What’s your opinion on the contrast between “silly” and “serious” spaces? Do you think people can have very serious interpretations about a genuine piece of media and also be goofy about it? I’m asking this particularly because I’ve seen people in the Magnus podcast fandoms fight about people “misinterpreting” characters you, Alex, and the many other authors have written. Are you okay with the blorbofication or do you really wish the media you’ve written would be “taken seriously” 100% of the time?
And follow up question, what do you think about the whole “it’s up to the reader (or in some cases, listener) to make their own conclusions and interpretations and that does not make them wrong”, versus the “it was written this way because the author intended it this way, and we should respect that” argument?
This is a question I've given a lot of thought over the years, to the point where I don't know how much I can respond without it becoming a literal essay. But I'll try.
My main principle for this stuff boils roughly down to: "The only incorrect way to respond to art is to try and police the responses of others." Art is an intensely subjective, personal thing, and I think a lot of online spaces that engage with media are somewhat antithetical to what is, to me, a key part of it, which is sitting alone with your response to a story, a character, a scene or an image and allowing yourself to explore it's effect on you. To feel your feelings and think about them in relation to the text.
Now, this is not to say that jokes and goofiness about a piece of art aren't fucking great. I love to watch The Thing and drink in the vibes or arctic desolation and paranoia, or think about the picture it paints of masculinity as a sublimely lonely thing where the most terrible threat is that of an imposed, alien intimacy. And that actually makes me laugh even more the jokey shitpost "Do you think the guys in The Thing ever explored each other's bodies? Yeah but watch out". Silly and serious don't have to be in opposition, and I often find the best jokes about a piece of media come from those who have really engaged with it.
And in terms of interpreting characters? Interpreting and responding to fictional characters is one of the key functions of stories. They're not real people, there is no objective truth to who they are or what they do or why they do it. They are artificial constructs and the life they are given is given by you, the reader/listener/viewer, etc. Your interpetation of them can't be wrong, because your interpretation of them is all that there is, they have no existence outside of that.
And obviously your interpretation will be different to other people's, because your brain, your life, your associations - the building blocks from which the voices you hear on a podcast become realised people in your mind - are entirely your own. Thus you cannot say anyone else's is wrong. You can say "That's not how it came across to me" or "I have a very different reading of that character", but that's it. I suppose if someone is fundamentally missing something (like saying "x character would never use violence" when x character strangles a man to death in chapter 4) you could say "I think that's a significant misreading of the text", but that's only to be reserved for if you have the evidence to back it up and are feeling really savage.
I think this is one of the things that saddens me a bit about some aspects of fandom culture - it has a tendency to police or standardise responses or interpretations, turning them from personal experiences to be explored into public takes to be argued over. It also has the occasional moralistic strain, and if there's one thing I wish I could carve in stone on every fan space it's that Your Responses to a Piece of Art Carry No Intrinsic Moral Weight.
As for authorial intention, that's a simpler one: who gives a shit? Even the author doesn't know their own intentions half the time. There is intentionality there, of course, but often it's a chaotic and shifting mix of theme and story and character which rarely sticks in the mind in the exact form it had during writing. If you ask me what my intention was in a scene from five years ago, I'll give you an answer, but it will be my own current interpretation of a half-remembered thing, altered and warped by my own changing relationship to the work and five years of consideration and change within myself. Or I might not remember at all and just have a guess. And I'm a best case scenario because I'm still alive. Thinking about a writers possible or stated intentions is interesting and can often lead to some compelling discussion or examination, but to try and hold it up as any sort of "truth" is, to my mind, deeply misguided.
Authorial statements can provide interesting context to a work, or suggest possible readings, but they have no actual transformative effect on the text. If an author says of a book that they always imagined y character being black, despite it never being mentioned in the text, that's interesting - what happens if we read that character as black? How does it change our responses to the that character actions and position? How does it affect the wider themes and story? It doesn't, however, actually make y character black because in the text itself their race remains nonspecific. The author lost the ability to make that change the moment it was published. It's not solely theirs anymore.
So yeah, that was a fuckin essay. In conclusion, serious and silly are both good, but serious does not mean yelling at other people about "misinterpretations", it means sitting with your personal explorations of a piece of art. All interpretations are valid unless they've legitimately missed a major part of the text (and even then they're still valid interpretations of whatever incomplete or odd version of the text exists inside that person's brain). Authorial intent is interesting to think about but ultimately unknowable, untrustworthy and certainly not a source of truth. Phew.
Oh, and blorbofication is fine, though it does to my mind sometimes pair with a certain shallowness to one's exploration of the work in question.

TADC ✨EPISODE TWO✨ SPOILERS
my thoughts on this masterpiece by Gooseworx
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
they were the best part of this episode
No. 1: More Gummy Lizards
Tumblr media
this is the only scene that matters ever, thank you. [buddy fr said "pillow time -w-" and plopped down] -> i love that the trio is this comfortable with each other, Gumigoo doesn't even question it
No.2: Cartoon Physics at their FINEST
Tumblr media
man's head will not move from that spot 😭
No.3: Yes, there's even more
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this entire episode was beautiful, and these three were the stars of the show. The way it alternated between a silly little group of buddies trying to save Gumigoo's mom and existentialism? amazing -> it also, i think, plays into the way a cartoon will start off relatively lighthearted and then go entirely batshit in the second season {gravity falls, owl house, steven universe- yk?}
No.4: Ah... this again
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"but you've done this.. for what?" type energy that immediately changes into "for the love of GOD, get this out of me." -> do you think Jax ever stabbed her at one point to see what would happen
No.5: It was supposed to be ME
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jax: I want to blow something up *something blows up* Jax: wait no-
No.6: Jax continues to be my favorite character
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
literally just let him blow up the cosmos, he deserves it -> also, this episode really humanizes Jax a little bit. Not much, but he's not as unflappable as he portrays himself to be. Kaufmo's abstraction honestly affected him, despite his refusal to show it [were the theories right? were they close?]
