The Hot Wife and I went to the Calvert Marine Museum for First Fossil Friday to have a paleontologist take a look at a whale vertebra my Mom found at Calvert Cliffs in the 50s and 3 things I at the Cliffs and at Flag Pond found to identify them.
The fossils are from the Miocene. They are: a vertebra from an adult baleen whale, a scapula from a sea turtle, a tooth from either an Otodus chubutensis or Otodus megladon but he couldn’t tell because of how the tooth is broken - which is similar to other teeth he’s seen that were modified by Native Americans for use as a spear point!!!! The final fossil is the inside of a geoduck and part of its shell.
We also stopped by to see the river otters (the Hot Wife’s fav part of the museum) who put on quite a show for her, swimming up to look at her and swimming away.
Then we hit the gift shop and I found the best fake teeth ever!
came across a velvet ant near my apartment!!! only the third time i’ve ever seen one, and the first time i’ve seen a red one!! also the largest one i’ve seen, this was a pretty hefty lady compared to the little orange ones
Nuclear Accidents to read about for more Burrow’s End Context (Besides Chernobyl):
I’ve recently become hyperfixated with reading about these and a lot of them have bits that I think can add to what’s going on in Burrow’s End. (These are far from all the possible examples I could give you, these just seemed the most relevant). I’ve grouped them by location in honor of the Cold War themes we’ve been seeing.
Soviet Incidents:
Mayak Kyshtym Disaster (1957) | Considered the third worst nuclear plant disaster in history (behind Chernobyl and Fukushima). Case of neglect and lack of oversight and general human stupidity. Caused huge amount of contamination to surrounding area; they had previously already been dumping their waste into a nearby lake. High civilian casualties; at least 200 people died and many, many more were affected.
“In the 45 years afterwards, about half a million people in the region have been irradiated in one or more of the incidents, exposing them to up to 20 times the radiation suffered by the Chernobyl disaster victims outside of the plant itself.”
Vinča Nuclear Institute Criticality Excursion (1958) | Researchers smelled ozone while they were unknowingly being irradiated, resulting in one death
Greifswald Nuclear Power Plant Incidents | 1975: Electrical fire destroyed control lines to coolant pumps 1989: Another cooling pump malfunction caused near-meltdown
KS-150 Incidents (1976, 1977) | Several different incidents involving coolant malfunction
K-431 Chazhma Bay Accident (1985) | Criticality excursion on a nuclear submarine caused by operator error. Resulted in a large area of severe contamination. (10 fatalities, another 49 injured, unknown how many could have been affected by contamination).
US Incidents:
Louis Slotin Accident (1946) | There are several excursions and deaths associated with the Manhattan Project and Los Alamos— but this one involved witnesses reporting a “blue glow” as the resulting radiation ionized the surrounding air. Slotin died within days, and several of his colleagues were injured, one permanently disabled, with some later dying early deaths.
Cecil Kelley Accident (1958) | Procedural error caused criticality accident that resulted in a “bright flash of blue light;” (warning that the descriptions on this one get particularly grisly as Kelley received more than seven times the adult lethal dose of radiation; he was the only one affected).
Surry Power Station Incidents (1972, 1979, 1986, 2011) | Multiple cooling system accidents, primarily those involving escaping steam, resulting in burns and one explosion. (Only the events in 1972 and 1986 resulted in loss of life, for 6 deaths total)
Three Mile Island Accident (1979) | Water escaped from the coolant system due to a mix of operator error and design flaws. This led to the reactor overheating and an eventual leak of radioactive gases via the steam released during the incident. Luckily the contamination of surrounding areas appears to have been minimal (for the most part).
Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station Malfunctions (1986) | Used Cape Cod Bay as the water source for its cooling system, resulting in an impact on aquatic plant and animal life. In 1986, recurring equipment malfunctions resulted in an emergency shutdown. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission once referred to it as “one of the worst-run″ nuclear power plants in the US.
Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Incidents (1987) | Nuclear Regulatory Commission found evidence of misconduct, procedure error, corporate malfeasance, deliberate disregard for safety regulations, and pollution via accidental waste leakage into a nearby river. Resulted in a forced shutdown in 1987, associated with cooling malfunctions.
