At lunchtime, while all the teens were playing together on the playground, Bethany reached Level 6 with the school. She took the final education grant from the government, hoping to save it for when she reached the top of her career and could put it towards opening a local university where she could work.

The afternoon session was Music, something Bethany always regretted but knew was essential for the teens' creative development. At least they were slightly better than the children, but not by much! Even Drew Tucker stopped what he was doing to complain about the noise!

Back at home, Hob'rth was cheering himself up by making more Snapdragon arrangements on his flower arranging table. They couldn't really fit any more around their house, and he had already given some to Stephen as a housewarming gift, but perhaps he could donate some to Estelle when she was older and wanted to move out.

Brynn and Sebastian Hate Each Other

I'm always a little anxious when trying out a new narrator, but I was so quickly eased into this book. My favorite audiobooks are always ones that I can just sink into, and forget what's going on around me. This one did not disappoint!

Our introduction to Brynn wasn't stellar - she's on air, in her bubbly Sunup persona, all the while hating how fake she sounds, and the forced cheer she has to put on. When a mistake in cues leads her to think they're off the air, she lets her real feelings show, effectively destroying her carefully built persona.

On a forced apology tour back to her hometown, a place Brynn has desperately been trying to leave behind, she's met with a tour guide who makes it clear how little he thinks of her. What hope does Brynn have of impressing the people of her hometown, if she can't even change the mind of this stranger?

I loved Adalaide Springs, and the people there who were so ready to support and accept Brynn. If only she would let herself accept it. Brynn's done more to hurt this group of people than just badmouth their town on air. Can she face her past, or will it be another act to make the public love her?

I thought this would be a book that I enjoyed, something that passed the time while I was crocheting, but it was so much more! I'm so grateful to the publishers through Netgalley for the chance to try out this audiobook!

🦇 Brynn Cornell is America's Ray of Sunshine—a kind-hearted, girl-next-door cohost of the popular morning show Sunup...that is, until she lets it slip that she hates her hometown of Adelaide Springs on-air. As a last-ditch attempt to smooth over the fans she's lost, Brynn returns home to capture some feel-good footage of her returning to her humble beginnings. Unfortunately, the townsfolk of Adelaide Springs aren't so quick to forgive her. When she arrives, she's greeted by Sebastian Sudsworth; a superstar, award-winning reporter who disappeared from the front lines to hide in Adelaide Springs of all places. They instantly clash. Can Brynn win Sebastian and the rest of the town over in time to save her reputation?

💜 This small-town, enemies-to-lovers romance is a quick, easy read. From the first scene, The Morning Show vibes are as intense as Brynn's job as cohost, but it's obvious she's plastered her on-air personality on like a mask for too long. Bethany Turner does a great job of capturing that atmosphere in a single scene (though, until the epilogue, it's all we really get of it). It's the "secret" backstories of both Brynn and Sebastian that drive the first act. Unfortunately, both backstories are revealed too quickly. Readers never get the chance to delve into the reason behind Brynn's hatred for Adelaide Springs (her mother), especially since a secondary character reveals the truth while she's not in the room. Even with his grumpy demeanor around Brynn, Sebastian's protective nature for Adelaide Springs makes him instantly lovable.

🦇 Unfortunately, there's no REAL conflict driving the story. Brynn is forgiven quickly enough, and the animosity between Brynn and Sebastian isn't compelling or lasting enough to provide any real tension. The character development is minor for them both; Brynn returns to her roots and realizes she hates her job, then goes right back to her old life. Sebastian is still living with the trauma of his past, and though he reveals the secrets he's been keeping to the world, the development feels too forced. Brynn isn't a very likable MC, either, and there's no real redemption for her. Perhaps the biggest pet peeve is the switch between Brynn's first-person POV and Sebastian's third-person POV. This is the second book I've read like this, and I find it awkward.

🦇 Recommended for Fans of The Morning Show and Parks and Rec. Those vibes are obvious from the start.

Back at home, Octavia wasn't exactly doing anything educational. She had spotted townie Gabriel Harmon walking past her house and had quickly rushed out to ask him inside. Teen dance party! This is very unlike her usually shy self!

(A huge thanks to @keoni-chan for Gabriel! Although I had told myself when I started this BACC that I wouldn't borrow so many of other Simmer's Sims, I had a population explosion this round and was in dire need of a batch of townies to replace those that had become playables. I downloaded him, Benjamin Weekes, Evelyn Burkett and Ava DeLuna, all from Keoni's wonderful Angler's Bay BACC, and aged some of them down to teens. If you haven't read Angler's Bay, go do it now - it's so good!)

After Hob'rth and Bethany arrived home from work, their mysterious new arrival appeared on their doorstep.

She put her backpack down, took a deep breath to ready herself and then knocked on the door.

Hob'rth immediately welcomed the stranger in with a hug. Her name was Estelle Blondeau and she was excited to be starting her life in another new town!

I've watched Estelle grow up and grow old in Kayleigh's Brightmaple and then, more recently, I saw her become an exchange student in Rena's Redsborough and I decided I wanted her in Wildflats as well! If she hadn't been an exchange student, she would have been a townie at the very least! So a huge thanks to both creators for the inspiration and for the Sim! Go read their (sort of) BACCs as well!)

You have been assigned a four issue mini comic [<100 pages]. It can be about whatever you want. The only restriction is that it has to be about a minor support character [IE character friends, character parents, reoccuring minor villains, reoccuring civilians]. Which character do you choose, and what story would you want to tell in a four issue mini?