No.7: you B*TCH
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yes i know that Pomni called him an asshole {and she was correct}
No.8: Not a thought behind those eyes
Tumblr media
the introduction of The Fudge raises so many questions about Candy Canyon tbh, especially paired with the gummy lizards need for a truckload of syrup -> Is the princess as altruistic as she appears? Does she genuinely care about all her subjects? Or are there are types that get snubbed? Is there discrimination between hard candies and gummy candies? Is there a gummy princess?

I meant Hama and Katara... But thank you for the Kanna & Katara Link. I'll go theough it.
ohhh yes i obviously have so many thoughts on hama and katara as well..... hama is the embodiment of who katara could have become had a) her circumstances been slightly different (and worse) and b) had she had less emotional strength & resilience & desire to cling to her own humanity at all costs. like, the fact that katara gets multiple figures who embody the terror of her submitting to her most vengeful instincts and perpetuating the cycle of violence instead of working to end it is honestly quite beautiful, as that tension culminates in "the southern raiders" and katara lets herself prioritize her own humanity over her pain and rage and (totally justified) desire for revenge.
i know a lot of people think that hama and jet are the most politically confused aspects of the show, since they do play into the thing lok does where it's like "all oppressed peoples who employ radical means of resistance are simply cackling mustache-twirling terrorists," and while i do think that the way hama is framed at the end of "the puppetmaster" is in poor taste and lacks nuance, it's also pretty clear to me that a) their trauma is portrayed as sympathetic b) their stories are depicted as tragedies and c) atla doesn't actually demonize violent methods of resistance. like if katara wasn't literally the main character i'd feel much more comfortable making that critique (because lok does do this and it's liberal bullshit and it sucks), but we see katara use violent means of resistance as early as episode 6 of the whole show. she's literally framed as a hero for doing ecoterrorism; even when she's actually in the wrong in that situation, her desire to do whatever it takes to help people and encourage them to fight back against their oppressors is celebrated unconditionally.
the lesson katara has to learn from them is that she must never let her anger and desire for revenge consume her over her love for humanity and her drive to help people. jet and hama are both deeply traumatized in a way that made them prioritize wanting to wield power over others in the same way that they were once made vulnerable and helpless, and katara recognizes that instinct in herself too, that instinct in every person who has been subjected to that degree of violence. hama targets fire nation civilians out of spite, because she was once a regular girl from the southern water tribe who was targeted for reasons beyond her control, made to fight and treated like a villain. the reason she goes after "regular people" instead of targeting actual combatants is specifically because she knows that if the roles were reversed, the fire nation wouldn't care about differentiating her people in those roles; she's giving them a taste of their own medicine.
she used to be a resistance fighter who fought back against the imperialists on her land with everything she had, and it didn't work. she suffered unimaginable horrors, and in the process discovered an ability that would allow her to make others suffered the way she did. no, she's not a good leftist or whatever, but her motivation is understandable. she's driven by pain, not reason, just as katara and zuko are in "the southern raiders," just as aang is in "the desert" when he loses appa, just as sokka is in "the boiling rock." when one is hurting that badly, the desire to ease one's pain supersedes logic, supersedes one's core values in general, the values of grief taking its place. hama has been grieving her entire life; whoever she was before the raids is gone, and now she is someone shaped wholly by pain. and had katara not met hama, been traumatized by her, and thus vowed never to be like her, who knows whether she would have had the ability to take a step back and recognize within herself that she is standing over that precipice, and instead walk away from the threshold of violence, and back towards herself.

Baby Fever
It was one of those Sundays when both Buck and Tommy had the day off. They planned on spending it lounging on the sofa in their sweats but then Maddie paid them a visit with Jee-Yun. She needed to talk to Buck about an inheritance their great-aunt Melody had left them and it was something that couldn't wait. While Buck and Maddie talked, Tommy volunteered to keep Jee entertained.
"According to Melody's will, you get half of the inheritance and I get the other half," Maddie explained.
"But why us? We have cousins, right? Why not them?" Buck asked.
"Well, she always adored us," Maddie shrugged. "And she didn't really trust anyone else."
Buck was about to reply when he heard a loud squeal and looked over to find Tommy chasing Jee around in the living room. Buck felt a tug in his heart when he saw that.
Maddie was saying something but Buck couldn't keep his eyes off Tommy playing with Jee. When he finally caught up with her, he picked her up and threw her in the air before catching her again. He did that a couple times, making Jee squeal and giggle.
"Buck, are you listening to me?" Maddie asked tapping on his shoulder.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm listening," Buck lied and tried to focus on Maddie again but his ears were still on Tommy and Jee.
"Where's Jee? I can't see her," Tommy was saying and then he gasped before saying, "There she is!"
Buck looked over again to find Tommy sitting cross-legged on the floor playing peek-a-boo with Jee. He couldn't name the feeling but suddenly he wanted babies with Tommy because he could tell Tommy would be a great dad.
"If you are more interested in thinking about ways your boyfriend can knock you up then we can do this another day," Maddie's voice brought him out of his thoughts again.
"Sorry, sorry," Buck quickly apologized. "I am listening," he assured her and then paused before adding, "By the way, who says he's going to be the one to do the knocking up."
