A woman's heart is a deep ocean of secrets. But now you know there was a man named Jack Dawson and that he saved me... in every way that a person can be saved. I don't even have a picture of him. He exists now only in my memory.

We can love each other. I'll do that for you, if you really meant all that. "'Til death do us part." It'd be enough. Just you and me here on this farm. All I really want is to be loved. I've had such a hard time without it lately.

But I have to beg of you one thing. It’s just one. Do not eat. Taste. Savor. Relish. Consider every morsel that you place inside your mouth. Be mindful. But do not eat. Our menu is too precious for that.

The day Taylor Swifts new album album came out every news outlet and radio station from national to local in my country was talking about it ALL DAY and even now, they’re still talking about her new music. Imagine the impact she could have just by simply posting #freepalestine or anything to show support for the victims of the current genocide. Don’t sit there tell me celebrities don’t have an impact on politics when they make national headlines by releasing new music. A famous persons voice is just as powerful as their career and their stances on certain issues or lack thereof do matter.

The whole Larys/Alicent bothers me not just because it’s another example of the writers fetishising female abuse and unnecessary ableism but simply from a writing perspective it doesn’t make any sense!
Naerys and Rhaella Targaryen were one of the most victimised women in House Targaryen but even then I would shout “jumping the shark” if George implied some lowly Lord can make them preform unwanted sexual acts.
So if it’s unrealistic for these two how tf does it make sense for Alicent??? She’s the most powerful woman in Westeros, one word from her Criston would gut Larys, Aemond would feed him to Vhagar, Aegon would have him executed, hell even Viserys would do something!
She’s so above him in the pecking order it’s insane, but the writers don’t respect her so this is what she’s been reduced to.
I agree it’s absolutely nonsensical and there’s no way he’d get away with sexually abusing the queen of the seven kingdoms. No matter how much blackmail meterial some random lord would have on a royal, they’d be losing their tongue or their head at the mere suggestion of sexual favours in exchange for information or their silence. Vaemond lost his head, with no arrest or trial in front of a crowd for calling Rhaenyra a whole and no one did anything so Larys has nothing over Alicent.
Even if I was willing to suspend my belief enough to think Alicent wouldn’t pull rank and threaten him with execution for kinslaying at the mere suggestion of sexual favour - let’s say Alicent is so used to being abused and used that she feels powerless to stop it - it’s still a huge stretch to believe any targaryen Queen would be abused by a lowly lord
I also find it highly unlikely that criston wouldn’t figure it out something was wrong given that he’s her personal guard and would likely be outside. He spends enough time with her to notice if she was in distress or if she would arrange for him not to be around with larys there he’d get suspicious and given that he killed a man over a disrespectful comment towards Ali, and got away with it, he would brutally murder Larys over assaulting her and face no consequences. Aemond is also very perceptive when it comes to Alicent and her emotions so he might get suspicious of Larys, who would then become a dragon snack before Aemond even gets the full story. Aegon despite being shown as lazy and uninterested in the goings on would also jump at the chance of feeding larys to sunfyre. I’d argue that Otto, the hand who is essentially acting in place of the king wouldn’t allow his daughter, the queen, to be subjected to sexual exploitation by a lowly lord and would likely have larys report to him with any information with the constant threat of execution hanging over him. Even if they want to strip Alicent of her power and autonomy, the idea that the powerful men (bc they love saying she lives in service of men) in her family, her loyal murderous guard and even her sickly king husband would allow this to happen for 6+ years and just wouldn’t notice I’d ridiculous.
I’m sure they’ve got some weird thing about using sexual abuse to punish Alicent for “choosing the side of men” and also keeping her in a victim role, instead of a leadership role. even when she is supposed to be the most powerful player in the room. The fact that they allegedly wrote a scene where blood rapes Alicent during the murder of her grandson, in front of Helaena and the children, a scene disgusting enough that Olivia outright refused and caused her, Matt and Emma to call a meeting last year to get the scene removed from the script just solidifies for me that they’re doing exactly what d&d did by using rape and SA as shock value and torture porn. At least d&d never tried hiding behind a “feminist perspective”

No, but if we stop to think about it, indeed the set up for the dance is so weak, specially when George had a better set up right then and there that he solved with the council of 101: Rhaenys vs Viserys. The daughter of the eldest son and heir vs the son of the second son. This should have been the configuration of the dance.
Then he had the second best set up: Rhaenyra vs Daemon. The daughter of the king vs the brother of the king.
He screwed over both scenarios and went with the worst one, one that would never really make much sense, especially when you consider the reasons why Rhaenyra was chosen as an heir (to avoid Daemon ascending to the throne). Not only Viserys fixed this problem by marrying again and having not only one, but three sons… Rhaenyra went to marry Daemon. Like, there’s no realistic scenario where she wouldn’t have been disinherited right then and there, or where the realm wouldn’t rally behind Aegon instead of her, especially when she fucked off to Dragonstone instead of trying to assert herself as heir and future queen in KL.
George just made really bad choices overall, that’s why the dance feels kind of weird and some plot points are very forced to fit into the narrative instead of feeling like natural consequences of what was happening.

