Stories like that doesn’t happen very often. The chances of recreating the history written by this French poet under the name of Charles Perrault and entitled “Cinderella” was close to none, and yet – Y/N Y/L/N was the fruit of just such an unlikely union.
Her mother was a woman that the ton was more than quick to judge and call the woman fell, just because of her profession. An actress. A word that hardly escaped the mouths of higher class ladies and nobles. It was one thing to enjoy the woman of said profession skills while social event, and the other to acknowledge her presence in the society.
In simple words – the doors were closed for her to ever step out of her social class.
However, life has its own twisted ways of defying and swiftly changing the reality. The flow of the world river is unstoppable and with the right amount of patience, and with the few drops of persistence, water can change the riverbed.
Y/N’s father-to-be, young lord Y/L/N, the firstborn, attended one of the play in the London’s theater, performed due to the Queen’s upcoming birthday celebrations. Instantly getting enamored with young Y/N’s mother-to-be skills and range of emotions. Her talent and beauty, connected with the fact that she was far from the leeches he learned ladies from the ton to be, shone so bright in his eyes, that defying all the laws and rules set ages prior, he forgot his destiny, upbringing and duties to family, started courting the young woman and in time took her as his wife.
Obviously, the fact never got accepted and yet, his lordship, lord Y/L/N got the leverage in the fact he has been the only son and an heir to the title.
Therefore, Y/N, was and simultaneously was not a lady.
Which made her upbringing and consequently her entire life rather complicated.
The young girl took after her mother in the terms of talent and beauty and after her father in terms of humor and boldness.
Which, as you, dearest gentle reader, might already expect, was the reason, that her existence was to get even more complicated.
***
One foot in one class, second in the other Y/N never felt like she belonged in either. Breaking societal rules just like her father.
Ever at the youngest age she came to a conclusion that her mere being in the world was rather unwelcomed reminder of the misalliance. No governess wanted to teach her. No young girls her age coming from good families wanted to be in her presence. Her own grandpapa and grandmamma never showed any interest in meeting her. Consequently, five year Y/N was practically being raised on the scene. Listening to her mamma’s stories about the wonders of theater, art, performing and becoming someone else to escape the reality that tended to be cruel, judgmental and unforgiving.
Especially the last part was to be remembered.
Especially when her mother felt ill and died before Y/N could reach adulthood. Followed suit by her father, lost in grief after losing the love of his life.
Leaving their daughter all alone, forced by the vicious circumstances to tend by herself.
At first, her noble and very elderly grandparents from father’s side wanted (forced) to take her under their wings, but Y/N quickly realized that they wished to raise her for a noble lady with every method possible. Corporal punishment included. Their simple reason behind the action was to not let a wild girl run around and slander their name.
She run away after less than a month putting on a different last name, an alias of sort.
And maybe those set of conditions, fueled by the need to keep her parents’ legacy was the reason that upon reaching the age that young ladies were presented to the queen and debuted in the ton, Y/N started her shameful profession as a model in London Art Academy as well as a part-time access.
***
No matter the world’s opinion on her, she was keeping her head high, being proud of who she was, never hiding and refusing to bow down to the nobles, included the one who believed that a model was just another term for courtesan with the clear intent on acting on those convictions.
While other professional girls were timid and working out of sheer necessity to support themselves, their living, and commonly, their children, Y/N refused to hide, making quite a comfortable life for herself, given all the misevents. And as shocking as it may have been in a XVIII century London – thriving without a husband.
Enjoying every second spent in the sacred temple dedicated to art and education of  the future geniuses of the field, taking greatest pride in participating in the process. Sacrificing her heart, mind and soul to the muses.
***
Y/N’s favorite days were those, when she was dressing in fantasy dresses and costumes fulfilling her mother’s words about becoming someone else, taking a mask, a life of an imaginary character, a shell that was to be filled to her own liking. And with her late father’s sense of humor she loved the ability to create characters that somehow mocked the people she knew in real life.
An older lady, busy with everyone’s interest?
A respected matron, whose life’s greatest ambition was marrying her daughters into the noble family?
A royalty with indomitable character and imposing her will without any embarrassment?
All welcomed.
And yet – there were also those specific art lessons for high-born gentlemen that were focused on anatomy. And those never required any intricate outfits at all, except maybe a tiny, thin piece of fabric, reveling more skin than it was societally savory.
***
Y/N might not have had the tiniest waist or the prettiest hair or delicate, fragile figure.
And many student were unsatisfied with said fact (those were the mentioned ones connotating model with hetaira).
And those were also the ones making her smirk under her nose. As if she didn’t know those gentlemen tended to engage in a different kind of art, that has little to zero connection with painting on canvas. Besides, in some cases, if the gentlemen’s  other skills were similar to those they showed in class …. poor wives.
However, there was one of them that seemed a little lost in the place. Not because he did not belong, since his talent was undeniable. It was rather because, unlike anyone else, he never said anything even mildly mean to her. Unlike anyone else he was treating her like a human being and not a chunk of flesh Unlike anyone else, she was a woman to him.
Well, maybe not in that sense of the word, but still a woman.
***
He was watching her with sparkles in his eyes that followed her own, no matter how much she was averting her gaze.
Beautiful.
Not like Daphne with her fair, smooth skin, rosy lips and silky hair.
No.
Y/N, as he learned her name was, was like a force of nature. Untamed. Powerful. With fire in her gaze and statuesque figure making her look like a goodness of war.
Athena.
And he was captivated by the internal strength and resilience that radiated through the whole room, reaching even the dimly lit corner of the classroom he found shelter in. Utterly unable to tear his eyes of her. Noticing the smallest details and blemishes on her skin, that only inflamed the fire of his interest.
Oh, to have a piece of her attention.
But she was a model. And he was a lord, even if only a second son, deprived of the title. And even if she didn’t know it, her obvious pride would never allow her to approach him. A man from a higher class she learned to be incomprehensible in their love for worldly pleasure, driven by lusciousness, believing themselves to be above anyone else.
She would be more then delighted to take said men down a notch, but regardless of her pride, fire and independent nature, merely one ungrateful word would cause her to loose the job she loved so much.
Nonetheless, Benedict was neither terrene either the one to give up once his mind was made.
And he made it his personal pursuit to meet her.
***
“Lady Y/N.”
She raised an eyebrow at the voice coming from above her head when she was picking up the utensils left everywhere by reckless and uncaring students, used to being served.
“Surely you are joking my lord?”
“And why would I be joking?”
“I am not a lady and you are aware of that considering the circumstances. And if your lady mother—”
“My lady mother is occupied by my brother’s wife searching quest.”
“Oh yes, your brother, the viscount Bridgerton.”
“Mh. So you know who I am, don’t you?” Benedict’s ego went a little higher in the sky.
“Oh my lord, shall you expect me to be deaf and blind to miss the news of the season?”
“I—” the ego crashed down on the ground
“I may surprise you further then, my lord. I am quite capable when it comes to reading. The skill I use for more than merely enjoying Lady whistledown’s brochures, however I do enjoy the style of writing she presents. Quite talented with the narrative.”
“So you are not only a model but also a writer, lady Y/N?”
“And in my free time I also serve as a charlady. A woman of many talents.” She pointed out to the dirty pencils and accessories in her hands
"Such a surprising thought that-"
"That a woman can in fact have some more ambition than marrying into a noble family?"
"You do sound like one of my sisters..."
“Your sister surely is a smart woman."
Benedict shook his head with a smile, gaze pinned to the floor to avoid laughing and somehow offending his companionship.
“Which one of those gentlemen influenced your opinion this heavily?” Benedict grinned
“Excuse me?”
“Just reveal his name to me and I shall demand satisfaction”
This sentence actually made her laugh a little and before they realized what was happening they were both chuckling in the middle of the empty art classroom as if they were from the same class without any social barriers in-between.
“You’re Benedict Bridgerton.”
“And you are Y/N Y/L/N.”
“Indeed, At your service” she bowed in a very funny and very untrained way. “you must have put yourself through a great deal of trouble to learn my deepest secret.”
“And how entertaining it was to do so.”
“Was it?” she titled her head narrowing eyes a little studying his face. “that makes me wonder the purpose of said action.”
“Will you let a man keep a bit of his own secrets?”
“I must refuse to do so.”
“And this is precisely what I have been expecting to hear from you.”
“Are you challenging me now, my lord?”
“Not for a duel if that’s what-“
“It’s not.” She cut him out with a smile “now, If you forgive me, Bridgerton, I have my duties to tend to.” She bowed and with hands full of remnants of the art class started walking away.
“I shall hope to see you in the next class?” he called after her
“I  believe you said your family is occupied with your brother’s marriage …..? Shall you not be invested in those?”
“I—” dear lord, how was it possible that this woman was taking words out of his mouth this effectively? And he believed himself to be the witty one of the siblings.
“Life is full of mysteries my lord and trying to predict what may happen In a week seems like an exercise in futility.”
She send him the last smile and disappeared for good, leaving Benedict with the lingering sense of dissatisfaction.
And suddenly making him forget about the fact that he has been considering renouncing the academy membership Anthony have so generously provided him with.
Having gained additional motivation, he was more determined to persevere.