When Buck coyly looked at his sister, he found her giving him a raised eyebrow. "Oh?"
Buck smirked and shrugged. "So, the inheritance. How and when do we get it?" He asked changing the subject.
After their discussion finished, Maddie and Buck got up and went to the living room where Jee was currently fast asleep, cradled in Tommy's arm. Tommy was also asleep on the couch and Buck felt the same tug in his heart again. He took out his phone and clicked a quick photo of the two of them.
"He's good with kids," Maddie commented.
"He is," Buck replied. "Christopher adores him as well."
Buck went over to Tommy to gently shake him awake. "Tommy."
Tommy slowly opened his eyes and looked confused for a moment before a smile tugged on his lips. "Hey," he whispered.
"Hey, babyboy, so Maddie and Jee have to go now," Buck told him.
Tommy looked at sleeping Jee in his arms and nodded. "Yeah, yeah, of course," he whispered and slowly got up with Jee. He looked a little reluctant as he handed her over to Maddie.
"We'll visit again," Maddie assured Tommy and smiled at him. She then gave Buck and Tommy a one-arm hug before leaving.
As soon as Buck closed the door behind her, he grabbed Tommy by the collar of his henley, pushed him against the door, and crashed their lips together. Tommy let out a surprised sound and Buck swallowed it, kissing him like there was no tomorrow.
When Buck pulled away to kiss Tommy's jawline, Tommy breathlessly asked, "What brought this on?"
Buck trailed kisses down to his neck and bit down on a spot he knew was sensitive for Tommy.
Tommy moaned and tipped his head back, giving Buck more access to his neck.
Buck pushed a knee between Tommy's legs and kissed him again. "I want babies with you," Buck told him.
"Oh yeah? You wanna put one in me right now?" Tommy chuckled.
"You have no idea how much I want that. And trust me, if it was possible, I would do it," Buck replied in between the kisses.
"But that doesn't mean we can't have fun trying," Tommy smirked.
"But that doesn't mean we can't have fun trying," Buck agreed and kissed him one more time.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
adding these two tg hehe
cw. dubcon ?? , sohees icky , +18 mdni
think of sohee as the boy you have to tutor before finals… how convenient that his worst subject is your best, and he’s attracted to the fact that you’re so smart…
sohee is a bit weird from what you’ve heard from others, and honestly when he came up to you after class you were a little skeptical about tutoring him, but you said yes because he was nearly begging and you have a hard time saying no. also he was super cute, how weird could be be?
so you’re in his dorm, sitting at his desk trying to explain the material in a way that he can understand. but he’s not paying attention, not when you were so close to him, not when if he looked just slightly off the screen of your laptop he could see down your shirt, not when your lips that were perfectly glossed and plump were so tempting and kissable, not when he wished that your hand on your thigh was his hand instead.
“do you think you can answer this question on your own?”
he’s snapped out of his thoughts when your tapping his shoulder, words booming through his ears and traveling quickly to his dick. he feels himself twitch in his pants and he knows he’s screwed. he was only halfway understanding the material, but you looked at him expectantly and all the knowledge in his brain turned into mush. so he takes a wild guess and hopes that he gets it right.
but he doesn’t. and he knows before you could tell him, because it’s evident on your face. he wants to feel bad, he feels stupid for not getting it right, but he can’t help but twitch again at the thought of you scolding him for not getting the answer correct.
“sohee, i don’t know how else to explain this to you, it’s honestly not even that hard…” your voice trails as you sigh and he has to bite his lip to stop a whimper from erupting from his throat.
the problem might not have been hard, but he definitely was.
“s-sorry… can you explain it again?” his voice is low and he blinks hard a few times while you start explaining it to him once again.
he can’t help the way his hips start moving in his seat, your words sounding like a foreign language to him besides the small “right?” “got it?” “hmm?” that leave you to make sure he was still with you. he would repeat the words back to you and hoped that you wouldn’t look down or take your eyes off the screen, he was humping the air and finding relief in your voice. his eyes traveled down your shirt again and he accidentally replies to you a bit too breathy, like a moan, and you look at the boy who was next to you. he wad red, his eyes low and his lip between his teeth. then you look down, cock hard in his pants that he was rutting against.
“are you… are you getting off right now? what the fuck?” you jump out of your seat and stare down at the boy with confusion and a tinge of disgust. you can’t help the way you start to feel your second heartbeat between your legs, slight smirk creeping on your face. he likes it, how dirty he feels for this, how you’re calling him disgusting and he’s asking for you to touch him, but you deny him, because he doesn’t deserve your help when he can’t even answer a simple question on his study guide.
you watch as he continues to hump the air while he sits in his seat, hands gripping both sides of the uncomfortable wooden chair as he throws his head back, he imagines those pretty fingers jerking him off, he imagines those lips sucking on his cock while he cums in your mouth, he imagines what your tits would look like squished together and suddenly he’s moaning out loud and trembling under your gaze, his release leaking through the layers of his boxers and thin basketball shorts and creating a big wet spot.
“so dirty,” you hold back a chuckle and he whimpers, he’s still trembling in embarrassment from cumming untouched right in front of you. with a deep breath you move closer to him, sitting back down in your chair but moving it closer to where sohee sits. his eyes shoot open wide when one hand rests on his thigh while the other touches the print of his still hard cock, dipping into the soaked through fabric. he looks at your hands then back at your face, which is dangerously close to his as you speak to him. “finish this problem for me, and i’ll reward you mkay?”
tbh i didn’t understand the perv trope until 2022 & my life has been changed since… also 🍓 anon i’m going to ignore the chocolate chip cookie slander, more like i’m nasty he nasty we cheesecake… hope you liked this i got a little carried away LOL

Monster Con info from the discord
I thought I'd share some of the info we got about the game/characters from the monprom Discord last night. Disclaimer this is just me summarising conversations from the devs and I might be misinterpreting stuff, plus everything is subject to change in the game anyway
General
All the characters obviously have geeky hobbies but some of them have more focus on it than others.
