[SUBMISSION FIC] changing tides. (childe x gn.reader)

summary: up until a short while ago, it seemed that you hated childe, just like a lot of people do. but now? now that doesn’t quite seem the case anymore. and childe doesn’t necessarily know what to make of it.

potential warnings: enemies to lovers (? if that’s really not your thing, though this is firmly in the “to lovers” range)

something’s bothering childe about your closeness, and he hates that he just can’t seem to mask it as well as he can with others. for some time now, the two of you have been at this back-and-forth sort of rivalry, where he teases and pokes and pushes, and you snarl at him to quit the shit unless he wants to get his lights knocked out. he’s certain you just hate him, and there’s something to that that just thrills him. hell, even when the two of you fight physically, trading blows in a spar that started just because he got on your nerves just a little too much, he’s still grinning the whole time. to an extent, he’s used to your hatred, maybe even revels in it, and there’s something with you that he just can’t keep away from. but even when he teases, he doesn’t get the same response back anymore. scathing glares and sneers have been handed in for only narrowed glances and pursed lips - loathing for just annoyance. even then, it feels off-kilter in a way. surely you’re not just… getting bored of him, are you? it troubles him. and that troubled feeling is precisely how he finds himself here.

he’s invited himself over to your house once more, barging in without knocking even, but not once do you demand to know why he’s found fit to enter without asking. he’s louder than normal as he drapes himself across the back of the couch as dramatically as possible, turning that obnoxiousness dial of his as high as it can go, all in hopes that you’ll try to kick him out or grab your blade and demand he meet you outside… but there’s nothing. you glance at him out of the corner of your eye, you snicker and groan at his antics and wave him off with a dismissive shake of your head, but he just can’t get to you like he used to. with a huff, he plops down heavily in the chair next to yours in your living room while you take care of some papers for work. again, you send him that sideways glance and a raised eyebrow, and he waits for even a vaguely scathing comment. he hears you hum, amused (amused???), but you make no other comment as your gaze returns to your paperwork. he has to try so hard not to visibly roll his eyes, and settles instead for propping his chin up onto his palm and giving a long, drawn-out sigh as he pouts in the direction of your living room window. then, finally, he hears you sigh in turn and put both pen and paper down, and he has to fight back a smile when he sees you turn to him out of the corner of his eye. you lean in close, and he waits for his long-overdue reprimand. but no. even still, even now, you just stare at him, eyes narrowed as you lean forward. he glances your way too, nonchalant (though perhaps not entirely), and he hopes you can see that challenging glint in his eye, that you’ll rise up to it. you frown, and give a quiet huff. “okay, fine,” you tell him, almost exasperated, “I’ll bite. what’s wrong, childe?” he shrugs, moving his gaze to stare out the window once more as he gives his own dismissive sigh. “nothing,” he says simply, and this time doesn’t stop the shit-eating grin from creeping across his face. he hopes it bugs you. “nothing at all.” you purse your lips again, and lean ever closer, until you’re sitting on the edge of your own seat. you reach out to him, and he, like the fool he is, gets his hopes up for but a moment before you subvert all his expectations and grab his hand instead. carefully, you pry it out from under where his chin was resting, forcing him (intentionally or not) to sit up straight again and you clutch his palm in both of yours. your grip is tight, insistent, but it doesn’t hurt. it’s an odd feeling coming from someone like you, and he doesn’t know quite what to make of it. the thought makes something churn in his stomach. “you can be a real awful liar sometimes, you know that?” you tell him; there’s a teasing edge to your voice, but it doesn’t cut into him, doesn’t do damage in the way he wants it to. he pouts again, and you frown right back. “see, there it is again. something is wrong.” he gives a short huff, and turns his gaze even further from you. “it’s… fine. really, it’s nothing,” he responds, deadpan. it’ll *have* to be fine, since you’re clearly no longer interested in him in the way you used to be. that’s fine. but then, you surprise him again - gently, even uncharacteristically so, your hand comes up to cup his cheek. childe almost flinches at the softness and genuine emotion behind the action, so thoroughly unused to the feeling of it (especially from you), but he holds it back as he turns his gaze back to stare at you, eyes carefully neutral. you frown then, and shift from your position in next him with a low, disappointed hum. his own eyebrows raise ever so slightly as you lean forward out of your seat and swing a leg over onto his lap so that you’re straddling him (still gently, he notes with some degree of frustration). your other hand, now letting go of where it held his, comes up to match its other, dragging fingers softly, sweetly, up the side of his neck til it meets the other cheek too. you tilt your head a few degrees the other way as you scrutinise him. “baby,” you murmur then, almost pleading, brow scrunched ever so slightly in what *has* to be concern. “ajax, sweetheart, talk to me.” he has to shut his eyes then as some new emotion washes over him like the tide onto the shore. he feels your thumb sweep over his cheekbone, and try as he might he can’t help but to lean into it with a quietly resigned sigh. it feels… nice. comforting. genuine. the last one twists his lungs ever more. “thought you said you hated me, hm?” he says in a low voice, unwilling to disturb the energy in the room with anything more playful like he’d normally say. he hopes the lump in his throat isn’t as audible as he thinks it is. “I seem to remember you making all of that quite clear to me before.” he can almost hear your eyes narrow and your forehead scrunch in confusion, though he’s still not opening his eyes to check (the one time he’ll indulge in cowardice). but soon enough, you sigh, and squeeze his face ever so slightly. “…not for a while now, though.” you pause. “and in any case, weren’t you supposed to be the observant one? thought you’d have noticed by now anyway.” he raises a single eyebrow at that, and opens one eye to catch a glimpse of your expression. your eyes are narrowed, still in concern (he thinks, though hopes not), but he can still see that spark of amusement twinkling deeper. your smile is small, soft, teasing as it pulls back even further watching him. he opens both his eyes then, rolling them as he sighs dramatically (pushing away that discomfort, that writhing feeling in his stomach, anything to get back to normal). he even brings the back of a hand to his forehead as he all but wails, “what a shame! and here I thought I found someone worthy of a strong rivalry with yours truly! what a shame that I really can conquer them all.” he sighs again, trading that neutral look for his signature grin. (what a shame that you’ve already conquered him so wholly.) you roll your eyes in turn, still not letting go of his face at all as you lean in closer. that amused spark grows brighter. “conquered? oh honey–” (that word again, normally dripping with contempt, oozes nothing but teasing love, and his stomach flips again) “–if you think even for a moment that just because I like you as much as I do you’ve won anything by default, then maybe you haven’t been paying attention.” childe opens his mouth to respond, another lighthearted quip on the tip of his tongue, but suddenly you react, eyes shooting wide as your hold on his face tenses so briefly. “wait, no, stop that! you’re dodging my question!” your eyes narrow again, back to concern and careful analysis. one hand lifts from his cheek and comes to rest against his shoulder. “what’s wrong, really? you’re so out of it, I’ve never seen you this uncomfortable.” (damn, he thought he’d been hiding it well enough.) “is it something I’ve done?” “no!” he blurts out, hating how quick the response is and how he can feel his face heat up at realising that. “i– no, just… I guess I didn’t expect such a… positive reaction to me bugging you as much as I’ve been trying to,” he finally confesses as he moves his gaze to the wall next to the both of you. it could use with some decorating, he thinks. “least of all from you, maybe.” the last part is much quieter, so much that even he has to almost strain to hear it. you hum in lieu of a response. instead, you lean in closer, yet closer, until your lips find his own. it’s slow, so slow he might have mistaken it once for hesitation if he didn’t know you any better, but when he tries to push back into the touch, you pull away just as much; your hands, on his face and his shoulder, press back and insist he stay put. you can’t stop his hands from dragging up along your thighs, however, to the edge of your hips, gripping just below the waist and squeezing where he can; he needs to ground himself, against this wave, this tsunami, of conflicting emotion. you pull away completely then, eyes lidded not with desire or annoyance like he’s used to seeing, but something else. “listen,” you implore, voice low and honeyed, “I didn’t particularly enjoy the realisation I genuinely liked you either. really, I mean it, you bastard!” you swat his arm when he chuckles at you. “but I love you. celestia knows I love you. I’ll not shy away from that, unless you’re really, genuinely discomforted by that.” you scrutinise him again as you glance over the space between you. “it’s new to me, at least. I know what this–” you gesture loosely between the both of you, “–was like before, and I know it’s different. however…” once more your hand matches its pair by coming up to rest on his face, though this time sliding further back to thread fingers into his hair. it’s nice, he thinks. “…i want to give it a try if you do.” he swallows the lump in his throat, or at least tries to. “say that again,” he demands, though it comes out weaker than he’d like. damn, his voice is still thick. you raise one brow. “this is new but I’ll give it a try?” “before that.” “I’ll stop if you’re uncomfortable?” “bit more.” “…ah,” you murmur simply. you let out a small chuckle then, before leaning in once more. your lips brush his ever so gently and he loves it. “I love you,” you whisper to him. like a secret meant only for him. he grips your hips tighter, pulls you closer to him, and he smiles back to you. “that’s the one,” he answers simply. he kisses you back yet again, and for some reason, it feels like a first, all over again.