(There are several other [mostly nonfatal] US incidents at nuclear power plants, too many to fully get into here. See: Idaho National Laboratory, Enrico Fermi Nuclear Generating Station, Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Crystal River Nuclear Plant, and Davis–Besse Nuclear Power Station)
Other Locations:
Lucens Reactor Accident (1969) | Loss of coolant accident led to partial meltdown and contamination of the reactor cavern
Vandellòs Nuclear Power Plant Accident (1989) | A fire damaged the cooling system, leading to near-meltdown

supernatural s13e23 let the good times roll (w. andrew dabb)
well, carry on my wayward son has lost pretty all of its emotional punch that it once had for me back in the early seasons.
the moment we see sam in front of the corkboard and "the ice caps are melting" i felt like i was going to combust. what is this nonsense. our-earth 101 catching them up to speed even though we're just here to regroup and arm up before a showdown with michael? and how long was the apocalypse apocalypsing over there? longer than it would have without the boys to stop it in 2010 or whatever? mortifying. i fast forwarded. i don't need the spn cliffs notes on awful things here too
you want to hear some nonsense? i was sort of looking forward to yesterday's episode. i don't know why. well, it disabused me of that notion right quick.
why are we on some rando werewolf hunt
man mary is beautiful. and sure, she and bobby get umbrellas
MARY
So what are you gonna do now?
BOBBY
Honestly, I got no clue. Everyone seems to be settling in okay in town. Ketch is out doing Ketch things. Rowena and Charlie are road tripping it through the Southwest.
i get that it's for production reasons they're not gonna have the whole cast around but hokay.
BOBBY
Anyways...without an archangel, it's not like we can go back home. And I'm not sure I'd want to.
all right then. obviously, shit's gonna happen with lucifer and michael though right. don't have a lot of episodes left (lol) and i know michael gets all up in there at some point
DEAN
Hey, you remember...remember when you asked if we could stop it? All the evil in the world?
SAM
Yeah.
DEAN
If we could...really change things? Well, maybe with Jack, we can.
SAM
Maybe you're right. But then what will we do?
DEAN
Mm. Yeah. This. (Dean holds a beer he has been carrying and Sam looks down at his) A whole lot of this. But on a beach somewhere, you know? Can you imagine? You, me, Cass, toes in the sand, couple of them little umbrella drinks. Matching Hawaiian shirts, obviously. Some hula girls.
SAM (scoffing)
You talking about retiring? You?
DEAN
If I knew the world was safe? Hell, yeah. And you know why? 'Cause we freaking earned it, man.
SAM (holding up his beer)
I'll drink to that.
DEAN
Yeah. Hell, yeah.
being optimistic is surely a sign for everything to turn to absolute shit. is cas gonna wear the trench over the hawaiian shirt? he's awfully commited to that look
tired of myself talking about this show.
DEAN
Jack? Hey.
Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy. You're just having a bad dream.
JACK
Sorry.
DEAN
It's okay. You don't have to apologize. I have 'em, too. All the time.
JACK
You do?
DEAN
Sure.
JACK
You, um... What do you see?
DEAN
Well, depends. Mostly... mostly people I couldn't save.
thanks for saying that i guess, pretty sure he's only gonna talk to someone that's zoned as a kid about it. but without specifics of course
DEAN
Jack... it's not about being strong. I mean...Look, I don't know what you saw over there, and I don't know what you went through.
I know it was bad. But I also know that you came out the other side because you are strong. But even when we're strong, man, things are gonna happen. We're gonna make mistakes. Nobody's perfect. Right? But we can get better. Every day, we can get better. So whatever you're dealing with, you know, whatever...whatever comes at us, we'll figure out a way to deal with it, together. You're family, kid, and we look after our own.
needed some Quality Dad Bonding time between jack and dean, i guess now that he's not convinced he's gonna go evil and blow up the world. also always slightly amused that jack's actor, alexander calvert, is 27 at this point
didn't take long for lucifer to show up
jack flitting off to basically kill this guy with no proof of wrongdoing, like. it's such a weird character because he's an adult, i think in world he's supposed be i dunno, late teens? and he's got a very childlike view of events. it's like infantilizing except that he is basically a baby with extremely limited life experince so?? i dunno. doesn't really work for me on the regular
in a way i wish pellegrino had a different role so i could like the character he's playing. i want to believe this thing with jack because he's just so good at being sincere and horrible. like, some fucking random play at getting jack on his side is making me cry??? because the idea of starting over and him actually leaving everyone alone is just so... i wish.
MARY
Sam, even if we find Lucifer, how we gonna stop him?
did they lose their archangel blade over in au world?
MAGGIE
Does it matter? Kinda seems like you have bigger, you know, Satan-y problems.