Release is looking at sometime in 2025 hopefully!
Omen (she/they)
this isn't canon yet so might change, but Omen was a normal monster, ascended to a magical evil energy being, got imprisoned (possibly by the Slayers but this isn't final yet) and has only recently escaped. Omen isn't tied to the 'The Old Ones'.
She uses she/they because she doesn't care for mundane stuff like gender anymore but also is somewhat attached to who she used to be. Omen is the most lore-heavy character.
"Omen is a friggin' gremlin" apparently and Mihail is a fan of their dynamic with Liam.
Omen's arm looks to be amputated on the left. It's unknown if their existing arm is a prosthetic or original. This makes her the first disabled romance option! (Mihail also said the team have notes on looking at an RO with mobility aids for MP5)
Doug (he/him)
Mihail said "Doug is a nice dude who can't manage his own finances and blows up his money instantly in nerdy stuff"
April (she/her)
So clowns are mentioned as a monster type in Prom but April wasn't really created with that in mind. The team have been discussing what it means for clowns to be in the Monster Realm and have some answers that the game might explore eventually.
April is an idol/streamer. She has a contract that means she needs to be 'camera perfect' all the time, so using magic (?) all of her 'bad thoughts' get repressed and come out through those balloon animal mascots. "The different mascots are different sort of not-OK-thoughts". Mihail lists some of the existing ones as 'sad, nervous, lazy/glutton (the Garfield one), angry' and 'psycho' which is the bunny.
Nico (they/them)
Nico is a mimic and their gimmick is cosplay. We're going to see a lot of different cosplays from them, like over 5 likely.
They're a bit of a 'thembo' Mihail says "they surely feel like the choice for anyone who liked Scott. They have their differences; but it is evident Nico would fill that spot"

can you write MK11 Smoke x reader, on where they both get into an argument and don't speak for days until one night Tomas sneaks into the reader's room to reconcile?
From Smoke to Fire
Tumblr media
A/n: That sounds so sweet. I love writing for Tomas, my big gentle giant ✨🥹✨
Tags: MK 1, MK AU, Request,
C/w: a little angst, arguing, some fluff, cuddling
Tonight was a beautiful night. Almost beautiful enough to make you forget the tears streaming down your face. Almost forget that Tomas was the one responsible for causing those tears. You don't know how you got into this situation.. that's a lie, you know full and well. Things haven't been that great between you and Tomas for a while now. But you never thought it would come to this...that's another lie, you anticipated that you'd argue. Though you desperately didn't want to. It was inevitable.
"I can't believe you right now!" Tomas says, trying not to shout but he was failing. He had only been home for a few minutes and you two had started bickering. You had tried to be civil, honest. You offered to make him tea. He drank it, said it was bitter. You shot back a snarky remark, he retorted with an even more snarkier comment. Before you knew it, you two were having a screaming match to see could say the most hurtful thing. By the end you both were crying. You felt inside burn with hate and grief mixed into a churning mound of pain. You heart so broken that you feared you die.
You looked into Tomas's eyes, trying to find him, the man you loved, but he was nowhere inside of there. Perhaps he was long gone, maybe you killed him. The two of you can no longer find words to say, you just stand there and stare at him. You hate him, you love him, you want to kill him, you want him to hold you and say it's all right...that he loved.
Tomas stopped talking as well and stared at you, neither of you knew what to say next. "Y/n, I..." He tries something, anything, but he can't find any words. Finally, he turns his back to you and walks away. Hanging is head in defeat. You went to bed alone that night, normally Tomas would come into your room and he'd hold you. Those nights were always beautiful, the way you held each made you feel safe, like you two were the only ones in the world. Now you are alone in your bed, the bed feels so cold like your the the only one on the world.
Days past and you avoided Tomas like the plague, whenever you saw him you would the other, Kuai would ask you about Tomas and you'd fall silent or try to change the subject. But there were moments where one of you caught the others eye. Though it might have been only for a second, it felt like it lasted for 100 years. And you would remember the pain all over again like it had just happened.
One night later you laid alone in your bed like usual. This night felt the loneliest so far. At this point you began to miss Tomas, you missed his smile, the way he'd laugh, how gentle and thoughtful he was, his thoughtfulness. But then you remember that night, the things he said to you, the things you said to him. How could you possibly go back to him after everything that had happened?
"Y/n." You hear from the darkness, and you immediately jump up in bed. Tomas comes from the shadows, his eyes were puffy and red from crying. He raises his hands to show that he's not here to hurt you. "Tomas!?!?" You cry, both in confusion, anger, and joy. "What are you doing here!?"
"I'm sorry, I just-I just had to see you again. I had talk to you and make things right."
"So you broke into my room?"
"Yes, I've been in here for a while, all I could do was stare, I didn't know what to say."
"So you broke into my room, then stayed in the dark and watched me sleep?"
"Yes, but-"
"That's really creepy."
"Yeah...it is, isn't it?" Tomas falls silent and blushes in embarrassment. You try to fight a smile at this, you saw the sky man you fell in love with. But then you remembered what happened and you smile fades. "Y/n, I'm sorry." he shyly spits out. He said there in silence, waiting for you to respond. Finally, you sigh and pat on the spot next to you to sit down. He awkwardly walks over and sits himself next to you, making sure to keep some distance from you.