It’s so sad that in order to get people to care about Palestine, we completely ignore the thousands of innocent men who have been killed in this genocide. We have to say “children”, or “women and children”, with slightly lower numbers, because the full death count is somehow seen as less tragic when we include men.
My heart aches for the innocent men of Palestine who have been slaughtered. You mattered just as much as anyone else. And for the men who are doing everything in their power to help their fellow Palestinians, we love and respect you. Thank you for all that you do.

imo Alicent and Rhaenyra are both victims of the “benevolent misogyny” trope. The writers cannot bring it in themselves to write ruthless, politically minded women because that’s “unnatural”, women must always be perpetual victims.
Alicent is no longer the leader of Team Green, that’s solely Otto who has so little respect for his daughter he doesn’t even tell her about the coup to put Aegon on the throne. The QUEEN CONSORT/DOWAGER/MOTHER OF WESTEROS is so weak and lacking in any real power some lowly Lord is sexually abusing her, and we’re meant to believe this makes total sense.
It’s also incredibly ableist that they gave Larys a foot fetish.
Rhaenyra isn’t ruthless nor do her enemies fear her, how can you even suggest a fragile woman like herself would order a man’s death and then feed his carcass to her dragon?! It’s way more realistic that she runs crying to her daddy to save her and then Daemon acts on his own accord because no way would she demand he kill Vaemond.
It’s not just them btw:
Baela: no longer the spunky Arya Stark of HotD, she’s a background character with 0 personality.
Rhaena: the peacemaker to her more hot headed sister is gone, now she just stands around looking pretty. I have a funny feeling they won’t even include Morning.
Rhaenys: she can’t think for herself, everything she does is because her husband tells her to. Gone is her supportive mother/daughter with Rhaenyra, now is a woman who genuinely believes her DiL killed her son but supports her anyway because her told her to. Where’s the logic in this?
Helaena: she’s an autistic coded dragon dreamer but this isn’t developed on, she just rambles but no one bothers listening to her. She has a role in the Green Council, urging Aegon II to make peace instead of declaring outright war. This is removed and instead she’s another habitual victim no one cares about
Laena: the biggest victim of the writers, a misogynoir cocktail ensured she never stood a chance.
You've put everything wrong with the way women were written perfectly and I absolutely agree with every point. By trying to make the female leads more likeable they ended up giving more power to men which is something they attempt to criticise in the narrative. I would love for these problems to be fixed in s2 and for Baela, Rhaena and Helaena to be fleshed out but I'm not holding out hope.

*alicent voice* where is our feminine rage? where is our agency?

what are your thought on changing characters like Alicent, who is meant to be a villain not a perpetual victim. from how they are portrayed in the books?
Honestly? It doesn’t actually bother me that they’ve made changes, it had to be reworked for tv and fire and blood is written in the style of a history book which is different from adapting a story like asoiaf which is from multiple character povs and easier to accurately adapt (yet they still fucked it up, but that's another story). I get the narrative choice of “this is the true story of the dance” from the perspectives of the two queens and both sides of the war. What bothers me is the inconsistency and inability to commit to making Alicent and Rhaenyra make morally grey decisions and sometimes be the bad guy. I understand wanting your leads to be sympathetic but look at Shiv Roy, she’s sympathetic, a victim of misogyny in a male dominated space and she is still not written as the victim or the hero of the story. Shiv is just as bad as everyone else but we can feel her struggle and still root for her. That’s how characters like Alicent and Rhaenyra should have been written.
The female leads don’t need to be more passive to be likeable, that’s the opposite of feminist writing. I want to watch them make selfish, awful decisions that I don’t condone while still feeling for their struggles and understanding why they had to do that. I wanted Alicent to look viserys in the eye and she’s not sorry for being the only person in that room to defend their children the night Aemond lost an eye and that after that night, she’d only ever support Rhaenyra when she’s cold in her grave. That after that night she would only be his wife in name only (queue the elder abuse claims). I want Rhaenyra to order vaemonds death and show us the lengths she’s willing to go to. I don’t want daemon being the one trying to convince rhaenyra to go after her throne, I wanted Rhaenyra to tell Otto she’s taking what’s hers with fire and blood. I don’t want them getting close to these points and then back peddling because it’s too mean.
The writers have also tried blending their original ideas and who they want the characters with book plots and book actions which can work well if you do it correctly but they’ve done it in a way that makes it look as if the characters motivation are inconsistent. Yes please, flesh out Alicent more and don’t make her out to be a two dimensional evil stepmother but don’t strip her of her agency and her goals for her family, goals that she believes will ensure their survival. Sure, make Rhaenyra the protagonist and someone we want to root for but don’t strip her of her agency and her ability to be ruthless when it comes to securing her claim and protecting her children.