SU Music Rankings

Bc I can and I wanna start some Disk Horse rip. These are all in order of preference, with explanations, etc. It’s a long bitch. That said, I’m not counting little short jingles or small joke songs like Little Butler. This is the meat and potatoes of SU music- just under 30 songs. I might do the rest if people like my takes lol.

I scored it mostly on three bases- how dear it was to my heart, how much/often I relisten to it, and also what it means to the plot. That said, little fun songs don’t automatically go farther down than big, plot-heavy songs either! It’s a strange little balance.

Special Note: I don’t dislike any of this music! I love SU and that includes its bumps and glitches. I just pick favorite children lol.

1.) Change

Was there ever a more Steven moment than when he wiped the blood off his face and kissed it into sparkles? I think not.

If “Be Wherever You Are” is an ode to young Steven, then this is teen Steven’s. Talking about change, and how much and how little it can do. How he holds his arms up for Spinel to hug him, so trusting. How he seems able to just. Break into soft tears at will, and not to be manipulative- it’s just his kind nature. The warmth in his voice. Fuck yesssss.

2.) Change Your Mind

This song is only fifty five seconds and it’s EVERYTHING to me. It really felt like someone was speaking the words I’d always held deep inside of me, unsure of how to say. It feels like a goodbye to someone who never really loved me.

As much as I enjoyed Future, if this was the finale of SU, I would’ve been perfectly okay with that.

3.) Drift Away

This song gave me legitimate shivers the first time I heard it, and it still haunts me to this day. Spinel stayed, and waited, and all she got was a transmission thousands of years later. Fuck.