"What I said, what we said to each other, it wasn't right. And ever since then I've hated myself for how things went. I wish I things better instead of yelling, we could have talked." You sigh as you hug yourself and stare at the floor. "I guess we both handled things terribly." You sit, it feels so strange, this is the first time in awhile where you could look at Tomas. All the painful memories were coming back, but it felt...good to finally address it. "Y/n, I don't want to do this anymore. I don't want to fight, I just want to hold you, I want us to be together and be happy again." There's a strain in his voice, like he's trying to fight off tears. You yourself don't realize that you're crying as well. You slowly turn to look at him, you no longer see him as someone who hurt you, just Tomas. Tomas looks at you hopefully as he sees your intense glare start to lighten. "Y/n?"
Before he could say anything, you jump onto him and wrap your arms around Tomas doesn't hesitate to hug you tightly as well. You both collapse into the bed and for the next few minutes all you can do is hold each other tightly as you cry in each other's arms. Through your tears, you look at each other and smile and Tomas kisses your forehead. "C-Can we start over? Before the fight, when everything was okay." You stare at him lovingly, "No," You say with a smile."We'll take what happened and improve...and I promise to actually put sugar into your tea." And with that, the two of you fall asleep in each other's arms.

You know what? I blame @dragonnarrative-writes for all of this. It's all their fault for poking this part of my brain in the first place even though I was originally just trying to poke theirs ><
Mummy AU part three I guess?
There were only so many places you'd been allowed to go growing up even with a chaperone at your side. Mother brought you up the way any well respected young lady should be, and to be honest you felt much more at home in your skirts and dresses working on your drawings in the parlor than you did climbing over the fence in your backyard like your cousin convinced you to. But your father worried Kyle was improperly rubbing off on you and wanted to find you something to fill your head with where you could still be kept an eye on.
His solution: the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo.
After all, how much trouble could you get into reading about dead guys? At least they wouldn't be trying to chase your skirts as you got older.
Father owned his own shipping company that dealt with the transport of goods and wares, ancient artifacts included. He knew the people who were in charge of the facilities and thought this could be a replacement for the adventures your cousin liked to try to drag you on.
The beautifully painted sarcophagi drew in your imagination like a moth to a flame, chiseled sculptures and pillars depicting ancient beings far different than the god you'd been brought up believing in. And weren't you just the most well behaved little girl when your father brought you along on his business trips. All he had to do was put a book in your hand about the Old Kingdom and you'd stay seated right where he left you until it was time to leave. The drawings in your room turned less from pretty landscapes and fresh vases to imitations of the reliefs you'd seen from photographs of burial chamber walls. Your mother was slightly alarmed at first, but once she saw you still happily keeping up with your piano lessons and needlework she quickly gave in.
Once you were old enough to walk around the city by yourself, you stopped by the museum at least once a week just to spend hours wandering the halls - sometimes more if you noticed a new shipment of wares showing up on your father's ledgers that week slated for delivery. Always so eager to witness the unveiling of new items even if they'd never get put on display. One of the perks of growing up around the loading docks and being a sweet well mannered child to the workers.
You didn't work at the museum with Dr. John Price, but you'd frequented there an awful lot to have come to decent terms with the man. Always gruff, a bit rough around the edges, but boy did he have a mind for antiquities.
He wasn't always the easiest man to deal with; someone who didn't have time for the stupidity that came with being around the uneducated masses during business hours. He'd been working there in some capacity or another since you'd first became a patron, though back in those days he'd been a lot less rigid.
At one point you'd been barred from looking at a book that your father deemed had too much suggestive material in it - it was a tome about Tawaret, goddess of childbirth and fertility - and sent over to your favorite reading chair with something about Pepi II instead. Try as you might you couldn't get into it, mind still lingering on the forbidden subject which was just the latest in your stream of mythology research. You'd been half-heartedly flipping through the pages when a shadow passed you by and casually deposited the desired reading material in your lap, not even bothering to glance your way as he kept moving and turned down another aisle. He was clean shaven back then, but he'd made an impression as a kindred spirit willing to look the other way.
Now almost twenty years later you did your best to stay out of his way and disturb him as little as possible, but every so often you'd be fortunate enough to stumble upon him on a good day where he'd indulge you on certain topics of conversation that flowed smoothly, allowing you to see the lingering passionate twinkle of a younger man hiding behind eyes so full of wisdom and tired experience.
(And if you happened by chance to occassionally pass by a tall, large, tank of a dark robed man waiting patiently for his turn to have an audience with Price on your way out of his office - following you with his deep brown eyes and a cloth cover shrouding the lower half of his face from view - you kept your gaze to the floor and gave him a wide respectful berth, only risking a glance back at the individual long enough to see the broad planes of his back disappearing behind Price's door with a click of the lock)

Anon request: Secondly, how about a wolfstar fic where Sirius (or if you prefer Remus, I mg good with either) does abysmally bad on an exam and is super insecure about it and the other one conforts them? Maybe with something about how exams don’t reflect self worth and stuff?
a/n: Thank you so much for your kind words, anon. I know how hard exam season is and I wish you the best of luck!
wc 488
Sirius was lying in his bed, well the bed he always slept in at Potter Manor. It still felt foreign to him and no matter how welcoming this family was, he wasn’t yet used to calling their home his own. It was the summer after fifth year and it was the best summer of Sirius’s life, no longer terrified at every moment of what awaited him around the corner of Grimmauld Place.
