#Critical Issues Poll
Text
Not that long ago, most Republicans were content to declare the U.S. as a nation founded on Judeo-Christian values. Then the Judeo somehow got lost along the way, as the party became more comfortable with anti-Semitism in its ranks. Now the party is moving toward a full-on embrace of theocracy, with candidates like Pennsylvania gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano (R) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) proudly calling themselves Christian nationalists.
In that belief, Mastriano and Greene apparently have the support of the majority of the rank and file. A new University of Maryland Critical Issues Poll finds that 61% of Republicans would happily declare the U.S. a Christian nation, even though nearly as many recognize that such a move would violate the U.S. Constitution.
The support breaks along predictable lines. The older the Republican, the more likely the support. More than 70% of the Silent Generation and Boomers would declare the U.S. a Christian nation. That dwindles to just over half of Gen Z Republicans.
There are even Democrats who believe in calling the U.S. a Christian nation: a paltry 17%. Whether they believe in the same principle of nationalism that animates the GOP or just think it sounds nice is unclear.
The Republicans’ affinity for Christian nationalism is tightly related to white grievance politics. The poll surveyed more than 2,000 people. Of those, whites who believe white people faced more discrimination are more likely to call for a Christian America. Nearly 60% of those surveyed who said white people have been discriminated against a lot more than other groups in the past five years want to call the U.S. a Christian nation. Only 38% of those who don’t believe that agree.
The poll also underscores a new reality. Christian nationalism is more about politics than religion.
The fact of the matter is that there are far more people identifying themselves as evangelicals than people who actually practice their faith. About two-thirds of Protestant Republicans who attend church only once a year identify as evangelicals. Theology actually has almost nothing to do with a lot of evangelical belief. Evangelicals aren’t going to battle over questions of transubstantiation. It’s about culture war and politics.
In that sense, Christian nationalism is the perfect vehicle for the would-be authoritarians in the GOP. It cloaks the thirst for naked power in a crucifix. For years, the right has insisted that the separation of Church and State was a lie promulgated by godless leftists. (It was a belief expressed by Thomas Jefferson, whose opinion the right has spent years trying to explain away.) It created a fiction that the Founders were divinely inspired believers but many were more informed by the Enlightenment than by Christianity.
The myth is an important part of how people justify the politics. It’s the backdrop that gives them permission for their actions. If the U.S. is a Christian nation, then defending it from those you consider non-Christian forces – like LGBTQ people – is entirely permissible, even if those people are themselves people of faith.
Needless to say, the new poll gladdens the hearts of extremists.
Tumblr media
But let’s not get confused. The urge to call the U.S. a Christian nation has nothing to do with Christianity. It has everything to do with feeling threatened by a changing society and an unwillingness to be accommodate those changes.
Instead of trying to show the rest of the country why their beliefs are worth following by example, Christian nationalists simply want to impose them on everyone else. For them the Golden Rule is only three words long: Do unto others.

Why did I recently realize that Sumi tying the ribbon back in her hair when officially joining the group actually kinda parallels to when she did it during her first session with Maruki but the contexts are different??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Dr. Maruki, I... I want to become Kasumi." || "I want to live life as Sumire!"
I'm honestly having trouble grasping why people want the ribbon to be replaced besides "she's still clinging onto/dependent on her sister" which... Is not why she chose that? She even spells it out at the end of her SL: It's in memory of her sister along with her newfound promise and resolve. This is part of why her putting it back on works for me and not a sign of dependence on Kasumi.
Tumblr media
Especially since having it all the way down just showcases her depression and mental state so it's like... Huh?
Tumblr media
I can see it materializing her outfit being a mix of her admiration to Joker and her growing newfound promise to Kasumi. Cendrillon being brought back with Kasumi's spirit can kinda support that too imo.
Sure, a redesign would still be a massive improvement but still it's more about that particular bit and the ribbon which commonly used in criticisms and arguments. Idk, it just works somehow despite the writing issues and a lovely parallel!

i'm rewatching that show you're taking a poll on and taking notes and you know it's deeper than i thought it was, which is a nice surprise? like. oh, there's real substance there. despite the fact that i have to blush my way through the entire thing, haha
Oh my dear anon. Hello. I put that poll under a read more and I said "don't ask questions you don't want the answer to" twice for this very reason.
I stopped watching only about 2 weeks ago so I haven't missed out on that much so far and you've kind of hit on the main reason I dropped it in the first place: the show is not as deep as it thinks it is.
I'm very glad that you found depth and substance in that show. But what I see when I watch it is a puddle disguising itself as a lake.
(I thought about writing every single reason why I think that but decided to spare you the dissertation because I don't want to ruin anyone's enjoyment of the show. I am happy to expand if asked but I will reiterate not to ask questions you don't want the answer to. If you're super curious, I did also already write a tiny bit about my problems with the show here.)