4.) Here We Are In The Future

THE MOVIE IS SU AS ITS BEST AND I WON’T BE SWAYED ON IT. Steven being a teen who loves his weird family but is growing just a bit sarcastic to their drama. The adorable love he and Connie share. His slow realization that he will always be working, always have things to do, is both somber and real. The Crystal Gems won’t be safe with one epic battle. They’ll be safe with years of hard work and love. HIS LITTLE HANDSHAKE WITH AMETHYST.

This is a helluva bop and a great way to summarize the main character’s backstories.

5.) Let’s Only Think About Love

Did ya’ll know that Zach Callison killed his throat with that last note? He gave his all for this performance in a vocal range he no longer comfortably do and by god did it SHINE. The FLAIR. The FORESHADOWING. All of the Gems all being awkward about Rose and Steven trying to bring them to the present. Peridot having a mini-existential crisis in a cute yellow dress. I love Zach Callison’s normal singing voice but man is that a fucking bop. Nothing will ever beat it.

6.) Here Comes A Thought

This bad boy helped me out a LOT with some mental issues I was dealing with in high school. I was unmedicated, unsupervised, and full of anxiety. I’d have break downs when I tried to speak about certain things. I couldn’t function. This song inspired me. It helped me feel okay with my intrusive thoughts.

And the episode! -chef’s kiss-. Once again bringing up the morally gray area of training child soldiers. Connie expanding her social group. Steven’s trauma hauling ass in that second half. The ANIMATION. Stevonnie’s gorgeous singing voice. GOD yes.

7.) It’s Over Isn’t It?

Just barely squeaking above Stronger Than You, this ballad is everything gorgeous. The whole episode is. I think Mr. Greg stands in the top five of my episodes for the entire show. It even got nominated!

There’s just so much about this song that I love. The gentle melancholy of Pearl’s voice. How the crew had to redo the shots for this bit bc Deedee went so fucking hard. The hard cuts between Pearl, remembering the love of her life, and Steven, who has begun to feel like he took her away. I’d recommend this song to anyone, regardless of what they do or don’t know about SU, simply bc it tugs so many heartstrings of love, loss, and responsibility.

8.) Stronger Than You

Did you realize this episode aired SEVEN years ago? This bitch was what got me into SU! Hearing about Ruby and Sapphire made my little gay heart so happy inside, and then getting a whole song confirming that they were a couple, that their love powered the strongest Gem on the team? Aaaaaaaaa

To this DAY I get excited when I hear Estelle start singing. This song is timeless. This song will live in media history. God I fucking love this song.

9.) Other Friends

I’m not the biggest musical person, so I hadn’t heard of Sarah Stiles before her casting as Spinel, but JESUS CHRIST the lady went hard. She went SO fucking hard. Sarah Stiles started on 100 and somehow just kept CLIMBING. You can just hear the sheer manic energy building in her voice, the anger and resentment. 10/10 Sarah Stiles is a queen.

10.) Independent Together

This made the list entirely bc the crew was like “you’re gonna get a himbo ass Steven-Greg fusion singing with Opal while Garnet flies across the moon on Lion while floating” and I am forever thankful to them for it

11.) Who We Are

Bismuth deserved more songs. ‘Nuff said.

12.) Peace and Love (On the Planet Earth)

It Could’ve been Great is EASILY one of my favorite s2 episodes. I love the entire concept of this song. Of Steven making music to reflect how much Earth means to him and his family. Of him teaching Peridot some self-care. Also Peridot’s singing voice is really cute and squeaky.

I know it’s silly, but I would’ve really enjoyed a flip around of this in Future! Like Peridot reminding Steven how much he loves music, that he needs to take time to relax for himself, maybe with a new verse or just a remix of the original song!

13.) Something Entirely New

I watched this episode as it aired, and I legitimately almost cried. I love Charlyne Yi’s voice so much ya’ll- her raspy, not perfect singing voice against Sapphire’s deep soothing lull is great.

And to have Ruby and Sapphire’s meeting be the way it was- for Ruby to bemoan Sapphire losing Homeworld, to being stuck with a single Ruby, while Sapphire is a noble who has always been taught everyone in her “caste” is vitally important (and has, in her own mind, taken that to mean every Gem, as she should) and how they come together and make each other happy. Good shit good shit.

14.) I’m Just a Comet

The fact that Greg’s music career never really blasted off pisses me off to this day bc Tom Scharpling’s voice is fucking BUTTER. Also the song really feels like a jab at his parents now that we know the kind of dynamic he had growing up. “This life in the stars if all I’ve ever known” is definitely him wiping away their existence after reminding them (and himself) the things they used to say about him.

15.) Do It For Her

This episode. This fucking episode. This episode got me permanently hooked on SU. I’d just binged season 1 and was kinda meh about it overall after the bop of Stronger Than You. “Oh,” I thought to myself, foolishly, “I’ll probably just casually watch this from time to time.”

Like three days later Sworn to the Sword aired and that was it. I was hooked! Pearl’s gentle training song turning darker and darker, Connie’s accompaniment from nervous to determined to fully into such a toxic mindset. The fact that SU had the BALLS to discuss the repercussions of training child soldiers, now and later. This episode was everything to me, STILL is everything to me.

Six years and well over 100 fanfics written later, I think it’s safe to say this show swallowed me whole and never let go.

16.) System/Boot.pearl_final(3)

I debated putting this on the list because it’s not anything crazy important, just a way to show things are Wrong, but I had to do it entirely bc Pearl is so damn SALTY.