While Sirius was lying in his bed, it’s more accurate to say he was hiding from the world. That morning he and James received their O.W.L. scores by mail and it quickly put a damper on his mood. Objectively, he did wonderfully, receiving high marks on almost every exam. Every exam except for Defense Against the Dark Arts. The only exam he thought he performed so well on that he bragged about it to his friends. It was also the subject he was most proud of his abilities in, nothing proving more that he was unlike his family.
A knock came from the other side of the door and Sirius groaned, “Go away, Prongs.”
“It’s me.” It was Remus’s voice that answered and Sirius, too grateful to be allowed his presence again couldn’t tell him no.
“Okay.” It came out quiet and shy.
Remus entered the room slowly, looking equally as shy but determined to talk something out of Sirius. He walked closer and took a seat on the side of the bed, turning over his shoulder to look at Sirius’s sullen expression. “James said you guys got your O.W.L. results. Are those yours?” He asked, pointing at the unfolded parchment on the nightstand. “Can I look?”
Sirius turned his gaze away but didn’t stop Remus when he reached for the letter.
“These are great scores, Pads. It’s okay you didn’t get excellent on all of them.” He said, watching Sirius’s face closely, deciphering his reaction.
“Well it’s not surprising it was that one I did poorly on.” He answered, petulantly.
Remus knew what he meant but still needed to hear his friend say it.  He carded his fingers through his black curls while he continued, needlessly aware of how far from platonic he was being. “What do you mean?”
“I mean I was practically bred to be good at dark arts, it’s no wonder I turned out like this.”
“Sirius, you were the first person in our year to cast a patronus and you’re one of the strongest duelers at Hogwarts. It doesn’t matter what a written test says.” Sirius’s eyes met Remus’s again and Remus could see the guilt behind them.
“Moony,” he whined.
Remus held his cheek in his hand, soaking up the soft features. “I know you’re good, Pads, we all do. That’s more important than an exam.” Sirius turned his head to leave a kiss on Remus’s palm. They’d have to talk about that more later though.

I know Martina! We shared all our classes last year in uni
wow, that's really cool! i'm always impressed by footballers who can juggle playing at such a high level with working hard on their studies. especially if they are studying a difficult subject, like martina is doing with biological sciences. (those types of courses were the most difficult for me in school 🙈)
i love people who break stereotypes, like the nerdy footballer. 😉
Tumblr media
i also thought that martina had a really nice match against madrid cff the other day. the fun things about these types of matches are that you can really see the potential of the filial. she and jana can be the mapi and irene pairing of the next generation.
Tumblr media
in the future when she becomes a full time starter for barça, you can say you knew her back then!

I just found out Viserys is only 10 years older than Alicent in the books, they married when she was 19 and he was 29.
Which begs the question: why did they make Alicent a child bride who was forced to marry a man old enough to be her father in the show?
I knew alicent was 18 but didn't realise V was that young, I thought he was mid-late 30s. That age gap isn't too bad by asoiaf standards. He married Aemma when she was 11-13, put her through all of those pregnancies and he was an adult when they married I believe (EDIT: he was 16 when he married Aemma so not yet an adult but still notably older than Aemma) and it was also him that married Helaena to Aegon when they were also just teens so he is still pretty gross.
As for the creative choices on the show, aside from recycling general abuse/grooming/SA storylines that GoT and GRRM himself used, I always thought they merged book Alicent's tragic backstory with the previous king Jaehaerys with her relationship with Viserys
"When her father was named Hand of the King by King Jaehaerys I Targaryen in 101 AC, thirteen year-old Alicent accompanied him to court together with her brothers and mother. In 103 AC, Alicent became the constant companion of King Jaehaerys, whose health was failing.[N 1] She fetched his meals, helped him wash and dress, and read to him. In the end, King Jaehaerys sometimes mistook her for his daughter, Saera Targaryen. Jaehaerys eventually died the same year, while Alicent was reading to him"
This outline makes me think they've definitely merged Alicent/Jaehaerys with Alicent/Viserys. The show definitely adapted this from the book: She was forced to become the companion and carer to the king by her father, She tends to personal care needs of both kings like bathing them, She gets mistaken for the kings daughter near the end in both instances, She's still a victim of grooming via her father who for sure would have married her off to J if he wasn't so old and unwell. Viserys in the show is essentially taking on the role sickly older man with a teenage companion. Book Alicent may be a victim and went through trauma in her teenage years but thankfully was not subjected to marriage, pregnancy and SA at 15. As for her relationship with book Viserys I think by that point she wanted to be queen? she wouldn't have had the power to turn down a proposal from the king or go against her father in any case but she also had goals of her own and I imagine after taking care of a sickly old man for years, probably dealing with rumours that she was perhaps his mistress then she probably thought marrying the new younger king and having some power in her own right, even if it is through marriage and having sons that would inherit the throne then she was okay with that. Girlie put in the work so I can hardly blame her for wanting her son on the throne, and wanting to benefit herself.