You say in your bio you're an historian? You should really be aware why that hp games antisemitism is a problem
What being a historian (and also having a classics degree) tells me is that most of you are terrible at research and have no idea about the origins of goblins, and are just digging for anything you can to be mad at JK Rowling. When you can’t do that, you then harass people online instead of actually doing anything productive, because that’s easier for you than actually performing any meaningful activism.

Like, yeah, we do have a real issue with the need to elevate everything we like to a certain level of importance that it doesn't really deserve in online queer spaces and I think it mostly has to do with the fact that...nobody wants to admit they really don't know much about our history so they latch onto things that were formative for them. Which tbh is fine. If you think Riverdale is foundational queer media that takes no skin off my nose. The problem comes when, because this piece of media is important to you, you cannot stand to hear criticism of it in any capacity, which leads me to my next point. We also have an issue with thinking critically about older queer media and the circumstances surrounding its creation in online queer spaces, which again, is a result of not knowing much about queer history. People love Keith Harring but if you bring up his relationship with the young men he used for his art and his treatment of Latino men and boys in general, suddenly, everybody wanna get quiet. People will sensationalize Dorian Corey's story and make her a spectacle out of "love" for her but won't even bother to learn about the culture she was a part of. Y'all LOVE talking about Stonewall and Marsha P but you know NOTHING about the history of S.T.A.R.R and how she was treated by some of yall "queer elders". These issues will continue if we don't make a genuine effort to educate ourselves about our history and allow ourselves to think critically about the media we consume, even if it's important to us. Ain't no way in hell a discussion like this should have resulted in vicious transmisogyny and threatening to call Black people slurs over a fuckin tumblr poll, yall are all way too fucking grown to be acting like this.

as someone seeing all this from the outside, whats trnasphobic about people hating homestuck? I've never seen it associated with trans people and I cant see anything about this hussie guy who made it being trans
hussie is in fact trans (nonbinary, any pronouns, apparently psycholonials goes into more detail about how they feel re: gender but i haven't played it) and if you've never seen it 'associated with trans people' idk skill issue there is a very large and vocal trans fanbase for it and historically has been to the point that it's a meme that a bunch of transmascs who transitioned circa 2015 are called dave and are embarassed if you ask why. that said i don't think there's anything transphobic about hating homestuck, there's lots of perfectly good reasons to hate homestuck or hussie. parts of homestuck are horrifically racist. some of hussie's older work is even worse. the ending sucks. the epilogues suck and also waste much more of your time. huge chunks of the comic itself are just not very good even aside from the racism. you can feel however you want about homestuck idc
where transmisogyny comes into it is 1. poeple have been harassing and ridiculing a bunch of trans women on here for having a book club wher ethey read it and 2. moreover and what i have mainly been posting abt this in relation to is that there are many people whose reaction to dtwof losing in a meme poll is to go on various different varietals of 'the degenerate ingrates are not appreciative of the True Real Queer Culture, how far we have fallen' rants, which is indicative of a kind of cisbian homonationalist reactionary attitude that elevates the 80s/90s usamerican cis gay scenes to the status of an unattainable mythic past. & this is an attitude that basically goes hand in hand with transmisogyny because they treat any of the many, many warranted criticisms about how transmisogynistic the culture and scenes they idolize were with extreme condescencion and hostility.

❤️ You were a descendant of the Queen who took up after the Queen of Hearts passed away years ago, and ever since then, your family has ruled the Queendom of Roses without faults
❤️ Because of fears of betrayal and such, your family never really spoke to many others outside of work, but, when you received a letter claiming your advising attendance at Night Raven College, you jumped at the opportunity
❤️ When you arrived, you suffered far less criticism from Riddle than others, and many believed that he feared you because of your ranking, he didn't want to upset his mother
❤️ But, when you guys started to befriend one another and began your relationship, you figured out the true reason he didn't behead you as much as others
❤️ He didn't wish to bring any shame to his family, and when you saw how down he looked about that thought, you admitted to faking so many smiles, just because it was what your ancestor, known as the White Queen did
" I guess we aren't that different after all, huh? "
❤️ Ever since that day, you have recommenced having his parents meet yours, and, despite his constant pleas of you letting it go, you finally relented and asked for him to at least help you send a letter to his mother
❤️ Riddle's mother not-shockingly wasn't fond that her son began to see someone without her permission, but, when she realized how prominent you were in their homeland, she had to relent and allow your relationship to proceed, she didn't need the royal guard on her back