Like telling us about the Gems makes sense, she felt like she was given a duty, but she went so damn petty. WHY is that Ruby alone. Gross. This Amethyst is a trash dump. Wtf are you people.

17.) Full Disclosure

This episode really feels like a turning point for SU. Before, the show had its dark moments- but now we’re in the thick of it, and it’s not going away. Full Disclosure felt like an rebuff to the idea of returning to any normal we’d established in season 1. Gems are actually a giant species now. Gems tried to kill us now. There’s this Yellow Diamond bitch who got namedropped. Something about a Cluster.

The song itself is BALLER, with its ingenious use of Steven’s ringtone and photos as he tries to decide whether to clue in Connie on all this nonsense. Meanwhile we, the audience, already know damn well Connie about to yeet some common sense into him.

18.) What’s the Use of Feeling Blue?

I’mma admit it- I’m a Yellow Diamond stan. I’ve always loved her- her anger, her poise, her hardworking nature. I actively argued against the “Yellow Shattered Pink” theories back in the day. But, man, when this arc leaked? I got so overexcited I was too jittery to watch it for like two days. It’s easily my favorite arc of the series. The sheer alien nature of the zoo, the Famethyst, and absolutely Patti Lupone’s beautiful ballad. Goddamn. Yellow singing to Blue to try and help her regain her old status, the warble in her voice as she reminds Blue she misses Pink too, the movement of the bubbles as she talks about attack. It gives me shivers to this day. FUCK.

19.) Tower of Mistakes

This is, fun fact, that only SU song I have completely memorized. The story itself is kinda funny! See, we lost internet at my house for a solid 5 to 6 months when these episodes aired, so I only got a very brief window to view them all. But this was the first Amethyst song in a long while, and I didn’t want to forget it! So I keep replaying it in my head for ages. And that’s still definitely a thing.

Anyway will never not be sad that this entire song was about making it up to Garnet for Amethyst’s perceived slights with Sugilite (which was a two-way road), only for Garnet to pressure her into fusion later when pissed and never discuss it again bc Garnet probably never thought twice about it and Amethyst has the emotional openness of a clam that’s just been told its ugly. Helluva way to make someone feel like shit, G. Helluva way to bottle that shit, Ames.

20.) On the Run

I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times: Amethyst! Needed! More! Songs!

The dichotomy between Steven’s play and Amethyst’s honest desire to run away from home is so well-done, especially when you consider a lot of Steven and Amethyst’s actions are playing together. The song is also near and dear to me simply bc it’s my favorite Amethyst episode to exist (well, maybe second to What’s Your Problem, but not by much). Moments like these are all the proof I need that they were right to fuse first.

21.) Be Wherever You Are

This tune really just feels like an ode to who Steven was as a kid. Trapped on an island with no way home, and he’s just happy to be with his friends. The stars are beautiful and not oppressive. Also that one animatic with Lars and the Off Colors playing in the Homeworld Kindergarten to this music was iconic and made this song get stuck in my head for a solid month.

22.) Familiar

I ADORE how the crew use bright neon colors to show how alien Homeworld can be. And Steven recognizing that the Diamonds treat him how the CGs used to, and how prepared he is to “fix” a broken family. It’s a soft, gentle tune about melancholy. Also the Pebbles are beautiful.

23.) Let Me Drive My Van Into Your Heart

Such a cute little love ballad, but every time I listen to it now I just imagine the heart attack Rose must’ve had at the line “And if we look out of place/Well, baby, that's okay/I'll drive us into outer space.” like there’s a Vietnam war flashback if I ever heard one

24.) What Can I Do?

I’m kind of neutral on this one? Rose and Greg both have great voices, but the song itself lacks many lyrics. I think it was definitely a good way to show Rose’s flaws in thinking.

Also, I’m shocked they managed cram that much vaguely sexual innuendo into two minutes, followed by how Not Hetereo that dance between Rose and Pearl was, and not get their asses chewed by it. You go guys.

25.) Cookie Cat

I love a lot of the vibes this song has. The lyrics are so damn prophetic, but they also sound like the kind of weird 90s commercials I grew up on. It’s been like two decades since I saw the Shirley Temple commercial but I’ll be damned if I don’t remember “Animals crackers in my soup! Monkey and rabbits loop-de-loop.”

26.) Giant Woman

I am. NOT the biggest fan of Steven’s original singing voice. I feel bad saying that, since it was just Zach Callison as a kid, but he never jived well with me for some reason. So I wouldn’t listen to this on the fly.

The song itself is still really good though, with all sorts of fun animation of Amethyst and Pearl being bitchy to each other. It’s a bit sad in hindsight to see tiny Steven trying to get his moms to get along. Ahh, season 1.

27.) Strong in the Real Way

This song has SUCH a strong start. Pearl reflecting on Sugilite’s problems, but the show making sure to show us that Pearl’s lack of enthusiasm towards her also lends itself to jealousy as well as just general malaise. How much she cares about Steven, and wants him to grow up strong.

And then Steven just kinda. Ruins it? I appreciate his enthusiasm for tryna bulk up but to take what was starting as such a rich, personal song and broadcasting it to random strangers just makes me a bit sad. Almost a bit angry on her behalf?

28.) That Distant Shore

I KNOW this is gonna create some discourse, but I’m just not the biggest Lapis stan. I love her voice. I love the visuals of the song. And I get why she felt afraid and needed to flee.

