Ghostly Encounters of the babysitting kind.
Various Casper characters x reader
(I'll probably do a part two to this, but I thought this made a good prologue!)

Dr. James Harvey frantically sorts papers, a few slipping out from the bottom of the pile in his hands. "Ugh, seriously-." He groans, crouching to pick up the fallen documents. As the Dr. experiences a manic episode, his daughter sits on the Bannister of the library stairs, a brow raised. She looks at her father with a mix of concern and bemusement as she crunches on some salty potato chips. Her eyes dart back and forth, following her dad as he darts back and forth across the library, mumbling about something.
"Hey... Dad?" Kat asks cautiously, and her father jumps in shock at her sudden voice. Placing a hand to his chest and taking a deep breath, he shakes off this fear. "Kathleen, well, you're certainly getting sneakier. When you were a toddler, I couldn't NOT hear you-" He rambles on, as Kat shakes her head. "Dad, you're rambling. What are you so freaked about?" She asks. He looks up at her. "Freaked?" He repeats. She rolls her eyes. "It's slang, you know? For freaked out?" He nods and reaches up to adjust his glasses, then sets his paper pile on the desk. "Well, to answer your question, I'm going to a college campus soon." He explains. She tilts her head in confusion, and he goes on. "Well, the Bowdoin College is interested in my work. They've agreed to give me a seminar to the head psychology students." He smiles, and motions to the papers beside him. "Just, uh, organizing my papers," He suddenly looks confused. "Wait, no, that's not paper one, where is paper one?" He mumbles, turning his back to his daughter. She hops up from her spot and heads down the spiral stairs. "So, they're open to you talking about ghost psychology..." She says, the phrase heavy with skepticism. She watches her father's shoulder slump noticeably, and he turns back around with a sigh. "Well, I may have, fudged my resume a bit, they think I'm going to present on psychology for humans, the elderly, specifically." Kat folds her arms and lowers her brows. "And you're going to present on that, right?" She asks. Dr. Harvey remains silent. "Right?" She repeats. "Well..." He starts, prompting Kat to groan. "Dad! Just cause' we know there're ghosts doesn't mean everyone believes it! These are fancy college people, they're gonna laugh you out of Bowdoin." She says. Dr. James Harvey claps, and points at his upset daughter. "But, maybe, they won't! This could be a break for me, Kathleen!" He insists. "Whatever, at least Bowdoin is far away, I don't wanna skip town again." She jokes.
"How long are you gonna be gone?" She asks, moving to lean against the poles holding up the library balcony. She had always wondered why they had a two-story library. "Uh, well, about 4 days actually." He says. "Cool, how many frozen pizzas did you buy for me?" She asks with a smile. He laughs, and nods a little. "That's the thing, I felt bad leaving you alone for several days, and I frankly..." He looks around, before whispering. "Frankly, I don't feel safe leaving you with you-know-who." Kat nods, shivering as she remembers the time her dad left to grab groceries, only to return to three ghosts dangling his daughter off the roof. He seems to sense what she's remembering. "I don't think they were really gonna drop me, probably..." She tries to give the three ghosts the benefit of the doubt. "Where am I going then?" Dr. Harvey pulls out a flyer. "I talked to some of the moms in town at the PTA meeting last week, there's a babysitter in town. They come highly recommended." He says, handing her the flyer. "I thought all the moms in the PTA bullied you..." She says as she examines the pamphlet. "Y/N L/N. So, there like, a nanny?" Dr. Harvey nods. "I'm leaving tonight, in-" He looks over at the large grandfather clock on the wall. "Oh, no, I'm already running behind, could you grab my suitcase? It's in my room by the wardrobe." Kat nods and heads out of the library. "Throw away your chip bag!" Dr. Harvey yells after her.
Upstairs, Kat Harvey grabs the rather heavy suitcase from her dad's bedside. "Ugh." She grunts, crouching as she tries to drag the suitcase. She feels a cold chill suddenly enter the room, and she smiles. "Hey, Casper." She says nonchalantly. A white apparition appears with a sheepish smile. "Aw, how'd you know it was me." He complains. She shrugs, and drops the suitcase with a heavy sigh. "Could you do me a favor, this suitcase weighs like one hundred pounds." She exaggerates. Casper nods, stretching his pale ghostly body in a superhero pose. He lifts up Dr. Harvey's suitcase and follows Kat's journey downstairs.
