Review: Into The Woods, Theatre Royal Bath
Review: Into The Woods, Theatre Royal Bath
A largely strong set of performances can’t hide the directorial overload in Terry Gilliam and Leah Hausman’s production of Into The Woods at Theatre Royal Bath “I wish a lot of things” A choice is made in going to see Into The Woods at Theatre Royal Bath. Terry Gilliam and Leah Hausman’s production was initially scheduled for the Old Vic but was axed after staff raised concerns about comments…

summary: where oscar has done everything in his power to make his feelings for you as obvious as possible, but you are simply quite clueless to the poor boy’s advances pairing: oscar piastri x driver!reader warning: fluff, oblivious reader
note: i wrote this in two hours and it's purely for fun. i did not bother thinking about how realistic this could be at all so it's a bit ridiculous i think

sometimes, oscar just wants to run into a wall and knock himself out.
maybe that would shake his brain enough for it to formulate a plan for you to finally realize all the oh so awfully obvious hints he’s been dropping. he’s been so obvious that the entire world knows it; all the other drivers, mechanics from practically every team, reporters, fans. literally everybody has picked up on his pitiful attempts at catching your attention but you.
or maybe he needed to push you down a flight of stairs and knock you out for you to finally figure out that he likes you as more than friends. because at this point, it’s starting to get ridiculous. he’s been pursuing you since f3. in every ridiculous challenge with prema to every track walks and everything in between, he’s done everything possible to show you that he likes you, fancies you, absolutely besotted to the sound of your voice.
that never seems to discourage him though, if anything, it only makes him like you more. robert once joked that you’d put a spell on him and oscar can’t quite deny it if he’s being honest.
“y/n, wait up!” he called to you right before the driver’s parade, leaving lando behind him, who whispered a quick good luck to him.
hearing your name made you turn to him, an instant smile on your face that made oscar’s heart violently lurch forward. most of the time, you preferred to keep your hair in a tight ponytail, wanting all the little strands out of your face when you’re on track but this time, strands had fallen off the paintail, framing your face in such a perfect way that knocks the breath out of oscar’s lungs.
you’re perfect in his eyes all the time of course; even in the few times you’d pushed him off track, but there’s something so ethereal about you when your smile is for him.
charles, your teammate, and lewis whom you were previously talking to subtle stepped away from you in order to give the two of you a moment. charles throws oscar a small thumbs up with that maniacal smile of his whenever he’s fortunate enough to be able to watch oscar absolutely get crushed by y/n’s cluelessness every time he tries and drops a hint to his feelings.
“hey, osc,” you greet, easily falling into step with him.
“hey, how’s the down under treating you?” he asked, trying to act casually as he buried his hands in his pockets.
he winced at his own words. how’s the down under treating you? really?
at least you seem to find it amusing as you award him with a chuckle, hand instinctively wrapping around his arm the way girls do when they’re really comfortable with you and don’t want you to get lost in the crowd. you only ever do it to him (and he’s made sure to check) and it never fails to quite literally turn him to mush.
“you know i’ve adored it!” you gush. you love australia, this is no secret to everyone , so much so that you’ve joked about it being your second home race, to which oscar have always enthusiastically nodded in agreement to. “charles, alexandra and i went cafe hopping all around melbourne yesterday.”
oscar hummed, trying to hide the hint of disappointment in his face that you hadn’t asked him to accompany you like the few times in the past but he knows that you and charles’ girlfriend have formed a very close friendship. “is that so? i’m glad you had fun.”
you smile up at him. “how about you? i reckon it’s nice being back home, isn’t it?”
“absolutely. the family’s been asking about you, by the way.” he just wanted you to keep talking. you could talk his ears off for hours and oscar would never complain.
you face instantly light up at that. “i’ll make sure to drop by the mclaren garage later. i miss nicole.”
“she missed you too,” he says before clearing his throat. “so um, are you immediately flying out tomorrow?”
you shook your head. “no, i’m planning to stay for a couple more days.”
“oh good.” he thanked god his hands were buried in his pockets so you can’t see how much they’re shaking. “you’re free tomorrow then?”
you nod and he nods back at you awkwardly. “yeah.”
