I blame tumblr batfamily stans for the batgirls comic and how little the writers understand Cassandra (also Stephanie and Barbara but this isn't about them). That being said, the writers should've done their research and read her solo series (minimum) and at least tried to write her in a respectful manner. She hasn't been written well since pre-52 comics (excluding the rebirth detective comics run she was a part of) but since this is a series where she is a main character, I obviously expected better than I would've from batman and robin: eternal or something like that where she isn't a main character. Cassandra is a character that means a lot to me as a neurodivergent asian woman who is also an abuse surviver and I'm sick of people (both dc writers and batfamily stans on the internet) misunderstanding and mischaracterizing her constantly because to a lot of these people, being lazy and careless with a character like her is perfectly acceptable. All anyone does is infantilise her, always pair her up with one or two white women and in the latest issue, she seems to be okay with killing. Cassandra's no-kill rule is one of the most important things about her and the fact that she believes in it not because someone like Bruce taught her to but because she was literally trained to kill since her birth and had to kill someone and then immediately decided that was something she is absolutely against is very admirable and something everyone should remember when writing her. Why dc writers got such an important aspect of her character is lost on me.
I strongly believe she needs to operate away from the Batgirls for a while. I like Stephanie and Cassandra's friendship as much as anyone but this team-up is holding her back. She needs to be the only batgirl (Stephanie can be spoiler and Barbara should be oracle) and needs a solo series ASAP so that all the damage made since new-52 can be repaired.

Saw a post where someone wasn't sure if Tim being good at computers was a fanon thing or not and friend I am happy to inform you that he's been a computer/tech guy from some of his earliest appearances in the comics.
Tumblr media
Detective Comics (Vol. 1) #620 (Rite of Passage part 4) - immersed in the ~web~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robin II: The Joker's Wild #3 - tabletop roleplaying games and spending hours in the basement on the computer - not beating the geek allegations on these fronts, Timmy
Tumblr media
Detective Comics (Vol. 1) #676 - Dick was more into traditional detective work and tended to outsource the computer stuff in these days
Tumblr media
Batman (Vol. 1) #514 (Prodigal part 10) - hackin' through all the garbage and garble
Tumblr media
Robin (1993) #33 - Robin sneaking in and connecting Oracle with the baddies' mainframe so she can do her thing and steal all their data >:)
Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) #6 - "no you're really talented and well suited to be Robin." "no, you." "no, YOU!"
Tim is definitely not as good as Babs/Oracle, but he's certainly her back-up for computer work in the 90's batfam. They're tech buddies and Robin!Tim is her little assistant sometimes, it's super cute:
Tumblr media
Birds of Prey (1999) #19 - happy to play with big sister's fancy high-powered toys
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Legends of the Dark Knight (1989) #125 - real cute kid
And Dick will hand off computer jobs to his little brother when he doesn't want to bother Babs 😂 (that outsourcing I mentioned):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) #68 - examine them pixel by pixel, eh? welp, sounds like a job only you can do, Timbo, you got this buddy, byyyyeeeee
And then when he'd grown up and been doing this for years, he leveled up accordingly, and did stuff like use his access to the League of Assassins computers to overload the generators in every base he could find, etc. etc.
Tumblr media
Red Robin (2009) #8 - yeah that was pretty dumb of you Ra's :)
So yeah, it was a bit of a specialty of Tim's, in large part because he was introduced just at the turn into the 90's, when personal computers were really starting to take off and become widespread. (Robins gotta be cutting edge and all)
Of course, by no means does it follow that the other Bats suck at computers (there is no 'smart one' they are all incredibly smart and capable). This is especially true as reboots and the sliding timescale of comics have moved the DC characters into modern times, where computers run the world and everyone grows up with one in their pocket. The baseline familiarity and expertise that everyone can be expected to have is just much, much higher these days.