But Lapis never got to take responsibility for her own actions. And, in the end, the song feels hollow to me- because we all know she’ll never talk to anyone about it, know she’ll burst back in and destroy the barn, and no one will ever question it. I like Lapis a lot, but I feel like her arc never was fully finished. She never got help. She never learned to feel safe.

29.) Dear Old Dad

I’ve yet to meet a single human being who likes this episode tbh. There’s some great discussion about what kind of parent Greg is from it, and what kind of dynamic he has with the Gems that he felt he had to fake an injury to hang out with his son. Honestly the first half was fine and dandy. It’s just that then they Greg just went out of his way to drag Steven away from missions and such. It never jived well with his character before or after.

Also, is it just me, or does Zach himself sound like he hates the song as he sings it? There’s no passion or heart in his voice. It sounds like they told him to read off cue cards and he did. Tom Scharpling’s best attempts didn’t save this one for being a skipper. But the episode, unfortunately, isn’t, so it gets a spot on here.

Stiles hasn’t seen Derek Hale this close up for over a decade. He looks almost exactly the same, except somehow he seems even bigger and broodier—criminally handsome, with soft-looking dark scruff, heavy brows, light hazel eyes. His gaze zeros in on Stiles almost immediately, and his scowl lightens minutely in what looks like surprise.

Stiles is acutely aware that he has melted butter and cinnamon all over his face, and tries to surreptitiously wipe it with the ends of his sweater-sleeve.

What do you think the relationship between Laito and Yui would of been like if they met while they were both children? I know that's not possible but perhaps in some alternate universe where they could?

Oh my god, that would be so freaking cute!

I think that Laito would have been more open minded as a kid, along with his dismissive and aloof nature that we see when he's a child. But he definitely is more soft and cheery as a child––I guess the same kind of "fake" cheeriness or putting a smile on his face to cheer up his brothers, but he still has a lot of issues. I've written about how he was possibly groomed by Cordelia as a kid, but regardless he grew up in a household where he saw and most likely experienced abuse (definitely a most likely to almost certain cuz Cordelia was neglectful on top of abusive).

With Yui, she's a beam of sunshine. I imagine she'd be a bit more shy but with her open mindedness and curiosity or at least ability to want to get to know people, she'd probably be a good listener. I think both would have been the listening type, but I'd think Yui is more adaptable––she'd talk if she needed to. I feel like that Laito would feel cared for and or loved if he met Yui as a child, or at least feels like he has someone to go to. Sure he was closer with Ayato as a child, but even so he didn't go to Ayato with his problems. So I feel like it would be possibly easier for him to feed information vaguely to someone else, and baby Yui would be like that for him.

Mmmmmkay I have to rant about Nier: Automata for a bit; I accidentally triggered the end of the game (playthrough 2, ending B) last night and stayed up till 2:00 trying to finish the stupid “not allowed to save” phase. But y’aLL IT’S SO GOOD??????? AND 3RD PLAYTHROUGH ISN’T ANOTHER RE-RUN OF THE SAME STORY WE GET MORE STORY AAAAAAAAA

(more under the cut because there is ALOT for those who care;;;;;)

- OK SO THE MUSIC IS AMAZING??? I love LOVE that the music dynamics build in instruments and intensity as you progress towards danger/plot, but also softens again for quieter moments and just...musical storytelling is so sooooo my jam I love it. Also that the music goes 8 bit when 9S hacks stuff, it’s actually kinda cute X’D

- ON THE SUBJECT of 9S being able to hack into enemies and you getting to play that as a little teeny ship shooting down viruses and barriers and whatnot. Genius???? That added SO MUCG to the story on the second playthrough as 9S. Particularly discovering the fact that all of humanity?? Is actually extinct?? ...even BEFORE the aliens/machines attacked earth?? WH A T?????? WHAT THE HECK ARE ANDROIDS FIGHTING FOR THEN????? *every time an android salutes and says “glory to mankind” now* GLORY MY FOOT THEY ALL DEAD MOVE ON--

- I realize it probably has alot to do with the lore of previous nier games and I’ll probably have to trawl through Wiki pages soon here. Emil himself really broke my heart aaaaaah baby...his side quest is so sad. I also looked at arts and he was a really cute kid?? Before he was turned int the freaky moon skeleton thing...?? Oh my goodness......

- The secret lunar tear flower room is gorgeous. I just sat there for awhile to soak it all in...the music is so nostalgic and I’ve never heard that song bfore how do y’all DO THAT--

- Emil’s shop is pretty cute. He just drives around the ruins and sells stuff if you shoot him and he’ll stop X’’’D It did ruin alot of serious moments tho. *Engels, talking about how he’d sinned for killing so many androids and choosing death--* “S-A-L-E SAAAALLLEEE~~!! EVERY SALE’S A WIIIINNNNNN~~~~!!!! LALALaaaaaa~~~...” Me: *facepalm*

- ...I just realized the little tune he sings is a cheerful rendition of the music in the flower room. H E C K

- ANYWAY. Onto the actual game. I really really enjoyed playing as 9S for obvious reasons (bABY) but it really did add so soooo much to the pretty much surface level story when you first play as 2B. Which sums them up pretty well...2B, Battle unit 2, pushes on relentlessly, avoids thinking too hard about things and what she’s doing because oh dear, EMOTION might get in the way...9S, Scanner unit 9, on the other hand, cannot stop his curiosity. He asks questions, he sticks his nose in way further than he should to some dangerous stuff. I think he realized Machines were sentient and had feelings long before 2B, but was in denial for a good while. You learn so much more about what you’re fighting as 9S, because he scans. He observes, searches, discovers. Heck, some hacking caused him to experience empathy for the poor things, to his horror...