“oh good.” stop. stop. he already said that. “do you want to check out that restaurant we went to during f2 maybe?”
your face lights up again and your hand that’s holding on to his arm squeezes it ever so slightly in excitement. “oh absolutely. maybe i can bring charles and alex along and you can bring lando and logan.”
oscar wanted the ground to just swallow him up. he could probably shout i love you at you while staring directly into your eyes and you’d think he’s talking to someone behind you. one time in f2, he wrote all his feelings for you in a note and gave it to you only for you to hand it straight to robert without even glancing at it thinking he just wanted for you to pass it along. another time, he spent hours and hours trying to gather the courage to wrap his arm around your shoulder only for you to grinned up at him and wrap your arm around logan’s shoulder thinking he’d just wanted the three of you to huddle around. oscar is running out of ideas if he’s being honest.
“that sounds…fun, but i was hoping, maybe, it could just be — you know, the two of us. like old times,” he manages to let out.
“poor oscar,” lando says as he, charles, max and lewis watch your interaction.
“oscar should just kiss her already,” max said.
charles cackled at that, shaking his head. “she’d probably think it’s a friendly kiss.”
“maybe he just needs to shake her shoulder and scream im stupidly in love with you right on her face,” lewis joked as they kept watching the two of you.
oscar watched as you let go of his arm, leaning onto the railing for the parade. you seem to take your precious time twisting the cup of your water bottle open and torturing oscar at the way your throat constricted as you drank water before you turned back to him with a smile. “yeah, sure, osc. i’d love that.”
oscar returned back to the group of boys with a dopey smile on his face, high off of you as lando slapped him on the shoulder in a small congratulations.
charles couldn’t help but laugh at the look of the younger driver. “y/n’s broken him, i think.”
logan tried to contain his amusement as his australian best friend fell on his hotel room’s couch with his face buried in his hands, groaning in frustration and looking red in the face. oscar wore a loose white button up with a dark pair of jeans. he’d even worn his nice shoes for the occasion, wanting to be as presentable as possible as he picked you up from your hotel room to see you in the prettiest sundress in the most beautiful shade of blue that contrasted perfectly with your skin.
the two of you ate and laughed and walked around with you holding on to his arm as oscar gathered the courage all night to tell you how he felt.
“and then what happened?” logan asked as oscar groaned, frustratedly running his hands through his hair.
“i told her i love her,” he muttered to himself and you smiled at him with that beautiful smile of yours.
“that’s great, osc!” logan tried to cheer him up, clapping him on the back as he remained hunched over the couch. “what did she say?”
that seems to be a sore spot as oscar only groaned louder, petulantly kicking his shoes off. he can’t quite fathom how such a perfect night turned to him crashing in his best mate’s room so he can vent.
“she said, and i quote ‘aw, osc. i love you too. you’re one of my best friends.’ and then i just about died on the spot.”
logan winced at that, his hand now rubbing on oscar’s shoulder in comfort. “well, maybe next time the wording should be ‘i’m in love with you’?”
but oscar only groaned again. “this is a lost cause. best friend? is that all i am?” oscar starts his rant. “am i just one the many best friends in her life? will we drift apart after we both retire? at this point, i’d count myself lucky if i ever get invited to her wedding. maybe if i want to push my luck, i could be the fucking godfather of her kids.”
and logan only winced again because he never even thought someone could be that clueless and oblivious.
“you look beautiful, y/n,” oscar tells you as he passes you by the media pen, ignoring the cameras and lando’s knowing grin.
“thanks, osc. you look quite handsome yourself.” a dust of pink covers your cheeks as you smile at him, hand reaching to squeeze his lightly as you pass him by, being led by your pr team.
for a moment, oscar freezes on the spot, unable to stop the way all his blood rushed to his cheeks and the smile that stretched across his lips.