It gets exaggerated in fanon as all character traits do, but computer guy Tim is definitely not something just made up out of whole cloth :)b

Here's a list of recs if you'd like to read somecomics about different batfam characters:
BRUCE WAYNE - Batman: Year One (1987) - Batman: The Long Halloween (1996) & Dark Victory (2000) - Batman: Knightfall Saga (1993) - Batman: No Man's Land Saga (1999)
SELINA KYLE - Catwoman (1989) - Catwoman (1993) - Catwoman: When in Rome - Catwoman (2018) - Catwoman of East End
DICK GRAYSON - Robin & Batman (2022) - Robin: Year One - Nightwing: Year One - Nightwing (1996) (specifically Tomasi's run!) - Batman: Black Mirror
JASON TODD - Batman: The Cult - Batman: A Death in the Family (i dont actually care for this but i feel obligated to include it so here...) - Batman: Under the Red Hood
TIM DRAKE - Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying - Robin (1993) - Young Justice (1998)
CASSANDRA CAIN - Batgirl (2000) - Batgirl (2008) - Batgirl: Redemption - Batgirl: Silent Knight
BARBARA GORDON - Batgirl: Year One - Black Canary/Oracle: Birds of Prey - Birds of Prey (1999) (especially Gail Simones run!!) Barbara also appears frequently in the batgirl runs
DAMIAN WAYNE - Batman and Robin (2011) - Robin: Son of Batman - Robin (2021) - Batman & Robin (2023) (currently ongoing! imo this would be a good place to start reading since its happening right now so you can see it happen along with everyone else!)
DUKE THOMAS - Batman: Zero Year - We Are Robin - Batman & The Signal
HELENA BERTINELLI - Huntress: Year One - The Huntress (1989) - Batman/Huntress: Cry for Blood - Nightwing/Huntress Helena is also a character in birds of prey from issues #57-127 <3
STEPHANIE BROWN - Detective Comics #647-649 - Showcase '95 #5 - Robin (1993) #126-147 (steph has a ton of appearances in Robin 1993 so it would be good to read that for more or to look through her appearances on locg if you just want to read about her! these chapters are her as Robin.) - Batgirl (2009)
I haven't read a super large amount for every single one of them so disclaimer that some of the ones I mention here might not be their best! These are what I could think of but there are plenty more, especially as standalone issues, so if anyone sees this please mention more!! also, there are lots of comics that are questionable but this list was very much on the fly off the top of my head so i was kind of sat here with my head in my hands like 'god i need to give more than one jason todd comic dont i....' and this was all i could come up with that wasnt like.... a random detective comics issue idk

Helena Bertinelli/Huntress Reading List/Completionist Guide
Tumblr media
Helena Bertinelli is the Huntress of Prime Earth. She has existed as a character since 1989, and has appeared in her own series as well as multiple other series throughout the years. Most well known for being a Bird of Prey, she has a long history that tends to be hard to track. Instead of hunting down all of the issues, this guide has every one of her appearances in the attempt to follow her chronologically, but where her movements couldn’t be followed the natural passing of time was used to follow the story.
This is both a reading list and a completionist guide. This means there will be times when the issue only has a cameo of Helena. For a casual reader this list may be a little much. If that is the case click [here] for a shorter list that can get you started on Helena.
Moving onto Content Warnings.
There will be mentions and depictions of Sexual Assault of Adults and Minors, Slavery, PTSD, and Murder. These are some of the big Content Warnings. That being said let’s get started.

THE NEW AND IMPROVED CASSANDRA CAIN READING GUIDE
Cassandra Cain is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Sandra Wu-San (better known as Lady Shiva), and was raised by Cain. She is an expert hand-to-hand combatant, and able to read body language to the point of interpreting complex thoughts, but learning to communicate better through speech and text. She has operated as a vigilante under the names of Batgirl, Kasumi, Black Bat, and Orphan, and is currently sharing the title of Batgirl with Stephanie Brown and Barbara Gordon.

i don't know if you've already made a post about this but what comic(s) do you think have the best characterisation of cassandra cain and dick grayson?