🎮 How did this guy manage to get your attention? The world may never know
🎮 As a higher-ranked official, specifically a descendant of the man who took the thrown of the King of the Underworld after his demise, you were normally thrown into many different affairs, making you try hiding away constantly
🎮 Thankfully, your prayers of freedom were answered, and you got an offer to join Night Raven College, and your family couldn't hold you back, since you gave the school a solid yes behind their backs
🎮 When you were organized into Ignihyde with Idia, he was very intimidated by you, since you were so popular among students
🎮 Though, funnily enough, you would go running away from the many students who wanted to ask you for things, and you would end up running into a nearby room, one in which Idia was occupying alone
🎮 You guys started speaking about how much you enjoyed a game and you ended up becoming quite close, in which you helped with with building Ortho's mechanical body
🎮 Idia was definitely nervous when you started your relationship, to him, you were the best thing to exist; powerful - yet caring, and quite smart when it comes to strategies, while he was, in his opinion, odd and not-worthy of you
🎮 Most of the time, he pushes your ranking in the Island of Woe, if you could push his issues aside, then he could put everything about you aside as well!

🐍 Many feared you because of how logical you were, you were rumored to be able to see through any kind of lies or, really, any kind of deceit, no matter the person
🐍 Jamil had heard about you mainly from Kalim and his parents, as you were a far-off relative of the Al-Asim's, specifically, you were a descendant of the Sultana from hundreds of years ago
🐍 You were being forced to heir the thrown, since your older brother had been assassinated a few years prior, and when you came by for a summer to spend time with your younger distant cousins, he would be lying if he said he wasn't fond of you
🐍 Whenever you noticed that Kalim was getting to be too much for Jamil, you would grab the young ball-of-sunshine and ask if he wanted to play with his younger siblings and you
🐍 Due to your far different rankings, you kept your relationship hidden, as you didn't wish for your family's council to end up punishing his family, who had done nothing wrong
🐍 Jamil would normally grab you and him a small cup of tea and relax with you on the balcony of your room, keeping the silence either in progress or cut it out with conversations about your lives and dreams of the future
🐍 And while your relationship may be in forcible secrecy, you shared your dream of living with Jamil by your side, either ruling over your homeland or relinquishing your role to one of your younger siblings to travel with your one and only

🐺 Jack knew quite a bit about you, as his parents loved to tell stories of the news to him and his younger siblings as they grew older, and they just made the news more recent and a hint more mature as Jack aged
🐺 So, when you arrived at Night Raven College at the same time as him, he was quite excited when you were organixed in the same dorm as him, Savanaclaw
🐺 He noticed how casually you would speak to Leona, and that was when the pieces of his mind actually realized just who you were
🐺 As the second-in-line heir to the Shaftlands, and the offspring of the descendant of the Fairest Queen and a high-ranking raven beastman, you had met the two heirs of Sunset Savannah early on in life, prompting a strong friendship between you and the lion-beastman to emerge
🐺 Jack began to speak with you when he saw how you trained your unique magic to be stronger than it was at the start of the year, and he began to train with you
🐺 One day, his siblings decided to come by for a visit, they stopped and starred at you as your boyfriend chuckled and introduced you, and after hearing your role and name, the young boy and girl began to bombard you with questions on your life as a royal member
🐺 The wolf-beastman smiled and watched as you spoke gently with his siblings as his grandparents and parents asked him how you met and when you began your relationship
🐺 He just smiled and answered them honestly, and he hoped one day his family could meet yours, and the kids you were currently playing with were adults as your own children took their places...