“mate, pull yourself together,” lando teases, pushing oscar forward to get him out of what lando dubs as the ‘y/n l/n induced lovesick daze’.
a reporter who’d seen the entire interaction couldn’t help but laugh as she said; “y/n truly is quite a sight, isn’t she?”
oscar didn’t think his cheeks could get anymore red as he nodded. “she always has been the most beautiful girl.”
lando playfully rolled his eyes as he and oscar continued on. if he was being honest with himself, even he is getting tired with the constant pining between you and oscar. the boy could scream at the top of his lungs how in love he is with you and you’d still think it’s all platonic. this entire thing was getting a bit too pitiful for both of your friends to watch.
which is why charles and lando have taken it upon themselves to finally force you to see what’s right in front of you. oscar loved you too much to even think about putting you in any form of uncomfortable situation even if it comes at his own expense, thankfully for lando and charles, they don’t share the same sentiment and so the two got to planning.
it was simple enough really. lando grabbed oscar by his collar, dragging him all over the paddock towards the ferrari motorhome.
“lando,” oscar whined behind him. “what the fuck are you doing?”
“trust me, mate, this is for your own good,” said his teammate, ignoring all the cameras that had gathered around them, following along.
“can’t you at least let me walk on my own?” oscar complained again, hunched over as lando quite literally dragged him by his mclaren shirt’s collar.
lando shook his head. “nope. i legitimately cannot handle this not going the way it’s meant to again.”
in the distance, both mclaren boys heard you voice your complaints to charles as your teammate held you on the shoulder to keep you in place, a group of mechanics and engineers huddle around the two of you, watching in curiosity,
finally, lando let go of oscar, allowing him to stand properly as the younger boy threw a glare at him while fixing his shirt. then he found himself face to face with you, confusion all over your face as it finally dawned on him what this is all about.
“oscar?” you asked, looking between him and lando along with the group that had accumulated on their way to ferrari. “what are you all doing here?”
lando and charles folded their arms over their chest as charles motioned towards the two of you. “we figured the only way for you to finally get it is if there’s an audience.”
“get what?” you asked again and oscar, palms already sweating in front of you and looking as though he’d rather get struck by lightning awkwardly cleared his throat.
“well get on to it, oscar,” lando says though his accent makes oscar’s name sound like oscah and oscar almost wanted to punch him there and then.
again, oscar awkwardly cleared his throat as you finally face him. “y/n, i have to tell you something.”
you motioned for him to continue. “okay. what is it, osc?”
“i don’t know how else to tell you this without being upfront about it so—”
“what’s going on here?” and at the moment, fred vasseur stepped into the scene, confusion all over his face as he found practically half the paddock inside his motorhome, all of them crowding around you and oscar.
everyone groaned, charles threw his hands up in frustration and lando wanted to bang his head against the table. “fred, you’re my boss, but please stop talking.”
fred was just about to say something else when charles physically dragged him to his side to shut him up.
you turned back to oscar, encouraging him to keep talking even though you would have preferred more privacy.
“i like you a lot,” he finally blurts out. “ever since f3. no, way before that. ever since karting.”
you smile at him kindly. “i like you too, oscar. i told you, you’re one of my best friends—”
every one groaned, cutting you off and oscar shook his head.
“no, y/n. you don’t get it. i don’t just like you. i’m very much in love with you,” he emphasized, remembering logan’s words about wording it properly as he took her hand in his shaky ones. “like…i want to spend my life with you kind of in love with you.”
you eyes widened in surprise and a part of oscar had thought that maybe you were just in complete denial the entire time but he realized now that you truly, absolutely had no idea about his feelings. he doesn’t know which one is worse if he’s being honest with himself.
“well, why didn’t you tell me, osc?” you ask gently.
“love,” he starts softly, the nickname effortlessly rolling off his tongue. “i can’t count anymore how many times i’ve told you and how many times i’ve tried to tell you and how many times i tried to show you.”
“i never noticed.” for a moment, you seem completely dumbfounded and he couldn’t help the laugh that escaped his lips at the adorable way your mouth parted in surprised. you’re adorable, beautiful, gorgeous and every other adjective even if you unintentionally made his life hell the past few years.
“that’s alright,” he reassures you.
you couldn’t help but smile shyly at him as you squeezed his hand. “well, if it makes a difference, i’m very much in love with you as well. like…i want to spend the rest of my life with you kind of in love.”
at that, he laughed again, pulling you towards him as your lips crashed together.
and everyone fucking cheered at that.

