Please do not watch TikTok and Instagram videos and buy a chinchilla because you think they look so cute and friendly. On several chinchilla forums lately, I've seen questions like, "I've had my chinchilla for 2 weeks now. When does it start getting cuddly and friendly?" The answer is "never."
Chinchillas are not cuddly and friendly. They do not like being touched. They will tolerate light scritches and that's about it. The ones you see being so cute on TikTok? Those are like 20 seconds cut from hours of footage of the chinchilla being a little jerk. A small number of mostly male chinchillas are a little bit calmer, but generally, they are extremely nervous prey animals who will never completely trust you.
I'm saying this as someone who has owned and loved chinchillas for over 10 years. They are adorable and fluffy and also often bitey little assholes who pee at you when they're mad. I love them, but they are not good beginner pets, and they are definitely not for everyone.
Ogh i want so many animals. right now the one i want the most is the pink toe tarantula that we have at the store thats basically already my pet but i also want one million others
gonna be my last post as I'll still be actively mourning the loss. my first morning without him is incredibly lonely, don't know what it is but in the back of my mind i can still hear him huffing and panting through the humid summer heat-
one downside of deciding one of my OCs' dads is a dentist is that I've spent more time than I ever would have expected thinking about the biology of different fantasy races' teeth
This seems like a great educational opportunity for chinchilla lovers and potential owners. That idea that a chinchilla will die if it gets wet? It’s a doofy myth. Chewie here is about eight years old and this is probably the fifth or sixth time she has managed to dunk herself over her lifetime.
And before anyone yells at me for “letting this happen,” I would like to point out that I was in that bathroom with her for several flippin’ HOURS of her bouncing around, as happy and agile as can be, only for her to finally mistime a jump and do a looney tunes slide into the water. Much to my momentary alarm and later amusement.
Anyway, she has never suffered any ill effects from her watery encounters; I just dry her off and keep her FAR away from her dust bath, as I assume that would create Problems until she has dried off naturally. So if you let your chinchilla loose in the bathroom with the toilet seat up or the bath drawn, don’t fret! They just jump out again and they dry off like any other mammal. (Yes even the tub; I think I can safely confirm from two incidences that chinchillas know how to swim. But of course don’t leave them ALONE in a room with a bath, better safe than sorry! They can 100% jump out of toilets though, can confirm.)
This has been a myth-debunking PSA with Pikachewbacca. I’m gonna go give her a pretzel stick to console her in her dampness, though she seems quite philosophical and has just finished a refreshing run on her wheel.
i’ve only seen and held those extremely tiny robo hamsters (my friend had one named francis) so when i first saw a regular sized hamster IRL i got so scared