93 Of The Best Oscars Dresses Of All Time
https://www.elle.com/uk/fashion/celebrity-style/g26388237/best-oscar-dresses-ever/
Thanks for the message, Anon. 😃 I loved her 2020 ensemble… whilst never losing sight of fashion sense’s subjectivity (a sentiment that really hits home this London Fashion Week 😖).
Here’s Number 17:

Designer: Valentino / Year: 2020
Numbers 1 through 5 are under Elle’s text. Numbers 6 through 16, and 18 through 93, live in the link.
93 Of The Best Oscars Dresses Of All Time
From Barbra Streisand's exquisite Arnold Scassi pantsuit to Halle Berry in Elie Saab, we've collected the best Oscars dresses of all time.
For many, the Oscars awards ceremony is hotly anticipated for its choice of winners. Cinephiles discuss intently if Brendan Fraser's comeback role in The Whale will nab him Best Actor In A Leading Role, or if Paul Mescal will pip him to the post. Others tune in for the meme-making cultural moments, be it a slap heard around the world, or a calamitous misreading of 'Moonlight' as 'La La Land' (it could happen to anyone, right?).
But for us, and we suspect you too, it's the sport of red carpet dressing that keeps us coming back for more. Having the ability to promote (or demote) a near-unknown to a leading lady in the blink of a ballgown, the power of a stellar styled look cannot be understated. Be it Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy in 1954, Michelle Williams in Vera Wang in 2006, or Lupita Nyong'o in Prada there have been some truly marvellous -dare we say history-making - gowns worn by the best actors in the world on the night of the Academy Awards.
So devoted are we to the best dressed stars of the red carpet, ahead of the 96th Academy Awards (taking place on March 10 2024) we've gone through each and every one of them to find the 93 best Oscar dresses ever worn. You're welcome!

Remember… Irish actress Caitriona Balfe looked stunning — as per usual — on the red carpet at the 2020 Oscars in Valentino Haute Couture! The 40-year-old newlywed wore a unique outfit that involved a dress and a blouse when she walked the carpet at her first Academy Awards. She stunned in the black, fishtail-style gown which fell straight down her body in an extremely flattering style. But the strapless dress wasn’t the star of the show: it was the sheer pink blouse she wore over the top! The high-neck blouse was made of a very light material, and fell down to her hips. It also featured a gorgeous, oversized bow which she wore to the left of her neck. Stunning! The model-turned-actress accessorized with silver stud earrings and a matching silver ring and bracelet. Caitriona slicked her beautiful brunette tresses back into a tight bun near the nape of her neck, and polished her look with a bold red lipstick, and red nail polish. What a star! — Hollywood Life

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more … April 9

1476 – Italy: Leonardo Da Vinci and three other young men are accused of sodomy anonymously, but subsequently acquitted.