literally not a single soul asked
but, i'm going to share anyway. here are my favorite reads this year in no particular order:
Fiction - Novels
Fyodor Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" (Honestly, a masterpiece. I can't wait to devour his entire library. Read it. No notes.)
Leo Tolstoy's "Ana Karenina" (If you're looking for your next existential crisis, here ya go.)
Donna Tartt's "The Secret History" (I know I'm super late reading this and the whole world has already been in love with it for ages, now I finally know why.)
Bram Stoker's "Dracula" (In all fairness, this is on my list every year).
Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein" (This is also always on my list, idec. Shelly's monster may teach you a bit about being human.)
Stephen's Fry's "Mythos" (Honestly, just a super fun read. Really good starting point if you're a budding Hellenic or into ancient Greek mythology, in my opinion. As long as you take it as a starting off point for further research and understand that he has put it together to be entertaining.)
Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights" (You will never love a book so much where 97% of the characters and their actions are entirely insufferable. You might wonder why you began, but won't be able to stop and will be grateful that you didn't. Handsomely and meticulously written, as well.)
Elizabeth Kostova's "The Historian" (Historians, anthropologists, romance, and vampires. Chef's kiss.)
Madeline Miller's "Circe" (I JUST LOVE IT OKAY)
Anne Rice's "Interview with the Vampire" (I will never take criticism about this book. No notes, lmao.)
Fiction - Novellas
H.P. Lovecraft's "The Dunwitch Horror"
H.P. Lovecraft's "The Lost City"
H.P. Lovecraft's "The Festival"
Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla"
Aristophanes' "Lysistrata" (Every moment of this will have you saying what the actual fuck lmao)
Non-Fiction
Viktor Frankl's "A Man's Search For Meaning" (Just saying, this is written by a Holocaust survivor who is also a psychologist. There are graphic depictions of his sufferings. Major trigger warnings and all that - but, I still highly recommend as this is a really life changing book. His message and eloquence touched me in an indescribable way.)
Walter Burkett's "Greek Religion: Archaic and Classical" (Really, I recommend this as required reading to all Hellenics and those interested in ancient Greek religion.)
Dorsey Armstrong's audiobook, "Medieval Myths & Mysteries"
Lacy Collison-Morley's "Greek and Roman Ghost Stories"
Anne Baring and Jules Cashford's "Myth of the Goddess: An Evolution of an Image"
Estelle B. Freedman's "The Essential Feminist Reader"
Alexandra Kollontai's "The Autobiography of a Sexually Emancipated Communist Woman"
Bernadotte Perrin's Translation of Plutarch's "The Parallel Lives" (Juicy Roman drama).
Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations"
Robert Graves' Translation of Suetonius' "The 12 Caesars" (Juicy Roman tea, with a hint of bias though)

""My dream is some day to marry Alix H. I have loved her a long while and still deeper and stronger since 1889 when she spent six weeks in St. Petersburg. For a long time, I resisted my feeling that my dearest dream will come true."