- Actually, there are alot of scenes where either 2B or 9S questions why a machine they’re killing is screaming for help, of crying for lost family, or loudly proclaiming loyalty to a king they’ll give their lives for...they stop for a moment, but the other quickly jumps in and reminds them that it’s just imitation. It’s not real, it’s fake, machines can’t feel, yadda yadda...it was odd to me they kept switching off on reminding, but...I think they both know, deep down, what they’re doing. But denial. Because if machines DO have feelings, if they are sentient...what does that mean for all they’ve killed...? Just...hoo BOY the moral dellimas in this game?? Scary good. The quests get that across alot.

- I don’t like the theme of hopelessness in most of the side quests?? I do see many of them as cautionary tales though. We watch many characters lose hope and the will to live after their thing/person they’re living FOR is gone. It makes me worry alot about 2B, who is a soldier through and through. 9S actually does have hopes and dreams for things outside of the war, which I love ;7; they definitely lean on each other alot emotionally on this respect though...I don’t know quite what to make of the themes of the game this far in yet;;;;

- The love between 9S and 2B is of course my favorite thing. Familial, romantic, idk. I, being me, see it as more platonic, “You’re my rock in this storm” only friend/sister/brother vibe, but as more of a fan of platonic relationships, that is what I tend to do. But 9s following 2B around like a lost puppy and trying to do all he can to help and do his job but also getting bored with said job and trying to make the most of things, asking all the “why” questions, 2B acting irritated but also always keeps him close and makes sure he’s safe....going ballistic when someone hurts her boy ;;v;; I love...2 kids. Their operators and pods are such fun dynamics too~~

- As far as endings A and B...DANG. It hit worse because you get backstory on the giant ocean machine (that 9S just hit with a giant missle, which he also had to ride to keep it on the right path...DX NO SELF PRESERVATION) he just...wanted his mama......;;A;;

- Also it’s not fair. 9S is so injured by that missle attack, then I guess Adam finds him and is like “HM. *sticks the lil boy impaled on a wall* Perfect. *proceeds to emotionally and mentally torture said child*“ like YO ADAM THAT’S NOT HOW YOU DO THINGS. Then 2B proceeds to kick down walls for her boy and kills Adam and walks off carrying 9S bridal style into the sunset. Lovely. I have a comic idea for this part, lol.

- Oh I don’t like Adan very much, he is pretty tho?? There was alot of blood though...how do machines bleed?? How do the androids bleed?? What??? I question this alot.

- HHHHHHH THE BECOME AS GODS CHAPTER SCARED ME I DON’T EVER WANNA DO THAT AGAIN DANG SUICIDAL ROBOTS SCARED ME SO BAD

- Fighting Eve was...annoying but still heartbreaking. He misses his brother so much....even though Adam is a butthead and couldn’t care less he left his little brother behind DX just everything about that fight was Tragic. Also Eve developing more self awareness and realizing “Eve” is a girl’s name and being a bit miffed LOL that’s what y’all get when your first book is the bible kiddos...I realize they’re technically like what? 2 weeks old still???

- The ENDING. From 9S’s perspective is especially scary....the corruption transforming him, 2B coming in to kill him to stop the pain, he BEGGED her to, just....hhhhhhh babies ;;A;; 2B’s soft broken crying over him as she’s forced to strangle her only friend to death just aaaaaAAAAAAAA I DIE ;;;;;;;;~;;;;;;;;;

- I was actually able to cry over it this time coz. It was 2 am. No parent awkwardly watching over my shoulder. Because the pose for this scene is...........super awkward..........like......really........their clothes are super torn up and uh. The first time I was just hoping my parents wouldn’t mistake it for a sex scene or something hhhhhghhhhh;;;;;; I really really REALLY wish the pose was different, the game does need to give the fanservice a rest, at LEAST for a scene this serious DX I’m able to ignore it but when someone else is watching I don’t wanna have to explain;;;;

- That IS a big gripe I have with the game. The fanservice. Just. Why. How is 2B’s outfit practical?? Self destruct mode???? REALLY???? Get this girl battle shorts or something please.....I guess if I looked at it more as a ballet outfit?? I might make some edits when I draw her because GEEZ.

- 9S gets some of this too. Self destruct mode, his shorts are blown off???? WHAT THE HECK???? Welp, never using that again. also why is he the only yorha boy android??????????? X’’’’D They never explain that!!

- BACK TO ENDING STUFF why were there random data hologram girls standing there, watching 2B strangle 9S?? Just...silently there...they weren’t there in the first playthrough?? I’ve seen them a couple times but they’re NEVER mentioned?? WHAT ARE THEY-- is it a glitch?? Wha--

- Teeny 9S being able to dump his consciousness into a giant machine robot guy and cradling 2B in his hand ;;~;; he’s fine y’all I’m so GLAD (I wanna draw something for this scene.... I wanna draw alot of things)

- I love Pascal. He should adopt all the sad people to his happy peace village. He already started that...what a good egg.