1821 – The French poet Charles Baudelaire (d.1867), a central figure in nineteenth-century French literature, was born on in Paris (d.1867). Two collections of Baudelaire's poetry continue to intrigue and influence writers: Les fleurs du mal (Flowers Of Evil, 1857) and Le spleen de Paris (Paris Spleen, 1869). In the latter collection, published posthumously, he essentially invented the "prose poem." For a while lived the modish life of a literary dandy on an inheritance from his father, reluctantly joining the Paris boheme when his fortune ran dry.
Speculation continues about his personal life. Some early writers suggested that he died a virgin; many others now believe that he died of syphilis acquired in 1841. He had complicated relations with Jeanne Duvall, a prostitute; Madame Sabatier, a courtesan for the wealthy and socially prominent; and Marie Daubrun, an actress. The poems Duvall inspired portray her as both the apex of beauty and the nadir of evil.
Lesbianism fascinated Baudelaire. He even considered naming his first book of poems Les lesbiennes. "Lesbos," from Les fleurs du mal, celebrates lesbian love and evokes Sappho, who is described as both "mannish" and "beautiful." Further, the speaker challenges the authorities who would "dare" judge those who inhabit Lesbos. Even the gods would not dare to judge these women, he asserts.
Two other poems called "Femmes damnées" also explore lesbianism. Here the lovers, with their disordered souls, must suffer in a world wound tight with rules. The bourgeois considers such women demonic; that alone makes them fascinating to Baudelaire.
Male homosexuality does not receive this kind of direct treatment; gay men can find no equivalent "Lesbos" in his work.
He was probably homosexual himself, or at least Marcel Proust thought so, as did Andre Gide, Roger Peyrefitte, and many others. The floppy cravat that Baudelaire affected became all the rage of European dandies and homosexuals during the first decades of the 20th century, gays having adopted him as their very own at an early date.

1909 – the Australian dancer, actor, director and choreographer Sir Robert Helpmann CBE was born on this date (d.1986). Born Robert Murray Helpman, he added the extra 'n' to avoid his name having 13 letters, at the suggestion of the dance diva Anna Pavlova, who was a devotee of numerology.
He was born in Mount Gambier and also boarded at Prince Alfred College in Adelaide, South Australia. The Helpmann Academy in South Australia, a partnership of the major visual and performing arts education and training institutions in South Australia offering award courses for people seeking professional careers in the arts, was named in his honor.
in 1932 he went to London. He joined the Sadler's Wells, later the Royal Ballet and was a principal dancer from 1933 to 1950. He established a great partnership with Margot Fonteyn, and together with choreographer Frederick Ashton, created many great roles, whilst also occasionally undertaking straight acting roles. Helpmann and Fonteyn toured the United States as principal dancers with the Royal Ballet in 1949 and caused a sensation, making stars of them all.
In 1938, Helpmann met a young Oxford undergraduate while fulfilling an invitation to dance at the university. Immediately drawn to the handsome and intelligent Michael Benthall, the pair formed a relationship that was to last for 36 years until the English theatre director Benthall's untimely death in 1974. The couple lived and often worked together quite openly for the time.
In 1965 Helpmann returned to Australia to become co-director of the Australian Ballet. Since he was Gay and flamboyant, his arrival in what was at that time a very conservative country caused some consternation. Australians were proud of his international fame, but not sure what to make of him personally. His most significant contribution to the development of theatre in Australia was his time with the Australian Ballet. The avant-garde nature and sexual overtones of much of his work unsettled many Australians. He did not endear himself with the comment: "I don't despair about the cultural scene in Australia because there isn't one here to despair about."
Helpmann's obituaries in the Australian media were suitably laudatory, but also reserved. The country paid him the highest final recognition it could by honouring him with a state funeral in Sydney, the eulogy calling him "a genius, an outstanding communicator of unique inspiration and insight. He asserted his rights to pursue a path that improved the quality of life of the nation, and defeated the common herd of detractors." An obituary in The Times in London, characterised his appearance as "strange, haunting and rather frightening", and portrayed him as "a homosexual of the proselytizing kind" whose impact upon a company was "dangerous as well as stimulating", creating fresh headlines in Australia.

1929 – The Utah Supreme Court, although upholding the constitutionality of the 1925 sterilization law, rules that a prisoner caught in the act of consensual sodomy with another prisoner, and who is described as "acting lovingly toward other boys in the prison," can not be sterilized for that reason alone.

1948 – Bernard-Marie Koltès was a French playwright and director (d.1989).
Born to a middle-class family in Metz, his life was violent and anchored in revolt. He took off from home at 20 for a nomadic writing life that began with a stay in New York in 1968. For a social rebel seeking an uninhibited gay experience, the timing was perfect. He returned to New York frequently until his death in 1989. He he had tried his hand at writing as a youth but renounced it, and didn't take to the stage until the age of twenty. He first garnered recognition for his work on a production of Medea (Médée) in 1970.
After seeing the film actress Maria Casarès, he was inspired and resumed writing, completing around ten plays in his lifetime. His first piece, the long monologue, The Night Just Before The Forests, was staged in 1977 at the Avignon Festival, and subsequent productions were put on in collaboration with director Patrice Chéreau.
Koltès's work, based in real-life problems, expresses the tragedy of being alone and of death. Koltes is most famous for The Night Just Before the Forests (La Nuit juste avant les Forêts, 1976), r (1977) and In the Solitude of Cotton Fields (Dans la Solitude des Champs de Coton, 1986). Many of these plays were first directed by Patrice Chereau when he was artistic director of the Théâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre. Koltes also translated into French Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale.
Genet and the absurdists influenced Koltès's writing. Like other absurdist writers, he felt exiled - in his case, as a homosexual in a heterosexual world. In Africa, he saw native cultures being wiped out by European influences. This theme brought forth Black Battles with Dogs. After a visit to America he wrote Quay West (1985), about a brother and sister in a foreign culture. The title and the opening dialogue of that play, about tempting, dangerous life in moldy warehouses on a river, recall the West Street piers of the meatpacking district, and their vast, collapsing sheds that for two decades were sex resorts for venturesome gay men.
The psychopathic killer Roberto Succo provided the inspiration for his final play Roberto Zucco. It was first performed posthumously in Berlin in 1990, directed by Peter Stein. It has since been performed across Europe and the United States.
Although he did not attempt to deny it, Kolteès only ever referred fleetingly to his homosexuality, downplaying this as a motivating factor or theme behind his writing. He was rarely forthcoming about his private life, and what he did say is often contradictory or misleading.
Koltès died in 1989 due to complications from AIDS.