As Dr. Harvey loads his luggage into the beat up old Cadillac, he wipes some sweat from his brow and sighs. He claps his hands together when he turns back to face his Daughter, then lets out a shriek when a loud bang on the hood of a car rings out. He whips around to see three ghostly figures by the car with the hood open. "I don't know doc' I'm not sure this car is ready for travel." Stretch says, prompting Dr. Harvey to groan in concern. "I'm gonna regret this, but care to elaborate?" Dr. Harvey asks. "Well, from the looks of it, ya' don't even have an engine." Dr Harvey rushes forward to see that his Cadillac is indeed missing an engine. An engine, which he smacks his head on as he leans back up. The three ghosts howl in amusement as the Doctor tries to wrestle the possessed floating engine back into the hood of the car. "Come on, just knock it off, please!" He grunts, and suddenly the engine drops back into the car. He sighs and stands back up, his tweed jacket now coated in oil. Casper makes a gagging motion at the sight of it, causing Kat to giggle. "Huh, seems the car trouble has resolved itself." Fatso says, wiping the some of the engine oil onto the windshield of the car. "Your welcome for that." Dr. Harvey shakes his head, and opens the driver's side door.
"Kat, honey, I'm running behind, but I promise I'll bring you something back from Bowdoin. Casper," Casper's head perks up at the mention of his name. "Do what you can to keep them under control." He mumbles, eyes motioning to the ghostly trio. Stretch gasps, mocking hurt. "Doc' your words wound us!" Stinkie falls over dramatically into the arms of Fatso, clutching at his non-existent heart. "Yeah, you can trust us, we'll make sure your little fleshie stays alive," Stretch thinks for a moment "We'll try, at least." The ghosts burst into laughter again. "Well, that's not a risk I'm taking." The three ghosts look up. Dr. Harvey yelps as he feels a ghostly arm stick through the roof of his car and grab his collar, yanking him out of the door. "Whatta' ya' mean by that?" Stretch prods accusingly. Dr. Harvey gulps, trying to figure out how to explain his plan in a way that won't doom Casper and Kat to the rage of the three ghosts. "I've hired a babysitter-" "A BABYSITTER!" The three ghosts wail, and Casper only looks away. Stretch bares a set of ghostly fangs as his eyes bulge, something he usually does only when provoked. "We already were gracious enough to not chase ya' out of here, and you're lettin' in some other random fleshie?!" He yells, ectoplasmic ghost spit flying onto the face of the dear doctor with each word spoken. The trio glares at Dr. Harvey, and he waits a few moments before speaking. "I'm not going to leave Kat alone, she needs another living-" He's cut off again. "So that's the issue, huh? We aren't good enough because we're ghosts?" Stretch asks. "No, that's not what I-" "Can you believe this guy?" Stretch asks, and the other two shake their heads solemnly. "After all we did for you, you don't trust us..." Stinkie pouts, his eyes morphed into mocking puppy-dog eyes. "Look, I'm sorry that I need someone else in the house, but I just do. So, please, please try not to do anything crazy?" Dr. Harvey begs. The three of them instantly stop there fake sulking, and look at the doctor. "Alright doc', we'll bite. But what's in it for us?" Stretch asks, folding his arms. Dr Harvey sighs and flails his arm out. "I, look I'm really running late, we'll come up with the terms when I get back." Casper's eyes widen. "Uh, Dr Harvey? That doesn't seem like a good-" Dr. Harvey waves him off. "I know, I know, but I've got to get going, I'm sorry." Dr. Harvey waves out the window as he backs the car out of the driveway, narrowly making it through the Whipstaff manor gates. Kat waves back un-enthusiastically, and groans when she feels three pairs of eyes on the back of her head. "What?" She spits, crossing her arms.
"While we wait for this babysitter to arrive, why don't you explain how you're going to keep this fleshie babysitting rando out of our way." Stretch sneers. "Maybe you should just stay out of our way instead." Kat challenges, stepping forward. Stretch pauses, the grins and backs off, putting his arms up in surrender.
"Fine, but don't blame us if this sitter should happen to get into a... tragic workplace accident."
