“I do hate to see squandered potential. You understand. Your ex-employer, Mr. Afton, had neglected to inform you of… well, everything that was important. Things you should have known before you were sent to act independently, as much as you could have, anyway… given your particular… predicament.” He walked around her. Slowly, and almost gracefully, taking careful steps and speaking as if he was disappointed, though also a bit amused. “In spite of your lack of general, er- information, however… you have performed spectacularly.” He stopped right before her, holding his hands in front of himself like one would do when saying a prayer. “Such performance warrants… reward.”

She didn’t wait for him to continue. Her mind went to the one thing she’d wanted since the start. Above his promises and certainties about her future, above her own goals, small as they were. She’d never forgotten why she’d started this in the first place. Ever since her “birth”, the sole purpose for pushing so far…

“I want-” She couldn’t get three words out before the other’s expression turned pitying.

“-I apologize, Miss Vanny, but I cannot bring your mother back.”

She felt like screaming. Like she would rip her hair off and claw her eyes out the next second.

Finally, after the hell she’d endured for almost two years, she’d found someone who could have helped her. Saved the remainders of her mental well-being. Saved…

Because despite those memories not belonging to her, she had them all the same. Vanny remembered the lies she had told at the pressure of her old man- the betrayed look on her mother’s face as she lost the court battle. And later, the police coming to inform them of what had happened. It was all there, always. The guilt, first and foremost, followed by the determination. The pain too. Not just Vanessa’s.

And just as hope had begun to shine her way, there was nothing. Again. As it had been with Afton. A possibility of peace ripped out of her grasp.

She supposed she did not deserve it after all the lives she’d cut short.

She didn’t know why she kept going. Why she put herself through this hell instead of trying her hardest to fight back. There was nothing left to lose, after all. Nothing to be threatened with. Vanessa had had her life striped of any source of joy long ago, and with her… so had Vanny’s.

“Do not look so downcast, my dear. There is something else I can offer… Something that I know you would find of… equal value.”

“Yeah? What’s that?” She barked back, venom dripping from her tone. She was tired of everyone’s bullshit.

The Shadow Freddy tipped his head forward, dots of light gleaming brighter in the darkness that surrounded most of his form. She didn’t have to see him smile to know he had done so.

“Agency.”

The void enveloped him once again, and in his place a spotlight shined, illuminating a round wooden table with a VR headset on top.

“Put on the headset, Miss Vanny. Put it on and… face your reflection.”

'all the stars and teeth' by adalyn grace, spoiler free review

disclaimer; i think it's important for me to say that i stopped reading the book by the last 100 pages meaning i got about 70% through and stopped. this blog is for impatient readers (like me), so ima just be transparent.

all the stars and teeth (atsat) is a fantasy, romance, adventure novel written by adalyn grace and released in 2020. it's the first installment the duology with the second installment, all the tides of fate, being released in 2021.

first and foremost, i will give this novel a 3.5/5 based off what i read. in short, it was lukewarm. there were some things i really enjoyed and could get by, and there were others that were detrimental to the plot and over all enjoyability of the book. in the end, the cons outweighed the pros and i could no longer get myself to read the book.

characters (3/5)

the main character: amora is a teenage girl who just went through some serious trauma so it's understandable why she's kind of... unlikable? the whole book is told from her perspective so if you don't vibe with her that much, it can make reading it kind of a chore. amora is a very boring protagonist. she's supposed to be super altruistic and girlboss and care about her people/kingdom a lot to the point where she does some dumb shit just for "her kingdom". she's not very relatable, she doesn't have many emotions like she's pretty stoic which also makes her kind of boring imo. she's super mean to her arranged marriage fiance, ferrick. it gets to a point where she basically hates him and like doesn't care about his safety?? at all? even though he's not even bad she just doesn't like that he's in love with her. anyway, yeah i just don't really care for her.