For transparency, I'm asking this question to a bunch of people because I want to see all the ideas everyone has. See what everyone would do.

You know what I'd really love? Writing a Lady Shiva mini. I am stretching the definition of 'reoccurring minor villain' but she's never actually had a proper mini in her own right and she's very VERY rarely had viewpoint. I'd want to pick and choose from her various established backstories, and tone down as many of the League of Assassins connections as possible. I think I'd frame it as four pivotal fights (because that's the language of Shiva)

Fight 1: Sandra and David Cain (the 'sort out the backstory' issue/the apprentice) hitting the following:-

Carolyn and Sandra's childhood in Detroit as Chinese-American diaspora, including trips back to China to the family village there for additional martial arts training.

Carolyn encounters Ben Turner and David Cain, both of whom are training under Richard Dragon, with none of this LOA-linked

David Cain murdering Carolyn to motivate Sandra who he sees as a stronger fighter

Recanonise the Batgirl 2000 Cass origin

Sandra giving Cass to David

Fight 2: Lady Shiva and Richard Dragon (the 'birth of Lady Shiva' and her quest to match herself against the best fighters on the planet/the journeywoman)

This would revolve around Shiva's quest to seek training from various sensei.

References to Dinah and Shiva's shared mentor

Shiva and her encounters with Vic Sage and the first signs of her fondness for cases in which she sees the potential for greater violence, just as David Cain saw in her

Maybe recanonise the Paper Monkey stuff? Either way, have her win accolade and acclaim by facing off against the greatest fighters, killing many of them, and gaining her place in the hierarchy

Lots of wandering swordsman journey

Finishing point has this fight ending with Shiva not killing Richard because she can now best him and has found herself alone at the top as the 'best fighter in the world' - but she sees the power he still has above her - his ability to mentor and create the competition she seeks

Fight 3: Lady Shiva and Dinah Lance (Shiva the mentor, training those she most respects the potential in/the master)

I picked Dinah to frame this one for two reasons: she's my fave AND I wanted a fight with a woman for the second set.

We hit backstory with Shiva actively encountering Dinah, Tim, Connor, Cass. 'Her' heroes who she becomes attached to and to pushing them to be better competition for her.

This is the only bit where I might lean towards League of Assassins in terms of probably Nyssa and/or Talia approaching her to ask her to help train their troops, but Shiva finds it dull.

"Go to sleep Westley I might kill you in the morning" attitude emerging as she finds herself weirdly attached to the people she's pushing.

I would love to include a pay off for her fight with Helena Bertinelli in BOPv2 that was put on 'hold' in this fight with Dinah.

Fight 4: Lady Shiva and Cassandra Cain (The inheritance and future issue)

This would be framed around a NEW encounter between Shiva and Cass rather than one of their old ones

Leans into Shiva's death wish and viewing she's already passed on her inheritance, and that she's now defeatable

I would also want to see Sin Lance and Bethany Thorne appear in this issue (also Tim)

Looking at all four of these characters and how they have the potential to surpass and surprise her.

This one WOULD end with Shiva in a position where she's pushing Cass to kill her as she's now the tired one and Cass once again denying it to her

A large majority of these characters, in a human AU, would be white, because the story is set in a small Nebraska town that would examine such things as religious fundamentalism and the dark underbelly of these 'quaint American towns'. (Stephen King, yada yada) However not all of the characters are born into this hypothetical BarrenClan town, so if you are interested here are the ones that are not.

Cesar is 1/4 Filipino, on his mother Hope's (Hush Puppy) side. His father Dustin Turner (Thrasher) was born in Chicago and moved out to the BarrenClan town. Dustin is white.

Chet is a drifter from somewhere in the Northeast, though it's impossible to get a straight answer out of him. He lives out of a van and he's white.

Evangeline is Polish-Brazilian. I'm not going to be listing her hypothetical deadname for obvious reasons. She traveled around a lot when she was young, which is where she met Hope and Sasha Silver (Seven Silvers). The reason she moved to Nebraska would follow with canon.

Josefine is a German immigrant and moved to North Carolina in her 20s, where she met Dottie. They moved to the BarrenClan town because Dottie's aunt lived there, and passed her house on to her.

Prowl has German heritage, Esther is Chinese, and Margaret is Black. You can learn more about them in this post I made.

Hank is a white guy from Arizona, and met Dodd while the latter was on a trip there. He moved back to Nebraska, accompanied by his girlfriend, Raquel. Raquel is Mexican.

(This ask is actually from last November. Um... don't ask me why it took me 7 months to come up with these names. It just did.)

Mark: Mark has a reasonable fear of most large wild animals (bears, wolves, etc.), but he also has a fear response to deer that's been present even before The Deer mimic showed up.

Cesar: He insisted he wasn't scared of rats but one time walking home, they came across one and Mark turned around to find Cesar instantly sprinting for the other side of the street lmao

Mimic!Cesar: Botflies and their larvae.

Cian: Insects in general. Especially those that are fast moving and/or erratic fliers.

Rebecca: Horses unnerve her and she doesn't understand Cian's love of them.

Sam: No animals, but he is afraid of the woods...

Adam: Black dogs. He doesn't know why, he just doesn't like them.

Azrael: He doesn't like snakes so Eve can't get her pet one out of its enclosure whenever he's over lol

Eve: There's something unnerving about large black dogs.

Bethany: Cockroaches. She loathes them.