- The accessories option is lovely. I’ve been running around with 9S with a blue bow in his hair forever now ;7; replaced with the flower in his hair because BOYS AND FLOWERS I LOVE but I think I might give the flower to 2B because she’d look lovely with it and....I miss the blue bow X’D

- Also the AMOUNT of things this could line up with a KH universe....as far as how androids work, hearts (black boxes), memories making you...you, being able to transfer “hearts” to new bodies when the old is destroyed, POWER OF LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP...there’s alot. I dunno what to do with this info...

Anyway, I have alOT of thoughts and feelings on this game, it’s like...a very cool book. I’ve had trouble putting down. These aren’t even all of them but idk who I can actually rant to so here it is for the Void

TodoIida is hilarious and wonderful -- their personalities are so funny, with Iida being SO EXTRA and Todoroki being singularly unflappable but also secretly Soft. But I also like Iida + Uraraka in context of tododeku?? Like ... they would be so cute ...

I love KiriBaku / Bakushima because it’s just s-s-s-so pure. Like, Kirishima is such a Good Boy that he melts Bakugou with the brightness of his smile and that’s a canonical miracle. The way the shippers portray it is just so emotional and the only way I can lock into ships with Bakugou is explosionboy finally chipping a little off of the ice block around his heart and realizing he can Emote Softly. Hopefully after Breaking Down in the Fucking Loudest Way because … necessary. (in the same vein occasionally I’ll reblog a BakuDeku something or other, but I only jive with that when they’re way way older and have obviously done the DIFFICULT work to come to terms with their past and all the abuse Midoriya has suffered. Just to head off the purity police, obviously not fetishizing or expecting romantic relationships to solve, or emerge from, bullying =__= Bakugou is a little shit and has done a lot of harm, and could have done even more, but he’s learning and that’s better than the alternative.)

So I said I would do a request for my friend @littlepuku… she gave me a prompt list, and I picked one for Aspen and Nodin. But uh… I got a little carried away with the idea, so I included two followup sketches with Viola and Bassoon as well XD I hope that’s okay lol. Enjoy! Giggle. Squeal! “Ssh! You’ll wake the kids…” “Sorry…” Nodin but her lip, trying to contain her excitement as she followed her husband into the water. They were on a family camping trip. Everybody had gone to bed, Aspen and Nodin included. But Nodin couldn’t sleep, so she’d gone outside to look at the stars… and she must have woken Aspen, because not long after he joined her. Then Nodin had noticed how pretty the lake looked under the moonlight… and Aspen had suggested they go for a swim. So now, with a burning blush upon her cheeks, Nodin watched Aspen step into the water, using his tail as a guide. “Oh! It’s cold.” Aspen commented. He didn’t mind much, though. He liked this idea. He submerged himself in the water, and spiralled away from land, towards the centre of the moonlit lake. “Hey!” Nodin whispered harshly from the lakeside; he could just about hear her. “Wait for me!”

She didn’t want to yell too loud, in case she woke their children. But he was so far away! Couldn’t he sense it? It seemed like he didn’t care. Nodin dipped the tip of her tail into the water, and flinched at its coldness. It was a warm summer’s evening, but still the water wasn’t so warm… Nodin didn’t really like cold water. But… Aspen was waiting for her. That was more important! She bit her lip in excitement, and let out another small giggle. “I’m coming…” She squealed, and carefully lowered herself into the lake.

Aaaa… “Aspen…!” Nodin whispered, as loudly and as discreetly as she could. “It’s cold…” She made her way over to him; she could just about see his outline in the distance. He was floating on the water; he seemed so relaxed… it was nice. A small smile formed on Nodin’s face, and she felt a warmth in her heart. He seemed very peaceful…

She got closer to him; close enough to see his face. “Aspen…” Nodin’s smile brightened when he turned towards the sound of her voice, and offered a friendly grin. “It’s not too cold?” He questioned, moving into an upright position. “It’s okay…” Nodin swam closer to him, and caught his tail with her foot. She giggled as he wrapped his tail around her, and pulled her against him. “I can warm you up.” Aspen purred. “Giggle. Okay then!” Nodin felt her cheeks burning as he placed his arms around her, entangling his tail in hers. He planted a kiss on her cheek; he could feel her smile. Nodin looked at him, and couldn’t help but giggle. The expression on his face… it was so bright and child-like; he looked so excited! It was cute. “Okay.” Nodin bit her lip, and nodded. “But… we have to be quiet.” “Mm.” Aspen moved his hand across his lips to zip them shut, causing Nodin to laugh.