1963 – Marc Jacobs is an American fashion designer. He is the head designer for Marc Jacobs, as well as Marc by Marc Jacobs, a diffusion line, with more than 200 retail stores in 80 countries. He has been the creative director of the French design house Louis Vuitton since 1997. Jacobs is on Time Magazine's "2010 Time 100" list of the 100 most influential people in the world, and ranked 12th on Out Magazine's 2011 list of "50 Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America".
Jacobs, who is openly gay was in a four-year relationship with salesman and retired escort Jason Preston. However, in February 2008, it was reported that Jacobs was engaging in an affair with escort and porn star Erik Rhodes who died in 2012.. Later he was in a relationship with advertising executive Lorenzo Martone. In March 2009, Women's Wear Daily reported that the pair was engaged after a year of dating. Several reports that they got married were later denied. On July 24, 2010, Martone announced via Twitter that he and Jacobs had not been together for two months.
In April 2018, Jacobs proposed to his new boyfriend, Charly Defrancesco, via a flashmob while in a Chipotle restaurant. The flashmob did a routine to the song "Kiss" by Prince. They were married in a lavish wedding held in New York City in April 2019.
Jacobs and Defrancesco purchased a home in Rye, New York in April 2019. The Westchester home was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and is known as the Max Hoffman House.

1999 – Montero Lamar Hill, known by his stage name Lil Nas X, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He rose to prominence with the release of his country rap single "Old Town Road", which first achieved viral popularity in early 2019 before climbing music charts internationally and becoming diamond certified by November of that same year, moving over ten million certified units in streaming and sales combined.
"Old Town Road" spent 19 weeks atop the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the longest-running number-one song since the chart debuted in 1958. Several remixes of the song were released, the most popular of which featured country singer Billy Ray Cyrus. As "Old Town Road" was atop the Hot 100, Lil Nas X came out as gay, becoming the only artist to do so while having a number-one record.
Montero Lamar Hill was born in Lithia Springs, Georgia. He was named after the Mitsubishi Montero. His parents divorced when he was six, and he settled in the Bankhead Courts housing project with his mother and grandmother. Three years later, he moved in with his father, a gospel singer, north of the city in Austell. Although initially reluctant to leave, he later regarded it as an important decision, "There's so much shit going on in Atlanta—if I would have stayed there, I would have fallen in with the wrong crowd." He started "using the Internet heavily right around the time when memes started to become their own form of entertainment"; about when he was 13.
He spent much of his teenage years alone, and turned to the Internet, "particularly Twitter, creating memes that showed his disarming wit and pop-culture savvy." His teenage years also saw him struggling with his coming out to himself as being gay; he prayed that it was just a phase, but around 16 or 17 he came to accept it. He began playing trumpet in the fourth grade and was first chair by his junior high years, but quit out of fear of looking uncool.
In early June 2019, Lil Nas X came out to his sister and father and he felt "the universe was signalling him to do so", despite his uncertainty whether his fans would stick by him or not. On June 30, 2019, the last day of Pride Month, Lil Nas X came out publicly as gay, tweeting: "some of y'all already know, some of y'all don't care, some of y'all not gone [fuck with me] no more. but before this month ends i want y'all to listen closely to c7osure. 🌈🤩✨" The tweet confirmed earlier suspicions when he first indicated this in his track "c7osure". Rolling Stone noted the song "touches on themes such as coming clean, growing up and embracing one's self". The next day he tweeted again, this time highlighting the rainbow-colored building on the cover art of his EP 7, with the caption reading "deadass thought i made it obvious". He was unambiguous in an interview several days later on BBC Breakfast, where he stated that he was gay and understands that his sexuality is not readily accepted in the country or rap music communities.
The response to the news was mostly positive, but also garnered a large amount of homophobic backlash on social media, to which Lil Nas X also reacted. The backlash also came from the hip hop community, drawing attention to homophobia in hip hop culture. In January 2020, rapper Pastor Troy made homophobic comments on the outfit Lil Nas X wore during the Grammy Awards, to which Lil Nas X responded: "Damn I look good in that pic on god."
In January 2023, Lil Nas X tweeted a new statement about his sexual orientation, writing "be [for real] would y’all be mad at me if i thought i was a little bisexual". The next day, he tweeted "that was my last time coming out the closet i promise".