SAM
Yeah, but -- but we're -- we're dealing with those. Mostly.
the little muttered "mostly" did get a chuckle out of me
CASTIEL
Yeah, angel radio is nothing but static, which is disturbing.
i mean there's only what, 9 angels left anyway lol
laughing at this ridiculous slow float downstairs while they shoot at him, knowing nothing is going to do anything
well. that big reveal of lucifer is actually evil to jack thing, well played by pellegrino as i'd expect. did not expect him flashing out of there with jack and sammy in tow.
DEAN
No. What if...what if you had your sword?
well. i wondered what on earth could get dean to say yes.
LUCIFER
Wow, Daddy Sammy coming to the rescue. But your little Jackie, the nougat-loving boy that you had before, he's killed people.
He's got lots of blood on his hands.
SAM (standing)
I don't care. He's family.
i mean, so has sam and the rest of their family so?? not exactly a convincing argument :p
DEAN (to Castiel)
Lucifer has Sam. He has Jack. Cass, I don't have a choice!
DEAN (To Michael)
If we do this, it's a one-time deal.
I'm in charge. You're the engine, but I'm behind the wheel.
Understand?
i'm sure that'll work out fine
mmmk.
convenient that michael and lucifer brought the archangel blades with them so we can have a little showdown
lol reminds me of the matrix training with morpheus fight but cheesier. and we're just gonna have a fist fight in the air. oy
are they actually committing to killing lucifer? his character was more than done but sad to see pellegrino leave, but glad that plotline is over finally
SAM
You did it.
DEAN
No. No, we did it. We did it.
and dean immediately hunches over in pain and it's like s8e23 all over again
and now michael has his special sword vessel and he broke the deal and they can't go killing him while he's wearing dean, right. wonder how long that's gonna drag on in the next season. i haven't seen a lot of gifs of michael!dean so lol i figure it can't be that long??
In Calvert Co., MD: rgent: Help Needed for Calvin - A 7-Month-Old Pup in Need of Rescue Placement! ☘️🐾☘️ - Calvert County Animal Shelter - Maryland.
🍀🐾Lucky Calvin Needs a Shamrock Miracle! ☘️🐾
Top o' the morning to you, dear animal lovers and compassionate souls! We're reaching out from the heart of our shelter with a plea as green as the rolling hills of Ireland, seeking a wee bit of magic and a whole lot of love for our special lad, Calvin!
Calvin, the 7-month-old, 43lb pupper, stumbled into our lives like a hidden pot o' gold at the end of a rainbow, arriving as a stray with a story as mysterious as a leprechaun's pot of treasure. With eyes as bright as emeralds and a heart as pure as the Irish countryside, Calvin is your typical puppy - full of boundless energy, affection, and a mischievous spirit that could charm even the grumpiest leprechaun!
This adorable lad has stolen our hearts with his playful antics and his penchant for cuddles with people of all. But alas, Calvin's journey to finding his forever home is fraught with obstacles that require a bit of luck of the Irish to overcome.
Like any young pup, Calvin could use a bit of guidance and training to help him navigate the world with confidence and grace. A bit of basic obedience training would do wonders to polish his skills and sharpen his leash manners, ensuring he's the perfect companion for any adventure, be it chasing rainbows or lounging by the hearth.
But there's a twist in Calvin's tale, a challenge that requires the wisdom of a Celtic sage to unravel. Our dear lad has shown a puzzling reaction during a meet and greet with another four-legged friend. With a bark as loud as a banshee's wail and a demeanor less than friendly, Calvin's encounter was anything but a jig of joy. It seems our lad needs a bit of guidance in the realm of interspecies diplomacy, for he's yet to learn the art of making friends with his fellow furry creatures.
Thus, we seek the aid of noble rescuers, those with hearts as vast as the Cliffs of Moher and as tender as a bed of clover. We humbly request rescue placement only for our Calvin, so he may receive the tender loving care he needs to bloom into the magnificent hound we know he's destined to be. With a bit of patience, a sprinkle of kindness, and a dash of luck, we're certain Calvin will transform into the loyal, loving companion he was meant to be.
So, dear friends, if you find a bit of space in your heart and a corner in your home for our dear Calvin, we beseech you to reach out and lend a helping hand.
Calvin is neutered, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative and microchipped.
Together, let's give Calvin the chance to find his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow - a forever home filled with love, laughter, and the luck of the Irish!🌈🐾

Assawoman Bay, Chesapeake Bay at Calvert Cliffs, and the Atlantic Ocean at Fenwick, Delware and Ocean City, Maryland.