My instinctive response to this ask was to just answer "Prodigal and Batgirl (2000)" and be on my way. Instead, I took a little bit more time to think about what my answer should be and what information might be useful to people looking for comics featuring a well-characterized Dick and Cass. So, with that said:
Dick:
Robin: Year One (2000)
New Teen Titans/Tales of the Teen Titans (1980 & 1984)
Batman: Year Three (1989)
Batman: Prodigal (1997)
Titans Vol. 1 (1999)
Nightwing/Birds of Prey: The Hunt for Oracle (2000)
Gotham Knights (2000) #1-12
Peter Tomasi's run on Nightwing (1996)
Batman: The Black Mirror (2010)
Batman: Gates of Gotham (2011)
Listen. All of these comics have their flaws. Many of them feature dated and occasionally poor treatment of various characters/social issues. I'm still holding a grudge against Devin Grayson for her Nightwing run and will until the end of time, and thus the inclusion of Titans Vol. 1 and her first Gotham Knights arcs might seem a bit odd. But I also think this is a pretty solid list of comics that portray Dick in ways that feel consistent and faithful to his core characterization; they're also some of the comics that feature Dick at his best.
Cass:
Batgirl (2000): specifically the Puckett/Scott run (#1-37) and the Gabrych run (#38 & #58-73)
Bruce Wayne: Murderer?/Fugitive (2003)
Gates of Gotham (2011)
Tynion's run on Detective Comics (2016)
Batman and the Outsiders (2019)
Batgirl Vol. 1 was and continues to be the golden standard of how to portray Cass. She's never reached those heights again. Other comics featuring Cass wish they were Batgirl Vol. 1, but it was a true "lightning in a bottle" run that has yet to be replicated. That being said: Murderer/Fugitive (which takes place during Cass's Batgirl run) is great, and Gates of Gotham features the only solid pre-reboot Cass characterization post-Evil Cass arc.
Post-Flashpoint!Cass is a bit of a different animal, but within the context and limitations placed on her appearances until Dan Didio's departure from DC in 2020, she's best characterized and treated in Detective Comics Rebirth and Batman and the Outsiders.
Honorable mentions: these comics either weren't quite on the same level of "good characterization" to make the list or just didn't highlight the character as much as they could have, but I still really like what the creative team did with them in the space they were given:
Dick: Nightwing (1996) #6 (for being a fun depiction of Dick and Tim's early-days relationship), Teen Titans (2003) #6 (great characterization of Dick. So-so characterization of...several other characters), The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul (I love Dick's characterization here, and it's one of my favorite Bat books, but he's just not in it all that much), and Batman & Robin (2009), which...I'll get into my complicated feelings about Morrison's B&R run some other time, but generally: I like Dick's characterization in this comic a lot in isolation. It becomes much more difficult to square, however, when you take everything else going on during the Reborn era into account.
Cass: Mariko Tamaki's Shadows of the Bat: The Tower (2021) event and "Sounds" short from the DC Asian Superhero Celebration (2021) anthology. They're nice and have some great Cass moments, but they're either too short (Sounds) or too focused on other characters/the overall plot (The Tower) to truly do her justice.

Dick's memories:
I've been working on this part for 6 months. I wrote a lot of it from memory and then went to find the panels and check I was characterising them correctly (and add the attribution).
There are some big moments in Dick and Tim's relationship referenced here, of course. But wherever possible, I tried to choose slightly less well known moments, or an alternate panel from the main one pointed to in that issue.
Some fun facts:
38 footnotes, referencing 34 separate comics (I use two scenes from the same issue for 4 comics: Batman, Nightwing, Robin, and Gotham Knights)
15 different comic runs are referenced (Batman, Detective Comics, Azrael, Birds of Prey, Nightwing, Robin, Red Robin, Batman: Shadow of the Bat, Gotham Knights, New Titans, Showcase '93, Joker: Last Laugh, Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis, and Blackest Night: Batman)
The years covered by the comics are the following: 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011.