𝐈 𝐒𝐄𝐄 𝐒𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃! 𝐑𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐨, 𝓒𝓻𝓾𝓮𝓵 𝓦𝓲𝓷𝓽𝓮𝓻༄
Aired 02.02.23
Featuring music from American Football, Mitski, Panchiko, Alex G and more!
Listen on Spotify and Apple Music.
From the beginning of quarantine to my trip to New York in 2021, I went through a time in my life that felt like a perpetual winter I would never get out of. Countless nights spent on Minecraft with my friends from California and London, to the endless drives to nowhere with my friends here in Chicago. “Cruel Winter,” encapsulates the music I was listening to during that time. A digitally infused indie soundscape.
The name comes partly from a screenplay I wrote for a screenwriting class I took, and from a playlist I made with my friend Raymond, (who I met in the screenwriting class). It encapsulated this specific sound, a grey and brown with a stark baby blue between the two.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting of with “Brian is The Most Beautiful Boy,” the droning at the beginning takes me straight back to the beginning of the pandemic, mostly in my room playing Minecraft with my friends Jas, Ray and Alfie. I had just gotten my license as well, and sometimes I would take longer coming back from picking the lunches the school gave out for free, just to clear my mind.
“My Friends Don’t Know (I Know They Hate Me)” by dandelion hands was so popular on TikTok during this time. I loved this song and I would listen to the album “It’s All in Your Head,” over and over. It was around then the “Cruel Winter” began to settle in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first run of the show is called “Raymond’s Run,” I met Ray in that online screenwriting class, we became pretty good friends after the class ended, spending hours on Minecraft and Discord. He got me a cracked version of FL Studio and introduced me to a word of music I had never listened to. I can still remember the day I listened to “Deathmetal” and gushing about it to Raymond the next day. Or when Raymond showed me the cassette he wanted to buy from Subsonic Eye’s bandcamp. “Cabin Fever” reminds me of the screenplay I wrote, and the runs I would take in the mornings. Raymond is an incredibly talented guitar player, he could learn a song so quickly. I remember he learned “Beautiful Boy,” by John Lennon, on a call with me and our friend Jas, with a quick glance at the chords. He was working on a folk album around that time and he shared Nick Drake as one of his inspirations for the album. “Parasite” stuck with me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My friend Sasha and Maya would frequently host creative zoom sessions, where we would just spend time working on whatever we wanted.
I would mostly draw, and sometimes write. While they wrote. Sasha introduced me to Car Seat Headrest around that time, and “Twin Fantasy” became an obsession. “Stop Smoking We Love You” transitions well into “Thoroughfare” by Ethel Cain, one of three songs in this set that I didn’t listen to during the pandemic. Though the lyricism encapsulates my mindset during the time. I had a desire to run to California and leave everything behind. I considered not going to college and just running to the west.
That desire was ignited by the screenwriting class I took through Academy of Arts University. There was something special about that class. Where as most zoom classes I had during the time was filled with shut off cameras. Most of the students had their cameras open and were eager to participate. We all had an instagram group chat where we would check in on each other throughout the year. I had met Raymond there and Jas through the class. Just a few weeks after the class ended we played on a Minecraft server Jas had made almost every single night. I met so many people on the server, we would talk and play for hours. I even met my friend Alfie, who’s from London, with them on a Minecraft parkour map.
Tumblr media
Mr. Q, the teacher of the screenwriting class read a screenplay I wrote months after the class ended. (Which I plan to film later this year.) He recommended me Holy Hive sometime later. “Cynthia’s Celebration” has these beautiful drums that are just so rich and beautiful. It reminds me of the feeling I had while taking his class and those nights playing Minecraft. (Brown and a hint of orange).
Tumblr media
“Lens” by Frank Ocean is my favorite song from Frank. I would play this song non-stop. It was my most listened song that year. It reminds me of the directionless drives I would take with my friends. Nate’s car was our go to vehicle. While me and Alonso would control the aux.

I watched “We’re All Going to The World’s Fair” with Jas and Ray.
We hated it. But the music stuck with me. Sasha had already introduced Alex G to me but his music never clicked with me until I watched this movie. “End Song” reminds me of this feeling I had in the lit of my stomach throughout the pandemic. It still hasn’t quite went away.
I had many movie nights during the pandemic. Some with my friend Sarah, others with my childhood best friend B, and others with Ixmati, Annie and Celeste. Sometimes it was spent trying not to fall asleep, and others spent trying not to wake my parents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Two Weeks In December” by Skull Crusher and “Secret” by Waveform* have this specific sound, like the haze that seemed to cover everything during the first few months of the quarantine.
Tumblr media
I never really got into Mitski, but “A Pearl” had been on heavy rotation throughout the year and well into the beginning of the quarantine.
“It’s just that I fell in love with a war,
Nobody told me it ended,
and it left a pearl in my head,
and I roll it every night
just to watch it glow.”
I hate to admit I romanticized the first few months of quarantine and I often find myself looking back. I can’t help to smile. Even though it felt like the world was ending, I didn’t feel alone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My “Cruel Winter” felt like it was nearing it’s end when I listened to “A Lot’s Going To Change” by Weyes Blood. I was graduating high school. I so badly wanted to go back to how it had been before. I was so afraid of what came after. It was during this time where the pandemic was in limbo. The cases had spiked again and everything was in limbo.
American Football was a band I listened to throughout my dive into the lesser known indie artists, at least from my perspective. The perpetual winter ended at the end of summer ‘21. Right before a solo trip to New York with my friends Alonso and Dario. (Or so I thought).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The final run of the set is made up of three songs. “Wintertime” by Brockhampton, “4sure” by Louke Man, and “Thank You Song” by FKA Twigs
“Wintertime” is an unreleased song that was leaked along with the Technical Difficulties tracks Brockhampton did over the quarantine. The songs were on heavy rotation when I would drive. “Wintertime” was the inspiration for my screenplay I wrote during that online class. It was a big idea condensed into a 7 page script if I remember correctly. A fitting metaphor to the big ideas I had during the pandemic but with little outlet to do them.
The last two songs serve as a thank you, to all those friends that helped me get through my “Cruel Winter”, and even though it came back not long after my trip to New York. These people helped me get through it.
Special thanks to Aaron, Alfie, Alonso, Anna, B, Celeste, Daisy., Dario, Erin, Iris, Ixmati, Jas, Marcus, Maya, Mr. Q, Nate, Raymond, Sarah, Sasha, The Screenwriting Guild, and TJ. Even though I couldn’t mention everyone and everything we did together, I am grateful for the memories we made together.