“Viola…?” Bassoon whispered as loudly as he could, whilst trying to stay quiet. “Come on… stop messing around!” He looked around the lake. He was nervous, and terrified of getting caught. He and Viola had snuck out after everyone had gone to bed… Viola thought it would be fun to go for a swim. It had kind of seemed like a fun idea to Bassoon as well, so he’d agreed to go… but Viola always had to take things too far, and she’s gone underwater and gone off swimming on her own. Bassoon didn’t see where she went, and now he was stuck out on the lake. He didn’t want to go back to the tent, because he didn’t want to leave her on her own out here… but he couldn’t call out for her either, in case he woke his parents and siblings. This was so annoying! “Viola…!” Bassoon whispered harshly, becoming more frustrated by the second. This wasn’t funny! “Come on, stop – aaa!” He clasped his hands over his mouth, to silence his own scream before he could wake anyone. He felt something… he really hoped it was her. There was something… touching his privates. His exposed privates… he knew he should have worn his swim shorts! Viola had said it would be fun to go naked, but this wasn’t fun for him! This was creepy! Was it a fish…? Ewwwww, if it was a fish he would cry! “V…” Bassoon spoke through his hands, his body trembling. Splash! Just as he’d feared, Viola’s head popped out from under the water, and she set her eyes upon him. She looked annoyed… Aww… he felt bad now… “Bassoon, what the hell!” She barked. “Sorry!” Bassoon whimpered. “I thought you were a crocodile!” “What kind of crocodile gives a blowjob?” Viola argued. “If I was a crocodile I would have just bitten it off!” “I thought maybe it was tasting it first…” Bassoon felt his cheeks burning, as an overwhelming sense of embarrassment and guilt overcame him. She smirked slightly. “I was just trying to have fun.” She grinned. “Don’t be so uptight. And don’t freak out. If you’re in the lake with your girlfriend and you feel something sucking your dick, it’s probably your girlfriend.” “Uh… okay…” Bassoon mumbled sheepishly. Well yeah… that made more sense… When he thought about it… What else would do that…? “Unless it’s a leach fish.” “A – a what?” Bassoon yelped, his eyes widening. What the heck was that? “Yeah. They crawl up inside your dick to suck the blood.” Viola said. “And they dig their teeth right in. It’s impossible to remove them without just cutting the dick off.” “What!” Bassoon shrieked, and immediately clasped his hand over his mouth when he realised how loud he was. Crap! She smirked again, and giggled. “But it doesn’t matter, does it? If we have to cut it off, you can regenerate.” “I still don’t want to go through it!” Bassoon cried, from behind his hands. “I’m getting out!”

He turned to swim back to the tent, when he heard Viola giggling, and felt something soft against his back. It was probably her boobs… Bassoon would blush, if he wasn’t so terrified. He just wanted to get out of here! This lake was dangerous! “Settle down…” Viola whispered, her breath tickling his ear as she spoke. Bassoon’s cheeks darkened slightly… it felt nice. She knew his ears were his weak spot…

He felt her arms wrap around him, and her hands slide down his chest, over his belly, towards his lower region. “They can’t get you if I’m in the way, right…?” “Uh…” Bassoon’s blush deepened, as he became increasingly aware of her hands on him. She’d thought nothing of answering honestly, until she felt his entire body tense. “Vi…” Bassoon sobbed. “Really…?” “Don’t worry.” Viola giggled. “I’m sure there aren’t.” she planted a kiss behind his ear, and smirked when he shivered in response. He was a little excited; she could feel it in her hand. “But… just to be sure, how about I hide it…?” “Uh…” Bassoon swallowed, his antennae twitching. He didn’t know how to answer, because he honestly felt so conflicted. There were pros, and cons… but she took his silence as a yes, and Bassoon felt the soft squishiness of her boobs leave his back, and he heard the sound of her lowering herself underwater… then he felt a tight, wet warmth around him, and he bit his lip. Well… so long as she made a good seal… maybe for a little while… “Ah…” He closed his eyes, and soon forgot about the scary fish.

Suddenly, Nodin stopped dead in her tracks. They… weren’t alone. There were… witnesses. In the water, by the shore, naked from the waist up at least… there were Viola and Bassoon. Bassoon looked… mortified. “U-Uh…” he choked, his cheeks darkening and his body shaking. Oh, no! They’d been caught! “H-Hi…” Quick! He had to think of an excuse! His mind was racing. Had Nodin seen Viola’s boobs yet? Had Viola put them away? Oh, he hoped Viola had put them away… please don’t let her be naked… Bassoon glanced at Viola, and noticed that she was still unclothed, and making no attempt to cover herself. Dammit! Why? What was wrong with her? He looked back at his mother, and desperately threw out the first thing he could think of. “I… I was too warm – we – we were too warm in the tent.” Bassoon stammered. “S-So we… we just decided to swim naked. To… to cool off.” “Mm?” Aspen hummed, turning his head towards the sound of Bassoon’s voice. “Is that Bassoon?” “Y-Yeah…” Nodin nodded, a deep blush forming on her face. “And Viola… um…” She let go of Aspen’s hand and looked at Bassoon sheepishly, not seeming to realise what they’d been up to. She was too concerned with hiding her own activities… “We – we wanted to cool off as well.” Nodin said. “And… I wanted to see if there were water lilies, and I wanted to view the forest from the lake…” She hurriedly thought up a couple of excuses, hoping at least one of them sounded plausible. This was so embarrassing… “Oh…” Bassoon nodded. “Y-Yeah. Us too. We – we didn’t find any lilies though…” “No, us neither.” Nodin replied. “It was disappointing.” Bassoon said. “Yes.” Nodin nodded in agreement. “It was the main reason we came out here.” “Yeah…”

The four of them remained silent for a moment, with Nodin and Bassoon struggling to make eye contact, each of them wondering if the other believed them… until Viola finally spoke up. “Were you two doing it?” She asked bluntly. “Because… we were. That was pretty much the only thing we came out to do. I wasn’t looking for water lilies.” “Wha!” Bassoon started to cry out, before his breath was stifled by his own shock. How… how could she say that? “Oh! Ho ho.” Aspen started chuckling, a wide grin forming on his face. “Yes! Actually, us too!” He put his arm around Nodin, and blushed slightly. “Well… when you become parents, you don’t often get the chance. You two don’t know how lucky you are.” “I think my parents have the same problem.” Viola grinned, and laughed along with Aspen, while Nodin and Bassoon looked absolutely mortified.
