"RUSSIAN GUITARS FOR THE BEATLES"

John Lennon with a Russian acoustic guitar with nylon strings — a gift from the USSR Embassy in Great Britain (October 1965)

Any stories related to The Beatles and Russia are interesting. Especially when it's not nonsense and fantasy - like Lyudmila Zykina's friendship with the Beatles - but a real event.

Our story began with such a small article in a British newspaper in 1965. I put its name in the title.

"Three guitars arrived in London yesterday – they are intended for members of The Beatles John, George and Paul, and these guitars are from Russia. They were sent by fans working at the musical instrument factory. The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein said yesterday about this: “We always thought that Russian teenagers were not recommended to listen to our beat music. Obviously, we were wrong.”

John, George and Paul will be presented with these guitars today at EMI Studios. Paul McCartney said: “The fans are aware of our business. They even remember that I play guitar for lefties.” Will the Beatles use these guitars at a concert? “Well, it depends on what kind of guitars they are,” George Harrison replied. “But we are just shocked by this gesture.”

This article was written on the eve of the guitar award, so some inaccuracies are understandable. In fact, there were four guitars – the fans did not forget about Ringo! The guitars turned out to be six–strings with nylon strings - so their use at concerts was unlikely.

But who exactly sent them and how they were able to get into the hands of the Beatles is the question. Judging by the photos, these were guitars made at the Leningrad Lunacharsky Folk Musical Instrument Factory.

I caught sight of another text accompanying a photo of the Beatles with Russian guitars:

The translation looks like this: "1965: Russian acoustic: An article by George Harrison published in 1987 in Guitar Player magazine notes that at the end of '65, “all four Beatles received Russian guitars with nylon strings as a gift. In the photo, they are in the studio during the recording of the song “Day Tripper” and the album “Rubber Soul”. “It is doubtful that these inelegant-looking tools have been used anywhere. It was reported that this was a gift from the Russian Embassy in London. Instruments of the same type as other similar guitars are featured in Bell's 1961 music catalog. Their whereabouts are unknown."

In any case, it would be interesting to know who exactly organized such a gift. Harrison said it right – it was a gesture in those days…