This is the 65 year old “Queen Of Pop”: Madonna has performed on eleven concert tours, she starts her 12th tour to celebrate 40+ Years in music this weekend in London, I will see it in February, she has also done nineteen one-off concerts, nine benefit concerts, and three music festivals. She is the best-selling female recording artist of all time, a Guinness, book of world records honoree, a record breaker, more awards than can be named, with a net worth in 2023 of over 850 million dollars!
Selling more than 300 million albums worldwide, (By the way - most before streaming and social media) Her 14 studio albums have spawned 12 No. 1s and 63 top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, and counting and she earned a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Her music in streaming numbers are growing fast including lots of her previous hits. This past year or so and this summer she has had collaborations with Sam Smith, Dua Lupa, and most recently the summer hit “Popular” with The Weeknd and Playboi Carti which is still climbing and maintaining high positions on a various world charts, some even in the top 10 or 20 it’s becoming another successful hit for her.
Madonna's legacy is more than her music, The seven-time GRAMMY-winner has empowered several generations to own their sexuality and call their own shots; she dared to be different and bending the rules on and off stage, particularly with the merging of sexual freedom and religion. Her fearlessness helped open doors for individuality in pop music, and the other female singers who came after her and beyond, have been influenced by her. Others of her legendary status, like David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, and George Michael are gone, She was the first woman in that status to rule in a very man’s dominated music world! Others like Janet Jackson and Cyndi Lauper have maintained their careers but not like Madonna! On top of being a music artist, she’s been a music mogul, a Director, an actress, an author a fashion and beauty designer and mogul and so much more.
Madonna became a megastar that didn't just rule the world — she changed culture.
This weekend when she makes her glorious return to the stage again, she'll remind the world of her relentless, fight, spirit and fearlessness that made her the standard for nearly every female entertainer on the charts today and in the music scene, regardless of genre.
Madonna has supported gay rights, before it was trendy, pushed sexual freedom, implemented religious imagery, and reshaped feminism at a time when it wasn't trendy to do so. She was cancelled numerous times before that was a thing, banned, censored and beat up and written off by society multiple times - All the while, she never has apologized for her "rebel heart" — solidifying her legacy as the true and original Queen of Pop.
She’s a single mother of 6 kids, she has built a Hospital an Academy for girls, and more. She has raised millions of dollars for a variety of organizations and charities throughout the world including AIDS and HIV organizations, this even in the very beginning of the fight when celebrities did not want to be associated or help in the crisis that was HIV/AIDS - she did!
She continues to have her ray of light foundation and Raising Malawi charities and their programs.
Madonna is a global citizen, an original, there will never be another like her! She continues to show us all how to love, be compassionate, be brave, be ourselves, fight for what is right, and how to reign as queen of pop!

NEW FROM FINISHING LINE PRESS: The Residents by Matthew J. Friday
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/the-residents-by-matthew-j-friday/
The Residents begins with the author’s arrival at the height of the COVID pandemic and explores his new #life as a US resident. The #poems reflect on this new journey and study what being a resident means for other people, flora and fauna. While #Oregon’s inhabitants and #landscape form the basis of many poems, others explore residency in a wider sense, crossing borders near and far away.
Matthew James Friday is a British born writer and teacher. He has an MA in Creative Writing from Goldsmith College, University of London. He has had many poems published in US and international journals from all corners of the world. He has published numerous micro-chapbooks with the Origami Poems Project (US). Matthew is a Pushcart Prize nominated poet. The Residents is his first chapbook. More of his writing can be found at: http://matthewfriday.weebly.com
PRAISE FOR The Residents by Matthew J. Friday
We have been honored to publish Matthew Friday‘s poetry. So I am delighted to celebrate this chapbook of his poems—rich in imagery, voice, and a delightful playfulness with language. The poems connect the conscious mind with the heart ( what Mary Oliver says poetry can do).
–Kimberly Hill Campbell, Editor of Oregon English Journal
The Residents challenges me to look into the world and to realize that I’m connected to it. With depth and weight, Friday’s lyrics exalt the ordinary natural world into something I can grapple and hum with. The Residents is a subtle hurricane of poems that illuminate the mysteries and paradoxes we all might experience while getting a haircut or visiting a pumpkin field, wondering why. Friday writes from a place high above, encompassing all that the land has to offer, yet not so high that he misses pumpkin seeds, hummingbirds, and Easter eggs. These poems are offerings my soul gladly accepts. In the Residents, Friday brings the reader through a glorious expedition of the natural world and that which transcends it. His poems paint lucid images of the natural, while inviting the reader to contemplate the unknown. These poems are a call for awareness in a world that might be too sleepy to wake up. I’ve been a reader of Matthew’s poetry for years, and this collection is his best yet.
–Mike Leyland, School Library Media coordinator, Craven County Schools.
Matthew’s collection of poetry, The Residents, connects the reader with the beauty and power of the natural world, the strangeness of modern life and our alternately sweet or disconnected fellow human beings. He writes with empathy and self-awareness of all he encounters, finding poetic elements in the smallest gestures and actions, as well as the ancient forces of the planet that will outlast us and our temporary dramas. Desperate migrants, unfair privilege, flying birds, rushing water, random hardship, bureaucratic paperwork, a child’s joy in jumping in puddles, unexpected connections between people from different parts of the world—all combine to capture the imagination and stimulate recognition of our shared humanity. Classical literary and mythological references flow through the observations of physics and earth science juxtaposed with human actions, both positive and negative, that in the end are only momentary. Above all, Matthew’s words capture fleeting moments that make life more beautiful in the midst of our current world.