Final thoughts: I feel like teen alicent on the show is probably similar to how she was as a teen in the books so it wasn't purely a show invention. Alicent in both stories was groomed, used by her father, made to be the "companion" to the king, was probably pretty isolated because of this companionship. The difference is Alicent grew up and even if her goals were influenced by her fathers manipulation. She HAD goals, wants and desires. Alicent was the one who was scheming behind the scenes, who was head of the green council and willing to be ruthless if she had to be. I'm glad the show added a few more layers to her character and didn't have her be a two dimensional evil stepmother but they went too far in the other direction and in an attempt to make her more likeable she ends up overshadowed by the men in her life who take her power. throughout the show regularly mocked, abused, SA'd and worried about her children safety because Viserys won't protect them. Although this is clearly one reason why she resents rhaenyra and her life, they never used it to fuel alicents own wants and desires and what she's willing to do and who she's willing to step on to get it. Alicent is the queen but rarely do we see her pull rank (she should've with Larys) and she often goes back on her `power moves or doesn't follow through (like actively plotting to get Aegon on the throne) and even apologises for her "behaviour" (the aemond incident) which is not just inconsistent but makes her come across as more hypocritical that she is meant to be. The show took away the little power she had by not allowing her to fully embrace what she wanted for herself and her children.

I just wanna say that I absolutely LOVE Butterfly. It’s kinda the only fanfic I care about at the moment lmao I am LOCKED IN. The story itself is great, all of the characters (even the ones everyone hate rn) are interesting, the writing is phenomenal…I could go on and on.
I have a few thoughts I wanted to get out of my head. These aren’t suggestions (cuz it’s your story and I trust where you’re gonna take it), it’s moreso just kinda be me rambling lol:
Sasuke- I know you’ve mentioned he’s going to show up again later, but I’m so anxious to see the role he’s going to play. I don’t really want it to be a romantic thing with Hinata (I am a firm NaruHina lover lol) but I would love to see him be some kind of a protective friend for her? In my head he and Hinata already know each other; like they had some type of group therapy for traumatized teens or after she was removed from her dad’s care she was temporarily in a group home where she met Sasuke and they got to know each other idk. He knows her story and the pain she deals with, and is able to relate in a sense. So he doesn’t want to see her be taken advantage of. Idk, again this is NOT a suggestion lmao just rambling.
Strength- I would argue that Hinata’s the strongest character in the story so far. Even stronger than Naruto. She’s been thru absolute hell and suffers with severe anxiety and depression. The fact she struggles with suicidal ideations and is still making the choice to live is a testament to her strength. I hope that as the story progresses, Hinata starts to recognize that in herself.
Naruto- love the way you write Naruto in this; the chapters in his pov are some of favorites tbh. As someone mentioned before, I too would love to get a few jealous Naruto scenes. Especially since he’s starting to actually *see* Hinata and recognize his attraction to her. I’m assuming that as the story progresses, Hinata will grow into her own person and become somewhat independent of Naruto (like getting her own friends); is that something Naruto might feel threatened by? Since he does have a selfish streak and is immature, I wonder if he would have an issue with keeping Hinata all to himself.
I think those were the main ramblings I had. Chapter 8 is my absolute favorite so far cuz of the cute NaruHina moment we got. I know smut is probably a ways away but I cannot WAIT till we get to it cuz you are one of my favorite smut writers tbh. Anyways that’s all for now. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us!
Thank you so much! 🙈💕💗so so so happy you're enjoy the fic that much 💕makes my heart do cartwheelssss 🏃🏾‍♀️🤸🏾‍♀️🏃🏾‍♀️💗☺️🫶🏽 and thank you so much for dropping love in my inbox, I absolutely adore you all that do I swear 🥹
Ahhhh, you have some really interesting ruminations🙈
Sasuke- Surprisingly a lot of readers have been waiting to see how Sasuke fits into all this🤭I've gotten some incredibly creative scenarios and prediction from commenters and anons that I've actually added to his role and even moved his entrance up in the timeline😄This is a very interesting scenario and I really, really like it a lot! So many people really want a protective friend Sasuke and I can't say the idea isn't unbearably adorable 💕
Strength- You hit the nail on the head for sure🫡💕Hinata's inner strength is one that's often overlooked, underestimated and underappreciated when compare to more overt forms of strength, or socially constructed ideals of what it means to be strong, and I've really, really been wanting to make a point in the world of fanfiction, specifically the Naruto fandom of fanfiction, that strength is not always aggression, violence and bitchy attitude 🤦🏽‍♀️ because I've seen, for years now, this narrow, short sighted standard of who is strong and who is weak being perpetrated and it's always, always bothered the crap out of me 😤With Butterfly, I'm hoping to open minds and break molds we've been taught to believe are absolute👎🏽but are actually highly subjective👈🏽 I swear, so many of my fics are 'break the mold' type fics, lol, I think I just like to nay say the nay sayers, ya know, shine light on areas and topics that many may make negative assertions and toxic assumptions about while in reality, know very little about the subject matter at all. I think it opens the door for more compassion, understanding and inclusion ️🫶🏽 and honestly, that's what I'm all about.
Naruto- I love, love, love me a Naruto POV 🙈idk what it is about Naruto in particular since I love most make POV but it is soooo much fun being in his head 🤭Butterfly!Naruto and Prey!Naruto are two of my fave Naruto POV's to write in, both are so much fun in different ways 😄For sure Naruto's gonna have his jealousy moments, he's too hot headed and selfish in Butterfly not to🤭Its definitely not out of the realm of possibility that he'll feel some type of way about not being the center of her attention🤔right now, he's the golden boy, he's got the coveted place at her side, he's got exclusive access nobody else has, losing that, well, he might not be too keen on it🤭although, he's been trying to introduce her to his friends and help her with her speech problems, so maybe he'll take it as a source of pride that he's help her find her confidence🤔that's why I love this Naruto 🤭he really can go either way. Like, on one hand, he can be sweeter than cotton candy, some real tooth rotting sweetness, but on the other hand he can be a selfish asshole making scummy choices just to get what he wants😅he gets tunnel vision, and the only thing that matters is reaching his goals by any means necessary. He's just a really fun character🤭
I super duper appreciate you leaving your ramblings here!! I enjoy each and every one of them! Chapter 8 is near and dear to me too!! I enjoyed writing it so, so much, the cuteness almost melted my laptop 🙈💕 I cannot wait to do more sweet bonding scenes for them ️🫶🏽 that's honestly why my fanfics be so long, I get so caught up in just enjoying and marinating in NaruHina love 🙌🏽its like a virus I never wanna get rid of 😫 Smut is indeed a ways off, but I can't wait to get to it too 🙈 and tys, I'm honored to be one of your faves💕 Thank you, thank you for dropping by!!! I really loved seeing your ramblings! 🫶🏽

Honestly with all the overlap between sci-fi and fantasy fans, I’m really surprised that “high fantasy in space” isn’t more of a thing.