When Nicholas made this entry in his diary in 1892, he had not yet established his temporary little household with Kschessinska. He was discouraged about the prospects of his interest in Princess Alix. Russian society did not share Nicholas's rapture for this German girl with red-gold hair. Mix had made a bad impression during her visits to her sister Grand Duchess Elizabeth in the Russian capital. Badly dressed, clumsy, an awkward dancer, atrocious French accent, a schoolgirl blush, too shy, too nervous, too arrogant—these were some of the unkind things St. Petersburg said about Alix of Hesse. Society sniped openly at Princess Mix, safe in the knowledge that Tsar Alexander III and Empress Marie, both vigorously anti-German, had no intention of permitting a match with the Tsarevich. Although Princess Alix was his godchild, it was generally known that Alexander III was angling for a bigger catch for his son, someone like Princess Helene, the tall, dark-haired daughter of the Pretender to the throne of France, the Comte de Paris. Although a republic, France was Russia's ally, and Alexander III suspected that a link between the Romanov dynasty and the deposed House of Bourbon would strengthen the alliance in the hearts of the French people. But the approach to Helene did not please Nicholas. "Mama made a few allusions to Helene, daughter of the Comte de Paris," he wrote in his diary. "I myself want to go in one direction and it is evident that Mama wants me to choose the other one." Helene also resisted. She was not at all willing to give up her Roman Catholicism for the Orthodox faith required of a future Russian empress. Frustrated, the Tsar next sent emissaries to Princess Margaret of Prussia. Nicholas flatly declared that he would rather become a monk than marry the plain and bony Margaret. Margaret spared him, however, by announcing that she, too, was unwilling to abandon Protestantism for Orthodoxy. Through it all, Nicholas nurtured his hope that someday he would marry Alix. Before leaving for the Far East, he wrote in his diary, "Oh, Lord, how I want to go to llinskoe [Ella's country house, where Alix was visiting] … otherwise if I do not see her now, I shall have to wait a whole year and that will be hard." His parents continued to discourage his ardor. Alix, they said, would never change her religion in order to marry him. Nicholas asked permission only to see her and propose. If Alix were denied him, he stated, he would never marry. As long as he was well, Alexander III ignored his son's demands. In the winter of 1894, however, the Tsar caught influenza and began having trouble with his kidneys. As his vitality began to ebb alarmingly, Alexander began to consider how Russia would manage without him. Nothing could be done immediately about the Tsarevich's lack of experience, but Alexander III decided that he could at least provide his heir with the stabilizing effect of marriage. As Princess Alix was the only girl whom Nicholas would even remotely consider, Alexander III and Marie reluctantly agreed that he should be allowed to propose. For Nicholas, it was a great personal victory. For the first time in his life he had overcome every obstacle, pushed aside all objections, defeated his overpowering father and had his way."

If Spookies feels like two different movies, it’s because it’s one of those nightmare productions where the “making of” story might be more interesting than the movie itself. Yes, too many cooks spoil the broth and Spookies is solid evidence that too many filmmakers ruin the movie. With production being shanghaied near the beginning of post-production work and half the film reshot, Grue Believers will never know if the original crew’s vision would’ve made a better movie. Throw in some top makeup and effects people early in their careers and the Grue Crew have plenty to fuel their talkabout of this fun, mess of a movie.
At the time of this writing, Spookies is available to stream from Tubi, Shudder, ScreamBox, and AMC+, and on physical media in Blu-ray format in a 2-disc set from Vinegar Syndrome.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film chosen by Jeff, will be Just Before Dawn (1981), an underappreciated slasher from co-writer/director Jeff Lieberman (Squirm, 1976; Blue SunshineI, 1977) and starring George Kennedy, Chris Lemmon, Deborah Benson, Greg Henry, and Mike Kellin.
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans – so leave them a message or comment on the Gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the Gruesome Magazine website, or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at [email protected].

This is a kinf of odd request but... could you recommend books where the hero has been accused/rumored/said to have killed someone? It doesn't matter if he actually did or not
Not an odd request at all! I love it. "It doesn't matter if he actually did or not" lmao love
The Devil in Her Bed by Lorraine Heath has the heroine approach the hero precisely because he's a suspected murder (not that he'll face consequences Because Earl) and she wants someone taken out lmao
I have not yet read On a Wild Night by Stephanie Laurens (I'm getting through the series to do so) but I know that the hero is suspected of killing someone
and because the heroine is certifiable she's like 👁 👄 👁 what about it. A friend of mine whose opinion I totally trust read and liveblogged it to me, it sounds amazing and I can't wait to read it.
No Good Duke Goes Unpunished by Sarah MacLean has the hero kinda framed for murder by the heroine lmao? She faked her death and everyone thought he did it, and when he finds her he's PISSED.
The Leopard Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt eventually has the hero accused of murder, I think.
Ravished by Amanda Quick has a hero that people think killed someone lol.
Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale has an assassin hero who has killed people and does kill more people on the page. Without remorse. It's amazing. TW: noncon in the first encounter.
The Duke Who Knew Too Much by Grace Callaway has a hero who is accused of murder after a) his first wife died and it looked kinda bad and b) his mistress dies after the heroine overhears them discussing some CNC stuff. So after the mistress dies he has to take heroine to a club and be like "LOOK I'M JUST A LITTLE FREAKY". M is for Marquess in that series has a spy hero who has killed people in the past. The hero of Glory and The Master of Shadows has killed and will kill again lol. It's part of his big vengeance plot.