love interest: bastian is the main love interest and he's also kind of a second lead i guess. he's a pirate with a deep dark secret that wants to help amora on her journey. hes charming, playful, kinda full of himself, mischievous, and hot. he's a lot more interesting than amora. i find this happens sometimes with ya novels aimed for teen girls: the male lead is usually more intriguing and fun than the female lead which i guess is because girls are supposed to put themselves into the main character's shoes and fall in love with the ml. i think he's a decent character, but not the typical swoon-worthy type.

side characters: ferrick and the mermaid chick(i can't remember her name at all) are the two side characters. these two are honestly great and i found them a lot more likable as people than the leads.

setting (4/5)

the best part of the book is the setting. you follow the crew on this ship and go to different magical islands on a magical boat. it's pretty cool and enjoyable.

story/lore (3/5)

it's a very typical 'i need to save my kingdom' type story, nothing you haven't seen done before. the plot can be confusing and hard to keep up with. the magic amora uses is also confusing and i didn't understand it. i had to keep referencing the beginning to remember, but maybe that's just me. i think the plot could have been more clear and simple? i just had a hard time keeping up with the story and understanding the characters' motivations. the romance side plot is decent, but as a romance LOVERRRR it didn't satisfy my needs.

verdict

this book was fun and exciting when i first started it. it's a pretty good book debut for adalyn grace. if you like fantasy adventure, pirates, and the sea, i recommend trying it out. but it isn't anything crazy worthwhile or different. if you're the impatient type like me, it could be a hit or miss. there's also a sequel, so keep that in mind.

i actually read this while i was waiting for belladonna to be available in my local library, and now i finally have it so i'm probably gonna be reviewing that real soon :)

I feel like I read a different book than everyone else. There are so many glowing reviews about this book, which is fine, I'm glad people are enjoying it because this book did not hit any marks for me. I'm just surprised because this honestly felt like a step down from her first series, All The Stars and Teeth. I read AtSaT and while I labeled it generic, it was very vividly descriptive and the pacing was good. While I didn't care enough to read its sequel, I looked forward to Belladonna because growth of writing, a character who sees spirits and Death itself, and a murder mystery.

Needless to say, I'm kind of disappointed.

The book starts off pretty well and I liked it up until Signa gets picked up to go to Thorn Grove manor. After that, it gets pretty boring and the pacing drags a lot. It yo-yos between Signa thirsting for every available man in her vicinity except those she's related to, trying to piece together a whodunit/who is still poisoning Blythe, her social debut and trying to be a lady, and Death and her apparent powers. It would be FINE if we could actually focus on bits for longer sections than a chapter here or there. Don't worry, Signa's thirsting takes the majority role.

The story is also entirely boring because it's incredibly easy to figure out several plot twists, within the first 15% of the book. I picked two suspects on the whodunit and I guessed correctly on the individual involved. There's no tension or worrying because by the time it starts getting serious you've either figured it out, and Signa's got the trump card of Death literally doing anything she asks including saving someone from dying.

There were also parts of the book that just felt... that just felt like I was being treated like I'm stupid? I don't know how else to explain it. When someone asks if Signa had been shown about the tunnels and like, she got there yesterday late in the day at a party who would have shown her?? When Signa was like "who could be up in the living quarters when there's a party around??" when she knows damn well there's a sick cousin. When she asks to find the grave of Lillian to Sylas.... after she was in the garden where the grave of Lillian was, and it's stated where she's buried plainly, and that's when they decide to solve Lillian's murder. There's other parts like that, and I don't know how to describe it but it's just like when you want to bash your head against something.

I didn't like Signa. I found her mostly annoying but I think that was just myself annoyed for a whole day. I do think she had way too many eye rolls for a MC for me to like her any. But mostly, I didn't like any of the characters. I found them mostly to be rude half the time. The only character I started to like was Blythe because she was really going through it. Charlotte was like the only nice character at all times but she was so bland at the same time.

