ALIVE SPOILERS
and a long post
Malice (in Alice’s body) kickstarts the Corrival Pillar from the Dark Cathedral. She leaves Alice’s body but Creed captures her in a Soul Catcher.
Back at the Cadaver fight, Cadaver stabs Auger with the Obsidian Blade, and the weapon’s properties spread to him and he becomes Obsidian - then teleports away.
Valkyrie flies into the Activation Wave in order to deactivate it before it expands. She appeared to suffer no ill effects, not becoming the Harpy she saw in the future.
Coda Quell attacks Militsa as he sees her as an obstacle between him and Valkyrie. But because of the Draíocht-boost, Coda is thrown into the Necropolis and dies.
Perfidious Withering offers Martin Flanery the Splash drug for use on his military.
Sebastian is arrested by the City Guard after being ratted out by Tantalus to Commander Hoc. Creed uses the Darquesse society as bait to lure Darquesse, which works, and they capture her.
China, Temper, and everyone else are fugitives, and to top it all off, Valkyrie is now the Child of the Faceless Ones, and a receptacle that brings them into the world. Weeks later, the Faceless Ones can be seen standing over every major city on Earth.
If you can, I’d recommend reading Grimoire, because as well as being incredibly funny it also bridges the gap between the books very nicely. Plus, it has some great character art.
@thebeautyofthegods i do hope this is adequate