The years missed are the following: 1989 and 1991.
1989: I skipped because I really, really wanted to open with Tim's first actual team up with Dick after A Lonely Place of Dying. Plus, Dick didn't really look and see Tim until after ALPoD. That's why no circus, no baby Tim, no origin story.
1991: Dick and Tim do not interact in any comic labelled 1991. They do appear in a single splash panel together.
I struggled with myself over whether to include 2009 or not, because I wanted moments of brotherhood between Tim and Dick, where they clearly cared for each other, and I didn't want to include any of Battle for the Cowl or the Red Robin fight. There were in the end only three stories that really qualified: The end of Heart of Hush; the 2008 Holiday Special (which has a Feb 2009 cover date); and Blackest Night: Batman. The only issue of Heart of Hush with a 2009 coverdate simply doesn't have any conversation BETWEEN Dick and Tim to use (they're too busy explaining to Tommy how much he screwed up); while I do like the Wonderful Life story, the costume handover was a bit too twee to fit anywhere into the flow of memories plus Owen Mercer's there; and in the end, I used the panel AFTER the panel of Blackest Night. This was a slight cop out in terms of the whole 'avoid the Red Robin fight' aim, but it's the one big moment that shows Dick and Tim were still in sync during that time, and in terms of the scene build it slotted quite nicely into the explosions-building-to-dead-Tim run of memories.
14 different writers created the comics (Marv Wolfman, Alan Grant, Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Dennis O'Neil, Devin Grayson, Scott Beatty, Brad Meltzer, Geoff Johns, Adam Beechen, Fabian Nicieza, Peter Tomasi, Christopher Yost, and Scott Snyder)
The most common writer was of course Chuck Dixon, who wrote 10 of the issues; Devin Grayson was in second with 6 issues.
The comic that appears the most often is Nightwing, with 6 issues; Gotham Knights has 5 issues appear.
I had great fun constructing this; I hope while you were reading it many of the scenes also played in your head.

hey if i wanted to get into batman comics where would i start. i am asking this purely on the basis that u reblog a ton of comic stuff so u don’t have to answer if u dont want to haha
@amongusbabiescustodybattle
I'm so sorry I don't know how long this has been in my asks. Disclaimer: I haven't read comics in a while and these are purely my own opinions.
If this list is too overwhelming, start at either Detective Comics #568 (if you want 80s batfam vibes) or Detective Comics #934 (if you want modern batfam vibes).
I'd say a good starting place if you want a place to jump in featuring the entire modern cast of characters is Batman (2016) and Detective Comics (2016). A few Batfam characters have solos from this time too (These are at the start of Rebirth, which is one of the more recent reboots, this is where I started).
For individual characters, here are some recs. Most of these will not be from within the past 10 years.
Batgirl (2000): Cassandra Cain's solo, fleshed out her character a bunch. There's a few problems that are relics of the time but it's generally pretty well regarded
Batman and the Outsiders (Rebirth) is good for both Cass and Duke Thomas
Two good Duke comics are We Are Robin (2015 I think?) and Batman and the Signal (2018)
Batgirl (2009): this is Stephanie Brown's solo that only has (I think) 12 issues because of the New 52 reboot
SIDE NOTE DO NOT READ THE NEW 52 COMICS THEYRE SHIT AT LEAST MOST OF THEM
The 90s runs of Nightwing and Robin, starring Dick Grayson and Tim Drake respectively
Birds of Prey (1999): This is where you'll find a lot of Barbara Gordon as Oracle content
Batman and Robin (2009): Dick Grayson as Batman after Bruce's presumed death. Damian Wayne as Robin.
Red Robin (2009): Tim goes off the rails
Batman: Under the Red Hood (2005). Jason is back and murderous.