How did Signa get her powers? How did she become something that doesn't die? We aren't told and that isn't even something that really gets touched on. These powers that she has? She has these "lessons" with Death to teach her and like... they don't actually DO anything???? The first lesson he literally just helps her get to her room and let her feel the power she's capable of. The second lesson is like Death touching her and making out???? Near the end, she eats a bunch of poisonous berries to get her close to the Veil and then she suddenly can use these powers that we do not get to see her practice on.

Let's talk about the biggest problem though. Death. Death and Signa. This is clearly supposed to be a romance between them two, an enemies to lovers but they were really never enemies she just hated him. But Death was obsessed with her since she was a BABY at two months old. 😭 He pretty much stalked her/watched her her whole life. Like um???? Also, it just FEELS like grooming in some parts. There's just some stuff he says that sounds so much like grooming that it ICKS me out.

Also, Death is very much "you can't play God, you can't decide who lives or dies" but he hints at doing the most to get her away from people AND he literally kills someone else to save someone from dying because Signa wants that. And also kills for her. Anyway, when Signa does that choice, Death eventually tells her he chose some 80 year old man instead who would have lived to 90 but he would have ached. Like UGH, give us actual damn consequences? She should have had to take the life maybe. It should have been someone young or someone she knew to know that that choice shouldn't be EASY. Also, she let's Death kill Percy to give Blythe his time, which okay I'm fine but like... doesn't that go against what Death has been preaching?

The ending goes on for too long. I get that she kind of wants to let you know there's another book. After we get the explanations of the murders and why people are acting certain ways and doing certain hurtful things and why SPOILER (men) will do the absolute bonkers shit/treat people terribly instead of talking normally about emotions lol which is the most accurate thing about this.

Again, the book isn't bad, per se but it isn't for me.

Aww, that’s so sweet of you! Thanks for asking, I’m okay for the most part, and I hope you are doing well too! Just trying to get past this recent block, but I’m confident that once I get the next chapter out I’ll have an easier time. I think the problem is that I’ve planned to stuff chapter 22 with so many things, descriptions and scenes that when I get down to write it my mind is almost intimidated by the task, but I have managed to do some good progress on it. Right now it’s sitting at around 15k words but I suspect it’ll pass 20k by the end. Hehe, I guess I shouldn’t say that if I don’t want to be even more intimidated XD.

Have you seen the covers for House of Salt & Sorrow, Crown of Pearl & Coral, and All the Stars & Teeth? I'm curious about your thoughts on this style since imo they look super same (it could just be the nautical theme and title "Noun of/the Noun and Noun"). [also this is @starksinthenorth but I'm too lazy to log in rn]

So. So.

While these covers all have the same sort of “swirly stacked title” format they’re part of the much larger family of designs that is literally just fancy, vertically stacked title with frilly background framing. Technically even King of Scars and Rule of Wolves fall into this category.

Of the three, I’d say HoSaS has the best-executed design. It actually looks like bronze or brass that was corroded and oxidized by seawater, and the colors are nicely balanced. Kind of a shame that everyone I know who’s read it thinks it was kinda meh. Also 99% certain it uses the Desire font, but it does a pretty good job of making it unique.

AtSaT is... well I’ve already talked about it so you can go dig through my archives for it, I won’t repeat myself. Suffice to say, deeply meh.

CoCaP is interesting. Not like, the design itself, which frankly bores me to tears, but because of how much it aesthetically resembles a different cover that I CANNOT remember the name of dear god help. I think I’m thinking of the Three Dark Crowns cover but that’s not really that similar so idk. It’s also really blah.

Anyway I’ll give these HoSaS a 7.5/10 for being pretty but a bit Too Much, and CoPaP gets a 6/10 mostly for actually having a crown made of coral and pearls on the cover. Except it’s ugly and also looks extremely fake.

Hot take: the only reason atsat/ada lyn gra ce has gotten this much buzz is bc she’s using t Adeyem i as a stepping stool (literally ALL get your stops are with adeyemi and she’s milking it)

i’m not gonna lie, when i saw she’d hit the list (at number 2, no less!) i was shocked. it’ll be interesting to see if she hits the USA Today list bc that’s actually curated via sales, unlike the NYT.