Accidentally Compromising the Duke by Stacy Reid has a hero who I believe was rumored to have killed his first wife.
The Truth About Cads and Dukes by Elisa Braden has a hero who has in fact killed someone in a duel (and it was the brother of the hero of the previous book, I think, which is why the families have beef). He did it like he did everything else--efficiently. (Hot.) Confessions of a Dangerous Lord has a spy hero who's killed people before, I believe.
All of the heroes in Monica McCarty's Highland Guard series have killed and will kill again because they're a part of Robert the Bruce's ELITE HIGHLAND WARRIORS. Special shoutout to The Viper, where I think people believe the hero killed his first wife.
Jennifer Ashley does this. Like, every MacKenzie brother (except Mac, I think) is accused of murder at some point, especially in The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie, where Ian (the hero) and his older brother Hart (future hero, love of my life) are both accused of murder and Ian is like "I didn't do it but I'm not going to say anything to clear my name because Hart... maybe did it" and Hart is like "LMAO WHAT ABOUT IT. WHAT'RE YOU GONNA DO. FOR REAL. WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO OFFICER." which. God. In The Many Sins of Lord Cameron MacKenzie the hero is rumored to have killed his first wife, a classic.
In Which Matilda Halifax Learns the Value of Restraint by Alexandra Vasti has another hero who's suspected of murder and he's like "no... I just have... things I like to do........"
The Perils of Pleasure by Julie Anne Long has a hero who's been accused of murder and is literally about to swing from the gallows when the heroine saves his life, not because she believes in him but because she's been paid to. Then they go on the run and it's a romcom!
Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt has an absolutely loony tunes bonkers hero who has killed and will kill again, LOVES a murder.
In The Duke Gets Desperate by Diana Quincy, the hero is kind of suspected of murder for inheritance. And the hero brings it up and he's like "hurtful" lmao.
For more contemporary things, every. single. hero in Mila Finelli's Kings of Italy series has killed, will kill, and does kill on the page. With relish.
King's Captive by Amber Bardan has a hero who does murder in front of the heroine in like. The prologue. He kills her dad lmao.

Alexandra Nunez, 37 (USA 2010)
Tumblr media
Alexandra Nunez was a single mother who was pregnant for the fifth time. According to her family, she didn’t believe in abortion and told them that she was going to an appointment to have a cyst removed. She may have been desperate and ashamed or possibly coerced by the baby’s father. Either way, she underwent something advertised as safe and paid for it with her life.
Alexandra’s children waited for her, unaware that she was dying. 19-year-old Daisy made lunch and then dinner, wondering when her mother would come back. She never did.
Alexandra went to the A1 abortion facility in Jackson Heights in January of 2010. The abortionist severed one of her arteries and she rapidly lost copious amounts of blood. She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Eventually the medical board concluded that the abortionist responsible for Alexandra’s death was Robert F. Hosty, who had no hospital affiliation and hadn’t taken any continuing medical education training since 2004.
When Alexandra’s death was investigated, the abortion facility claimed that “Nothing happened here” because even though she was killed there, she was pronounced dead at the hospital and not on the facility’s property. That didn’t change the fact that A1 killed Alexandra and her youngest child.

Have you read any books about The Romanovs, and do you have any recommendations?
hi there!
I’ve read quite a few Romanov-related books and own quite a few more that are currently sitting waiting to be read.
Therefore, I’m going to just list my favourites - the books that I thought were the most enjoyable, had the best information, and really stood out to me.
Tumblr media
Nicholas and Alexandra - Robert K. Massie
This probably THE book to start with. It’s fantastic, Massie was a genius when it came to writing! There are one or two inaccuracies, but that’s due to it being published a few decades ago, rather than Massie’s lack of due diligence. There’s a chapter on OTMA if I remember correctly, and a lot of writing about Alexei and his haemophilia. Massie’s son had haemophilia, so he has a really interesting perspective!
