I actually like your idea of Mrs. Burns leaving the family instead of her being dead. Although the topic of parental abandonment is a heavy subject to talk about for younger audiences, it's still an important thing kids should learn about.

Thank you! Mostly is for angst, the topic of maternal abandonment is something I don't see much in children's cartoons unless is a bad divorce or the mother is depicted as 100% evil and a total jerk to her children and husband...

In my canon, Msr. Burns never wanted a big family, she just wanted a happy life with Charlie (mostly because of her past family abuse trauma that I haven't revealed yet), but Charlie, still accepting his wife's decision, did not feel fully happy. But, after Charlie's work became a 24/7 daily life... Msr. Burns was the one to start becoming unhappy... and thus... mistakes were made.

And for that, let me present you with a meme that explains the rest!

Not a hc relationship for a Burns kid with a reader (my brain can't accept that ¨reader¨ is supposed to be me 😕)

But what do you think of hc for Charlie x Carin??? Why not have some old people love fluff?? How would the rest of the Burns kids react knowing that their dad is ¨back in action 🤭😉?

Charlie x Carin Headcanons

🚨Given the fact that they’re in their middle age, most dates are probably quiet ones, when rescue work doesn’t get in the way. Their relationship gives me big “quality time as a love language” vibes.

🚨They still like to hike together! They get to appreciate nature and the quiet time away from responsibilities for a short while and just enjoy each other’s presence. Sometimes their hikes turn into picnics.

🚨They also do lunch when they can, cafe dates where Charlie pulls out her chair for her and they playfully fight over who will cover the check. Chivalry ain’t dead~

🚨They talk policing, getting to know about what each other has done and heard about working on the police force. Carin likes to get Charlie all flushed and bashful when she goes on and on about how famous he is in the mainland rescue community.

🚨They do talk about family as well. They both have plenty of stories of Jerry to laugh about, and of course there is always a lot to say about the Burns’ kids.

🚨But Charlie? Well Charlie mainly just wants to hear about her.

🚨He loves his kids and is proud of them but he hears plenty of people praising the rescue team all the time. He wants to know about her. Why she became police dispatch, why she moved to the island, if she had a spouse…

🚨And if she did, they speak of their passed loved ones fondly together, which only strengthens their bond and makes Charlie feel less guilty about pursuing love again.

🚨Sometimes they do drives around town (or Carin joins Charlie for parol) courtesy of Chase, who is painfully oblivious to these two flirting and how much of a third wheel he is.

How The Kids Would React

The Burns’ kids would definitely notice when their dad starts hanging out with a woman his age. At first they would stay out of it for sake of pretending it’s not happening and not wanting to make assumptions, but when casual meetups turn into obvious dates, they have a talk about it. And when I say ‘they’ have a talk about it, I mean just the kids.

They know their dad still loves their mom and that their dad has gone through so much that he deserves to be happy. If that’s with Carin, they’re… okay with it. Kade is surprisingly the most accepting of it.

It can’t not be awkward when your parent starts dating again. The Burns’ kids and Carin have a lot of strained awkward conversations before they get used to her being around.

They do like Carin but this doesn’t stop them from making faces and fake gagging behind her back if they catch the two getting affectionate, no matter how innocent it is.

“Oh gross, they’re kissing!”

It’s likely the most awkward for poor Cody, who is probably a teenager at the time this is happening. Not to mention the fact that he and Carin’s nephew (Jerry’s son) are likely being made to hang out more because of it. Not that Cody doesn’t like him but I’m sure he gets plenty of “Ew Aunt Carin and your dad are dating! That’s so gross!” Or they just avoid talking about it at all which makes for a lot of awkward silence.

🚨Charlie never hides his newfound relationship from his kids, but he is hesitant to talk about it.

1, because he’s not sure how they’ll react to him moving on from their mom

2, he knows it’s ‘cringy’ when a parent gets mushy with someone

And 3, he knows that they’ll tease him about it

Kade: Hey, uh, Dad! Is that a new shirt? Don’t think I’ve seen it before! Going somewhere… special?

Charlie [parent warning voice]: Kade…

Dani: Oh hush, Kade. Let him have some fun, he deserves it!

Graham: Oh, uh, but not too much fun!

Cody: Guys, ew!

Jon Hamm: I've worn everything on this show, from nothing to a rug wrapped around me to a beautiful bespoke suit.

Kate Carin (Costume Designer): When we see him at the bookshop for the ball, we thought it would be hilarious that Aziraphale had asked him to get really dressed up for it. So we did a bit of a homage to Liberace. So he's got a powder blue dinner suit that's encrusted with rhinestones. And then Douglas asked if we could do some sort of coat to go on top of it for one of the scenes when he leaves. So, of course, we didn't do just a coat. We did a huge ostrich feather coat, which we made from scratch.The girls did all the ombre on the feathers so it matches the dinner suit, gets lighter and lighter blue as it comes to the top, and then he's kind of surrounded by this halo of white feathers.

Sarah-Kate Fenelon (Producer): There is a shot when he emerges from the bookshop to meet all of the demons and say, like, I am who you're looking for, where he looks a little bit like an angel. And the silhouette of him kind of emerging in the light is very epic and is then just completely undercut by sort of, move out of the way. (video)

Working on a concept for some TTRPG homebrew (probably for the game Carin) where players are able to gain abilities/resources by taking materials off of the monsters they slay.

Think like you kill a dragon and use its liver to make a Potion of Firebreath or maybe a manticore spine can be carved into a drinking horn that purifies poisons.

More details under the cut, and please feel free to give me constructive criticism if this is something you're interested in :)

(Also if you know of any systems or supplements that already have a mechanic like this please lmk)

The two elements I want to incorporate are experimentation and player creativity, but I'm actually kind of struggling to find a middle-ground between the two. The two scenarios I'm thinking of would look something like this:

The players have just slain a hydra. One player invents the idea that maybe its regenerative powers come from the bile inside its gallbladder. The GM thinks this is a reasonable idea and has the player make some sort of a medicine roll. If they succeed, their character was right and they are able to harvest some of the bile. If they fail, their character was wrong and/or something goes wrong in the harvesting (whichever is more narratively interesting). The players later decide to use this bile to make a topical healing potion, which the GM agrees makes sense.

The players have just slain a hydra. They decide to cut into it and look inside. The GM describes the gallbladder in particular as pulsing and glowing green. Thinking this sounds interesting, one of the players grabs it and takes it with them. Then they are able to make some sort of medicine roll / visit a library to learn about the hydra / give the gallbladder to the town doctor to look at it for a small fee. They could even try to experiment with it themselves. Whichever method they choose, they learn that the gallbladder has healing properties, and maybe the doctor/library book even suggests that they could turn it into a health potion.

TLDR; One method the players decide what a harvested part might do, and if it sounds reasonable, the GM lets them roll to see if they're right. The other method has the GM deciding what the part does, and then the players have to study or experiment with it to learn that information.

What I really want is some sort of mix between those two methods, but I can't quite figure out how to do that. Any advice is greatly appreciated, and I'll update this post if I come up with any other ideas :)

For the record, if you see rock towers like these while hiking:

They are called Carin’s and they are not art projects or whatever else. They are used to mark where a trail is so people don’t get lost or disturb more habit. Do not destroy it, and do not build your own. Like anything with nature, leave it be.