wait wait, what’s the change tumblr did to the reblog chains ? 🥲🥲🥲 I’m so lost
okay so basically, let's say you see a post on your dash
before the update, if you clicked on a url, you could do 3 things:
view that specific reblog on the blog you follow (A)
view the previous reblog on the blog A reblogged it from (B)
view the original post on op's blog (C)
Tumblr media
however, staff recently implemented an update where clicking on a url no longer takes you to that specific post. now, clicking on a url just takes you to the blog itself.
this means that you now get 5 things:
Tumblr media
view ONLY that specific reblog on the blog you follow (A) -> changed location near header. also, you will now ONLY see that post and nothing else
view ONLY the original post on op's blog (C) -> changed location near header. you will only see that post and nothing else. and ONLY if the op hasn't deleted it, otherwise it just shows an error
view the blog of the person you follow (D)
view the blog of the person D reblogged it from (F) -> option B no longer exists
view the blog of the op (E)
you might be thinking: "cool! i get more options so that's good, right?" well, no.
there are SEVERAL things wrong with this and it goes beyond the prev tags issue
1) first of all, it's counterintuitive that A and C changed locations to the area near the header, especially if your userbase was already used to the previous functions. it just seems like horrible UX design to me but let's put that aside for now.
2) as you can see, option B which allowed you to see the previous reblog of a post no longer exists.
now, if you click on the previous url, you will just be taken to their entire blog. you can no longer view the post itself.
someone asked staff about this, and they replied in this post that the change was INTENTIONAL and if you want to view the previous reblog you would have to "go through the notes view".
to borrow what someone else said:
Tumblr media
basically, this update just killed the prev tags culture in one fell swoop.
(sure, you can still use it to reply directly to the person you're reblogging from, but it's now literally useless to use "prev tags" for everyone else involved. sure, you can choose to copy tags or peer review them, but again, if people will have to copy them then the less people are likely to use them, and not every prev lends itself to peer-reviewing imo)
now, listen. i know not everyone likes the prev tags culture, but it just seems like such a poorly-thought decision to kill a culture that like... half of your entire userbase uses (see this poll as a quick reference) and that's UNIQUE to your site and sets you apart from other social media.
but it's also not even just prev tags. let's say you want to remove an annoying addition on a post's reblog chain? you can no longer do that.
however, i feel like this is the most important point:
regardless of how you may feel about the prev tags culture, the pure UI aspect of it should remain
what i mean by this is: even if you don't like prev tags, simply 1) being able to access the reblog chain, and 2) clicking on a post and actually have it take you to their BLOG (and not just a page with that one single post) is literally essential navigation.
this update threatens to drive down user engagement (which is already critically low) by making it harder to navigate. which is actually another point:
3) even if you click on A and C now to view those specific posts, it's NOT the same as it used to be.
before, you could view the reblog directly on the blog. so you could just scroll down and see the other posts leading up to it. now, you will be taken to a page where you will ONLY see that post and nothing else.
but also, you can no longer easily navigate other people's blogs.
you know how sometimes you would see like 50 notifications of someone going through an entire tag on your blog? that's going to happen a lot less, i'm afraid.
let's suppose you want to go to op's blog because they're an artist and you want to see more of their art. so you click on C and see that the tag they use for posts with their art is "#my art"
cool! before, you could just click on that tag and immediately view ALL of their art as long as the posts have that tag.
but now, if you click on that tag, it will take you to the ENTIRE tumblr tag with literally all the posts that everyone in the history of time has tagged with that specific tag.
now, to do the same thing that just took 2 clicks before, you would have to: click on C to view the post -> look for the tag you want to navigate -> click E to view their whole blog -> scroll and look for a post that just so happens to have that tag (the search function is literally useless) and hope to god that there's a recent one or you'll have to scroll for ages or simply give up -> if you happen to find it, click on that tag to navigate their posts.
you see how this is counterproductive, right? you see how this can literally drive down engagement with content creators, right?
if you make people's blogs harder to navigate, you will literally drive down the number of likes and reblogs on their posts, which have already been steadily declining for years now.
4) options D and E to view the blogs and not the posts are literally useless because you could already access other people's blogs before. you just had to click on their url to view their blogs starting from that specific post AND you could choose to just refresh it to view their newest posts.
either way, the change just seems completely unnecessary. and again, it's not just about the prev tags culture but about basic UI.
so what can we do about it?
i normally don't advocate for flooding staff with messages but i do feel like this is one of the worst updates staff has ever done (and that's saying something) and something needs to change.
even if they don't retcon the entire update, that's fine, but staff could at least add the option to view the reblog chain as a different feature (maybe even opt-in) for example. there are better ways to go about this than just axing an entire existing feature.
also, this same issue that makes it harder to navigate blogs needs to change. i feel like content creators will be especially affected by this unless this changes because you can no longer easily navigate their tags, so it will inevitably drive down engagement.
so please, contact staff and let them know we want a change.
you can contact support here!
here's a template for a possible message you could send, but feel free to edit it. (under category you can choose "Feedback")
Hi, I would like to politely request a change to the recent update that affects the reblog chain of posts. Regardless of the "prev tags" culture itself, the UI aspect of being able to view the reblog chain of a post is essential for navigation on this website. Even adding it as a separate, opt-in feature would be a huge help. Additionally, clicking on a post and then on one of the tags now takes you to the entire tumblr tag instead of the tag on that blog, which makes it harder to navigate blogs. Both of these issues have the potential to drive down user engagement by actively making it harder to navigate Tumblr, but especially for content creators. I hope you can do something to address these issues as soon as possible. Thanks in advance and have a nice day.
also, if you can and/or want, reblogs are appreciated to help spread the word!
that's pretty much the gist of the issue from what i've seen, but if anyone else has anything to add or a different way we could contact staff to make ourselves heard, please feel free to let me know!
TLDR: it's not just about prev tags, this update affects basic functionality and content creators as well