There are some things generally assumed by most to be sci-fi that I’d personally label space fantasy, like Star Wars, where the high tech is just there as a backdrop to a classic heroic story of good guys vs. bad guys, who are definitely doing magic (by using the force). The point of Star Wars isn’t the tech or anything, it just happens to be a tale told in space. It contrasts pretty starkly with something like Star Trek, where the vast majority of episodes revolve around exploring whatever scientific or philosophical concept the writers thought would be kinda neat that week, using established characters as a vehicle for said exploration.
I think one of my favorite things about Honkai Star Rail is that it freely and unabashedly mixes sci-fi and fantasy. It just goes “You are a walking neutron bomb. Also turns out your bestie is from a self-reincarnating race of dragon people with powerful water and illusion magic. They live on this big, planet-sized ship that’s dedicated to hunting down this one cosmic horror that cursed all the ship’s inhabitants with immortality, under the banner of this other cosmic horror that exists solely to kill the first cosmic horror. Let’s go on vacation to the theme park planet, the actual resort is technically an Alice-in-Wonderland style dream triggered by the same kinda cosmic-horror-gifted bomb as you. Your new friend is a meme. By the way, did we tell you about the one time this super-genius harnessed the power of *imagination* to build a death ray that instantly obliterated a bunch of planets? That was kinda fucked up, huh.” Sometimes Star Rail tries to give explanations for its tech in a way that seems believably sciencey. Sometimes shit’s just straight up called magic or it’s from some deity or another and none of the characters present have a good understanding of why, so you all just go about your bullshit. It makes it work within the context of its established universe.
Cosmic horror in general is often (but not always) found in sci-fi, but where the point of sci-fi is to expand on and detail a concept in a believably scientific way or explore the impacts of a scientific thing, the point of cosmic horror is that there is a Thing that is beyond human understanding or comprehension. Sci-fi is a fun thing to insert it into, because the more scientifically sensible and well-understood elements of the world you have, the more jarring that becomes.
Then you’ve got things like Dungeon Meshi, which exists in an inverse of something like Star Rail: it takes a very Tolkien-inspired Dungeons and Dragons-esque setting, and then details it in a very scientifically sensible way. There is magic, and there are these fantastical monsters, yes, but the monsters are parts of their own delicate and intricate ecosystems, they are edible, and they have very particular nutritional values and ways you can cook them! The protag’s biggest strength lies in him being a nerd about monster biology. Magic, too, by the end of it, ends up with a plausible enough explanation as well. And the explanation is a cosmic horror! In this way, Dungeon Meshi, despite being built entirely off of very easily recognizable and classic fantasy tropes, is probably more accurately classed as sci-fi.
I just love all of it. Can I get like 50 more of these fucked up lil mixtures of science and magic please?

Tangentially related to some of the discussion i posted earlier but quiet literally the first RW Art Month i participated I did it completely on whim like, one day before it started. And I mostly did it because I hadn't drawn a ton of rain world and wanted to draw more. Fandom presence was a lot smaller than and I was one of a handful of artists who did the entire thing. Fast forward and I still do Art Month and I've gotten to work with VC directly. But it was quite literally something I decided to do completely on whim that set the ball rolling, and for something a lil more niche and certainly with a lot more dev/fandom art involvement than most. It's really random how and why you might get noticed more than usual, especially with the "toss it into the search and hope it pays out' mechanism of Socmed
#t.extpost#and im hardly the fanciest art month artist out there so it wasnt even about being a jaw droppingly talented artist or whatever#and while artmonth for rw is still given a huge focus its also a much much bigger thing now with a much bigger number of participants#which is cool! its awesome how many people i saw do most if not all of last art month! and VC is really good about not just repping the#most popular artists or fanciest pieces#but theres So Much More there now and while its great for finding artists its also impossible to get Everyone in there you know?#Although they absolutely try#And this is like. one of the most fanartist involved devs ive ever seen in terms of both celebrating the art their fans make and actively#bringing those fans in to contribute#and its /still/ hard to get going just because thats how Posting is#i used to be more of a hk artist which is both a huge fandom and riddled with stunning artists but theres So Many#and niche fandoms are niche so youre more likely to connect with people but less likely to see a ton of engagement regularly -#probably best example i have for that was being briefly fixated on patapon.#Its just messy to try and find the hack that sets you up#just have fun and jump around and make what you like#get a sense of feeling for your style and some people will stick around for that vs. strictly the subject matter#others will look up the thing you switched too and some wont engage#you cant really control it#so have fun and draw that thing you randomly thought about at 2 am that doesnt match your blog#draw for that forgotten rpg you liked when you were 15 or draw for the 70 player max steam game you played for this week#you never really know what will happen#but its not really worth worrying about what will happen either