I'm also a big fan of Batman (2016) Annual #3 because of the Alfred content
Those are all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure some other comic people can think of a lot more (@junkoandthediamonds you are The Comic Person maybe you could give them some recs? No pressure)
Some individual issues I would recommend are:
Jason's robin run from the 80s: Batman #408-425 and Detective Comics #568-582 (thank you @dailyjasontodd because your post came up on google for this)
Tim's entrance: As a normal dude, Batman #436. As Robin, Batman #457. These issues are from 1989 and 1990 respectively.
Steph's debut: Detective Comics #647 in 1992
Steph's Robin run, Robin #126-128 in 2003 or 2004ish?
War Games. This is a 2004 event spanning multiple comic runs and crossovers. Stephanie's (fake) death. I'm not sure how good it actually is.
No Man's Land. This 1999 event was the debut of Cass.
That issue where Jason comes back and beats the shit out of Tim. It's in Teen Titans vol 3 issue 29
Damian's debut: Batman #665 (2006)
This is all I can think of atm. I hope it helped! If anyone else has some recs please rb with em!!

I was tagged by the wonderful @itwoodbeprefect to list 7 comfort movies and tag 7 people. thank you 🥰 I'm pretty sure nobody who follows me will be surprised by this list 😂
The Mummy Returns (2001) - the sequel to beat all sequels! it ranks higher for me than the first movie because of Alex, Alex and Jonathan's shenanigans, Evie and Rick's relationship, more Ardeth Bay, and basically just everything
The Mummy (1999) - one of the best movies ever made! this is a hill I'm willing to die on.
Mamma Mia (2008) - I love fun movies with good music 🤷‍♀️
10 Things I Hate About You (1999) - late 90s/early 00s romcoms for the win! every single line is iconic
How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003) - HE LET THEIR LOVE FERN DIE 😭😭😭
Work It (2020) - I have two left feet but I love dancing movies
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020) - girls supporting girls! also, that cheese and egg sandwich 😭
honorable mentions: The Old Guard (2020, if you try to bury your gays, they come back to bury you), Aladdin (both versions. childhood nostalgia plus the jams!), Fired Up! (2009, don't judge)
no pressure tag: @hotchocolateandpillowforts @just-a-glittery-fan @missing-tony @woulddoanythingfor1989tv @carolinemathildes @zarafey @i-need-a-doctor-run

I don't know what comic's you've read but I know my favourites are Birds of Prey. I know you're a fan of black canary so that might already be ticked off the list but If not it's a big one for me. So
- the 1999 - 2009 birds of prey run
- the 2010 birds of prey run
(with emphasis on Gail Simone's run in that)
- the more recent Batgirl and the birds of prey
The four issue 2007 mini Black Canary run is also very good, though a continuation of the birds run.
And I'm also a huge fan of the current BoP run but it's only one issue in.
Most of my comic recs are highly Black Canary based (evidently) but I can also recommend
- Injustice: Gods Among us (though I am biased, as it's what got me into comics and introduced me to Dinah)
- Batwoman (I personally prefer the new 52 to rebirth but enjoyed both)
- Gotham City garage is almost exclusively women
And if you wanted comics that weren't the superhero kind I'd also recommend The Wicked and The Divine from Image comics, I don't know how easy it is to find now but a large part of the cast is women and would be great if you liked mythology.
hey there nonny, thank you soooo much for the recs!
first off omg come off anon i want to be ur friend i love these recs!
second off love that most of ur recs are black canary based SO TRUE of you, i have read most of these im pretty sure, i definitely combed thru as much birds of prey content as i could find though i did not know there was a new run out ! so ill have to look into that for sure. and god reading the black canary 2007 short run was sooooo. (ive also read the green arrow & black canary run).
im pretty sure ive read both of the batwoman runs? i definitely read one of the runs if not both. i cannot tell based off of the random comic screenshots i have on my phone which one/or both for sure. okay wait no this one image is def from new52 and the batwoman rebirth cover looks familar but i have no idea if that means i read it or not
gotham city garage!! im not deep in the comics world but it feels like a very underrated run it was literally so much fun and SO women <3 (demon's head dinah?? hello?????) great comic run second probably only to bombshells in my heart
i will definitely have to give injustice gods among us a try bc clearly you have great taste, ive never been super interesting in the injustice universe mostly bc batman and superman fighting bores me (except for the iconic holy musical batman production by team starkid)
ive heard about wicked & the divine and its definitely one thats been like vaguely on my radar so i probably should look more into it bc it sounds really cool.even tho at the end of the day i might just be.a superhero bitch. i do love women and mythology
anyways sorry for the long ramble, i'm def gonna look into the new bop run, and wicked & the divine, and at least attempt the injustice:gods among us comics !! tysm nonny!