The Romanovs: The Last Chapter - Robert K. Massie
A quite science-y look at the discovery of the Romanov’s remains and the science and controversy that followed it. It also includes a section on Anna Anderson, which I didn’t plan on reading, but Massie had such a wonderful writing style that I ended up finishing it! Definitely not a necessity, but provides a very fascinating look into the science and politics surrounding the Romanovs.
The Last of the Tsars - Robert Service
Quite politically heavy, but I wanted to include it as there is quite a lot of info about Tobolsk. Not my favourite, but worth an honourable mention :)
Thirteen Years at the Russian Court - Pierre Gilliard
A must, in my opinion. There are many good books by people who knew the Romanovs, but this one is the best in my view. Gilliard provides lots of detail, fun anecdotes, and an unrivalled look into the dynamics in the family. He was also a skilled writer; the book kept me engaged throughout, which some other contemporary accounts are less successful at!
25 Chapters of my Life - Olga Alexandrovna
A good book if you want to know more about the upbringing of Tsar Alexander III’s children. Her childhood memoirs are very sweet to read and gave me a fresh perspective. She doesn’t write too extensively on OTMA and barely anything about Alexei, but her relationship with her nieces is touched on. Very interesting to see how the Revolution played out as she saw it, and to see the love story between her and Kulikovsky.
A Lifelong Passion, Sergei Mironenko, Andrei Maylunas
A truly fantastic book containing hundreds of letters and diary entries from various Romanov family members.
Romanov Autumn - Charlotte Zeepvat
I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. The biographies of Sergei Alexandrovich and Konstantin Konstantinovich were refreshingly detailed!
Anything written and translated by Helen Azar!!
Her books are mainly translations of OTMA’s diaries and letters, and they are invaluable. Azar often writes little biographies at the start of her books and these are short and sweet overviews of each Grand Duchess’s life, with just enough detail to get a good impression of each of their personalities.
Most of these books you can get quite cheaply second hand. I buy almost all of my Romanov books from second hand websites like World of Books. I got A Lifelong Passion, which is nearly 700 pages, for £3.70 (around 4.50 dollars, 4 euros)!!
I haven’t included some of the more recent mainstream popular Romanov books as I simply did not like them - a LOT of them have a big issue with not citing their sources and regurgitating old rumours that have been debunked which really bothers me! Maybe I'll make a separate post about those some day soon...?

Tumblr media
✩‧ ✩‧ ✩‧ ✩‧ ✩‧ ✩‧ ✩‧ ✩‧ ✩‧ ✩‧
Bob Velseb - Purple to represent fear, They met when she was running away from him-- She was trying not to die after all. The two re-met on valentines day, you can imagine what happened from there. (Their relationship: Currently dating.) (ACCS OF THIS CHARACTER: @youbringtrouble)
Lila - Yellow to represent happy; The two met when Alex was out shopping for halloween costumes and she saw Lila looking at little skeleton costumes, Alex recommended some makeup brands that would blend with the costumes colors well. (Their relationship: Unsure, friendly strangers?) Roy, Ross and Robert - Orange or White to represent semi-happiness and politeness; Alex was waiting for Kevin as usual at the candy shop, It wasn't busy so she stood behind the counter to make sure no one would come in and steal while Kevin was helping his co-worker supply the candy boxes in the back, The three teenage boys entered the shop, Alex basically did Kevin's job for him-- She gave the boys the candy, All three of them were polite and paid, surprisingly-- She liked them 7.75/10 interaction. (Their relationship: Friendly strangers/ friend-ish?, She would 100% be the one to hold Kevin back from hitting them) Skid and Pump - Yellow to represent happy 100%; Alex adores these kids! She has a series of jobs, Modeling is her main, Acting in smaller musicals that aren't on broadway and teaching/tutoring. She tutors Pump on Sundays, Sometimes Skid will come over and try to help his friend instead of waiting for him. (Their relationship: Teacher/Student) Everyone that works in police - purple to represent fear; She was still shaking and nervous from Bob Velseb chasing her, She hid in there for a while, She didn't tell the police that she was being chased but she was comforted, calmed down and sent home. (Their relationship: Strangers???) Jaune - Orange to represent semi-happiness; Met her in high school, they are friends. (Their relationship: Friends)