It took me forever to figure out how to paint water, but once I got the hang of it (brown - so much more brown than you’d think) it was fun. Calvert Cliffs erode constantly, and the area around them is very silty and full of fossils.
1. “Nadia, look!” Julie Dawson pointed at the fluffy pink-and-yellow wings on a maple tree deep in the Calvert Cliffs state park in southern Maryland. (from Wordless)
2. “F-f-f-fuck, it’s cold!” Bouncing on the balls of her feet, 26-year-old omega Holly Pendergrass jabbed in the code to get into her parents’ house. (from Holly and Ivy)
3. Yelena Montalban glared at the dark clouds overhead before slipping into her Subaru hatchback. (from The Winner Takes It All)
4. Cassia shivers on her cot, her breath a rattle in her throat. (from Kiss of the Lethe)
5. Rosalie Mackenzie had had enough of people throwing alphas at her. (from A Rose at Midnight)
6. Her Highness Elara Ravensfell, Princess of the Moon Court, lurked in the corner of the Sun Court’s massive ballroom, trying and failing to disappear into the few shadows. (from Knights and Daze)
7. Decked out in a black apron and visor, Vi carefully poured a blonde roast into a to-go cup. (from bring me java, bring me joy)
8. Caitlyn Kiramman yearned to know the color pink. (from say my name and every color illuminates)
9. Sigrid shuffles her tarot cards like the rush of a river, cool and calming. (from 78)
10. In her rural Virginia office, Lorena García Fernández bypassed the usual salacious story about the Ìovorian princess and snipped out the article about her business trip. (from Love, Lorena)
my fossil collection is Not Big and yet it still manages to frustrate me ('it' means the piece I found at Calvert Cliffs that I don't have the expertise to ID properly but it looks???? like a piece of shark vertebra??? but I don't KNOW)
Today was a really nice day. But why do I still do crumby still. Sucks. It was a beautiful day and I had a lot of fun for the most part.
I slept alright last night. But I had really bizarre and intense dreams. When I woke up at 730 I felt alright. A little weird but fine. I was looking forward to my outfit. Which is silly but I haven't worn this shirt in a while and I always like it. And this was the first time I've worn these shorts this year. It just felt nice.
I let my phone charge a bit while I got ready. I made sure James remembered sun screen and I packed big spray for us. James was in charge of our extra battery pack. And I had snacks for us.
I was a little frustrated that James had a bagel for breakfast and there wasn't anything I wanted. I would end up with a slice of angel food cake but it has a weird after taste I didn't enjoy. But it was fine. I was excited to get on the road.
It was a little less then two hours to Calvert cliffs. And it was a really nice drive. We listened to podcasts. I tried not to just stare at my phone. It was a beautiful day.
And when we got out there it was so nice. The long sleeve was a good call, as it was not even 10 when we got there and it was still cool. And once we got near the bay it would be cool there as well.
We would use the bathrooms first, got on bug spray, and started on the red trail. It was a very easy hike. It was just under two miles but it was very flat and mostly under shade. It started on a man made pond but we followed along a stream that would eventually become marsh which would eventually become the Chesapeake Bay! We saw little animal, like skinks and frogs and lizards. We saw a bever dam and even had to walk on the edge of the bride because it had flooded. Some park staff were working on taking down part of the dam to get the flooding to stop. Which was very funny to me.
I really just enjoyed the walk. I was the least uncomfortable I have been since last week. I had fun talking to James and was just in a very good place.
When we got to the bay beach it was super pretty. You can go under or on the cliffs anymore because it's to dangerous because of erosion. But the part of the beach that was accessible was really nice! There were a few other people, some kids. But it was quiet. Except for the weed wackers the staff was using on some plants but that didn't bother me. I took my shoes off right away and was having fun having my feet in the sand and water.
We were there to look for fossils but it turns out I have no idea what to look for? Like shark tooth fossils are what the beach is known for, but there were also other kinds to be found. But there were so many shells too it was hard to tell what was what. Also, weirdly, rocks that weren't rocks but instead were clay?? It was fun though! We had brought a small shovel and we would share that. I found a few things that might be fossils, no teeth, but shells and possibly barnacles or scallops. Regardless it was fun!
James didn't take their shoes off and got there one foot wet trying to jump over a stream. They said it was just a mild annoyance. We would sit on a drift wood log and talk about having kids. And things were afraid of. Things we hope for. It was nice watching the little kids digging and trying to find things. And it was just so beautiful out. I felt really happy.