This is a bit arbitrary, but is Oracle’s existence public knowledge pre-Flashpoint? As in, does the average citizen know of Oracle? I’m reading up on Barbara because I’ve only read her pre-Crisis Batgirl stuff so far, but I’m kind of… iffy about the BOP book because of the writers.
No, Oracle's existence wasn't public knowledge. Babs' identity was completely secret until halfway through Ostrander and Yale's Suicide Squad run and even after that most of the heroing community didn't know who she was, much less the general public. Birds of Prey as a book largely functions on the reality that the team is, essentially, a covert ops team led by a figure whose existence isn't public knowledge and whose identity is somewhat unknown even to the larger heroing community. As we move through the post-Crisis timeline, Oracle's existence largely stays secret from the public but most of the heroing community knows that she exists and works with her. She even had a stint where she worked closely with the JLA during the Watchtower era.
In terms of her secret identity: the Bats know that Babs is Oracle, and the Birds know that she's Oracle, and various individual heroes (like Ted Kord and certain members of the Justice League that she regularly works with) know that she's Oracle, but there's still several people who have no idea that Barbara Gordon and Oracle are the same person (much less that she used to be Batgirl).
By the time we get to Blackest Night/Brightest Day in 2010, Babs decided that too many people knew about her existence as Oracle and way too many people out of that group knew that Oracle was Barbara Gordon. So she faked Oracle's death to the larger superheroing community in a very mid and weird BOP plotline called 'The Death of Oracle', leaving only a select number of people (most of the Bats and the BOP) aware that she was still alive. This canonically had major consequences for several heroes who were relying on her intel and were in the middle of dangerous assignments when she went dark, but also wasn't properly explored as much as it could have been since a) The Black Mirror, which Babs co-starred in, was also happening at the time and b) the reboot happened shortly afterwards.
In terms of Birds of Prey the book, Vol. 1 (1999-2009) is pretty solid the entire way through:
Funnily enough I consider Dixon's Birds of Prey run to be one of his Top 3 comics. There's a reason an all-female team title written in the early 2000s survived long enough to be handed over to another writer and it's because Dixon made it work. Babs (and her relationships with other characters) is his one exception when writing women and I still don't know why 20 years later. There are definitely still significant amounts of Dixon Flaws™ that shine through in that run, but he's one of Babs' best writers and is still probably the best Dick/Babs writer we've ever had–largely because he's one of the few writers who actually gives a fuck about Babs as a character separate from her relationship with Dick. Which is weird because it's Dixon, but it's still true.
Gail Simone's run is well-written with good plotlines and has better treatment of the characters overall. It's also extremely racist at times (specifically anti-Asian) and occasionally veers into weirdly immature "high school mean girl bickering" interations. She writes an excellent Babs, but I think she was also dealing with a lot of external and internalized misogyny as one of the only major female writers at DC and as someone who got to where she was because she played somewhat nice with the "good old boys' club." Her work on BOP is not without significant flaws, but it's also a really fun read and I recommend it.
I wouldn't really bother reading BOP Vol. 2 (2010-2011) unless you're a completionist and every post-Flashpoint iteration of the team has been either "decent concept, bad execution" (the New 52 book) or "this is just bad, pull it now" (every version of the book since). If you remove Oracle from the equation and pretend like post-Flashpoint's watered-down Batgirl!Babs is a suitable replacement, you've already lost a fundamental aspect of what made the book work in the first place.