Laurence Olivier, the legendary actor and director, left an indelible mark on the world of theater and cinema. He was a master of his craft, a performer who could captivate an audience with a single glance, a gesture, a word. His legacy lives on today, more than three decades after his passing, a testament to the power of his art and his passion.
Born in 1907 in Surrey, England, Olivier was drawn to the stage from an early age. He began performing in local productions as a teenager, and eventually made his way to London, where he studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama. His breakthrough came in 1929, when he was cast as the lead in "Private Lives" at the Garrick Theatre. From that moment on, he was destined for greatness.
Over the next several decades, Olivier would become one of the most celebrated actors of his time. He was a member of the Old Vic Company, where he starred in a series of Shakespearean plays that showcased his talent and versatility. He brought to life iconic characters like Hamlet, Henry V, and Richard III, imbuing each role with a sense of depth and complexity that was unmatched.
Olivier's talents were not limited to the stage, however. He also became a prominent figure in the world of cinema, starring in and directing some of the most memorable films of his era. His performance in "Wuthering Heights" in 1939 was a revelation, earning him his first Academy Award nomination. He followed that up with a series of unforgettable roles in films like "Henry V," "Spartacus," and "Marathon Man," among others.
But it was his work behind the camera that truly set him apart. Olivier was a visionary director, with an eye for detail and a passion for storytelling that shone through in his films. He brought his love of Shakespeare to the screen, directing adaptations of "Hamlet," "Henry V," and "Richard III," among others. His films were marked by their grandeur and their attention to detail, capturing the essence of the plays while also making them accessible to modern audiences.
Olivier's impact on the world of theater and cinema cannot be overstated. He was a pioneer, a trailblazer who paved the way for generations of actors and filmmakers to come. He was a man of great vision and passion, who poured his heart and soul into his work. He was an artist in every sense of the word, and his legacy lives on today in the hearts and minds of those who love the stage and screen.
But perhaps the greatest lesson we can learn from Olivier's life and work is the importance of following our passions. He knew from an early age that he was meant to be an actor, and he pursued that dream with all his heart. He never lost sight of his goal, even in the face of adversity and criticism. He persevered, and his dedication and hard work paid off.
In today's world, where it's easy to get caught up in the daily grind and lose sight of our dreams, Olivier's example is more important than ever. He reminds us that we all have a purpose, a reason for being, and that it's up to us to discover that purpose and pursue it with all our hearts. He shows us that with passion and dedication, anything is possible.
Laurence Olivier was a master of the stage and screen, a true icon of his time. His legacy lives on today, inspiring countless actors and filmmakers around the world. His artistry and his passion will always be remembered, a testament to the power of the human spirit and the beauty of the arts.

Impact on the “Digital Filters” in the real world
Week 8
Digital filters on social media have profound effects on identity, beauty standards, and societal norms. While they offer creative opportunities, they also raise concerns about body image, authenticity, and the reinforcement of certain beauty ideals (Lord, 2024). As technology evolves, the influence of filters on our digital and physical lives will likely grow, affecting privacy, identity, and self-expression.
Tumblr media
With the concept of 'Snapchat dysmorphia’ (What Is Snapchat Dysmorphia?, 2020),  where individuals seek to emulate their filtered appearances, and the 'digital-forensic gaze' (Lavrence & Cambre, 2020), which describes the scrutiny applied to selfies to determine their authenticity.
One prominent example of the impact of digital filters is the phenomenon known as 'Snapchat dysmorphia' (What Is Snapchat Dysmorphia?, 2020). This term describes the growing trend of individuals seeking cosmetic surgery to resemble their filtered appearances from apps like Snapchat and Instagram. Filters often enhance features by smoothing skin, adjusting facial symmetry, and enlarging eyes, creating an idealized version of oneself. Influenced by these digital enhancements, many individuals develop unrealistic beauty standards. For instance, Dr. Tijion Esho, a well-known cosmetic doctor (Dubai Cosmetic Surgery: Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery in Dubai, n.d.),  has reported a significant increase in requests for procedures that replicate filter effects, such as higher cheekbones and fuller lips (Hosie, 2018).
Tumblr media
Digital filters play a significant role in reinforcing beauty ideals, particularly among teenagers. Social media platforms often propagate certain beauty standards through popular filters that enhance specific features. Teenagers, who are highly impressionable, may adopt these beauty standards as benchmarks for their own appearance. This can lead to a homogenization of beauty standards, where diverse looks are undervalued, and specific traits are overly idealized. According to a study by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Anapol, 2018),  55% of facial plastic surgeons reported seeing patients who wanted surgery to improve their appearance in selfies, highlighting the influence of social media filters on young people.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, while digital filters offer creative opportunities and enhance user experience on social media, they also raise significant concerns about body image, authenticity, and privacy. The concepts of 'Snapchat dysmorphia' and the 'digital-forensic gaze' illustrate the profound impact these filters have on our perception of beauty and authenticity. As technology continues to evolve, it is crucial to consider and address these issues to foster a healthier digital environment that respects individual identity and privacy.

 4 Charles Meere Atlanta’s Eclipse (1938)
A  Joy Eadie 2012   www.shervingallery.com.au       The S.H. Ervin Gallery collection contains two major paintings by significant artist Charles Meere (1890-1961). The Trust is committed to caring for and sharing these important artworks however conservation is costly.
Many Australian art lovers are familiar with Charles Meere’s iconic Australian Beach Pattern, one of the most popular and frequently-reproduced works in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, but are less familiar with his name.
English-born painter Charles Meere came to Australia after serving in France in World War I, training at the Royal College of Art in London, and living for some years in Brittany. While running a commercial art practice in Sydney, he taught at East Sydney Technical College, exhibited with the Society of Artists, and regularly entered the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize competitions.
He painted landscapes, still life and portraits, and a number of paintings in Art Deco style. These are his crowning achievement, notable for their complexity, their use of allusion and ambiguity, and their sheer beauty. The National Trust is fortunate in holding two of them, Atalanta’s eclipse and Triptych, however they are in a fragile state and in urgent need of restoration.
Atlanta’s Eclipse is a remarkable work. It was awarded the Sulman Prize in 1938. Art historian Edward Lucie-Smith has described it as “surely one of the most elegant and accomplished of all the high-style classical compositions produced by Deco artists...”
With its classical subject, its complex allusions in style, imagery and composition, Meere probably designed it specifically for the 1938 inaugural exhibition of the Australian Academy of Art as the ultimate academic painting, not without an element of parody, in the context of the public debate about the Academy.
It depicts the race between Atalanta and Hippomenes, recounted in the Roman poet Ovid’s Metamorphoses. A light-hearted reworking of Guido Reni’s tense, rather dark version of the myth in the Prado, Meere’s painting plays with styles and images from International Gothic, the Renaissance, and Baroque, to the glamorised figures of 20th century advertising.
The complexity, the richness of visual imagination, and the eclectic use of allusion bring to Meere’s beautifully-executed image sophistication quite different from that of the mainstream Sydney modernists of the day.
Triptych is one of several similar works painted in the late 1930s. In a continuous scene spread across three panels, the central panel is given to the Three Graces, personifications of grace, beauty, and festivity, and friends of the Muses. The left panel evokes natural beauty through the putti strewing flowers and the leaping fawns, while in the right panel the gods Hermes with his lyre and Pan with his pipes evoke the Muses.
The Graces, rather sexy and modern, yet have some gravitas; they are elegant, cool and reserved rather than erotic. Triptych presents both classical restraint and charm, giving the kind of delight associated with the Graces themselves.
It is important that these works be restored for the public as exceptional examples of 1930s figurative painting; and to affirm Meere as the creator of a body of work unique in 20th century Australian art.
5 Douglas Annand Sydney Harbour Bridge Celebrations poster (1932)
6 Charles Meere poster for Sydney Empire Games (1938); 7 commemorative stamp issued at the time.