I was starting to have the weird bone pain in my legs again. Something that's been happening all week. But it was fine. I would be okay. I actually felt pretty fine and soon we would start the hike back to the car.
The walk back we saw more skinks and lizards. We ran into a family that had been at the beach with us and they were trying to catch a frog so I showed them the picture I took and they went back to see if they could get it. Apparently the mom promised to kiss whatever they could catch. Which was hilarious to me.
The walk back felt a little longer. But it wasn't bad. I felt like I was seeing more blue lizards. I never was fast enough to get a picture to identify it but it was fun to spot them. And soon enough we were back to the parking lot.
James went to use the bathroom and I went to read a park sign about not picking up grandes you find. "If you didn't drop it, don't pick it up!" Bizarre.
The car was to hot from sitting in the sun so we opened the doors and ran the AC for a minute. I was hungry. And we needed gas. So we headed back out of the park and back to the real world.
We had to go like a half hour before we found somewhere but it ended up being perfect. A cute little deli. We got sandwiches. I could only eat half, so I have a half sandwich and coleslaw for later. And then we notifed that there was a shell gas station and a Marshalls and a Harris teeter all across the street. All the places we had planned on going. Amazing.
First we got gas. James cleaned the windows. And then over to Marshalls to look for bubble bath but no luck. We would find some bath milk powder at Harris teeter. And the kewpie mayo we were looking for. As well as the shampoo James uses. Excellent.
My body decided that I had had enough. And started to feel bad again.jamwa would get my squish mallow donkey from the backseat so I could use it as a pillow. And I just sort of rested and looked out the window for the hour plus drive home.
Mr Will called on our drive home to let us know he has painted the door. Thank you Will. It looks great honestly. And the drive back wasn't bad but I really really wanted to be horizontal.
I was very happy to be home. When we got back here I considered a shower but I just couldn't. I got out of my hiking clothes and laid down.
I slept a while. I had strange dreams again. But it was whatever. I woke up at 530 and had a note from James that they were biking but it was from earlier and they were in the kitchen making texmex. I went and hugged on them for a little before going to take that shower.
I washed my hair and the shower hurt my skin but it was fine. I was glad to be clean.
After that I just wanted to lay down again. I felt exhausted. I would go and just be a potato for a while.
Eventually I did get up and move to the living room. James heated me up leftovers. And we hung out and talked. And that was really the end of the day. I've been hanging out here watching omelet the frog and hearing all the fireworks. I wish I felt better. But at least a good portion of the day I felt good. Let's hope every day I can feel a little better.
Tomorrow we are planning on going to buy light jackets and then go and use our kayak. I hope it's fun. I hope you all have a good day. Take care of yourself! Goodnight!
had an incredible day yesterday at calvert cliffs — I’d never been there before and I was a bit nervous about disappointing myself but tbh the walk down to the beach was so gorgeous I was already happy with my day by the time we got there. and then my mom and i found two fossil shark teeth, part of a vertebra and a bunch of ray/skate teeth! and now I will have to go amend my minimal knowledge of local miocene sharks so I can try to ID them.
April 17 - Another calm travel day! No complaints, but I wish we would get a chance to hoist the sail!
Lots of pollen on the water this morning
Goodbye Solomons!
This morning, starting before first light, we could hear the watermen passing by the marina. David heard about a dozen boats driving by Molly D, heading for open water. After we left Solomons harbor we passed by many of these same boats. Most of them had been busy taking their crab pots out of the water.
The watermen’s boats have a flat roof for storing their crab pots once they have been hauled from the water.
Calvert Cliffs
Cove Point Lighthouse. The white domes behind the lighthouse are LNG storage tanks.
The travel up the Chesapeake today was quiet. There were 3 other boats on the water and they all were far enough in front of or behind Molly D that we could just about see them.
Upon approaching St Michaels, we could see an American Cruise Line ship anchored outside the harbor. That cruise line visits many of the same harbors as Molly D.
American Constitution anchored outside St Michaels harbor.
The anchorage in the harbor is small. There were two boats anchored in “our” spot and there wasn’t room for Molly D. David made several passes around the harbor looking for another spot to anchor. Not finding any, Molly D anchored outside the harbor. If either of the two anchored boats leave tomorrow morning, Molly D will reanchor inside the harbor. If a spot doesn’t open up, it will be a long 15-20 minute dinghy ride into town. We can’t wait to explore the town tomorrow!