Explore New York City in A Thousand and One—Plus Experience These Additional Four Cinematic Cities on Screen
From Manhattan to Marseilles, these movies take you inside the world’s great metropolises
In A.V. Rockwell’s A Thousand and One (now playing in theaters), Inez (Teyana Taylor) kidnaps her son, Terry, from the foster care system, raising him in Harlem. As he grows into a young man, New York, especially Harlem, changes drastically in response to altering political and economic systems. “In 1994, it was still a vibrant city with vitality, unique character, and architecture that nodded to its history,” notes Rockwell in the production notes. “As the story progresses, and the city cleans up its look, a lot of the grittiness is lost but also the vibrance—the city’s identity is redefined altogether.”
The two stories—the changing economic landscape of New York City and Inez’s struggle to maintain a home—intertwine in poignant and powerful ways. The Chicago Reader writes, “A.V. Rockwell’s lens captures the beauty and vibrancy of the city of New York, Black life, and motherhood in poverty, making space for expressions of parental love that show up in imperfect ways.”
Rockwell’s unique look at New York City recalls how many great filmmakers have cast celebrated cities as essential characters in their stories. From Marseille to London and Belfast to Paris, we invite you to also visit these dramatic destinations on the screen.

Jude Hill in Belfast
Belfast | Belfast
Writer-director Kenneth Branagh won an Original Screenplay Academy Award® for bringing to life his childhood and the city that sparked his imagination in Belfast. At the story’s center is the 9-year-old Buddy (Jude Hill), whose carefree life of going to the movies and hanging out with grandparents (Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds) is brought to a crashing stop. When political violence erupts on their block, his parents (Caitríona Balfe and Jamie Dornan) must decide whether to leave their home and endure the rising conflict in Belfast. “In the late 1960s, it went through an incredibly tumultuous period of its history, very dramatic, sometimes violent, that my family and I were caught up in,” remembers Branagh in the production notes. “It’s taken me 50 years to find the right way to write about it.” Branagh wove all of these different elements together in a deeply moving portrait of a family and city. “Visually stunning, emotionally wrenching, and gloriously human, Belfast takes one short period from Branagh’s life and finds in it a coming-of-age story, a portrait of a city fracturing in an instant, and a profoundly moving lament for what’s been lost during decades of strife in his homeland of Northern Ireland,” writes The Wrap.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Matt Smith in Last Night in Soho
Last Night in Soho | London
Edgar Wright was inspired to create Last Night in Soho by strolling through the streets of the city he calls home. “I’ve had more night-time walks through Soho than I can possibly count, and you get thinking about what this or that building used to be. You feel the echoes of the past,” Wright recounts in the production notes. Mixing his personal knowledge with the history of Soho in British film, Wright creates a dizzyingly entertaining time-travel story that captures both the area’s alluring legend and its brutal reality. His co-screenwriter, Krysty Wilson-Cairns, explains in the production notes, “Last Night in Soho is a love letter to that specific part of London, and to a bygone age when the Rolling Stones and Princess Margaret were hanging around.” This personal and passionate trip to Soho, The Wrap writes, “will stand as one of the best London movies of the new decade.”

Lesley Manville and Lucas Bravo in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris | Paris
For Anthony Fabian, the director of Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, telling the story of a 1950s London charwoman (Lesley Manville) who earns enough money to travel to Paris to acquire an original Dior gown made him feel right at home. He tells Casting Net that “my father moved to Paris when I was 7, and the city became a second home for me.” While he captures the city of his childhood in his authentic reconstruction of the House of Dior and his postcard-perfect takes of French streets, he also alludes to the mythical place of daydreams and technicolor musicals. While, as the Hollywood Reporter writes, “the movie is a love letter to the French capital and its halls of fashion,” it also “evokes the city’s magnificent cinematic past, notably so in a walk along the Seine dappled in bewitching evening light.”

Academy Award®-winning director Tom McCarthy’s thriller Stillwater is a tale of two cities: one being the title place, an Oklahoma town from which the roughneck Bill Baker (Matt Damon) comes; the other being Marseilles, the French Mediterranean city where Baker spends most of the film, trying to find a way to save his daughter (Abigail Breslin), who is in prison accused of murder. Having fallen in love with the French city, McCarthy wanted to honor its cultural complexity and legendary heritage. In addition to working with French screenwriters, McCarthy experienced the town firsthand. In an exclusive Focus Features interview, production designer Philip Messina recalls, “Tom and I would often walk the streets—both day and night—just to get lost and see what we could find.” McCarthy’s attention to detail brings to the screen “the daily rhythms of Marseille—the back alleys, grubby kebab shops, and sudden dazzling flashes of sun-dappled Gallic scenery,” according to Entertainment Weekly. In addition, the San Francisco Chronicle writes, “Audiences will come away feeling like they’ve really been somewhere, that they were moved by the people they met and expanded by the experience.”
